SUMMARY:Trailer Canyon to Green Peak - a Loop Hike
DESCRIPTION:THIS HIKE REPLACES THE SULLIVAN CANYON HIKE \nOur route begins on Trailer Canyon fire road providing broad views over Santa Ynez Canyon and the surrounding mountains. But like nature and vacuums\, we abhor fire roads. Thus\, shortly after the hike begins we will leave the fireroad and take a small\, slightly overgrown use trail that passes a clay gully and crosses a lush ridge up to the Temescal Ridge trail. We’ll return along the fire road making a loop in the canyon. \nAlong the way don’t forget to check out an old quarry marked by a single out of place palm tree juxtaposed against the indigenous chaparral. \nWe’ll soon meet up with Temescal Ridge trail and head over and up to Green Peak \nHike is 4.5 miles with 1\,000 feet total ascent and is rated MEDIUM+ due to terrain. See the HWD Hike Rating Guide \nDirections: \nFrom Sunset Boulevard\, half a mile east of PCH\, turn north on Palisades Drive and continue for 2.9 mi until you get to Palisades Ct. Turn left here then left again on Michael Ln. Trailhead is 0.2 mi on right — across the street form given address. Park on Michael Lane.

SUMMARY:Sullivan - Mandeville Loop
DESCRIPTION:The shady hike down Sullivan Canyon parallels a seasonal creek. Alive with the singing of birds\, this hike sounds and feels like an aviary housed within huge stands of sycamore\, oak\, and willow trees. We’ll be hiking on both the Sullivan side and the Mandeville Canyon side of the ridge dividing the two canyons creating a loop. \nThe hike will include a short but steep ascent and an equally steep descent on Mandeville Ridge — trekking poles are recommended. I don’t expect any bushwhacking. \nHike is 7 miles and rated MEDIUM+ due to terrain. See the HWD Hike Rating Guide \nDirections\nFrom Sunset Boulevard\, 2.3 miles west of the 405\, turn north onto Mandeville Canyon Road. After a third of a mile\, turn left onto Westridge Road. Drive up Westridge Road for 1.2 miles and turn left on Bayliss Road. Drive two blocks and make another left on Queensferry Road and find a place to legally park. \nThere is not much parking on Queensferry so be prepared to park on Bayliss \nWe’ll meet at the big green gate at end of Queensferry Rd

SUMMARY:Hike at Caspers Wilderness Park - Bell Canyon + Oso Trail
DESCRIPTION:Let’s start early and beat the heat! \nThe hike I am planning is around 6.3 miles with about 700 ft. of elevation gain. It starts at the very end of the paved road\, the long gray strip that can be seen on the map. \nWe will begin at the Bell Canyon Trail head. We will continue onto that and then take it to the Cougar Pass trail. We will go up that and make a left on Oso Trail. Once that ends\, we will come back down Bell Canyon Trail until we hit Star Ridge Trail. We will take this to West Ridge Trail and go left. This will take us to a single track trail\, Dick Loskorn Trail. This hits Nature Loops Trail and this will take us back to the beginning. \nThis is a beautiful hike with expansive views. SUMMARY:Almost-Full-Moon hike Angel Vista - Easy Intermediate
DESCRIPTION:3.0 miles\, 800′ gain\, easy-intermediate. \nLet’s enjoy the gorgeous sunset and the almost full moon\, and fun loaded potluck picnic at the beautiful Angel Vista! \nThis hike is rated easy-intermediate because it is a continuous incline for 1.5 miles. This isn’t real steep\, but it is continuous\, and many beginner hikers have indicated this should be rated intermediate. \nThat said\, there is no reason a fit beginner cannot complete this hike. If needed\, just stop and rest along the way\, even if it’s every 50 steps. This is not a conditioning hike\, it is a social hike\, and you really can’t get lost. \nThe only junction is 200 yards before the top\, where we’ll turn right to complete the climb. \nAt the top\, there is a picnic table and 360 degree incredible views that are especially wonderful at night. We’ll have a snack-share social event at the top for 30-60 minutes before heading back the way we came. Please bring some food and drink to share\, and utensils of your item requires it. \nThe top has been known to sometimes be very cool and windy. Please bring something to put on in case it is that way at the top. \nInteresting Notes \nTree Tobacco \nThe Cahuilla Indians used the leaves interchangeably with other tobacco species in hunting rituals and as a poultice to treat swellings\, bruises\, cuts\, wounds\, boils\, sores\, inflamed throat\, and swollen glands. It does not contain nicotine. \nIt contains anabasine\, a similar compound\, which is highly toxic to humans and animals. It is more toxic than nicotine. Ingestion of the leaves can be fatal. It is being investigated for use as a biofuel. All parts of this plant are toxic. Used as an insecticide. Do not smoke. \nElderberry \nThe blue or purple berries are gathered and made into elderberry wine\, jam\, syrup\, and pies. The entire flower cluster can be dipped in batter and fried while petals can be eaten raw or made into a fragrant and tasty tea. Spit out the seeds. Elderflower water is also used in perfumes and sweets. \nMost agree that they do need to be cooked if you are going to eat more than just a few out of hand. That’s because they have a small amount of cyanide producing glycosides\, which are released upon digestion. Fully ripe black berries are not toxic and you can eat as many as you like.
