SUMMARY:Sage Ranch Lollipop - Fit Beginner
DESCRIPTION:Note the time change. This park closes at sunset\, so we try to get out by then. For this reason\, on weekdays\, I only schedule this in the summer when sunset is late. \nFree parking is limited. Carpooling recommended. \nAs of June 10 2021\, the first part of the clockwise loop was closed\, but we found a new and cooler route with a perfect place for a snack-share\, complete with picnic table. \nWe’ll head up the ramp and begin the hike counter-clockwise. This ramp will be the only significant incline\, but is still suitable for fit beginners It is paved\, runs 1/4 mile\, and about 125′ of gain. \nAs we continue\, there will be a trail junction heading to the right and behind the rocks. For this hike\, we won’t follow it and go up on the rocks to a secret area where the rock has been carved out\, because the park closes at sunset. \nWe’ll continue on the main trail and follow it the rest of the way around. When we come to a sign that says “detour” because the path forward is closed\, we’ll take the detour. \nShortly after the detour starts\, there will be a picnic table to the right. We’ll stop there for a social event. Please bring snacks and drink to share. \nThis time of year\, there can be insects. Long pants and your preferred bug spray are recommended. \nIt is a steady climb up most of the way back\, but fit beginners can handle it. It will eventually lead us back to the top parking lot. From there\, we’ll take the asphalt path and down to our cars. \nNote that we have been scolded in the past by the ranger for being on the trail after dark here\, so we’ll try to get back to our cars by dark. \nWe’ll stop whenever necessary to regroup. \nOther than what was mentioned earlier in this description\, all of the gain is distributed with no difficult or extended elevation climbs. This hike has all the look and feel you would expect of a mountain hike in this area. Most of the walk is a well maintained rocky trail. \nThis takes us through Sage Ranch Park\, with interesting rock formations all around\, a very cool overlook onto the valley at the half way point\, and even an overlook onto part of the old Santa Suzanna nuclear test facility. \nAbout the parking: \nThere are two spots to park. The first (where we will meet)\, is right at the entrance along the west edge of Black Canyon Rd. This is a free gravel lot\, but parking is limited to about 30 cars. \nIf the free lots gets filled\, continue about 500′ west up a steep incline\, where there is another lot with payment required via self-pay envelopes. In early 2018\, it was $5. If you plan on parking in this lot\, bring exact change. \nFor this hike\, we’ll walk up to this lot\, so you can wait there if you don’t want to make the climb from the lower lot to the upper lot. \nThe park is officially open from sunrise to sunset. Prior postings for this hike\, had this warning: If you do park in the pay lot\, be sure you return before sunset\, else risk a ticket or being locked in by a ranger. \nInteresting Notes: \nHere are a couple plants you are sure to see on this hike: \nBlack Sage \nMultiple brown buttons going up the top of the stalk\, that may have white flowers. Green leaves. Purple or white flowers that are dark brown as they dry on the plant. Squish the leaves and smell. \nA rare and sought after Black sage honey is also made from the honey of bees that pollinate the Black sage plant. Black sage is utilized in the culinary world as an aromatic and flavorful herb. It can be used in recipes wherever traditional sage is called for\, however keep in mind that foraged Black sage has a much stronger flavor than that of traditional store bought sage. \nIts flavor marries well with winter squashes\, brown butter\, poultry\, venison\, pears\, cheese\, potatoes and other herbs such as rosemary and thyme. Use fresh in a variety of different preparations or leaves can be dried and stored for future use as a dried herb. Black sage was used traditionally by Native Americans known as the Chumash people to form an herbal soak for the bath to be used in the treatment of bodily pain\, specifically for the feet and lower legs. \nYerba SantaSaint Herb\, Holy Plant\, Mountain Balm. \nThe Spanish who came to early California were so impressed with the plant that they gave it the name Yerba Santa. \nLeaves were chewed to relieve dry mouth. Leaves were smoked or chewed to relieve asthma\, coughs\, colds\, headaches\, and stomachaches. Infusions of Yerba Santa leaves and flowers were used to treat fevers\, coughs\, colds\, stomachaches\, asthma\, rheumatism pleurisy\, chronic bronchitis\, tuberculosis\, and to purify the blood. Heated leaves were placed on the forehead to relieve headaches and other aches and sores. \nThe sticky leaves stay in place upon the skin. Mashed leaves were applied externally to sores\, cuts\, wounds\, insect bites\, and aching muscles. Mashed leaves were also used to reduce the