SUMMARY:Palo Comado - Cheeseboro Loop
DESCRIPTION:Palo Comado and Cheeseboro Canyons\, near Agoura Hills\, is a wildlife corridor connecting the Santa Monica Mountains with the Santa Susana Mountains. This north-south corridor allows animals to move freely between the two ranges. \nWe will enter Palo Comado from Agoura High School and loop around the underbelly of Cheeseboro and Palo Comado Canyons via the Ranch Center Connector. This will be a new starting location for us and we’ll be hiking up to the Agoura A along the way \nHike is about 8 miles with 1800′ total elevation gain and rated DIFFICULT due to terrain. See the HWD Hike Rating Guide \nDIRECTIONS\nHead to the address but do not park at that address. Park near end of E Thousand Oaks Blvd instead\, by the school. We meet at the end of TO Blvd. \nTrail statistics are approximate. For safety purposes always assume they are underestimated. But don’t be disappointed if they are overestimated. Bring more water and snacks than you think you’ll need.\nTrail descriptions are based on previous hikes. Current conditions are unknown until arrival. Expect the unexpected and plan accordingly.\nThe Organizers and members of Hiking With Dean are not professional leaders\, guides\, or mountaineers. The function of the member or organizer is only to organize the trip. Each person who shows up for a trip/meetup (and their guest or guests) is responsible for his or her own safety. By attending a hike\, or any other event organized by this group\, you are acknowledging that you and any guests that you bring are aware of the risks\, dangers and hazards associated with the activity and freely accept and fully assume all such risks\, dangers and hazards\, and further agree to release and discharge the Organizers\, Members of the Hiking With Dean Meetup Group from and against any and all liability arising from your participation in the group activities per our ASSUMPTION OF RISK AND LIABILITY WAIVER and Section 6.2 of the Meetup.com Terms of Service.

SUMMARY:Potrero – All paved – Easy Intermediate\, cooler location
DESCRIPTION:5.75 miles\, 700′ gain. Easy Intermediate.\nDo not park on Potrero else risk getting a ticket. You need a permit to park on this street. \nThis hike is a great trail when it might be muddy because almost the entire hike is on an asphalt path through a huge state park (> 20 sq miles). It’s also a good option when it’s very hot out\, because this is one of the cooler areas where we hike\, half shaded\, and most of the incline is on the return. \nSince the elevation gain is low and the route is paved\, we’ll be likely hiking a little faster than typical. It’s a little more than 8 miles to go all the way to the ocean. \nAt the 2.9 mile mark\, we’ll find a picnic table 350′ off to the right side\, where we’ll stop and have a social event for about an hour before heading back the way we came. There are no turns on this hike\, so as long as you stay on the asphalt path\, you really can’t get lost. \nDirections\n4161 Potrero Rd.\nThousand Oaks\, CA 91320\n34.156636\, -118.962989 \nNote that when turning left at the dead end to continue on Potrero Rd.\, the sign at the intersection will say S. Reina. It is that name if you go right. But we go to the left\, so it is a continuation of Potrero Rd. \nFrom the west: 101-S\, Exit 48B Wendy Dr.\, turn right.\nFrom the east: 101-N\, Exit 47C Wendy Dr.\, turn left.\nSouth on Wendy Dr. until it deadends at Potrero Rd.\nRight on Potrero Rd. for 0.5 miles.\nLeft to stay on Potrero Rd. SUMMARY:Hill Canyon Santa Rosa Regional Park
DESCRIPTION:This is a gentler hike. We will start at the parking area in Hill Canyon\, cross the bridge over the runoff creek\, and stroll a mile before turning onto the fire road up the Western Plateau. We will go straight at the crest of the fire road and then turn on the Plateau Rim loop and then return down the Hawk Canyon Trail. The Hawk Canyon Trail connects to Western Plateau Trail back to the parking lot. We will take a few breaks along the way to wait for everyone to catch up. This is approximately 6 miles with an elevation gain of approximately 1000 feet. Not sure if the parking lot we usually used is still closed for construction work\, if so park near the bathrooms. \nDirections: \nFrom Moorpark Road in the Santa Rosa Valley\, drive west on Santa Rosa Road for 3.7 miles\, turn left (south) on Hill Canyon Road for about 0.6 miles to the parking lot. \nFrom the 101 Freeway in Camarillo\, take exit 52 onto Santa Rosa Road and drive northeast. After 5 miles\, turn right onto Hill Canyon Road for about 0.6 miles to the parking lot. \nPlease review the guidelines (link to the guidelines) to join our hikes. \nRestrictions apply for your safety and ours: \n\nPlease do not show up unless you’re shown on the “Attending” list.