SUMMARY:Las Virgenes Trail to Cheseboro Ridge ~ 8 mile loop
DESCRIPTION:Enjoy the camaraderie of fellow Hikers and get a great workout close to home. You’re done before noon! \nDistance: Approximately 8 miles \nElevation Gain: Approximately 1\,500 ft \nThis hike is rated moderate for its elevation gain and distance. \nDrink plenty of water prior to and during the hike. \nFollow the directions to the trailhead as indicated below. \nFrom the Las Virgenes Trail connect with the beautiful Cheseboro Canyon Ridge and hike to the north. We’ll then turn to the east on a connector trail to return to the cars via the Upper Cheseboro Canyon Trail. (about 8 miles) \nNote that we are starting at the Las Virgenes Trailhead on Las Virgenes Road. \n \nIf you want to bring your dog\, it’s fine as long as the pooch is leashed. \nMap:http://www.nps.gov/samo/planyourvisit/upload/Cheeseboro07.pdf \nDirections: To get to trailhead take 101 and exit Las Virgenes Rd. Turn north (away from beach) to end of road. If you are coming up from PCH\, drive up Malibu Canyon to the end (Malibu Cyn changes its name to Las Virgenes Rd). The trailhead is marked clearly. Park on the street. If you can’t park near the trailhead\, just look for space down the street. We’ll wait until you walk to the trailhead. \nParking is free. \n______________________________________________________________________ \nI am a volunteer (i.e. not liable for the group). Safety is a priority for everyone in the group. Think of this as hiking with a group of friends. \nDISCLAIMER / RELEASE OF LIABILITY IMPORTANT\, PLEASE READ BELOW IN ITS ENTIRETY: Outdoor sports and other events we plan are inherently dangerous and accidents may happen. By participating in any posted event\, you’re taking responsibility for your own safety and well-being. The Thousand Oaks Hikers Group and it’s organizers are not trained leaders and we do not confirm the qualifications of any of its members to lead or participate in trips. You should be self-sufficient and be able to find your way to safety in the event you find yourself on your own. I will not lead you back to the trailhead if you decide to turn back. \nDisclaimer: The organizer\, assistant organizers\, and event hosts take no responsibility and will not be held responsible for any injuries or accidents that may occur during this hiking event. SUMMARY:Remembering Friends\, Hike and Brunch
DESCRIPTION:We thought it would be nice to get together for an early morning hike with brunch after to remember our beloved friends we lost 6 years ago. \nOption 1 6am: Hike the 9 miles Los Pinetos loop \nOption 2 8am: 3.5 miles Canyon Trail to Walker Ranch \nOption 3 ~ 10am: brunch – no potluck – bring your own food \nLength: 9 or 3.5 mile options \nElevation Gain: 2000 ft/250ft \nRating: 7/10 or 2/10 \nTrail: single track\, fire road\, fire break \nThe Plan: \nThe first two miles takes you from the Placerita Nature Center parking lot to the Los Pinetos Trailhead via the Canyon trail with only a 250 foot elevation gain. Mile 3 of our trek is the HARDEST with an elevation gain of 700 feet. The 4th mile takes us just about to the top\, but only has an elevation gain of a bit more than 400 feet. Mile 4 is my favorite part because it’s somewhat forest like with most of the trail covered by trees with the only drawback being there can be an abundance of gnats in this area for some reason. After a brief sidetrip to catch a view of the valley and a bit more uphill at the top we will take a brief break at the Wilson Canyon Saddle where there is a bathroom. Next we will take the Firebreak Ridge Trail and finally the Manzanita Mountain Trail back to the Nature Center. The Firebreak Ridge Trail was\, as the name implies\, a fire break and has some very steep areas. \nMeet at the picnic tables across the bridge \nDirections \nExit the 14 Fwy at Placerita Canyon Rd and go South to the park entrance on the right. Parking is free and the map above is accurate. \n************************** \nPLEASE – Know your limits and abilities. Bring snacks and drink plenty of liquids when hiking. Check weather conditions and dress accordingly and be aware of your surroundings at all times. Watching out for poison oak\, snakes\, ticks\, uneven footing\, spectacular views\, beautiful fauna all while interacting with awesome (usually) fellow hikers can be extremely hazardous\, rewarding and fun. \nThe Farzan Rule: Posted hike times are the time the hike starts or we leave from a posted shuttle location. I’m aware other Meetup groups offer a grace period for late arrivals; we don’t. It’s your responsibility to know the location of the meeting spot and be there and ready to participate at the posted time. If you have any concerns about the directions feel free to contact the organizer of the event\, preferably in advance of the event and not at the start time. I’m of the opinion that it’s not fair to delay an event when the majority of attendees have arrived on-time. (so named after a conversation I had with a certain un-named member) \nRSVP’s: If you RSVP for an event be responsible and update your RSVP if your plans change. If your plans change at the last second and you’re not able to update your RSVP also let us know. In my opinion a no-show is someone who has no regard for following the guidelines we request from our members and will risk being removed from future events that have a limit. \nVHC HIKE