SUMMARY:Call for donations to help the homeless\, NOT an event.
DESCRIPTION:This is not an event\, rather a call to action. One of our members\, Jackie\, will be taking donations of items and is also looking for volunteers to help the homeless in the downtown area. Please consider doing what you can to help. \nShe is seeking the following donation items: \n1. Warm clothing\, jackets\, sweaters\, and blankets. \n2. Food items including perishables. \n3. Other items such as socks\, toiletries/personal care\, etc. \nYou can bring these items to her on hikes or at other events\, and if she isn’t there\, I can take them. The deadline is Friday\, the 15th\, so please consider donating some goods or your time\, as she is seeking volunteers to help\, as well. \nWe all know how cold it gets this time of year\, and it is the season for giving\, so please consider donating something\, anything\, if you can manage. \nAny questions\, just email Jackie via Meetup or post your questions here. \nThank you so much in advance for your kindness and a happy holiday season to us all.

SUMMARY:Feel the Peace\, Love\, and Joy ~ Intermediate Hike from Wendy Trailhead
DESCRIPTION:Let’s head out to the famed Peace\, Love\, Joy arch at the Danielson. This out and back hike wanders through grasslands and chaparral from the Wendy trailhead\, then climbs up Boney Mountain Trail for some fantastic views north to Port Hueneme and Oxnard and west toward the Pacific Ocean. If it’s a clear day we’ll easily be able to see Santa Cruz Island as well as the Los Padres Mountain range. If it’s really clear\, we’ll catch a glimpse of Mount Baldy in the distance to our east. \nAt the upper end we’ll visit the remnants of an old cabin and the Danielson Monument. The monument is dedicated to Richard Danielson\, the person who donated much of the land for the Santa Monica Mountains National Recreation Area (SMNMRA). The hike will start in SMNMRA and pass into Point Mugu State Park. It’s mostly single track and fire road. \nhttp://photos4.meetupstatic.com/photos/event/d/4/0/event_98343392.jpeg \nhttp://photos1.meetupstatic.com/photos/event/f/7/a/event_98343962.jpeg \nThis out and back hike is about 6 miles with about 1200 feet of elevation gain. \nPlease review the guidelines to participate in our morning hikes. SUMMARY:Dos Vientos -- Ride the Two Winds\, a Gentler Friendly Hike.
DESCRIPTION:PLEASE NOTE: We will meet under the solar panels and NOT by the tennis courts. \nThis hike is in addition to the longer hike on Tuesday\, but we will be shorter and slower. \nRestrictions apply for your safety and ours: \n\nDon’t show up unless you’re on the “Attending” list\nUnregistered or waitlisted will be turned away\nNo “Plus Ones” on this hike\n\nThis hike will loop around the periphery of Dos Vientos\, passing Twin Ponds\, overlooking Potrero Road and the Oxnard Plain with the Channel Islands in the background. SUMMARY:Las Llajas - Suitable for beginners
DESCRIPTION:5 miles\, 500′ gain\, Beginner \nThis hike is a great trail for beginners because all the elevation gain is distributed. It is a walk down a rolling fire road through a really cool canyon\, and you will find no difficult or extended elevation climbs. \nThis is one of my favorite trails for people new to hiking. It is an “out-and-back” hike\, where we return the way we came\, so there is virtually no chance of getting lost. You may be amazed that such a place exists right here in Simi Valley. \nFrom the trail head\, we’ll walk down an asphalt path for several hundred steps and turn right onto a gravel fire road. After that\, there will be no more turns. We may take a detour up a trail off to the right to see the first bee sanctuary\, then return back to the fire road. \nWe’ll continue on the fire-road for about 1 mile. We’ll stop there (in the shade if summer) to allow others to catch up. \nThen we’ll take a 200′ detour to the left to see another bee sanctuary\, which continues in a half circle back to the fire