\nNo dogs.\nNo “Plus Ones” Weekday Trailblazer hikes.\n\nDISCLAIMER/RELEASE OF LIABILITY – PLEASE READ IN ITS ENTIRETY \nThe hike host is a volunteer and not responsible for the group. Safety should be a priority for everyone in the group. Please treat this meet-up as hiking with a group of friends. If you become fatigued and unable to continue the hike\, it is expected you will advise the hike host of this and return to our starting point on your own. If you are able to proceed\, it is expected that you will maintain line of sight with other members of the group at all times and help to promote the group’s safety and fitness goals. \nOutdoor sports and other events we plan can be inherently dangerous and accidents may happen. By participating in any posted event\, you are taking responsibility for your own safety and well-being. The Weekday Trailblazers Meetup Group and its organizers are not trained leaders and we do not confirm the qualifications of any of its members to lead or participate in trips. All participants take full responsibility for their own actions. \nIf you choose to sign up for this or any Weekday Trailblazers Meetup event\, you are releasing the Weekday Trailblazers Meetup Group and its organizers from all liability in case of possible injuries. Your personal safety depends on your own judgment and experience. \nAll participants must be 18 or older or accompanied by a parent or legal guardian.

SUMMARY:Los Padres - Easy Intermediate
DESCRIPTION:3.5 miles\, 600′ gain\, Easy Intermediate\nEasy Option: 2.4 miles\, 285′ gain\, Fit Beginner \nWe enter the Los Padres trail through a spooky oak covered section\, then move through until we come to a dead end. We’ll turn right\, and continue climbing up. We’ll come to another junction\, where we’ll turn right onto the Los Robles trail. \nAfter 500 feet\, we’ll come to a split off to the right. We’ll take this split and continue along the Vista Loop until we come to a bench. Then we’ll start heading down\, and when we come to the “Giants Picnic Table”\, which I call that because its parts are super thick. \nWe’ll stop for a social event and share snacks and drinks for 30-60 minutes\, before continuing down and around for our return. \nEasy Option: In the reverse direction as the rest of the group\, go 350′ to the end of Los Padres Dr.\, left on S. Moorpark Rd. for 1000′. Enter the trail and follow it for about a mile. It will curve left and you will arrive at the social event. \nHike Distance: 3.5 miles\, easy option 2.4 miles.\nGain: 600′\, each option 285′.\nDistribution: Most of the incline well distributed in the first half.\nDifficulty: Easy Intermediate.\nShape: Loop.\nPace: approx. 2.0 mph.\nTrail Type: Fire Road\, Single-Track\, and Double-Track.\nTrail Variations:\nSeveral extended inclines of 1000 steps.\nSeveral steep sections of 300 steps\, but no hands required.\nDuration: 3.5 hours\nDogs: Yes.\nRestrooms: No\nDrinking Fountains: No.\nParking: Free along street. \nWhat to bring: 1 liter of water for every 3 miles.\nHiking shoes/boots\nFlashlight or headlamp.\nSunscreen and/or hat as needed.\nSnacks and/or beverages to share \nHosting \nRoute: The host knows the route. A pic of the route has been posted as a link on this line. \nNavigation: Host memory\, enhanced by GPS navigation as needed. \nHike type: Social.\nWe won’t be hiking at a fast pace because this is a social hike\, not a conditioning hike. There is nothing wrong with stopping\, even if it means every 50 steps. See “How hard is this hike” in the discussion section (LINK). \nStops:\nThe host may designate stopping points to let others catch up. This hike will include an extended stop for a snack and beverage share at the half way point. We will stop at junctions to make sure everybody makes any turns or chooses the correct direction at splits\, else something will be used to mark the direction\, usually a large arrow made of baking soda or sticks. There may not always be a sweeper designated to be the last hiker. \nInteresting Notes\nThese are a couple plants you are likely to see on this hike: \nYucca\nWhite flowers on stalk. Stalk is often missing\, leaving only the spires from which it grows. Stalks are very strong and light\, so they make