SUMMARY:Los Padres Potluck Hike
DESCRIPTION:Let’s enjoy the summer cool evening hike and potluck! \n3.5 miles\, 700′ gain\, Easy Intermediate.\nEasy Option: 2.4 miles\, 285′ gain\, Fit Beginner. \nWe’ll start by entering the Los Padres trail\, through a spooky oak covered section\, then move through until we come to a dead end. We’ll turn right\, and climb up to another junction\, where we’ll turn right onto the Los Robles trail. \nAfter 500 feet\, we’ll take a split off to the right and continue along the Vista Loop until we come to a bench at the top. Then we’ll start heading down\, and when we come to a picnic table\, we’ll stop for a social event. Let’s call it the “Giant’s Picnic Table” because of the thick pieces of wood used. \nEasy Option: In the reverse direction as the rest of the group\, go 350′ to the end of Los Padres Dr.\, left on S. Moorpark Rd. for 1000′. Enter the trail and follow it for about a mile. It will curve left and you will arrive at the social event. \nThis is a pot luck picnic. Please also bring something to eat and drink to share and your own cup\, plates and utensils. If your item requires it\, bring plates and utensils to share. \nWe’ll share snacks and drinks for 30-60 minutes\, before continuing down and around for our return. \nIf you don’t wish to stay for the entire social event\, please study the map posted with description so you are able to navigate the remainder of this trail without the host \nHike Distance: 3.5 miles\nGain: 700′\nDistribution: Most of the incline well distributed in the first half.\nDifficulty: Easy Intermediate.\nShape: Loop.\nPace: approx. 2.0 mph.\nTrail Type: Fire Road\, Single-Track\, and Double-Track.\nTrail Variations:\nSeveral extended inclines of 1000 steps.\nSeveral steep sections of 300 steps\, but no hands required.\nDuration: 3.0 hours\nDogs: Yes.\nRestrooms: No\nDrinking Fountains: No.\nParking: Free along street. \nWhat to bring: 1 liter of water for every 3 miles.\nHiking shoes/boots\nFlashlight or headlamp.\nSunscreen and/or hat as needed.\nSnacks and/or beverages to share. \nHosting \nRoute: The host knows the route. A pic of the route LINK \nNavigation: Host memory\, enhanced by GPS navigation as needed \nHike type: Social.\nWe won’t be hiking at a fast pace because this is a social hike\, not a conditioning hike. There is nothing wrong with stopping\, even if it means every 50 steps. \nStops:\nThe host may designate stopping points to let others catch up. We will stop at junctions to make sure everybody makes any turns or chooses the correct direction at splits\, else something will be used to mark the direction\, usually a large arrow made of baking soda. There may not always be a sweeper designated to be the last hiker. \nInteresting Notes\nThese are a couple plants you are likely to see on this hike:\nYucca\nWhite flowers on stalk. Stalk is often missing\, leaving only the spires from which it grows. Stalks are very strong and light\, so they make good walking sticks. Needles on end of spires. Chopped up root can be uses as shampoo or soap. Roasted root can be eaten like a potato. Illegal to remove live stick in CA.\nPronounced with short u. Dried leaves make good tinder. To eat root\, remove skin and core\, boil 15 minutes. Then fry or bake. Flowers are mildly sweet. Adam says they taste like radishes. The fruit is also edible\, but bitter if not ripe. To access fibers: Soak for a month in water\, lightly pound leaves with rock or club\, or scrape off skin. Roll between hands\, then pull and separate fibers. Weave into cordage.\nWild Cucumber\nToxic. Boil fruit in water to make spikes easy to remove. Inside is a natural luffa. Tubars (thickened part of a stem\, usually underground\, like the potato) can be crushed and thrown into water to immobilize fish.\nAlmost the entire plant is poisonous. DESCRIPTION:PLEASE NOTE START TIME 8:30 & ALLOW PLENTY OF DRIVE TIME. \nWeather should be a Hi of 78* for the day partly cloudy low winds. \nIt’s an out and back\, so go as far as you’d like and have time for. \nPlease review the guidelines to participate in our morning hikes. Here are some highlights and a link to the guidelines: \nhttps://www.meetup.com/the-weekday-trailblazers/ \nRestrictions apply for your safety and ours: \n\n\nDon’t show up unless you’re on the “Attending” list \n\n\nNo “Plus Ones” on this hike \n\n\nSign out if you are not attending \n\n\nEncinal Canyon is named for encina\, the Spanish word for the holm oak\, a lovely Mediterranean tree with holly characteristics. Holm oaks are one of the main trees used to establish truffle orchards\, but we’ll be nosing around the canyon strictly for its beauty. \nThe trail from Encinal is a smooth\, firm\, and well-traveled single track\, swooping and winding with a constant\, gentle slope. We’ll have