SUMMARY:Hill Canyon - Hawk Lollipop - Easy Intermediate\, beginner option
DESCRIPTION:5.3 miles\, 600′ gain\, Easy-Intermediate2 miles\, 100′ gain\, Beginner \nWe start by crossing a bridge into a wooded area and continue down a relatively flat path alongside a stream. After about a mile\, we’ll come to a junction. \nFor those that want the full hike\, we’ll turn right and complete a 3 mile loop with 500′ of gain\, stopping just before the end of the loop for a social event at the picnic table on the left. \nThe social event that will last 60 minutes\, sharing snacks and beverages (https://www.meetup.com/Hiking-Plus/messages/boards/thread/50879772). \nFor those that want to keep it beginner\, pass the junction and continue for 1/4 mile and no gain. That same picnic table will be on the right. \nFor the return\, we continue the loop for 1/4 mile\, then a relatively flat walk back for about a mile. \nHike Distance: 5.3 milesGain: 600′Distribution: Most of the incline is concentrated in the second quarter.Difficulty (https://www.meetup.com/Hiking-Plus/messages/boards/thread/50879781): Easy Intermediate.Shape: Lollipop.Pace: approx. 2.0 mph.Trail Type: Fire road.Trail Variations: The first mile is flat. All of the trail is well groomed and not rugged.Duration: 3.5 hoursDogs: Yes.Restrooms: Yes\, at trailheadDrinking Fountains: No.Parking: Free in lot next to trail head. \nWhat to bring:1 liter of water for every 3 miles.Hiking shoes/boots. Not required\, but recommended.Flashlight or headlamp.Sunscreen and/or hat as needed.Snacks and/or beverages to share (https://www.meetup.com/Hiking-Plus/messages/boards/thread/50879772). \nHosting \nRoute: The host knows the route. The route is posted as a photo with this description. \nNavigation: Host memory\, enhanced by GPS navigation as needed. \nHike type: Social. We won’t be hiking at a fast pace because this is a social hike\, not a conditioning hike. There is nothing wrong with stopping\, even if it means every 50 steps. \nInteresting Notes \nHere are a couple plants you are sure to see on this hike: \nWild Oats \nThe mature seed of the plant is used as a cereal grain. All oats have edible seeds\, although they are small and hard to harvest in most species. Oats are hard to tell apart from weedy relatives\, so the term “sowing wild oats” came to be used to describe unprofitable activities and destructive sexual liaisons of an unmarried young male that could result in children being born out of wedlock. \nRed Brome \nGrass like with thorny appearing tops. A sub-species of foxtail chess. Can lead to flash fires. Winter fires don’t kill the seeds. \nDirections: \nHill Canyon Trailhead10241 Hill Canyon Road (address is before trailhead\, continue to gravel lot on left)Santa Rosa Valley\, CA 93012Coordinates of trailhead: 34.226495\, -118.930374 \nFrom CA-118:CA-118 west to CA-23 south.Exit 19 Tierra Rejada Rd.\, turn right (west) for 0.5 milesLeft (south) on Moorpark Rd. for 1.4 miles.Right on Santa Rosa Rd. for 3.7 miles.Left on Hill Canyon Rd. for 0.6 miles.Parking in gravel lot on left. \nFrom CA-101 (from Camarillo and farther west):Exit Santa Rosa Rd. north for 4.9 miles.Turn right (south) on Hill Canyon Rd. for 0.6 miles.Parking in gravel lot on left. \nFrom CA-23 and CA-101 (from Thousand Oaks):North on CA-12 for 3.1 miles.Exit 16 Sunset Hills Blvd. and left (west) for 0.9 miles.Left (west) on E. SUMMARY:Mill Creek Summit to Mt. Pacifico and Return