road. Even though I haven’t seen any actual bees there in a while\, it’s still interesting to see. \nWe’ll continue for another 1.5 miles and have a social event\, right on the trail. We’ll share snacks and beverages. For the return\, we go back the way we came. \nThere is a lot of wild life along this trail because it is the only area with water for quite a distance. \nThis is a social hike\, not a conditioning hike. Still\, for those that aren’t interested in the beverage and/or snack share and want more of a workout\, just continue on for another mile\, then turn around and come back. That’s about how long we’ll be before packing up and heading back the way we came. \nInteresting Notes:\nTree Tobacco (Nicotiana glauca)\nElongated yellow flowers. The Cahuilla Indians used the leaves interchangeably with other tobacco species in hunting rituals and as a poultice to treat swellings\, bruises\, cuts\, wounds\, boils\, sores\, inflamed throat\, and swollen glands. \nIt does not contain nicotine. It contains anabasine\, a similar compound\, which is highly toxic to humans and animals. It is more toxic than nicotine. Ingestion of the leaves can be fatal. It is being investigated for use as a biofuel. All parts of this plant are toxic. \nUsed as an insecticide. Do not smoke it. \nThe Hike\nDistance: 5 miles\nGain: 500′\nDistribution: Well distributed.\nDifficulty: Beginner\nShape: Out and Back.\nPace: 2.0 mph.\nTrail Type: Fire road.\nTrail Variations: Rolling stroll.\nDuration: 3.5 hours\nDogs: Yes.\nRestrooms: No\nDrinking Fountains: No.\nParking: Free along street. \nWhat to bring:\n1 liter of water for every 3 miles.\nSnacks and/or beverages to share\nHiking shoes preferred\, but athletic shoes will be OK.\nFlashlight or headlamp.\nSunscreen and/or hat as needed. \nHosting \nRoute and Navigation: Host memory\, enhanced by GPS navigation as needed. \nHike type: Social.\nWe won’t be hiking at a fast pace because this is a social hike\, not a conditioning hike. There is nothing wrong with stopping\, even if it means every 50 steps. \nStops:\nThe host may designate stopping points to let others catch up. This hike will include an extended stop for a snack and beverage share at the half way point. This hike does not have any junctions or turns once past the initial path down to the fire road. There may not always be a sweeper designated to be the last hiker. \nSince this hike is out-and-back on a wide fire road with no turns after the first 500′\, one cannot get lost. Therefore\, for this hike\, it will be acceptable to split from the group moving faster\, slower\, or otherwise at your own pace. \nGroup separation:\nSometimes hikers wish to move significantly ahead and not wait at designated stopping points. Please let the host know. They are on their own regarding route and navigation. \nDirections\nLas Llajas Canyon Trail\n5715 Evening Sky Dr\nSimi Valley\, CA 93063 \nFrom the west\n23-N to 118-E\, Exit 29 Yosemite.\nFrom the east: 118-W\, Exit 29 Yosemite.\nHead north on Yosemite for 1.25 miles. Turn right (east) on Evening Sky Drive and proceed for 0.5 miles.\nSee the trail head on the left. Park along the street. \nFAQ\nHiking Plus Page Links\nDisclaimer / Release of Liability

SUMMARY:Solstice Canyon - Sostomo - Deer Valley Loop
DESCRIPTION:Solstice Canyon is the quintessential coastal canyon. The year-round stream provides ample water to support this 550-acre park’s numerous plant communities and a diverse wildlife population. \nYou will love the natural beauty of Solstice Canyon\, yet wildfires have left behind the architectural ruins of our recent past. During our trek we will pass remains of the Keller House\, a stone hunting cabin built over one hundred years ago\, and significantly damaged by fire in 2007. Upon arriving at the park’s most popular feature\, the 30′ Solstice waterfall\, we will find the stone and brick ruins of The Roberts Ranch house designed by architect Paul Revere Williams in 1952. In 1929\, Williams