fabulous views of the coast for much of the way. Close to the top\, we’ll take on the slightly steeper Etz Meloy Motorway\, then the last tenth of a mile is up a seldom-used trail to the isolated peak\, where we’ll both lose and catch our breath with a 360-degree view. \nFrom our perch above it all we’ll see Sandstone Peak to the west\, Simi Valley to the north\, Ladyface and Mt Baldy to the east and the Channel Islands to the south & west! \nIf you go all the way\, this is an 8 mile out and back hike\, with about 1200′ of elevation gain. If you don’t go all the way\, it’s less. \nGive yourself extra time to get to the trailhead- the roads are winding and slow. \nDirections: \nThe parking area is off the north side of Encinal Canyon Road\, almost directly across the street from the Camp 13 fire station & Rattle Snake Road. Park in the large dirt lot\, which is free. \nFrom the 101 Freeway\, turn south on Kanan Rd. Continue 6.2 miles\, then turn right onto Mulholland Hwy. After 0.9 miles\, veer left onto Encinal Canyon Rd. Drive 2.4 miles to the parking area\, on the right. \nFrom the Pacific Coast Highway – From the PCH\, turn up Encinal Canyon Road. Drive 5 miles\, then turn right onto Encinal Cyn Rd. SUMMARY:Lindero Canyon Road to Simi Peak OAB (Fast Paced)
DESCRIPTION:http://photos1.meetupstatic.com/photos/event/e/3/a/0/event_167038272.jpeg \nHoping this trail will not be too muddy after Hurricane/Tropical Storm Hilary. \nThis hike has some rocky parts\, but no scrambling. \nThis hike will take us on a scenic trip from the suburbs of Oak Park to the top of Simi Peak\, which overlooks both the Simi and Conejo Valleys and offers splendid views of the Santa Monica range and offshore islands to the south and west. \nOur route begins at the north end of Oak Park. We begin our ascent\, through a series of switchbacks\, a fire road\, and then a double track. Once we reach China Flats\, our remaining route is reasonably flat\, except for the last quarter mile\, as we ascend about 300 feet to reach Simi Peak and its worthwhile views. The terrain is a mix of single and double-file trail and open fire road. \nThe total distance will be approximately 6+ miles with 1400+ feet elevation gain. \nThe hike is mainly open hillside and chaparral. The weather can range from calm to windy and from warm to hot. Dress accordingly. We will stop at Simi Peak to grab a snack and enjoy the great views there\, and return to the traihead via China Flat and then the fire road back to our starting point. \nParking: \nParking is free at the Lindero Canyon Trailhead. Please do not leave anything of value in your car\, at this or any other trailhead. \nDirections: \nFrom the 101 Freeway – Exit the 101 freeway at Lindero Canyon Road and turn north toward the Simi Hills. Drive about 4 miles on Lindero Canyon Road to Wembly Ave. and make a U-turn. After the U-turn\, the China Flats Trailhead will be on the right. SUMMARY:Doin' the big\, Fig Newton Canyon - a Gentler Hike

On our way there\, we’ll cross the creek\, pass under an oak canopy\, and come out into an opening. We will go at a more moderate pace than a regular Trailblazer hike\, and we’ll take a break at our turnaround. SUMMARY:Hill Canyon Santa Rosa Regional Park
DESCRIPTION:This is a second hike for Thursday\, this hike is at Hill Canyon in Camarillo. This will be a gentler hike and we will start at 8:30\, it is suppose to be a little cooler on Thursday. We will start at the parking area in Hill Canyon\, cross the bridge over the runoff creek\, and stroll a mile before turning onto the fire road up the Western Plateau. We will go straight at the crest of the fire road and then turn on the Plateau Rim loop and then return down the Hawk Canyon Trail. The Hawk Canyon Trail connects to Western Plateau Trail back to the parking lot. We will take a few breaks along the way to wait for everyone to catch up. This is approximately 6 miles with an elevation gain of approximately 1000 feet. The trail is a bit overgrown so wear long pants and check for ticks after the hike. \nDirections: \nFrom Moorpark Road in the Santa Rosa Valley\, drive west on Santa Rosa Road for 3.7 miles\, turn left (south) on Hill Canyon Road for about 0.6 miles to the parking lot. \nFrom the 101 Freeway in Camarillo\, take exit 52 onto Santa Rosa Road and drive northeast. SUMMARY:Rocky Peak Modified - Easy Intermediate or Fit Beginner
