SUMMARY:Wildlife Tunnel Loop - Intermediate
DESCRIPTION:Intermediate – 3 miles\, 1000′ gain. \nThis hike is relatively short\, but the middle portion is a rugged and continuous incline for 1 mile with about 700′ of gain. Even though we’ll be taking this trail at the pace of a social hike\, beginners may will find this hike to be too hard. \nWe’ll start this hike by parking on the south side of the CA-118 at the Rocky Peak exit. We’ll walk west along the Santa Susana Pass Rd. for about 500 feet\, and directly across from Lilac Ln\, we’ll enter a trail. We’ll move along a relatively flat section from 1/2 mile\, then turn right and make a gradual climb until we reach the wildlife tunnel. \nThis is a tunnel underneath the CA-118 freeway\, built so that animals can cross. We’ll regroup here\, then continue up a strenuous and rugged climb for 1 mile until we reach the Rocky Peak Fire Rd. We’ll regroup again\, then turn left for 500′ until we reach the Hummingbird Trail. \nWe’ll find a couple large rocks and a bench there. We’ll have a social event lasting 30 – 60 minutes\, then head down the Rocky Peak Fire Road until it ends at the CA-118 freeway. We’ll then cross the freeway back to our cars. \nInteresting Notes: \nHere are a couple plants you are sure to see on this hike: \nCalifornia Sagebrush \nAromatic when crushed. AKA\, common sage\, coastal sage. Sunflower family. Cowboys used to ride through it and brush up against the pine-shaped leaves\, coming home with the smell on their clothes and giving rise to the nickname “Cowboy Cologne.” Not a true sage. Can be used as a cooking spice and can be made into a tea. Tear off some needles by running your hand up the stalk and smell the aroma. \nPurple Sage \nGrey-green leaves. Aromatic when crushed. Purple flowers. Aka\, Tobacco Sage\, with mild hallucinogenic properties when smoked. Can be used as a spice or made into a tea. Tea has medicinal affects: Antiviral\, gargle for sore throats\, reduce hay fever symptoms and other drying actions. In the last summer\, fall\, and winter months\, the flowers will have turned brown and the leaves take on a greyer color. \nDirections:\nRocky Peak Exit\, South Side of CA-118\nSimi Valley\, CA 93065\n34.268396\, -118.636139 \nFrom the 118\nExit 32 Rocky Peak Rd.\nPark on south of the freeway along Santa Susanna Pass Rd. \nFrom the 101 @ CA-23\nNorth CA-23 for 8.4 miles.\nEast I-118 for 14 miles.\nExit 32 Rocky Peak Rd.\nPark on south of the freeway along Santa Susanna Pass Rd. \nThe Hike:\nDistance: 3 miles\, 3.5 hours\nElevation Gain: 1000′\nDifficulty: Intermediate.\nSee “How hard is this hike” in the discussion section (https://www.meetup.com/Hiking-Plus/messages/boards/thread/50879781).\nPace: 2.0 mph\nDogs: Yes if leashed\, per State law\nRestrooms: No\nDrinking Fountains: No\nParking: Free\, south side of CA-118\nTrail: Single Track\, Double Track\, and rugged water path.\nPurpose: Social \nWhat to Bring:\n1-2 liters of water.\nSnacks and/or beverages to share (https://www.meetup.com/Hiking-Plus/messages/boards/thread/50879772).\nHiking shoes preferred\, but athletic shoes will be OK.\nFlashlight or headlamp. \nDisclaimer / Release of Liability:\nhttps://www.meetup.com/Hiking-Plus/pages/29622459/Is_Hiking_Dangerous/

SUMMARY:Conejo Valley’s Changing Climate: Current Threats & Paths Forward
DESCRIPTION:Join a virtual presentation by conservation ecologist Dr. Sean Anderson who will discuss the threat of climate change to the Conejo Valley\, and what we can do about it\, in the kickoff presentation of the Conejo Open Space Foundation’s (COSF) 2022 Speaker Series. This event will be held via Zoom on Wednesday March 2nd at 7:00 pm. COSF will send instructions on how to join the Zoom webinar to people who sign up (how to do this is described below) the day before the event. The number of attendees is limited so we recommend you sign up immediately! \nAccording to Dr. Anderson\, we are living through an era of unprecedented environmental change in an area experiencing some of the greatest climatic transformations in North America. The Conejo Valley is now burning more frequently\, experiencing drier dries and wetter wets\, and seeing species fade away. While these and related changes are disturbing and sobering\, we are also ground zero for a host of approaches to building a more sustainable community which provide the seeds of hope. He will discuss the current state of affairs of our Conejo Valley region and ways out of the darkness in this presentation with ample time for questions and discussion. \nDr. Anderson is a broadly trained ecologist and conservation biologist who works on a variety of coastal zone management issues across California\, Louisiana\, the South Pacific\, and Middle East. He chairs the Environmental Science and Resource Management Program at California State University Channel Islands and is an elected or appointed member of numerous state\, federal\, and international governmental and scientific advisory boards. His energetic\, innovative\, and award-winning teaching and conservation efforts are often covered in the popular press and spawned the eponymous “Sean Anderson” character (played by Josh Hutcherson) in Warner Brother’s Journey to the Center of the Earth film franchise. \nTo sign up for this event\, go to \nhttps://cosf.org/events/meetup/ \nand fill in the form. While this is a free event\, COSF suggests a donation of $10. Your support for future Speaker Series presentations and COSF’s other activities would be greatly appreciated.