swelling and relieve pain caused by bone fractures. The branches and leaves were burned in steam baths to treat rheumatism and hemorrhoids. Contains chemicals that are thought to loosen mucus in the chest and may increase urination. \nThe Hike: \nDistance: 3 milesDuration: 3.5 hoursElevation Gain: 560′Difficulty (https://www.meetup.com/Hiking-Plus/messages/boards/thread/50879781): Fit BeginnerPace: 2.0 mphDogs: Yes.Restrooms: Yes\, at the upper parking lot\, which we will be walking up to at the start of this hike.Drinking Fountains: Yes\, at the start\, but you have to walk down into the picnic area to get to it.Parking: Free in the gravel lot\, $7 to park up the incline at the top\, cash only.Trail: Fire Road and rocky trail\, good condition. \nWhat to Bring:1-2 liters of water.Snacks and/or beverages to share (https://www.meetup.com/Hiking-Plus/messages/boards/thread/50879772).Hiking shoes preferred\, but athletic shoes will be OK.Flashlight or headlamp. SUMMARY:Camarillo parks walkabout
DESCRIPTION:BEFORE YOU WILL BE MOVED TO THE GOING LIST\, YOU WILL NEED TO UPDATE YOUR CDH PROFILE (The three questions must be answered with a “yes”) IF YOU HAVE NOT ALREADY DONE SO.NEED HELP:go to: https://wp.me/P9MbG4-hC \nWere continuing our series of easy Friday hikes for CDH’s beginners as we step it up each week in order to eventually do easy intermediate hikes. The goal is to help some of our members recovering from injuries to get back in shape as they join our slower and older CDH members on easy 3+ mile walks/hikes with very little elevation gain. Join me if you would like to be part of this. It’s also a great way to get started. \nThere are three parks in Camarillo (Mission Oaks Dog Park\, Mission Oaks Park and Heritage Park) and Mission Oaks Tree Walk that we can walkabout. There will be minimal sidewalk use linking up these parks with 90% of the hike in the parks. So\, here’s the chance to join our Monday hikes and not be overwhelmed on this one with speed\, distance and elevation gain. \nLOCATION AND TIME: We’ll all meet at The Heritage Park at 9:00 a.m. SEE LINK BELOW FOR EXACT LOCATION IN PARKhttps://www.google.com/maps/place/34%C2%B014’03.7%22N+118%C2%B059’00.7%22W/@34.2343641\,-118.9850756\,653m/data=!3m2!1e3!4b1!4m6!3m5!1s0x0:0x0!7e2!8m2!3d34.2343614!4d-118.983528 \nRESTROOMS: Yes \nDISTANCE: 3.5+ miles \nELEVATION GAIN: 200′ \nLEVEL: Beginner\, slow\, old and walking wounded \nTERRAIN: This event will have us walking on paved walkways and trails\, \nDOGS ALLOWED: YES\, but you must keep them on a leash and clean up after them. SUMMARY:Joshua Tree National Park: Hiking and Shooting the Milky Way
DESCRIPTION:Joshua Tree NP is a regular VHC destination. And I was able to reserve a group campsite good for 20 people with parking for 8 cars. But due to the threat of Covid-19\, I will be limiting attendance to just 10 people. \nFirst of all\, I have only done JTNP twice. So\, I do not plan to lead a hike because I have such a poor sense of direction. Honestly\, I’ve been lost many times while travelling outside of the country. And I consider it part of the fun. But not in JTNP. People die there when they get lost. So\, if you want to hike\, I will just follow. \nI reserved the campsite primarily because I want to shoot the Milky Way on August 7\, 2021 when illumination is at 0%. On that day\, there’s a 4:24-hr. window to shoot the galaxy\, from 21:24 to 1:48. I will be bringing very basic equipment: an old full frame camera (Canon 5D MKII with a 14mm F2.8 manual lens for landscape astrophotography)\, an old crop sensor camera (Canon 200D with a 135mm F2 manual lens for deep-sky astrophotography) and a star tracker. If interested\, you can join me. \nWhat: Astrophotography\, Bouldering\, Camping & Hiking \nWhen: Friday August 6th – Sunday August 8th (2 nights of camping) \nWhere: Joshua Tree NP (Indian Cove Campground); Campsite GO2 \nDay 1 Friday – Check-in at Indian Cove Campground anytime after 12 noon. \nDay 2 Saturday – Breakfast\, lunch on the trail\, then dinner back in the campground. \nDay 3 Sunday – Breakfast\, lunch on the trail\, dinner back in camp or head home. \nIndian Cove is not inside Joshua Tree NP proper. If you camped with VHC before\, there is no JT entrance fees. There are no entrance fees to get into this campground. Indian Cove\, while primitive\, is about as nice as you can get. Bathrooms are readily available and well maintained as are trash facilities. There is no potable water at the campground. The closest water is available at the usually unmanned visitors center when entering the campground. \nFires are okay so if you can contribute firewood that would be helpful. \nDirections \nFrom Los Angeles head towards Palm Springs via the 10 fwy. Stay on the 10\, not the 111\, and shortly after White Water take the 62 N towards Yucca Valley & Twenty Nine Palms. Read below. \nFrom the Antelope Valley you could head to the area via Apple Valley and the 18\, eventually connecting