SUMMARY:Ebikes\, Trendy Restaurant and a Beach walk
DESCRIPTION:BEFORE YOU WILL BE MOVED TO THE GOING LIST\, YOU WILL NEED TO UPDATE YOUR CDH PROFILE (The three questions must be answered with a “yes”) IF YOU HAVE NOT ALREADY DONE SO.NEED HELP:go to: https://wp.me/P9MbG4-hC \nWe’re going to ride some more ebikes in El Segundo\, have lunch at a trendy restaurant and then do a beach hike. \nEBIKES – We’re heading to EBIKES LA (https://www.electricbikesla.com/) to check out what they have. They have a large assortment of ebikes from various manufacturers. \nTRENDY RESTAURANT – We’re going to King Beach Cafe (https://www.playaprovisions.com/spaces) for lunch which is part of Playa Provisions. They also have an ice cream place there too!! \nBEACH HIKE – From the restaurant\, we head 1/2 mile west to the beach and we’ll do a hike there of unknown distance and duration. This is an on the sand beach hike\, so sandals and/or bare feet are the best way to do it. \nIf you have to be somewhere later that day\, don’t commit to this. This event will be over when it’s over. The end time posted above is a wild guess. \nMEETUP TIME\, LOCATION AND DIRECTIONS:Ebikes LA at 209 E El Segundo Blvd | El Segundo\, CA at 10am \nOur 2nd stop is ” King Beach Cafe” at 119 Culver Blvd\, Playa del Rey. It’s about 11 minutes away.https://tinyurl.com/52yxdywtThe restaurant appears to have a parking lot but that may only work for the duration of our meal. There’s a park just north of the restaurant that appears to have a lot of available parking. I’d suggest parking there. \n3rd stop is the beach. “Go West\, young man” (directions provided by Horace Greely) we go west until we can’t. Then we head North and/or South. \nEARLIER MEETUP LOCATION: Those out my way can meet me in Woodland Hills at 8:50 a.m. and take off from there in a car pool. Meet at the corner of Leonora Dr. and Ponce Avenue. Ponce Ave. is the first street east of Fallbrook. We can park on Ponce which is not in front of any homes. We can load the cars up here\, since there isn’t a car shuttle involved on this event. Those that don’t drive can help pay for gas. \nELEVATION GAIN/LOSS: 50 feet \nDISTANCE: less than 5 miles \nTERRAIN: Beach \nEXPERIENCE LEVEL: Beginner \nMY CELL# IS: 805-358-5972

SUMMARY:MidWeek Hike-Las Virgenes Trail to Cheseboro Ridge ~5 mile loop
DESCRIPTION:Approximately 5.0 mile loop. \nPLEASE FOLLOW THE DIRECTIONS IN THE WRITEUP BELOW TO GET TO THE TRAILHEAD. \nThis Loop is about 5 miles long. This hike is rated moderate for its elevation gain and distance. The group hikes between 2.5 and 3.5 mph. If you cannot hike at a minimum of 2.5 mph\, please do not sign up for this hike. \nI recommend this hike for people who are already in shape and want a mid-week conditioning hike. \nFollow the directions to the trailhead as indicated below. \nDrink plenty of water prior to and during the hike. \nNote that we are starting at the Las Virgenes Trailhead on Las Virgenes Road. \n \nIf you want to bring your dog\, it’s fine as long as the pooch is leashed. \nWe will start at the northern end of Las Virgenes Rd and hike to the Cheseboro Ridge Trail. We’ll then proceed up to the Cheseboro Ridge Trail and complete a loop. \nMap:http://www.nps.gov/samo/planyourvisit/upload/Cheeseboro07.pdf \nDirections: To get to trailhead take 101 and exit Las Virgenes Rd. Turn north (away from beach) to end of road. If you are coming up from PCH\, drive up Malibu Canyon to the end (Malibu Cyn changes its name to Las Virgenes Rd). The trailhead is marked clearly. Park on the street. If you can’t park near the trailhead\, just look for space down the street. We’ll wait until you walk to the trailhead. \nParking is free. \n______________________________________________________________________ \nI am a volunteer (i.e. not liable for the group). Safety is a priority for everyone in the group. Think of this as hiking with a group of friends. \nDISCLAIMER / RELEASE OF LIABILITY IMPORTANT\, PLEASE READ BELOW IN ITS ENTIRETY: Outdoor sports and other events we plan are inherently dangerous and accidents may happen. SUMMARY:Corriganville the Back Way Double Loop Lollipop
