SUMMARY:Carpinteria Bluffs Trail & Nature Preserve - Gentler Intermediate
DESCRIPTION:To beat this insane heat\, let’s explore Carpinteria Bluffs Nature Preserve to Carpinteria State Beach\, passing through Tar Pits Park and Seal Sanctuary Overlook!\nI pre-hiked today. Yes\, it was cool as it was 67F when I was left there around 11am. \nThis beautiful\, beachside green space is one of the last undeveloped strips of land in Carpinteria that go along the ocean and offers outdoor recreational activities like hiking\, walking\, or biking on dirt trails and/or sand and more. \nCarpinteria Bluffs is also a popular viewing area for Pacific Harbor seals that often lounge on the beach. Occasionally visitors can even spot migrating grey whales and dolphins.\nhttps://californiawanderland.com/carpinteria-bluffs-tar-pits-park/ \nThis is a 4-5 mile hike with an elevation gain/loss of about 300-400’. \nDirection: Take the 101 Freeway to exit 85 for Bailard Avenue. At the end of the offramp\, turn left toward the coast on Bailard Avenue. Drive straight across the intersection of Carpinteria Avenue into a dirt parking area in Carpinteria Bluffs Nature Preserve. \nPlease review the guidelines (guidelines) to join our hikes.
Restrictions apply for your safety and ours:
• Don’t show up unless you’re shown on the “Attending” list.
• Plan on KEEPING UP with the group and completing the entire hike at a moderate pace\, or please find an alternative hike that better suits your hiking level.
• No “Plus Ones” or dogs on Weekday Trailblazer hikes.
DISCLAIMER/RELEASE OF LIABILITY – PLEASE READ IN ITS ENTIRETY
The hike host is a volunteer and not responsible for the group. Safety should be a priority for everyone in the group. Please treat this meet-up as hiking with a group of friends. If you become fatigued and unable to continue the hike\, it is expected you will advise the hike host of this and return to our starting point on your own. If you are able to proceed\, it is expected that you will maintain line of sight with other members of the group at all times and help to promote the group’s safety and fitness goals.
Outdoor sports and other events we plan can be inherently dangerous and accidents may happen. By participating in any posted event\, you are taking responsibility for your own safety and well-being. The Weekday Trailblazers Meetup Group and its organizers are not trained leaders and we do not confirm the qualifications of any of its members to lead or participate in trips. All participants take full responsibility for their own actions.
If you choose to sign up for this or any Weekday Trailblazers Meetup event\, you are releasing the Weekday Trailblazers Meetup Group and its organizers from all liability in case of possible injuries. Your personal safety depends on your own judgment and experience.
All participants must be 18 or older\, or accompanied by a parent or legal guardian.

SUMMARY:Intermediate 8-9 miles Ray Miller Trail and Overlook Trail in Malibu
DESCRIPTION:Join us on an out and back hike up the Ray Miller Trail and the Overlook Trail. We’ll turn back around the Guadalasca Trail intersection. We’ll enjoy beautiful ocean views as we descend. We’ll pick up about 1500’ gain on this 8-9 mile adventure. IF it gets too hot we will have the option to shorten the hike. \nLying along the brilliant blue Pacific Ocean at the west end of Malibu (just shy of Port Hueneme)\, the swelling blue ocean is rivaled in beauty by the undulating native California grasslands. On a clear day\, the Channel Islands are easily within sight. \nMost of the trail is exposed\, so sunscreen is highly recommended and plenty of water. It is mosquito season so it’s up to you whether you should bring bug repellent. \nWe’ll meet in the parking lot near the Ray Miller Trailhead (look for the brilliant yellow sign). There is a parking fee in the lot (or free with state parking pass). There is free parking on PCH just a short walk to the parking area. \nhttps://a248.e.akamai.net/secure.meetupstatic.com/photos/event/6/7/4/a/event_93326442.jpeg \nPlease review the ongoing guidelines to participate in our morning hikes. Here are some highlights and a link to the