SUMMARY:Eagle Rock the Hard (and Most Scenic) Way - Topanga State Park
DESCRIPTION:Eagle Rock\, the most impressive landmark in all of Topanga State Park\, will afford us an airy perch overlooking the upper watershed of Santa Ynez Canyon and the ocean beyond. We will snack and explore on this impressive sandstone rock covered with crevices and caves. Our trip to the rock will traverse a seldom used trail across a large meadow\, through tall chaparral and a shady oak forest and up along Cheney Ridge.  We’ll be going a different route than most of you veterans have used so be prepared for some pleasant surprises. We’ll start in Trippet Ranch parking lot and end on Entrada Rd for a loop. \nHere is a slide show with photos from previous hikes just like this one \n[av_video src=’https://youtu.be/3Mgc9b8aImc’ mobile_image=” attachment=” attachment_size=” format=’16-9′ width=’16’ height=’9′ conditional_play=” av_uid=’av-kkjvft’ custom_class=”] \n  \n  \nBring camera\, plenty of water and snacks \nHike is about 5.5 miles with 1200 ft elevation gain \nBring a sack lunch and we’ll take an extended break on Eagle Rock — we’ll make a picnic out of it! \nAnd if you are still hungry\, post-hike brunch/lunch is at the Canyon Bistro \nDirections\nFrom Topanga Canyon Boulevard\, turn east on Entrada Road; that’s to the left if you are coming from the San Fernando Valley. Follow Entrada Road by turning left at every opportunity until you arrive at Topanga State Park. \nPark on street before the last left turn (and walk a couple blocks) or pay the iron ranger in the park ($15?). If you park on street be sure that your left wheels are inside the white line. Note parking restrictions. We’ll meet by at the benches by bathrooms. \nThe official hike will end on the street outside of pay area. \nThe Organizers and members of Hiking With Dean are not professional leaders\, guides\, or mountaineers. The function of the member or organizer is only to organize the trip. Each person who shows up for a trip/meetup (and their guest or guests) is responsible for his or her own safety. It is one of the region’s premiere locations to watch a Western sunset. \nHere are some pics from previous excursions – click to enlarge\n[/av_textblock] \n[av_gallery ids=’46798\,46799\,46800\,46801\,46802\,46769\,46771\,46772\,46773\,46774\,46775\,46776\,46777\,46778\,46779\,46780\,46781\,46782\,46783\,46784\,46785\,46787\,46788\,46789\,46790\,46791\,46792\,46793\,46794\,46795\,46796\,46797\,46803\,46804\,46805\,46806\,46807′ style=’thumbnails’ preview_size=’portfolio’ crop_big_preview_thumbnail=’avia-gallery-big-crop-thumb’ thumb_size=’square’ columns=’10’ imagelink=’lightbox’ lazyload=’animations_off’ av_uid=’av-uv1zo7′ custom_class=” admin_preview_bg=”] \n  \n[av_textblock size=” font_color=” color=” av-desktop-hide=” av-medium-hide=” av-small-hide=” av-mini-hide=” av-medium-font-size=” av-small-font-size=” av-mini-font-size=” av_uid=’av-1gc37iv’]\nThis is an easy-to-moderate 5-mile loop with 600 feet of net elevation gain (about 750 total) makes for an excellent hike along and around Mandeville Canyon and its ridges. \nPlease no white flashlights\, headlamps\, etc. If you want to bring some light (not required/optional) use a green or red light. Leo Carrillo served on the California Beach and Parks commission for eighteen years\, and was instrumental in the state’s acquisition of the Hearst property at San Simeon and other large tracts of coastal parkland. \nHe was related by blood and marriage to a long line of distinguished original Californians.  Leo’s father\, Don Juan Carrillo\, was the first mayor of Santa Monica in 1890. His great-grandfather was one of the last Mexican governors of California; his great-uncle José Antonio Carrillo was the Mexican land grant grantee of Rancho Las Posas in 1834\, in present day Ventura County\, and the Island of Santa Rosa of the Channel Islands. \nLeo’s greatest fame came from his portrayal of Pancho\, the sidekick to Duncan Renaldo’s Cisco Kid\, an early 1950’s TV series. Click here for a list of Leo Carrillo movies. He toured the world as the state’s official Ambassador of Good Will. Governor Edmund G. Brown called Leo “Mr. California.” \nHis book on the history of California is a classic \n\n\n \n \n \n	\n The California I Love - Hardcover ( pages)\n By Carrillo\, Leo (Author)\n \n \n Price: -- As of: 2025/08/28 3:00 pm - Details×Product prices and availability are accurate as of the date/time indicated and are subject to change. SUMMARY:From the Sea to the Real Mesa Peak