RATING SCALE \nRating a hike is subjective\, meaning the difficulty of a hike will be in direct relation to how often you hike and the type of hike you prefer. Keep in mind that any hike can have the following: un-even hiking surfaces\, various obstructions\, water and/or water crossings or bouldering and/or rock hopping. A great hike will have all of these! \n1 – A long walk \n2 – 4 mile hike w/little elevation gain \n3 – 5 mile hike w/up to 1000 ft. elevation gain \n4 – 5+ mile hike w/up to 1500 ft. elevation gain (heart rate increases at times) \n5 – 7+ mile hike w/over 1500 ft. elevation gain (heart rate increasing even more at times) \n6 – 7+ mile hike w/over 2000 ft. elevation gain (at times you might be trying to remember how to perform CPR) \n7 – 5+ mile hike w/over 2000 ft. elevation gain (at times you might be muttering expletives to yourself) \n8 – 10+ mile hike w/over 3500 ft. elevation gain (at times you might be angry with the hike leader) \n9 – 10+ mile hike w/over 5000 ft. elevation gain (at times you might be thinking of reporting the hike leader to the authorities) \n10 – Use your imagination \nClass 3 Scrambling: Scrambling or un-roped climbing. You must use your hands at times to hold the terrain or find your route. This may be caused by a combination of boulders\, steepness and extreme terrain. Some Class 3 routes have ropes in place for assistance. \nDISCLAIMER / RELEASE OF LIABILITY \nIMPORTANT\, PLEASE READ BELOW IN ITS ENTIRETY: \nI am a volunteer (i.e. not liable for the group). Safety is a priority for everyone in the group. Think of this as hiking with a group of friends. \nOutdoor sports and other events we plan can be inherently dangerous and accidents may happen. SUMMARY:Revised Placerita Hike and Picnic Remembering Keyhole 7
DESCRIPTION:We thought it would be nice to get together for a morning hike with brunch after to remember our beloved friends we lost 6 years ago. Los Pinetos is closed but we can still take the Canyon Trail to Walker Ranch and come back to brunch. If you can’t make the Saturday hike\, hopefully we’ll see you for this one. \nOPTION 1 9am: 3.5 miles Canyon Trail to Walker Ranch \nWe will pass many native plants\, some of which I can now identify and share\, thanks to Helen on our last trip in the area. \nOPTION 2 ~ 10:30am: brunch – no potluck – bring your own food \nPlacerita Web Site (http://www.placerita.org/index.html) \nDirections \nExit the 14 Fwy at Placerita Canyon Rd and go South to the park entrance on the right. Parking is free and the map above is accurate. \n9 am Option 1: \nSTATS \nLength: 3.5 miles \nElevation Gain: 300 ft. \nRating: 2/10 \nTrail: single track\, Creek bed. \nDuration: 2 hours \nWrite up is Don’s: \nTHE PLAN \nThe hike takes you from the Placerita Nature Center parking lot to Walker Ranch via the Canyon trail with only 250 foot elevation gain. \nOutside the Nature Center in Placerita Canyon you will spot a large sign labeled “Main Trailhead\,” pointing you in the direction of a half dozen park trails. Walk past the sign and across Placerita Creek to the start of Canyon Trail on the south bank. Turn left and begin hiking up this level path alongside the creek. \nThe trail primarily sticks with the south side of the creek\, following the canyon east up a gradual grade to Walker Ranch. If you are in the mood to linger beneath the sycamores\, there are three benches along Canyon Trail where you can stop and relax. There are also posts every half-mile to let you know where you stand between Walker Ranch and the Nature Center. \nThree-quarters of a mile from the start\, you will pass through a dramatic kink in the canyon where the canyon walls become steep and pinch together. The canyon widens again as you continue up the trail. \nJust after the 1.5-mile marker\, you will pass a small pool on the right side of the trail. This is a miniature oil seep where “white oil” naturally bubbles to the surface. \nCanyon Trail slips through a grove of live oaks to arrive at Walker Ranch\, which has been converted into a group campground. Passing picnic tables and fire rings\, you will spot an impressive stone fireplace left over from one of the cottages built by Frank Walker and his family on this site a century ago. THIS IS OUR DESTINATION! \nAfter a quick snack break and regrouping\, we will return the same way we came. \n \n10:30 am Option 2: \nMeet at the picnic tables across the bridge. Bring your own food and drinks. \nPlacerita Canyon Nature Center is open to the public. It has beautiful shady trees with tables below to picnic on. From placerita.org: \nPlacerita is an east-west running canyon featuring cool\, shaded oak groves\, a willow and sycamore-lined seasonal stream and numerous other interesting plant and animal communities. \nThe historic “Oak of the Golden Dream” is the site of California’s original gold discovery in 1842. \nNEW! Click here for an in-depth look at the Oak of the Golden Dream story (video.) \nAnother landmark is the Walker Cabin \, built by Frank Walker in 1920 for his family. \nA network of self-guiding nature\, history and hiking trails radiates out into the park from the Center\, with longer hikes leading to a seasonal waterfall and to the top of the Santa Clarita Divide. Picnicking is available near the Nature Center. \nThe park encompasses oak woodland\, chaparral\, and riparian plant communties on the north side of the San Gabriel Mountains southeast of the City of Santa Clarita. The park not only serves to conserve a slice of the wild environment but also endeavors to educate the public on the value of undisturbed flora and fauna through wild animal presentations\, nature hikes\, and self-guided educational trails. \nPlease feel free to contact the Nature Center at (661) 259-7721 if you have any questions. http://www.placerita.org/ \n************************** \nPLEASE – Know your limits and abilities. Bring snacks and drink plenty of liquids when hiking. Check weather conditions and dress accordingly and be aware of your surroundings at all times. SUMMARY:Angel Vista Full Moon potluck hike