SUMMARY:Long Canyon - Easy cc lollipop - the back way
DESCRIPTION:5 miles\, 800′ gain\, Easy Intermediate.\nThe address is not the address of the hike\, but a nearby address that should get you to pass by the trailhead. \nThis route would be classified as fit-beginner\, if not for an extended incline that runs for almost a mile in the middle of the hike. It is a fire road with a continuous climb. Fit beginners should be OK on this hike\, although they may wish to take several breaks during the middle ascent. \nWe’ll be stopping at various points to regroup and this is not a conditioning hike. It is a social hike. \nWe will start by heading the back way from the Long Canyon trailhead parking lot and around to an asphalt road. Then we’ll make our way down to the Autumn Ridge trail\, where we’ll head for almost a mile up to the five-points junction. We’ll make a sharp left\, then another left after about 500′ at the bench\, heading down the Sunrise trail. \nAfter about 1000′\, we’ll head into the rocks into or next to the Rockcuzzi\, a natural circular indentation in the rocks\, hidden from view unless you know were it is\, for a snack share social event for 30-60 minutes. \nFinally\, we’ll continue down the Sunrise trail\, take the Woodridge Loop trail back to the asphalt road\, then head back the way we came along the Woodridge Connector back to the trail head parking lot. \nA picture of the route is posted as part of the description. \nInteresting Notes: \nTurkey Mullein \nSmashed leaves can be thrown into the water to stupefy fish\, causing them to float to the surface\, a practice illegal in most states. The seeds are not toxic to birds and are enjoyed especially by doves and wild turkeys. \nAncient Greeks rolled and dried the leaves\, then used them as wicks for oil lamps. It stalks were used as torches burned at funerals. Many tribes employed the use of mullein leaf tea for coughs\, colds\, and rheumatism. They considered it to be analgesic\, anti-inflammatory\, antispasmodic\, and expectorant. The astringent and demulcent properties of the leaf tea were found useful in cases of diarrhea. \nWild Oats \nThe mature seed of the plant is used as a cereal grain. All oats have edible seeds\, although they are small and hard to harvest in most species. Oats are hard to tell apart from weedy relatives\, so the term “sowing wild oats” came to be used to describe unprofitable activities and destructive sexual liaisons of an unmarried young male that could result in children being born out of wedlock. \nHike \nDistance: 5 miles\nGain: 800\nDistribution: Most of the incline is in the middle of this hike. It is a fire road incline of about 1 mile.\nDifficulty (https://www.meetup.com/Hiking-Plus/messages/boards/thread/50879781): Easy Intermediate.\nShape: Lollipop\, counter-clockwise.\nPace: 2.0 mph.\nTrail Type: Fire road\, single and double track. Areas of sand\, gravel\, and rock\, some of it rugged.\nDuration: 3.5 hours\nDogs: Yes. Leash as required by law.\nRestrooms: No\nDrinking Fountains: No.\nParking: Free in the paved parking area in front of the trail head. \nWhat to bring:\n1 liter of water for every 3 miles.\nSnacks and/or beverages to share (https://www.meetup.com/Hiking-Plus/messages/boards/thread/50879772).\nHiking shoes preferred\, but athletic shoes will be OK.\nFlashlight or headlamp.\nSunscreen and/or hat as needed. \nHosting \nRoute: The host knows the route.\nNavigation: Host memory\, enhanced by GPS navigation as needed.\nHike type: Social.\nWe won’t be hiking at a fast pace because this is a social hike\, not a conditioning hike. There is nothing wrong with stopping\, even if it means every 50 steps. See “How hard is this hike” in the discussion section (LINK (https://www.meetup.com/Hiking-Plus/messages/boards/thread/50879781)). \nThis description has a picture of the route. Those that wish to return immediately instead of hanging around during the snack and beverage share\, should memorize the route so they can safely return on their own. \nStops:\nThe host may designate stopping points to let others catch up. This hike will include an extended stop for a snack and beverage share at the 2/3 point along the hike. \nWe will stop at junctions to make sure everybody makes any turns or chooses the correct direction at splits\, else something will be used to mark the direction\, usually a large arrow made of baking soda. There may not always be a sweeper designated to be the last hiker. \nEach hiker is responsible for knowing their capability\, only attending events where they are able to sustain the described pace\, for keeping up with the group sufficiently enough to make the turns and not get left behind\, and for making sure the host is notified if they are going to split from the group. \nGroup separation:\nSometimes hikers wish to move significantly ahead and not wait at designated stopping points. Please let the host know. They are on their own regarding route and navigation. \nDirections: \nWhere of Long Canyon Rd. and S. Wood Ranch Pkwy. intersect in Simi Valley. There is a free paved parking lot at the trailhead on the southwest corner. \nFrom CA-23 and I-101:\nNorth CA-23\, exit Olsen Rd.\nRight (east) on Olsen Rd.\, which becomes Madera Rd.\, for 2 miles.\nRight (south) on N. Wood Ranch Pkwy.\, which becomes S. Wood Ranch Pkwy.\, for 2 miles.\nRight at dead end (intersection with Long Canyon Rd.) and immediate left into parking lot.\nTrailhead at the opposite corner. \nFrom CA-118 and CA-27:\nWest CA-118\, exit 23 onto 1st St.\nLeft (south) on 1st St.\, which becomes Long Canyon Rd.\, for 5 miles.\nCross at dead end (intersection with S. Wood Ranch Pkwy.) and immediate left into parking lot.\nTrailhead at the opposite corner. \nCoordinates of trailhead: 34.228330\, -118.803130\nAddress of a nearby house: 572 Bannister Way\, Simi Valley\, CA 93065. \nArrive early\, because sometimes the parking lot gets full. If this happens\, we’ll need another 15 minutes to carpool from a nearby parking lot. \nRelease of Liability: https://www.meetup.com/Hiking-Plus/pages/29622459/Is_Hiking_Dangerous/

SUMMARY:SCANDINAVIA NORTHERN LIGHTS ADVENTURE
DESCRIPTION:For all the info and to sign up\, go to www.1000treks.com \nYou have been dreaming about this for a long time! Let’s make it happen and let’s go see the Northern Lights in an fun-packed adventure\, visiting three countries in one of the beautiful places in world: Scandinavia. \nCLICK HERE FOR MORE DETAILS AND TO SIGN UP: https://www.1000treks.com/trips/scandinavia-northern-lights-adventure \nHighlights: \n– Visit 3 Scandinavian countries: Finland\, Sweden and Norway. \n– See the Northern Lights from a GLASS IGLOO! That’s right! You’ve seen the pictures online and now you have the chance to actually do it! \n– Have the chance to spend a night in the Arctic Snow Hotel\, a hotel made entirely of ice and snow! \n– Have 11 chances to see the Northern Lights in some of the best places in the world. We will be all-but-guaranteed to see the Aurora not only once\, but several times. Here are some of the unique and amazing ways in which we will see the Lights: \n– From Abisko Sky Station in Sweden\, where we will take a chairlift to what is possibly the best single spot on the planet to see the Northern Lights. \n– From the Lofoten