guidelines:\nhttps://www.meetup.com/The-Weekday-Trailblazers/about/\nRestrictions apply for your safety and ours:\nDon’t show up unless you’re on the “Attending” list\nNo “Plus Ones” on this hike\nNo dogs on this hike\nPlan on completing the entire hike with the group\, or please find an alternative hike that better suits your hiking level. \nDirections: \nFrom Los Angeles\, take the Pacific Coast Highway (PCH) north\, 22 miles from Malibu Canyon Rd. Across the street from Thornhill Broome Beach is the entrance to La Jolla Canyon. It is very clearly marked. Turn right. \nFrom Ventura\, take PCH eastward\, and turn left 4 miles after Las Posas Road. \nDo NOT leave anything of value in your car\, at this or any other trailhead. \nDISCLAIMER / RELEASE OF LIABILITY \nThe hike host is a volunteer and not responsible for the group. Safety should be a priority for everyone in the group. Please treat this meet-up as hiking with a group of friends. SUMMARY:Point Dume to Paradise Cove - and back! Gentler
DESCRIPTION:This is a cooler\, gentler hike along the surf during a hot\, hot week! \nThe Point Dume staircase has been restored and improved\, so we’ll park at Westward\, climb up and over the bluff to the top of the stairs\, make our way gingerly around the cliff\, then down the stairs to the beach. On Thursday\, the tides will be in our favor\, so we’ll scamper along the beach to Paradise Cove\, where those of us who choose to\, will indulge in a delicious (but expensive) brunch. For those of us on a stricter budget\, bring a sandwich and a drink (but plan on hiking your trash back out) to have just down the beach. \nWe will absolutely *not* point out Barbra Streisand’s home on the cliff above the beach at the end of Zumirez Drive. \nThe Westward beach has somewhat expensive parking\, but we’ll arrive early\, when prices are lower. \nPlease bring ample hydration. There beach is exposed\, with no shade. \nNote: We will meet at the far eastern end of the Westward lot (film crews notwithstanding). Do NOT leave anything of value in your car\, at this or any other trailhead. \nDISCLAIMER / RELEASE OF LIABILITY \nThe hike host is a volunteer and not responsible for the group. Safety should be a priority for everyone in the group. Please treat this meet-up as hiking with a group of friends. SUMMARY:Hill Canyon - Hawk Lollipop - Easy Intermediate\, beginner option
DESCRIPTION:5.3 miles\, 600′ gain\, Easy-Intermediate\n2.5 miles\, 100′ gain\, Beginner \nWe start by crossing a bridge into a wooded area and continue down a relatively flat path alongside a stream. After about a mile\, we’ll come to a junction. \nFor those that want the full hike\, we’ll turn right and complete a 3 mile loop with 500′ of gain\, stopping just before the end of the loop for a social event at the picnic table on the left\, where we’ll share snacks and beverages for about 60 minutes. \nEasier Option.\nFor those that want to keep it beginner\, pass the junction and continue for 1/4 mile and no gain. That same picnic table will be on the right. \nFor the return\, we continue the loop for 1/4 mile\, then a relatively flat walk back for about a mile. \nHike Distance: 5.3 miles\, Beginner option is 2.5 miles.\nGain: 600′\, Beginner option is 100′.\nDistribution: Most of the incline is concentrated in the second quarter.\nDifficulty: Easy Intermediate/Easier option is beginner.\nShape: Lollipop.\nPace: approx. 2.0 mph.\nTrail Type: Fire road.\nTrail Variations: The first mile is mostly flat.\nAll of the trail is well groomed and not rugged.\nDuration: 3.5 hours\nDogs: Yes.\nRestrooms: Yes\, at trailhead\nDrinking Fountains: No.\nParking: Free in lot next to trail head. \nWhat to bring:\n1 liter of water for every 3 miles.\nHiking shoes/boots. Not required\, but recommended.\nFlashlight or headlamp.\nSunscreen and/or hat as needed.\nSnacks and/or beverages to share \nHosting \nRoute: The host knows the route. Click the link to see it. \nNavigation: Host memory\, enhanced by GPS navigation as needed. \nHike type: Social.