DESCRIPTION:3.0 miles\, 800′ gain\, easy-intermediate. \nThis hike is rated easy-intermediate because it is a continuous incline for 1.5 miles. This isn’t real steep\, but it is continuous\, and many beginner hikers have indicated this should be rated intermediate (https://www.meetup.com/Hiking-Plus/messages/boards/thread/50879781). \n \nThat said\, there is no reason a fit beginner cannot complete this hike. If needed\, just stop and rest along the way\, even if it’s every 50 steps. This is not a conditioning hike\, it is a social hike\, and you really can’t get lost. \nThe only junction is 200 yards before the top\, where we’ll turn right to complete the climb. \nAt the top\, there is a picnic table and 360 degree incredible views that are especially wonderful at night. We’ll have our typical snack-share (https://www.meetup.com/Hiking-Plus/messages/boards/thread/50879772) social event at the top for 30-60 minutes before heading back the way we came. Please bring some food and drink to share. \nThe top has been known to sometimes be very cool and windy. Please bring something to put on in case it is that way at the top. \n \nYou will see several plants of note: \nTree Tobacco \nThe Cahuilla Indians used the leaves interchangeably with other tobacco species in hunting rituals and as a poultice to treat swellings\, bruises\, cuts\, wounds\, boils\, sores\, inflamed throat\, and swollen glands. It does not contain nicotine. \nIt contains anabasine\, a similar compound\, which is highly toxic to humans and animals. It is more toxic than nicotine. Ingestion of the leaves can be fatal. It is being investigated for use as a biofuel. All parts of this plant are toxic. Used as an insecticide. Do not smoke. \n \nElderberry \nThe blue or purple berries are gathered and made into elderberry wine\, jam\, syrup\, and pies. The entire flower cluster can be dipped in batter and fried while petals can be eaten raw or made into a fragrant and tasty tea. Spit out the seeds. Elderflower water is also used in perfumes and sweets. \nMost agree that they do need to be cooked if you are going to eat more than just a few out of hand. That’s because they have a small amount of cyanide producing glycosides\, which are released upon digestion. Fully ripe black berries are not toxic and you can eat as many as you like. Boiling or baking takes care of any “toxic” issue as does drying raw berries. \n \nDirections: \nFrom the 101 take the Ventu Park exit (3 miles north/west of the 23) and go South toward the ocean. At Lynn Road turn right. VERY soon you will pass an open space on your left. Watch for the entrance to Regal Oak Ct on your left\, where you will turn left. Take it all the way to the end and park. This is a neighborhood\, so please keep the noise down. \nWe will meet not quite at the end of the road. We’ll cross a gate along the side of the street and across from the houses\, then move 100 yards to the right and enter the trail. \nHike Distance: 3.0 milesGain: 800′Distribution: Most of the incline occurs in the first half\, which is a continuous climb.Difficulty (https://www.meetup.com/Hiking-Plus/messages/boards/thread/50879781): Easy Intermediate.Shape: Out and back.Pace: approx. 2.0 mph.Trail Type: Double track\, single track.Duration: 4 hoursDogs: Yes.Restrooms: NoDrinking Fountains: No.Parking: Free along the street. \nWhat to bring:1 liter of water for every 3 miles.Hiking shoes/boots. Not required\, but recommended.Flashlight or headlamp.Sunscreen and/or hat as needed.Snacks and/or beverages to share (https://www.meetup.com/Hiking-Plus/messages/boards/thread/50879772). \nRelease of Liability: https://www.meetup.com/Hiking-Plus/pages/29622459/Is_Hiking_Dangerous/

SUMMARY:Lizard Rock Loop
DESCRIPTION:Easy Intermediate\, 4.5 miles\, 900′ gain. \nThis is a unique loop through Wildwood Park that takes us to the famous Lizard Rock. \nThere are several extended inclines and a few short but steep climbs that cause this to be rated on the easy end of the intermediate spectrum. Beginners will still have no problem completing this hike\, but they may be cursing some of the inclines and will not be zooming along on the steps or inclines at high speed. \nThere is nothing wrong with taking it slow because this is a social hike\, not a conditioning hike. We’ll be waiting for folks to catch up at the major junctions\, and I’ll be putting down white arrows so that nobody gets lost if they fall way behind. \nWe’ll be starting from the tennis court parking lot 4 blocks east of the trail head parking lot and across the road. \nWe’ll cross to the park side of the road and turn right (west) for 1 block\, where we’ll see an entrance to the Moonridge trail that runs parallel to the road. We’ll enter and make a right\, following