SUMMARY:Santa Rosa Trail Loop through Box Canyon - Gentler Intermediate
DESCRIPTION:Wildwood Park is one of the most versatile local parks there is\, with 27 miles of trails skittering through rocky cliffs\, cacti-filled desert environs\, volcanic rock\, riparian forest\, and a cool\, watery canyon. You’ll be rewarded with beautiful vistas of the Conejo Valley\, Santa Rosa Valley and some interesting properties including the train-collector yard. \nWe’ll start on the Mesa trail and proceed to the Box Canyon. Then\, descend down through Box Canyon onto the paved Rocky High Road\, the train yard and up the Shooting Star trail to the Santa Rosa trail. We will enjoy the views of Mount Clef Ridge on both sides and head back to our cars. \nIt is about 6 1/2 miles and approximately 1000+’ of elevation gain. \nDirections: \nFrom the 101 in Thousand Oaks\, turn north on Lynn Road and continue 2.6 miles to Avenida De Los Arboles\, then turn left. SUMMARY:Los Robles Trail with option to Angel Vista ~ Intermediate Hike
DESCRIPTION:Space Mountain is the name for Los Robles Trail West\, starting at Moorpark Road in Thousand Oaks and switchbacking up the hill to the west. No one seems to know why it’s called Space Mountain\, though maybe the Disney ride inspired it. Maybe former major league pitcher Bill “Spaceman” Lee had something to do with it. Maybe it’s the final frontier. Come out and throw your equally ludicrous guess into the ring. \nWe will hike to the fireroad just after the new section…and you can opt to go up to Angel Vista for the views. If you go all the way\, you will hike just under or over 8 miles total with about 1350’ of gain. I may not make it all the way…I’m nursing a post-operative hand. If you turn around at the fireroad\, it will be shorter and less gain. Duh. If you don’t know the way\, stay with me. \nDirections: From the 101 in Thousand Oaks\, turn south on Moorpark Road. We will meet in the parking lot at the corner of Moorpark and Greenmeadow. \nPlease review our guidelines to participate in our hikes. Restrictions apply for your safety and ours: \n\nPlease don’t show up unless you’re on the “Attending” list\nUnregistered or waitlisted will be turned away\nSorry\, no “Plus Ones” on this hike\nNo dogs\n\nDISCLAIMER / RELEASE OF LIABILITY \nIMPORTANT\, PLEASE READ BELOW IN ITS ENTIRETY: \nThe hike host is a volunteer and not responsible for the group. SUMMARY:Oakbrook Vista - Easy Intermediate
DESCRIPTION:3.2 miles\, 900′ gain\, easy intermediate. \nThe first part is a steady incline\, followed by a rolling trail to our destination. Fit beginners can complete this hike\, but it will certainly get their blood pumping. There are no super steep sections. \nThis hike takes us to a secret spot below a large rock formation. Naturally into the side of the rock is a half-globe carved out of it\, giving us a quasi-cave area to sit and have our social event. \nThis is not a conditioning hike\, it’s a social hike. We’ll be stopping at various points to let people catch up and to make sure they make any turns. We’ll stop at the turn around point for a social event lasting 30 – 60 minutes\, where we will share snacks and beverages. \nThe Route \nHike\nDistance: 3.2 miles\nGain: 900′\nDistribution: Most of the incline is in the first half.\nDifficulty\nShape: Out and Back.\nPace: approx. 2.0 mph.\nTrail Type: Double track\, single track.\nTrail Variations:\nDuration: 3.5 hours\nDogs: Yes.\nRestrooms: Yes\, about a block from the start.\nDrinking Fountains: Maybe by the restrooms.\nParking: Park in the street. \nWhat to bring\n1 liter of water for every 3 miles.\nHiking shoes/boots. Not required\, but recommended.\nFlashlight or headlamp.\nSunscreen and/or hat as needed.\nSnacks and/or beverages to share \nHosting\nRoute: The host knows the route. A pic of the route has been posted. \nNavigation: Host memory\, enhanced by GPS navigation as needed. \nHike type: Social.\nWe won’t be hiking at a fast pace because this is a social hike\, not a conditioning hike. There is nothing wrong with stopping\, even if it means every 50 steps. \nStops: The host may designate stopping points to let others catch up. This hike will include an extended stop for a Snack and Beverage Share at the half way point. We will stop at junctions to make sure everybody makes any turns or chooses the correct direction at splits\, else something will be used to mark the direction\, usually a large arrow made of baking soda or some sticks in the shape of an arrow. There may not always be a sweeper designated to be the last hiker. \nEach hiker is responsible for knowing their capability\, only attending events where they are able to sustain the described pace\, for keeping up with the group sufficiently enough to make the turns and not get left behind\, and for making sure the host is notified if they are going to split from the group. \nGroup separation: Sometimes hikers wish to move significantly ahead and not wait at designated stopping points. Please let the host know. They are on their own regarding route and navigation. \nInteresting Notes\nHere are a couple plants you are sure to see on this hike: \nManzanita\nRounded leaves. Redish trunk and stems. Hard wood. Lots of curves. People used to spray this tree with lacquer and mount on their walls like a “tree of life” for decoration. \nSticky Monkeyflower\nOf the Snapdragon family. The flowers are supposed to resemble a laughing monkey’s face. Leaves are very sticky on the underside. \nDirections\nOakbrook Vista Trailhead\n3222 Lang Ranch Pkwy.