DESCRIPTION:View the hike report\n \n \nMany hiking groups promise to take you to Mesa Peak but they never do. That’s because they have confused their peaks and take you to the wrong one. So come along with us to the real Mesa Peak! \nOur hike will begin at the beach in Corral Canyon\, the last undeveloped coastal canyon in Los Angeles County that flows freely to the ocean. We will then leave Corral Canyon for my “secret trail” through pristine wilderness to the Puerco Canyon watershed divide that provides spectacular ocean and mountain views. \n \n \nWe’ll take a snack break on Mesa Peak (elev 1\,844 ft) \n \nHike is about 8 miles with over 1800 ft elevation gain in the first 4 miles. Its out and back with two interweaving loops. \nPost hike lunch will be at Malibu Seafood (http://www.malibuseafood.com/) – right at the trailhead. \n🍹🍷🍺They allow you to bring your own beverage\, alcohol included \n \n*************************************************************** \nThere is street parking on PCH. SUMMARY:Buck Moon Hike on Mt. Basura - Las Virgenes Highlands
DESCRIPTION:Tired of the same old full moon hike? Then this one is for you. It will be the first time we have gone to Mt Basura in the evening. Between Upper Las Virgenes and Cheseboro Canyons is the site of “Mt Basura” —  my name for the Calabasas Landfill. Our destination is a small peak overlooking the landfill with views of Calabasas and Agoura beyond. \n[av_gallery ids=’51529\,51530\,51532\,51533\,51534\,51537\,51531′ style=’thumbnails’ preview_size=’portfolio’ crop_big_preview_thumbnail=’avia-gallery-big-crop-thumb’ thumb_size=’portfolio’ columns=’3′ imagelink=’lightbox’ lazyload=’animations_off’ av_uid=’av-qi8iqw’ custom_class=” admin_preview_bg=”] \nBring drink and light snacks to share. I’ll bring some cold white wine.\nOur usual hikes to Mt Basura are about 8-9 miles. I have created a shorter option of about 5.5 miles with about 600′ net elevation gain. The trails are clear and wide — perfect for a moonlit hike. \nNo white lights allowed on hike. Green and/or red lights are ok. If you don’t have one\, that’s ok too — the full moon will provide enough light.  Get one of these and stuff it into your backpack for future night hikes.\n\n\n\n\n\n\nMOUNTAINTOP 22L Unisex Hiking/Camping BackpackNot available\n View on Amazon\n\n\n\n\nTETON Sports Explorer 4000 Internal Frame Backpack...Not available\n View on Amazon\n\n\nThe Full Moon in July is the Buck Moon\, named after the new antlers that emerge from a buck’s forehead around this time of the year. It is also called Thunder Moon\, Hay Moon\, and Wort Moon. \nSunset 8:04 pm\nMoon rise 8:13 pm \nPark near the north end of Las Virgenes Rd. Arrive early to secure your spot. Hike starts promptly at 7pm

SUMMARY:🐐 Chivo Canyon - Las Llajas Canyon Loop
DESCRIPTION:[av_notification title=’Trail Update’ icon_select=’no’ icon=’ue83f’ font=’entypo-fontello’ color=’orange’ border=’solid’ custom_bg=’#444444′ custom_font=’#ffffff’ size=’large’ close_btn=” cookie_lifetime=’60’ av_uid=’av-sqyudk’ custom_class=” admin_preview_bg=”]\nI have been informed that there is a new (passable) fence and no trespassing sign in Chivo Canyon. The sign points in the same direction we are hiking so we will be exiting the area at this point. The sign is a little over half-way into the hike. SUMMARY:Evening Hike: Natoma Loop and a Little More
DESCRIPTION:Natoma Loop Trail is a 1.7 mile lightly trafficked loop trail located in Woodland Hills. But anything less than a couple miles is not worth getting up for so we’ll extend the loop a bit for a distance of 3.5-4 miles with easy to moderate elevation gain. \nNo white lights allowed on hike. Green and/or red lights are ok. If you don’t have one\, that’s ok too — the full moon will provide enough light.  Get one of these and stuff it into your backpack for future night hikes.\n\n\n\n\n23% savings\n\nEverBrite Headlamp - 300 Lumens Headlight with Red...$17.99 $13.91\n View on Amazon\n\n\n13% savings\n\nEverBrite Rechargeable Headlamp - 350 Lumens Headl...$15.98 $13.90\n View on Amazon\n\n\n  \nIt will be a very warm evening but at least the sun won’t be beating down on us while we watch it set. SUMMARY:Journey to the Center of the City - Franklin Canyon