DESCRIPTION:4 miles\, 950′ gain\, Easy Intermediate \n2 miles\, 550′\, Fit Beginner \nWe’ve been getting some rain. This one should be less muddy because the trail is hard\, gravelly\, and rocky. \nThis is a modified version of the famous Rocky Peak hike. It gives those that want something easier\, a chance to climb one of the most well known trails in Simi Valley. \nIt contains beautiful sandstone formations throughout the hike and there are fantastic views of the valleys. There is really no way to get lost because there are no junctions. If one chooses\, they can turn around and return to the beginning at any point during this climb. \nThe beginning contains continuous and somewhat steep incline of about 1000 steps. It’s a fire road\, so it’s not steeper than a truck can climb. Still\, beginners will find this short climb to be exhausting. There is nothing wrong with taking short breaks and doing it slowly\, as there will be plenty of time. \nAfter 1 mile\, we’ll arrive at the Hummingbird trail and bench. This is where we’ll have a social event. Those that have had enough\, should wait for 30-45 min. unltil the others that went further\, return\, and can explore the various rock formations there: at least two caves along the edge of the trail within a few hundred feet. \nAdditional Segment \nThose that want something extra will continue for 1 more mile\, and just before the final and steep ascent to the top\, there will be a junction off to the right. They’ll turn around and return to the bench. Those proceeding with this segment can do all or part of it. \nAt the bench\, we’ll share snacks and beverages\, enjoy the views\, and engage in social interaction for about a hour before returning the way we came. \nIt can get windy and cool in the evening\, so I would recommend bringing something light to put on. \nInteresting Notes: \nHere are a couple plants you are sure to see on this hike: \nCalifornia Sagebrush \nAromatic when crushed. AKA\, common sage\, coastal sage. Sunflower family. Cowboys used to ride through it and brush up against the pine-shaped leaves\, coming home with the smell on their clothes and giving rise to the nickname “Cowboy Cologne.” Not a true sage. Can be used as a cooking spice and can be made into a tea. Tear off some needles by running your hand up the stalk and smell the aroma. \nPurple Sage \nGrey-green leaves. Aromatic when crushed. Purple flowers. Aka\, Tobacco Sage\, with mild hallucinogenic properties when smoked. Can be used as a spice or made into a tea. Tea has medicinal affects: Antiviral\, gargle for sore throats\, reduce hay fever symptoms and other drying actions. DESCRIPTION:Sequoia National Forest is a beautiful alpine area with some of the largest trees on earth – the giant sequoias. Our campground is near a beautiful natural granite waterslide with swimming holes. Come prepared to get wet! Campground is about 4.5 hours from Santa Clarita. Road closures may cancel trip. \nAdd your name to the COMMENTS or chat so the coordinator can reach out. You will receive more information after you RSVP\, including maps\, etc. Bonnie T. will be in site 21. \nYou must also reserve your own campsite for Aug 25-27. We are not permitted to reserve for you. Reserve NOW to get a spot! \nSites are available for reservation at: https://www.recreation.gov/camping/campgrounds/232785?tab=info.  \nYou may have 6 people per site\, and the fee is $32 per night. This does not include the park entrance fee of $35 per vehicle. RV spaces are available\, lengths vary by site. \nDirections: From Fresno\, California\, go east on Highway 180 to the Kings Canyon National Park entrance. Take a right at the General’s Highway\, traveling approximately 10 miles south to Stony Creek Campground. NOTE: There is also an Upper Stony Creek Campground on the left side of General’s Highway. SUMMARY:Hike at Whiting Ranch - Wahoo's Parking Lot
DESCRIPTION:This hike will be about 5.4 miles total with 820 ft. of elevation gain. \nWe are starting at the parking lot at the Wahoo’s parking lot. We will take Live Oak Trail. This turns into Serrano Road which will take us to Serrano Cow Trail. At this part of the trail\, we usually see a ton of deer\, so cross your fingers! We will get on Sleepy Hollow Trail. This will take us up to Santiago Ranch Road to Cactus Hill. We will take a short break at Four Corners. Then we will come down Whiting Road. SUMMARY:Almost-Blue-Moon potluck hike Angel Vista
DESCRIPTION:3.0 miles\, 800′ gain\, easy-intermediate. \nLet’s enjoy the gorgeous sunset and the almost Blue moon\, and fun loaded potluck picnic at the beautiful Angel Vista! \nThis is a potluck hike. Please bring food\, drinks to share\, your own cup\, plate and utensils. \nSnacks and/or beverages to share \nThis hike is rated easy-intermediate because it is a continuous incline for 1.5 miles. This isn’t real steep\, but it is continuous\, and many beginner hikers have indicated this should be rated intermediate. \nThat said\, there is no reason a fit beginner cannot complete this hike. If needed\, just stop and rest along the way\, even if it’s every 50 steps. This is not a conditioning hike\, it is a social hike\, and you really can’t get lost. \nThe only junction is 