SUMMARY:Potrero – All paved – Easy Intermediate
DESCRIPTION:5.75 miles\, 700′ gain. Easy Intermediate.\nDo not park on Potrero else risk getting a ticket. You need a permit to park on this street. \nThis hike is a great trail when it might be muddy because almost the entire hike is on an asphalt path through a huge state park (> 20 sq miles). \nThere is an extended incline on the return. \nSince the elevation gain is low and the route is paved\, we’ll be likely hiking a little faster than typical. It’s a little more than 8 miles to go all the way to the ocean. \nAt the 2.9 mile mark\, we’ll find a picnic table 350′ off to the side\, where we’ll stop and have a social event for about an hours before heading back the way we came. There are no turns on this hike\, so as long as you stay on the asphalt path\, you really can’t get lost. \nDirections:\n4161 Potrero Rd.\nThousand Oaks\, CA 91320\n34.156636\, -118.962989 \nNote that when turning left at the dead end to continue on Potrero Rd.\, the sign at the intersection will say S. Reina\, but it is actually only that street if you go right\, and to the left\, it is a continuation of Potrero Rd. \nFrom the west: 101-S\, Exit 48B Wendy Dr.\, turn right.\nFrom the east: 101-N\, Exit 47C Wendy Dr.\, turn left.\nSouth on Wendy Dr. until it deadends at Potrero Rd.\nRight on Potrero Rd. for 0.5 miles.\nLeft to stay on Potrero Rd. (it is Reino if you turn right) for 0.5 miles.\nTurn right on Pinehill Ave. and park. \nWalk 800 feet back to the intersection of Potrero Rd. and Big Sycamore Canyon Rd.\nDo not park on Potrero Rd. \nThe Hike:\nDistance: 5.9 miles.\nGain: 700′\, mostly on the return.\nDistribution: The return section has an extended incline.\nDifficulty: Easy Intermediate.\nShape: Out and Back.\nPace: 2.0 mph.\nTrail Type: Asphalt path.\nTrail Variations: Rolling stroll with an extended incline.\nDuration: 3.5 hours.\nDogs: Yes.\nRestrooms: Yes\, along the way at the start.\nDrinking Fountains: Yes\, along the way at the start.\nParking: Free along Pinehill Ave. No parking on Potrero\, it is for residents with a permit only. \nWhat to bring: 1 liter of water for every 3 miles.\nSnacks and/or beverages to share (https://www.meetup.com/Hiking-Plus/messages/boards/thread/50879772).\nHiking shoes preferred\, but athletic shoes will be OK.\nFlashlight or headlamp. \nHosting\nRoute: The host knows the route. A pic of the route has been posted as part of this description. Navigation: GPS navigation as needed. \nHike type: Social.\nWe won’t be hiking at a fast pace because this is a social hike\, not a conditioning hike. There is nothing wrong with stopping\, even if it means every 50 steps. See “How hard is this hike” in the discussion section (LINK). \nThis hike is out-and-back on an asphalt path\, While it will be acceptable to split from the group moving faster\, slower\, or otherwise at your own pace\, keep in mind if you get ahead\, you must know where we are stopping. \n[FAQ](https://www.meetup.com/Hiking-Plus/pages/23772638/Frequently_Asked_Questions/)\n[Disclaimer / Release of Liability](https://www.meetup.com/Hiking-Plus/pages/29622459/Is_Hiking_Dangerous/)

SUMMARY:Sudden Hike ~ Skyline Trail in Honor of Don T.
DESCRIPTION:For those who never had the pleasure of hiking with Don\, I can’t say enough about what a remarkable person he was and what a profound influence he had on so many lives – how much he put into grow the group\, make it uniquely his own and fill our weekends with memorable adventures\, all while making great friends in the process. You can find hiking groups everywhere but Don had a way of finding the best routes\, on and off the beaten path…and always included a personal touch in his write ups. Every year\, we try to do a birthday hike to remember and honor him. \nAny pace welcome to do the Skyline Trail out and back. The plan is to hike up to the Verdugo Motorway at a moderate pace\, take in the views and head back the way we came. There will be a couple points to stop along the way to take short breaks and regroup. It’s pretty straightforward but will mark the trail\, if needed. Bring layers. It gets cold when we stop for a snack break. \nSTATS \nDistance: 6.5 miles \nElevation Gain: 1700 feet. \nRating: Moderate 5/10\, not for beginners. \nTrail: Fire Road\, Non-maintained Fire Road and Single Track w/very little shade. \nDaylight Saving Time doesn’t end until the weekend so bring a headlamp. \nWe will meet at the Skyline trailhead and make our way to the Verdugo Motorway\, maybe go to one of the towers\, and head back the way we came. When returning to the cars\, please keep in mind this is a residential neighborhood. \nDirections: \nIf heading north on the 5 fwy\, take Olive exit to Olive Ave. Head northeast\, towards the mountains\, until you reach the Country Club arch. Drive through. Road becomes Country Club Dr. Follow it until road veers right to S. Via Montana. \nIf heading south on the 5 fwy\, take the Verdugo Ave exit. Make a left. Follow the road as it turns left and becomes Verdugo. Head northeast\, towards the mountains. Make a left on any of the ten streets to Olive Ave where you will turn right. Follow Olive until you reach the Country Club arch. Drive through. Road becomes Country Club Dr. Follow it until road veers right to S. Via Montana. Park on either side of street when the first house on the left comes into view. \n************************** \nThe Fine Print \nPLEASE – Know your limits and abilities. Bring snacks and drink plenty of liquids when hiking. Check weather conditions and dress accordingly and be aware of your surroundings at all times. Watching out for poison oak\, snakes\, ticks\, uneven footing\, spectacular views\, beautiful fauna all while interacting with awesome (usually) fellow hikers can be extremely hazardous\, rewarding and fun. \nThe Farzan Rule: Posted hike times are the time the hike starts or we leave from a posted shuttle location. I’m aware other Meetup groups offer a grace period for late arrivals; we don’t. It’s your responsibility to know the location of the meeting spot and be there and ready to participate at the posted time. If you have any concerns about the directions feel free to contact the organizer of the event\, preferably in advance of the event and not at the start time. I’m of the opinion that it’s not fair to delay an event when the majority of attendees have arrived on-time. (so named after a conversation I had with a certain un-named member) \nRSVP’s: If you RSVP for an event be responsible and update your RSVP if your plans change. If your plans change at the last second and you’re not able to update your RSVP also let us know. In my opinion a no-show is someone who has no regard for following the guidelines we request from our members and will risk being removed from future events that have a limit. \nPLEASE – Know your limits and abilities. \nVHC HIKE RATING SCALE \nRating a hike is subjective\, meaning the difficulty of a hike will be in direct relation to how often you hike and the type of hike you prefer. Keep in mind that any hike can have the following: un-even hiking surfaces\, various obstructions\, water and/or water crossings or bouldering and/or rock hopping. A great hike will have all of these! \n1 – A long walk \n2 – 4 mile hike w/little elevation gain \n3 – 5 mile hike w/up to 1000 ft. elevation gain \n4 – 5+ mile hike w/up to 1500 ft. elevation gain (heart rate increases at times) \n5 – 7+ mile hike w/over 1500 ft. elevation gain (heart rate increasing even more at times) \n6 – 7+ mile hike w/over 2000 ft. elevation gain (at times you might be trying to remember how to perform CPR) \n7 – 5+ mile hike w/over 2000 ft. elevation gain (at times you might be muttering expletives to yourself) \n8 – 10+ mile hike w/over 3500 ft. elevation gain (at times you might be angry with the hike leader) \n9 – 10+ mile hike w/over 5000 ft. elevation gain (at times you might be thinking of reporting the hike leader to the authorities) \n10 – Use your imagination \nClass 3 Scrambling: Scrambling or un-roped climbing. You must use your hands at times to hold the terrain or find your route. This may be caused by a combination of boulders\, steepness and extreme terrain. Some Class 3 routes have ropes in place for assistance. \nDISCLAIMER / RELEASE OF LIABILITY \nIMPORTANT\, PLEASE READ BELOW IN ITS ENTIRETY: \nI am a volunteer (i.e. not liable for the group). Safety is a priority for everyone in the group. Think of this as hiking with a group of friends. \nOutdoor sports and other events we plan can be inherently dangerous and accidents may happen. SUMMARY:Dos Vientos - Easy Intermediate
DESCRIPTION:5.2 miles\, 1140′ gain\, easy-intermediate. \nWarning: Google Maps may take you to the incorrect location\, although the address is correct. Please follow the written directions. \nThe hike starts on the Park View trail\, completely flat along a gravel track that moves around the Dos Vientos Community park. It then gently rises into the surrounding hills\, continuing onto the Powerline trail. \nThe first 1.75 miles has about 350′ of gain and another 150′ of gain on the return\, including an extended incline of about 450 steps. The extended incline is fire road\, so it isn’t especially steep. \nParts are ruggedly strewn with small rubble but there are still clear foot paths along the edge. It will get the heart pumping and beginners will probably curse this extended climb. At the height of this point\, there is a fantastic overlook. \nWe continue another 0.85 miles for another 450′ of gain and 190′ on the return. It continues to the next electrical tower where the trail splits. This leads to the 2\,200 feet high Conejo Mountain in Camarillo\, CA. \nAt the end of this segment\, we’ll stop to share snacks and beverages (https://www.meetup.com/Hiking-Plus/messages/boards/thread/50879772) before returning back the way we came. \nThis trail offers panoramic views of the Oxnard Plain\, the Pacific Ocean\, numerous Channel Islands\, Boney Mountain\, Mugu Lagoon\, and the Topa Topa Mountains. \nInteresting Notes. \nYou will see several plants of note: \nPrickly Pear Cactus \nInside and fruit are edible. Remove needles and scrape to remove hairs\, cut top off\, hollow out to make water container. Burn off needles. Fruit peels easily. Eat seeds and all. Use duct tape to remove thorns from hands. \nLichen \nA composite organism arising from algae\, cyanobacteria\, or both\, and often fungi. They come in many colors. Not related to moss or any plant. They get all their food from photosynthesis\, air\, water\, and minerals in their environment. Most comes from air\, and therefore\, can be used to monitor air pollution. 6% of earth’s land surface is covered by lichens. This is the paint that gives the look of the rocks of Yosemite. 