BRING HAND SANITIZER IF YOU HAVE IT.[/vc_message] \nDetails\nO’Melveny Park spreads over 672 acres\, second on the list of largest parks within the City of Los Angeles\, right after Griffith Park. Noted for its picture-perfect picnic grounds with white fences and towering eucalyptus trees\, O’Melveny Park also challenges hikers with several miles of steep\, backcountry fire roads and primitive trails. \nOur hike here constitutes a comprehensive tour that includes wandering through grasslands\, the highest spot in the San Fernando Valley known as Mission Point and down into steep and shady Bee Canyon . \nHistorical Note\nO’Melveny Park takes its name from the well-known family of Los Angeles lawyers who once owned a gentleman’s ranch here. John O’Melveny bought the land in 1941 and called it CJ Ranch. Cattle roamed the hills\, a citrus orchard was planted\, and family members enjoyed spending weekends roaming the mountains. Although areas near the ranch were oil-rich\, exploration on the ranch was unsuccessful. The O’Melvenys deeded half their ranch to Los Angeles\, and the city purchased the rest \n[vc_message message_box_color=”warning”]HIKE IS ABOUT 4.5 MILES WITH ABOUT 1\,500 FT TOTAL ASCENT AND IS RATED DIFFICULT DUE TO TERRAIN. SEE THE HIKE RATING GUIDE[/vc_message] \nDirections:\nTo get there\, exit the 118 freeway at Balboa Boulevard in Granada Hills. Drive north two miles to Sesnon Boulevard. BRING HAND SANITIZER IF YOU HAVE IT.[/vc_message] \nDetails\nWe begin our journey hiking south into Liberty Canyon — one of three natural preserves in Malibu Creek State Park. The canyon has a rare stand of California Valley Oak. Soon we will cross Liberty Creek turn west onto and up the Phantom Trail. After a couple miles the trail puts us down onto Mulholland Hwy. We proceed across Mulholland onto the Cistern Trail in Malibu Creek Stat Park. The Cistern Trail ascends a bit as it leaves Mulholland Highway\, but soon after begins heading downhill\, with views of Reagan Ranch off to the right\, and the Goat Buttes and Castro Crest of Malibu Creek State Park ahead. \nAfter a short distance we will merge with the Lookout Trail and take that down to Century Lake for a snack/lunch break next to the water.  For our return\, we will  take Cragg’s Rd to Grasslands Trail back to Mulholland and then north on Liberty Canyon to close the loop. \n[vc_message message_box_color=”warning”]HIKE IS ABOUT 9 MILES WITH ABOUT 1\,300 FT TOTAL ASCENT AND IS RATED DIFFICULT DUE TO TERRAIN. SUMMARY:Sycamore Canyon Evening Hike
DESCRIPTION:Come join me for a quick-paced (2.5-3 miles per hour) evening hike. It will be dark so please have a light! Should take only 2’30” if you hike at that pace. \nWe will be on pavement or gravel most of the way\, which makes it good for nighttime! \nThis area has a lot of No Picnicking signs throughout the park\, which means we need to keep moving and not stop for breaks or congregate. It is a reverse hike in that it goes down in the beginning and you go back up a steep hill at the end.We will hike/walk down to a campground picnic area. In non Covid times I would suggest congregating and having a restful snack there. It is across from the ranger’s house so we want to make sure to follow the rules and also not be very loud. We can stop briefly to rest or snack and then turn around and head back. \nDistance: 7 miles on Pavement and gravel roadElevation Gain: about 600 ftDifficulty: Intermediate hike due to pace and distance\, but an experienced fast paced beginner or someone willing to go the distance should be able to do it too\, please do not expect anyone to wait for you if you are slower and do not know the way.Dogs: NoRestrooms: There is an Andy Gump toilet mid hikeWater Fountain: NoParking: Free\, make sure you do not park on the street across from the trailhead or you will get a ticket. Park farther down at Potrero and Pinehill on the right then walk to the trailhead.Trail: Out and back\, pavement/fireroad this hike goes down at the beginning and up at the endSunset: 5:19 pm bring flashlight or headlampWeather: Adverse Weather conditions will cancel the hike. Come prepared with a light layer in your pack in case you get chilly from all the sweat! (I usually get chilled on the way back). \nKnown Dangers: Rattlesnakes\, poison oak\, Mosquitoes may all be encountered