DESCRIPTION:3.5 miles\, 700′ gain\, easy-intermediate. \nShort option: 2.0 miles\, 500′ gain option. There is an option to shorten this to 2.0 miles and 500′ of gain by skipping the 2nd loop\, which starts from our social event area. The wait would be about 35 minutes for the rest of the group to complete the 2nd loop. \nWe’ll start this hike by parking on the south side of the CA-118 at the Rocky Peak exit. We’ll walk west along the Santa Susana Pass Rd. for about 500 feet\, and directly across from Lilac Ln\, we’ll enter a trail. We’ll move along a relatively flat section from 1/2 mile\, then turn right and make a gradual climb until right before the wildlife tunnel. \nThen we’ll take a set of switchbacks down into Corriganville. We’ll now be in front of a picnic pavilion. We’ll turn right and proceed to loop through the park\, where we’ll pass an outdoor amphitheater\, then make a mild climb to the top of a hill. \nWe’ll turn right\, zig-zag down\, and then make a left to the wide center trail that leads up through the park to its only parking lot. We won’t cross to the lot yet. \nWe’ll follow the trail as it bends to the right until it eventually bends back left and heads into the parking area. We’ll then walk along the side of the lot and head back to the picnic pavilion\, where we’ll have a social event (https://www.meetup.com/Hiking-Plus/messages/boards/thread/50879772). \nAfter the event\, we’ll circle around the front of the pavilion and walk along railroad tracks for 200 yards towards the park lot. Behind a couple small shacks\, we’ll turn left and cross the tracks\, then head onto a trail and take this all the way back to Santa Susana Pass Rd. and then our cars. \nThe park officially closes at sunset\, so we’ll try to start heading back before dark. \nInteresting Notes: \nHere are a couple plants you are sure to see on this hike: \nCalifornia Sagebrush \nAromatic when crushed. AKA\, common sage\, coastal sage. Sunflower family. Cowboys used to ride through it and brush up against the pine-shaped leaves\, coming home with the smell on their clothes and giving rise to the nickname “Cowboy Cologne.” Not a true sage. Can be used as a cooking spice and can be made into a tea. Tear off some needles by running your hand up the stalk and smell the aroma. \nPurple Sage \nGrey-green leaves. Aromatic when crushed. Purple flowers. Aka\, Tobacco Sage\, with mild hallucinogenic properties when smoked. Can be used as a spice or made into a tea. Tea has medicinal affects: Antiviral\, gargle for sore throats\, reduce hay fever symptoms and other drying actions. In the last summer\, fall\, and winter months\, the flowers will have turned brown and the leaves we take on a greyer color. \nDirections:Rocky Peak Exit\, South Side of CA-118Simi Valley\, CA 9306534.268396\, -118.636139 \nFrom the 118Exit 32 Rocky Peak Rd.Park on south of the freeway along Santa Susanna Pass Rd. \nFrom the 101 @ CA-23North CA-23 for 8.4 miles.East I-118 for 14 miles.Exit 32 Rocky Peak Rd.Park on south of the freeway along Santa Susanna Pass Rd. \n \nThe Hike:Distance: 3.5 milesElevation Gain: 700′Difficulty: Easy Intermediate (https://www.meetup.com/Hiking-Plus/messages/boards/thread/50879781).Pace: 2.0 mphDogs: Yes.Restrooms: Yes\, at the picnic pavilion.Drinking Fountains: YesParking: Free\, south side of CA-118Trail: Single Track\, Double Track\, and fire road.Purpose: Social \nWhat to Bring:1-2 liters of water.Snacks and/or beverages to share (https://www.meetup.com/Hiking-Plus/messages/boards/thread/50879772).Hiking shoes preferred\, but athletic shoes will be OK.Flashlight or headlamp. SUMMARY:New Las Virgenes Creek Trail (Overgrown?)