Islands\, considered by many as the most beautiful background in the world for the Northern Lights. \n– While riding an Electric Snowmobile \n– On sled pulled by reindeer. \n– On a sled pulled by huskies. \n– While Floating on a frozen lake wearing a thermal floating suit. \n– While horseback riding surrounded by snow. \n– Snowshoeing through the Laplandish wilderness. \n– On a cruise on the Barents Sea \nWe will also do some amazing and unique activities and have some amazing experiences unique to Scandinavia\, such as: \n– Visit a husky farm and drive your own husky sled \n– Visit and take city tours of Helsinki\, the capital of Finland\, and Oslo\, the capital of Norway. \n– See a real unearthed Viking ship! \n– Take an overnight train from Helsinki to the Finnish Lapland in your own cabin with a bed and shower. A very cool and unique European experience! \n– Take a full day tour and sail on a real icebreaker \n– Go Ice fishing \n– Experience a snow sauna (that’s right!) and a snow Jacuzzi \n– Go on a Finnish sauna where you can go on a sauna\, come out and dip in frozen lake \n– Go Ice climbing \n– Ride a fatbike on the snow \n– Go Ice Karting. \nThese activities and locations are all absolutely amazing. However\, this trip will be even more amazing because we timed it in order to maximize our chances to see the Northern Lights. Displays of the Northern Lights do tend to intensify around the equinox months of March and September because the magnetic fields of the Earth and the Sun’s solar wind are more likely to be in sync. There are no guarantees\, but even stronger displays are therefore more likely around the spring equinox\, which be on March 19. March also tends to be the winter month with the clearest skies. New moon is March 24\, which means not only we will be getting the darkest skies of the month\, but also the ski will be very dark on the 19th. No promises\, but are likely to see some of the most amazing Northern Lights spectacles of the season during our travel dates. \nCLICK HERE FOR MORE DETAILS AND TO SIGN UP: https://www.1000treks.com/trips/scandinavia-northern-lights-adventure

SUMMARY:ZUMA Creek
DESCRIPTION:Don’s crazy routes are what VHC is known for. This was one of his favorites and he usually posted it this time of year around his birthday. I can’t think of a better way to remember and honor him than by finally doing the whole route again. Now that we have some water\, be prepared to get more than just your feet wet! Rock scrambling water lovers only 🙂 \nCar shuttle so be sure to arrive on time. \nWe’re honoring Don and the trails he loved by doing the hikes that he sought out and did so much research on to give everyone such a unique experience. It’s for these experiences that we followed Don\, no questions asked. These aren’t the typical ordinary paths that everyone else follows. These are signature Don T. hikes. They’re off the beaten path\, exploratory\, no name\, forgotten trails that few have dared to seek. Some of these trails are more traveled than others but they all have a touch of Don’s adventurous spirit that remains. We can’t ever replace Don but can remember him and his sense of adventure by following his footsteps\, just like we always did. This write-up is his: \nThe Stats \nDistance: 5.3 miles \nElevation Gain: 1400 feet \nLevel: 9 out of 10\, scenery factor: priceless \nThe Trail: Single track\, rock & boulder hopping\, scrambling\, trailblazing and some bushwhacking. PO avoidance. \nTime: 5-7 hours (How can only 5 miles take so long? You’ll find out.) \n \nThe Plan \nDon’t let the mileage fool ya this is a beautiful\, very RUGGED and STRENUOUS hike through Lower Zuma Canyon\, Upper Zuma Canyon\, and Newton Canyon. There is poison oak everywhere in this canyon so you’ll be determining how sensitive you are to it if you don’t already know. I’d definitely recommend a thorough post hike scrubbing with one of the many PO products on the market. This is a car shuttle (one-way) hike where we start the hike near PCH and end up about 4 miles north of PCH on Kanan Dume Rd. It involves some BUSHWHACKING and mostly CLIMBING OVER BOULDERS. Good balance and rock climbing skills are helpful. Also\, depending on water flow\, you can count on getting your feet wet. \nThe hike begins around open fields\, sycamore trees and laurel sumac bushes. The canyon then narrows and there are oaks and eucalyptus trees along a creek. A good portion of the hike is BOULDERING and some CLIMBING over huge sandstone boulders along Zuma Creek. We’ll stop for a lunch about about 2/3 of the way into our route where Edison Rd intersects Zuma creek. While the trail up to this point will have been a bit of a challenge this is really where the fun starts. Towards the end of the hike\, there’s a steep hill to climb (possibly crawl) up. \nTHIS HIKE TAKES A LOT OF ENERGY!!! (mostly due to climbing up and around the boulders). \nCheck the Weather (http://www.weather.com/weather/today/Malibu+CA+90265?lswe=90265&from=searchbox_localwx) \nBring Lunch. \nRain does not cancel. \n \nThe Area \nMy recommended Poison Oak remedy. Apply “Ivy Off” before the hike. Have a damp wash cloth with pre applied grease cutting dish soap on it in a zip lock. Wash exposed areas at the last water crossing before climbing out of the canyon. Shower with cold water and more dish soap ASAP. \nDirections \nWe’ll meet at the Backbone Trail Trail Head parking on Kanan Dume. \nFrom PCH: go north on Kanan Dume Rd. Kanan Dume is west of Pepperdine\, west of Latigo Canyon Rd\, and east of Trancas Canyon Rd. Go about 4.1 miles. It will be on the left just after the first tunnel. \nFrom the 101 (Ventura Freeway): go south on Kanan Dume Rd. Pass Mulholland and Latigo Canyon Rd. On Kanan you’ll go through two tunnels. The trail head will be on the right just before the third tunnel. \nFrom here we will drive to PCH\, turn right and take another right on Bansall Dr. Take Bansall to the end to start the hike. \n******************************************************* \nThe Fine Print \nPLEASE – Know your limits and abilities. Bring snacks and drink plenty of liquids when hiking. Check weather conditions and dress accordingly and be aware of your surroundings at all times. Watching out for poison oak\, snakes\, ticks\, uneven footing\, spectacular views\, beautiful fauna all while interacting with awesome (usually) fellow hikers can be extremely hazardous\, rewarding and fun. \nThe Farzan Rule: Posted hike times are the time the hike starts or we leave from a posted shuttle location. I’m aware other Meetup groups offer a grace period for late arrivals; we don’t. It’s your responsibility to know the location of the meeting spot and be there and ready to participate at the posted time. If you have any concerns about the directions feel free to contact the organizer of the event\, preferably in advance of the event and not at the start time. I’m of the opinion that it’s not fair to delay an event when the majority of attendees have arrived on-time. (so named after a conversation I had with a certain un-named member) \nRSVP’s: If you RSVP for an event be responsible and update your RSVP if your plans change. If your plans change at the last second and you’re not able to update your RSVP also let us know. In my opinion a no-show is