SUMMARY:NEWLY RESTORED GOLD CANYON TRAIL TO YERBA BUENA RIDGE
DESCRIPTION:BEFORE YOU WILL BE MOVED TO THE GOING LIST\, YOU WILL NEED TO UPDATE YOUR CDH PROFILE (The three questions must be answered with a “yes”) IF YOU HAVE NOT ALREADY DONE SO\nHOW TO UPDATE YOUR PROFILE:\nhttps://wp.me/P9MbG4-hC \nGold Canyon trail has been recently restored by my trail Angel Sean & the Forest Service. It’s been closed since the 2009 Station fire and is now officially opened. I had the privilege of hiking this trail two weeks ago. Not only is it beautiful but it is overwhelmingly filled with wildflowers. So\, I would like to share this newly restored trail with others before the wildflowers vanish. \nWe will start by scrambling down a use path off the main road. We will walk along the creek until we reach the Gold Canyon wash for about a mile\, just before we start ascending the newly restored trail. \nAlong this route you will be rewarded with an array of wildflowers until we reach the Yerba Buena road. From here we will hike along the ridge to the high point then have snacks on the water tank. \nWe will have 360-degree views of Mt. Lukens and the surrouding the Tujunga mountains. \nThis hike is posted with another meetup group. \nStats:\nLevel-Intermediate/NO BEGINNERS PLEASE!\nDistance-8-9 miles (approximate)\nGain- 2000 ft\nTerrain- maintained\, rocky & single track trails\nRestrooms- not available at trailhead.\nDogs- NOT ALLOWED ON THIS HIKE\nParking- along the road by the trailhead \nDIRECTIONS: ***PLEASE PAY CLOSE ATTENTION***\nThe original trailhead is blocked due to the new residents who are not hiker friendly. Therefore we need to start at MILE MARKER 1.38 a short distance from the main trailhead.\nPlease find parking along the road. \nFROM THE 210 WEST-take the Sunland Blvd exit and turn right. Make a left on Oro vista Ave for 4.6 mile and follow the road to Mile Marker 1.38 which will be on the right hand side. (see photo attached).\nOro Vista Ave turns into Big Tujunga Canyon Road. \nCoordinates:\nhttps://goo.gl/maps/bLPvgR9Lvv5Q1hpR6 \nWHAT TO BRING: A POSITIVE ATTITUDE!\nLunch/snacks\, at least 3 liters of water/electrolytes\, Lug soles with good tread\, poles if you like/have them\, and THE 10 ESSENTIALS!\nHand sanitizer & mask (optional) \nMy cell: 562 331 3793 \nCDH POLICY: Any member with two NO SHOWS on CDH events since 2017 will lose their membership with CDH. Members will not be allowed on this and future events until they have updated their CDH profile by answering the new questions as well as having a recognizable face photo of themselves. This update cannot be done via an app\, an iPhone or any other type of a hand-held phone. It must be done on a computer.\nFAILURE TO DO SO COULD RESULT IN YOU BEING EXCLUDED FROM MY EVENTS IN THE FUTURE.

SUMMARY:Fryman Canyon to Mulholland
DESCRIPTION:It’s that time of the year again-early bird hikes! We will do the route we did last time. Sachika is the event host and it will be at her pace!\nNot for beginners. \nWrite up is Don’s \nTHE STATS \nDistance: 8> miles \nElevation Gain: 1600 cumulative \nRating: 5/10 \nTrail\, out & back on fire roads\, single track & streets \nWe will check out “The Rain Forest” and take a swing (if it’s there)! \nWe’ll be meeting on nearby side streets thus avoiding the usual parking fees. \nDog friendly! \nLocated in the eastern Santa Monica Mountains off of Laurel Canyon Boulevard\, 128-acre Wilacre park provides access to the Betty B. Dearing trail\, and the Cross Mountain Park trail system to Fryman Canyon Park\, Coldwater Canyon Park\, and Franklin Canyon Park. A large parking lot\, restrooms\, drinking fountains and a picnic area as well as its easy accessibility by car or MTA bus make Wilacre Park a popular destination for hikers and dog walkers\, especially on weekends. \nDIRECTIONS \nFrom the 101 Freeway\, exit Laurel Canyon Boulevard. Travel south one mile and turn right onto Laurel Terrace Dr. The address above is a private residence and I’m only using it for the purpose of identifying our meeting place. Do not go to this house! There should be ample side street parking in the area and we’ll meet at Laurel Terrace Dr and the beginning of Viewcrest Rd. \n*** \nPLEASE – Know your limits and abilities. Bring snacks and drink plenty of liquids when hiking. Check weather conditions and dress accordingly and be aware of your surroundings at all times. Watching out for poison oak\, snakes\, ticks\, uneven footing\, spectacular views\, beautiful fauna all while interacting with awesome (usually) fellow hikers can be extremely hazardous\, rewarding and fun. \nThe Farzan Rule: Posted hike times are the time the hike starts or we leave from a posted shuttle location. I’m aware other Meetup groups offer a grace period for late arrivals; we don’t. It’s your responsibility to know the location of the meeting spot and be there and ready to participate at the posted time. If you have any concerns about the directions feel free to contact the organizer of the event\, preferably in advance of the event and not at the start time. I’m of the opinion that it’s not fair to delay an event when the majority of attendees have arrived on-time. (so named after a conversation I had with a certain un-named member) \nRSVP’s: If you RSVP for an event be responsible and update your RSVP if your plans change. If your plans change at the last second and you’re not able to update your RSVP also let us know. In my opinion a no-show is someone who has no regard for following the guidelines we request from our members and will risk being removed from future events that have a limit. \nVHC HIKE RATING SCALE \nRating a hike is subjective\, meaning the difficulty of a hike will be in direct relation to how often you hike and the type of hike you prefer. Keep in mind that any hike can have the following: un-even hiking surfaces\, various obstructions\, water and/or water crossings or bouldering and/or rock hopping. SUMMARY:Danielson Monument potluck hike