DESCRIPTION:BEFORE YOU WILL BE MOVED TO THE GOING LIST\, YOU WILL NEED TO UPDATE YOUR CDH PROFILE (The three questions must be answered with a “yes”) IF YOU HAVE NOT ALREADY DONE SO.NEED HELP:go to: https://wp.me/P9MbG4-hC \nI will be hiking 4 miles along the relatively new Las Virgenes Creek trail again\, which we did recently as a tribute to Babu Bill. We found the trail\, after all the money and hard work put into building it\, has been neglected since it was opened. However\, at the end of our hike\, we heard workers apparently clearing out the overgrowth with chain saws. For that reason I want to go back and check their progress. This will be perfect for strong beginners that can handle 4 miles with little elevation gain and possibly an overgrown trail again. \nMEETUP LOCATION: Juan Bautista de Anza Park 3701 Lost Hills Rd\, Agoura Hills. SEE SITE BELOW FOR EXACT MEETUP LOCATION:https://www.google.com/maps/place/34%C2%B007’36.6%22N+118%C2%B042’26.3%22W/@34.1268222\,-118.7078598\,237m/data=!3m2!1e3!4b1!4m13!1m6!3m5!1s0x80e820ef88c365f3:0x3fb089908f8e8948!2sJuan+Bautista+de+Anza+Park!8m2!3d34.1267576!4d-118.7079245!3m5!1s0x0:0x0!7e2!8m2!3d34.126821!4d-118.7072905 \nThere are restrooms at the trailhead! \nMEETUP TIME: Ready to hike no later than 8:00 a.m. \nDURATION: 2+ HOURS \nDISTANCE: 4 miles \nELEVATION GAIN: 100 feet \nPACE: Slow pace around 2 mph \nDOGS MUST BE ON LEASHES AT ALL TIMES – NO EXCEPTIONS \nMY CELL# IS: 805-358-5972 \nI received the following message from Wendy Zimmerman:BABU BILL’S OBITUARY \nAttached is a link to Babu Bill’s obituary if you want to share it with our hiking folks. A few people had asked about donations in his memory and the obit includes links for Audubon and COSF. I think those are good choices reflecting Babu’s interests.Remembering the life of William Ossa 1941 – 2021 \nRead William Ossa’s obituary and explore the special moments that made up their life. \nThank you for the help with the celebration of life hikes. Fitting tributes and a send off in a style Babu would appreciate. I’m glad we were able to gather and hike in his honor. \nAt some time in the future\, plan was September/October\, but with rising covid that could be pushed further out\, there will be a contra dance in Santa Barbara sponsored by Babu. Babu can be spotted in several Santa Barbara contra dance videos on Youtube. Admission will be free that night\, his gift to the contra dancing community. I’ll let you know. I think quite a few hikers would enjoy contra dancing. I tell people that if they can walk briskly\, count to 8 and follow directions (listening and obeying directions being the hard part) they can learn to contra dance. Always done with a live band and dances are taught and prompted. Easy for most to learn in a few nights. Introductory lessons given about 1/2 hour before dances start to get newcomers oriented. That is how I first met Babu many years ago. \nHappy trails\, \nWendy

SUMMARY:Bowling and Social Event
DESCRIPTION:We are back! \nSince this adventure started\, we have set ourselves apart. It’s the people and the format of our events. Hiking is fun. Hiking-Plus is fun-Plus! \nThis is Bowling with a Social Event! \n \nPlease be aware there are two Harley’s bowling alleys in Simi Valley. This is the one on Cochran at Stearns. \nYou do not have to bowl to attend this event. Come for the party – watch\, laugh\, and share some snacks and beverages with the group! Please post in the comments if you don’t plan to bowl so we have a good bowler count. \nIn the past\, those that have paid in cash by the event time (5:45p) have been able to bowl\, so we won’t set an RSVP limit. Still\, if you have not indicated in the comments that you aren’t bowling\, I’m going to assume you plan on bowling\, so try not to be no-show or day-of-the-event cancel. \nFeel free to discretely bring snacks and drinks to share. Officially\, nothing from outside is allowed\, but many of us have smuggled in some food and drink. Otherwise\, they are available for purchase at the snack bar. This location has a full bar. \nPlease find us along the right edge when facing the lanes at the event start time. The event host will put together teams\, assign lanes\, and collect cash payment. \nWe have lanes reserved under the name Hiking Plus. They have increased prices\, so we have to as well. \nThe price includes shoes (bring or wear socks). Please bring $21.00 cash. The cost will be $17 unless there are no shows and your lane only has 4 people. In that case\, the cost will be $21.00. \nThis is a fund-raising event to pay the costs of this site over the past 18 months\, yet your cost is still below the regular price. \nAre you any good at bowling? That would be the exception. Most of us are terrible or haven’t bowled since we were kids. This is about having a venue for a social event\, with something inexpensive to do if you want. \n \nBowling EtiquetteBe ready to bowl when it’s your turn\, else someone else may bowl for you to keep the game moving. \nHarley’s Valley Bowl5255 Cochran StreetSimi Valley\, CA 93063(805) 584-2695 \nMany of us may head across the parking lot after bowling\, to “Bao Su a Chinese Cuisine”.