good walking sticks. Needles on end of spires. Chopped up root can be uses as shampoo or soap. Roasted root can be eaten like a potato. Illegal to remove live stick in CA. \nPronounced with short u. Dried leaves make good tinder. To eat root\, remove skin and core\, boil 15 minutes. Then fry or bake. Flowers are mildly sweet. Adam says they taste like radishes. The fruit is also edible\, but bitter if not ripe. To access fibers: Soak for a month in water\, or\, lightly pound leaves with rock or club\, or\, scrape off skin. Roll between hands\, then pull and separate fibers. Weave into cordage. \nWild Cucumber\nToxic. Boil fruit in water to make spikes easy to remove. Inside is a natural luffa. Tubars (thickened part of a stem\, usually underground\, like the potato) can be crushed and thrown into water to immobilize fish. \nAlmost the entire plant is poisonous. Although wild cucumbers are related to the familiar\, domestic vegetable\, the prickly “cucumbers” consist not of fleshy fruit\, but of two seed chambers containing lacy netting. \nDirections\nLos Padres Trailhead\n15 Los Padres Drive\nThousand Oaks\, CA\, 91361 \nFrom I-101\nWest of CA-23\, I-101\, exit S. Moorpark Rd.\nSouth on Moorpark Rd. north for 1000 ft.\nLeft on Los Padres Dr.\nAfter 200 ft\, trailhead on the right.\nPark on the street. \nFAQ\nHiking Plus Page Links\nDisclaimer / Release of Liability

SUMMARY:Sycamore Canyon Hike from the Ocean
DESCRIPTION:HIKE DETAILS:\nLet’s use our 2024 passes one more time. This Tuesday hike will be a bit gentler. This hike will go from the beach up to the picnic table on the fire road\, approximately 5.5 miles. Most of the hike is exposed\, but hopefully we will have some marine layer. No dogs. \nWe will meet in the Day Use parking lot at Sycamore Canyon Campground. We will start off along the main Sycamore Canyon road and turn up to the fire road where we will climb up to the picnic table. We will then follow the fire road back down to the parking lot\, so out and back. \nDirections: \nWe will be meeting at the Sycamore Canyon Campground and day use parking area on Pacific Coast hwy. This trailhead and parking area is about a mile south from the La Jolla Canyon Parking area where we go to hike the Ray Miller Trail and just across from the campground. \nParking is available in the campground for $12 (or free with a State Parking Permit). There may not be free parking on PCH. \nThere are also restrooms at the day parking lot. \nDISCLAIMER / RELEASE OF LIABILITY \nIMPORTANT\, PLEASE READ BELOW IN ITS ENTIRETY: \nThe hike host is a volunteer and not responsible for the group. SUMMARY:Encinal Canyon to Top of the World ~ Intermediate Hike
DESCRIPTION:Encinal Canyon is named for encina\, the Spanish word for the holm oak\, a lovely Mediterranean tree with holly characteristics. Holm oaks are one of the main trees used to establish truffle orchards\, but we’ll be nosing around the canyon strictly for its beauty. \nThe trail from Encinal is a smooth\, firm\, and well-traveled single track\, swooping and winding with a constant\, gentle slope. We’ll have fabulous views of the coast for much of the way. Close to the top\, we’ll take on the slightly steeper Etz Meloy Motorway\, then the last tenth of a mile is up a seldom-used trail to the isolated peak\, where we’ll both lose and catch our breath with a 360-degree view. \nFrom our perch above it all we’ll see Sandstone Peak to the west\, Simi Valley to the north\, Ladyface and Mt Baldy to the east and the Channel Islands to the south and west. \nThis is a 8 mile out and back hike\, with about 1200′ of elevation gain. \nNOTE: Please review the guidelines to participate in our hikes. Here are some highlights and a link to the guidelines:\nhttps://www.meetup.com/The-Weekday-Trailblazers/about/\nRestrictions apply for your safety and ours:\nDon’t show up unless you’re on the “Attending” list\nNo “Plus Ones” on this hike\nPlan on completing the entire hike at an intermediate pace or please find an alternative hike that better suits your hiking level.\nNo dogs allowed. \nDirections: \nThe parking area is off the north side of Encinal Canyon Road\, almost directly across the street from the Camp 13 fire station & Rattle Snake Road. Park in the large dirt lot\, which is free. \nFrom the 101 Freeway\, turn south on Kanan Rd. Continue 6.2 miles\, then turn right onto Mulholland Hwy. After 0.9 miles\, veer left onto Encinal Canyon Rd. Drive 2.4 miles to the parking area\, on the right. \nFrom the Pacific Coast Highway – From the PCH\, turn up Encinal Canyon Road. Drive 5 miles\, then turn right onto Encinal Cyn Rd. Continue 1.1 miles to the parking area\, on the left. \nDISCLAIMER / RELEASE OF LIABILITY \nThe hike host is a volunteer and not responsible for the group. Safety should be a priority for everyone in the group. Please treat this meet-up as hiking with a group of friends. SUMMARY:First Day Hike 2025