DESCRIPTION:**[6.5 miles\, 1300′ gain\, intermediate](https://www.meetup.com/Hiking-Plus/messages/boards/thread/50879781)** \nLet’s enjoy hiking to the Danielson Monument in the Boney Mountain Wilderness and potluck! \nThe trail is filled with the colors of spring.\nWe’ll hike up to Danielson monument and enjoy potluck and “Peace\, Love and Joy.” \nPlease bring food and drinks to share.\nWe’ll have our typical **[snack-share](https://www.meetup.com/Hiking-Plus/messages/boards/thread/50879772) social event at the top** for 60-90 minutes before heading back the way we came. Please bring some food and drink to share. If your item requires plates or utensils (ex: rice\, macaroni salad\, etc.)\, please bring them. \n**You will see several plants of note:** \n***[Tree Tobacco](https://secure.meetupstatic.com/photos/event/e/1/1/a/highres_502857626.jpeg)*** \nThe Cahuilla Indians used the leaves interchangeably with other tobacco species in hunting rituals and as a poultice to treat swellings\, bruises\, cuts\, wounds\, boils\, sores\, inflamed throat\, and swollen glands. It does not contain nicotine. \nIt contains anabasine\, a similar compound\, which is highly toxic to humans and animals. It is more toxic than nicotine. Ingestion of the leaves can be fatal. It is being investigated for use as a biofuel. All parts of this plant are toxic. Used as an insecticide. Do not smoke. \n***[Elderberry](https://secure.meetupstatic.com/photos/event/e/1/1/b/highres_502857627.jpeg)*** \nThe blue or purple berries are gathered and made into elderberry wine\, jam\, syrup\, and pies. The entire flower cluster can be dipped in batter and fried while petals can be eaten raw or made into a fragrant and tasty tea. Spit out the seeds. Elderflower water is also used in perfumes and sweets. \nMost agree that they do need to be cooked if you are going to eat more than just a few out of hand. That’s because they have a small amount of cyanide producing glycosides\, which are released upon digestion. Fully ripe black berries are not toxic and you can eat as many as you like. Boiling or baking takes care of any “toxic” issue as does drying raw berries. \nHike Distance: 6.5 miles\nGain: 1300′\nDifficulty: [Intermediate]((https://www.meetup.com/Hiking-Plus/messages/boards/thread/50879781))\nShape: Out and back.\nPace: approx. 2.0 mph.\nTrail Type: Double track\, single track.\nDuration: 5 hours\, 3 for just the hike part.\nDogs: Not allowed in the state park.\nRestrooms: No\nDrinking Fountains: No.\nParking: Free along the street. \n**Meet at: Wendy Trail Head**\n4128 Potrero Rd\nThousand Oaks\, CA 91361\nWhere S. Wendy Dr. ends at Potrero Rd. \n**What to bring:**\n1 liter of water for every 3 miles.\nHiking shoes/boots. SUMMARY:Wildlife Tunnel Loop - Intermediate. Easier Option: Fit Beginner
DESCRIPTION:**Intermediate – 3 miles\, 1000′ gain**\n**Easier Option – Fit Beginner\, 1.4 miles\, 525′ gain.** \n[This hike](https://secure.meetupstatic.com/photos/event/c/c/3/5/highres_502012277.jpeg) is relatively short\, but the middle portion is a rugged and continuous incline for 1 mile with about 700′ of gain. Even though we’ll be taking this trail at the pace of a social hike\, beginners may will find this hike to be too hard. \nWe’ll start this hike by parking on the south side of the CA-118 at the Rocky Peak exit. We’ll walk west along the Santa Susana Pass Rd. for about 500 feet\, and directly across from Lilac Ln\, we’ll enter a trail. We’ll move along a relatively flat section from 1/2 mile\, then turn right and make a gradual climb until we reach the wildlife tunnel. \nThis is a tunnel underneath the CA-118 freeway\, built so that animals can cross. We’ll regroup here\, then continue up a strenuous and rugged climb for 1 mile until we reach the Rocky Peak Fire Rd. We’ll regroup again\, then turn left for 500′ until we reach the Hummingbird Trail. \nWe’ll find a couple large rocks and a bench there. We’ll have a social event lasting 30 – 60 minutes\, then head down the Rocky Peak Fire Road until it ends at the CA-118 freeway. We’ll then cross the freeway back to our cars. \n**Easier Option:** Hike up Rocky Peak 0.7 miles to the Hummingbird bench. This is about 1/3 up Rocky Peak. \n**Interesting Notes:** \nHere are a couple plants you are sure to see on this hike: \n*[California Sagebrush](https://secure.meetupstatic.com/photos/event/c/c/3/8/highres_502012280.jpeg)* \nAromatic when crushed. AKA\, common sage\, coastal sage. Sunflower family. Cowboys used to ride through it and brush up against the pine-shaped leaves\, coming home with the smell on their clothes and giving rise to the nickname “Cowboy Cologne.” Not a true sage. Can be used as a cooking spice and can be made into a tea. Tear off some needles by running your hand up the stalk and smell the aroma. \n*[Purple Sage](https://secure.meetupstatic.com/photos/event/c/c/3/c/highres_502012284.jpeg)* \nGrey-green leaves. Aromatic when crushed. Purple flowers. Aka\, Tobacco Sage\, with mild hallucinogenic properties when smoked. Can be used as a spice or made into a tea. Tea has medicinal affects: Antiviral\, gargle for sore throats\, reduce hay fever symptoms and other drying actions. In the last summer\, fall\, and winter months\, the flowers will have turned brown and the leaves take on a greyer color. \n**Directions**\nRocky Peak Exit\, South Side of CA-118\nSimi Valley\, CA 93065\n34.268396\, -118.636139 \n*From the 118*\nExit 32 Rocky Peak Rd.