someone who has no regard for following the guidelines we request from our members and will risk being removed from future events that have a limit. \nVHC HIKE RATING SCALE \nRating a hike is subjective\, meaning the difficulty of a hike will be in direct relation to how often you hike and the type of hike you prefer. Keep in mind that any hike can have the following: un-even hiking surfaces\, various obstructions\, water and/or water crossings or bouldering and/or rock hopping. A great hike will have all of these! \n1 – A long walk \n2 – 4 mile hike w/little elevation gain \n3 – 5 mile hike w/up to 1000 ft. elevation gain \n4 – 5+ mile hike w/up to 1500 ft. elevation gain (heart rate increases at times) \n5 – 7+ mile hike w/over 1500 ft. elevation gain (heart rate increasing even more at times) \n6 – 7+ mile hike w/over 2000 ft. elevation gain (at times you might be trying to remember how to perform CPR) \n7 – 5+ mile hike w/over 2000 ft. elevation gain (at times you might be muttering expletives to yourself) \n8 – 10+ mile hike w/over 3500 ft. elevation gain (at times you might be angry with the hike leader) \n9 – 10+ mile hike w/over 5000 ft. elevation gain (at times you might be thinking of reporting the hike leader to the authorities) \n10 – Use your imagination \nClass 3 Scrambling: Scrambling or un-roped climbing. You must use your hands at times to hold the terrain or find your route. This may be caused by a combination of boulders\, steepness and extreme terrain. Some Class 3 routes have ropes in place for assistance. \nDISCLAIMER / RELEASE OF LIABILITY \nIMPORTANT\, PLEASE READ BELOW IN ITS ENTIRETY: \nI am a volunteer (i.e. not liable for the group). Safety is a priority for everyone in the group. Think of this as hiking with a group of friends. \nOutdoor sports and other events we plan can be inherently dangerous and accidents may happen. By participating in any posted event\, you’re taking responsibility for your own safety and well-being. The Valencia Hiking Crew Meetup Group and its organizers are not trained leaders and we do not confirm the qualifications of any of its members to lead or participate in trips. All participants take full responsibility for their own actions. If you choose to sign up for any Valencia Hiking Crew Meetup events\, you are releasing the Valencia Hiking Crew Meetup Group and it’s organizers from all liability in case of possible injuries as stated in paragraph 6.2 of the Meetup “Terms of Service” located on the bottom of the Meetup website. Your personal safety depends on your own judgment and experience.

SUMMARY:Josephine Peak via Colby Canyon - A Loop Hike
DESCRIPTION:By special request…. \nWant to hike to a mile-high summit in the San Gabriel Mountains with grand views over Los Angeles? Set your calendar for Josephine Peak via Colby Canyon in the front range of the San Gabriel Mountains. \nStarting on Angeles Hwy\, we’ll be taking the scenic rout to the summit ascending Colby Canyon along a narrow trail to Josephine Saddle. There we will cross a ridge to take Josephine Peak Road up to the 5\,558-foot summit and pull in expansive views north and west over Big Tujunga Canyon and southwest out of the mountains toward downtown Los Angeles and surrounding cities. \nWe’ll return via the wide Josephine Peak Fireroad\, the Nature’s Canteen Trail and a bit of Hwy for a 8 mile loop with about 2\,700 ft total ascent. The hike is rated DIFFICULT due to terrain. See the hike rating guide: https://www.hikingwithdean.com/hike-rating-guide/ \nThis is my first time in the area and descriptions are based on other people’s hikes. My research indicates no Adventure Pass is needed. \n**DIRECTIONS** \nWe’ll park and meet at the Colby Canyon trail head. There is additional parking beyond the trailhead \n**To get to the trailhead:** From the 210 Freeway in La Cañada Flintridge\, take Angeles Crest Highway (CA 2) northwest for 10 miles to a dirt turnout on the left (north) side of the road\, 0.8 miles past Clear Creek Information Center. Colby Canyon Trail begins from the left (west) side of the turnout.

SUMMARY:Potrero – All paved – Easy Intermediate
DESCRIPTION:5.75 miles\, 700′ gain. Easy Intermediate.\nDo not park on Potrero else risk getting a ticket. You need a permit to park on this street. \nThis hike is a great trail when it might be muddy because almost the entire hike is on an asphalt path through a huge state park (> 20 sq miles). \nThere is an extended incline on the return. \nSince the elevation gain is low and the route is paved\, we’ll be likely hiking a little faster than typical. It’s a little more than 8 miles to go all the way to the ocean. \nAt the 2.9 mile mark\, we’ll find a picnic table 350′ off to the side\, where we’ll stop and have a social event for about an hours before heading back the way we came. There are no turns on this hike\, so as long as you stay on the asphalt path\, you really can’t get lost. \nDirections:\n4161 Potrero Rd.\nThousand Oaks\, CA 91320\n34.156636\, -118.962989 \nNote that when turning left at the dead end to continue on Potrero Rd.\, the sign at the intersection will say S. Reina\, but it is actually only that street if you go right\, and to the left\, it is a continuation of Potrero Rd. \nFrom the west: 101-S\, Exit 48B Wendy Dr.\, turn right.\nFrom the east: 101-N\, Exit 47C Wendy Dr.\, turn left.\nSouth on Wendy Dr. until it deadends at Potrero Rd.\nRight on Potrero Rd. for 0.5 miles.\nLeft to stay on Potrero Rd. (it is Reino if you turn right) for 0.5 miles.\nTurn right on Pinehill Ave. and park. \nWalk 800 feet back to the intersection of Potrero Rd. and Big Sycamore Canyon Rd.\nDo not park on Potrero Rd. \nThe Hike:\nDistance: 5.9 miles.\nGain: 700′\, mostly on the return.\nDistribution: The return section has an extended incline.\nDifficulty: Easy Intermediate.\nShape: Out and Back.\nPace: 2.0 mph.\nTrail Type: Asphalt path.\nTrail Variations: Rolling stroll with an extended incline.\nDuration: 3.5 hours.\nDogs: Yes.\nRestrooms: Yes\, along the way at the start.\nDrinking Fountains: Yes\, along the way at the start.\nParking: Free along Pinehill Ave. No parking on Potrero\, it is for residents with a permit only. \nWhat to bring: 1 liter of water for every 3 miles.\nSnacks and/or beverages to share (https://www.meetup.com/Hiking-Plus/messages/boards/thread/50879772).\nHiking shoes preferred\, but athletic shoes will be OK.\nFlashlight or headlamp. \nHosting\nRoute: The host knows the route. A pic of the route has been posted as part of this description. Navigation: GPS navigation as needed. \nHike type: Social.\nWe won’t be hiking at a fast pace because this is a social hike\, not a conditioning hike. There is nothing wrong with stopping\, even if it means every 50 steps. See “How hard is this hike” in the discussion section (LINK). \nThis hike is out-and-back on an asphalt path\, While it will be acceptable to split from the group moving faster\, slower\, or otherwise at your own pace\, keep in mind if you get ahead\, you must know where we are stopping. \n[FAQ](https://www.meetup.com/Hiking-Plus/pages/23772638/Frequently_Asked_Questions/)\n[Disclaimer / Release of Liability](https://www.meetup.com/Hiking-Plus/pages/29622459/Is_Hiking_Dangerous/)

SUMMARY:Sudden Hike ~ Skyline Trail in Honor of Don T.
