SUMMARY:Hill & Hawk Canyons to trails with wildflower blooms - Gentler Intermediate
DESCRIPTION:This hike will be one of probably three hikes for next Tuesday. This hike will be the slowest\, although it is a gentler intermediate hike. Please only sign up for one hike next Tuesday\, so if you are a jackrabbit\, you might want to wait for Laurie or Steve to post. This figure 8 hike starts at the parking area in Hill Canyon\, we’ll cross the bridge over the runoff creek\, and stroll a mile before turning onto the Hawk Canyon Trail. The Hawk Canyon Trail connects to Western Plateau Trail and Peninsula Trail which runs back down rejoining the Western Plateau Trail to The Hawk Canyon Trail. Then\, we will hike up the hidden trail and descend back into Hill Canyon and follow it all the way back to the parking lot. We will take a few breaks along the way to wait for everyone to catch up. We’ll see lots of green hills and meadows and hopefully an abundance of wildflowers blooming. \nThis ribbon shaped hike will be about 6 miles with an elevation gain of approximately 1000 feet. \nDirections: \nFrom Moorpark Road in the Santa Rosa Valley\, drive west on Santa Rosa Road for 3.7 miles\, turn left (south) on Hill Canyon Road for about 0.6 miles to the parking lot. \nFrom the 101 Freeway in Camarillo\, take exit 52 onto Santa Rosa Road and drive northeast. SUMMARY:Intermediate: Malibu Canyon To Mesa Peak!
DESCRIPTION:Let’s head up to Mesa Peak\, arguably the prettiest and best conditioning hike in the Santa Monica Mountains\, on the Backbone\, and opposite Corral Canyon from last week’s hike. This invigorating out & back route goes up from the Piuma Backbone trailhead for 2.5 miles and then rolls along high above the Pacific for about a mile\, taking us to Mesa Peak through deposits of fossilized ancient sea creatures now a long way from the ocean. Lots of hill work and fantastic views. Total distance will be just under eight miles. \nPlease note the 9:00 a.m. start time. Plan on arriving\, parking\, prepping\, and being ready to go by 8:45 a.m. \nPlease only register for one WTB hike at any given time. \nDirections\nThe Piuma / Backbone Trailhead parking lot is on Malibu Canyon Road / Las Virgenes Road south of Malibu Creek State Park\, and just south of Piuma Road. It is a lot for which you will either need a State Park parking pass or pay to park in the lot. Limited free parking is available 150 yards north at the Las Virgenes / Piuma intersection. \n\nFrom 101\, exit at Malibu Canyon Road and head south. Once you’ve passed the entrance to Malibu Creek State Park and the intersection with Piuma Road\, be prepared to enter the parking lot pretty darn quickly.\nFrom PCH\, turn north onto Malibu Canyon Road. SUMMARY:Palo Comado Lollipop - Easy Intermediate
DESCRIPTION:4.6 miles\, 900′ gain\, easy-intermediate \nThis route takes us through a beautiful canyon via a counter-clockwise lollipop. Most of the hike has a clear view of the sky\, with a few parts that have tree cover. We’ll be stopping at the half-way point for a snack and beverage share. \nWe’ll start at the Palo Comado Canyon – Doubletree Trailhead (coordinates: 34.182480\,-118.751785) and head east for 1/2 mile along the Doubletree Connector Trail. We’ll turn left and head north along the Palo Comado for about 1 mile. We’ll turn right (east) onto the Dead Cow Trail for 0.8 miles\, where we’ll come to an overlook on the left. \nThere\, we’ll stop for a snack and beverage share. Then we’ll continue down the Sheep Corral trail for about 700′\, turning left back onto the Palo Comado trail. From there\, we’ll head south 1.75 miles and turn right (west) onto the Doubletree Connector Trail and the final 1/2 mile back to the trailhead. \nHike\nDistance: 4.6 miles\nGain: 900′\nDistribution: Most of the incline well distributed in the first half.\nDifficulty: Easy Intermediate.\nShape: Lollipop\, counter-clockwise.\nPace: approx. 2.0 mph.\nTrail Type: Fire road and single track. This hike will include an extended stop for a snack and beverage share at the half way point. We will stop at junctions to make sure everybody makes any turns or chooses the correct direction at splits\, else something will be used to mark the direction\, usually a large arrow made of baking soda or some sticks. SUMMARY:Hike at Whiting Ranch - Wahoo's Parking Lot