SUMMARY:El Prieto to Brown Mt Trail & Ken Burton Junction
DESCRIPTION:Per Sachika and Carmen A. request. Out and back. Trail is well maintained\, shaded and cooler in the canyon. \nNot for beginners. \nDistance: 6>Elevation Gain: 2086> we will find out \nDirections: \nOn the 210 Freeway from La Canada/Hwy 2\, take the Arroyo/Windsor exit and head north (left). Make an immediate right on Woodbury Rd. Make a left at Lincoln Ave. Drive approx one mile and turn left on W Altadena Ave. Trailhead is at the end of the street (~1/2mi). Street parking can be found past Odyssey School\, possibly between Florecita and Crestford Dr. \nFrom Pasadena/110 Fwy/605 Fwy\, exit at Lincoln Ave. Go north (right) for about a mile and a half. Turn left on W Altadena Ave and follow the directions above from there. \n************************** \nPLEASE – Know your limits and abilities. Bring snacks and drink plenty of liquids when hiking. Check weather conditions and dress accordingly and be aware of your surroundings at all times. Watching out for poison oak\, snakes\, ticks\, uneven footing\, spectacular views\, beautiful fauna all while interacting with awesome (usually) fellow hikers can be extremely hazardous\, rewarding and fun. \nThe Farzan Rule: Posted hike times are the time the hike starts or we leave from a posted shuttle location. I’m aware other Meetup groups offer a grace period for late arrivals; we don’t. It’s your responsibility to know the location of the meeting spot and be there and ready to participate at the posted time. If you have any concerns about the directions feel free to contact the organizer of the event\, preferably in advance of the event and not at the start time. I’m of the opinion that it’s not fair to delay an event when the majority of attendees have arrived on-time. (so named after a conversation I had with a certain un-named member) \nVHC HIKE RATING SCALE \nRating a hike is subjective\, meaning the difficulty of a hike will be in direct relation to how often you hike and the type of hike you prefer. Keep in mind that any hike can have the following: un-even hiking surfaces\, various obstructions\, water and/or water crossings or bouldering and/or rock hopping. A great hike will have all of these! \n1 – A long walk \n2 – 4 mile hike w/little elevation gain \n3 – 5 mile hike w/up to 1000 ft. elevation gain \n4 – 5+ mile hike w/up to 1500 ft. elevation gain (heart rate increases at times) \n5 – 7+ mile hike w/over 1500 ft. elevation gain (heart rate increasing even more at times) \n6 – 7+ mile hike w/over 2000 ft. elevation gain (at times you might be trying to remember how to perform CPR) \n7 – 5+ mile hike w/over 2000 ft. elevation gain (at times you might be muttering expletives to yourself) \n8 – 10+ mile hike w/over 3500 ft. elevation gain (at times you might be angry with the hike leader) \n9 – 10+ mile hike w/over 5000 ft. elevation gain (at times you might be thinking of reporting the hike leader to the authorities) \n10 – Use your imagination \nClass 3 Scrambling: Scrambling or un-roped climbing. You must use your hands at times to hold the terrain or find your route. This may be caused by a combination of boulders\, steepness and extreme terrain. Some Class 3 routes have ropes in place for assistance. \nDISCLAIMER / RELEASE OF LIABILITY \nIMPORTANT\, PLEASE READ BELOW IN ITS ENTIRETY: \nI am a volunteer (i.e. not liable for the group). Safety is a priority for everyone in the group. Think of this as hiking with a group of friends. \nOutdoor sports and other events we plan can be inherently dangerous and accidents may happen. By participating in any posted event\, you’re taking responsibility for your own safety and well-being. The VHC Meetup Group and its organizers are not trained leaders and we do not confirm the qualifications of any of its members to lead or participate in trips. All participants take full responsibility for their own actions. SUMMARY:Sage Ranch Lollipop - Fit Beginner