DESCRIPTION:For those who never had the pleasure of hiking with Don\, I can’t say enough about what a remarkable person he was and what a profound influence he had on so many lives – how much he put into grow the group\, make it uniquely his own and fill our weekends with memorable adventures\, all while making great friends in the process. You can find hiking groups everywhere but Don had a way of finding the best routes\, on and off the beaten path…and always included a personal touch in his write ups. Every year\, we try to do a birthday hike to remember and honor him. \nAny pace welcome to do the Skyline Trail out and back. The plan is to hike up to the Verdugo Motorway at a moderate pace\, take in the views and head back the way we came. There will be a couple points to stop along the way to take short breaks and regroup. It’s pretty straightforward but will mark the trail\, if needed. Bring layers. It gets cold when we stop for a snack break. \nSTATS \nDistance: 6.5 miles \nElevation Gain: 1700 feet. \nRating: Moderate 5/10\, not for beginners. \nTrail: Fire Road\, Non-maintained Fire Road and Single Track w/very little shade. \nDaylight Saving Time doesn’t end until the weekend so bring a headlamp. \nWe will meet at the Skyline trailhead and make our way to the Verdugo Motorway\, maybe go to one of the towers\, and head back the way we came. When returning to the cars\, please keep in mind this is a residential neighborhood. \nDirections: \nIf heading north on the 5 fwy\, take Olive exit to Olive Ave. Head northeast\, towards the mountains\, until you reach the Country Club arch. Drive through. Road becomes Country Club Dr. Follow it until road veers right to S. Via Montana. \nIf heading south on the 5 fwy\, take the Verdugo Ave exit. Make a left. Follow the road as it turns left and becomes Verdugo. Head northeast\, towards the mountains. Make a left on any of the ten streets to Olive Ave where you will turn right. Follow Olive until you reach the Country Club arch. Drive through. Road becomes Country Club Dr. Follow it until road veers right to S. Via Montana. Park on either side of street when the first house on the left comes into view. \n************************** \nThe Fine Print \nPLEASE – Know your limits and abilities. \nPLEASE – Know your limits and abilities. \nVHC HIKE RATING SCALE \nRating a hike is subjective\, meaning the difficulty of a hike will be in direct relation to how often you hike and the type of hike you prefer. SUMMARY:Dos Vientos - Easy Intermediate
DESCRIPTION:5.2 miles\, 1140′ gain\, easy-intermediate. \nWarning: Google Maps may take you to the incorrect location\, although the address is correct. Please follow the written directions. \nThe hike starts on the Park View trail\, completely flat along a gravel track that moves around the Dos Vientos Community park. It then gently rises into the surrounding hills\, continuing onto the Powerline trail. \nThe first 1.75 miles has about 350′ of gain and another 150′ of gain on the return\, including an extended incline of about 450 steps. The extended incline is fire road\, so it isn’t especially steep. \nParts are ruggedly strewn with small rubble but there are still clear foot paths along the edge. It will get the heart pumping and beginners will probably curse this extended climb. At the height of this point\, there is a fantastic overlook. \nWe continue another 0.85 miles for another 450′ of gain and 190′ on the return. It continues to the next electrical tower where the trail splits. This leads to the 2\,200 feet high Conejo Mountain in Camarillo\, CA. \nAt the end of this segment\, we’ll stop to share snacks and beverages (https://www.meetup.com/Hiking-Plus/messages/boards/thread/50879772) before returning back the way we came. \nThis trail offers panoramic views of the Oxnard Plain\, the Pacific Ocean\, numerous Channel Islands\, Boney Mountain\, Mugu Lagoon\, and the Topa Topa Mountains. \nInteresting Notes. \nYou will see several plants of note: \nPrickly Pear Cactus \nInside and fruit are edible. Remove needles and scrape to remove hairs\, cut top off\, hollow out to make water container. Burn off needles. Fruit peels easily. Eat seeds and all. Use duct tape to remove thorns from hands. \nLichen \nA composite organism arising from algae\, cyanobacteria\, or both\, and often fungi. They come in many colors. Not related to moss or any plant. They get all their food from photosynthesis\, air\, water\, and minerals in their environment. Most comes from air\, and therefore\, can be used to monitor air pollution. 6% of earth’s land surface is covered by lichens. This is the paint that gives the look of the rocks of Yosemite. 20\,000 known species. Self-contained ecosystems. Some of the oldest living things. Can survive unprotected in space\, surviving vacuum\, fluctuating temperatures\, and cosmic radiation. Used for making dyes\, sometimes by boiling in water. Some are edible\, some poisonous. \nDirections: \nDos Vientos Community Park\n4801 Borchard Rd\nNewbury Park\, CA 91320\n34.175205\,-118.981760 \nFrom the 118: \nWest to CA-23.