\nThousand Oaks\, CA 91362\nCoordinates of trailhead: 34.212466\, -118.820325 \nFrom CA-23\nExit 15 Avenida de Los Arboles.\nEast on Avenida de Los Arboles until it ends\, 1.6 miles.\nRight (south) on N. Westlake Blvd 0.2 miles.\nLeft (east) on Lang Ranch Pkwy. 0.2 miles.\nPark on street\, trailhead on the right (south) side. \nFAQ\nHiking Plus Page Links\nDisclaimer / Release of Liability

SUMMARY:COSF: Water: Where it comes from\, how we use it\, where it goes—& why it matters
DESCRIPTION:Please join Conejo Open Space Foundation for a live online presentation by local expert Jennifer Lancaster who will discuss the origins of our water\, how it’s used\, where it winds up\, and whether those practices are sustainable at their current levels. After the presentations\, there will be a Q & A session for attendees to ask about issues of prime interest to them. \nAlthough the Conejo Valley received unusually abundant rain this year\, water will continue to be of critical concern for Ventura County residents and our county’s primary industry\, agriculture. Jennifer will also go over new challenges that water managers face from the state’s changing hydrology\, and how we can better use the water we get through conservation and planning. \nMs. Lancaster is Principal Resource Specialist at Calleguas Municipal Water District. She received her Bachelor of Science degree in biology from the University of California\, Riverside and her Master of Science in biology from California State University\, Northridge. She began her career as a biological science technician for the National Park Service and has also taught at Moorpark and Pierce Colleges. \nHeld quarterly since 2019\, the COSF Speaker Series has included climate authority Dr. Sean Anderson as well as wildlife experts Dr. Dan Cooper\, Dr. Seth Riley\, Dr. Jessica Sanchez\, and the National Wildlife Federation’s regional executive director Beth Pratt. \nTo sign up for this event\, go to the registration page on the COSF website and fill in the form. While this is a free event\, we encourage a donation of $10 to support future Speaker Series presentations. \nThis talk is sponsored in part by Calleguas Municipal Water District and the City of Thousand Oaks.

SUMMARY:Hill & Hawk Canyons to trails with wildflower blooms - Gentler Intermediate
DESCRIPTION:This is a second hike for Thursday at Hill Canyon in Camarillo. It is a gentler hike. We will start at the parking area in Hill Canyon\, cross the bridge over the runoff creek\, and stroll a mile before turning onto the Hawk Canyon Trail. The Hawk Canyon Trail connects to Western Plateau Trail and Peninsula Trail which runs back down rejoining the Western Plateau Trail to The Hawk Canyon Trail. Then\, we will hike up the hidden trail and descend back into Hill Canyon and follow it all the way back to the parking lot. We will take a few breaks along the way to wait for everyone to catch up. Hopefully there will still be some flowers\, but it is drying up a bit. This is approximately 6 miles with an elevation gain of approximately 1000 feet. The trail is a bit overgrown so wear long pants and check for ticks after the hike. \nDirections: \nFrom Moorpark Road in the Santa Rosa Valley\, drive west on Santa Rosa Road for 3.7 miles\, turn left (south) on Hill Canyon Road for about 0.6 miles to the parking lot. \nFrom the 101 Freeway in Camarillo\, take exit 52 onto Santa Rosa Road and drive northeast. After 5 miles\, turn right onto Hill Canyon Road for about 0.6 miles to the parking lot. \nPlease review the guidelines (link to the guidelines) to join our hikes.\nRestrictions apply for your safety and ours: \n\nPlease do not show up unless you’re shown on the “Attending” list.\nNo dogs.\nNo “Plus Ones” Weekday Trailblazer hikes.\n\nDISCLAIMER/RELEASE OF LIABILITY – PLEASE READ IN ITS ENTIRETY\nThe hike host is a volunteer and not responsible for the group. If you become fatigued and unable to continue the hike\, it is expected you will advise the hike host of this and return to our starting point on your own. If you are able to proceed\, it is expected that you will maintain line of sight with other members of the group at all times and help to promote the group’s safety and fitness goals.\nOutdoor sports and other events we plan can be inherently dangerous and accidents may happen. SUMMARY:Dos Vientos Loop from Mountain Creek Dr – Gentler Friendly