with the 247 in the Lucerne Valley area. Take the 247 to the 62 and go left. Read below. \nTo Joshua Tree NP \nOn the 62 the main entrance into Joshua Tree for this area is from Park Blvd. It could be another 20-30 minutes from the intersection of the 62 and Park Blvd until we reach any of the various hiking trails inside the park. \nTo Indian Cove \nContinue on the 62 well past Park Blvd. towards Twenty Nine Palms. Before entering Twenty Nine Palms you’ll turn right on Indian Cove Rd. This area is well signed. You will shortly be making a right turn to the group campsites and our sites are near the end at the turn around. For any last minute necessities there will be a Stater Bros. between Park and Indian Cove. The group sites are before the individual sites. \nGPSers can use 69087 29 Palms Hwy\, Twenty Nine Palms\, CA 92277. This is where Indian Cove Rd is. \n*********************************** \nPLEASE – Know your limits and abilities. Bring snacks and drink plenty of liquids when hiking. Check weather conditions and dress accordingly and be aware of your surroundings at all times. Watching out for poison oak\, snakes\, ticks\, uneven footing\, spectacular views\, beautiful fauna all while interacting with awesome (usually) fellow hikers can be extremely hazardous\, rewarding and fun. \nPLEASE – Hopefully\, by then all of us would have been vaccinated. But we will still strictly observe Covid-19 prevention measures. \nDISCLAIMER / RELEASE OF LIABILITY \nI am a volunteer (i.e. not liable for the group). Safety is a priority for everyone in the group. Think of this as hiking with a group of friends. \nOutdoor sports and other events we plan can be inherently dangerous and accidents may happen. By participating in any posted event\, you’re taking responsibility for your own safety and well-being. The VHC Meetup Group and its organizers are not trained leaders and we do not confirm the qualifications of any of its members to lead or participate in trips. All participants take full responsibility for their own actions. If you choose to sign up for any VHC Meetup events\, you are releasing the VHC Meetup Group and it’s organizers from all liability in case of possible injuries as stated in paragraph 6.2 of the Meetup “Terms of Service” located on the bottom of the Meetup website. Your personal safety depends on your own judgment and experience.

SUMMARY:V.I.P. - San Nicholas Canyon - Lunch at Spruzzo
DESCRIPTION:[vc_row][vc_column][vc_btn title=”RSVP” color=”danger” i_type=”entypo” i_icon_entypo=”entypo-icon entypo-icon-down-circled” add_icon=”true” link=”url:%23RSVP”][/vc_column][/vc_row][vc_row][vc_column][vc_column_text] \nDetails\nI cannot make this hike public for a couple of reasons. First\, we’ll be taking a secret passage into the forbidden zone of San Nicholas Canyon and explore some old trails. SUMMARY:Caballero Canyon to Eagle Rock in Topanga State Park
DESCRIPTION:Join me at Caballero Canyon to Eagle Rock in Topanga State Park! \nThis is a great mid-range hike for folks who want some good exercise and at the same time enjoy the local beauty offered in the Santa Monica Mountains. \nJoin us for a moderate to strenuous 9 to 10 mile roundtrip (semi- loop) hike that begins at the Caballero Canyon Trailhead in Tarzana. \nAfter climbing to dirt Mullholland we’ll turn toward the Temescal Fireroad. It’s a gentle uphill two miles past open grasslands\, chaparral slopes and live oaks. There are views of red sandstone rocks. We’ll hike this until we reach the Hub Connector and then head west to Eagle Rock. We’ll sit on Eagle Rock and snack while we take in the views. \nAfter enjoying our rest\, we’ll hike back to Mulholland via the Garapito and Bent Arrow Trails. Sorry\, but no dogs are allowed on this hike as we will be in a state park most of the time. \nHiking Difficulty:Moderate to strenuous for distance \nBring water\, snacks\, hat and sturdy sneakers or hiking shoes. \nIf you want to read more about this area click on the link below and preview this book. Go to page 65 and read about San Fernando Valley to the Sea. Our hike is the beginning part of this same one. It’s going all the way to Will Rogers State Park. We’ll do that one next time. http://books.google.com/books?id=KWfrmJ1DzPQC&pg=PT80&lpg=PT80&dq=caballero+canyon+to+mulholland \nHike Duration: I estimate that the hike will take at most 5 hours. We should be back to the cars by around 12:30. \nDirections to the Caballero Canyon Trailhead: Meet at the Caballero Canyon trailhead on Reseda Bl. From the 101 Freeway\, exit at Reseda Blvd and turn south. Drive for about 2.2 miles. There is parking on both sides of the street; the trailhead is on the east side of Reseda Blvd. across the street from Braemar Country club. The trailhead is clearly marked with a big sign. Parking on street is OK. Parking is free. \nFrom the EAST: Take the 101 Freeway West/North toward Ventura. Exit at Reseda Blvd. Turn LEFT (toward “Tarzana”) onto Reseda\, go