it around past the first set of junctions\, continuing for about 1/4 mile\, and then follow it around to the left instead of taking the stem to the right. \nThis will take has past the steps to the trail head parking lot and continue along the Moonridge trail. We’ll follow it around for another 1/2 mile and make a right at the North Teepee Trail fire road and continue for about 200′. \nNext\, we’ll make a left at the Stagecoach Bluff Trail for about 500′\, where it will dead end at a trail of the same name. We’ll make a left and continue for about 1000′ until it dead ends. We make a left\, then the next right to head up to Lizard Rock\, where we’ll share snacks and beverages (https://www.meetup.com/Hiking-Plus/messages/boards/thread/50879772). \nFinally\, we’ll head back down from the rock\, make a left\, and continue for about 1500′ where it will dead end at the Mesa Trail. We’ll turn right and take this fire road all the way back to the main Wildwood parking lot\, then turn right and follow the road for about 1500′ back to our cars. \nReturning EarlyFor those that wish to head back instead of hanging around for the snack share\, you are responsible for finding your own way back. Please follow the posted route and map. \nInteresting Notes: \nYou will see several entities of note: \nSugar Bush \nLooks almost like Laurel Sumac. Pointy leaves\, which is one way to tell it apart from the Lemondade berry. Has fuzzy red berries in long clumps that can be used to make a lemonade like drink. Sap from the fruit can be used as a sweetener. Leaves are edible. Can only be found in the California hills. \nLemonade Berry \nSome saps can produce skin allergic reactions. Good kindling. Usually\, the berries are toxic. They are covered with a gooey sour (like lemon) coating. Hikers sometimes drop a seed or two into their water bottles to give the water a tang. Wide leaves\, rounded tips\, edges are smooth\, dull on back. Can only be found in the California hills. \nDirections: \nWildwood Park635 W Avenida De Los ArbolesThousand Oaks\, CA 91360 \nFrom the 118: \nCA-118 west to CA-23.Continue south on CA-23 to exit 15 for 4.8 miles\, Avenida de los ArbolesTurn right (east) on Avenida de los Arboles for 3.3 miles until 4 blocks before it ends. SUMMARY:Oakbrook Vista - Easy Intermediate
DESCRIPTION:3.2 miles\, 900′ gain\, easy intermediate. \nThe first part is a steady incline\, followed by a rolling trail to our destination. Fit beginners can complete this hike\, but it will certainly get their blood pumping. There are no super steep sections. \nThis hike takes us to a secret spot below a large rock formation. Naturally into the side of the rock is a half-globe carved out of it\, giving us a quasi-cave area to sit and have our social event. \nThis is not a conditioning hike\, it’s a social hike. We’ll be stopping at various points to let people catch up and to make sure they make any turns. We’ll stop at the turn around point for a social event lasting 30 – 60 minutes\, where we will share snacks and beverages (https://www.meetup.com/Hiking-Plus/messages/boards/thread/50879772). \nThe Route (photo posted): \nHikeDistance: 3.2 milesGain: 900′Distribution: Most of the incline is in the first half.Difficulty (https://www.meetup.com/Hiking-Plus/messages/boards/thread/50879781): Easy Intermediate.Shape: Out and Back.Pace: approx. 2.0 mph.Trail Type: Double track\, single track.Trail Variations:Duration: 3.5 hoursDogs: Yes.Restrooms: Yes\, about a block from the start.Drinking Fountains: Maybe by the restrooms.Parking: Park in the street. \nHosting \nRoute: The host knows the route. A pic of the route has been posted. \nNavigation: Host memory\, enhanced by GPS navigation as needed. \nHike type: Social. We won’t be hiking at a fast pace because this is a social hike\, not a conditioning hike. There is nothing wrong with stopping\, even if it means every 50 steps. See “How hard is this hike” in the discussion section (LINK (https://www.meetup.com/Hiking-Plus/messages/boards/thread/50879781)). \nStops: The host may designate stopping points to let others catch up. This hike will include an extended stop for a snack and beverage (https://www.meetup.com/Hiking-Plus/messages/boards/thread/50879772) share at the half way point. We will stop at junctions to make sure everybody makes any turns or chooses the correct direction at splits\, else something will be used to mark the direction\, usually a large arrow made of baking soda or some sticks in the shape of an arrow. There may not always be a sweeper designated to be the last hiker. \nEach hiker is responsible for knowing their capability\, only attending events where they are able to sustain the described pace\, for keeping up with the group sufficiently enough to make the turns and not get left behind\, and for making sure the host is notified if they are going to split from the group. \nGroup separation: Sometimes hikers wish to move significantly ahead and not wait at designated stopping points. Please let the host know. They are on their own regarding route and navigation. \nInteresting Notes \nHere are a couple plants you are sure to see on this hike: \nManzanita \nRounded leaves. Redish trunk and stems. Hard wood. Lots of curves. People used to spray this tree with lacquer and mount on their walls like a “tree of life” for decoration. \nSticky Monkeyflower \nOf the Snapdragon family. The flowers are supposed to resemble a laughing monkey’s face. Leaves are very sticky on the underside. \nDirections: \nOakbrook Vista Trailhead3222 Lang Ranch Pkwy.Thousand Oaks\, CA 91362Coordinates of trailhead: 34.212466\, -118.820325 \nFrom CA-23:Exit 15 Avenida de Los Arboles.East on Avenida de Los Arboles until it ends\, 1.6 miles.Right (south) on N. SUMMARY:National Public Lands Day @ Rancho Sierra Vista