DESCRIPTION:UPDATE: Please review our guidelines to participate in our hikes. Here are some highlights and a link to the guidelines: \nhttps://www.meetup.com/The-Weekday-Trailblazers/about/ \nRestrictions apply for your safety and ours: \n\nDon’t show up unless you’re on the “Attending” list\nNo “Plus Ones” on this hike\nPlan on completing the entire hike at a reasonable pace or please find an alternative hike that better suits your hiking level.\n\nFor this circle tour of Dos Vientos we will start at the Potrero Ridge trailhead off Mountain Creek Drive in Newbury Park\, climb to the top of the ridge and follow it west to the heart of the Dos Vientos trail system. From there we’ll make a clockwise loop along several trails\, starting with Sierra Vista\, followed by Las Brisas and El Cerro. El Cerro will drop us off at Via Las Brisas where we will have a 1/2 mile or so sidewalk stroll to the Potrero Ridge trail which takes us back to our cars. I previewed this trail on Saturday and it was spectacular. The monkey flowers have gone bananas (sorry) along with masses of purple sage and cliff aster. There are also great views of the Channel Islands to the west. \nMy Gaia clocked this hike at just over 6 miles with 800 feet elevation gain. Total time at a leisurely pace was 2 1/2 hours. \nThere is no cover on this hike as it climbs up and down the ridges of Dos Vientos\, so be sure to bring plenty of water and protection from the sun. \nDriving Directions: \nDriving Directions: From the 101 freeway\, turn south onto Wendy Drive\, towards the ocean. Continue for about 0.7 miles and turn right at Borchard Rd and head west 0.5 miles. Turn left on S. Reino Rd taking this south for about a mile. You will pass an Albertson’s supermarket\, then turn right onto Maurice Drive and right on Mountain Creek Drive. There is plenty of street parking in this residential neighborhood near the trailhead. \nDISCLAIMER / RELEASE OF LIABILITY\nIMPORTANT\, PLEASE READ BELOW IN ITS ENTIRETY: \nThe hike host is a volunteer and not responsible for the group. SUMMARY:Wildlife Tunnel Loop - Intermediate. Easier Option: Fit Beginner
DESCRIPTION:Intermediate – 3 miles\, 1000′ gain\nEasier Option – Fit Beginner\, 1.4 miles\, 525′ gain. \nThis hike is relatively short\, but the middle portion is a rugged and continuous incline for 1 mile with about 700′ of gain. Even though we’ll be taking this trail at the pace of a social hike\, beginners may find the intermediate option to be too hard. \nWe’ll start this hike by parking on the south side of the CA-118 at the Rocky Peak exit. We’ll walk west along the Santa Susana Pass Rd. for about 500 feet\, and directly across from Lilac Ln\, we’ll enter a trail. We’ll move along a relatively flat section from 1/2 mile\, then turn right and make a gradual climb until we reach the wildlife tunnel. \nThis is a tunnel underneath the CA-118 freeway\, built so that animals can cross. We’ll regroup here\, then continue up a strenuous and rugged climb for 1 mile until we reach the Rocky Peak Fire Rd. We’ll regroup again\, then turn left for 500′ until we reach the Hummingbird Trail. \nWe’ll find a couple large rocks and a bench there. We’ll have a social event lasting 30 – 60 minutes\, then head down the Rocky Peak Fire Road until it ends at the CA-118 freeway. We’ll then cross the freeway back to our cars. \nEasier Option: Hike up Rocky Peak 0.7 miles to the Hummingbird bench. This is about 1/3 up Rocky Peak. \nInteresting Notes:\nHere are a couple plants you are sure to see on this hike: \nCalifornia Sagebrush\nAromatic when crushed. AKA\, common sage\, coastal sage. Sunflower family. Cowboys used to ride through it and brush up against the pine-shaped leaves\, coming home with the smell on their clothes and giving rise to the nickname “Cowboy Cologne.” Not a true sage. Can be used as a cooking spice and can be made into a tea. Tear off some needles by running your hand up the stalk and smell the aroma. \nPurple Sage\nGrey-green leaves. Aromatic when crushed. Purple flowers. Aka\, Tobacco Sage\, with mild hallucinogenic properties when smoked. Can be used as a spice or made into a tea. Tea has medicinal affects: Antiviral\, gargle for sore throats\, reduce hay fever symptoms and other drying actions. In the last summer\, fall\, and winter months\, the flowers will have turned brown and the leaves take on a greyer color. \nDirections\nRocky Peak Exit\, South Side of CA-118\nSimi Valley\, CA 93065\n34.268396\, -118.636139 \nFrom the 118\nExit 32 Rocky Peak Rd.\nPark on south of the freeway along Santa Susanna Pass Rd. \nFrom the 101 @ CA-23\nNorth CA-23 for 8.4 miles.\nEast I-118 for 14 miles.\nExit 32 Rocky Peak Rd.\nPark on south of the freeway along Santa Susanna Pass Rd. \nThe Hike\nDistance: 3 miles\, 3.5 hours\nElevation Gain: 1000′\nDifficulty: Intermediate.\nPace: 2.0 mph\nDogs: Yes\nRestrooms: No\nDrinking Fountains: No\nParking: Free\, south side of CA-118\nTrail: Single Track\, Double Track\, and rugged water path.\nPurpose: Social \nWhat to Bring:\n1-2 liters of water.\nSnacks and/or beverages to share\nHiking shoes preferred\, but athletic shoes will be OK.\nFlashlight or headlamp. \nFAQ\nHiking Plus Page Links\nDisclaimer / Release of Liability

SUMMARY:Short/ Long Local Conditioning Hike: East Cyn or go on to Mission Peak O/B