became the first African American member of the American Institute of Architects and later designed a prominent landmark at the Los Angeles International Airport\, the “LAX Theme Building (1961).” \nWe will extend the classic Solstice Canyon hike by taking the Sostomo Trail and Deer Valley Loop Trail. The trail meanders through chaparral and coastal sage scrub to the western ridge of Solstice Canyon. After a couple of stream crossings we will encounter breathtaking views of the Pacific Ocean. Keep an eye out for the ruins of several cabins burned in past wildfires. \nHIKE IS ABOUT 7.5 MILES WITH ABOUT 1900 FT TOTAL ASCENT AND IS RATED MEDIUM+ DUE TO TERRAIN. SEE THE HIKE RATING GUIDE \nBring at least 2 quarts water\, sunscreen\, hat\, snacks. Sturdy tennis shoes OK. \nDIRECTIONS \nFrom PCH\, turn inland on Corral Canyon Rd. and proceed north for about 0.2 mile until you arrive at the entrance to the Solstice Canyon Park. Turn left and proceed along Solstice Canyon Rd for about 0.5 mile until you arrive at the second parking area. Corral Canyon Rd is between Malibu Canyon and Kanan-Dume Rd. \nRULES \n\nCarpooling is desirable\nAll hikers must stay on established trails\nNo use of flour or chalk to mark trails.\nPractice “Leave No Trace” – take only pictures and leave only footprints\n\nTrail statistics are approximate. For safety purposes always assume they are underestimated. But don’t be disappointed if they are overestimated. Bring more water and snacks than you think you’ll need. \nTrail descriptions are based on previous hikes. Current conditions are unknown until arrival. Expect the unexpected and plan accordingly. \nThe Organizers and members of Hiking With Dean are not professional leaders\, guides\, or mountaineers. The function of the member or organizer is only to organize the trip. Each person who shows up for a trip/meetup (and their guest or guests) is responsible for his or her own safety. SUMMARY:Wildwood Central Park (Fast Paced - over 3+ mph)
DESCRIPTION:Please bring a headlamp or flashlight. \nWildwood Park in Thousand Oaks is one of the most versatile local parks there is\, with 27 miles of trails skittering through rocky cliffs\, cacti-filled desert environs\, volcanic rock\, riparian forest\, and a cool\, watery canyon. Highlights of the hike include waterfalls incorporating 40’ Paradise waterfalls along with a long creek\, Indian caves\, volcanic rock cliffs\, and wildflowers throughout. Wildwood’s archetypal western look served as the set for The Rifleman\, Gunsmoke\, and Wagon Train back in the day\, as well as the movie Spartacus. \nIt will start at the trailhead that has steps down to the Moonridge Trail. We’ll take the trail down by the teepee to Wildwood Canyon Trail\, pass by Paradise Falls\, pick up Lizard Rock Trail\, and go by a water treatment plant on our way to Lizard Rock. We’ll take Stagecoach Bluff Trail for some more elevation\, and either catch Mesa Trail or Moonridge Trail back to the parking lot. We’ll pass through various trails with bridges\, crossing streams\, and have some tree canopies for approximately 5 miles with about a 1200’ elevation gain/loss. We will take a break somewhere in our travels. \nDirections: \nFrom the 101 in Thousand Oaks\, turn north on Lynn Road and continue 2.6 miles to Avenida De Los Arboles\, then turn left. Continue for about a mile to the end and turn into the Wildwood parking lot on the left. \nFrom the 118\, travel west to the 23\, exit at Avenida De Los Arboles and turn right. Drive further than you remember having to drive to this trailhead (10 or 15 minutes). Turn left into the parking lot when the road ends. \nPLEASE READ BELOW IN ITS ENTIRETY \nPlease review the guidelines (link to the guidelines) to join our hikes.\nRestrictions apply for your safety and ours: \n\nDon’t show up unless you’re shown on the “Attending” list.\nPlan on KEEPING UP with the group and completing the entire hike or please find an alternative hike that better suits your hiking level.