\nPark on south of the freeway along Santa Susanna Pass Rd. \n*From the 101 @ CA-23*\nNorth CA-23 for 8.4 miles.\nEast I-118 for 14 miles.\nExit 32 Rocky Peak Rd.\nPark on south of the freeway along Santa Susanna Pass Rd. \n*The Hike*\nDistance: 3 miles\, 3.5 hours\nElevation Gain: 1000′\n[Difficulty:](https://www.meetup.com/Hiking-Plus/messages/boards/thread/50879781) Intermediate.\nPace: 2.0 mph\nDogs: Yes\nRestrooms: No\nDrinking Fountains: No\nParking: Free\, south side of CA-118\nTrail: Single Track\, Double Track\, and rugged water path.\nPurpose: Social \n*What to Bring:*\n1-2 liters of water.\n[Snacks and/or beverages to share](https://www.meetup.com/Hiking-Plus/messages/boards/thread/50879772)\nHiking shoes preferred\, but athletic shoes will be OK.\nFlashlight or headlamp. \n[FAQ](https://www.meetup.com/Hiking-Plus/pages/23772638/Frequently_Asked_Questions/)\n[Disclaimer / Release of Liability](https://www.meetup.com/Hiking-Plus/pages/29622459/Is_Hiking_Dangerous/)

SUMMARY:Long Canyon - Easy cc lollipop - the back way
DESCRIPTION:**5 miles\, 800′ gain\, Easy Intermediate.**\n**Easier Option: 3.2 miles\, 400′ gain\, Fit Beginner.** \nThe address is not the address of the hike\, but a nearby address that should get you to pass by the trailhead. \nWe’ll be stopping at various points to regroup and this is not a conditioning hike. It is a social hike. \nWe will start by heading the back way from the Long Canyon trailhead parking lot and around to an asphalt road. At this point\, **if you want a shorter hike**\, turn left for 0.6 miles and 220 feet of gain\, arriving at the Rockuzzi on the left. \nOtherwise\, we’ll make our way down to the Autumn Ridge trail\, make a left\, then head for almost a mile up to the five-points junction. We’ll make a sharp left\, then another left after about 500′ at the bench\, heading down the Sunrise trail. \nAfter about 1000′\, we’ll head into the rocks into or next to the Rockcuzzi\, a natural circular indentation in the rocks\, hidden from view unless you know were it is\, for a snack share social event for 30-60 minutes. \nFinally\, we’ll continue down the Sunrise trail\, take the Woodridge Loop trail back to the asphalt road\, then head back the way we came along the Woodridge Connector back to the trail head parking lot. \n**Interesting Notes** \n*[Turkey Mullein](https://secure.meetupstatic.com/photos/event/c/d/e/e/highres_502012718.jpeg)* \nSmashed leaves can be thrown into the water to stupefy fish\, causing them to float to the surface\, a practice illegal in most states. The seeds are not toxic to birds and are enjoyed especially by doves and wild turkeys. \nAncient Greeks rolled and dried the leaves\, then used them as wicks for oil lamps. It stalks were used as torches burned at funerals. Many tribes employed the use of mullein leaf tea for coughs\, colds\, and rheumatism. They considered it to be analgesic\, anti-inflammatory\, antispasmodic\, and expectorant. The astringent and demulcent properties of the leaf tea were found useful in cases of diarrhea. \n*[Wild Oats](https://secure.meetupstatic.com/photos/event/c/d/f/2/highres_502012722.jpeg)* \nThe mature seed of the plant is used as a cereal grain. All oats have edible seeds\, although they are small and hard to harvest in most species. Oats are hard to tell apart from weedy relatives\, so the term “sowing wild oats” came to be used to describe unprofitable activities and destructive sexual liaisons of an unmarried young male that could result in children being born out of wedlock. \n**[Hike](https://secure.meetupstatic.com/photos/event/c/d/e/c/highres_502012716.jpeg)** \nDistance: 5 miles\nGain: 800\nDistribution: Most of the incline is in the middle of this hike. This hike will include an extended stop for a snack and beverage share at the 2/3 point along the hike. \nWe will stop at junctions to make sure everybody makes any turns or chooses the correct direction at splits\, else something will be used to mark the direction\, usually a large arrow made of baking soda or sticks. There may not always be a sweeper designated to be the last hiker. \nEach hiker is responsible for knowing their capability\, only attending events where they are able to sustain the described pace\, for keeping up with the group sufficiently enough to make the turns and not get left behind\, and for making sure the host is notified if they are going to split from the group. \n*Group separation:*\nSometimes hikers wish to move significantly ahead and not wait at designated stopping points. Please let the host know. They are on their own regarding route and navigation. \n**Directions:** \nWhere of Long Canyon Rd. and S. Wood Ranch Pkwy. intersect in Simi Valley. There is a free paved parking lot at the trailhead on the southwest corner. \n*From CA-23 and I-101*\nNorth CA-23\, exit Olsen Rd.\nRight (east) on Olsen Rd.\, which becomes Madera Rd.\, for 2 miles.\nRight (south) on N. SUMMARY:Dawn Mine-From Chaney Trail