20\,000 known species. Self-contained ecosystems. Some of the oldest living things. Can survive unprotected in space\, surviving vacuum\, fluctuating temperatures\, and cosmic radiation. Used for making dyes\, sometimes by boiling in water. Some are edible\, some poisonous. \nDirections: \nDos Vientos Community Park\n4801 Borchard Rd\nNewbury Park\, CA 91320\n34.175205\,-118.981760 \nFrom the 118: \nWest to CA-23.\nCA-23 south for 7.4 miles.\nUS-101 north for 4.1 miles.\nExit 47B Borchard Rd.\nBorchard Rd. south for 7 miles.\nDos Vientos park entrance on the right. \nFrom CA-23: \nCA-23 south to US-101.\nUS-101 north for 4.1 miles.\nExit 47B Borchard Rd.\nBorchard Rd. south for 7 miles.\nDos Vientos park entrance on the right. \nFrom US-101 (Camarillo/Ventura): \nUS-101 south.\nExit 47A Borchard Rd.\nBorchard Rd. south for 7 miles.\nDos Vientos park entrance on the right. \nHike Stats: \nDifficulty: Easy Intermediate (https://www.meetup.com/Hiking-Plus/messages/boards/thread/50879781)\nDistance: 5.2 miles\nElevation Gain: 1140′\nDistribution: All of the gain is on the way up.\nShape: Out and Back.\nPace: 2.0 mph\nTrail Variations: After 1.5 miles\, there will be several sections of 1000 steps or more that are continuous elevation gain.\nDuration: 3.5 hours.\nDogs: Yes.\nRestrooms: Yes.\nDrinking Fountains: Yes.\nParking: Free in paved lot.\nTrail type: Single track and fire road. Parts of the fire road have heavy gravel and rubble.\nKnown Dangers: Rattlesnakes. \nBelow is the route we will follow. Please take note if you plan on separating from the group\, perhaps for returning right away instead of participating in the snack and beverage share. \nWhat to Bring: \n1 liter of water for every 3 miles.\nSnacks and/or beverages to share (https://www.meetup.com/Hiking-Plus/messages/boards/thread/50879772).\nHiking shoes preferred\, but athletic shoes will be OK.\nFlashlight or headlamp.\nSunscreen and/or hat as needed. \nHosting \nRoute: The host knows the route. \nNavigation: Host memory\, enhanced by GPS navigation as needed. \nHike type: Social. \nWe won’t be hiking at a fast pace because this is a social hike\, not a conditioning hike. There is nothing wrong with stopping\, even if it means every 50 steps. See “How hard is this hike” in the discussion section (LINK https://www.meetup.com/Hiking-Plus/messages/boards/thread/50879781). \nStops: \nThe host may designate stopping points to let others catch up. This hike will include an extended stop for a snack and beverage share. \nWe will stop at junctions to make sure everybody makes any turns or chooses the correct direction at splits\, else something will be used to mark the direction\, usually a large arrow made of baking soda. There may not always be a sweeper designated to be the last hiker. \nEach hiker is responsible for knowing their capability\, only attending events where they are able to sustain the described pace\, for keeping up with the group sufficiently enough to make the turns and not get left behind\, and for making sure the host is notified if they are going to split from the group. \nGroup separation: \nSometimes hikers wish to move significantly ahead and not wait at designated stopping points. Please let the host know. They are on their own regarding route and navigation. \n[FAQ](https://www.meetup.com/Hiking-Plus/pages/23772638/Frequently_Asked_Questions/)\n[Disclaimer / Release of Liability](https://www.meetup.com/Hiking-Plus/pages/29622459/Is_Hiking_Dangerous/)

SUMMARY:Graveyard Canyon EXPLORATORY
DESCRIPTION:Distance: 7-10 miles\, off-trail \nElevation Gain: 1500-3000 feet \nRating: 6/10 ? \nNot for beginners. For intermediate and advanced hikers only. \nThis is a canyon off the East Fork of the San Gabriel River that caught my attention once as I drove by. Based on research online\, it seems to be a wide\, fairly open\, accessible canyon for a few miles\, with a stream running thought it this time of year. At the very top of the canyon is Rattlesnake Peak\, though we won’t be able to make it that far. \nAfter about 3.5 miles\, the canyon becomes much steeper but may still be passable for up to another 1.5 miles. If it looks doable\, those interested can continue on and see how far we can get. \nBe prepared for stream crossings\, some possible bushwhacking\, and possible rock scrambling higher up the canyon. There is NO trail here. \nAlso please watch out for RATTLESNAKES. If you want a scare\, check out this video from Graveyard Canyon\, which is cued up the the relevant time at 16:15: [https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=AB_icvz4_oE&t=975s](https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=AB_icvz4_oE&t=975s) \nWe’ll meet at the large dirt parking area with restrooms along the East Fork Rd\, exactly 2.5 miles from Highway 39. Because there are restrooms and signage here\, an ADVENTURE PASS parking permit may be required – I’m not sure what the rules are these days. \nNOTE: The listed end time for the event is just a guess. We may finish much earlier\, or possibly later\, depending on what conditions we encounter and how far we decide to go. \nThe Farzan Rule: Posted hike times are the time the hike starts or we leave from a posted shuttle location \nPLEASE – Know your limits and abilities. Bring and drink plenty of liquids when hiking. Check weather conditions and dress accordingly and be aware of your surroundings at all times. Watching out for snakes\, ticks\, uneven footing\, spectacular views\, beautiful fauna all while carrying on a conversation with awesome (usually) fellow hikers can be extremely hazardous\, rewarding and fun. Well behaved dogs are welcome on this one\, but need to be picked up after. \n*** \nVHC HIKE RATING SCALE \nRating a hike is subjective\, meaning the difficulty of a hike will be in direct relation to how often you hike and the type of hike you prefer. The Valencia Hiking Crew Meetup Group and its organizers are not trained leaders and we do not confirm the qualifications of any of its members to lead or participate in trips. DESCRIPTION:BEFORE YOU WILL BE MOVED TO THE GOING LIST\, YOU WILL NEED TO UPDATE YOUR CDH PROFILE (The three questions must be answered with a “yes”) IF YOU HAVE NOT ALREADY DONE SO.