DESCRIPTION:Hike to Mt. Pacifico via the PCT from the Mill Creek Summit Ranger Station at the crest of the Angeles Forest Hwy and return. The top of Mt. Pacifico has very nice picnic tables and is a frequent destination for campers. \nThere is LOTS of exposure on this hike\, so be prepared for lots of sun.Mt. Pacifico itself is beautiful and in the trees. \nA word of caution\, Mt. Pacifico lies just west of the western edge of the Bobcat fire closure. I don’t believe the camp or the route has been affected. \nBring snacks for the summit and trail. \nStats: \nDistance: 13 miles \nElevation Gain: 2\,400 ft. \nMax elevation : 7\,103 ft. \nRating: 7/10 Somewhat strenuous \nTrail: Mostly single track and a bit of graded forest service road. \nESSENTIALS: \n2 Liters of water (Minimum) \nSunscreen \nHat \nSnacks \nHiking Poles (Recommended) \nLayered clothing (can be windy & chilly at the summit) \nCheck the Weatherhttps://forecast.weather.gov/MapClick.php?lon=-118.04616458004175&lat=34.38350843275154 \nPLEASE – Know your limits and abilities. Bring and drink plenty of liquids when hiking. Check weather conditions and dress accordingly and be aware of your surroundings at all times. Watching out for snakes\, ticks\, uneven footing\, spectacular views\, beautiful fauna all while carrying on a conversation with awesome (usually) fellow hikers can be extremely hazardous\, rewarding and fun. \n******************************************************************* \nVHC HIKE RATING SCALE \nRating a hike is subjective\, meaning the difficulty of a hike will be in direct relation to how often you hike and the type of hike you prefer. Keep in mind that any hike can have the following: un-even hiking surfaces\, various obstructions\, water and/or water crossings or bouldering and/or rock hopping. A great hike will have all of these! \n1 – A long walk \n2 – 4 mile hike w/little elevation gain \n3 – 5 mile hike w/up to1000 ft. elevation gain \n4 – 5+ mile hike w/up to1500 ft. elevation gain (heart rate increases at times) \n5 – 7+ mile hike w/over 1500 ft. elevation gain (heart rate increasing even more at times) \n6 – 7+ mile hike w/over 2000 ft. elevation gain (at times you might be trying to remember how to perform CPR) \n7 – 5+ mile hike w/over 2000 ft. elevation gain (at times you might be muttering expletives to yourself) \n8 – 10+ mile hike w/over 3500 ft. elevation gain (at times you might be angry with the hike leader) \n9 – 10+ mile hike w/over 5000 ft. elevation gain (at times you might be thinking of reporting the hike leader to the authorities) \n10 – Use your imagination \nClass 3 Scrambling: Scrambling or un-roped climbing. You must use your hands at times to hold the terrain or find your route. This may be caused by a combination of boulders\, steepness and extreme terrain. Some Class 3 routes have ropes in place for assistance. \nDISCLAIMER / RELEASE OF LIABILITY \nIMPORTANT\, PLEASE READ BELOW IN ITS ENTIRETY: \nI am a volunteer (i.e. not liable for the group). Safety is a priority for everyone in the group. Think of this as hiking with a group of friends. \nOutdoor sports and other events we plan can be inherently dangerous and accidents may happen. By participating in any posted event\, you’re taking responsibility for your own safety and well-being. The Valencia Hiking Crew Meetup Group and its organizers are not trained leaders and we do not confirm the qualifications of any of its members to lead or participate in trips. All participants take full responsibility for their own actions. If you choose to sign up for any Valencia Hiking Crew Meetup events\, you are releasing the Valencia Hiking Crew Meetup Group and it’s organizers from all liability in case of possible injuries as stated in paragraph 6.2 of the Meetup “Terms of Service” located on the bottom of the Meetup website. Your personal safety depends on your own judgment and experience.