DESCRIPTION:I’ll lead in with saying that this event is not an official Calabasas Day Hikers event\, and I’m not the official host. \nWith Saturday being National Public Lands Day\, I thought I’d take some hike time and spend it giving back to one of the areas our group uses most. It’s sponsored by one of our benefactors\, the Santa Monica Mountains Fund. It’s local; the Rancho Sierra Vista is in Newbury Park. I’ve volunteered there a few times. The staff is great at explaining what the goal is that day and how to achieve it. A great experience\, and it affords an understanding of the hard work needed to keep our natural areas well\, natural. It also leaves you with a sense of accomplishment\, and the staff will always appreciate your support. \nPlease follow this Eventbrite link: \nhttps://www.eventbrite.com/e/national-public-lands-day-rancho-sierra-vista-tickets-168650432985?utm_source=eventbrite&utm_medium=email&utm_campaign=reminder_attendees_48hour_email&utm_term=eventname&ref=eemaileventremind \nThere will be snacks (granola bars\, etc.) and drinks. I recommend you bring your own so you know you have something you’ll eat. \nI’ll also note that the event has it’s own COVID practices\, so please follow those when you go. Whatever other rules\, if you’re showing signs of COVID\, please stay home and take care of yourself. \nWeather: Mid-60s at start; mid-70s at end (as of Thursday at 8 PM). UV Index is 7\, so bring sunscreen.Parking: FreeDogs: Not on this oneWater: They provide\, but you might bring some. I carry a couple of liters in a pack so it’s always plentiful and nearby. It’s warm when you’re working under the sun.Known hazards: Snakes\, trip/fall (wear hiking boots to keep feet protected). Depending on where we work\, maybe poison oak. \nDirections (see map below and at the link above):From Camarillo/Oxnard/Ventura:US-101 South to Wendy Dr. Turn left onto Wendy Dr. Turn right onto Borchard Rd. SUMMARY:Tongva - The 4072nd highest peak in California.
DESCRIPTION:The Stats \nDistance 6.5 milesRating 6-7/10\, not for beginnersElevation gain: 2000 ft.Trail: Fire Roads and Trails w/ some steep uphills \nThe PlanDon’s writeup \nWarning: This route starts uphill 1950 feet in less than 2 miles so don’t say I didn’t warn you!! Depending on your abilities gloves could come in handy and you could be doing some portions on all fours. \nWe’ll start by the Brand Park Library\, after a brief portion of the Brand Park Mtrwy we’ll be taking a direct and steep route up to Tongva Peak. At the top we’ll enjoy the views returning via Brand Canyon on the Brand Canyon Mtrwy. \nThe Story \nAccording to peakery.com data\, Tongva Peak ranks as the 4072nd highest mountain in California and the 37798th highest mountain in the United States. \nThe Tongva lived in villages on vast tribal lands that stretched from Orange County to Ventura County and from Riverside County to the Pacific Ocean\, including the Channel Islands. The skilled seafarers and hunters were knowledgeable and astute stewards of their land and its resources\, according to the Gabrielino/Tongva Tribal Council based in San Gabriel. \nTheir culture began to crumble in the late 1700s when the Spaniards forced them to build the missions and farm the surrounding land for the mission padres. The priests established the road from Mission San Gabriel to the San Fernando Mission along a path the Tongva had used for thousands of years. Portions still exist as La Crescenta Avenue in La Crescenta\, Honolulu Avenue in Montrose and La Tuna Canyon Road in Tujunga. \nThe mission road crossed an arroyo near what is now Orange Grove Boulevard and Colorado Avenue and continued north along the Verdugo Mountains. \nThe Verdugo range stretches about 10 miles across the eastern San Fernando Valley from La Tuna Canyon to Glendale. Its trails are a magnet for mountain bikers and hikers\, who say that although the mountains are surrounded by a population of millions\, recreation seekers can often ride or hike for hours without seeing anyone. \nHome to mountain lions\, deer and bobcats\, the Verdugos remain largely unspoiled by development\, much as they were when the Tongva built encampments in the foothills. \nWhen the mission system collapsed in the 1840s\, the Tongva culture and language all but disappeared. During the last three decades\, however\, Tongva descendants have been working to gain federal recognition as members of a Native American tribe\, which would make them eligible for health benefits\, housing assistance\, scholarships and gaming rights. \nAbout 350 Tongva descendants live in the Los Angeles basin today\, according to the tribal council’s cultural affairs officer. \nUnofficially\, the peak has had several monikers over the years–Star Peak\, Flat Top and Mount Tom among them. \nDirections \nExit on Western Ave. from the 5 freeway and go North toward the mountains. At the end of Western you’ll see the entrance to Brand Park across the street and a few feet to your right. Enter here and go past the ballfields