under the freeway bridge\, cross Burbank and Ventura Boulevards. Continue on Reseda uphill for approximately 2.2 miles. \nFrom the WEST: Take the 101 Freeway South/East toward Los Angeles. Exit at Reseda Boulevard. Turn RIGHT (toward “Tarzana”) onto Reseda\, cross Burbank and Ventura Boulevards. Continue on Reseda for approximately 2.2 miles \n________________________________________________________________________ \nI am a volunteer (i.e. not liable for the group). It’s called Sturgeon Moon because of the great number of this huge freshwater fish that could once be found in lakes and rivers in North America. \nOur goal will be to reach Inspiration Point\, a flat-topped bump on a ridge overlooking the entire Will Rogers spread with fantastic views of Santa Monica Bay\, Century City\, the Wilshire corridor — and all the way to downtown L.A. \nAt appx 3 miles with about 400 feet total ascent\, this hike is rated EASY See the hike rating guide here: https://www.hikingwithdean.com/hike-rating-guide/ \n \n🍺🍹 Don’t forget to bring something cold to drink and snacks to share on Inspiration Point \nPhotos from a previous hike there: https://www.meetup.com/localhikers/photos/27919243/461764114/ \n \n \nSunset: 7:32 pm\nMoonrise: 8:11 pm \nDirections \n**Do not park in the Will Rogers SP parking lot!** \nTake Sunset Boulevard to Will Rogers State Park Road\, located 4.5 miles west of the 405 and three miles east of PCH. At the light\, turn north on Will Rogers State Park Road. Drive 1/2 mile to Villa View Dr and park on street. If there is no parking on Will Rogers Rd park on Villa View or the next side street. \nWalk into park\, past parking kiosk. We’ll meet near the restrooms

SUMMARY:🥂🎂Birthday & 👴Retirement Hike - Lunch at Malibu Seafood
DESCRIPTION:My 65th birthday and retirement day is coming up\, and I can’t wait to celebrate with my hiking buddies at one of our favorite hiking and post-hike lunching spots. \nI am planning a hike in Corral Canyon with lunch at Malibu Seafood and you are cordially invited. SO SAVE THE DATE! \nThe great thing about Malibu Seafood — besides the food and beach views — is they allow you to bring your own beverages (including alcohol) and they are located at the trailhead so no driving required. Leave your beverages in the car until you return from hike. \nI’ll be arranging two hikes: one easy and one medium. Stay tuned for details. \nFree street parking is available

SUMMARY:Sunday hike
DESCRIPTION:The Keyhole 7 memorial bench was installed in April 2016 as a tribute to our friends we lost in Zion in September 2015. It survived the fire that swept through the area in May earlier this year. Let’s pay it a visit in remembrance of those we lost. \nWe will be taking the Garapito Trail to Eagle Rock and come back via the fire road but you could come either way if you know the area. We’ll be taking a break at Eagle Rock so bring snacks or lunch. \nSTATS \nDistance: 9 miles \nRating: 5/10 \nElevation gain: 1750 \nDon’s write up \nEagle Rock\, located in Topanga SP\, is the primary attraction of this hike. It juts impressively out from the hillside\, with dramatic shear cliffs on three sides. There is easy access to the top of Eagle Rock from the trail. The usual route to Eagle Rock is via Topanga SP\, but that would be too short for our group as we’re a bit more adventurous. This hike starts from the Marvin Braude Mulholland Gateway Park at the south end of Reseda Blvd. This will be a combination of trails and fire roads. We start off with .05 miles of fire roads and then take the Bent Arrow Trail to the Garapito Trail the remaining 3 miles to Eagle Rock where we’ll take a short break before returning on fire roads to our cars on Reseda. The Garapito Trail is where we get our bonus ab workout due to the necessity to avoid so many low branches. As usual bring ample supplies of liquid refreshment\, snacks\, sunscreen and dress accordingly depending on the weather conditions. Unfortunately dogs are not allowed in state parks. \nDirections: Marvin Braude Mulholland Gateway Park is located on the southern end of Reseda Blvd. in Tarzana\, 3.2 miles south of the Ventura Fwy. The park and parking are at the end of Reseda Blvd. There is a white line across the road to mark where the fee parking starts and an “Iron Ranger” to pay the fee. Park before the line for free. Be aware as there is a “photo-enforced” stop sign in the area. \n************************** \nPLEASE – Know your limits and abilities. \nThe Farzan Rule: Posted hike times are the time the hike starts or we leave from a posted shuttle location. I’m aware other Meetup groups offer a grace period for late arrivals; we don’t. It’s your responsibility to know the location of the meeting spot and be there and ready to participate at the posted time. If you have any concerns about the directions feel free to contact the organizer of the event\, preferably in advance of the event and not at the start time. I’m of the opinion