\nCA-23 south for 7.4 miles.\nUS-101 north for 4.1 miles.\nExit 47B Borchard Rd.\nBorchard Rd. south for 7 miles.\nDos Vientos park entrance on the right. \nFrom CA-23: \nCA-23 south to US-101.\nUS-101 north for 4.1 miles.\nExit 47B Borchard Rd.\nBorchard Rd. south for 7 miles.\nDos Vientos park entrance on the right. \nFrom US-101 (Camarillo/Ventura): \nUS-101 south.\nExit 47A Borchard Rd.\nBorchard Rd. south for 7 miles.\nDos Vientos park entrance on the right. \nHike Stats: \nDifficulty: Easy Intermediate (https://www.meetup.com/Hiking-Plus/messages/boards/thread/50879781)\nDistance: 5.2 miles\nElevation Gain: 1140′\nDistribution: All of the gain is on the way up.\nShape: Out and Back.\nPace: 2.0 mph\nTrail Variations: After 1.5 miles\, there will be several sections of 1000 steps or more that are continuous elevation gain.\nDuration: 3.5 hours.\nDogs: Yes.\nRestrooms: Yes.\nDrinking Fountains: Yes.\nParking: Free in paved lot.\nTrail type: Single track and fire road. Parts of the fire road have heavy gravel and rubble.\nKnown Dangers: Rattlesnakes. \nBelow is the route we will follow. Please take note if you plan on separating from the group\, perhaps for returning right away instead of participating in the snack and beverage share. \nWhat to Bring: \n1 liter of water for every 3 miles.\nSnacks and/or beverages to share (https://www.meetup.com/Hiking-Plus/messages/boards/thread/50879772).\nHiking shoes preferred\, but athletic shoes will be OK.\nFlashlight or headlamp.\nSunscreen and/or hat as needed. \nHosting \nRoute: The host knows the route. \nNavigation: Host memory\, enhanced by GPS navigation as needed. \nHike type: Social. \nWe won’t be hiking at a fast pace because this is a social hike\, not a conditioning hike. There is nothing wrong with stopping\, even if it means every 50 steps. See “How hard is this hike” in the discussion section (LINK https://www.meetup.com/Hiking-Plus/messages/boards/thread/50879781). \nStops: \nThe host may designate stopping points to let others catch up. This hike will include an extended stop for a snack and beverage share. \nGroup separation: \nSometimes hikers wish to move significantly ahead and not wait at designated stopping points. Please let the host know. They are on their own regarding route and navigation. \n[FAQ](https://www.meetup.com/Hiking-Plus/pages/23772638/Frequently_Asked_Questions/)\n[Disclaimer / Release of Liability](https://www.meetup.com/Hiking-Plus/pages/29622459/Is_Hiking_Dangerous/)

SUMMARY:Graveyard Canyon EXPLORATORY
DESCRIPTION:Distance: 7-10 miles\, off-trail \nElevation Gain: 1500-3000 feet \nRating: 6/10 ? \nNot for beginners. For intermediate and advanced hikers only. \nThis is a canyon off the East Fork of the San Gabriel River that caught my attention once as I drove by. Based on research online\, it seems to be a wide\, fairly open\, accessible canyon for a few miles\, with a stream running thought it this time of year. At the very top of the canyon is Rattlesnake Peak\, though we won’t be able to make it that far. \nAfter about 3.5 miles\, the canyon becomes much steeper but may still be passable for up to another 1.5 miles. If it looks doable\, those interested can continue on and see how far we can get. \nBe prepared for stream crossings\, some possible bushwhacking\, and possible rock scrambling higher up the canyon. There is NO trail here. \nAlso please watch out for RATTLESNAKES. If you want a scare\, check out this video from Graveyard Canyon\, which is cued up the the relevant time at 16:15: [https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=AB_icvz4_oE&t=975s](https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=AB_icvz4_oE&t=975s) \nWe’ll meet at the large dirt parking area with restrooms along the East Fork Rd\, exactly 2.5 miles from Highway 39. Because there are restrooms and signage here\, an ADVENTURE PASS parking permit may be required – I’m not sure what the rules are these days. \nNOTE: The listed end time for the event is just a guess. We may finish much earlier\, or possibly later\, depending on what conditions we encounter and how far we decide to go. \nThe Farzan Rule: Posted hike times are the time the hike starts or we leave from a posted shuttle location \nPLEASE – Know your limits and abilities. Bring and drink plenty of liquids when hiking. Check weather conditions and dress accordingly and be aware of your surroundings at all times. Watching out for snakes\, ticks\, uneven footing\, spectacular views\, beautiful fauna all while carrying on a conversation with awesome (usually) fellow hikers can be extremely hazardous\, rewarding and fun. Well behaved dogs are welcome on this one\, but need to be picked up after. \n*** \nVHC HIKE RATING SCALE \nRating a hike is subjective\, meaning the difficulty of a hike will be in direct relation to how often you hike and the type of hike you prefer.