SUMMARY:RAZORBACKS SERIES IN THE LOS PADRES MOUNTAINS #1
DESCRIPTION:BEFORE YOU WILL BE MOVED TO THE GOING LIST\, YOU WILL NEED TO UPDATE YOUR CDH PROFILE (The three questions must be answered with a “yes”) IF YOU HAVE NOT ALREADY DONE SO.NEED HELP:go to: https://wp.me/P9MbG4-hC \nHave you looked at our past events into the RAZORBACK ridge area of the Los Padres National Forest and wished you were able to enjoy this area but missed out. Well\, I’ll now be posting a series of events for all our CDH members to enjoy this area below pinyon pine covered ridges. We’ll start off with the easier hikes and work up to exploratory ones. I’ll number these so that you’ll be able to identify which ones you have done. As in Bryce Canyon\, there are many canyons\, but unlike Bryce where you have to stay on the trails\, this area has but one trail. the rest of the events will be x-country routes. All our events will first have us meet at the Flying J Travel Center in Lebec and car pool from there to our destinations about 30 minutes away. \n======================= RAZORBACKS #1 ============================== \nThis first area of the Razorbacks is where I was first introduced to these spectacular weather created rock sculptures in the Los Padres National Forest while on a Cub Scout outing at Camp Three Falls over 25 years ago with my son. Access will be via a 4+ mile 500′ gain round trip trail starting at 5500′ and reaching our viewing destination at 6000′. \nMEETUP LOCATION AND TIME:The Flying J Travel Center in Lebec at 8:00 am:https://www.google.com/maps/place/34%C2%B049’00.4%22N+118%C2%B053’10.2%22W/@34.8167674\,-118.8883557\,918m/data=!3m2!1e3!4b1!4m17!1m10!4m9!1m3!2m2!1d-119.1365275!2d34.7489344!1m3!2m2!1d-119.1584843!2d34.7287962!3e0!3m5!1s0x0:0x0!7e2!8m2!3d34.8167631!4d-118.8861666From here we’ll caravan to the Three Falls Boy Scout Camp where we will start the hike. \nDISTANCE: 4+ miles \nROUTE: Double and single track trails to the ridgeline overlooking THE BOWL. \nELEVATION GAIN/LOSS: 500’+/500’+ \nTHE PACE: No faster than the slowest Trekker \nDURATION: I’d like to get back to the cars no later than 2:00 p.m. It’s a short hike and a long drive\, but the views are well worth it. We’ll spend a lot of time soaking in the views before heading back down. This event is perfect for our WW (Walking Wounded) members. \nLUNCH OPTION: After the hike\, as an option\, those interested can join me for a late lunch The Falcon Nest in Frazier Park. \nLEVEL: Advanced beginner \nMY CELL# IS 805-358-5972 \nNO DOGS ALLOWED

Our hike will begin at the west end of Calabasas Rd where “The Trail Between Two Valleys” was dedicated in 2005 \nThis is the path the Juan Bautista De Anza party took in 1776 connecting the San Fernando Valley and Las Virgenes Valley while establishing missions along the way from Mexico to San Francisco. \n\n\n 20%	\n \n \n \n \n TheFitLife Carbon Fiber Trekking Poles – Collapsible and Telescopic Walking Stic... \n \n $50.68 $40.54 (As of: 2025/08/28 5:00 pm - Details)\n View on Amazon \n \n \n \n\n ×Product prices and availability are accurate as of the date/time indicated and are subject to change. Any price and availability information displayed on https://www.amazon.com/ at the time of purchase will apply to the purchase of this product.\nOne of the attractions along this trail is a more than 100-year old section of US 101\, known at the time as Ventura Rd aka El Camino Real. Here are a couple of sections from when the road was widened in 1924. I shot the first on 8/2006. Fellow member Bruce cleaned up the area about 8 years ago and revealed the contractor’s name \n[vc_media_grid style=”lazy” element_width=”6″ item=”mediaGrid_ScaleInWithIcon” grid_id=”vc_gid:1636135955940-ecfa2dbe-08b4-3″ include=”99612\,99611″] \nWe’ll then connect to the Anza Loop Trail and into Calabash Canyon where we’ll come across some interesting artifacts. This pair of photos is from 8/2006 when I first explored the area. The trail was once an active jeep road. \n[vc_media_grid style=”lazy” element_width=”6″ item=”mediaGrid_ScaleInWithIcon” grid_id=”vc_gid:1636134706146-b1d765a0-a2a7-9″ include=”99617\,99616″] \nAfter some switchbacks\, grassy hillsides and wooded canyons we’ll make a side trip to the Calabasas Stairs\, a straight up-and-down shot rising a total of 375 steps. The stairs are a tenth of a mile long and climb 185 feet of elevation. \nBut before we get to the stairs we’ll need to climb an old set of steps (photo is from 2/2020) \n[vc_media_grid element_width=”6″ item=”mediaGrid_ScaleInWithIcon” grid_id=”vc_gid:1636135955941-8d3361a2-80ba-6″ include=”99628\,99627″] \nWe will then return to the cars along sloping grasslands. \n[vc_message message_box_color=”warning”]HIKE IS ABOUT 5 MILES WITH ABOUT 1\,400 FT TOTAL ASCENT AND IS RATED MEDIUM. SUMMARY:Tapo Canyon Tar Pits - Easy Intermediate