DESCRIPTION:This side of the park is back open! I’m excited to be back. \nThis hike will be about 5.4 miles total with 820 ft. of elevation gain. \nWe are starting at the parking lot at the Wahoo’s parking lot. We will take Live Oak Trail. This turns into Serrano Road which will take us to Serrano Cow Trail. At this part of the trail\, we usually see a ton of deer\, so cross your fingers! We will get on Sleepy Hollow Trail. This will take us up to Santiago Ranch Road to Cactus Hill. We will take a short break at Four Corners. Then we will come down Whiting Road. SUMMARY:Happy Camp - Suitable for beginners
DESCRIPTION:Beginner\, 5 miles\, 500′ gain \nThis hike is entirely fire-road and is almost completely flat. Some of this trail is sandy\, so walking it at times can be more difficult. There are a lot of different interesting plants on this hike. \nFrom the trail head\, we walk along the fire road next to the golf course for 1.3 miles until making a left at a junction. \nPlease be advised that from that point on\, there is a no dogs allowed sign. At some point as we continue\, the ground will become very sandy. \nThe landscape will change from dry to green\, eventually coming to a spot where sometimes you can hear the water running along the left down in a canyon. We’ll stop there to share some snacks\, beverages\, and have a social event for 30-60 minutes\, before turning around to head back the way we came. \nInteresting Notes: \nYou will see several plants of note\, and if you are interested\, you can look them up before the hike. I’ll mention several\, and then fully describe a couple more: \nRussian Thistle\, Black Walnut\, Caterpillar Phacelia\, White Sage\, Yucca\, Bladder Pod. \nJimson Weed\nThe plant got its name from Jamestown\, because in 1676\, Jamestown\, VA soldiers ate this plant in their salad and became psychotic for 11 days. \nThe leaves and seeds are used to make medicine. Despite serious safety concerns\, jimson weed is used to treat asthma\, cough\, flu (influenza)\, swine flu\, and nerve diseases. Some people use it as a recreational drug to cause hallucinations and a heightened sense of well-being (euphoria). All parts of Datura plants contain dangerous levels of the tropane alkaloids atropine\, hyoscyamine\, and scopolamine\, which are classified as deliriants\, or anticholinergics. \nThe risk of fatal overdose is high among uninformed users\, and many hospitalizations occur amongst recreational users who ingest the plant for its psychoactive effects. As much as a 5:1 variation can be found between plants. It contains chemicals such as atropine\, hyoscyamine\, and scopolamine. \nThese chemicals interfere with one of the chemical messengers (acetylcholine) in the brain and nerves. Ingesting only a few small seeds can result in serious poisoning and may be life-threatening. Ingesting even small amounts of the plant or seeds can result in confusion\, frightening hallucinations\, the inability to urinate or sweat\, overheating\, and a rapid heart rate. \nDepending on the amount ingested\, these troubling symptoms can last hours to many days\, and in some cases can lead to death. Touching he plant can cause dermatitis. \nCastor Bean\nOne of the most poisonous plants in the world. \nThe seeds contain ricin and are poisonous to people\, animals and insects. Ricin is one of the most poisonous naturally occurring substances known. Perhaps just one milligram of ricin can kill an adult. Walter White made a poison cigarette by putting in ricin\, in the series Breaking Bad. \nThe symptoms of human poisoning begin within a few hours of ingestion. If death has not occurred in 3-5 days\, the victim usually recovers. The seed causes skin irritation at the contact point. It is said that just one seed can kill a child. \nIn 1978\, ricin was used to assassinate Georgi Markov in 1978\, a Bulgarian journalist who spoke out against the Bulgarian government. He was stabbed with the point of an umbrella while waiting at a bus stop near Waterloo Station in London. They found a perforated metallic pellet embedded in his leg that had presumably contained the ricin toxin. \nCastor beans are pressed to extract castor oil which is used for medicinal purposes. Ricin does not partition into the oil because it is water-soluble\, therefore\, castor oil does not contain ricin\, provided that no cross-contamination occurred during its production. \nUsed in bone marrow transplants\, cancer therapies\, AIDS treatment\, and can selectively destroy neurons by injecting ricin into nerves. \nDirections: \nHappy Camp\n15100 Happy Camp Canyon Rd.