on this hike\, bug spray might be useful here.It is always possible to slip and fall though the road is flat wear comfortable shoes that you can wear on pavement or dirt. Tennis shoes okay since much of this hike is pavement\, but hiking shoes are best. \nBring: Your headlamp\, a personal snack\, light layer and LOTS of H20 when it’s hot (maybe 2L or more L if you sweat a lot). Its a good practice to carry more water than you need as weight training for a longer hike! (off track here but a weighted vests are really good for your core and that is what carrying a heavy backpack is like). \nCOVID-19 DISCLAIMER / RULESPlease follow the guidelines under the California Department of Public Health (CDPH). https://covid19.ca.gov/COVID information for Ventura and LA counties:• https://www.venturacountyrecovers.org/• http://www.publichealth.lacounty.gov/media/Coronavirus/ \nYour participation means you agree with the observance of mandated COVID-19 safety measures and you agree to follow these rules: \n• Each participant will observe social distancing of 6 ft. among ourselves.• It is required to carry a mask and wear it through the duration of the hike. Of course we remove our masks when we can but…• Be considerate and wear your mask when near each other or near other hikers passing by.• Cover your mouth with your elbow if you need to sneeze or cough. \nDISCLAIMER / RELEASE OF LIABILITY:• You must RSVP to attend this event\, no exceptions.• If you choose to sign up for any event\, you are releasing the organizers of PM Hikers from all liability in case of possible injuries.• The organizers of PM Hikers are not trained leaders and we do not confirm the qualifications of any of its members to lead or participate in trips. SUMMARY:Las Llajas Canyon to an Abandoned Mining Operation Hike
DESCRIPTION:I had a few people asking about doing this hike again so lets do it while the weather is still a little cooler (hopefully)! The last time we hiked this we saw evidence of what was mined there! Shells! Each time I go I see or learn something different about the place. \nStarting out Las Llajas has some shade\, the way up to the mine there will not be any shade\, so make sure you are prepared for sun exposure. This hike should probably only take about 2 hours but allow for 3 just in case! We will take a short break to explore the mine area and then head back the way we came. \nDistance: 6 milesElevation Gain: 1000′Difficulty: Easy IntermediateDogs: noRestrooms: noWater Fountain: NoParking: Free on the street but be mindful of the signsTrail: Out and backSunset: 5:23 pmWeather: If it is hotter than 85 I may cancel since there is no shade on the way to the mine. Wind over 15 mph or rain may also cancel the hike. \nKnown Dangers: Rattlesnakes can be on this trail so beware! Slip-‘n-fall is always possible so please wear good shoes or use poles if you wish to\, poison oak may also be on the trail so watch what you brush up against. \nBring: At least 2 liters of water\, more if you sweat a lot! A snack if you think you need one for when we take a little break at the mine.Flashlight/headlamp might not be needed unless you are really slow\, it is always a good practice to bring extra things such as a light and extra water\, to provide experience carrying extra weight for a longer hike!Sunscreen/hat or sunglasses if you burn easily since part of the hike is exposed and we will be in full sun at some point. SUMMARY:Oak Spring and Yerba Buena Ridge Loop
DESCRIPTION:***Hike is waitlisted. For the time being\, you must have hiked with us previously\, strict limit of the total number of attendees \nYOU MUST BRING A FACE COVERING to meet up at the trailhead and to use on trail when it is not possible to avoid close proximity to other hikers. Please be mindful of other people’s space. We will be stopping for lunch but there is plenty of room to spread out while our masks are off. \nNot for beginners \nDistance: 9.5 milesElevation Gain/Loss: 2600ft.Rating: Moderate 7/10Trail: Single track\, fire road\, some paved road. \nDuration: roughly 5-6 hours \nImportant: You will need to drive over a concrete causeway over Gold Creek on Gold Creek Road to access trailhead parking. Normally\, this means a couple of inches of water or less. So please be prepared to drive this water crossing.