that it’s not fair to delay an event when the majority of attendees have arrived on-time. (so named after a conversation I had with a certain un-named member) \nRSVP’s: If you RSVP for an event be responsible and update your RSVP if your plans change. If your plans change at the last second and you’re not able to update your RSVP also let us know. In my opinion a no-show is someone who has no regard for following the guidelines we request from our members and will risk being removed from future events that have a limit. \nVHC HIKE RATING SCALE \n1 – A long walk \n2 – 4 mile hike w/little elevation gain \n3 – 5 mile hike w/up to 1000 ft. elevation gain \n4 – 5+ mile hike w/up to 1500 ft. elevation gain (heart rate increases at times) \n5 – 7+ mile hike w/over 1500 ft. elevation gain (heart rate increasing even more at times) \n6 – 7+ mile hike w/over 2000 ft. elevation gain (at times you might be trying to remember how to perform CPR) \n7 – 5+ mile hike w/over 2000 ft. elevation gain (at times you might be muttering expletives to yourself) \n8 – 10+ mile hike w/over 3500 ft. elevation gain (at times you might be angry with the hike leader) \n9 – 10+ mile hike w/over 5000 ft. elevation gain (at times you might be thinking of reporting the hike leader to the authorities) \n10 – Use your imagination \nClass 3 Scrambling: Scrambling or un-roped climbing. You must use your hands at times to hold the terrain or find your route. This may be caused by a combination of boulders\, steepness and extreme terrain. Some Class 3 routes have ropes in place for assistance. \nDISCLAIMER / RELEASE OF LIABILITY \nIMPORTANT\, PLEASE READ BELOW IN ITS ENTIRETY: \nI am a volunteer (i.e. not liable for the group). Safety is a priority for everyone in the group. Think of this as hiking with a group of friends. \nOutdoor sports and other events we plan can be inherently dangerous and accidents may happen. SUMMARY:Los Padres - Hike with Potluck Picnic stop
DESCRIPTION:3.5 miles\, 600′ gain\, Easy Intermediate. \nA fit beginner can handle this. This is rated Easy Intermediate (easy end of the intermediate spectrum) because there are a couple extended inclines. This is a social hike\, not a conditioning hike. \nWe’ll start by entering the Los Padres trail\, through a spooky oak covered section\, then move through until we come to a dead end. We’ll turn right\, and climb up to another junction\, where we’ll turn right onto the Los Robles trail. \nAfter 500 feet\, we’ll take a split off to the right and continue along the Vista Loop until we come to a bench at the top. Then we’ll start heading down\, and when we come to a picnic table\, we’ll stop for a social event. Let’s call it the “Giant’s Picnic Table” because of the thick pieces of wood used. \nThis is a pot luck picnic. Please also bring something to eat and drink\, and a little extra to share. If your item requires it\, bring plates and utensils to share. \nWe’ll share snacks and drinks (https://www.meetup.com/Hiking-Plus/messages/boards/thread/50879772) for 30-60 minutes\, before continuing down and around for our return. \nIf you don’t wish to stay for the entire social event\, please study the map posted with description so you are able to navigate the remainder of this trail without the host \nHike Distance: 3.5 milesGain: 600′Distribution: Most of the incline well distributed in the first half.Difficulty (https://www.meetup.com/Hiking-Plus/messages/boards/thread/50879781): Easy Intermediate.Shape: Loop.Pace: approx. 2.0 mph.Trail Type: Fire Road\, Single-Track\, and Double-Track.Trail Variations:Several extended inclines of 1000 steps.Several steep sections of 300 steps\, but no hands required.Duration: 3.0 hoursDogs: Yes.Restrooms: NoDrinking Fountains: No.Parking: Free along street. \nWhat to bring: 1 liter of water for every 3 miles.Hiking shoes/bootsFlashlight or headlamp.Sunscreen and/or hat as needed.Snacks and/or beverages to share. \nHosting \nRoute: The host knows the route. A pic of the route has been posted as part of this description. \nNavigation: Host memory\, enhanced by GPS navigation as needed \nHike type: Social. We won’t be hiking at a fast pace because this is a social hike\, not a conditioning hike. There is nothing wrong with stopping\, even if it means every 50 steps. \nStops:The host may designate stopping points to let others catch up. We will stop at junctions to make sure everybody makes any turns or chooses the correct direction at splits\, else something will be used to mark the direction\, usually a large arrow made of baking soda. There may not always be a sweeper designated to be the last hiker. \nEach hiker is responsible for knowing their capability\, only attending events where they are able to sustain the described pace\, for keeping up with the group sufficiently enough to make the turns and not get left behind\, and for making sure the host is notified if they are going to split from the group. \nGroup separation: Sometimes