\nMoorpark\, CA 93021\n34.311460\,-118.866110\nNear the northeast corner of the clubhouse lot. \nFrom the 118 and from the 101:\nHead to towards the intersection of I-118 and CA-23.\nExit 19A Princeton Ave.\, turn right (north) if coming from the east\, left coming from CA-23.\nPrinceton Ave. north for 0.2 miles.\nLeft on Campus Park Dr. for 0.4 miles and continue on Happy Camp Canyon Rd. for 0.7 miles.\nFollow signs to Rustic Canyon golf course.\nPark on the right in gravel lot\, just before golf course paved lot. Do not park in the paved golf course lot\, it has a gate that closes at sunset. \nThe Hike\nDistance: 5 miles\, 3 1/2 hours\nElevation Gain: 500′\nDifficulty: Fit Beginner\nPace: 2.0 mph\nDogs: No. A sign half-way says no dogs. I’m not the dog enforcer\, so bring a dog at your own risk.\nRestrooms/Drinking Fountains: Yes\, inside the golf course clubhouse at the start\, but likely closed after dark.\nParking: Free in the gravel lot next to the paved golf course lot.\nTrail: Fire Road and some with powdered sand. \nWhat to Bring:\n1-2 liters of water.\nSnacks and/or beverages to share\nHiking shoes preferred\, but athletic shoes will be OK. This one is Moderate / Moderate +++ mainly for almost 1600 Elevation Gain and Distance. \nHIKE DURATION: About 5 1/2 hours (including a 20-minute snack break) \nDESCRIPTION: The area of China Flat and Simi Peak is in the Santa Monica Mountains This provides a 9-mile hike loop trail near Thousand Oaks. Generally considered a challenging route due to some steep slopes and terrain\, it takes an average 5 to 5 ½ hours to complete. We will meet near a public park and then walk up the street @ 8:30 to the actual trail head. This is an exposed hike and not much shade so make sure to bring appropriate sun protection. \nThe China Flat area is in a wide valley in the Santa Susana Mountains\, surrounded by hills and mountains composed of mainly of sandstone and shale\, as well as other metamorphic rocks. The hiking trail from China Flat to Simi Peak passes through a variety of rock types and landscapes\, including rocky outcrops\, steep canyons\, and grassy meadows. Along the way\, we may encounter fossils\, and other geological features that provide some great eye candy\, not to mention wildflowers. DESCRIPTION:Hooray for Hollywood! There is only one legal way to bike to the Hollywood sign and that’s the way we will take. But that’s not all… \nOur all-road loop starts and ends at the Fern Dell Nature Museum in the Hollywood Hills. We’ll ride west across Hollywood\, mostly on Franklin Ave and Yucca St\, until we hook up with Nicholas Canyon Rd. \nVisit the Amazon eBike Shop \nNicholas Canyon Rd will take us to Mulholland Dr\, then across the 101 to the Hollywood Reservoir. After a loop around the reservoir we’ll ride up and through the Lake Hollywood neighborhood where we connect with Mt Lee Dr. \nMt Lee Dr takes us to Mt Lee\, the site of the Hollywood Sign. Bring a picnic lunch with items to share at the sign. \nWe return by way of Beachwood Dr\, Canyon Dr and other streets in the Hollywood Hills. This hike has a nice gradual walk until we start a gradual climb were we will start our loop. We should encounter wildflowers and mountain views. Our loop will drop down then we will continue until we start our climb back up. From there it will be all downhill and straight back to our cars. It costs $5 to park there\, MasterCard/Visa accepted. \nWe’ll be passing through a beautiful canyon with huge red\, pale purple\, and tan sandstone walls. \nThe hike begins with a steady climb on a fire road for 0.75 mile. We turn right at the junction and begin heading mostly down another fire road for about 1.25 miles. \nThere will be a picnic area on the right\, where we’ll enjoy a potluck picnic. SUMMARY:Ray Miller Trail in La Jolla Canyon ~ Gentler Intermediate