DESCRIPTION:July 1\, 2023 – Shorter or Longer Local Conditioning Hike: East Canyon to its end or go on a bit longer to Mission Peak (both are Out and Back) \nDISTANCE/ GAIN:\nBoth hikes are Out and Back (O/B) style; length depends on whether you do the second part (an extra ~3 miles round trip). \nNOTE: If you just want to do the “Shorter” hike\, you will go to the end of East Canyon and check out with the leader and then head back the same way you arrived\, back down East Canyon to the parking lot. It is straightforward but you will also be able to follow the arrows (we will have left) at any turns as you go back to the trail head. \n\n“Shorter”: East Canyon to the top ~ 6 mile Round trip total with 1320′ gain. Views of SFV\, SCV and Oat Mountain\, returning to East canyon trail head. Fair warning – this hike starts steeply but does get much easier later. This hike should finish by ~10.30 AM\n“Longer”: Same as above but with an add-on. ~ 9 miles Round Trip hike with 1635′ gain. At the top of East Canyon we turn South on the Sunshine Canyon Motorway for an out and back to Mission Peak (~3 extra miles total). Views of SFV\, the Van Norman Reservoir\, Balboa Blvd\, the West side of San Gabriels and East side of the Santa Susana Mountains off to the West.\n\nRATING:\nHike #1 – Moderate –\nHike #2 – Moderate + (mainly for distance).\nBoth hikes are not for beginners – you need to be in good physical condition to complete them (due to some decent gain near the start\, over a short distance). \nDESCRIPTION:\nLooks like it may be cooler than earlier in the week (check forecast)\, so it is a good time to visit the rolling hills\, views and quiet oak woodlands of the 480-acre Michael D. Antonovich Open Space.\nThis area straddles the ridgeline of the Santa Susana Mountains and there may be some mist at start. It features mixed woodlands of big cone Douglas-fir\, big leaf maple\, coast live oak\, California black walnut\, native ash\, and valley oak. Chances are high we will meet almost no one else for most of the hike. \nMEET: Your leader at the East Canyon Trail Head at 7:00AM for a 7:15AM SHARP departure up the canyon. \nDIRECTIONS: To East canyon Trail Head ( 34.35065\, -118.54585):\nExit the I-5 freeway if going North\, at Calgrove Blvd. Turn West and follow Calgrove around a curve and through one signal. You are now on the Old Road. Pass Towsley Cyn on the right; keep going along the road South for 0.8 miles\, Look for cars and trailhead on the right. Park on the Road (if you do not want to pay for parking). \nBRING: 2 liters water\, snack/lunch\, hiking poles. Good shoes with tead. If the day is cool\, bring an extra layer\, especially if going to Mission Peak\, as it usually is windy. \nADVENTURE PASS: Not required \nDOGS: Ok\, if on a leash and well-behaved with other dogs / people. \nLEADER(s): Paul H and Gary S.

SUMMARY:Brown Mountain Dam Waterfall
DESCRIPTION:https://www.alltrails.com/trail/us/california/brown-mountain-dam-waterfall \nHello Fellow Hikers\,\nHistorical Landmark Brown Mountain Dam sits right in the Middle of the Arroyo Seco River. This 81 foot waterfall quickly transports you from the suburbans to a natural wonderland. This dam was built in the early 1940’s and has become a big part of the wildlife below. Not uncommon to come across a bear in this area as the water is a important resource for the wildlife in this area. Besides the dam expect to cross the river a good 20 times and a few bridges. Throughout the trail it is covered with lush greenery\, from the canopy trees to wildflowers and plants. This is a very popular area so starting early is a good idea to find parking and be done before the hot temperatures hit. Carpooling at our same meetup spot will be offered for anyone who wishes to carpool or follow to the trailhead (Best donuts located 2325 Kuehner Dr # 127 Simi Valley off the 118 freeway at 7:00 am) I have attached the AllTrails link for stats and photos. https://www.alltrails.com/trail/us/california/brown-mountain-dam-waterfall \nTrail out and back\nMiles 8.6\nElevation Gain 652 ft\nRated easier side of moderate\nDogs allowed\nParking free paved lot or neighborhood street (AllTrail states a Adventure Pass is required but I have never used one here or seen anyone else so not sure if this is typo) \nAs of now there is no sweeper for this hike so please know if you feel you can not finish for any reason please turn back early \nPlease check back on hike info as rain\, heat advisory\, strong winds or low attendance may cause the hike to be rescheduled \nWe will always follow Jim’s Golden Rules: \n\nHike your own hike\nPlease stop at every junction and split to wait for others to catch up\n\nPlease remember to bring all essentials you’ll need for a hike\n(water\,hat\,sunglasses\,hiking boot/hiking shoes poles if needed snacks) \nLiability Disclaimer:\nAnd last….The Organizer\, Co Organizer\, Assistant Organizers and Event hosts in this group are not professional guides. The function of the Organizer is only to organize the trip. Each person who signs up for an Event is responsible for his or her own safety and the safety of his or