DESCRIPTION:Note the time change. This park closes at sunset\, so we try to get out by then. For this reason\, on weekdays\, I only schedule this in the summer when sunset is late. \nFree parking is limited. Carpooling recommended. \nAs of June 10 2021\, the first part of the clockwise loop was closed\, but we found a new and cooler route with a perfect place for a snack-share\, complete with picnic table. \nWe’ll head up the ramp and begin the hike counter-clockwise. This ramp will be the only significant incline\, but is still suitable for fit beginners It is paved\, runs 1/4 mile\, and about 125′ of gain. \nAs we continue\, there will be a trail junction heading to the right and behind the rocks. For this hike\, we won’t follow it and go up on the rocks to a secret area where the rock has been carved out\, because the park closes at sunset. \nWe’ll continue on the main trail and follow it the rest of the way around. When we come to a sign that says “detour” because the path forward is closed\, we’ll take the detour. \nShortly after the detour starts\, there will be a picnic table to the right. We’ll stop there for a social event. Please bring snacks and drink to share. \nThis time of year\, there can be insects. Long pants and your preferred bug spray are recommended. \nIt is a steady climb up most of the way back\, but fit beginners can handle it. It will eventually lead us back to the top parking lot. From there\, we’ll take the asphalt path and down to our cars. \nNote that we have been scolded in the past by the ranger for being on the trail after dark here\, so we’ll try to get back to our cars by dark. \nWe’ll stop whenever necessary to regroup. \nOther than what was mentioned earlier in this description\, all of the gain is distributed with no difficult or extended elevation climbs. This hike has all the look and feel you would expect of a mountain hike in this area. Most of the walk is a well maintained rocky trail. \nThis takes us through Sage Ranch Park\, with interesting rock formations all around\, a very cool overlook onto the valley at the half way point\, and even an overlook onto part of the old Santa Suzanna nuclear test facility. \nAbout the parking: \nThere are two spots to park. The first (where we will meet)\, is right at the entrance along the west edge of Black Canyon Rd. This is a free gravel lot\, but parking is limited to about 30 cars. \nIf the free lots gets filled\, continue about 500′ west up a steep incline\, where there is another lot with payment required via self-pay envelopes. In early 2018\, it was $5. If you plan on parking in this lot\, bring exact change. \nFor this hike\, we’ll walk up to this lot\, so you can wait there if you don’t want to make the climb from the lower lot to the upper lot. \nThe park is officially open from sunrise to sunset. Prior postings for this hike\, had this warning: If you do park in the pay lot\, be sure you return before sunset\, else risk a ticket or being locked in by a ranger. \nInteresting Notes: \nHere are a couple plants you are sure to see on this hike: \nBlack Sage \nMultiple brown buttons going up the top of the stalk\, that may have white flowers. Green leaves. Purple or white flowers that are dark brown as they dry on the plant. Squish the leaves and smell. \nA rare and sought after Black sage honey is also made from the honey of bees that pollinate the Black sage plant. Black sage is utilized in the culinary world as an aromatic and flavorful herb. It can be used in recipes wherever traditional sage is called for\, however keep in mind that foraged Black sage has a much stronger flavor than that of traditional store bought sage. \nIts flavor marries well with winter squashes\, brown butter\, poultry\, venison\, pears\, cheese\, potatoes and other herbs such as rosemary and thyme. Use fresh in a variety of different preparations or leaves can be dried and stored for future use as a dried herb. Black sage was used traditionally by Native Americans known as the Chumash people to form an herbal soak for the bath to be used in the treatment of bodily pain\, specifically for the feet and lower legs. \nYerba SantaSaint Herb\, Holy Plant\, Mountain Balm. \nThe Spanish who came to early California were so impressed with the plant that they gave it the name Yerba Santa. \nLeaves were chewed to relieve dry mouth. Leaves were smoked or chewed to relieve asthma\, coughs\, colds\, headaches\, and stomachaches. Infusions of Yerba Santa leaves and flowers were used to treat fevers\, coughs\, colds\, stomachaches\, asthma\, rheumatism pleurisy\, chronic bronchitis\, tuberculosis\, and to purify the blood. Heated leaves were placed on the forehead to relieve headaches and other aches and sores. \nThe sticky leaves stay in place upon the skin. SUMMARY:Camarillo parks walkabout