DESCRIPTION:I pre-hiked the trail this morning and it is absolutely stunning with wildflowers beside the awesome blend of ocean and mountain views in Malibu’s La Jolla Canyon. The trail follows the canyon eastward\, away from the ocean. Then\, it quickly brings you back toward the ocean at a gradual incline. There’s a great lookout spot where it gives you a breathtaking view of the Pacific Coast Highway against the backdrop of the Pacific Ocean\, with sweeping views toward Mugu Rock on the west and Sycamore Cove on the east. After another peak\, you’ll start a slight decline that brings you to the fire road where we will turn around. Along the way\, we’ll be treated to magnificent sweeping views of La Jolla and Big Sycamore Canyons\, and of course\, the largest ocean in the world. On a clear day\, the Channel Islands are easily within sight.\nThis is a 5-6 mile out and back hike with an elevation gain/loss of about 1100’. \nDirections: \nFrom Los Angeles\, take the Pacific Coast Highway (PCH) north\, 22 miles from Malibu Canyon Rd. Across the street from Thornhill Broome Beach is the entrance to La Jolla Canyon. It is very clearly marked. Turn right. \nFrom Ventura\, take PCH eastward\, and turn left 4 miles after Las Posas Road. \nHeads up: There is a parking fee in the lot (or free with state parking pass). SUMMARY:INTERMEDIATE hike: Creek Crossings/Waterfall/Wildflowers on Upper Sycamore
DESCRIPTION:One of three hikes posted this Tuesday – please only sign up for one! And if you can’t make it\, please cancel as early as possible so waitlisted folks can get notice and attend. \nNote we will be crossing water (hopefully) up to a dozen times. I strongly recommend waterproof boots and trekking poles. Additionally\, poison oak is abundant in parts of the trail\, so wear pants and long sleeves\, or beware! \nSteve’s write-up from 4 years ago still works! (although I can’t attest to the amphibians facts…..) After the rains over the past couple of months\, there’s plenty of water flowing down the mountainside. Let’s go enjoy the sights and sounds of the water\, and the newly hatched frogs and other amphibians https://www.nps.gov/samo/learn/nature/amphibians.htm. \nThis hike will start at the Rancho Sierra Vista parking lot\, proceed down the asphalt to the bridge\, then up the Upper Sycamore Canyon trail (including a dozen shallow creek crossings – maybe fewer as it’s drying fast) to its junction with Danielson Fire Road. We’ll continue up to the waterfall (one more creek crossing)\, then continue up to the “Peace\, Love\, Joy” memorial at the top of the stream (another creek crossing) that feeds it. Once back down to the big oaks\, we’ll proceed up the dirt fire road enjoying amazing wildflowers\, crossing the meadow diagonally to Satwiwa\, and back to the cars. \nTotal distance is 7 miles or so with roughly 1300 or so feet gain. \nBoots on at 8:45\, ready to hike for a 9:00 a.m. departure!\nPlease do not leave anything of value in your car\, at this or any other trailhead. \nLunch at 3 Amigos. \nDirections: From the east\, exit 101 at Lynn\, and drive southwest 5.5 miles to the turn-off just beyond the “National / State Parks” sign. This hike will go from the beach up to the picnic table on the fire road\, approximately 5.5 miles. We will hike a little slower than the other hikes. If you want to go faster\, join one of the other hikes. Most of the hike is exposed\, but hopefully we will have some fog. Bring sunscreen. \nWe will meet in the Day Use parking lot at Sycamore Canyon Campground and start off along the main Sycamore Canyon and turn up to the fire road where we will climb up to the picnic table. If you want to turn left at the picnic table and go up to where the Ray Miller trail meets the fire road you can do that and then turn around. We will follow the fire road down to the parking lot. \nDirections: \nWe will be meeting at the Sycamore Canyon Campground and day use parking area on Pacific Coast hwy. This trailhead and parking area is a few miles south from the La Jolla Canyon Parking area where we go to hike the Ray Miller Trail. \nParking is available in the campground for $12 (or free with a State Parking Permit\, the 2022 Parking Permit is still good through 2023). SUMMARY:Chivo Canyon - Intermediate