DESCRIPTION:5.4 miles\, 1050′ gain\, Easy Intermediate. \nThis hike is one of the most beautiful hikes in Simi Valley. There are 3 extended inclines\, about 1000 steps each\, on fire road. They are not especially steep\, but they do continue for some time\, which is why it is rated “Easy Intermediate.” There are also several small hills of 100 steps or less. \nThe extended inclines will get the blood pumping and maybe even cause a curse or two during this lollipop hike. We’ll be moving through the famous Tapo Canyon and visiting natural tar pits that bubble up from the ground. \nThe first pit is really a puddle that looks like someone spilled a couple 55-gallon drums of tar that was later contained using a spill rope. The next two are a little larger\, again\, contained by spill ropes to keep the sticky black tar from getting on the trail. \nI would advise you not to touch the tar with anything other than a stick\, because even a drop on your fingertip will be hard to get off. \nFrom the trail head\, we’ll start on a leisurely stroll for about 0.6 miles\, followed by a steady climb for the next mile\, completing the first extended incline. \nWe’ll turn left at the junction\, climb a small hill of a couple hundred steps\, and then head down for 1.5 miles. \nWe’ll make a right turn down a smaller trail and go for about 100 yards until we reach the tar pits. After looking around for a bit\, we’ll head back\, and after 0.25 miles\, we’ll come to another junction where we will stop and share snacks and beverages (https://www.meetup.com/Hiking-Plus/messages/boards/thread/50879772). \nFor the return\, we’ll turn left and there will be a steady climb for about 3/4 of a mile to another junction. We’ll turn left again and return down for about 1.4 miles to complete the lollipop. \nRoute: There is a photo posted with this event. \nInteresting Notes: \nYou are sure to see plenty of this plant – \nYellow Star Thistle \nThorny. Also called yellow cockspur and golden star thistle. Generally considered a weed. Long-term ingestion by horses causes a neurological disorder known as chewing disease\, a lethal lesion of the nigropallidal region of the brain. This disease is expressed as a twitching of the lips\, tongue flicking\, and involuntary chewing. Permanent brain damage is possible\, and affected horses may starve to death. Used in Turkish folk medicine for the treatment of ulcers. In a laboratory study\, aqueous extracts of fresh or dried flowers of yellow star thistle given orally showed significant antiulcerogenic activity in rats. \nDirections: \nTapo Canyon3802 Tapo Canyon RoadSimi Valley\, CA 93063 \nFrom the 118: \nExit 27 Tapo Canyon Rd.Tapo Canyon Rd. north for 1.7 miles.Trail head on the right\, before Lost Canyon Rd.Parking is free in the gravel area in front of the trail head\, and along the road on both sides. \nFrom CA-23: \nCA-23 north to CA-118 east.CA-118 east for 8.7 miles.Exit 27 Tapo Canyon Rd.Tapo Canyon Rd. north (left) for 1.7 miles.Trail head on the right.Parking is free in the gravel area in front of the trail head\, and along the road on both sides. \nHike \nDistance: 5.4 milesGain: 1050′Distribution: Reasonably well distributed.Difficulty (https://www.meetup.com/Hiking-Plus/messages/boards/thread/50879781): Easy Intermediate.Shape: Lollipop\, clockwise.Pace: 2.0 mph.Trail Type: Fire road and double track. SUMMARY:Ice House Canyon To Ontario Peak and Return