her guest. Remember this is your hike. All responsibilities are of your own once you attend. Please be aware of your limit. During outdoor activity you can encounter bodily injury\, snake bites\, sunburn\, overheating\, etc. This is not within our control and we ask that you are prepared for any of the above once you sign up for an Event. If you need to take several breaks (not counting quick breather breaks) and stops throughout a hike\, the hike maybe too much for your ability. Please check each event for miles\, elevation gain\, and difficulty rating. The higher the elevation gain means more incline and less leveled off sections. We offer all levels of hikes from moderate to hard to advanced only. We encourage everyone to not give up work on your core by joining our easier moderate Events and then joining our harder hikes once you are ready. 😊

SUMMARY:Full Moon hike Angel Vista - Easy Intermediate
DESCRIPTION:3.0 miles\, 800′ gain\, easy-intermediate. \nLet’s enjoy the gorgeous sunset and the full moon\, and fun loaded potluck picnic at the beautiful Angel Vista! \nThis hike is rated easy-intermediate because it is a continuous incline for 1.5 miles. This isn’t real steep\, but it is continuous\, and many beginner hikers have indicated this should be rated intermediate. \nThat said\, there is no reason a fit beginner cannot complete this hike. If needed\, just stop and rest along the way\, even if it’s every 50 steps. This is not a conditioning hike\, it is a social hike\, and you really can’t get lost. \nThe only junction is 200 yards before the top\, where we’ll turn right to complete the climb. \nAt the top\, there is a picnic table and 360 degree incredible views that are especially wonderful at night. We’ll have a snack-share social event at the top for 30-60 minutes before heading back the way we came. Please bring some food and drink to share\, and utensils of your item requires it. \nThe top has been known to sometimes be very cool and windy. Please bring something to put on in case it is that way at the top. \nInteresting Notes \nTree Tobacco \nThe Cahuilla Indians used the leaves interchangeably with other tobacco species in hunting rituals and as a poultice to treat swellings\, bruises\, cuts\, wounds\, boils\, sores\, inflamed throat\, and swollen glands. It does not contain nicotine. \nIt contains anabasine\, a similar compound\, which is highly toxic to humans and animals. It is more toxic than nicotine. Ingestion of the leaves can be fatal. It is being investigated for use as a biofuel. All parts of this plant are toxic. Used as an insecticide. Do not smoke. \nElderberry \nThe blue or purple berries are gathered and made into elderberry wine\, jam\, syrup\, and pies. The entire flower cluster can be dipped in batter and fried while petals can be eaten raw or made into a fragrant and tasty tea. Spit out the seeds. Elderflower water is also used in perfumes and sweets. \nMost agree that they do need to be cooked if you are going to eat more than just a few out of hand. That’s because they have a small amount of cyanide producing glycosides\, which are released upon digestion. Fully ripe black berries are not toxic and you can eat as many as you like. Boiling or baking takes care of any “toxic” issue as does drying raw berries. \nDirections:\nRosewood Trailhead\n398 Regal Oak Ct.\nThousand Oaks\, CA 91320 \nFrom the 101\nVentu Park exit\, South (toward ocean).\nRight on Lynn Road for 1000′.\nLeft on Regal Oak Ct. for 1/3 mi.\nPark on the street \nHike Distance: 3.0 miles\nGain: 800′\nDistribution: Most of the incline occurs in the first half\, which is a continuous climb.\nDifficulty: Easy Intermediate.\nShape: Out and back.\nPace: approx. 2.0 mph.\nTrail Type: Double track\, single track.\nDuration: 3.5 hours\nDogs: Yes.\nRestrooms: No\nDrinking Fountains: No.\nParking: Free along the street. \nWhat to bring\n1 liter of water for every 3 miles.\nHiking shoes/boots. SUMMARY:**July 4th Special! Encinal Canyon to Top of the World (or close)-Intermediate
DESCRIPTION:**Note start time of 8:30!\nCome hike for “liberty and justice for all”\, or at least to be able to eat more at your holiday celebration! \nIt’s an out and back\, so go as far as you’d like and have time for. \nPlease review the guidelines to participate in our morning hikes. Here are some highlights and a link to the guidelines: \nhttps://www.meetup.com/the-weekday-trailblazers/ \nRestrictions apply for your safety and ours: \n\nDon’t show up unless you’re on the “Attending” list\nNo “Plus Ones” on this hike\nSign out if you are not attending\n\nEncinal Canyon is named for encina\, the Spanish word for the holm oak\, a lovely Mediterranean tree with holly characteristics. Holm oaks are one of the main trees used to establish truffle orchards\, but we’ll be nosing around the canyon strictly for its beauty. \nThe trail from Encinal is a smooth\, firm\, and well-traveled singletrack- climbing\, swooping and winding with a constant\, gentle slope. We’ll have fabulous views of the coast for much of the way. Close to the top\, we’ll take on the slightly