to the parking lots by the library. Parking is free. \n******************************************************************* \nPLEASE – Know your limits and abilities. \n1 – A long walk \n2 – 4 mile hike w/little elevation gain \n3 – 5 mile hike w/up to1000 ft. elevation gain \n4 – 5+ mile hike w/up to1500 ft. elevation gain (heart rate increases at times) \n5 – 7+ mile hike w/over 1500 ft. elevation gain (heart rate increasing even more at times) \n6 – 7+ mile hike w/over 2000 ft. elevation gain (at times you might be trying to remember how to perform CPR) \n7 – 5+ mile hike w/over 2000 ft. elevation gain (at times you might be muttering expletives to yourself) \n8 – 10+ mile hike w/over 3500 ft. elevation gain (at times you might be angry with the hike leader) \n9 – 10+ mile hike w/over 5000 ft. elevation gain (at times you might be thinking of reporting the hike leader to the authorities) \n10 – Use your imagination \nClass 3 Scrambling: Scrambling or un-roped climbing. By participating in any posted event\, you’re taking responsibility for your own safety and well-being. The Valencia Hiking Crew Meetup Group and its organizers are not trained leaders and we do not confirm the qualifications of any of its members to lead or participate in trips. SUMMARY:Mt. Baldy via the Ski-Hut Trail Return via the Notch
DESCRIPTION:Sorry for the short notice but the forecast for thunderstorms has waffled back and forth. It finally looks like Sunday will be a day with zero T’storm chances. \nHike to the summit via the Ski Hut trail and descend via the Backbone trail to the Notch and then via the service road back down to Manker Flats or take the lift\, your coice \nBring snacks for the summit and trail. \nAdvanced Intermediate Hikers. You should have Mt. Baldy Summit experience via the Backbone Trail beforehand. \n \nStats: \nDistance: 11 miles \nElevation Gain: ~4\,000 ft. \nMax elevation : 10\,064 ft. \nRating: 7/10 Strenuous \nTrail: Looped some pavement\, fire roads\, but mostly single track and rocky trails \nESSENTIALS: \n2 Liters of water (Minimum) \nSunscreen \nHat \nSnacks \nHiking Poles (Recommended) \nLayered clothing (can be windy & chilly at the summit) \nCheck the Weather (http://www.wunderground.com/cgi-bin/findweather/hdfForecast?query=91759&searchType=WEATHER) \nNOTE: \nThis is considered a high altitude hike and high altitude sickness\, AKA acute mountain sickness\, is a possibility. Good Physical health is important. The San Antonio Ski Hut/Baldy Bowl Trail is considered the most direct route to the summit of Mount Baldy (10\,064′). This climb is considered strenuous. \nAs you approach the Manker Flat parking area you will be on a 4 lane road with a wide center divider. Parking is on both sides and in the divider. After you pass the Manker Flats campground on the right\, look for Angeles Falls Road. There is access through the divider at this point\, so you can turn left and park hopefully closer to the trail head. There is a gate across Angeles Falls road and porta potties. This is the trail head. The road up to Baldy is VERY curvy with VERY tight turns. Anybody who does not like twisty roads with dropoffs should be a passenger! \nPLEASE – Know your limits and abilities. Bring and drink plenty of liquids when hiking. Check weather conditions and dress accordingly and be aware of your surroundings at all times. SUMMARY:Baron Ranch Trails on Gaviota Coast - Post-hike Coastal Picnic
DESCRIPTION:Have you ever heard of the Baron Ranch hiking trails? Most folks haven’t\, but it’s a splendid — and sometimes shady — trail a couple miles west of Refugio State Beach and it’s worth the trip. \nAnd if that’s not enough\, we’ll have a picnic at Refugio SB after the hike where Ann and I have reserved two campsites. \nThe hike is about a 6.9 mile lollipop with 1\,300′ total ascent and is rated MEDIUM. See the hike rating guide at https://www.hikingwithdean.com/hike-rating-guide/ \nOur hike begins in the canyon that forms the Arroyo Quemado Creek watershed. The trail follows a network of ranch roads leading through a habitat restoration area and into the backcountry. \nThe first mile of the trail is relatively flat and follows the bottom of the canyon. Just beyond the one-mile mark the road transitions into the riparian zone and continues to parallel the creek\, it’s here that the trail starts to take on a more wilderness feel. \nAt 2.1 miles and 2.6 miles\, the trail splits to form a loop up into the mountains. The upper portion of the Loop Trail provides some exceptional vistas down the canyon and out towards the ocean with views of the island on a clear day. Views along the canyons open up to reveal the Pacific Ocean and the Channel Islands. At the top of the loop\, the single-track section of the Loop Trail trail connects again to a ranch road and then returns to the beginning of the loop and the main trail. \n[Note. The trail is currently closed until 9/17 due to the recent restrictions placed on California’s National Forests in order to prevent fire activity.] \nDIRECTIONS \n– Take Hwy 101 North\, 2.4 miles past Refugio Road and exit\n– Turn right at the road crossing onto Arroyo Quemada Ln. (Watch for the yellow sign indicating “cross-traffic ahead”).\n– Immediately turn left onto Calle Real and proceed approximately 3/4 mile until the road reaches a street sign that says “End”.\n– Use the circle to turn around and park along Calle Real.