————— \nPLEASE – Know your limits and abilities. Bring snacks and drink plenty of liquids when hiking. Check weather conditions and dress accordingly and be aware of your surroundings at all times. Watching out for poison oak\, snakes\, ticks\, uneven footing\, spectacular views\, beautiful fauna all while interacting with awesome (usually) fellow hikers can be extremely hazardous\, rewarding and fun. \nVHC HIKE RATING SCALE \nRating a hike is subjective\, meaning the difficulty of a hike will be in direct relation to how often you hike and the type of hike you prefer. Keep in mind that any hike can have the following: un-even hiking surfaces\, various obstructions\, water and/or water crossings or bouldering and/or rock hopping. A great hike will have all of these! \n1 – A long walk \n2 – 4 mile hike w/little elevation gain \n3 – 5 mile hike w/up to1000 ft. elevation gain \n4 – 5+ mile hike w/up to1500 ft. elevation gain (heart rate increases at times) \n5 – 7+ mile hike w/over 1500 ft. elevation gain (heart rate increasing even more at times) \n6 – 7+ mile hike w/over 2000 ft. elevation gain (at times you might be trying to remember how to perform CPR) \n7 – 5+ mile hike w/over 2000 ft. elevation gain (at times you might be muttering expletives to yourself) \n8 – 10+ mile hike w/over 3500 ft. elevation gain (at times you might be angry with the hike leader) \n9 – 10+ mile hike w/over 5000 ft. elevation gain (at times you might be thinking of reporting the hike leader to the authorities) \n10 – Use your imagination \nClass 3 Scrambling: Scrambling or un-roped climbing. You must use your hands at times to hold the terrain or find your route. This may be caused by a combination of boulders\, steepness and extreme terrain. Some Class 3 routes have ropes in place for assistance. \nDISCLAIMER / RELEASE OF LIABILITY \nIMPORTANT\, PLEASE READ BELOW IN ITS ENTIRETY: \nI am a volunteer (i.e. not liable for the group). Safety is a priority for everyone in the group. Think of this as hiking with a group of friends. \nOutdoor sports and other events we plan can be inherently dangerous and accidents may happen. By participating in any posted event\, you’re taking responsibility for your own safety and well-being. The Valencia Hiking Crew Meetup Group and its organizers are not trained leaders and we do not confirm the qualifications of any of its members to lead or participate in trips. All participants take full responsibility for their own actions. If you choose to sign up for any Valencia Hiking Crew Meetup events\, you are releasing the Valencia Hiking Crew Meetup Group and it’s organizers from all liability in case of possible injuries as stated in paragraph 6.2 of the Meetup “Terms of Service” located on the bottom of the Meetup website. Your personal safety depends on your own judgment and experience.

BRING HAND SANITIZER IF YOU HAVE IT.[/vc_message] \nDetails\nFull disclosure: this will be an off-trail “Adventure Hike” so expect the unexpected. Wear long pants and long sleeves.  I haven’t visited the area since 2016….’nuff said \nWe will begin by hiking northwest on the Upper Zuma Canyon segment of the Backbone Trail. Our first stop will be Newton Canyon Falls\, a beautiful waterfall in a lush\, forested grotto with moss-covered rocks. \n \nNewton Falls is just the appetizer. Our main course will be Upper Zuma Falls. While on the main trail it can be seen from the distance. However\, back in 2010\, we did an exploratory hike and found a path to the base of the falls. Although we will be hiking off-trail to get to the falls\, the way is relatively clear of obstacles and mostly level \nHere is a shot of Upper Zuma Falls from the Backbone Trail \n \nIts form becomes more obvious with a zoom lens \n \nAt the base of the falls. DESCRIPTION:Come and join me on a 6-8 mile hike in the Newhall area. The plan is to hike East Canyon which is 6 miles and possibly add Mission Peak\, depending on what the group decides. There is also an optional short turnout to Rice Canyon\, that I was not planning on doing but you can do as well.Elevation Gain: 1800′ (more or less depending on what you do)Difficulty: Intermediate\, we are not a slow paced group\, please do not expect us to wait for you if you fall more than a little behind\, only break will be about halfway through.Dogs: NoRestrooms: NoWater Fountain: NoParking: Free