DESCRIPTION:Distance: 13 miles round trip; 3\,593′ elevation gain/loss \nRating: 8/10\, not for beginners. \nElevation starts at 5\,100’ at the trail head. \nAdventure Parking Pass Required! \nBring plenty of water and electrolyte replacement! \nCheck the Weather (http://www.wunderground.com/cgi-bin/findweather/hdfForecast?query=91759) \nOntario Peak is the smaller sister of Cucamonga Peak in the Cucamonga Wilderness. Ontario Peak\, with its 8\,693′ summit\, offers spectacular views of the entire area including the inland empire (on a clear day)\, the San Jacintos\, the San Bernardinos\, the Santa Ana Mountain range which lies directly south\, and the majority of the other major peaks in the area\, such as Baldy\, the three T’s\, Cucamonga\, etc… The hike begins in Icehouse Canyon\, the hikers’ gateway to the eastern high country and the Cucamonga Wilderness. Its broad\, V shaped portal leads east from San Antonio Canyon\, 10 miles north of Mt. Baldy Village\, and climbs 2600′ to Icehouse Saddle\, a prominent gap on the great Telegraph Ontario Ridge. The saddle is a major trail junction\, with routes leading in four directions. From the saddle we’ll follow the trail up past Kelly’s Camp\, climbing a further 500′ to the summit to enjoy the view and lunch. As always know your limits\, bring ample quantities of water\, a hat and sunscreen\, good hiking shoes. Walking sticks would be helpful in certain areas. \nThe Norman Ollestad Story \nOn February 19\, 1979\, 11-year-old Norman Ollestad was traveling from Santa Monica airport into Big Bear to retrieve a skiing trophy he had won the day before. Along for the ride were his father\, his father’s girlfriend\, Sandra\, and the pilot of the small\, chartered Cessna. \nAbout fifteen minutes into the flight\, they were caught up in a blizzard and the plane crashed into Ontario Peak mountain and Norman’s father and the pilot were instantly killed. Norman and Sandra survived\, but she had a broken arm and a severe head injury. Cut off from radar\, and in the middle of a near white-out\, little Norman had to lead them down to safety with Sandra\, sometimes\, literally on his back. The dangerous trek down the steep mountain lasted 9 hours\, and when it was over\, Sandra too\, was dead. Frostbitten and barely able to walk\, Norman was the only survivor of the tragedy. \nNorman wrote of his experience in Crazy for the Storm (http://www.crazyforthestorm.com/index.php). \nDirections: Check your local map to plan a route to the 210 freeway traveling east from Pasadena past the 57 freeway. As you enter the town of Upland\, exit at Base Line\, turn left on Base Line and take the first right on Padua Ave. Make a right on Mt. Baldy Road into the mountains towards Baldy Village. A couple miles after Baldy Village you will enter the parking lot for Ice House Canyon. Make sure you do not keep going up to the Manker Flats area. Park your car in the parking lot making sure to display your pass in the windshield. \n******************************************************************* \nPLEASE – Know your limits and abilities. Bring snacks and drink plenty of liquids when hiking. Check weather conditions and dress accordingly and be aware of your surroundings at all times. Watching out for poison oak\, snakes\, ticks\, uneven footing\, spectacular views\, beautiful fauna all while interacting with awesome (usually) fellow hikers can be extremely hazardous\, rewarding and fun. \nVHC HIKE RATING SCALE \nRating a hike is subjective\, meaning the difficulty of a hike will be in direct relation to how often you hike and the type of hike you prefer. SUMMARY:RAZORBACKS SERIES IN THE LOS PADRES MOUNTAINS #2
\n======================= RAZORBACKS #2 ============================== \nThis second area in the Razorbacks was first seen by us when I planned a cross country route to San Guillermo Mountain. Back then we took a treacherous route which I have since changed to a much safer cross country trek to view these spectacular weather created rock sculptures in the Los Padres National Forest. Access will be via a 4+ mile 800’+ gain round trip trek starting at 5300′ and reaching our viewing destination at 6100′.Like our first event in this series\, we will be on a ridge looking down at the carvings mother nature has created via water erosion. \nMEETUP LOCATION AND TIME:The Flying J Travel Center in Lebec at 7:30 am:https://www.google.com/maps/place/34%C2%B049’00.4%22N+118%C2%B053’10.2%22W/@34.8167674\,-118.8883557\,918m/data=!3m2!1e3!4b1!4m17!1m10!4m9!1m3!2m2!1d-119.1365275!2d34.7489344!1m3!2m2!1d-119.1584843!2d34.7287962!3e0!3m5!1s0x0:0x0!7e2!8m2!3d34.8167631!4d-118.8861666From here we’ll caravan to our destination a half hour away to begin our cross country trek. Although this trek will be geared for our intermediate hikers that like an off trail hike\, our stronger hikers will enjoy this as well. Just remember that it will be at a slow intermediate pace. It’s a long day for a short trek but so worth it. \nEARLIER MEETUP LOCATION AND TIME: Agoura Hills Park and Ride at 