DESCRIPTION:BEFORE YOU WILL BE MOVED TO THE GOING LIST\, YOU WILL NEED TO UPDATE YOUR CDH PROFILE (The three questions must be answered with a “yes”) IF YOU HAVE NOT ALREADY DONE SO.NEED HELP:go to: https://wp.me/P9MbG4-hC \nWere continuing our series of easy Friday hikes for CDH’s beginners as we step it up each week in order to eventually do easy intermediate hikes. It’s also a great way to get started. \nThere are three parks in Camarillo (Mission Oaks Dog Park\, Mission Oaks Park and Heritage Park) and Mission Oaks Tree Walk that we can walkabout. SUMMARY:Joshua Tree National Park: Hiking and Shooting the Milky Way
DESCRIPTION:Joshua Tree NP is a regular VHC destination. And I was able to reserve a group campsite good for 20 people with parking for 8 cars. But due to the threat of Covid-19\, I will be limiting attendance to just 10 people. \nFirst of all\, I have only done JTNP twice. So\, I do not plan to lead a hike because I have such a poor sense of direction. Honestly\, I’ve been lost many times while travelling outside of the country. And I consider it part of the fun. But not in JTNP. People die there when they get lost. So\, if you want to hike\, I will just follow. \nI reserved the campsite primarily because I want to shoot the Milky Way on August 7\, 2021 when illumination is at 0%. On that day\, there’s a 4:24-hr. window to shoot the galaxy\, from 21:24 to 1:48. I will be bringing very basic equipment: an old full frame camera (Canon 5D MKII with a 14mm F2.8 manual lens for landscape astrophotography)\, an old crop sensor camera (Canon 200D with a 135mm F2 manual lens for deep-sky astrophotography) and a star tracker. If interested\, you can join me. \nWhat: Astrophotography\, Bouldering\, Camping & Hiking \nWhen: Friday August 6th – Sunday August 8th (2 nights of camping) \nWhere: Joshua Tree NP (Indian Cove Campground); Campsite GO2 \nDay 1 Friday – Check-in at Indian Cove Campground anytime after 12 noon. \nDay 2 Saturday – Breakfast\, lunch on the trail\, then dinner back in the campground. \nDay 3 Sunday – Breakfast\, lunch on the trail\, dinner back in camp or head home. \nIndian Cove is not inside Joshua Tree NP proper. If you camped with VHC before\, there is no JT entrance fees. There are no entrance fees to get into this campground. Indian Cove\, while primitive\, is about as nice as you can get. Bathrooms are readily available and well maintained as are trash facilities. There is no potable water at the campground. The closest water is available at the usually unmanned visitors center when entering the campground. \nFires are okay so if you can contribute firewood that would be helpful. \nDirections \nFrom Los Angeles head towards Palm Springs via the 10 fwy. Stay on the 10\, not the 111\, and shortly after White Water take the 62 N towards Yucca Valley & Twenty Nine Palms. Read below. \nFrom the Antelope Valley you could head to the area via Apple Valley and the 18\, eventually connecting with the 247 in the Lucerne Valley area. Take the 247 to the 62 and go left. Read below. \nTo Joshua Tree NP \nOn the 62 the main entrance into Joshua Tree for this area is from Park Blvd. It could be another 20-30 minutes from the intersection of the 62 and Park Blvd until we reach any of the various hiking trails inside the park. \nTo Indian Cove \nContinue on the 62 well past Park Blvd. towards Twenty Nine Palms. Before entering Twenty Nine Palms you’ll turn right on Indian Cove Rd. This area is well signed. You will shortly be making a right turn to the group campsites and our sites are near the end at the turn around. For any last minute necessities there will be a Stater Bros. between Park and Indian Cove. The group sites are before the individual sites. \nGPSers can use 69087 29 Palms Hwy\, Twenty Nine Palms\, CA 92277. This is where Indian Cove Rd is. \n*********************************** \nPLEASE – Know your limits and abilities. \nPLEASE – Hopefully\, by then all of us would have been vaccinated. But we will still strictly observe Covid-19 prevention measures. \nDISCLAIMER / RELEASE OF LIABILITY \nI am a volunteer (i.e. not liable for the group). If you choose to sign up for any VHC Meetup events\, you are releasing the VHC Meetup Group and it’s organizers from all liability in case of possible injuries as stated in paragraph 6.2 of the Meetup “Terms of Service” located on the bottom of the Meetup website. Your personal safety depends on your own judgment and experience.