SUMMARY:Rocky Peak - Intermediate
DESCRIPTION:5 miles\, 1200′ gain\, Intermediate \nThis hike is one of the most well known in Simi Valley. It contains beautiful sandstone formations throughout the hike and there are fantastic views of the valleys. There is really no way to get lost because there are no junctions. If one chooses\, they can turn around and return to the beginning at any point during this climb. \nThe beginning and end of this hike contain continuous and steep inclines (about 1000 steps each). Still\, it’s a fire road\, so it’s not steeper than a truck can climb. There is nothing wrong with taking short breaks during these climbs and doing it slowly. \nFit beginners can do it but will most likely find these sections tiring. The rest of the hike also contains several sections of continuous incline\, although not as steep. \nI personally have led beginners on this hike. Most completed the hike\, but not without some cursing and adding perhaps 30 minutes to the climb time. This is not a problem\, since it is neither a race nor conditioning hike\, but those that want to make a workout out of the hike are welcome to proceed ahead of the group at their own pace. \nWe’ll stop at the 1/3 point (0.8 miles)\, where the Hummingbird trail finishes into Rocky Peak. There is a bench there. We’ll let others catch up. \nThen we’ll continue for 1.5 miles to a couple large rocks at the top\, then past them to a flat cement platform. There\, we’ll share snacks and beverages (https://www.meetup.com/Hiking-Plus/messages/boards/thread/50879772)\, enjoy the views\, engage in a social interaction\, and rest before returning. The climb to the top usually takes about an hour. \nIt can get windy at the top and cool in the evening\, so I would recommend bringing something light to put on. \nInteresting Notes: \nHere are a couple plants you are sure to see on this hike: \nCalifornia Sagebrush \nAromatic when crushed. AKA\, common sage\, coastal sage. Sunflower family. Cowboys used to ride through it and brush up against the pine-shaped leaves\, coming home with the smell on their clothes and giving rise to the nickname “Cowboy Cologne.” Not a true sage. Can be used as a cooking spice and can be made into a tea. Tear off some needles by running your hand up the stalk and smell the aroma. \nPurple Sage \nGrey-green leaves. Aromatic when crushed. Purple flowers. Aka\, Tobacco Sage\, with mild hallucinogenic properties when smoked. Can be used as a spice or made into a tea. Tea has medicinal affects: Antiviral\, gargle for sore throats\, reduce hay fever symptoms and other drying actions. In the last summer\, fall\, and winter months\, the flowers will have turned brown and the leaves we take on a greyer color. \nDirections:Rocky Peak TrailSimi Valley\, CA 9306534.268396\, -118.636139 \nFrom the 118Exit Rocky Peak Rd.Trailhead on the north side.Park either at the trailhead (limited parking)\, or south of the freeway along Santa Susanna Pass Rd. \nFrom the 101 @ CA-23North CA-23 for 8.4 miles.East I-118 for 14 miles.Exit 32 Rocky Peak Rd.Trailhead on the north side (left).Park either at the trailhead (limited parking)\, or south (right) of the freeway along Santa Susanna Pass Rd. \nThe Hike:Distance: 5 miles\, 3.5 hoursElevation Gain: 1200′Difficulty: IntermediatePace: 2.0 mphDogs: Yes if leashed\, per State lawRestrooms: NoDrinking Fountains: NoParking: Free at the trailhead (limited parking\, not recommended as you can get a ticket after sunset for parking there) or across the freeway 500′.Trail: Fire road.Purpose: Social \nWhat to Bring:1-2 liters of water.Snacks and/or beverages to share (https://www.meetup.com/Hiking-Plus/messages/boards/thread/50879772).Hiking shoes preferred\, but athletic shoes will be OK.Flashlight or headlamp. \nDisclaimer / Release of Liability:https://www.meetup.com/Hiking-Plus/pages/29622459/Is_Hiking_Dangerous/

Well\, here’s another chance to enjoy this area below pinyon pine covered ridges as we use another easy canyon to access them. Of all the treks in the Razorbacks\, this was the most rewarding. This trek will be geared for intermediate hikers who love exploring. We’ll all be heading deep into a Razorback Bowl to enjoy what nature has carved out there. We’ll explore another canyon that we missed doing last time there. \nCheck out the photos posted on our last trip there:https://www.meetup.com/Westlake-Village-Hiking-Meetup-Group/photos/31183535/493787193/ \nMEETUP LOCATION AND TIME:The Flying J Travel Center in Lebec at 8:00 am:https://www.google.com/maps/place/34%C2%B049’00.4%22N+118%C2%B053’10.2%22W/@34.8167674\,-118.8883557\,918m/data=!3m2!1e3!4b1!4m17!1m10!4m9!1m3!2m2!1d-119.1365275!2d34.7489344!1m3!2m2!1d-119.1584843!2d34.7287962!3e0!3m5!1s0x0:0x0!7e2!8m2!3d34.8167631!4d-118.8861666From here we’ll all caravan to the canyon where we will start the hike. \nTERRAIN: No\, this isn’t Utah\, but it sure seems like it. SUMMARY:Hondo Canyon - Fossil Ridge - PacBell Tower
DESCRIPTION:Another spectacular section of the Backbone Trail this hike includes staggering views of pink colored sedimentary rock formations\, beautifully shaded live oak\, streams and a sloping green meadow. Its perhaps one of the shadiest sections of the Backbone Trail. At the top we will see many fossils in the sandstone. \nInstead of the usual destination – the graffiti covered Topanga Lookout – we will head over to the old PacBell towers. \nThis is a 9 mile hike with over 1500 ft elevation gain and is rated DIFFICULT due to terrain. See the Hike Rating guide https://www.hikingwithdean.com/hike-rating-guide/ \nHighlights include the sedimentary rock formations known as the Sespe Formation\, Hondo canyon’s pink “V” gourge\, Topanga Lookout and the Bragg home in the Bay Tree Woodland. (Paul C. Bragg was a pioneer in the health food movement in California. He had a chain of health food stores and popular radio shows in the 30?s and 40?s. He was the inspiration and teacher for later healthy living teachers like Jack LaLanne. His abandoned vacation cabin was here until the early 1990s\, but was burned in the 1993 fire). \nDIRECTIONS: \nMeet at backbone trailhead on south side of Old Topanga Road\, 1/4 mile west of Topanga Canyon. Park on south side of street \nClose-by parking is limited — be early!