6:00amhttps://www.google.com/maps/place/34%C2%B008’43.2%22N+118%C2%B045’37.6%22W/@34.1453344\,-118.7626267\,17z/data=!3m1!4b1!4m6!3m5!1s0x0:0x0!7e2!8m2!3d34.1453295!4d-118.7604382 \nDISTANCE: 4+ miles \nROUTE: Cross country route to the ridgeline overlooking THE BOWL as seen in the photo above. \nELEVATION GAIN/LOSS: 800’+/800’+ \nTHE PACE: No faster than the slowest Trekker \nDURATION: I’d like to get back to the cars no later than 2:00 p.m. It’s a short hike and a long drive\, but the views are well worth it. We’ll spend a lot of time soaking in the views before heading back down. \nLUNCH OPTION: After the hike\, as an option\, those interested can join me for a late lunch The Falcon Nest in Frazier Park. \nLEVEL: Intermediate hiker who likes cross country hiking. \nMY CELL# IS 805-358-5972 \nNO DOGS ALLOWED

SUMMARY:Las Llajas Canyon Loop
DESCRIPTION:It looks like we can once again make a nice 10 mile loop up Las Llajas Canyon. We’ll pass by some of the first oil wells drilled in California in the early 1900’s and take a break at the 1920’s excavator left behind from the Coquina Mine. \nSTATS \nDistance: 10+ mi \nElevation Gain: 2\,200 ft \nRating: 7/10 \nTrail: Fire-road\, trail\, loop \nPace: Moderate \nFees/pass: none \nTHE STORY \nIn the early 1900s this land was owned by the Simi Valley Oil Company and later purchased by Howard Marr in the 1920s. It became known as Marrland. In 1929 Howard Marr leased a portion of his land to the Tapo Alto Shell and Fertilizer Company to mine for limestone. \nHeavy equipment was brought in to strip the hilltop of an unusually pure form of calcium carbonate from a fossilized reef called Coquina Limestone (shell or oyster limestone). The State Department of Agriculture found it to be 98% pure. At one time\, this entire area was underwater and you can see evidence of this in the thousands of shells embedded in the rock near the mine. \nMining operations ceased in 1935. The road used to bring in equipment had been largely washed away and much of the mining equipment was left behind. The main attraction is the P&H Company power shovel. It’s a Model 206\, considered to be a small power shovel but it put P&H on the map. The company would ultimately meet its downfall due to asbestos in the brake linings. Asbestos was touted as a miracle mineral for much of the 20th century. At P&H’s manufacturing plants\, brake linings regularly had to be grinded down in order to fit casings on cranes and other machinery. The process released large amounts of asbestos dust into the air\, polluting the work environment and putting workers’ health at risk. \nSome interesting history about the name: Las Llajas was first used in 1931 and is likely a misspelling of the spanish words las llagas which translates to the wounds\, referring to the stigmata of a Roman Catholic saint. From 1914-1920 a cult called Pisgah Grande lived in this canyon and created a secluded colony with 30 buildings. It had over 300 members. If you look in the right places\, you can still find old bricks stamped with Pisgah markings where buildings used to rest. \n************************** \nThe Fine Print \nPLEASE – Know your limits and abilities. \nThe Farzan Rule: Posted hike times are the time the hike starts or we leave from a posted shuttle location. I’m aware other Meetup groups offer a grace period for late arrivals; we don’t. It’s your responsibility to know the location of the meeting spot and be there and ready to participate at the posted time. If you have any concerns about the directions feel free to contact the organizer of the event\, preferably in advance of the event and not at the start time. I’m of the opinion that it’s not fair to delay an event when the majority of attendees have arrived on-time. (so named after a conversation I had with a certain un-named member) \nRSVP’s: If you RSVP for an event be responsible and update your RSVP if your plans change. If your plans change at the last second and you’re not able to update your RSVP also let us know. In my opinion a no-show is someone who has no regard for following the guidelines we request from our members and will risk being removed from future events that have a limit. \nVHC HIKE RATING SCALE \nRating a hike is subjective\, meaning the difficulty of a hike will be in direct relation to how often you hike and the type of hike you prefer. Keep in mind that any hike can have the following: un-even hiking surfaces\, various obstructions\, water and/or water crossings or bouldering and/or rock hopping. SUMMARY:Chumash - Intermediate