First\, we’ll be taking a secret passage into the forbidden zone of San Nicholas Canyon and explore some old trails. We’ll hike this until we reach the Hub Connector and then head west to Eagle Rock. We’ll sit on Eagle Rock and snack while we take in the views. \nAfter enjoying our rest\, we’ll hike back to Mulholland via the Garapito and Bent Arrow Trails. Sorry\, but no dogs are allowed on this hike as we will be in a state park most of the time. \nHiking Difficulty:Moderate to strenuous for distance \nBring water\, snacks\, hat and sturdy sneakers or hiking shoes. \nIf you want to read more about this area click on the link below and preview this book. Go to page 65 and read about San Fernando Valley to the Sea. Our hike is the beginning part of this same one. It’s going all the way to Will Rogers State Park. We’ll do that one next time. http://books.google.com/books?id=KWfrmJ1DzPQC&pg=PT80&lpg=PT80&dq=caballero+canyon+to+mulholland \nHike Duration: I estimate that the hike will take at most 5 hours. We should be back to the cars by around 12:30. \nDirections to the Caballero Canyon Trailhead: Meet at the Caballero Canyon trailhead on Reseda Bl. From the 101 Freeway\, exit at Reseda Blvd and turn south. Drive for about 2.2 miles. There is parking on both sides of the street; the trailhead is on the east side of Reseda Blvd. across the street from Braemar Country club. The trailhead is clearly marked with a big sign. Parking on street is OK. Parking is free. \nFrom the EAST: Take the 101 Freeway West/North toward Ventura. Exit at Reseda Blvd. Turn LEFT (toward “Tarzana”) onto Reseda\, go under the freeway bridge\, cross Burbank and Ventura Boulevards. Continue on Reseda uphill for approximately 2.2 miles. \nFrom the WEST: Take the 101 Freeway South/East toward Los Angeles. Exit at Reseda Boulevard. Turn RIGHT (toward “Tarzana”) onto Reseda\, cross Burbank and Ventura Boulevards. Continue on Reseda for approximately 2.2 miles \n________________________________________________________________________ \nI am a volunteer (i.e. not liable for the group). Safety is a priority for everyone in the group. Think of this as hiking with a group of friends. \nDISCLAIMER / RELEASE OF LIABILITY \nIMPORTANT\, PLEASE READ BELOW IN ITS ENTIRETY: Outdoor sports and other events we plan are inherently dangerous and accidents may happen. The grade is real gradual but enough to get your heart rate up. There is shade but only through sections so we plan to start on time and be out before it gets to hot. We will be following the AllTrails map from start to finish so I attached the link for directions\, pics\, and stats https://www.alltrails.com/trail/us/california/challenger-open-space-loop-trail \nTrail loopMiles 5.2Rated moderateElevation Gain 918 ftDogs allowed (be cautious of the heat)Parking is a lot and free \nWe will always follow Jim’s Golden Rules:1) Hike your own hike2) Please stop at every junction and split to wait for others to catch up \nPlease remember to bring all essentials you’ll need for a hike \nAnd last….The Organizer\, Co Organizer\, Assistant Organizers and Event hosts in this group are not professional guides.