DESCRIPTION:The Stats \nDistance: 7> a guess \nRating: 7 a guess \nElevation gain: a guess) \nTrail: Looped single track \nPace: Not for beginners -will be at my pace \nThe Plan \nOur route starts at Chaney Trail trailhead and follows the fire road and Sunset Ridge Trail up to Dawn Station\, then descends to the mine\, after a break we will follow the canyon out -this is a loop \nDawn Mine has been closed 🙁 – (the actual mine) \nThe Story \nOver its 50-plus years\, Dawn Mine produced more stories than gold. Enough gold was recovered to keep various over-optimistic operators looking for the bonanza that never came. Some unknown prospectors discovered gold in Millard Canyon in 1895 and small claims were staked and worked for 7 years with marginal results. Minor Bradford Peck named the mine for Dawn Ehrenfeld\, little daughter of a friend from the Randsburg Mines. Michael Ryan bought the Dawn Mine in 1902. He bore tunnels into the canyon’s rock walls and was successful for several years. He built a narrow trail up the steep slope to the Mt. Lowe Railway. Two mules\, Jack and Jill\, carried the ore to Dawn Station to be transferred to railcars and taken down to the valley for milling. After Ryan’s death in 1929\, the mines set idle for several years. In 1933 Ryan’s widow leased the holdings to Hunger\, Comstock\, and Hilton\, who bored a new\, 1\,200-foot tunnel and built a small mill. They had good success at first\, but in spite of considerable more digging\, the gold petered out. In a few more years the venture was closed down. In the 1940s and early 1950s\, other miners gave it a try but with no positive results. \nhttps://secure.meetupstatic.com/photos/event/1/2/a/600_462060298.jpeg \nDirections: Exit the 210 fwy in Pasadena at Fair Oaks and go north to Loma Alta Dr. Turn left here and then turn right on Chaney Trail (flashing yellow light overhead). Take Chaney Trail to the top\, you’ll see a gate to your right. continuing down the road past where the gate is will take you down to parking for Millard Campground\, we are not meeting down there. \nThe gate to Chaney opens at 6 am so be here on time\, the parking spaces at Chaney is very limited. \nCheck the Weather (http://www.wunderground.com/q/zmw:91001.1.99999) \n*** \nThe Fine Print \nPLEASE – Know your limits and abilities. A great hike will have all of these! \n1 – A long walk \n2 – 4 mile hike w/little elevation gain \n3 – 5 mile hike w/up to1000 ft. elevation gain \n4 – 5+ mile hike w/up to1500 ft. elevation gain (heart rate increases at times) \n5 – 7+ mile hike w/over 1500 ft. elevation gain (heart rate increasing even more at times) \n6 – 7+ mile hike w/over 2000 ft. elevation gain (at times you might be trying to remember how to perform CPR) \n7 – 5+ mile hike w/over 2000 ft. elevation gain (at times you might be muttering expletives to yourself) \n8 – 10+ mile hike w/over 3500 ft. elevation gain (at times you might be angry with the hike leader) \n9 – 10+ mile hike w/over 5000 ft. elevation gain (at times you might be thinking of reporting the hike leader to the authorities) \n10 – Use your imagination \nClass 3 Scrambling: Scrambling or un-roped climbing. You must use your hands at times to hold the terrain or find your route. This may be caused by a combination of boulders\, steepness and extreme terrain. Some Class 3 routes have ropes in place for assistance. \nDISCLAIMER / RELEASE OF LIABILITY \nIMPORTANT\, PLEASE READ BELOW IN ITS ENTIRETY: \nI am a volunteer (i.e. not liable for the group). Safety is a priority for everyone in the group. Think of this as hiking with a group of friends. \nOutdoor sports and other events we plan can be inherently dangerous and accidents may happen. By participating in any posted event\, you’re taking responsibility for your own safety and well-being. The Valencia Hiking Crew Meetup Group and its organizers are not trained leaders and we do not confirm the qualifications of any of its members to lead or participate in trips. SUMMARY:40th Anniversary E.T. Hike - 🐶s OK
DESCRIPTION:Join our Facebook group: https://www.facebook.com/groups/hikingwithdean/ \nDetails\nWe’ve been following the footsteps of ET since 2008 with the original HWD ET hike and its become one of our most popular hikes. This year we’ll be doing it on the 40th anniversary of the movie premier!  Dogs are ok on this one. \nThe open spaces and trails lacing Porter Ranch provides us the opportunity to wander the remaining vestiges of two riparian canyons and a cliff-rimmed hillside blanketed with aromatic sage. So let us set out for the suburban stronghold of Porter Ranch for a variegated loop through the hidden wilds and wild suburbia of the north valley including Aliso Canyon and Limekiln Canyon. Two oak-and sycamore-shaded canyons and eroded sedimentary outcroppings known as “The Palisades” are some of the highlights \nWe’ll be hiking on a section of the The Palisades featured in the movie\, and will take our snack break at “E.T. Park” (Aliso Canyon Park) where they filmed some scenes from ET. \nThe video below shows the location of our hike.\nThe maker did an excellent job in juxtaposing scenes from ET with present day shots. Pay particularly close attention to the opening shots\, the dirt path a bicycle is riding on\, and the van driving into a park. We will be hiking over and through these locations. \n\n\n \n\n\n  \n[vc_message message_box_color=”warning”]HIKE IS ABOUT 8.3 MILES WITH ABOUT 1\,300 FT TOTAL ASCENT AND IS RATED MEDIUM. SEE THE HIKE RATING GUIDE[/vc_message] \nLoading ...\nDirections:\nHead for the North Valley YMCA on Corbin Ave. The trail head is on the right (if you are traveling north) just before the YMCA sign. SUMMARY:Trails Cafe to Mount Hollywood to Dante’s View to Griffith Observatory...