\nWe won’t be hiking at a fast pace because this is a social hike\, not a conditioning hike. There is nothing wrong with stopping\, even if it means every 50 steps. \nInteresting Notes \nHere are a couple plants you are sure to see on this hike: \nWild Oats\nThe mature seed of the plant is used as a cereal grain. All oats have edible seeds\, although they are small and hard to harvest in most species. Oats are hard to tell apart from weedy relatives\, so the term “sowing wild oats” came to be used to describe unprofitable activities and destructive sexual liaisons of an unmarried young male that could result in children being born out of wedlock. \nRed Brome\nGrass like with thorny appearing tops. A sub-species of foxtail chess. Can lead to flash fires. Winter fires don’t kill the seeds. \nDirections: \nHill Canyon Trailhead\n10241 Hill Canyon Road (address is before trailhead\, continue to gravel lot on left)\nSanta Rosa Valley\, CA 93012\nCoordinates of trailhead: 34.226495\, -118.930374 \nFrom CA-118:\nCA-118 west to CA-23 south.\nExit 19 Tierra Rejada Rd.\, turn right (west) for 0.5 miles\nLeft (south) on Moorpark Rd. for 1.4 miles.\nRight on Santa Rosa Rd. for 3.7 miles.\nLeft on Hill Canyon Rd. for 0.6 miles.\nParking in gravel lot on left. \nFrom CA-101 (from Camarillo and farther west):\nExit Santa Rosa Rd. north for 4.9 miles.\nTurn right (south) on Hill Canyon Rd. for 0.6 miles.\nParking in gravel lot on left. \nFrom CA-23 and CA-101 (from Thousand Oaks):\nNorth on CA-12 for 3.1 miles.\nExit 16 Sunset Hills Blvd. and left (west) for 0.9 miles.\nLeft (west) on E. Olsen Rd. for 0.8 miles.\nRight (north) on N. Moorpark Rd. for 1.9 miles.\nContinue on Santa Rosa Rd. west for 3.7 miles.\nTurn left (south) on Hill Canyon Rd. for 0.6 miles.\nParking in gravel lot on left. \nParking can be very tight because it is also popular with bicyclists. Car pooling suggested\, because it would be sad for someone to not be able to hike because there isn’t any place to park. \nFAQ\nHiking Plus Page Links\nDisclaimer / Release of Liability

SUMMARY:Backbone Trail to Sandstone Peak and Mishe Mokwa Trail
DESCRIPTION:https://www.alltrails.com/trail/us/california/backbone-trail-to-sandstone-peak-and-mishe-mokwa-trail-loop?u=i&sh=aoxfvb \nHey Everyone\, \nI am taking over for a couple weeks. It should be cooling down by the time this hike is scheduled. I might move up the start time if the heatwave decides to stick around a little longer since these trails have little to no shade. We will be going clockwise to get most of the incline out of the way in the beginning. Once we get to the top of Sandstone Peak\, we will stop for some photos before making our way down and around the loop. There were some reports of biting bugs and overgrown parts of the trail. There are also a few water crossings on the map. Where there’s water\, there’s probably poison oak. Bug spray and long pants are recommended. I have attached the AllTrails link for stats\, directions\, and photos. https://www.alltrails.com/trail/us/california/backbone-trail-to-sandstone-peak-and-mishe-mokwa-trail-loop?u=i&sh=aoxfvb \nLoop\nMiles 5.9\nRated moderate\nElevation Gain 1340 ft\nDogs on leash are allowed on this trail\, however I do not recommend it due to the heat\nTwo dirt lots and some roadside parking \nAs of now there is no sweeper for this hike\, so please know if you feel you cannot finish for any reason please turn back early. \nPlease check back on hike info as rain\, heat advisory\, strong winds\, or low attendance may cause the hike to be rescheduled. \nWe will always follow Jim’s Golden Rules:\n1. Hike your own hike\n2. Please stop at every junction and split to wait for others to catch up \nPlease remember to bring all essentials you’ll need for a hike (water\, hat\, sunglasses\, hiking boot/hiking shoes\, poles\, snacks) \nLiability Disclaimer:\nAnd last…. The Organizer\, Co-Organizer\, Assistant Organizers and Event hosts in this group are not professional guides. The function of the Organizer is only to organize the trip. Each person who signs up for an Event is responsible for his or her own safety and the safety of his or her guest. Remember this is your hike. All responsibilities are your own once you attend. Please be aware of your limits. During outdoor activity you can encounter bodily injury\, snake bites\, sunburn\, overheating\, etc. This is not within our control\, and we ask that you are prepared for any of the above once you sign up for an Event. If you need to take several breaks (not counting quick breather breaks) and stops throughout a hike\, the hike may be too much for your ability. Please check each event for miles\, elevation gain\, and difficulty rating. The higher the elevation gain means more incline and less leveled off sections. We offer all levels of hikes from moderate to hard to advanced only. We encourage everyone to not give up work on your core by joining our easier moderate Events and then joining our harder hikes once you are ready. 😊