DESCRIPTION:[vc_row][vc_column][vc_column_text]This HDW original is a classic. On this 6-7 mile hike I will take you through Franklin Canyon and then a bit off-trail to the “planar” center of Los Angeles. It will make a great photo opp. There will be about 1200 ft of  total ascent. \nFranklin Canyon Park is one of the very few places in LA with a greenbelt filled with pines\, sycamore\, eucalyptus and cedars\, most notably the Atlas Cedar and mature Coast Redwoods that are a rare site in most big cities. \nHighlights along the way to the center of the city: \nFranklin Canyon Lake: the location where we see Opie skipping a rock in the water during the opening credits of The Andy Griffith Show and Capt. Kirk falling in love with an Indian maiden on Star Trek. \n \n  \n\nThe Doheny House: The family of oil baron Edward L. Doheny used the canyon as a summer retreat and a place to graze and water their cattle. The Doheny family built a Spanish style home here in 1935. \n \nHeavenly Pond: is a small duck pond located to the west of the Franklin Canyon Lake \n \nBring snacks and a quart of water. \nHere are some scenes from some popular TV shows and movies filmed at Franklin Canyon. Do you recognize any?\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n  \nFor you music lovers\, here are a couple of albums covers photographed in Franklin Canyon:\n\n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n\n  \nDirections – Parking is Free\nSee also http://www.meetup.com/localhikers/messages/boards/thread/48433782 \nFrom West Los Angeles: \nHead north on Beverly Drive following signs to Coldwater Canyon. Turn left on Coldwater/Beverly Drive\, and turn left again on Beverly Drive\, at Fire Station No. 2. The third right is Franklin Canyon Drive. Continue through the residential area to park entrance. At the intersection of Franklin Canyon Drive and Lake Drive turn right onto Lake and head toward the end of Lake Dr to parking lot next to large grass lawn. \n(If you are coming down Sunset from east of Beverly Dr its probably easier to take Rexford to Beverly) \nFrom the San Fernando Valley: \nTake the 101 to Coldwater Canyon Boulevard. Head south to the intersection of Coldwater Canyon and Mulholland Drive. Make a 90 degree right turn onto Franklin Canyon Drive just before Coldwater merges into Mulholland Dr.  Road signs read “Road Closed 800 Feet” “Sunset to Sunrise”; this is the park entrance. Do NOT make a U-turn as this will bring you onto Mulholland Drive instead of Franklin Canyon. Stay on paved surface\, drive past the Outdoor Classroom/Nature Center\, and continue south of the lake for 1.5 miles\, bearing left onto Lake Dr at stop sign\, and head toward the end of Lake Dr to large parking lot next to large grass lawn \n[av_notification title=’Attention!’ icon_select=’yes’ icon=’ue83e’ font=’entypo-fontello’ color=’green’ border=” custom_bg=’#444444′ custom_font=’#ffffff’ size=’large’ close_btn=” cookie_lifetime=’60’ av_uid=’av-mjtnzh’ custom_class=” admin_preview_bg=”]\nYou will drive 0.6 mi past the sign for “Franklin Canyon Ranch” then 0.3 mile past the point marked 2300 Lake Dr  to the large parking lot on the left\n[/av_notification] \n \nHere is an aerial view of parking lot and trail head. Note the bathrooms in middle-right. We’ll be starting on the trail you see cutting across the grass \n[av_image src=’https://hwdmedia.s3.us-west-1.amazonaws.com/wp-content/uploads/2019/07/28195512/Pasted-scaled.jpg’ attachment=’53226′ attachment_size=’large’ align=’center’ styling=’no-styling’ hover=’av-hover-grow’ link=” target=” caption=” font_size=” appearance=” overlay_opacity=’0.4′ overlay_color=’#000000′ overlay_text_color=’#ffffff’ copyright=” animation=’no-animation’ av_uid=’av-lkksz1′ custom_class=” admin_preview_bg=”][/av_image][/vc_column_text][/vc_column][/vc_row]

SUMMARY:Secret Staircases of Rustic Canyon + Murphy Ranch
DESCRIPTION:[vc_row][vc_column][vc_column_text] \nA hidden staircase\, the longest public staircase in Los Angeles\, drops 24 stories into the middle of lush Rustic Canyon. \n  \nThere are actually two staircases with over 500 steps — each! We’ll use the longest one to climb our way out of Rustic Canyon toward the end of our loop. \nHere are some photos from previous hikes. Click on pic to enlarge\n[vc_row][vc_column][vc_gallery type=”image_grid” images=”53608\,53607\,53606\,53605\,53604\,53603\,53602\,53601\,53600\,53599\,53598\,53597\,53596\,53595\,53594\,53593\,53592\,53591\,53590\,53589\,53588\,53587\,53586\,53585\,53584\,53583\,53582\,53581\,53580\,53579\,53578\,53577\,53576\,53575\,53574\,53573\,53572\,53571\,53570\,53569\,53568\,53567\,53566\,53565\,53564\,53563\,53562\,53561\,53560\,53559\,53558\,53557\,53556\,53555\,53554\,53553\,53552\,53551\,53550\,53549\,53548\,53547\,53546\,53545″][/vc_column][/vc_row] \n  \nRiddle\nWhat does the inventor of the photobooth\, The Beach Boys\, a bunch of WWII-era NAZIs and Charlie Manson have in