DESCRIPTION:BEFORE YOU WILL BE MOVED TO THE GOING LIST\, YOU WILL NEED TO UPDATE YOUR CDH PROFILE IF YOU HAVE NOT ALREADY DONE SO. \n* **The three questions must be answered with a “yes”** \nNEED HELP? Go to: https://wp.me/P9MbG4-hC \nThis is not a conditioning hike. My hikes are designed to give everyone an opportunity to enjoy the trails. As a team\, we stay together and hike as fast as the slowest hiker\, sometimes it could be me. We will stop at various points to wait for the slower hikers. \nToday’s hike is 5.25 miles with an elevation gain of 780’. We will begin and end the hike at the historic Trails Café on Fern Dell Drive. We will meet at 8:30 and start at 8:45. Give yourself time to arrive and find parking\, it can get crowded. Watch for No parking signs. \nBring 2 liters of water\, snacks\, electrolytes\, hat\, sunscreen. Wear good hiking/walking shoes\, bring poles if you need them. \nBeginning at the Café\, we will hike the West Trail for about a mile before crossing over W. Observatory Road. After crossing the road\, the West Trail merges with the Mt. Hollywood trail that leads up to the top. Bring your cameras because you’ll definitely want to take pictures of the breathtaking views of Los Angeles. We will continue down the Mt. Hollywood trail and stop at Dante’s View\, the Berlin Forest\, and the George Harrison tree before reaching the Griffith Observatory. At the observatory\, we will hang out for awhile and walk around its grounds. On the last leg of our hike\, we’ll continue down the Observatory trail end our day at the Trails Café with lunch and a slice of pie. The sandwiches are really good and Huell Howser loved their pies. \nAfter lunch you can go home or walk through the Ferndell Nature Trail\, a shaded dirt path also known as Griffith Park’s Enchanted “Nature Museum.” \nLInks: \n* AllTrails map: https://www.alltrails.com/explore/map/trails-cafe-to-mount-hollywod-9b8ef27\n* Trails Café: https://www.facebook.com/TheTrailsCafe/\n* Huell Howser at Ferndell and the Trails Cafe: [https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=NW3-EpGiICk&t=9s](https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=NW3-EpGiICk&t=9s)\n* Dante’s View: [https://www.larchmontbuzz.com/larchmont-village-life/dantes-view-griffith-park/](https://www.larchmontbuzz.com/larchmont-village-life/dantes-view-griffith-park/)\n* George Harrison Tree: [https://daytrippin.com/2016/11/27/special-tree-dedicated-to-former-beatle-george-harrison-in-los-angeles/](https://daytrippin.com/2016/11/27/special-tree-dedicated-to-former-beatle-george-harrison-in-los-angeles/)\n* Berlin Forest: [https://modernhiker.com/hike/hike-to-berlin-forest/](https://modernhiker.com/hike/hike-to-berlin-forest/)\n* Griffith Observatory: [https://griffithobservatory.org/](https://griffithobservatory.org/) \n**Details:** \n* Parking: Free on street. SUMMARY:Dos Vientos - Memorial Day Picnic
DESCRIPTION:Come to the hike only (3:30p)\, picnic only (5:00p)\, or both. \nWarning: Google Maps may take you to the incorrect location\, although the address is correct. Please follow the written directions. \n3.5 miles\, 500′ gain\, or if you choose to continue\, 5.2 miles\, 1140′ gain. \nThe Hike\n3:30 pm at the parking lot entrance. \nThe hike starts on the Park View trail\, completely flat along a gravel track that moves around the Dos Vientos park. It then gently rises into the surrounding hills\, continuing onto the Powerline trail. \nThe first 1.75 miles has about 350′ of gain and another 150′ of gain on the return\, including an extended incline of about 450 steps. The extended incline is fire road\, so it isn’t especially steep. \nParts are strewn with small rubble but there are still clear foot paths along the edge. It will get the heart pumping. At the height of this point\, there is a fantastic overlook. \nFor some additional challenge\, one can continue another 0.85 miles for another 450′ of gain and 190′ on the return. It continues to the next electrical tower where the trail splits. This leads to the 2\,200 feet high Conejo Mountain in Camarillo\, CA. \nThis extension can be done by beginners\, but they will probably want to go slowly and rest a moment after each 100 steps. While not steep\, this incline is extended\, so I put this in the intermediate category. Either way\, the pace will be a leisurely 2 mph because this is a social hike\, not a conditioning hike (How hard is this hike: https://www.meetup.com/Hiking-Plus/messages/boards/thread/50879781). \nWhether you decide to take the extra segment or not\, you will be rewarded by great views. This trail offers panoramic views of the Oxnard Plain\, the Pacific Ocean\, numerous Channel Islands\, Boney Mountain\, Mugu Lagoon\, and the Topa Topa Mountains. \nThe mountainside is mixed with the remnants of a brush fire and new growth. I will be marking the trail with white arrows at junctions so that nobody gets lost and hikers can turn around at any point. \nThe Picnic\nApproximately 5:00p.