on the street\, there is paid but why? Pay attention to signsI suggest coming from the 5 freeway\, getting off at Calgrove going past Ed Davis/Towsley on the Old Road\, once you see the Nazarene church on the right slow down as the trailhead will be coming up. Sometimes they park all the way back to the church but usually not. The trailhead is on a parallel dirt road but you park on the street/Old Road.Trail: Out and back\, mostly wide road\, with some uneven footingSunset: 5:30pm bring flashlight or charged phone just in case for lightWeather: Extreme temperatures\, rain or wind may cancel the hikeKnown Dangers: Rattlesnakes\, slip-‘n-fall\, poison oak\, can be on this hikeBring: Plenty of water\, a snack\, extra layer just in caseSunscreen/hat/sunglasses since it is during the dayLOTS of H20 when it’s hot (maybe 3L if you sweat a lot)Wear Hiking Shoes for good traction and bring poles if you use them \nCOVID-19 DISCLAIMER / RULESPlease follow the guidelines under the California Department of Public Health (CDPH). https://covid19.ca.gov/COVID information for Ventura and LA counties:• https://www.venturacountyrecovers.org/• http://www.publichealth.lacounty.gov/media/Coronavirus/ \nYour participation means you agree with the observance of mandated COVID-19 safety measures and you agree to follow these rules: \n• Each participant will observe social distancing of 6 ft. among ourselves.• It is required to carry a mask and wear it through the duration of the hike. SUMMARY:Simi Peak: Lang Ranch Loop
DESCRIPTION:****Waitlisted\, limited to small group. Must follow CDC guidelines and you must have hiked with us previouslyThe plan is to take one of Don’s scramble routes to Simi Peak. \nNot for beginners/no sweepShould you join us\, you must be okay with scrambling\, possible bushwhacking\, loose rocks\, etc. \nWrite up is Don’sThe StatsDistance: 7 milesRating: 5/10Elevation gain: 1700 feet \nThe Trail: A loop trail w/ some minor exploration\, single track and some uneven rock surfaces. \nThe Plan \nNO shuttle as we’ve done in the past. From our meeting point on Lang Ranch Pkwy\, we’ll head in on the Albertson Fireroad before heading straight up a “trail” I recently scouted to the Secret Pasage to Simi Peak (aka Rabbit Ridge). This will put us just below Simi Peak. Once at the peak\, we’ll check out the awesome views of the surrounding areas before heading back to the cars. Our return\, and much simpler route\, will take us through China Flat and than back to Lang Ranch Pkwy via the Albertson Fireroad. \nNote: This is the more rugged approach to Simi Peak and will have some rome rock scrambling and uneven trails. \nFrom Simi Peak (the highest point in the area)\, on a clear day\, you can see the Simi Valley\, Conejo Valley\, San Fernando Valley\, Oxnard Plains\, Pacific Ocean and a few of the Channel Island \nThe Story \nThe Chumash Indians lived in these canyons for thousands of years. Many trails within the canyons were original Chumash trails before they were expanded by cattle ranchers. In this large expanse of habitat\, deer\, bobcats\, coyotes and rabbits roam. Stroll to Sulphur Springs or hike to the top of Simi Peak and view the cities you’ve left behind. \nToday\, a great diversity of plants and animals live in the canyons. Wide-spread oaks and outcrops of sedimentary rock provide excellent nesting sites for owls\, hawks and other raptors (birds of prey). The abundance of raptors indicates a large prey population\, especially small mammals and reptiles. In more rugged areas where cattle didn’t graze\, we can still find a variety of native plant communities\, including chaparral\, coastal sage scrub and riparian woodlands. \nDirections \nFrom the East\, West & South – take the 101 toward Thousand Oaks. Exit at Westlake Boulevard and turn north (away from the ocean). Drive 4.1 miles and turn right on the Lang Ranch Parkway. Continue 0.8 miles and park where the Lang Ranch Parkway makes a sharp left. \nFrom the North – take the 23 south toward Thousand Oaks. Exit at the Avenida De Los Arboles exit and turn left (east) on Avenida De Los Arboles. Drive 1.5 miles and turn right on Westlake Boulevard. Drive 0.2 miles and turn left on the Lang Ranch Parkway. Continue 0.8 miles and park where the Lang Ranch Parkway makes a sharp left. \nParking is free.