DESCRIPTION:BEFORE YOU WILL BE MOVED TO THE GOING LIST\, YOU WILL NEED TO UPDATE YOUR CDH PROFILE (The three questions must be answered with a “yes”) IF YOU HAVE NOT ALREADY DONE SO.\nNEED HELP:\ngo to: https://wp.me/P9MbG4-hC \nWe have made a lot of progress on fixing up Guadalasca over the past 3 sessions\, but long sections higher up were devastated by the rain in December! Happily the lower sections we already worked have held up well\, but there is lots to keep us busy higher up. This is a joint project between the Santa Monica Mountains Trails Council and the Concerned Off-Road Bicyclists Association\, and everyone is welcome to join in! \nWe will be driving into the park with 4-wheel drive vehicles. Transportation is limited so be sure to sign up to secure a ride in! \nAt this time State Parks is requiring all volunteers working on state park property to provide valid proof of vaccination against COVID-19. Please bring proof of vaccine to this event. \nWe’ll drive into the park from the meeting point to the work area at 8:30\, so be sure you get there early enough to have your proof of vaccination checked. \nAll tools will be provided\, as well as instructions on how to use them safely and effectively\, by experienced trail crew leaders. No experience needed – everyone works at a rate they’re comfortable with and takes lots of breaks. Bring a snacks and lunch to eat on the trail; we’ll break for lunch about 11:30. \nWear sturdy hiking boots with good lugs\, long pants\, a long-sleeved shirt\, sunglasses\, sunblock and a hat\, and bring water\, snacks. Bring work gloves – we can’t loan you gloves during the pandemic. \nYou can learn more about trail restoration work here http://corbamtb.com/programs/trail-crew.shtml and here http://smmtc.org/trailwork/voltips.php \nParents/guardians are responsible for minors at all times\, and they must constantly and directly supervise children under 14. SUMMARY:Loop Hike to Abandoned Pool\, Bee Rock and Old LA Zoo -- Griffith Park
DESCRIPTION:We don’t get into Griffith Park much but when we do its special. On this trek I’ll take you to an abandoned pool on top of a hill. \nThe pool was originally built in the 1920’s for a girls camp. The camp was destroyed by fire in the 1950s and a new camp was built slightly lower on the hill – as a boys camp. A new girls camp was built as well\, but further west. The pool remained in use by the boy’s camp until 1987 when it was closed after a bigger pool was built in the camp. \nOur hike will begin at the Fern Canyon Nature Trail. We’ll swing through the remains of the Old LA Zoo on the way up the hill to the pool. We’ll take a break at a lonely picnic bench by a memorial to Paul Ritschel\, a Sierra Club member who led monthly night hikes in the Park from 1969 to 1972. \nOn our return we’ll (trespass) through the new camp\, visit Bee Rock and another section of the Old Zoo \nWe’ll stay off the wide trails/roads as much as possible (of course) and on ridge-top use trails instead. The NO FIREROADS rule will be in effect! \nHike is about 6.5 miles with 1800 ft total ascent and rated DIFFICULT due to terrain

SUMMARY:St. Francis Dam Disaster Site and Historical Landmark – Santa Clarita
DESCRIPTION:BEFORE YOU WILL BE MOVED TO THE GOING LIST\, YOU WILL NEED TO UPDATE YOUR CDH PROFILE (The three questions must be answered with a “yes”) IF YOU HAVE NOT ALREADY DONE SO.\nNEED HELP? Go to: [https://wp.me/P9MbG4-hC](https://wp.me/P9MbG4-hC) \nHigh winds\, rain\, and hot weather will cancel this hike. \nA little history: \nIn 1924\, construction began on the ill fated St. Francis Dam\, located in San Francisquito Canyon\, about 11 miles northeast of Valencia. Its chief engineer was William Mulholland. Construction completed in 1926. By 1928\, the dam was at its full capacity\, it held 19 billion gallons of water. \nOn the morning of March 12\, 1928\, muddy puddles began seeping through the walls of the dam. Mulholland and his assistant\, and the dam keeper\, inspected the area and verified that it’s safe. Twelve hours later\, at 11:57 pm\, the St. Francis Dam collapsed. Its tidal wave killed 431 people on record\, and hundreds more were just gone. Bodies were washed as far as Ventura\, 50 miles away\, and some were found on the shores of Mexico. \n[content-egg module=Amazon template=simple] \n***************************************

SUMMARY:Hawk Canyon lollipop - Pot Luck hike
DESCRIPTION:4.2 miles\, 700′ gain\, easy-intermediate. This hike has a fit-beginner option: 2.7 miles\, 500′ gain\, described at the end of this description. \nThis is a pot-luck hike. We’ll be stopping at the 3/4 point by a picnic table\, so please bring food and drink to share\, and any utensils your items might require. \nWe have had occasions where there were no utensils\, so it might be wise to at least bring your own. \nWe start at the Conejo Canyons Trailhead at Conejo Center Dr in Newbury Park (1993 Rancho Conejo Blvd.). \nWe’ll hike downhill from the trailhead for 0.6 miles. We’ll continue uphill for 0.6 miles on the Western Plateau trail. We’ll regather at the top of the Peninsula Trail. \nThe trail will be rolling for the next 1 mile\, then drops 360 ft over the next 1/2 mile. At the bottom of the Western Plateau trail\, we’ll take a sharp right up Hawk Canyon. Our picnic spot is 1/4 mile up Hawk Canyon at the table under the trees. \nAfter the potluck\, we’ll continue up Hawk Canyon in our clockwise loop for 0.6 mile where the trail ends back at the Western Plateau trail. Take a left up the hill back to Conejo Center Dr. \n** If you plan on leaving before the group\, please familiarize yourself with the planned route\, which is posted with this description. \nThe Hike: \nDistance: 4.2 miles\nGain: 700′\nDistribution: Well distributed.\nDifficulty (https://www.meetup.com/Hiking-Plus/messages/boards/thread/50879781): Beginner.\nShape: Lollipop.\nPace: 2.0 mph.\nTrail Type: Fire road and single track.\nTrail Variations: Rolling stroll and ramp.\nDuration: 3.5 hours\nDogs: Yes.\nRestrooms: No\nDrinking Fountains: No.\nParking: Free along street. A pic of the route has been posted as part of this description.\nNavigation: Host memory\, enhanced by GPS navigation as needed. \nHike type: Social.\nWe won’t be hiking at a fast pace because this is a social hike\, not a conditioning hike. There is nothing wrong with stopping\, even if it means every 50 steps. See “How hard is this hike” in the discussion section. LINK: https://www.meetup.com/Hiking-Plus/messages/boards/thread/50879781 \nStops:\nThe host may designate stopping points to let others catch up. This hike will include an extended stop for a snack and beverage share at the half way point. This hike does not have any junctions once past the first 500′. \nDirections: \nConejo Cayons\n1993 Rancho Conejo Blvd.\nThousand Oaks\, CA 91320\nPark at: 34.205239\, -118.933403 \nUS-101\, exit Ventu Park Rd\, North.\nVentu Park Rd. North for 1 mile.\nRight on Rancho Conejo Blvd.\, 1.3 miles.\nLeft on Conejo Center Dr.\nPark on the street. \nFit-beginner option: 2.7 miles\, 500′ gain:\nInstead of turning left at the first junction\, turn right. Picnic table will be on the left. This replaces a 2.2 mile section with a 0.7 mile section.\nSee https://www.meetup.com/Hiking-Plus/events/279301083/.\nA link to a pic of the fit-beginner option route link is posted in the comments. \nRelease of Liability: https://www.meetup.com/Hiking-Plus/pages/29622459/Is_Hiking_Dangerous/