DESCRIPTION:4.25 miles\, 1200′ gain\, intermediate \nWe start with a 1/4 mile walk from where we park along Cottonwood Dr\, to the trail head. There we make a left and take a relatively flat section and hike for about 3/4 mile. We’ll come to the same tar pits as the Tapo Canyon tar pit hike\, and then continue for another 300 feet to a fire road. \nWe’ll turn right and work our way up the fire road for about 1/2 mile\, and make a right at the split. Then it’s a steady climb for a mile to a flat spot on the top of the hill. We’ll have a social event there 30-60 minutes. Please bring food and drink to share. \nWe’ll continue straight and down for 1/4 mile\, and turn left at the junction. DESCRIPTION:This hike will be about 5.4 miles total with 820 ft. of elevation gain. \nWe are starting at the parking lot at the Wahoo’s parking lot. We will take Live Oak Trail. This turns into Serrano Road which will take us to Serrano Cow Trail. At this part of the trail\, we usually see a ton of deer\, so cross your fingers! We will get on Sleepy Hollow Trail. This will take us up to Santiago Ranch Road to Cactus Hill. We will take a short break at Four Corners. Then we will come down Whiting Road. We then proceed easterly roughly 4 miles and up 1250 feet\, gradually winding our way up and through Latigo Canyon\, crossing Latigo Canyon Road\, and then ending at a saddle or on a bluff immediately south of Castro Peak with spectacular Pacific views. \nhttp://photos1.meetupstatic.com/photos/event/3/8/0/6/event_101654342.jpeg \nThe terrain is a mix of single and double-file trail. The majority of our out and back hike is wooded and shaded canyon trails\, offering periodic glimpses of the Pacific\, but the route eventually gives way to open hillsides and ridgelines\, and an open area over the Pacific. \nThe total distance for this hike will be approximately 7 miles with 1550 feet of elevation gain. \nNo dogs allowed on the hike. \nDirections: \nFrom the 101 – exit at the Kanan Road exit and drive south (toward the ocean) 7.8 miles\, going through two of the three tunnels on this road (which changes name to Kanan Dume Road). SUMMARY:Hunt for California Poppies and Trail Exploration ~ Gentler Friendly
DESCRIPTION:A few years ago\, Weekday Trailblazer members helped build a trail that extends north from the Westlake Village YMCA up into the hills west of Lindero Canyon Road. We will hike both the Bowfield Trail and Wishbone Trail on this outing. \nThis route is about 5 miles with an elevation gain of about 1050’. \nI pre-hiked the route on Saturday and the poppies were abundant. There are a couple of short sections of the trail that are a bit overgrown so you might think about wearing long pants if you are sensitive to overgrowth. \nDIRECTIONS: Find the trailhead by exiting 101 at Lindero Canyon\, and go north to Thousand Oaks Boulevard. Turn left\, and immediately turn slightly right\, and uphill\, to the new park high above the Boulevard. At the top\, turn left\, and drive to the far left (west) end of the ball fields. \nThere are restrooms and water fountains near the trailhead and the ball fields. SUMMARY:Rosewood Trail to Angel Vista ~ Gentler hike
DESCRIPTION:This is a second hike for Thursday since the only hike posted is full. We will start near the beginning of Regal Oak Ct. on the lower Rosewood Trail\, a dirt trail heading up a shaded ravine at the base of the mountain and continue to the usual Rosewood trail. We will hike to the top of Rosewood trail where there is a picnic table. Since this is an out and back\, you can take your time or speed it up. SUMMARY:Chumash - Intermediate\, with Easy option
DESCRIPTION:4 miles\, 1100′ gain\, Intermediate\nEasy Option: 1.5 miles\, 400′ gain\, Fit Beginner \nThe entire hike outbound is a steady incline. Nothing super steep\, just continuous and quite strenuous for many. There are virtually no junctions where one can get lost. \nThis is one of the more famous hikes in Simi Valley\, and for good reason. Much of the hike takes place along the edge of the mountain. The trail in spots is a bit rugged and rocky\, so a good tread on your shoes is recommended. \nIt is a part of the Chumash Natural Park that includes sandstone rock formations\, caves\, and beautiful vistas of Simi Valley. The land is owned by the Santa Monica Mountains Conservancy and the Rancho Simi Recreation & Park District. It is maintained by the Rancho Simi Trailblazers and patrolled by the Volunteer Trail Safety Service. \nWe’ll all begin the climb together. Those doing the easier option will stop after 0.7 miles and wait