steeper Etz Meloy Motorway\, then the last tenth of a mile is up a seldom-used trail to the isolated peak\, where we’ll both lose and catch our breath with a 360-degree view. \nFrom our perch above it all we’ll see Sandstone Peak to the west\, Simi Valley to the north\, Ladyface and Mt Baldy to the east and the Channel Islands to the south. \nIf you go all the way\, this is an 8 mile out and back hike\, with about 1200′ of elevation gain. If you don’t go all the way\, it’s less. \nGive yourself extra time to get to the trailhead- the roads are winding and slow. \nDirections: \nThe parking area is off the north side of Encinal Canyon Road\, almost directly across the street from the Camp 13 fire station. Park in the large dirt lot\, which is free. \nFrom the 101 Freeway\, turn south on Kanan Rd. Continue 6.2 miles\, then turn right onto Mulholland Hwy. After 0.9 miles\, veer left onto Encinal Canyon Rd. Drive 2.4 miles to the parking area\, on the right. \nFrom the Pacific Coast Highway – From the PCH\, turn up Encinal Canyon Road. Drive 5 miles\, then turn right onto Encinal Cyn Rd. Continue 1.1 miles to the parking area\, on the left. \nDISCLAIMER / RELEASE OF LIABILITY \nThe hike host is a volunteer and not responsible for the group. Safety should be a priority for everyone in the group. Please treat this meet-up as hiking with a group of friends. If you become fatigued and unable to continue the hike\, it is expected you will advise the hike host of this and return to our starting point on your own. SUMMARY:4th of July Celebration Potluck Hike - Los Padres
DESCRIPTION:3.25 miles out and back\, 600′ gain\, Easy Intermediate.\nThis event takes us to the top of a ridge\, where we can picnic and have a great view of the fireworks. \nWe enter the Los Padres trail\, through a spooky oak covered section\, then climb until we reach the fireroad at the 1/2 mile point. We’ll stop and regroup here. \nWe’ll turn right up the fireroad and climb for about a 1/2 mile to another junction\, where we’ll turn right onto the Los Robles trail. After 500 feet\, we’ll take a split off to the right and continue along the Vista Loop for another 1/2 mile until we come to the top of the ridge. There are two benches\, one at each end of the ridge. \nWe’ll have a potluck here and watch the fireworks.\nYou may wish to bring something to sit on\, such as a camp chair or a blanket. The bench and area around it will be used to place our pot luck items. \nWe’ll follow the reverse route back to the cars sometime after the fireworks. It will be dark on the return trip\, so please bring a light. \nPlease bring something to eat and drink\, we’ll share snacks and drinks.\nIf your item requires it\, bring plates and utensils to share. \nHike Distance: 3.25 miles\nGain: 600′\nDistribution: Most of the incline well distributed in the first half.\nDifficulty: Easy Intermediate.\nShape: Out and Back\nPace: approx. 2.0 mph.\nTrail Type: Fire Road\, Single-Track\, and Double-Track.\nTrail Variations:\nSeveral extended inclines of 1000 steps.\nSeveral steep sections of 300 steps\, but no hands required.\nDuration: 3.0 hours\nDogs: Yes.\nRestrooms: No\nDrinking Fountains: No.\nParking: Free along street. \nWhat to bring: 1 liter of water for every 3 miles.\nHiking shoes/boots\nFlashlight or headlamp.\nSunscreen and/or hat as needed.\nSnacks and/or beverages to share. \nHosting \nRoute: The host knows the route. A pic of the route LINK \nNavigation: Host memory\, enhanced by GPS navigation as needed \nHike type: Social.\nWe won’t be hiking at a fast pace because this is a social hike\, not a conditioning hike. There is nothing wrong with stopping\, even if it means every 50 steps. \nStops:\nThe host may designate stopping points to let others catch up. We will stop at junctions to make sure everybody makes any turns or chooses the correct direction at splits\, else something will be used to mark the direction\, usually a large arrow made of baking soda or sticks. There may not always be a sweeper designated to be the last hiker. \nInteresting Notes\nThese are a couple plants you are likely to see on this hike: \nYucca\nWhite flowers on stalk. Stalk is often missing\, leaving only the spires from which it grows. Stalks are very strong and light\, so they make good walking sticks. Needles on end of spires. Chopped up root can be uses as shampoo or soap. Roasted root can be eaten like a potato. Illegal to remove live stick in CA. \nPronounced with short u. Dried leaves make good tinder. To eat root\, remove skin and core\, boil 15 minutes. Then fry or bake. Flowers are mildly sweet. Adam says they taste like radishes. The fruit is also edible\, but bitter if not ripe. To access fibers: Soak for a month in water\, lightly pound leaves with rock or club\, or scrape off skin. Roll between hands\, then pull and separate fibers. Weave into cordage. \nWild Cucumber\nToxic. Boil fruit in water to make spikes easy to remove. Inside is a natural luffa. Tubars (thickened part of a stem\, usually underground\, like the potato) can be crushed and thrown into water to immobilize fish. \nAlmost the entire plant is poisonous. Although wild cucumbers are related to the familiar\, domestic vegetable\, the prickly “cucumbers” consist not of fleshy fruit\, but of two seed chambers containing lacy netting. \nDirections \nLos Padres Trailhead\n15 Los Padres Dr.\nThousand Oaks\, CA\, 91361 \nFrom I-101:\nWest of CA-23\, I-101\, exit S. Moorpark Rd.\nSouth on Moorpark Rd. north for 1000 ft.\nLeft on Los Padres Dr.\nAfter 200 ft\, trailhead on the right.\nPark on the street. \nFAQ\nHiking Plus Page Links\nDisclaimer / Release of Liability