\nThe location of the picnic will be at this park\, but since we aren’t reserving an area\, we’ll use whatever area is available. Our first choice will be under the awning to the right of the parking lot (heading west from Borchard) immediately after entering. If that is taken\, there are more grills just to the side of that area\, and if that is in use\, there are more areas in the park. \nThis is a pot luck picnic. Please also bring something to eat and drink\, and a little extra to share. If your item requires it\, bring plates and utensils to share. \nYou can leave your pot luck item in the car and retrieve it after the hike. Bring something to put on in case it starts to get cool. \nAlcohol IS allowed in this park.\nPhotos from 2021: https://www.meetup.com/Hiking-Plus/photos/31439360/ \nThe Park\nThe Dos Vientos building is open until 10pm on weekdays\, 6pm on weekends. The park has plenty of parking in a paved lot\, has indoor drinking fountains and bathrooms\, and various picnic areas with barbecue grills. \nNote that the main picnic area may be rented\, but is otherwise open to anybody. \nInteresting Notes.\nYou will see these on the hike. \nPrickly Pear Cactus \nInside and fruit are edible. Remove needles and scrape to remove hairs\, cut top off\, hollow out to make water container. Burn off needles. Fruit peels easily. Eat seeds and all. Use duct tape to remove thorns from hands. \nLichen \nA composite organism arising from algae\, cyanobacteria\, or both\, and often fungi. They come in many colors. Not related to moss or any plant. They get all their food from photosynthesis\, air\, water\, and minerals in their environment. Most comes from air\, and therefore\, can be used to monitor air pollution. 6% of earth’s land surface is covered by lichens. This is the paint that gives the look of the rocks of Yosemite. 20\,000 known species. Self-contained ecosystems. Some of the oldest living things. Can survive unprotected in space\, surviving vacuum\, fluctuating temperatures\, and cosmic radiation. Used for making dyes\, sometimes by boiling in water. Some are edible\, some poisonous. \nDirections: \nDos Vientos Community Park\n4801 Borchard Rd\nNewbury Park\, CA 91320\n34.175179\, -118.981733 \nFrom the 118: \nWest to CA-23.\nCA-23 south for 7.4 miles.\nUS-101 north for 4.1 miles.\nExit 47B Borchard Rd.\nBorchard Rd. south for 7 miles.\nDos Vientos park entrance on the right. \nFrom CA-23: \nCA-23 south to US-101.\nUS-101 north for 4.1 miles.\nExit 47B Borchard Rd.\nBorchard Rd. south for 7 miles.\nDos Vientos park entrance on the right. \nFrom US-101 (Camarillo/Ventura): \nUS-101 south.\nExit 47A Borchard Rd.\nBorchard Rd. south for 7 miles.\nDos Vientos park entrance on the right. \nHike Stats: \nBeginner\nDistance: 3.5 miles\, 1.5 hours\nElevation Gain: 500′ \nIntermediate\nDistance: 5.2 miles\, 2 hours\nElevation Gain: 1140′ \nPace: 2.0 mph\nDogs: Yes.\nRestrooms: Yes.\nDrinking Fountains: Yes.\nParking: Free in paved lot.\nTrail: Single track and fire road. SUMMARY:LITTLE ROCK CREEK via WINSTON RIDGE and PEAK (2 peaks on the S.C. 100 peak list)
DESCRIPTION:BEFORE YOU WILL BE MOVED TO THE GOING LIST\, YOU WILL NEED TO UPDATE YOUR CDH PROFILE (The three questions must be answered with a “yes”) IF YOU HAVE NOT ALREADY DONE SO.\nNEED HELP:\n[[go to: https://wp.me/P9MbG4-hC](go to: https://wp.me/P9MbG4-hC)](http://%5Bgo%20to:%20https//wp.me/P9MbG4-hC%5D(go%20to:%20https://wp.me/P9MbG4-hC)) \nOur Wednesday Trekkers know how to cool down on a hot day\, so we’ll do just that as the temps scare off others. I will take the group in for some cooling off fun in Little Rock Creek. The first two peaks are very easy to bag and that will be done early in the hike before it gets too warm. After that\, we’ll be dropping down a ridge all the way to Little Rock Creek as the heat builds up and hopefully we’ll find a pool deep enough to submerge in. The water is one of the coolest in the San Gabriel Mountains. After a long cool break in the Creek we’ll take the last 1.75 miles on the Burkhart Trail as it goes up to the Car or cars dropped off at The Buckhorn Campground. Total miles will be 8 miles with a 1500′ gain and a 2000′ loss in elevation. As we drop down to just a 100′ above the creek the going gets a bit steep which will require using your hands to assist in the descent. Micro spikes will help here. \nJoin me and experience the thrill of cross country hiking in the high country of the San Gabriel Mountains as we bag two peaks on the Sierra Club’s 100 peak list. The route we will be following this time has “use” trails\, for the most part\, which strong intermediate hikers will enjoy. The views along the way are spectacular and the idea of bagging some peaks along the way is a bonus. \nThis all day trek is for those of you who are looking for something a lot more challenging than the average outing. No beginners please unless you’re in top physical condition. Cross