\nYour safety is your own personal responsibility\, but the hike leader reserves the right to ask you to leave if you come unprepared.\nNo “Plus Ones” or dogs on Weekday Trailblazer hikes.\n\nDISCLAIMER / RELEASE OF LIABILITY \nThe hike host is a volunteer and not responsible for the group. We’ll be stopping at the 3/4 point by a picnic table\, so please bring food and drink to share\, any utensils your items might require. \nWe have had occasions where there were no utensils\, so it might be wise to at least bring your own. \nWe start at Conejo Canyons Trail Head\, 2010 Conejo Center Dr\, Thousand Oaks\, CA 91320. \nWe’ll hike downhill from the trailhead for 0.6 miles. \nFor the regular route\, we’ll turn left and continue uphill for 0.6 miles on the Western Plateau trail and follow the fire road around to the right at the top\, then mostly flat for about a mile\, then dropping for another 1/2 mile. \nAt the bottom and when coming to a junction\, turn right onto Hawk Canyon. At the top\, the picnic table at Angel Vista offers one of the magnificent panoramic viewpoints in the Santa Monica Mountains in a coastal area including the Boney Mountains\, Sandstone Peak and the rocky crown of Santa Monicas with Conejo Valley\, the Oxnard Plains and (on a clear day) a couple of the Channel Islands. \nThis hike is about 5 miles with an elevation gain/loss approximately 900’. \nDirections: From the 101 Freeway take Ventu Park Rd. south\, turn right on Lynn Rd. and left on Regal Oak. \nPLEASE READ BELOW IN ITS ENTIRETY \nPlease review our guidelines to participate in our hikes. \nRestrictions apply for your safety and ours: \n\nDon’t show up unless you’re shown on the “Attending” list.\nPlan on KEEPING UP with the group and completing the entire hike at a moderate pace\, or please find an alternative hike that better suits your hiking level.\nNo “Plus Ones” or dogs on Weekday Trailblazer hikes.\n\nDISCLAIMER / RELEASE OF LIABILITY \nThe hike host is a volunteer and not responsible for the group. SUMMARY:The Heart of Topanga State Park - Eagle Rock and Musch Loops
DESCRIPTION:In just under 7 miles\, this “super-duper-double-looper” will explore the heart of Topanga State Park (TSP) and touch all of TSP’s major trailheads. Starting at Trippet Ranch\, we will head up TSP’s Nature Trail which crosses Eagle Springs Fire Road near the junction of the East Topanga Fire Road (jumping off point to Parker Mesa). The Nature Trail skirts Santa Ynez canyon with peek-a-boo views of Santa Monica Bay before passing the Santa Ynez Canyon (“Waterfall”) trailhead on the way back to the Eagle Springs Fire Road. We will continue up the fire road past Eagle Junction to Hub Junction\, the highest point of the hike at 2000′. \nHub Junction marks the start of the second half of our TSP tour. We will head west and rollercoaster along the ridge\, past the Garapito trailhead\, to Eagle Rock. After a brief photo stop at Eagle Rock we continue down to Eagle Junction where we pick up the Musch Trail and our final leg of the double loop. Despite the lack of flowers at this time of the year\, Musch promises to be the highlight of this hike. We will transition in and out of chaparral\, oak woodland\, riparian woodland and grassland meadows. The last trailhead we will cross\, before making it back to the parking lot\, is the infamous Dead Horse Trail. So\, by my count\, our 7 mile\, 1200′ adventure will take us on or across 8 trails/trailheads. A super-duper-looper indeed! \nDirections: \nFrom the 101\, exit at Topanga Canyon Boulevard (CA 27)\, drive south over the crest of the mountains and proceed three miles to Entrada Road (not Entrado!) and turn left. Keep to the left at every opportunity until you reach the park’s main parking lot (about one mile) \nFrom the Pacific Coast Highway\, travel north on Topanga Canyon Boulevard\, pass the post office at the center of “town\,” then turn right on Entrada Road. Keep to the left at every opportunity