hikers wish to move significantly ahead and not wait at designated stopping points. Please let the host know. They are on their own regarding route and navigation. \nInteresting Notes \nThese are a couple plants you are likely to see on this hike: \nYucca \nWhite flowers on stalk. Stalk is often missing\, leaving only the spires from which it grows. Stalks are very strong and light\, so they make good walking sticks. Needles on end of spires. Chopped up root can be uses as shampoo or soap. Roasted root can be eaten like a potato. Illegal to remove live stick in CA. \nPronounced with short u. Dried leaves make good tinder. To eat root\, remove skin and core\, boil 15 minutes. Then fry or bake. Flowers are mildly sweet. Adam says they taste like radishes. The fruit is also edible\, but bitter if not ripe. To access fibers: Soak for a month in water\, lightly pound leaves with rock or club\, or scrape off skin. Roll between hands\, then pull and separate fibers. Weave into cordage. \nWild Cucumber \nToxic. Boil fruit in water to make spikes easy to remove. Inside is a natural luffa. Tubars (thickened part of a stem\, usually underground\, like the potato) can be crushed and thrown into water to immobilize fish. \nAlmost the entire plant is poisonous. Although wild cucumbers are related to the familiar\, domestic vegetable\, the prickly “cucumbers” consist not of fleshy fruit\, but of two seed chambers containing lacy netting. \nDirections \nLos Padres Trailhead15 Los Padres Dr.Thousand Oaks\, CA\, 91361 \nFrom I-101:West of CA-23\, I-101\, exit S. Moorpark Rd.South on Moorpark Rd. north for 1000 ft.Left on Los Padres Dr.After 200 ft\, trailhead on the right.Park on the street. \nRelease of Liability: https://www.meetup.com/Hiking-Plus/pages/29622459/Is_Hiking_Dangerous/

SUMMARY:Sudden-Cross Town Trail to Teepee
DESCRIPTION:Hiking to the teepee in honor of our Keyhole friends. Join me if you can\, I know its sudden and weather is still warm but hoping it will be cooler at 6:30pm. It’s the perfect place to enjoy the sunset and look at the city lights. \nThere are sections of the trail that are very steep and slippery so poles would be helpful. Bring a headlamp as well. I will mark the trail for those who can’t make the start time or who want to go up at their own pace. This is a residential neighborhood so please be mindful of noise. \nStats \nDistance: <4 Miles \nElevation Gain: ~1300 ft. \nDuration: 3+ hours \nTrail: Fire road and single track\, some areas are very steep and slippery. \nRating: 5-6/10 \nWrite-up is Don’s: \nThe Story \nBoth the ascent and descent are fire roads/breaks or single uneven trails. The views are enjoyable at night. There are also a few interesting landmarks up there\, such as a TeePee. \nDirections: \nFrom the 210 Freeway exit Angeles Crest Hwy (2) North as if you were going to Mt. Wilson. Shortly after the first curve will be Harter Lane. Turn Left here and go as far as you can on Harter. \n*********************************************** \nThe Fine Print \nPLEASE – Know your limits and abilities. \nVHC HIKE RATING SCALE \nRating a hike is subjective\, meaning the difficulty of a hike will be in direct relation to how often you hike and the type of hike you prefer. Keep in mind that any hike can have the following: un-even hiking surfaces\, various obstructions\, water and/or water crossings or bouldering and/or rock hopping. A great hike will have all of these! \n1 – A long walk \n2 – 4 mile hike w/little elevation gain \n3 – 5 mile hike w/up to 1000 ft. elevation gain \n4 – 5+ mile hike w/up to 1500 ft. elevation gain (heart rate increases at times) \n5 – 7+ mile hike w/over 1500 ft. elevation gain (heart rate increasing even more at times) \n6 – 7+ mile hike w/over 2000 ft. elevation gain (at times you might be trying to remember how to perform CPR) \n7 – 5+ mile hike w/over 2000 ft. elevation gain (at times you might be muttering expletives to yourself) \n8 – 10+ mile hike w/over 3500 ft. elevation gain (at times you might be angry with the hike leader) \n9 – 10+ mile hike w/over 5000 ft. elevation gain (at times you might be thinking of reporting the hike leader to the authorities) \n10 – Use your imagination \nClass 3 Scrambling: Scrambling or un-roped climbing. By participating in any posted event\, you’re taking responsibility for your own safety and well-being. The Valencia Hiking Crew Meetup Group and its organizers are not trained leaders and we do not confirm the qualifications of any of its members to lead or participate in trips. All participants take full responsibility for their own actions. If you choose to sign up for any Valencia Hiking Crew Meetup events\, you are releasing the Valencia Hiking Crew Meetup Group and it’s organizers from all liability in case of possible injuries as stated in paragraph 6.2 of the Meetup “Terms of Service” located on the bottom of the Meetup website. Your personal safety depends on your own judgment and experience.