country hiking experience would help for this. If you have some place to be later in the day\, this event will not work for you. \nWe will be setting a steady pace with several breaks while staying together all the way so as not to loose anyone. \nDURATION: We’ll want to finish the hike and be back to the cars by 3:00 p.m. at the latest\, followed by lunch at The Habit Burger Grill in La Canada. \nDAY’S AGENDA \nSTART: Once we all arrive at Cloudburst Summit (7034′) at mile marker (LA 57.10)\, we’ll first drop off a car or cars at the Burkhart trailhead before taking on the 1st PEAK. \n1st PEAK: Winston Peak at 7502′ will be our highest elevation along this planned route\, and it will be bagged before heading out along THE RIDGE. \nTHE RIDGE: Winston Ridge (7003′) offers distinct continuous views over desert and high mountain country as well as overlooking THE CREEK below. \nTHE CREEK: Little Rock Creek is a desert bound creek fed by the springs high in the granite folds of Mt. Williamson. We will cross this beautiful creek at its 5640′ elevation point and enjoy a pool and COOPER CANYON FALLS. \nCOOPER CANYON FALLS: “**Cooper Canyon Falls** is a beautiful waterfall that flows almost year round\, but roars in April-May as the spring snow melts.” *Socalhiker*\nIt’s here where the WWW will most likely take their revenge out on me in an all out water fight before heading out on an uphill 1.75 mile hike in heat to Buckhorn Campground to finish the hike. PACK THOSE WATER GUNS! \nEARLIER MEETUP LOCATION AND TIME: 6:30am at the Woodland Hills Meetup location. Those who want to carpool from Woodland Hills\, can meet me at the corner of Leonora and Ponce Avenue. Ponce is the first street east of Fallbrook. We can park on Ponce which is not in front of any houses.\nIF MEETING HERE\, LET ME KNOW\, OTHERWISE I WON’T BE STOPPING THERE.\nSEE MAP SITE BELOW\n[https://www.google.com/maps/place/34%C2%B010’04.0%22N+118%C2%B037’16.0%22W/@34.1677751\,-118.6216512\,228m/data=!3m2!1e3!4b1!4m6!3m5!1s0x0:0x0!7e2!8m2!3d34.1677741!4d-118.6211043](https://www.google.com/maps/place/34%C2%B010’04.0%22N+118%C2%B037’16.0%22W/@34.1677751\,-118.6216512\,228m/data=!3m2!1e3!4b1!4m6!3m5!1s0x0:0x0!7e2!8m2!3d34.1677741!4d-118.6211043)\nMEETUP LOCATION AND TIME: 7:30 am at the meetup location on Hwy. 2 in La Canada. SUMMARY:Sage Ranch Lollipop - Fit Beginner
DESCRIPTION:**3 miles. 560′ gain\, fit beginner**\nNote the time change. This park closes at sunset\, so we try to get out by then. For this reason\, on weekdays\, I only schedule this in the summer when sunset is late. \nFree parking is limited. Carpooling recommended. \nAs of June 10 2021\, the first part of the clockwise loop was closed\, but we found a new and cooler route with a perfect place for a snack-share\, complete with picnic table. \nWe’ll head up the ramp and begin the hike counter-clockwise. This ramp will be the only significant incline\, but is still suitable for fit beginners It is paved\, runs 1/4 mile\, and about 125′ of gain. \nAs we continue\, there will be a trail junction heading to the right and behind the rocks. For this hike\, we won’t follow it and go up on the rocks to a secret area where the rock has been carved out\, because the park closes at sunset. \nWe’ll continue on the main trail and follow it the rest of the way around. When we come to a sign that says “detour” because the path forward is closed\, we’ll take the detour. \nShortly after the detour starts\, there will be a picnic table to the right. We’ll stop there for a social event. Please bring snacks and drink to share. \nThis time of year\, there can be insects. Long pants and your preferred bug spray are recommended. \nIt is a steady climb up most of the way back\, but fit beginners can handle it. It will eventually lead us back to the top parking lot. From there\, we’ll take the asphalt path and down to our cars. \nNote that we have been scolded in the past by the ranger for being on the trail after dark here\, so we’ll try to get back to our cars by dark\, else get permission. \nThis takes us through Sage Ranch Park\, with interesting rock formations all around\, a very cool overlook onto the valley at the half way point\, and even an overlook onto part of the old Santa Suzanna nuclear test facility. \n**About the parking** \nThere are two spots to park. The first (where we will meet)\, is right at the entrance along the west edge of Black Canyon Rd. This is a free gravel lot\, but parking is limited to about 30 cars. \nIf the free lots gets filled\, continue about 500′ west up a steep incline\, where there is another lot with payment required via self-pay envelopes. If you plan on parking in this lot\, bring exact change from $5-15\, as I’m not sure of the cost. \nFirst\, we’ll walk up to the upper lot. You can wait up there if you don’t want to make the climb from the lower lot. \nThe park is officially open from sunrise to sunset. Prior postings for this hike\, had this