SUMMARY:A longer Sycamore Canyon evening hike: Joanne's route
DESCRIPTION:PLEASE NOTE THE PARKING/MEETUP LOCATION DESCRIBED BELOW (IT’S NOT WENDY & POTRERO).\nRoute is a past favorite with the Weekday Trailblazers and Geo-hikes. Joanne is visiting SoCal\, will attend\, just like old times! Hike is 9.2 miles and about 1150ft up. Pace will be moderate (~2.5 MPH). It’s a longer than usual evening hike and a solid workout. We will head down the paved Sycamore Canyon Road and drop into the canyon\, make a right onto the Ranch Center Road and take it up hill and out of the canyon until we reach some old water tanks. A left turn and descend down the Ranch Center Fire Road\, returning us to the bottom of Sycamore Canyon near the ranger’s house\, the campground and where we will take a quick break and regroup. After\, head back up the Sycamore Canyon Road to our cars. Note: the Ranch Center Road and the Ranch Center Fire Road are different roads. \nHike is cross-posted with Geo-hikes: https://www.meetup.com/https-www-meetup-com-geo-hikes/events/294357984/ \nBRING A HEADLAMP OR FLASHLIGHT! \nDIRECTIONS:\nTake Highway 101 to Thousand Oaks. Exit at Wendy Drive. Go south (towards the ocean) on Wendy. At Lynn turn right\, then left at Reino that turns into Potrero Road. Take Potrero to Pinehill and turn right and park (Do not park on Potrero as you need a permit). Walk back along Potrero to its intersection with Big Sycamore Canyon Road that is more or less across from 4153 Potrero Road-don’t pester folks at 4153 Potrero and keep your voices down. We will start hike there. There are no restrooms at the trailhead. \nEssentials :\nBring water and a snack. Be willing to get a good workout! Bring your cellphone\, a headlamp or flashlight. \nDISCLAIMER / RELEASE OF LIABILITY\nIMPORTANT\, PLEASE READ BELOW IN ITS ENTIRETY:\nThe hike host is a volunteer and not responsible for the group. SUMMARY:Sycamore Canyon Hike from the Ocean
DESCRIPTION:HIKE DETAILS:\nThis is a gentler hike for Thursday\, hopefully there will be a marine layer at the beach since we are starting at 9:00. This hike will go from the beach up to the picnic table on the fire road\, approximately 5.5 miles. Most of the hike is exposed\, but hopefully we will have some fog. Bring sunscreen and bug spray. No dogs. \nWe will meet in the Day Use parking lot at Sycamore Canyon Campground and start off along the main Sycamore Canyon road and turn up to the fire road where we will climb up to the picnic table (hopefully no water or very little at the bottom). If you want to turn left at the picnic table and go up to where the Ray Miller trail meets the fire road (another mile up and mile back) you can do that and then turn around. We will follow the fire road down to the parking lot. \nDirections: \nWe will be meeting at the Sycamore Canyon Campground and day use parking area on Pacific Coast hwy. This trailhead and parking area is a few miles south from the La Jolla Canyon Parking area where we go to hike the Ray Miller Trail. \nParking is available in the campground for $12 (or free with a State Parking Permit\, the 2022 Parking Permit is still good through 2023). There may not be free parking on PCH. \nThere are also restrooms at the day parking lot. \nDISCLAIMER / RELEASE OF LIABILITY \nIMPORTANT\, PLEASE READ BELOW IN ITS ENTIRETY: \nThe hike host is a volunteer and not responsible for the group. THANK YOU GARIN! \nThe hike starts at Dillon Divide\, a trailhead/ turnout\, on Little Tujunga Canyon. We follow a dirt road for a short distance until a single-track trail turns off left into Pacoima Canyon. It is a nice hike downhill into the canyon. Once in the canyon\, we follow trails and the creek bed: we cross the creek several times. Bring poles to help with stepping stones. The trail will take us to Dutch Louie Tunnel which has water flowing out of it. You do not need to got into the tunnel but if you do\, your feet will get wet\, so plan accordingly (water shoes?). \n(History: A prospector carved the tunnel through the rock to divert the creek\, so he could mine for gold in a dry creek bed. The tunnel is a 100-150 feet long and it still has the creek running through it. Here is some fun stuff about the mine\, Dutch Louie\, and other historical and geological stuff about the area:\nhttps://www.secretmines.com/p/pacoima-canyon-mines.html ) \nAfter the tunnel\, we will continue a little further up steam to the picturesque Dagger Flat area to snack before heading back the same way up out of the canyon. \nMEET YOUR LEADER:\nAt Dillon Divide at 7.00AM for a 7:15AM start down the trail. \nBRING: Plenty of water (3 liters recommended)\, electrolytes (e.g. Gatorade). You will get wet feet – wear waterproof hiking boots or have water shoes.