DESCRIPTION:California State Parks has asked me to lead a hike for their annual First Day Hikes. So join us for a picturesque loop hike into movie & TV history in the heart of Malibu Creek State Park. \nOur first stop is Ronald Reagan’s Yearling Row Ranch\, now part of MCSP. During the 1950s\, when Ronald Reagan hosted TV’s “Death Valley Days\,” he wanted a more rural retreat than his home in Pacific Palisades. So he bought a 305-acre ranch in the hills of Malibu as a place to raise thoroughbred horses and dubbed it “Yearling Row.” We will be hiking on trails that Reagan himself built. \nOur next stop will be Century Lake\, the location of the cliff-diving scene from the movie Butch Cassidy and The Sundance Kid and many other movies and TV shows. We’ll take a snack break there before heading into the site of Ape City\, depicted in the 1968 classic Planet of the Apes. \nAfter some monkeying around we’ll head back to the ranch passing Reagan’s pit BBQ where he entertained his Hollywood friends. \nHike will be about 5.5 miles with 1\,000 feet total ascent and is rated MEDIUM. See the HWD Hike Ratings Guide – \nDIRECTIONS \nThe Old Reagan Ranch parking lot is on the Southeast corner of Cornell Rd and Mullholland Hwy \nIMPORTANT \nTrail statistics are approximate. For safety purposes always assume they are underestimated. But don’t be disappointed if they are overestimated. Bring more water and snacks than you think you’ll need. \nTrail descriptions are based on previous hikes. Current conditions are unknown until arrival. Expect the unexpected and plan accordingly. \nThe Organizers and members in this group are not professional leaders\, guides\, or mountaineers. The function of the member or organizer is only to organize the trip. Each person who shows up for a trip/meetup (and their guest or guests) is responsible for his or her own safety. By attending a hike\, or any other event organized by this group\, you are acknowledging that you and any guests that you bring are aware of the risks\, dangers and hazards associated with the activity and freely accept and fully assume all such risks\, dangers and hazards\, and further agree to release and discharge the Organizers\, Members of the Hiking With Dean Meetup Group from and against any and all liability arising from your participation in the group activities per the ASSUMPTION OF RISK AND LIABILITY WAIVER – https://www.meetup.com/localhikers/pages/322667/Liability_Waiver/

SUMMARY:Stair Hike: Under the Banner of Blue Heaven #2 - 4.5 miles
DESCRIPTION:Let’s explore the winding streets of Silver Lake as we discover a bit of Hollywood History by climbing the Music Box Steps\, made famous by the classic comedy film duo\, Laurel and Hardy! While this comedy duo was pre L.A. Dodgers\, in their heyday they would have made our Boys in Blue proud with their silly shenanigans dodging Model T cars and street trains in their futile quest for small business success. Meet at the Bellevue Recreation Center (826 Lucile Ave\, Los Angeles\, CA 90026). Street parking is limited so please arrive early. Good walking shoes\, headlamps/flashlights\, and a liter of water are encouraged. Heavy rain cancels.

SUMMARY:Sagebrush Cantina: Hindsite
DESCRIPTION:Many from this group\, plus other friends\, will attend this event at Sagebrush Cantina. The band playing (Hindsite) puts on a fantastic show\, playing dance\, pop\, r&b/funk\, and hip hop music from the 70’s up to the latest hits. \nThis is one of the best venues I’ve experienced on LA’s west side\, and this is one of the best bands I’ve seen at this venue. Come see a Hollywood quality show for free. Hindsite will have you dancing all night! \nWe’ll be seated either in the outdoor area\, or indoors\, depending on the weather. Seating is tough here\, so even if we don’t all sit together\, we’ll be seeing one another on the dance floor! \nThe band starts at 8p\, but get there an hour earlier and maybe you’ll get a seat with the group. \nSagebrush Cantina\n23527 Calabasas Rd\, Calabasas\, CA 91302\n(818) 222-6062 \nEvents Calendar (Sagebrush Cantina)\nEvents Calendar (Hindsite) \nHiking Plus Page Links