\nNEED HELP:\ngo to: https://wp.me/P9MbG4-hC \nWe have made a lot of progress on fixing up Guadalasca over the past 3 sessions\, but long sections higher up were devastated by the rain in December! Happily the lower sections we already worked have held up well\, but there is lots to keep us busy higher up. This is a joint project between the Santa Monica Mountains Trails Council and the Concerned Off-Road Bicyclists Association\, and everyone is welcome to join in! \nWe will be driving into the park with 4-wheel drive vehicles. Transportation is limited so be sure to sign up to secure a ride in! \nAt this time State Parks is requiring all volunteers working on state park property to provide valid proof of vaccination against COVID-19. Please bring proof of vaccine to this event. \nWe’ll drive into the park from the meeting point to the work area at 8:30\, so be sure you get there early enough to have your proof of vaccination checked. \nAll tools will be provided\, as well as instructions on how to use them safely and effectively\, by experienced trail crew leaders. No experience needed – everyone works at a rate they’re comfortable with and takes lots of breaks. Bring a snacks and lunch to eat on the trail; we’ll break for lunch about 11:30. \nWear sturdy hiking boots with good lugs\, long pants\, a long-sleeved shirt\, sunglasses\, sunblock and a hat\, and bring water\, snacks. Bring work gloves – we can’t loan you gloves during the pandemic. \nYou can learn more about trail restoration work here http://corbamtb.com/programs/trail-crew.shtml and here http://smmtc.org/trailwork/voltips.php \nParents/guardians are responsible for minors at all times\, and they must constantly and directly supervise children under 14. SUMMARY:Loop Hike to Abandoned Pool\, Bee Rock and Old LA Zoo -- Griffith Park
DESCRIPTION:We don’t get into Griffith Park much but when we do its special. On this trek I’ll take you to an abandoned pool on top of a hill. \nThe pool was originally built in the 1920’s for a girls camp. The camp was destroyed by fire in the 1950s and a new camp was built slightly lower on the hill – as a boys camp. A new girls camp was built as well\, but further west. The pool remained in use by the boy’s camp until 1987 when it was closed after a bigger pool was built in the camp. \nOur hike will begin at the Fern Canyon Nature Trail. We’ll swing through the remains of the Old LA Zoo on the way up the hill to the pool. We’ll take a break at a lonely picnic bench by a memorial to Paul Ritschel\, a Sierra Club member who led monthly night hikes in the Park from 1969 to 1972. \nOn our return we’ll (trespass) through the new camp\, visit Bee Rock and another section of the Old Zoo \nWe’ll stay off the wide trails/roads as much as possible (of course) and on ridge-top use trails instead. The NO FIREROADS rule will be in effect! \nHike is about 6.5 miles with 1800 ft total ascent and rated DIFFICULT due to terrain

DESCRIPTION:Hello Fellow Hikers\,\nWill be hitting three peaks on this one. Jonathan will be our event leader and we will be following his route that will take us to Rex and the Towers and Elliot peak. Expect a workout. The area is still so green and the wild flowers are everywhere now. But the views on top of the peaks will be the best part! This will be more of a hard moderate with some steep inclines but also gradual inclines between. This hike may be to hard for beginners hikers as will be doing 2\,000 elevation gain. I’ll be listing a Alltrails link for the purpose of directions to our meeting site but we will not be doing that exact route on AllTrails…\nhttps://www.alltrails.com/trail/us/california/elliott-peak-via-western-plateau-trail \nTRail loop\nMiles 8.5\nElevation Gain 2\,000\nRated hard moderate\nDogs allowed but will have some steep sections and maybe some scrambling\nParking free dirt lot \nAs of now there is no sweeper for this hike so please know if you feel you can not finish for any reason please turn back early. \nPlease check back on hike info as rain\, heat advisory\, strong winds or low attendance may cause the hike to be rescheduled \nWe will always follow Jim’s Golden Rules:\n1. Hike your own hike\n2. Please stop at every junction and split to wait for others to catch up \nPlease remember to bring all essentials you’ll need for a hike \nAnd last….The Organizer\, Co Organizer\, Assistant Organizers and Event hosts in this group are not professional guides. SUMMARY:St. Francis Dam Disaster Site and Historical Landmark – Santa Clarita