SUMMARY:Inspiring & Challenging STEEP “Kill ‘Em Quick” Moonlight Hike
DESCRIPTION:STATS\nDifficulty: 4/10\, Moderate but steep uphill\nLength: 4.2 miles Out and Back\nDuration: 2 ¼ hours plus breaks\nElevation Gain & Loss: 1350’; Peak: ?’\nView: Ridge Views\nDetails: This hike has some STEEP moments up and down \nTRAILHEAD INFO / FULL DESCRIPTION\nPark at 7303 Alpine Way\, Tujunga\, CA 91042\nThis hike is the Kill ’em Quick Trail. You start at the end of Alpine Way in Sunland-Tujunga. At the end of Alpine Way park and you will see an entrance to a dirt road. Walk up the dirt road and when you come to the top bear left. You are on Graveyard Truck Trail at this point. Continue to follow Graveyard Truck Trail for about 15 to 20 minutes. Look for a white sign that says “KEQ.” This is the entrance to Kill ’em Quick Trail. The trail starts to climb up the mouth of the canyon and then goes alongside the canyon. Once you are back in the canyon\, the trail cuts up and you begin a steep climb. The trail itself has some areas that are washed out. There is abundant loose rock on the trail and a few spots where you are just walking over piles of rocks. The trail climbs to the ridge and there are some great views. If you like hikes where total annihilation is your end goal\, this hike is great for it. Be careful on the way down because there is loose rock and dirt. \nNight-hiking in LA is amazing! Trails are practically empty\, breeze is cool\, & the beautiful city below you offers unlimited full-definition entertainment! \nWe take short rest stops as needed. At the peak/midpoint\, we take a nice break to have beer/soda/snacks & look at beautiful scenery. \nPlease RSVP & arrive by 6:55 pm for a 7 pm start. Change your RSVP ASAP if you can’t make it to give others a chance to hike. Repeat “No Shows” will get last priority on future hikes. \nCOMMON-SENSE NOTES\n* COVID-19 guidelines apply: Social Distancing\, Feeling Well\n* Please wear proper hiking boots\n* Consider long pants in case there is some brush along the way\n* Bring plenty of water to drink\n* Bring a headlamp to use after dark\n* Fun\, yummy snacks are always appreciated\n* Bring a Cheerful Attitude 🙂 \nWe hike every Tuesday night & for variety we do other trails that are similar to this one (never boring). \nWe hope to see you! \nSteven & Keith\n213.986.SNOW / 213.507.2221 \n* * * * * * * * * *\nVHC INFO. AND DISCLAIMERS \nFarzan Rule: We start the hike at the Posted hike time-SHARP! \nPLEASE – Know your limits & abilities. A great hike will have all of these! \n1 – A long walk\n2 – 4 mile hike w/little elevation gain (E.G.)\n3 – 5 mile hike w/up to 1000 ft. E.G.\n4 – 5+ mile hike w/up to 1500 ft. E.G. (heart rate increases at times)\n5 – 7+ mile hike w/over 1500 ft. E.G. (heart rate increasing even more at times)\n6 – 7+ mile hike w/over 2000 ft. E.G. (at times you might be trying to remember how to perform CPR)\n7 – 5+ mile hike w/over 2000 ft. E.G. (at times you might be muttering expletives to yourself)\n8 – 10+ mile hike w/over 3500 ft. E.G. SUMMARY:BRIDGE TO NOWHERE (A WET AND WILD TREK)
DESCRIPTION:This will be an all day wet and wild event for the water lovers in our group. Please don’t sign up if you melt when getting wet\, because you’ll either get wet crossing or walking in the river. Not to mention one hell of a water fight will be taking place at the larger pools among all that sign on. \nBRING THOSE WATER CANNONS AND RIVER SHOES. \nThis Wednesday it’s time to cool off\, now that warmer weather is here\, by trekking along the East Fork of the San Gabriel River to The Bridge to nowhere. The route there will require many river crossings. Most likely we’ll be getting our feet wet\, so wear appropriate footwear for this. With all the cool water along the way\, there’s no excuse for overheating on this trek. It’s much slower navigating along this river than our usual hikes that have trails. We’ll be rock hopping and scrambling when not on some kind of trail. There are several “use” trails\, many of them marked with cairns. While there is no “correct” route\, they all do go to the same place\, so we’ll just keep trying to follow the river. Bring more water than you normally would bring for a 10 mile hike\, since it will be very warm in the canyon. I most likely will be staying cool by the WWW constantly splashing river water on me or submerging in pools as needed. \nMEETUP DATE AND TIME: Wednesday March 16th at 7:00 a.m. \nMEETUP LOCATION: Those out my way can meet me in Woodland Hills at 7:00 a.m. and take off from there in a car pool. Meet at the corner of Leonora Dr. and Ponce Avenue. Ponce Ave. is the first street east of Fallbrook. We can park on Ponce which is not in front of any homes. \nALTERNATE MEETUP LOCATION: If interested in doing this event but our meetup location won’t work for you\, then meet us at the trailhead. From the Azusa Ave/CA-39 exit off the 210\, head north for 11.8 miles\, then turn right onto East Fork Road. In 3.3 miles\, stay to the right to keep on East Fork Road and in 1.9 miles make a sharp left onto Camp Bonita Road. This road ends at the trailhead. I’ll meet you there at 8:30 a.m. ONLY IF YOU LET ME KNOW THAT YOU WILL BE THERE. Be patient since I will be fighting traffic getting there.\nhttps://www.google.com/maps/place/34%C2%B014’13.4%22N+117%C2%B045’54.2%22W/@34.237063\,-117.7672297\,17z/data=!3m1!4b1!4m6!3m5!1s0x0:0xb9731c20ce51dc2b!7e2!8m2!3d34.2370634!4d-117.7650406 \nDISTANCE: 9.5 miles \nELEVATION GAIN/LOSS: 1250’/1250′ \nTRAIL DESCRIPTION: River trails. \nTHE PACE: We’re going to stay together\, so no faster than the slowest hiker (a moderate pace). \nDURATION: I’d like to get back to the cars before 5:00 p.m. \nLEVEL: Strong Intermediate trekker with the ability to rock scramble. \nMY CELL# IS: 805-358-5972