warning: If you do park in the pay lot\, be sure you return before sunset\, else risk a ticket or being locked in by a ranger. \n**Interesting Notes** \n*[Black Sage](https://secure.meetupstatic.com/photos/event/d/9/6/c/highres_497695660.jpeg)* \nMultiple brown buttons going up the top of the stalk\, that may have white flowers. Green leaves. Purple or white flowers that are dark brown as they dry on the plant. Squish the leaves and smell. \nA rare and sought after Black sage honey is also made from the honey of bees that pollinate the Black sage plant. Black sage is utilized in the culinary world as an aromatic and flavorful herb. It can be used in recipes wherever traditional sage is called for\, however keep in mind that foraged Black sage has a much stronger flavor than that of traditional store bought sage. \nIts flavor marries well with winter squashes\, brown butter\, poultry\, venison\, pears\, cheese\, potatoes and other herbs such as rosemary and thyme. Use fresh in a variety of different preparations or leaves can be dried and stored for future use as a dried herb. Black sage was used traditionally by Native Americans known as the Chumash people to form an herbal soak for the bath to be used in the treatment of bodily pain\, specifically for the feet and lower legs. \n*[Yerba Santa](https://secure.meetupstatic.com/photos/event/d/9/6/f/highres_497695663.jpeg)*\nSaint Herb\, Holy Plant\, Mountain Balm. \nThe Spanish who came to early California were so impressed with the plant that they gave it the name Yerba Santa. \nLeaves were chewed to relieve dry mouth. Leaves were smoked or chewed to relieve asthma\, coughs\, colds\, headaches\, and stomachaches. Infusions of Yerba Santa leaves and flowers were used to treat fevers\, coughs\, colds\, stomachaches\, asthma\, rheumatism pleurisy\, chronic bronchitis\, tuberculosis\, and to purify the blood. Heated leaves were placed on the forehead to relieve headaches and other aches and sores. \nThe sticky leaves stay in place upon the skin. Mashed leaves were applied externally to sores\, cuts\, wounds\, insect bites\, and aching muscles. Mashed leaves were also used to reduce the swelling and relieve pain caused by bone fractures. The branches and leaves were burned in steam baths to treat rheumatism and hemorrhoids. Contains chemicals that are thought to loosen mucus in the chest and may increase urination. \n**[The Hike](https://secure.meetupstatic.com/photos/event/d/9/5/8/highres_497695640.jpeg)** \nDistance: 3 miles\nDuration: 3.5 hours\nElevation Gain: 560′\n[Difficulty](https://www.meetup.com/Hiking-Plus/messages/boards/thread/50879781): Fit Beginner\nPace: 2.0 mph\nDogs: Yes.\nRestrooms: Yes\, at the upper parking lot\, which we will be walking up to at the start of this hike.\nDrinking Fountains: Yes\, at the start\, but you have to walk down into the picnic area to get to it.\nParking: Free in the gravel lot\, $? to park up the incline at the top\, cash only.\nTrail: Fire Road and rocky trail\, good condition. \n**What to Bring:**\n1-2 liters of water.\n[Snacks and/or beverages to share]((https://www.meetup.com/Hiking-Plus/messages/boards/thread/50879772)\nHiking shoes preferred\, but athletic shoes will be OK.\nFlashlight or headlamp. SUMMARY:Top Of Topanga Loop
DESCRIPTION:Early posting\, need to be home by 3pm. The hike is waitlisted. Put yourself on the list and I will add you if I feel you can complete the hike at my pace safely \nDistance: 9\nElevation Gain: 2100\nRating: Intermediate/Advanced 7-10 \nTrail: Fire road\, single track\, class 1\,2 rock climbs and some street crossings. \nThe Hike\nExcellent variety\, views and exercise along this eight mile loop hike with an elevation gain of 2\,400′. The trail climbs and follows a ridge line through interesting rock formations to one of the best observation points in the Santa Monica Mountains; The Topanga Lookout. Topanga Lookout\, the former site of a fire tower\, stands above Red Rock Canyon Park and offers fine views of the Santa Monica Mountains\, Calabasas\, and the Santa Susana Mountains. \nAfter taking in the view and enjoying a break/early lunch\, we’ll follow the trail down to the shaded valley below and return to the parking area. \nDirections \nFrom the 405/101 Freeway… Exit Mulholland Dr /Valley Circle Blvd and go south on Mulholland Dr for 0.5 mi Turn Right on Valmar St for 1.2 mi Turn Right on Mulholland Hwy for 3.8 mi Left on Stunt Rd for 1.0 mi Park at turnout on Right \n*** \nThe Fine Print \nPLEASE – Know your limits and abilities. All participants take full responsibility for their own actions. If you choose to sign up for any Valencia Hiking Crew Meetup events\, you are releasing the Valencia Hiking Crew Meetup Group and it’s organizers from all liability in case of possible injuries as stated in paragraph 6.2 of the Meetup “Terms of Service” located on the bottom of the Meetup website. Your personal safety depends on your own judgment and experience.