DESCRIPTION:BEFORE YOU WILL BE MOVED TO THE GOING LIST\, YOU WILL NEED TO UPDATE YOUR CDH PROFILE (The three questions must be answered with a “yes”) IF YOU HAVE NOT ALREADY DONE SO.\nNEED HELP? Go to: [https://wp.me/P9MbG4-hC](https://wp.me/P9MbG4-hC) \nHigh winds\, rain\, and hot weather will cancel this hike. \nA little history: \nIn 1924\, construction began on the ill fated St. Francis Dam\, located in San Francisquito Canyon\, about 11 miles northeast of Valencia. Its chief engineer was William Mulholland. Construction completed in 1926. By 1928\, the dam was at its full capacity\, it held 19 billion gallons of water. \nOn the morning of March 12\, 1928\, muddy puddles began seeping through the walls of the dam. Mulholland and his assistant\, and the dam keeper\, inspected the area and verified that it’s safe. Twelve hours later\, at 11:57 pm\, the St. Francis Dam collapsed. Its tidal wave killed 431 people on record\, and hundreds more were just gone. Bodies were washed as far as Ventura\, 50 miles away\, and some were found on the shores of Mexico. \n[content-egg module=Amazon template=simple] \n***************************************

DESCRIPTION:4.2 miles\, 700′ gain\, easy-intermediate. This hike has a fit-beginner option: 2.7 miles\, 500′ gain\, described at the end of this description. \nThis is a pot-luck hike. We’ll be stopping at the 3/4 point by a picnic table\, so please bring food and drink to share\, and any utensils your items might require. \nWe have had occasions where there were no utensils\, so it might be wise to at least bring your own. \nWe start at the Conejo Canyons Trailhead at Conejo Center Dr in Newbury Park (1993 Rancho Conejo Blvd.). \nWe’ll hike downhill from the trailhead for 0.6 miles. We’ll continue uphill for 0.6 miles on the Western Plateau trail. SUMMARY:Inspiring & Challenging STEEP “Kill ‘Em Quick” Moonlight Hike
DESCRIPTION:STATS\nDifficulty: 4/10\, Moderate but steep uphill\nLength: 4.2 miles Out and Back\nDuration: 2 ¼ hours plus breaks\nElevation Gain & Loss: 1350’; Peak: ?’\nView: Ridge Views\nDetails: This hike has some STEEP moments up and down \nTRAILHEAD INFO / FULL DESCRIPTION\nPark at 7303 Alpine Way\, Tujunga\, CA 91042\nThis hike is the Kill ’em Quick Trail. You start at the end of Alpine Way in Sunland-Tujunga. At the end of Alpine Way park and you will see an entrance to a dirt road. Walk up the dirt road and when you come to the top bear left. You are on Graveyard Truck Trail at this point. Continue to follow Graveyard Truck Trail for about 15 to 20 minutes. Look for a white sign that says “KEQ.” This is the entrance to Kill ’em Quick Trail. The trail starts to climb up the mouth of the canyon and then goes alongside the canyon. Once you are back in the canyon\, the trail cuts up and you begin a steep climb. The trail itself has some areas that are washed out. There is abundant loose rock on the trail and a few spots where you are just walking over piles of rocks. The trail climbs to the ridge and there are some great views. If you like hikes where total annihilation is your end goal\, this hike is great for it. Be careful on the way down because there is loose rock and dirt. \nNight-hiking in LA is amazing! Trails are practically empty\, breeze is cool\, & the beautiful city below you offers unlimited full-definition entertainment! \nWe take short rest stops as needed. SUMMARY:BRIDGE TO NOWHERE (A WET AND WILD TREK)
DESCRIPTION:This will be an all day wet and wild event for the water lovers in our group. Please don’t sign up if you melt when getting wet\, because you’ll either get wet crossing or walking in the river. Not to mention one hell of a water fight will be taking place at the larger pools among all that sign on. \nBRING THOSE WATER CANNONS AND RIVER SHOES. \nThis Wednesday it’s time to cool off\, now that warmer weather is here\, by trekking along the East Fork of the San Gabriel River to The Bridge to nowhere. The route there will require many river crossings. Most likely we’ll be getting our feet wet\, so wear appropriate footwear for this. With all the cool water along the way\, there’s no excuse for overheating on this trek. It’s much slower navigating along this river than our usual hikes that have trails. We’ll be rock hopping and scrambling when not on some kind of trail. There are several “use” trails\, many of them marked with cairns. While there is no “correct” route\, they all do go to the same place\, so we’ll just keep trying to follow the river. Bring more water than you normally would bring for a 10 mile hike\, since it will be very warm in the canyon. I most likely will be staying cool by the WWW constantly splashing river water on me or submerging in pools as needed. \nMEETUP DATE AND TIME: Wednesday March 16th at 7:00 a.m. \nMEETUP LOCATION: Those out my way can meet me in Woodland Hills at 7:00 a.m. and take off from there in a car pool. Meet at the corner of Leonora Dr. and Ponce Avenue. Ponce Ave. is the first street east of Fallbrook. We can park on Ponce which is not in front of any homes. \nALTERNATE MEETUP LOCATION: If interested in doing this event but our meetup location won’t work for you\, then meet us at the trailhead. From the Azusa Ave/CA-39 exit off the 210\, head north for 11.8 miles\, then turn right onto East Fork Road. In 3.3 miles\, stay to the right to keep on East Fork Road and in 1.9 miles make a sharp left onto Camp Bonita Road. This road ends at the trailhead. I’ll meet you there at 8:30 a.m. ONLY IF YOU LET ME KNOW THAT YOU WILL BE THERE. SUMMARY:Happy Camp - Suitable for beginners