SUMMARY:LAKE ELEANOR'S LOOP TREK (THE CAVE AND SENTINEL) - a rock scrambling adventure
DESCRIPTION:BEFORE YOU WILL BE MOVED TO THE GOING LIST\, YOU WILL NEED TO UPDATE YOUR CDH PROFILE (The three questions must be answered with a “yes”) IF YOU HAVE NOT ALREADY DONE SO.NEED HELP:go to: https://wp.me/P9MbG4-hC \nA LOCAL\, BUT CHALLENGING TREK \nSHERWOOD’S SENTINEL – Stands guard over Lake Sherwood and Lake Eleanor with views of The Las Virgenes and Westlake Reservoirs as well \nTHE CAVE – We’ll be stopping off at the largest cave in the Santa Monica Mountains \nIf you’re looking for more of a challenge than what ordinary trails offer\, then join me as I once again lead you on a 4+ mile trek of pure excitement and adventure (horror for some of you) which will loop through the entire Lake Eleanor open space. In doing this loop\, we will be walking along roads for 1/2 of a mile\, hiking 3/4 mile on a trail\, trekking along 2+ miles of “use” trails\, going down a very steep old fire break over 1/4 mile\, and doing some challenging sections of class 3 rock climbing with a sheer drop-off/exposure. When we’re done\, you’ll have had your hiking fix satisfied many times over. Besides the variety of traversing different sections this loop offers\, you’ll also be rewarded by an awesome and provocative view of Lake Sherwood from one of its sentinels as well as views of Lake Eleanor\, Westlake and The Las Virgenes Reservoirs. The trek starts off extremely easy and gradually pumps up as we progress\, becoming quite frightening at times as we finish this loop maneuver on the Sentinel of Sherwood via a route to the cave as well. \nCheck out our photos from a previous trip there. It’ll give you an idea what you’re in for.https://www.meetup.com/calabasasdayhikers/photos/30808711/489545270/ \nMEET UP LOCATION: Take Westlake Blvd. exit off the 101 Fwy. in Westlake Village and head south 1.5 miles and turn right on Potrero Rd. Drive 400 yards and turn right on Camberwell Pl. Immediately turn right and park on Margate Pl. per Google Map. The street signs say Potrero Rd. instead of Margate Pl. (Very confusing) \nMEETUP TIME: No later than 8:00 a.m. \nDURATION AND OBJECTIVE: Four plus hours or what ever it takes to accomplish THE TASK (Time\, Energy\, Fear\, Pain\, Blood\, Sweat\, Tears etc.). \nDISTANCE COVERED: 4+ miles – grueling at times \nEXPERIENCE LEVEL: INTERMEDIATE HIKER with rock scrambling skills \nPACE: A fun and comfortable pace for adventurous Trekkers. \nELEVATION GAIN: 1000′ + \nTERRAIN: Easy to rugged and extremely steep with sections of class 3 rock scrambling \nSUGGESTIONS: Bring gloves\, trekking poles\, micro spikes and protective clothing \nMY CELL # IS 805-358-5972

X-APPLE-STRUCTURED-LOCATION;VALUE=URI;X-ADDRESS=DESCRIPTION:BEFORE YOU WILL BE MOVED TO THE GOING LIST YOU WILL NEED TO UPDATE YOUR CDH PROFILE (The three questions must be answered with a “yes”) IF YOU HAVE NOT ALREADY DONE SO.NEED HELP:go to: https://wp.me/P9MbG4-hC \nA LOCAL BUT CHALLENGING TREK \nSHERWOOD’S SENTINEL – Stands guard over Lake Sherwood and Lake Eleanor with views of The Las Virgenes and Westlake Reservoirs as well \nTHE CAVE – We’ll be stopping off at the largest cave in the Santa Monica Mountains \nIf you’re looking for more of a challenge than what ordinary trails offer then join me as I once again lead you on a 4+ mile trek of pure excitement and adventure (horror for some of you) which will loop through the entire Lake Eleanor open space. In doing this loop we will be walking along roads for 1/2 of a mile hiking 3/4 mile on a trail trekking along 2+ miles of “use” trails going down a very steep old fire break over 1/4 mile and doing some challenging sections of class 