****************************************The Fine Print \nPLEASE – Know your limits and abilities. \nThe Farzan Rule: Posted hike times are the time the hike starts or we leave from a posted shuttle location. I’m aware other Meetup groups offer a grace period for late arrivals; we don’t. It’s your responsibility to know the location of the meeting spot and be there and ready to participate at the posted time. If you have any concerns about the directions feel free to contact the organizer of the event\, preferably in advance of the event and not at the start time. I’m of the opinion that it’s not fair to delay an event when the majority of attendees have arrived on-time. (so named after a conversation I had with a certain un-named member) \nRSVP’s: If you RSVP for an event be responsible and update your RSVP if your plans change. If your plans change at the last second and you’re not able to update your RSVP also let us know. In my opinion a no-show is someone who has no regard for following the guidelines we request from our members and will risk being removed from future events that have a limit. \n1 – A long walk \n2 – 4 mile hike w/little elevation gain \n3 – 5 mile hike w/up to 1000 ft. elevation gain \n4 – 5+ mile hike w/up to 1500 ft. elevation gain (heart rate increases at times) \n5 – 7+ mile hike w/over 1500 ft. elevation gain (heart rate increasing even more at times) \n6 – 7+ mile hike w/over 2000 ft. elevation gain (at times you might be trying to remember how to perform CPR) \n7 – 5+ mile hike w/over 2000 ft. elevation gain (at times you might be muttering expletives to yourself) \n8 – 10+ mile hike w/over 3500 ft. elevation gain (at times you might be angry with the hike leader) \n9 – 10+ mile hike w/over 5000 ft. elevation gain (at times you might be thinking of reporting the hike leader to the authorities) \n10 – Use your imagination \nClass 3 Scrambling: Scrambling or un-roped climbing. The VHC Meetup Group and its organizers are not trained leaders and we do not confirm the qualifications of any of its members to lead or participate in trips. All participants take full responsibility for their own actions. If you choose to sign up for any VHC Meetup events\, you are releasing the VHC Meetup Group and it’s organizers from all liability in case of possible injuries as stated in paragraph 6.2 of the Meetup “Terms of Service” located on the bottom of the Meetup website. Your personal safety depends on your own judgment and experience.**********************************************************************************

SEE THE HIKE RATING GUIDE[/vc_message] \nDon’t forget to join our FB group at https://www.facebook.com/groups/hikingwithdean/ \nOur 6th Annual Super Bowl Pre-Game Hike is perfect: Short enough to get you home on time and prepare for parties and kickoff\, yet big on beauty and adventure. \nThe destination is a familiar one but on this trek we stay off the fire and service roads that everyone else uses. Calabasas Peak (2163 ft) towers over Red Rock Canyon\, Old Topanga Canyon and bowl-shaped Cold Creek Canyon. From the top there are spectacular views into Ventura County\, the Pacific Ocean and San Fernando and Simi valleys. \nWe’ll begin at the Secret Trail (aka the Calabasas-Cold Creek Trail) and wind our way through shaded ravines\, dense chaparral and sandstone outcrops until we reach Calabasas Peak Motorway. \n \nHere we throw away the hiking book (I lose so many books this way) and instead of taking the Motorway to Calabasas Peak\, we’ll go off-trail along some use trails. We’ll not only bag the peak\, but we’ll also circumnavigate it along an old overgrown trail. \n \nClick here for photos from last year\n(Optional: There are a lot of giant sandstone slabs and other formations to explore\, but not required. Members who like rock climbing are encouraged to do so\, the rest of us will take pictures) \nWe’ll have our snack break at a hidden cistern. Don’t drink the water hee hee \n \nBring at least 2 qts water\, snacks\, sunscreen. \nDirections:\nThe trail head is located on Mulholland Hwy less than a fifth of a mile west of Dry Canyon Cold Creek Road.  Park off-pavement and perpendicular to the road \nFrom the 101 freeway in Agoura/Calabasas\, head South on Las Virgenes Road to Mulholland Hwy. Take a left at Mulholland Hwy for a couple miles and then turn left onto turnout.