common? Answer will be revealed during hike! \nI will combine a 6-mile hike with the stairs taking in Rustic and Sullivan Canyons by way of little known trails creating a loop with about 1\,100 ft total ascent. Along the way we’ll visit Murphy Ranch\, a 1930s hideout where\, according to urban myth\, Third Reich sympathizers could sequester themselves until German rule had been established in the USA \n\n\n  \nDirections to Trailhead\nFrom Sunset Blvd\, 3 miles west of the 405\, turn north at the light onto Capri Drive. After 1/3 mile continue through the traffic circle\, remaining on Capri Drive for another 1/3 mile until it comes to and end at Casale Road. Sullivan Ridge Fire road begins to the left but do not turn left on Casale Rd. Find street parking to the right or on an adjacent roads below. \nAfter you park\, walk to the corner of Capri Dr and Casale Rd. SUMMARY:Easy Full Moon Hike - Santa Maria Canyon - Summer Hill Ranch Loop
DESCRIPTION:We’ll enjoy a great “lollipop” outing in the northeastern corner of Topanga State Park starting at the Viewridge Trailhead for Santa Maria Canyon. We’ll connect up with The Summer Hill Ranch Trail — a short and easy loop that curves around a low-rising hill dotted with coastal live oak trees. \nHighlights during this stroll through a wooded canyon include ocean views and a sturdy bridge that will take us across Santa Maria Canyon. After crossing the bridge we’ll take Summer Hill Ranch trail to the Canyon Overlook. Here\, either at a picnic table or atop a sandstone outcrop\, we’ll enjoy a potluck party with excellent views of Topanga Canyon’s trademark geology and of Santa Maria Canyon. There are caves and crevices to explore too! \nSo bring some snacks and drink to share under the full moon.\nHere is a slide show from this hike last  December: \n \nHike will be about 3 miles with 800 ft total ascent. Its an upside down hike so it will be mostly downhill while our packs are full. \nNO WHITE LIGHTS – Red and Green lights only. If you don’t have one you can piggy-back off of someone else’s. Here are some recommendations:\n\n\n\n\n23% savings\n\nEverBrite Headlamp - 300 Lumens Headlight with Red...$17.99 $13.91\n View on Amazon\n\n\n13% savings\n\nEverBrite Rechargeable Headlamp - 350 Lumens Headl...$15.98 $13.90\n View on Amazon\n\n\nSunset: 7:41\nMoonrise: 8:11 \nDirections\nFrom Highway 101: drive south on Topanga Canyon Blvd for 3.7 miles. Turn left on Viewridge and drive 0.5 miles to the end of the road. \nFrom Pacific Coast Highway: head north on Topanga Canyon Blvd. for 9 miles and turn right on Viewridge. \nPark by end of street. There is plenty of street parking \nThe Organizers and members in this group are not professional leaders\, guides\, or mountaineers. SUMMARY:Hiking with Mark E: Grasslands Trail to Century Lake & the Rock Pool
DESCRIPTION:Take a walk in the park with Mark\, Malibu Creek State Park\, that is. We’ll start on the Grassland Trail off of Mulholland Hwy and head south on a scenic stroll over rolling hills and through open fields of grain. \nOur first destination is picturesque Century Lake. Ducks\, coots\, and herons frequent the lake\, their squalling and callings reverberating off the weathered\, honeycombed cliffs rising from the lake’s far shore. Redwing blackbirds flit among the cattails and rushes. The famous diving scene from Butch Cassidy and the Sundance Kid was filmed here. \n\n\nNext\, we’ll depart the shaded shores of Century Lake and head out to our final destination: The Rock Pool\, a placid stretch of water framed by volcanic cliffs. Cliff divers and rock climbers will provide the entertainment. This generically wild-looking site has served as a backdrop for outdoor sequences filmed for Planet of the Apes\, South Pacific\, Tarzan\, Swiss Family Robinson\, and many other productions. \nHike will be an easy 5 miles with 500 ft elevation gain. Suitable for fit beginners \nDIRECTIONS \nTrail head and free street parking on Mullholland Hwy\, 0.2 mi west of Las Virgenes Cyn Rd

SUMMARY:Franklin Trail - Carpinteria
DESCRIPTION:At over 100 years old\, the Franklin Trail is one of the oldest trails in Carpinteria. It closed back in the 1970s because ranchers worried people could carry avocado root rot to their crops. Through much work among government agencies\, the Santa Barbara Land Trust and volunteers\, most of the trail has recently re-opened \nOur hike begins in an urban setting at Carpinteria High School with a steady climb up Franklin Canyon. After a couple miles and 850 ft up we arrive at a prime spot with spectacular vistas of Carpinteria\, Santa Barbara\, and the Channel Islands. Then its three more miles of hiking fire roads\, ranch roads\, with the trail moving up-and-down into wild areas and delivering us into the Los Padres National Forest at 1\,703 feet. We return the same way we came up. Round trip is about 10 miles with 2\,000 ft total ascent. \nHere are some photos from the trail. SUMMARY:🥂 Night Hike - Serrania Ridge to the Water Tank 🍻