\nNOTE: FOR EVERYONE’S SAFETY\, IF YOU WANT TO GO IN THE TUNNEL WITH OTHERS – BRING/ WEAR A CLOSE-FITTING MASK WHEN IN IT. \nCARPOOLS: We do not Organize these. However\, due to LIMITED PARKING at the Trailhead\, if you can carpool with friends you trust\, you can meet in NORTH SCV by STARBUCKS (address: 16548 Soledad Cyn Rd\, Santa Clarita\, CA 91387)\, in the Sand Cyn / Soledad Cyn Rd\, VONS strip mall lot\, off 14 Hwy. If you are familiar with this route\, take it). \nFrom North (A/V):\nTake SR-14 South. Exit at Sand Canyon – Exit 9. On the off ramp\, keep in left lane and go up left on to Soledad Canyon. Almost immediately\, at the light\, turn left over the highway and keep going straight on to Sand Canyon – watch out for the 4 way STOP after the In-n-Out burger! \nBoth directions:\nNext (it’s another 10.6 miles total from 14) … Continue on Sand Canyon\, passing all the mansions\, past Placerita Canyon Rd. on your right\, etc.\, keep going straight\, as you enter the Angeles National Forest and continue up!up!up! along Sand Canyon Road\, until you see a winged memorial at a bad corner (on the right side). Shortly after this\, you will go around a sharp left hand bend and crest the hill (on this saddler you are now 6.1 miles from the highway and have another 4.2 miles to go); Bear Divide Vista picnic/parking area is immediately on the right.\nContinue 4.1 miles down the other side and eventually up around some bad curves\, until you see Dillon Divide\, a white gate on the left ( 34.34461\, -118.34959). \nPARKING: BE AWARE OF FAST CARS\, AT TRAIL HEAD\, PLEASE PARK STRAIGHT IN\, close as possible together\, and do not block the white gate. \nLIMITED PARKING but there are several turnouts below and above the gate – SEE DIAGRAM IN PHOTO ALBUM. \nAdventure Pass: No. There are no bathrooms at trail head but plenty of bushes. \nDogs: OK\, if kept on a leash and well behaved around other dogs and people with poles. \nLeaders: Paul Huskey and Gary S

SUMMARY:Hike with Beach Party and Fire - SUMMER!
DESCRIPTION:2.7 miles\, 650′ gain\, Easy-Intermediate. \nA hike\, then a potluck party on the beach with a fire.\nCome for the hike\, the beach party\, or both! \nNote: GPS has taken people to the incorrect location. Please read the written directions to verify. \nPlease post in the comments if you will bring a fire wood bundle as your pot luck item. \nFirewood (no construction wood please):\nnone yet \nThe Hike. 2 – 3:30p.\nThis hike is on the easy end of the intermediate spectrum. Beginners are welcome\, but if it gets too hard\, they can always turn around and go back the way we came. Nearly all of the elevation gain is in the first half. \nThis is a social hike. The event host will be moving slowly and stopping at various points to let people catch up. Those that wish to move ahead at a faster pace\, are welcome to do so if they know the route\, but are on their own regarding navigation. \nWe meet at the Sycamore Canyon Trail head inside of Sycamore Canyon Campground at Point Mugu State Park. This is a counter-clockwise loop hike because of the shape of the route. \nFrom the trailhead\, we head up a mostly flat trail for about a 1/2 mile. Left onto the Overlook Trail\, climbing 400′ over the next mile. It ends\, and we turn left. We follow the ridge for about 1/2 mile\, with about 200′ of loss and 100′ of gain. \nFor return\, we follow our tracks back to the scenic trail\, turn right\, and follow it down for about 3/4 mile\, again reaching Big Sycamore Canyon Trail\, and turning right back to our starting point. \nThe Beach Party. 4 – 9:30p.\nWe’ll go back to our cars and gather up our things for the beach party. From the trail head\, it’s about 1/4 mile to the camp ground parking lot\, then another 1/4 mile to the beach party area across the road at Sycamore Cove Beach. There are picnic tables and fire pits\, but we must supply our own wood to burn. There is usually wood for sale at the camp ground across the street. \nIf your pot luck item requires utensils\, please bring them. \nThe fire pits on the beach are first come\, first serve. We have members that will arrive early in the morning to secure a fire pit and tables. \nPlease bring something warm to put on. It can get cool and windy near the beach as the sun drops. A chair and blanket recommended\, water shoes if going in the water (gravel). \nSunset: 8:10p. \nPrior beach events:\n4/22/2023\n7/30/2022\n10/2021 \nHike\nDistance: 2.7 miles\nGain: 650\nDistribution: All the incline is in the first half.\nDifficulty: Beginner end of intermediate spectrum.\nShape: Counter-Clockwise upside-down lollipop\nPace: approx. 2.0 mph.\nTrail Type: Fire road\, double track\, and single track.\nDuration: 1.5 hours (hike)\, 4 hours (beach party)\nDogs: No.\nRestrooms: Yes\nDrinking Fountains: Yes. \nParking\nPrices from 4/22/2023: Campground lot\, $12 ($11 62+)\, gates close at 10p.