SUMMARY:Trailer Canyon to Green Peak - a Loop Hike
DESCRIPTION:THIS HIKE REPLACES THE SULLIVAN CANYON HIKE \nOur route begins on Trailer Canyon fire road providing broad views over Santa Ynez Canyon and the surrounding mountains. But like nature and vacuums\, we abhor fire roads. Thus\, shortly after the hike begins we will leave the fireroad and take a small\, slightly overgrown use trail that passes a clay gully and crosses a lush ridge up to the Temescal Ridge trail. We’ll return along the fire road making a loop in the canyon. \nAlong the way don’t forget to check out an old quarry marked by a single out of place palm tree juxtaposed against the indigenous chaparral. \nWe’ll soon meet up with Temescal Ridge trail and head over and up to Green Peak \nHike is 4.5 miles with 1\,000 feet total ascent and is rated MEDIUM+ due to terrain. See the HWD Hike Rating Guide \nDirections: \nFrom Sunset Boulevard\, half a mile east of PCH\, turn north on Palisades Drive and continue for 2.9 mi until you get to Palisades Ct. Turn left here then left again on Michael Ln. Trailhead is 0.2 mi on right — across the street form given address. Park on Michael Lane.

SUMMARY:Sullivan - Mandeville Loop
DESCRIPTION:The shady hike down Sullivan Canyon parallels a seasonal creek. Alive with the singing of birds\, this hike sounds and feels like an aviary housed within huge stands of sycamore\, oak\, and willow trees. We’ll be hiking on both the Sullivan side and the Mandeville Canyon side of the ridge dividing the two canyons creating a loop. \nThe hike will include a short but steep ascent and an equally steep descent on Mandeville Ridge — trekking poles are recommended. I don’t expect any bushwhacking. \nHike is 7 miles and rated MEDIUM+ due to terrain. See the HWD Hike Rating Guide \nDirections\nFrom Sunset Boulevard\, 2.3 miles west of the 405\, turn north onto Mandeville Canyon Road. After a third of a mile\, turn left onto Westridge Road. Drive up Westridge Road for 1.2 miles and turn left on Bayliss Road. Drive two blocks and make another left on Queensferry Road and find a place to legally park. \nThere is not much parking on Queensferry so be prepared to park on Bayliss \nWe’ll meet at the big green gate at end of Queensferry Rd

SUMMARY:Hike at Caspers Wilderness Park - Bell Canyon + Oso Trail
DESCRIPTION:Let’s start early and beat the heat! \nThe hike I am planning is around 6.3 miles with about 700 ft. of elevation gain. It starts at the very end of the paved road\, the long gray strip that can be seen on the map. \nWe will begin at the Bell Canyon Trail head. We will continue onto that and then take it to the Cougar Pass trail. We will go up that and make a left on Oso Trail. Once that ends\, we will come back down Bell Canyon Trail until we hit Star Ridge Trail. We will take this to West Ridge Trail and go left. This will take us to a single track trail\, Dick Loskorn Trail. This hits Nature Loops Trail and this will take us back to the beginning. \nThis is a beautiful hike with expansive views. It is a nice and remote hike\, so you are really out there in the wilderness. \nIf you have any questions regarding the park or the trails we will be on\, please let me know! \nHere is a link to the park map: http://ocparks.com/civicax/filebank/blobdload.aspx?BlobID=8164 \nThe address is: 33401 Ortega Hwy. San Juan Capistrano\, CA 92675 \nDogs are not allowed at this park. \nParking is $5\, unless you have an OC Parks Annual Permit. If you hike a lot\, it’s totally worth it: http://ocparks.com/about/fees/pass You can buy the pass at the park.