DESCRIPTION:Our hike begins at Serrania Ridge\, a pocket of parkland on the suburban edge of Woodland Hills. The ridge’s name—and its geography—seem to be in limbo. Serrania Ridge is also called Woodland Ridge. Is it a part of the Santa Monica Mountains? Or is it a part of Chalk Hill to the northeast? \nWe can contemplate these questions as we roller-coaster up and down–mostly up–partaking views of the Santa Monica mountains rising before us\, Calabasas hills to the right of us\, Chalk Hill to the left of us and the west San Fernando Valley behind us. After about 1 mile we cross dirt Mulholland and continue on a steep trail to the top of the ridge where we’ll turn onto a service road and head up to the water tank. \n🍷🥨Bring snack and drinks to share \nNO WHITE LIGHTS – Red and Green lights only. If you don’t have one you can piggy-back off of someone else’s. Here are some recommendations:\n\n\n\n\n\n\nMOUNTAINTOP 22L Unisex Hiking/Camping BackpackNot available\n View on Amazon\n\n\n\n\nTETON Sports Explorer 4000 Internal Frame Backpack...Not available\n View on Amazon\n\n\nHike is a 3.7-mile lollipop with about 930 ft total ascent.  No white lights allowed. Bring a green or red headlamp/light if you have one. If you don’t you can piggy back off mine and the others’ \n \nSunset: 7:21 PM \nDirections\nFrom the 101 Freeway\, take the De Soto exit and head south for 0.7 miles. On the way\, De Soto becomes Serrania Avenue. Bear left onto Wells Drive and the park will be almost immediately on your right. \nFacilities are available at the trail head (but may be locked?).

SUMMARY:Labor Day VIP Hike - Malibu
DESCRIPTION:[vc_row][vc_column][vc_column_text]We’ll be hiking along one of our secret trails on the eastern ridge of upper Zuma Canyon. I haven’t been there since before the Woolsey fire and It was completely burned (along with the nearby connecting trails). It may be more overgrown now than it was when we first used it. \nWe will begin by hiking northwest from Kanan on the Backbone Trail to the Zuma Ridge Trail. The winding trail leads to a view of Newton Falls and Upper Zuma Falls\, which are especially grand after the winter rains. \n \nWe will then turn south along Zuma Ridge to Buzzards Roost where we will rest\, eat and take in ocean views. \n \nOur secret trail will come into view way across the canyon. It has been revealed by the Woolsey fire and not so secret anymore. \n \nAfter passing Buzzards Roost we will continue on Zuma Ridge until we come to an equestrian trail and descend down into Zuma Canyon. Maybe there will be water in the creek \n \nAfter a short break and crossing the creek we’ll head up my secret trail to the eastern ridge of Zuma Canyon and snake our way up and to the north back toward the cars closing the loop. \n \nHike is strenuous at about 9.5 miles with almost 2\,800 ft total ascent. We’ll go at an easy pace \nWear long pants. Bring at least 2qts water\, lunch/snacks\, good hiking shoes\nBruce did a little work on the secret trail Sunday (9/1). Here is a sample of the trail conditions: \n[vc_row][vc_column][vc_gallery type=”image_grid” images=”55886\,55885″ img_size=”medium”][/vc_column][/vc_row] \n\nDirections\nThe trailhead parking lot is on Kanan\, north side ot T1 \nFrom the Ventura Freeway 101\, go south (toward beaches) on Kanan Road about 7.8 miles to just before the “third tunnel” (T1). The parking lot is on the right (west side of what is now Kanan-Dume Road) and easy to spot. \nFrom Pacific Coast Highway in Malibu\, go north on Kanan Dume Road about 4.3 miles\, just through the “first tunnel\,” and make a left turn into the parking lot on the west side of Kanan Dume.[/vc_column_text][/vc_column][/vc_row]

SUMMARY:Talepop Loop & Lunch at La Paz