DESCRIPTION:Beginner. 5 miles\, 500′ gain. \nThis hike is entirely fire-road and is almost completely flat. That means it’s wide enough for a vehicle. To make up for the lack of elevation\, the distance will be about 5 miles round trip. \nWhen I hiked this\, I never noticed any real gain but ended up measuring about 500′ from the combination of small hills. Some of this trail is sandy\, so walking it at times can be more difficult than just walking a dirt trail\, almost like walking on the beach. \nWhat this hike lacks in ridge-top views\, it makes up for in its varied surrounding flora: There are a lot of different interesting plants on this hike. \nThe walk starts out in the gravel parking lot next to the Rustic Canyon golf course parking lot\, where there is a trail head along the north edge and plenty of room for at least 35 cars. We’ll walk along the fire road next to the golf course for 1.3 miles until making a left at a junction. \nPlease be advised that from that point on\, there are no dogs allowed. At some point as we continue\, the ground will become very sandy that I’m told is the result of horses. \nThe landscape will change from very dry to very green\, eventually coming to a spot where sometimes you can hear the water running along the left down in a canyon. We’ll stop there to share some snacks\, beverages\, and have a social event for 30-60 minutes\, before turning around to head back the way we came. \nInteresting Notes: \nYou will see several plants of note\, and if you are interested\, you can look them up before the hike. I’ll mention several\, and then fully describe a couple more: \nRussian Thistle\, Black Walnut\, Caterpillar Phacelia\, White Sage\, Yucca\, Bladder Pod. \nJimson Weed \nThe plant got its name from Jamestown\, because in 1676\, Jamestown\, VA soldiers ate this plant in their salad and became psychotic for 11 days. \nThe leaves and seeds are used to make medicine. Despite serious safety concerns\, jimson weed is used to treat asthma\, cough\, flu (influenza)\, swine flu\, and nerve diseases. Some people use it as a recreational drug to cause hallucinations and a heightened sense of well-being (euphoria). All parts of Datura plants contain dangerous levels of the tropane alkaloids atropine\, hyoscyamine\, and scopolamine\, which are classified as deliriants\, or anticholinergics. \nThe risk of fatal overdose is high among uninformed users\, and many hospitalizations occur amongst recreational users who ingest the plant for its psychoactive effects. As much as a 5:1 variation can be found between plants. It contains chemicals such as atropine\, hyoscyamine\, and scopolamine. \nThese chemicals interfere with one of the chemical messengers (acetylcholine) in the brain and nerves. Ingesting only a few small seeds can result in serious poisoning and may be life-threatening. Ingesting even small amounts of the plant or seeds can result in confusion\, frightening hallucinations\, the inability to urinate or sweat\, overheating\, and a rapid heart rate. \nDepending on the amount ingested\, these troubling symptoms can last hours to many days\, and in some cases can lead to death. Touching he plant can cause dermatitis. \nCastor Bean \nThe seeds contain ricin and are poisonous to people\, animals and insects. Ricin is one of the most poisonous naturally occurring substances known. Perhaps just one milligram of ricin can kill an adult. Walter White made a poison cigarette by putting in ricin\, in the series Breaking Bad. \nThe symptoms of human poisoning begin within a few hours of ingestion. If death has not occurred in 3-5 days\, the victim usually recovers. The seed cause skin irritation at the contact point. It is said that just one seed can kill a child. \nIn 1978\, ricin was used to assassinate Georgi Markov in 1978\, a Bulgarian journalist who spoke out against the Bulgarian government. He was stabbed with the point of an umbrella while waiting at a bus stop near Waterloo Station in London. They found a perforated metallic pellet embedded in his leg that had presumably contained the ricin toxin. \nCastor beans are pressed to extract castor oil which is used for medicinal purposes. Ricin does not partition into the oil because it is water-soluble\, therefore\, castor oil does not contain ricin\, provided that no cross-contamination occurred during its production. \nUsed in bone marrow transplants\, cancer therapies\, AIDS treatment\, and can selectively destroy neurons by injecting ricin into nerves. \nDirections: \nHappy Camp\n15100 Happy Camp Canyon Rd.\nMoorpark\, CA 93021\n34.311460\,-118.866110\nIf you use this address\, we’ll be just beyond the far southeast corner of the clubhouse lot. \nFrom the 118 and from the 101:\nHead to towards the intersection of I-118 and CA-23.\nExit 19A Princeton Ave.\, turn right (north) if coming from the east\, left coming from CA-23.\nPrinceton Ave. north for 0.2 miles.\nLeft on Campus Park Dr. for 0.4 miles and continue on Happy Camp Canyon Rd. for 0.7 miles.\nFollow signs to Rustic Canyon golf course.\nPark on the right in gravel lot\, just before golf course paved lot. \nThe Hike:\nDistance: 5 miles\, 3 hours\nElevation Gain: 500′\nDifficulty (https://www.meetup.com/Hiking-Plus/messages/boards/thread/50879781): Easy\nPace: 2.0 mph\nDogs: No. This is a park rule\, not mine. SUMMARY:Conejo Spring Trail Work Day and Lunch
