DESCRIPTION:This is a Beginner’s Backpacking trip.\nRSVP Opens: Saturday\, June 8\, 2024 8:00 AM\nSpace is very limited. \nAbout Me:\nI am not a professional guide or backpacking instructor.\nIn 2017 I asked a Facebook backpacking group in Virginia about learning how to backpack. Shortly after\, I met up with a stranger who showed me the ropes. I’ve been learning from those more experienced than I am\, and that’s still the way it is today. It’s finally time to return the favor!\nI joined San Diego Backpackers in 2020. I’ll be hosting a series of Backpacking 101 trips that progress in mileage. Other than that\, I specialize in leading out-of-state adventures and river trips. 🌼 \nPlease read the following in its entirety. \nSweetwater to Granite Springs in Cuyamaca Rancho State Park\nDifficulty: Moderate (Used often for beginning backpacking)\nTrail Description: Well maintained with a steady incline to camp\nLength: Approximately 8 miles total and 1\,100′ gain/loss\nCamp Description: Primitive sites with a pit toilet.\nWater: Seasonal spring with a pump\, recommended to carry all water.\nSunset: ~8:00PM\nHighs/Lows: 80s/50s \nPark requires fees. I will go ahead of time for recon\, park fee information (I believe it’s $5 per person)\, and information regarding the permits to use Granite Springs (first come\, first served). More information to come.\nPark Brochure\nAll Trails \n🌼 We’ll meet in the day picnic parking inside the Green Valley Campground at 10:00AM to check in and pay fees. (Time may change based on availability. Please be flexible.) After we square away park fees\, we’ll move our vehicles to the parking lot at the Harvey Moore Trailhead. \n🌼 There are no campfires allowed. To use a stove to prepare meals or drinks\, please obtain the required California Campfire Permit. Campfire permits are necessary to use a barbecue\, lantern\, or stove outside a developed recreation area.\nGet your free permit here. \nDuring our trip we will cover the following skills and more:\n(Some skills will be theory.)\n🌼 Leave No Trace principles\n🌼 Campsite selection\n🌼 Setting camp\n🌼 Filtering water\n🌼 Using the restroom\n🌼 Gear (preferences\, how to use\, etc.)\n🌼 Navigation\n🌼 Useful apps\n🌼 Personal locator beacons \nWhat should you bring?\nThe 10 Essentials\nGeneral Backpacking Check List\n🌼 Please be sure you are properly equipped for this trip and that all of your gear is in working order.\n🌼 If you are needing to borrow pieces of gear\, please let me know. Members of SDB have kindly offered to loan out some bits. There are also backpacking items available for rent at REI.\n🌼 Remember\, there may be no water available in camp. Please bring all of your water. DESCRIPTION:Starting at Descanso Gardens\, this will be a bicycle tour of the hills\, creeks and neighborhoods in the triangle bounded by routes/highways 2\, 210 and 134. Points of Interest along the way will include: \n\nThe historic Colorado Bridge (designed and built in 1912)\nDevils Gate Dam (near JPL\, now abandoned)\nBrookside Park (a large aquatic center)\nThe Gamble House (Architect Frank Lloyd Wright’s masterpiece)\nThe Norton Simon Museum (originally the Pasadena Art Museum)\nPasadena Historic City Hall (in Old Pasadena)\nArroyo Seco Park (nice trails to ride\, if bikes are ok)\nGreat view of Eagle Rock\nAnd more!\n\n🧑‍🌾After the ride we will have an opportunity to explore Descanso Gardens \nRide is about 25 miles (1 mile dirt motorway) with 2\,000 feet total ascent. \nDIRECTIONS\nWe’ll meet in front of the Descanso Garden Visitor Center

SUMMARY:Hawk Canyon lollipop - Potluck hike
DESCRIPTION:4.2 miles\, 700′ gain\, easy-intermediate.\nEasier option: 2.7 miles\, 500′ gain\, fit beginner. \nThis is a pot-luck hike. We’ll be stopping at the 3/4 point by a picnic table\, so please bring food and drink to share\, and any utensils your items might require. You may wish to bring your own cup\, plate\, and utensils in case there aren’t any. \nWe have had occasions where there were no utensils\, so it might be wise to at least bring your own. \nWe start at Conejo Canyons Trail Head\, 2010 Conejo Center Dr\, Thousand Oaks\, CA 91320. \nWe’ll hike downhill from the trailhead for 0.6 miles. \nFor the regular route\, we’ll turn left and continue uphill for 0.6 miles on the Western Plateau trail and follow the fire road around to the right at the top\, then mostly flat for about a mile\, then dropping for another 1/2 mile. \nAt the bottom and when coming to a junction\, turn right onto Hawk Canyon. Our picnic spot is 1/4 mile up Hawk Canyon at the table under the trees. \nFor the easier option\, instead of turning left at the first junction\, we’ll turn right. After 0.6 miles\, the picnic area will be on the left. \nAfter the potluck\, we’ll continue up Hawk Canyon in our clockwise loop for 0.6 mile where the trail ends back at the Western Plateau trail. Take a left up the hill back to Conejo Center Dr. For those that came on the easier option\, it’s a return the way you came. \n** If you plan on leaving before the group\, please familiarize yourself with the planned route\, which can be accessed by clicking on the below link: \nThe Hike\nDistance: 4.2 miles / 2.7 miles\nGain: 700′ / 500′\nDistribution: Well distributed.\nDifficulty: Easy Intermediate / Fit Beginner\nShape: Lollipop.\nPace: 2.0 mph.\nTrail Type: Fire road and single track.\nTrail Variations: Rolling stroll and ramp.\nDuration: 3.5 hours\nDogs: Yes.\nRestrooms: No\nDrinking Fountains: No.\nParking: Free along street. \nWhat to bring\n1 liter of water for every 3 miles.\nSnacks and/or beverages to share\nHiking shoes preferred\, but athletic shoes will be OK.\nFlashlight or headlamp.\nSunscreen and/or hat as needed.\nInsect repellent (optional). \nHosting\nRoute: The host knows the route. This hike will include an extended stop for a snack and beverage share at the half way point.