DESCRIPTION:Please join us on the site of the former Chumash village known as Talepop\, in the Liberty Canyon Natural Preserve. \nWe will be dedicating this hike to Jeff Sherman. Jeff signed up for this hike on August 21 before passing away last Monday during our Zuma Canyon hike. (See Comments section) \nHe loved hiking and would have wanted us to continue with this one. He will be with us in spirit. \nOur hike begins at Juan Bautista de Anza Park which will connect us with the Talepop Loop Trail. The trail climbs up a ridgeline with nice views of Liberty Canyon\, Las Virgenes Canyon and oak-studded rolling hills. \nThe hike will be a combination of ranch roads and single track trails.  We will make a side trip on the Grasslands trail and visit the historic Sepulveda Adobe and stroll past White Oak Farm (see below)\, creating a 4.75 mile (appx) lollipop with about 600 ft total ascent. Bring at least a quart of water. \nPost hike lunch is down the road at La Paz Restaurant\n4505 Las Virgenes Rd.\nCalabasas\, CA 91302 \nSlide Show\nhttps://hwdmedia.s3.us-west-1.amazonaws.com/wp-content/uploads/2019/08/28194703/Talepop.mp4\nThe swing is gone but the swingers will be there! \n\n\nThe Sepulveda Adobe\nBuilt in 1863\, the home of California pioneer homesteader Don Pedro Alcantra Sepulveda stands today on its original site just west of the corner of Las Virgenes Road and Mulholland Highway. \nPedro Sepulveda and his wife Soledad raised their twelve children at this small home near Las Virgenes Creek. The rancho was farmed and the many crops grown there included field corn\, beans\, potatoes\, turnips and onions. A mulberry tree planted by Don Pedro well over 100 years ago thrives today and is still bearing fruit. Sepulveda supported his family as a charcoal maker and supplier of oak firewood that heated the fine homes in Los Angeles of the day. His roundtrip to the city with a wagonload of wood took three days at the time when the 101 freeway was nothing but a narrow dirt trail. \nClick on a pic for full view plus captions\n[av_gallery ids=’55982\,55983\,55984′ style=’thumbnails’ preview_size=’portfolio’ crop_big_preview_thumbnail=’avia-gallery-big-crop-thumb’ thumb_size=’square’ columns=’3′ imagelink=’lightbox’ lazyload=’animations_off’ id=” custom_class=” av_uid=’av-24w8lk’ admin_preview_bg=”] \nThe Sepulveda Adobe was inhabited from the time of its construction until 1980. Badly damaged in the 1994 earthquake\, seismic retrofitting and restoration began eight years later\, shepherded by the California State Parks Dept. Most work was completed in 2017 and public access accommodations were to follow.  The home itself is now barely a shell of its former self due to the Woolsey fire \nWhite Oak Farm\nWhite Oak Farm on Las Virgenes Rd was an early 20th-Century dairy and ranch. The barn here\, built in the 1920s\, is one of the oldest remaining barns in the region. During the 1920s  and through the 1940s\, the farm served as a “gentleman’s ranch.” The site was eventually purchased by Bob Hope in 1952. Bob Hope’s brother James lived there and managed the ranch for more than 20 years. The Hopes sold the property to the State in 1975 and it was incorporated it into Malibu Creek State Park. Today(?) it is a residence for one of the park rangers. \nThis photo is from my Thanksgiving 2016 hike. I haven’t visited since before the Woolsey fire and current condition is unknown\nDirections:\nJuan Bautista de Anza Park is on the corner of Las Virgenes and Lost Hills Rds. Park in the lot or on the street. Meet at west end of parking lot. \nFrom the Valley – Take 101 west. Exit Las Virgenes. Left on Las Virgenes to Lost Hills Rd. Right on Lost Hills. Park will be on left but continue to next corner for U-turn. \nFrom TO – Take 101 east. Exit Lost Hills Rd. Right on Lost Hills. Right into Park

DESCRIPTION:On this one we’ll visit the old pig farm and have a post-hike lunch at Malibu Seafood Patio where they let you bring your own drink. \nOur hike will begin at sea level in Corral Canyon\, the last undeveloped coastal canyon in Los Angeles County that flows freely to the ocean. Maybe there will be water in the creek this time. We will then leave Corral Canyon for my “secret trail” through pristine wilderness to the Puerco Canyon watershed divide that provides spectacular ocean and mountain views. The trail isn’t so secret any more\, but it is the trail less traveled. We’ll return to the restaurant via another secret trail \nWe’ll have fun checking out the artifacts from a bygone era…and mysterious buildings… \nHike is about 7 miles\, with two interconnected loops and about 1800 ft total ascent. Hike is rated DIFFICULT due to terrain. See the new hike ratings guide: https://www.meetup.com/localhikers/pages/29633850/HIKE_RATINGS_GUIDE/ \nCheck out my slide show from various similar hikes\n[av_video src=’https://youtu.be/89yUvvc9Xqw’ mobile_image=” attachment=” attachment_size=” format=’16-9′ width=’16’ height=’9′ conditional_play=” id=” custom_class=” av_uid=’av-378l1o’] \n  \nAfter the hike we’ll have lunch next door at Malibu Seafood Patio. Kitchen opens at 11:00 AM. Maybe we’ll spot some dolphins frolicking in the waves\, or some celebrities. \n \nThey let you bring your own beverages including booze. So pack a cooler with your favorite beverage and enjoy a fresh seafood lunch by the trailhead — you will deserve it! I’ll bring some white wine. \nBring sunscreen\, hat\, 2 quarts water\, sturdy shoes and a snack. Clothing optional. \nThere is street parking on PCH\, $7.00 in lot next to restaurant at the iron ranger — cc ok \nTrail statistics are approximate. For safety purposes always assume they are underestimated. But don’t be disappointed if they are overestimated. Bring more water and snacks than you think you’ll need. \nTrail descriptions are based on previous hikes. Current conditions are unknown until arrival. Expect the unexpected and plan accordingly. \nThe Organizers and members in this group are not professional leaders\, guides\, or mountaineers. The function of the member or organizer is only to organize the trip. Each person who shows up for a trip/meetup (and their guest or guests) is responsible for his or her own safety. SUMMARY:Once Upon a Time In Hollywood Chatsworth
DESCRIPTION:On this hike\, we will cross paths with the famous and the infamous. The famous is the site of the Spahn Ranch movie set for Once Upon a Time in Hollywood. The infamous is the site of the real Spahn Ranch. Along the way we’ll learn additional Chatsworth history. \nOur trek begins at the top of the Old Stagecoach Rd and ventures west and down through Twilight Canyon to Corriganville where Quentin Tarantino created the set for the Spahn Ranch in Once Upon a Time in Hollywood. For those of you familiar with the park\, you know this isn’t the first movie filmed at Corriganville and we’ll be visiting some of the older movie and TV sites also. \nAfter a little site-seeing and a loop around Corriganville we’ll head up a hill to the 118 and cross under it using a wildlife corridor. From there we’ll take a seldom-used trail to the fork at the Hummingbird Trail and Rocky Peak Trails. Here\, we’ll find a rock house — a small room under a rock overhang. It was built as part of a movie set. Across the trail from the rock house is a natural cave above the trail. Rumor has it that an entire family lived there at one time. This a perfect spot for our snack break! \n\n\nWe continue our loop by heading down Rocky Peak Rd and catch the El Camino Nuevo which will bring us to the Spahn Ranch. Nowadays\, the ranch is basically nonexistent; its remnants are fully blended into a maze of trees\, shrubs and poison oak. We’ll take another snack break at the infamous Manson family cave. Immortalized in a 1969 Time magazine photo/piece about the clan\, the rock remains untouched\, and offers fans the chance to channel their inner Mansonite for a morbid photo op. \nOur return to the Old Stagecoach Rd will take us across the lands once claimed by Chatsworth homesteaders. \n[av_notification title=’Hike Rating’ icon_select=’yes’ icon=’ue8c7′ font=’entypo-fontello’ color=’orange’ border=” custom_bg=’#444444′ custom_font=’#ffffff’ size=’large’ close_btn=” cookie_lifetime=’60’ av_uid=’av-n88i8k’ custom_class=” admin_preview_bg=”]\nHike will be about 8 miles with 1\,900 ft total ascent and is rated DIFFICULT due to terrain. See the Hike Rating Guide\n[/av_notification] \n  \nEnjoy the history lessons below 🙂\n  \nThe Spahn Ranch\nThe ranch took its name from dairy farmer George Spahn\, who purchased the property in 1948. Many western-themed movies and television shows were filmed on the ranch\, including Duel in the Sun (1946) and television episodes of Bonanza\, The Lone Ranger\, and Zorro. It was also the filming location for the B-movie The Creeping Terror. \nThe Spahn Ranch is notorious for having been the primary residence of Charles Manson and his followers\, the “Manson Family\,” for much of 1968 and 1969. Spahn was 80 years old and living at the ranch when he allowed The Manson Family to move in\, rent-free\, in exchange for labor.A wildfire destroyed all of the Spahn Movie Ranch’s film sets and residential structures on September 26\, 1970. George Spahn died on September 22\, 1974\, and is buried in Eternal Valley Memorial Park in nearby Newhall\, California. \nHere we are February 2018; on the ranch and re-doing the iconic 1969 Time-Life photo.