DESCRIPTION:BEFORE YOU WILL BE MOVED TO THE GOING LIST\, YOU WILL NEED TO UPDATE YOUR CDH PROFILE (The three questions must be answered with a “yes”) IF YOU HAVE NOT ALREADY DONE SO.\nNEED HELP:\ngo to: https://wp.me/P9MbG4-hC \nCome and join us to fix up one of Conejo Valley’s most popular trails – the Santa Rosa Trail above the Wildwood Mesa! After a two year hiatus\, we are finally able to get together as a group to restore our local trails. Overdue for attention\, the Santa Rosa Trail has suffered a lot in the past two years. First with little rain and vastly increased use\, the trail was dusty with lots of small loose rocks. Then the rain this past December washed all that and more away. \nMeet at the INNER parking lot at Wildwood at 7:30 am to register and be ready to walk to the work area by 8. We will return at noon for a Thank You lunch. To speed up the sign-in process\, we would appreciate it if you could register online in advance at [https://cosf.org/events/register/](https://cosf.org/events/register/) \nThanks for registering in advance! \nAll tools will be provided\, as well as instructions on how to use them safely and effectively\, by experienced trail crew leaders. No experience needed – everyone works at a rate they’re comfortable with and takes lots of breaks. \nWear sturdy hiking boots with good lugs\, long pants\, a long-sleeved shirt\, sunglasses\, sunblock and a hat\, and bring water\, snacks. Bring work gloves. \nYou can learn more about trail restoration work here [http://corbamtb.com/programs/trail-crew.shtml](http://corbamtb.com/programs/trail-crew.shtml)\nand here [http://smmtc.org/trailwork/voltips.php](http://smmtc.org/trailwork/voltips.php) \nParents/guardians are responsible for minors at all times\, and they must constantly and directly supervise children under 14. SUMMARY:Laurel Canyon - The Bushwhack is Back
DESCRIPTION:Due to the Sand Fire in 2016 and the Creek Fire the following year\, it was believed that the entire canyon we once spent a couple hours bushwhacking through was no longer dense with California bay laurel\, fallen trees as obstacles and dreaded poison oak. When we finally visited in 2018 we found the entrance completely bare. But as we ventured down\, we found the canyon even more overgrown and dense than before. The 1.3 mile canyon took us 2h 30min to complete. The four bad ass women I was with laughed and smiled the whole way and it is still one of my favorite hikes to this day. Be prepared for another slow decent…..and we might still need a rope 🙂 \nWater crossings could be knee deep and unavoidable so wear shoes you can get wet. \nBring a mask if you decide to carpool from 7-11. \nWrite up is Don’s: \nThe Stats \nDistance: 8 miles \nElevation gain: 1400 ft \nTrail: Loop\, fire road\, creek crossing and plenty of bushwhacking \nRating: 7/10 \nNOT for beginners \nNo Sweep\, must be able to keep up with the group \nThe Plan \nThis is a hike we’ve done a few times now with some interesting experiences so far. It’s starts out near the Dillon Divide on a rather plain fire road\, the Mendenhall Ridge\, for a bit over 3 miles. Next we head down a little used\, maybe never used\, Laurel Canyon. While only a bit more than a mile this will be the adventurous part of our trek. On a previous visit this 1 mile portion took us almost 2 hours to navigate including one down climb that will require some teamwork and possibly a rope to get through. At the bottom of the canyon we’ll be in Pacoima Canyon which will loop us around and back to our cars. There could be a bit of water in Laurel Canyon and on our previous trip her there was a very shallow creek in Pacoima Canyon. A couple other items of note from previous hike was a plant that seemed to stick to us and thus earned the name “salad hike” and also the power lines above the fire road had some unusual effect on peoples hair. There will be some poison oak as well as a couple of down climbs that will require fellow hiker assistance with one possibly requiring a rope. Also\, I guess the Dutch Louie mine is somewhere down in the canyon that we’ve overlooked on previous visits. We’ll be looking for it this time. See below. \nOh\, and there is NO TRAIL down Laurel Canyon. \nThe Story \nPacoima Canyon drains the northwest corner of the San Gabriel mountains\, flowing west between two substantial ridges before slicing south through precipitous terrain to emerge into the San Fernando Valley. In its gentler upper reaches it is a broad and gradual canyon but with quite precipitous walls created by Mendenhall Ridge on the south and Santa Clara Divide ridge to the north. Both ridges can be accessed using dirt roads called\, unsurprisingly\, the Mendenhall Ridge Road and the Santa Clara Divide Road. These allow access to a series of steep lateral canyons some of which make for good off-trail adventures. In this hike we drop into Laurel Canyon where it crosses Mendenhall Ridge Road and descend into Pacoima Canyon. Laurel is an easy\, north-facing wooded canyon that is mostly brush-free and has just a few down climbing challenges. \nhttps://secure.meetupstatic.com/photos/event/1/b/5/3/600_433806995.jpeg \nDutch Louie?? or a tired VHC Hiker after descending Laurel Canyon. \nHERMIT DIGS OWN GRAVE \nThen Goes Home to Die\, Leaving Pathetic Note to Coroner. \nLos Angeles Dispatch to New York Sun. \n“Dutch Louie\,” known throughout the Southwest as the hermit of the Pacoima\, a few days ago walked slowly from his hut\, which is 5 