DESCRIPTION:4 miles\, 1100′ gain\, Intermediate. \nFit beginners can still do it\, but they should be aware that the entire hike outbound is a steady incline. Nothing super steep\, just continuous and quite strenuous for many. \nThat’s OK\, because this is not a conditioning hike\, it’s a social hike. We’ll be stopping at various points to let people catch up\, and there are virtually no junctions where one can get lost. \nThis is one of the more famous hikes in Simi Valley\, and for good reason. Much of the hike takes place along the edge of the mountain. The trail in spots is a bit rugged and rocky\, so a good tread on your shoes is recommended. \nIt is a part of the Chumash Natural Park that includes sandstone rock formations\, caves\, and beautiful vistas of Simi Valley. The land is owned by the Santa Monica Mountains Conservancy and the Rancho Simi Recreation & Park District. It is maintained by the Rancho Simi Trailblazers and patrolled by the Volunteer Trail Safety Service. \nWe’ll be climbing for about 2 miles to “flat rock”\, where we’ll stop to have our traditional social event\, sharing snacks and beverages (https://www.meetup.com/Hiking-Plus/messages/boards/thread/50879772). Since there is really no way to get lost on this hike\, those that wish to move ahead at a faster pace are welcome to do so\, but keep in mind where we plan on stopping\, and then ultimately turning back. \nThe Route. \nHike. \nDistance: 4.0 milesGain: 1100′Distribution: Most of the incline is concentrated in the first half.Difficulty (https://www.meetup.com/Hiking-Plus/messages/boards/thread/50879781): Intermediate.Shape: Out and back.Pace: approx. 2.0 mph.Trail Type: Fire road\, double track\, single track.Trail Variations: The entire first half is incline. Some of the trail is rugged sandstone. Some of the trail is covered in large gravel. Proceed carefully.Duration: 3.5 hoursDogs: Yes.Restrooms: NoDrinking Fountains: No.Parking: Free along street. \nWhat to bring: 1 liter of water for every 3 miles.Hiking shoes/boots. A pic of the route has been posted as part of this description. \nNavigation: Host memory\, enhanced by GPS navigation as needed. \nHike type: Social. We won’t be hiking at a fast pace because this is a social hike\, not a conditioning hike. There is nothing wrong with stopping\, even if it means every 50 steps. See “How hard is this hike” in the discussion section (LINK (https://www.meetup.com/Hiking-Plus/messages/boards/thread/50879781)). \nStops: The host may designate stopping points to let others catch up. This hike will include an extended stop for a snack and beverage (https://www.meetup.com/Hiking-Plus/messages/boards/thread/50879772) share at the half way point. There may not always be a sweeper designated to be the last hiker. \nEach hiker is responsible for knowing their capability\, only attending events where they are able to sustain the described pace\, for keeping up with the group sufficiently enough to make the turns and not get left behind\, and for making sure the host is notified if they are going to split from the group. \nGroup separation: Sometimes hikers wish to move significantly ahead and not wait at designated stopping points. Please let the host know. They are on their own regarding route and navigation. \nInteresting Notes \nHere are a couple plants you are sure to see on this hike: \nCalifornia Encelia \nAka\, California Bush Sunflower\, California Brittlebush\, Coast Sunflower\, El Dorado. \nCenter is brown. When the center is yellow\, it is Brittlebush\, from the brittleness of the stems. This is from the daisy family\, and it is typically used as an ornamental plant. \nMediterranean Mustard / Black Mustard \nMediterranean mustard seeds are yellow or white\, while Black mustard seeds are brown or black. The flowers look the same. \nFlowers\, leaves (mustard greens)\, and roots are edible. Can be used as a spice. Grind seeds and mix with water and vinegar to make prepared mustard. This is often a very abundant noxious weed (has been designated by an agricultural authority as one that is injurious to agricultural or horticultural crops\, natural habitats or ecosystems\, or humans or livestock.). It grows everywhere along the sides of the trail\, often having to be cut back during trail maintenance. \nDirections: \nChumash Trail3200 Flanagan Dr.Simi Valley\, CA 93063Coordinates of trailhead: 34.293497\, -118.671176 \nFrom CA-118:I-118\, exit Yosemite.North on Yosemite for 1.3 miles.Right (east) on Flanagan Dr. for 08. miles.Continue until the street ends and park. \nRelease of Liability: https://www.meetup.com/Hiking-Plus/pages/29622459/Is_Hiking_Dangerous/