\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nCorriganville\nWe’ve been here many times. From 1937 to 1965 Corriganville Movie Ranch\, owned by stuntman Ray “Crash” Corrigan\, was a working film studio and movie ranch for outdoor location shooting. In 1949\, it opened to the public on weekends and holidays. \nWhy not just let Crash show you around the ranch on his DVD \nLoading ...\nIn 1965 Ray Corrigan sold the property to Bob Hope. A housing subdivision called Hopetown was developed and built on a parcel near the park entrance. In the late 1960s and early 1970s part of the site was used for motorcycle racing. In 1970 the ranch was swept by fire. In 1979 another fire destroyed virtually all of the remaining structures. \nIn 1988 The land was acquired by the City of Simi Valley for use as a regional park \nHere are videos of the “Jungle Jim Rock” and “Robin Hood Lake.”  To the right is Fort Apache \n[av_one_half first av_uid=’av-1qa17tg’] \n[av_video src=’http://youtu.be/G-MeZdkkeFo’ mobile_image=” attachment=” attachment_size=” format=’16-9′ width=’16’ height=’9′ conditional_play=” av_uid=’av-1bqa6yc’ id=” custom_class=”] \n[/av_one_half] \n[av_one_half av_uid=’av-s3zo0k’] \n[av_video src=’http://youtu.be/YK7ajTUHHrY’ mobile_image=” attachment=” attachment_size=” format=’16-9′ width=’16’ height=’9′ conditional_play=” av_uid=’av-lxwzdg’ id=” custom_class=”] \n[/av_one_half] \nThe structures have been torn down but here we are October 2018 crashing the set for Once Upon a Time in Hollywood.\n[av_video src=’https://youtu.be/0F0lGfSnEyI’ mobile_image=” attachment=” attachment_size=” format=’16-9′ width=’16’ height=’9′ conditional_play=” av_uid=’av-nx8pn8′ id=” custom_class=”] \nEl Camino Nuevo\nMore appropriately known as the Chatsworth Grade Road it replaced the stagecoach route in 1895 and provided an easier and smoother route to transport goods. It was also able to accommodate motorized vehicles. We’ll be hiking along this old grade which was replaced by our familiar Old Santa Susana Pass in 1917. \n[av_notification title=’More to Follow’ icon_select=’yes’ icon=’ue80f’ font=’entypo-fontello’ color=’silver’ border=’solid’ custom_bg=’#444444′ custom_font=’#ffffff’ size=’large’ close_btn=” cookie_lifetime=’60’ custom_class=” av_uid=’av-q2xs38′ admin_preview_bg=”]\nCheck back here often as I will be adding more historical notes\, photos and videos over the next few days\n[/av_notification] \n[av_textblock size=” font_color=” color=” av-desktop-hide=” av-medium-hide=” av-small-hide=” av-mini-hide=” av-medium-font-size=” av-small-font-size=” av-mini-font-size=” av_uid=’av-2bbqms’] \nDirections\nRSVP Here: https://www.meetup.com/localhikers/events/264413389/ \nFrom the 118 – Exit Rocky Peak Rd\, turn right on Santa Susana Rd. After you pass the Rocky Peak exit off the 118 Freeway\, start looking to your left for Lilac Lane. Park in corner dirt lot. There is some shoulder parking nearby too. We will meet on the corner. \nThe lot won’t hold all of us so here are some parking options: https://goo.gl/2kCoLi\nWalk to corner of Lilac Ln and Santa Susana Pass Rd \nHaven’t seen the movie? SUMMARY:10th Annual Chatsworth Halloween Hike - Saturday Night Version
DESCRIPTION:We’ve been doing this one in Chatsworth/Twin Lakes since 2009. It’s the scariest hike this side of Transylvania! \nDue to ongoing development in the area our exact path is unknown at this time\, but I estimate it to be about 4 miles with 700′ elevation gain. I will have more accurate figures after pre-scouting the area. \n \nCostumes are optional: https://amzn.to/2n5iZyX \nI don’t have many night photos but enjoy this video from Halloween 2014\n \n  \nDon’t forget to check out the daytime extended version of the hike \nPart of the hike will be on little-used trails. Long pants would be nice for some short segments\, but not required for hike. Wear hiking shoes or boots. Expect the unexpected. If you are not an experienced hiker this hike may not be for you. \nNO WHITE LIGHTS – Red and Green lights only. If you don’t have one you can tailgate off of someone else’s. Here are some recommendations:\n\n\n\n\n\n\nMOUNTAINTOP 22L Unisex Hiking/Camping BackpackNot available\n View on Amazon\n\n\n\n\nTETON Sports Explorer 4000 Internal Frame Backpack...Not available\n View on Amazon\n\n\nDIRECTIONS\nTake 101 or 118 to Topanga and head to the north end. Make a left on Poema and park at curb. We meet at the Bella Vista entrance \nAdvice – avoid the Twin Lakes neighborhood roads. Use major arteries to get to Topanga and Poema \nCheck out the map and familiarize yourself with the destination and neighborhood. Carpooling is recommended (see Warner Center Park and Ride).