SUMMARY:Long Canyon - Easy CC Loop - Suitable for Fit Beginners
DESCRIPTION:3 miles\, 650′ gain\, fit beginner. \nThere is one extended climb in the middle of the hike that is relatively mild (it is fire road) but continues for about a mile. Being a fire road\, steepness is limited to that which a vehicle can climb. \nStarting from the Long Canyon trailhead parking lot\, we head west on the Woodridge Connector along the sides of houses. Note that is not heading UP from the trail head. This is a relatively flat section for about 3/4 mile. \nLeft at the asphalt along Woodridge Loop Trail\, immediate right at the split\, then continue until it comes to an end at a junction. Left and continue to another junction. Make a right\, go about 50′ to another junction\, make a right again\, then 300′ to Autumn Ridge Trail. \nLeft and continue for about a mile. This is a fire road and a steady climb. We continue until 5-points junction. \nMake a hard left onto Sunrise trail\, then up to the bench. There\, we’ll stop for a snack and beverage share (https://www.meetup.com/Hiking-Plus/messages/boards/thread/50879772). \nFor the return\, we’ll turn right and follow Long Canyon Trail back to the parking lot. \nA picture of the route is posted at the end of the description. \nInteresting Notes: \nTake notice of the Eucalyptus tree at the trailhead. \nAlong the left side of the trail during the last 200′ (last because we are doing a counter-clockwise loop)\, you will see: \nWhite Sage – the leaves are very fragrant when pinched \nElderberry – The blue or purple berries can be made into elderberry wine\, jam\, syrup\, and pies. \nHike \nDistance: 3 milesGain: 650Distribution: A moderate fire-road climb at the middle portion of the hike.Difficulty (https://www.meetup.com/Hiking-Plus/messages/boards/thread/50879781): Fit Beginner.Shape: Loop\, counter-clockwise.Pace: 2.0 mph.Trail Type: Fire road\, single and double track. Areas of sand\, gravel\, and rock\, some of it rugged.Trail Variations:The beginning is a flat walk. The middle will have an extended incline of about 1000 steps. The end is downhill\, but somewhat steep.Duration: 3.5 hoursDogs: Yes.Restrooms: NoDrinking Fountains: No.Parking: Free in the paved parking area in front of the trail head. \nWhat to bring:1 liter of water for every 3 miles.Snacks and/or beverages to share (https://www.meetup.com/Hiking-Plus/messages/boards/thread/50879772).Hiking shoes preferred\, but athletic shoes will be OK.Flashlight or headlamp.Sunscreen and/or hat as needed. \nHosting \nRoute: The host knows the route.Navigation: Host memory\, enhanced by GPS navigation as needed.Hike type: Social. \nStops:The host may designate stopping points to let others catch up. This hike will include an extended stop for a snack and beverage share just before the last segment down (https://www.meetup.com/Hiking-Plus/messages/boards/thread/50879772) at the half way point. \nWe will stop at junctions to make sure everybody makes any turns or chooses the correct direction at splits\, else something will be used to mark the direction\, usually a large arrow made of baking soda or some sticks in the shape of an arrow. \nGroup separation:Sometimes hikers wish to move significantly ahead and not wait at designated stopping points. Please let the host know. They are on their own regarding route and navigation. \nDirections: \nWhere Long Canyon Rd. and S. Wood Ranch Pkwy. intersect in Simi Valley. There is a free paved parking lot at the trailhead on the southwest corner. \nFrom CA-23 and I-101:North CA-23\, exit Olsen Rd.Right (east) on Olsen Rd.\, which becomes Madera Rd.\, for 2 miles.Right (south) on N.