3 rock climbing with a sheer drop-off/exposure. When we’re done you’ll have had your hiking fix satisfied many times over. Besides the variety of traversing different sections this loop offers you’ll also be rewarded by an awesome and provocative view of Lake Sherwood from one of its sentinels as well as views of Lake Eleanor Westlake and The Las Virgenes Reservoirs. The trek starts off extremely easy and gradually pumps up as we progress becoming quite frightening at times as we finish this loop maneuver on the Sentinel of Sherwood via a route to the cave as well. \nCheck out our photos from a previous trip there. It’ll give you an idea what you’re in for.https://www.meetup.com/calabasasdayhikers/photos/30808711/489545270/ \nMEET UP Take Westlake Blvd. exit off the 101 Fwy. in Westlake Village and head south 1.5 miles and turn right on Potrero Rd. Drive 400 yards and turn right on Camberwell Pl. Immediately turn right and park on Margate Pl. per Google Map. The street signs say Potrero Rd. instead of Margate Pl. (Very confusing) \nMEETUP TIME: No later than 8:00 a.m. \nDURATION AND OBJECTIVE: Four plus hours or what ever it takes to accomplish THE TASK (Time Energy Fear Pain Blood Sweat Tears etc.). \nDISTANCE COVERED: 4+ miles – grueling at times \nEXPERIENCE LEVEL: INTERMEDIATE HIKER with rock scrambling skills \nPACE: A fun and comfortable pace for adventurous Trekkers. \nELEVATION GAIN: 1000′ + \nTERRAIN: Easy to rugged and extremely steep with sections of class 3 rock scrambling \nSUGGESTIONS: Bring gloves trekking poles micro spikes and protective clothing \nMY CELL # IS 805-358-5972;X-APPLE-RADIUS=500;X-TITLE=CAMBERWELL AND MARGATE PLACE:geo:-118.852946,34.143454

SUMMARY:Ridge Route to Parker Mesa Overlook - Los Liones Loop - Reel Inn
DESCRIPTION:Perched high above the Palisades and Malibu\, the vista from the Parker Mesa Overlook is stunning. You can see all of the LA basin laid out before you\, the San Gabriel Mountains to the north\, Catalina Island to the south\, and the crescent shaped coastline of Santa Monica to the east. \nWe’ll have a post-hike lunch at the Reel Inn. Read on… \nThis isn’t your usual Parker Mesa Hike! Our ridge route starts near the Los Liones Canyon trailhead and makes a bee-line up a ridge to the Overlook with a 1400 ft gain in a mere 1.5 miles. Some parts are steep and loose. You’ve been warned! \nCheck out my Top 10 trekking poles. Order one or two today! https://www.hikingwithdean.com/shop/amazon-top-10/ \n \nAt the top\, on the Parker Mesa Overlook\, there are a couple of benches where we can enjoy one of the most spectacular views of the Los Angeles coastline and a snack. We’ll take an extended break here to allow everyone to catch up \n \nWe will return via the hilly side trails of E Topanga Fireroad\, and the beautiful Los Liones Canyon \n \nThe Los Liones Trail weaves through a lush canyon just a mile from the Pacific Ocean. Slivers of big blue sea can be seen from much of the ivy and chaparral-lined canyon \n***The No Fireroad rule will be in effect!*** \nThis strenuous hike is rated DIFFICULT. Its a relatively short 5-mile loop\, but packs a wallop with about 2100 feet of total ascent. See https://www.hikingwithdean.com/hike-rating-guide/ \nPost hike lunch will be at the Reel Inn on PCH and Topanga \nDirections \nFrom Santa Monica or Malibu: Take the Pacific Coast Highway and turn on Sunset Boulevard. Go 0.3 miles on Sunset\, take a left on Los Liones and drive half a mile to the end of the street. Park on the right side of the street in the lot across from the church. \nThere is plenty of free street parking\, as well as two lots near picnic areas and restrooms. Hike starts at 9am\, not the parking.