for about 45 minutes until the rest of us return to this spot for our social event. While waiting\, they can continue to climb any portion they want and return to this spot\, or just take in the views. \nThe rest will continue for 1.3 miles until a flat rock before heading back the same way to the social event spot. A few will probably continue another 1/2 mile until the end of the trail. \nAt the social event spot\, we’ll be rewarded with sweeping views of Simi Valley and will share snacks and beverages. \nThere is really no way to get lost on this hike\, so everybody will move along at whatever pace they want. \nHike (click this link for a pic)\nDistance: 4.0 miles or 1.5 miles\nGain: 1100′ or 400′\nDistribution: Most of the incline is concentrated in the first half.\nDifficulty: Intermediate or Fit Beginer\nShape: Out and back.\nPace: approx. 2.0 mph.\nTrail Type: Fire road\, double track\, single track.\nTrail Variations: The entire first half is incline. This is from the daisy family\, and it is typically used as an ornamental plant. \nMediterranean Mustard / Black Mustard\nMediterranean mustard seeds are yellow or white\, while Black mustard seeds are brown or black. The flowers look the same. \nFlowers\, leaves (mustard greens)\, and roots are edible. Can be used as a spice. Grind seeds and mix with water and vinegar to make prepared mustard. This is often a very abundant noxious weed (has been designated by an agricultural authority as one that is injurious to agricultural or horticultural crops\, natural habitats or ecosystems\, or humans or livestock.). Mugu State Park (Sycamore Canyon) have a lot of ruts to fill and brush to cut back. \nHow does free camping at the Danielson Ranch in Point Mugu State Park\, a barbecue dinner\, coffee & bagels in the mornings and the chance to win one of a few dozen thank-you drawing prizes – in exchange for some much needed work on our trails sound? \nYou can come and help for the weekend or for a day! For the 40th year\, trail users are gathering in April to work on the trails we love. In partnership with State Parks and the National Park Service\, we have trail crew leaders from the Santa Monica Mountains Trails Council\, the Sierra Club Task Force and Concerned Off-Road Bicyclist Association to teach you the basics of trail work and then guide you as we work on several different trails in the park. Choices for the level of work you want to do range from easy to very difficult. We welcome all ages and this is a great opportunity for families and outdoor groups. DESCRIPTION:THIS IS A CHC STEWARDSHIP/VOLUNTEER EVENT\, IT IS NOT A HIKE *\n\nSaturday April 22\, 2023 – CONDOR CLEAN UP in the St. Francis Dam area\, near Santa Clarita \nDescription:\nJoin us at the bottom K-Rails near the dam site for Earth Day!\nWe need your help to pick up broken shards of glass in the lower section of the St. Francis Dam National Monument. There are 400 flights of condors over this area every day. They love the shiny glass…they eat it and the feed glass to their chicks. Both can die from ingesting the glass. Needless to say\, as this stuff is not digestible\, this can kill them. \nIt is Easy work….bring a heavy plastic bag (like a grocery bag) to put the glass in. Wear garden gloves. Bring a low to the ground chair to sit in while you pick up the glass. Thank you for helping the condors survive. \nDianne will take away your bags of broken glass to recyle them. \nMeeting Spot/ Time: (34.535297\, -118.52569 GPS – put this into Google maps)\nOn San Francisquito Cyn Road\, at the lower Parking area\, near Power House # 2. Park by the K-Rails\, just before the stop sign on the bridge.\nWe will start at 9:00AM and plan to finish by 12:00AM.\nDianne will ensure everyone maintains appropriate social distancing. Bring a mask if you are uncomfortable being outside near others. \nDirections from Santa Clarita Valley to Meeting spot: \nDrive 6.0 miles North up San Fracisquito Canyon Road. Pass Powerhouse 2\, and there will be a turnout with K-Rails on your right side. Look for Mary and Dianne who will already be there. Park. DO NOT PASS THE STOP SIGN. OUR MEETING SPOT IS JUST BEFORE THE STOP SIGN. \nBring:\nYour own water (2L) \, snacks\, hand wipes\, electrolytes\, sunhat\, sunscreen. Bring a low chair such as a beach chair to use while you work.