miles from Pacoima\, and selecting a spot on the hillside\, dug himself a narrow grave. \nThen he returned to his home\, dressed himself in his best clothing and lay down to die. All that he told in a letter he wrote to the coroner just before he lay down for the last time. \nThe note\, a pitiful chronicle of hope that never died\, asked the coroner to bury him without ceremony in the grave he had dug and to mark it only with a scant inscription\, “Dutch Louie.” \n“I don’t fear death\,” wrote the hermit. “It is the inevitable wages of life — and I have lived. For scores of years I have lived in the hope of finding the bonanza I had dreamed of and prayed for. I never found it\, but I was cheered to the end by the star of hope.” \nThe body was found by hunters. \nDirections \nMeet at 7-11 at 8:30 to carpool\, or at the trailhead at 9. There is limited parking at the trailhead so don’t leave too much space between cars. \nTake the 210 freeway and exit at Osborne. Exit and go north. Take a left at the first light\, Osborne. Make a left on Lexicon Ave for 7-11. It comes up fast so look for it as soon as you are on Osborne. The address for 7-11 is 11348 Sunburst St\, CA 91342. \nFor the actual trail head\, Osborne becomes Little Tujunga Canyon Road. The trail head is just past mile marker 13.01 (the numbers will be decreasing) where you will find gates on both side of the road. Be sure not to block the gates. Also\, this is just down the road from the Wildlife Waystation which is at mile marker 14.92. By participating in any posted event\, you’re taking responsibility for your own safety and well-being. The Valencia Hiking Crew Meetup Group and its organizers are not trained leaders and we do not confirm the qualifications of any of its members to lead or participate in trips. All participants take full responsibility for their own actions. If you choose to sign up for any Valencia Hiking Crew Meetup events\, you are releasing the Valencia Hiking Crew Meetup Group and it’s organizers from all liability in case of possible injuries as stated in paragraph 6.2 of the Meetup “Terms of Service” located on the bottom of the Meetup website. SUMMARY:🎉🥂15th Anniversary Hike and Potluck +BBQ! 🫕🍗
DESCRIPTION:Wow! Its our 15th anniversary. Let’s celebrate with a PotLuck & BBQ at Oak Canyon Community Park — we’ll do a hike also — and reminisce about the past 1.5 decades and plan for the next. \nOak Canyon Community Park is a beautiful\, 60-acre park with sandstone cliffs and a year-round creek. The park has a nature trail that loops through an oak forest\, crossing several times over Medea Creek. Near the trailhead is manmade waterfall cascading into a duck pond . \nThere are a couple of hiking options from EASY to MEDIUM. We’ll walk through the park and out to the north along the Suicide Trail and return via the China Flats Trail for a loop ending along Medea Creek and the Duck Pond. SUMMARY:Wildwood Park - Las Flores potluck hike - Fit Beginner
DESCRIPTION:**Fit Beginner – 4 miles\, 600′ gain** \nWe start at the Las Flores trailhead where Las Flores dead-ends at Wildwood Park\, and head west. After 1/3 mile\, the trail becomes Wildwood Canyon Trail. We continue for another 2/3 mile and cross a bridge just past the Meadows Picnic area. \nWe’ll make a left\, continuing on Wildwood Canyon Trail\, past the Tee Pee Trail\, behind Paradise Falls\, left at the split\, and after about a mile\, Wildwood Canyon Picnic area will be on the left. There will be several tables. \nThis is a pot luck picnic. Please bring something to eat and drink\, and a little extra to share. If your item requires it\, bring plates and utensils to share. We’ll share snacks and drinks (https://www.meetup.com/Hiking-Plus/messages/boards/thread/50879772) for 60 – 90 minutes\, before heading back the way we came. \n**The Hike**\nDistance: 4 miles\nGain: 600′\nDistribution: Well distributed.\nDifficulty (https://www.meetup.com/Hiking-Plus/messages/boards/thread/50879781): Fit Beginner\nShape: Out and Back.\nPace: approx. 2.0 mph.\nTrail Type: Fire Road\, Single-Track\, and Double-Track.\nDuration: 4.0 hours\nDogs: Yes.\nRestrooms: Yes\nDrinking Fountains: Yes.\nParking: Free along street. \n**What to bring:** 1 liter of water for every 3 miles.\nHiking shoes/boots\nFlashlight or headlamp.\nSunscreen and/or hat as needed.\nSnacks and/or beverages to share. \n**Hosting** \nRoute: The host knows the route. A pic of the route has been posted as part of this description. \nNavigation: Host memory\, enhanced by GPS navigation as needed \nHike type: Social.\nWe won’t be hiking at a fast pace because this is a social hike\, not a conditioning hike. There is nothing wrong with stopping\, even if it means every 50 steps. \nStops:\nThe host may designate stopping points to let others catch up. We will stop at junctions to make sure everybody makes any turns or chooses the correct direction at splits\, else something will be used to mark the direction\, usually a large arrow made of baking soda or sticks in the shape of an arrow. \nGroup separation: Sometimes hikers wish to move significantly ahead and not wait at designated stopping points. Please let the host know. They are on their own regarding route and navigation. \n**Directions** \nLas Flores Trailhead\n604 W Avenida De Las Flores\nThousand Oaks\, CA\, 91360 \n**Release of Liability:** https://www.meetup.com/Hiking-Plus/pages/29622459/Is_Hiking_Dangerous/