SUMMARY:Red Rock Canyon to Calabasas Peak
DESCRIPTION:https://www.alltrails.com/trail/us/california/red-rock-canyon-to-calabasas-peak \nHello Fellow hikers\,Okay this is going to be a interesting one. From the start your drive into the parking lot will be on a dirt road that maybe bumpy so you might have to drive a little slow. There will be a $5 fee to park you should end up at Red Rock Canyon Park. Some can park outside the lot and walk in but there isn’t a lot of spots for this. The parking lot itself maybe a little small so will have to put a limit on the hike. Now for the hike. We will be making a short hike on a side trail to the reclining man cave (its a cave that looks like a face of a man lying on the ground) only .22 additional mileage will add on to our 4.2 or we can also continue on to Red Rock Canyon Lookout which is 1.1 miles. Now our main trail sounds like it has a nice incline to the top with sections more of a incline than other sections on the trail. There will be shade from the start then opens to views. Will make our way to the top of Calabasas Peak (there will be a peak marker) then head to the concrete slab to finish up the hike and head back. This one is going to be a good workout. I attached the AllTrails link for directions\, pics\, and stats https://www.alltrails.com/trail/us/california/red-rock-canyon-to-calabasas-peak \nTrail out and backRated moderateMiles 4.2 (probably a little more with our additional stop)Elevation Gain 1059 ftDogs allowed \nWe will always follow Jim’s Golden Rules:1) Hike your own hike2) Please stop at every junction and split to wait for others to catch up \nPlease remember to bring all essentials you’ll need for a hike \nAnd last….The Organizer\, Co Organizer\, Assistant Organizers and Event hosts in this group are not professional guides. SUMMARY:The scenic route to Mt. Baden-Powell from Dawson Saddle and Return
DESCRIPTION:Our route takes us up the Dawson saddle and connects with the PCT just east of Throop Peak. From there we proceed east on a steady grade on the PCT passing Mt. Burham and then up and onto Mt. Baden Powell. At the top we will plan on having a snack\, signing the register and taking some great photographs of the scenery and the Boy Scout summit monument. \nDistance: 9.5 miles Duration: 5-6 Hours. \nLunch and or drinks at Newcomb’s Ranch Cafe after is an option. \nElevation Gain: 2\,600 ft. \nElevation at Mt. Baden Powell: 9\,380 ft. \nRating: Moderate 6/10 Out and Back \nAbout the hike:Some years ago the Boy Scouts built a beautiful feeder route to the Pacific Crest Trail from Dawson Saddle on Hwy 2. The neat thing is\, the trail head at the highway is at 7\,900 feet\, the highest elevation for the entire Angeles Crest Hwy 2. \nWhat does this mean for us? Simply put\, with a moderate amount of effort you can experience the prettiest portion of the PCT in Southern California and summit Mt. Baden Powell through the back door\, all without the 4 mile vertical slug fest coming up from Vincent Gap. This entire route generates incredible vistas as you traverse the spine of the back range of the San Gabriels. On one side is the the Mojave Desert while Los Angeles spreads out beneath on the other. The views on this hike just keep getting better and better until they culminate on the summit of Baden-Powell with 360 degree views that go on to infinity\, simply an amazing place. Equally as important\, from start to finish\, this section of the PCT is all beautiful Alpine forest\, you’d swear you should be seeing folks walking by in Lederhosen! \nTo contact me call my cell at 805-630-4277 \nDawson Saddle is at: \nMile Marker 69.5 \n(measured from its start down in LA). Look for a largeCal Trans metal service building on the north side of the road \nA sign on the building reads Dawson Saddle. Continue on about 200 ft to the apex of the curve and park on the north side of the road where it is widened out for parking. \nhttps://www.google.com/maps/dir/34.3682108\,-117.8020144/34.2090726\,-118.1999382/@34.3679383\,-117.8018458\,309m/data=!3m1!1e3!4m3!4m2!1m0!1m0?hl=en \nVHC HIKE RATING SCALE \nRating a hike is subjective\, meaning the difficulty of a hike will be in direct relation to how often you hike and the type of hike you prefer.