until you reach the park’s main parking lot (about one mile). \nParking is $10.00/$9.00 for seniors (exact change\, although I think they take cc) in Park. There is some street parking (free) outside of the park on the road. \nDISCLAIMER / RELEASE OF LIABILITY\nIMPORTANT\, PLEASE READ BELOW IN ITS ENTIRETY:\nThe hike host is a volunteer and not responsible for the group. Safety should be a priority for everyone in the group. Please treat this meet-up as hiking with a group of friends. Your personal safety depends on your own judgment and experience. You agree that you can navigate back to your transportation by yourself\, and agree to do so if you fall behind and lose track of the main body of hikers. \nBy now you should know the guidelines to participate in our morning hikes. SUMMARY:It Never Rains in Southern California #3 - 4.5 mi\, 2.5 hours
DESCRIPTION:Join us on this ramble near the Hollywood Bowl to see old Hollywood. See the festive holiday lights by Rudolph Valentino’s house and the stair streets where gumshoes Philip Marlowe and Harry Bosch worked their cases. Just hope it doesn’t rain like it always does in film noir thrillers. Work off those holiday calories to prepare for winter adventures by carrying a heavy pack like Saint Nicholas. Meet at the old Starbucks on Highland & Franklin (1900 Highland Ave\, LA 90068). Street parking is limited so arrive early. Hint: try a parking lot to the north.\nBring water\, adventurous spirit\, strong legs\, a sharp eye and a love of stair hikes. Flashlight suggested.\nThis will also be a Sierra Club Wilderness Travel Course intro-hike – you can learn more about the class during this hike! Class starts in January 2024 – register now before the class fills up. More info at: https://www.wildernesstravelcourse.org\nHike Leader: Homer Tom hikerhomie@gmail.com\nCo-leader: Sheri Bonstelle \nEvent Organizer – Homer Tom

SUMMARY:Ray Miller Trail in La Jolla Canyon ~ Gentler Intermediate
DESCRIPTION:Let’s try Ray Miller Trail after last week’s rain. The trail is an awesome blend of ocean and mountain views in Malibu’s La Jolla Canyon. We will start from the trailhead which follows the canyon eastward\, away from the ocean. Then\, it quickly brings you back toward the ocean at a gradual incline. There’s a great lookout spot where it gives you a breathtaking view of the Pacific Coast Highway against the backdrop of the Pacific Ocean\, with sweeping views toward Mugu Rock on the west and Sycamore Cove on the east. After another peak\, you’ll start a slight decline that brings you to the fire road where we will turn around. Along the way\, we’ll be treated to magnificent sweeping views of La Jolla and Big Sycamore Canyons\, and of course\, the largest ocean in the world. On a clear day\, the Channel Islands are easily within sight.\nThis is a 5-6 mile out and back hike with an elevation gain/loss of about 1000’. \nDirections: \nFrom Los Angeles\, take the Pacific Coast Highway (PCH) north\, 22 miles from Malibu Canyon Rd. Across the street from Thornhill Broome Beach is the entrance to La Jolla Canyon. It is very clearly marked. Turn right. \nFrom Ventura\, take PCH eastward\, and turn left 4 miles after Las Posas Road. \nHeads up: There is a parking fee in the lot (or free with state parking pass). There is free parking on PCH just a short walk to the trailhead. \nPlease review the guidelines (guidelines) to join our hikes.\nRestrictions apply for your safety and ours: \n\nDon’t show up unless you’re shown on the “Attending” list.\nPlan on KEEPING UP with the group and completing the entire hike at a moderate pace\, or please find an alternative hike that better suits your hiking level.\nNo “Plus Ones” or dogs on Weekday Trailblazer hikes.\n\nDISCLAIMER/RELEASE OF LIABILITY – PLEASE READ IN ITS ENTIRETY \nThe hike host is a volunteer and not responsible for the group. Safety should be a priority for everyone in the group. Please treat this meet-up as hiking with a group of friends.