SUMMARY:Almost-Full-Moon hike Angel Vista - Easy Intermediate
DESCRIPTION:3.0 miles\, 800′ gain\, easy-intermediate. \nLet’s enjoy the gorgeous sunset and the almost full moon\, and fun loaded potluck picnic at the beautiful Angel Vista! \nThis hike is rated easy-intermediate because it is a continuous incline for 1.5 miles. This isn’t real steep\, but it is continuous\, and many beginner hikers have indicated this should be rated intermediate. \nThat said\, there is no reason a fit beginner cannot complete this hike. If needed\, just stop and rest along the way\, even if it’s every 50 steps. This is not a conditioning hike\, it is a social hike\, and you really can’t get lost. \nThe only junction is 200 yards before the top\, where we’ll turn right to complete the climb. \nAt the top\, there is a picnic table and 360 degree incredible views that are especially wonderful at night. We’ll have a snack-share social event at the top for 30-60 minutes before heading back the way we came. Please bring some food and drink to share\, and utensils of your item requires it. \nThe top has been known to sometimes be very cool and windy. Please bring something to put on in case it is that way at the top. \nInteresting Notes \nTree Tobacco \nThe Cahuilla Indians used the leaves interchangeably with other tobacco species in hunting rituals and as a poultice to treat swellings\, bruises\, cuts\, wounds\, boils\, sores\, inflamed throat\, and swollen glands. It does not contain nicotine. \nIt contains anabasine\, a similar compound\, which is highly toxic to humans and animals. It is more toxic than nicotine. Ingestion of the leaves can be fatal. It is being investigated for use as a biofuel. All parts of this plant are toxic. Used as an insecticide. Do not smoke. \nElderberry \nThe blue or purple berries are gathered and made into elderberry wine\, jam\, syrup\, and pies. The entire flower cluster can be dipped in batter and fried while petals can be eaten raw or made into a fragrant and tasty tea. Spit out the seeds. Elderflower water is also used in perfumes and sweets. \nMost agree that they do need to be cooked if you are going to eat more than just a few out of hand. That’s because they have a small amount of cyanide producing glycosides\, which are released upon digestion. Fully ripe black berries are not toxic and you can eat as many as you like. Boiling or baking takes care of any “toxic” issue as does drying raw berries. \nDirections:\nRosewood Trailhead\n398 Regal Oak Ct.\nThousand Oaks\, CA 91320 \nFrom the 101\nVentu Park exit\, South (toward ocean).\nRight on Lynn Road for 1000′.\nLeft on Regal Oak Ct. for 1/3 mi.\nPark on the street \nHike Distance: 3.0 miles\nGain: 800′\nDistribution: Most of the incline occurs in the first half\, which is a continuous climb.\nDifficulty: Easy Intermediate.\nShape: Out and back.\nPace: approx. 2.0 mph.\nTrail Type: Double track\, single track.\nDuration: 3.5 hours\nDogs: Yes.\nRestrooms: No\nDrinking Fountains: No.\nParking: Free along the street. \nWhat to bring\n1 liter of water for every 3 miles.\nHiking shoes/boots.