200 yards before the top\, where we’ll turn right to complete the climb. \nAt the top\, there is a picnic table and 360 degree incredible views that are especially wonderful at night. We’ll have a snack-share social event at the top for 30-60 minutes before heading back the way we came. Please bring some food and drink to share\, and utensils of your item requires it. \nThe top has been known to sometimes be very cool and windy. Please bring something to put on in case it is that way at the top. \nInteresting Notes \nTree Tobacco \nThe Cahuilla Indians used the leaves interchangeably with other tobacco species in hunting rituals and as a poultice to treat swellings\, bruises\, cuts\, wounds\, boils\, sores\, inflamed throat\, and swollen glands. It does not contain nicotine. \nIt contains anabasine\, a similar compound\, which is highly toxic to humans and animals. It is more toxic than nicotine. Ingestion of the leaves can be fatal. It is being investigated for use as a biofuel. All parts of this plant are toxic. Used as an insecticide. Do not smoke. \nElderberry \nThe blue or purple berries are gathered and made into elderberry wine\, jam\, syrup\, and pies. The entire flower cluster can be dipped in batter and fried while petals can be eaten raw or made into a fragrant and tasty tea. Spit out the seeds. Elderflower water is also used in perfumes and sweets. \nMost agree that they do need to be cooked if you are going to eat more than just a few out of hand. That’s because they have a small amount of cyanide producing glycosides\, which are released upon digestion. Fully ripe black berries are not toxic and you can eat as many as you like. We will do Elliott first\, then hike to our second peak where the power station is for our break. \nThis hike will be a fast-paced\, moderately strenuous 6 mile +/- loop with 1600+/- ft of elevation gain. The Western Plateau is now accessible by way of Hill Canyon Fire Road or from the end of Rancho Conejo Blvd.\, and is expanding with the development of new trails to be enjoyed by hikers \, bikers and horse folks. This area is a beautiful system of deeply eroded canyons\, plateaus\, and ridgelines in the northwest portion of the Conejo Valley. \nFrom the end of Rancho Rd. we will drop down into the Arroyo Conejo/Hill Canyon area and start gaining elevation via the Western Plateau Trail to our first stop at Elliott Peak\, which affords views of the inland peaks of the Topa Topas to the Ventura coastline views of the Channel islands and Camarillo. We will then make our way via the Lichen Trail to the power station where we will take a quick break to enjoy the views\, then head back to our cars. SUMMARY:Rosewood Trail to Angel Vista - Gentler Intermediate
DESCRIPTION:We will start (early to beat the heat) our hike near the beginning of Regal Oak Ct. on the lower Rosewood Trail\, a dirt trail heading up a shaded ravine at the base of the mountains\, and continue to the usual Rosewood trail. Rosewood trail presents a clear view over the 101 Freeway carving up the Conejo Valley. This is a preview of the panorama to come at Angel Vista\, and the view grows larger as you hike higher up the mountain. SUMMARY:Lower Sycamore Canyon on a Hot Day
DESCRIPTION:While the heat is once again with us\, we will stay fairly close to the coast and keep our elevation gain to a minimum. Temps are forecast to reach 89 at the furthest interior point of the hike\, which we should get to by 9:30-10:00 a.m.\, before the heat of the day. \nWe will start in the day use parking lot at Sycamore Canyon Campground and head up the dirt trail\, possibly as far as Wood Canyon. We may actually see water running in Sycamore Creek\, and perhaps from the spring in Wood Canyon \nThis out and back hike is a maximum of 8 miles with 535 feet of elevation gain\, less if it’s too hot. The hike will take place in Point Mugu State Park and Wilderness. It’s mostly single track and fire road. Dogs are not permitted in State Park wilderness areas. \nPlease bring ample hydration. The trail is wide\, but poison oak is widespread. If you don’t know what it looks like\, stay on the paths and don’t stray into the woods. \nNote: We will meet at the Sycamore Canyon Campground day use paved parking lot. Meet near the bathrooms. DESCRIPTION:5.75 miles\, 700′ gain. Easy Intermediate. \nDo not park on Potrero else risk getting a ticket. You need a permit to park on this street. \nThis hike is a great trail when it might be muddy because almost the entire hike is on an asphalt path through a huge state park (> 20 sq miles). \nThere is an extended incline on the return. \nSince the elevation gain is low and the route is paved\, we’ll be likely hiking a little faster than typical. DESCRIPTION:This hike will be about 5.4 miles total with 820 ft. of elevation gain. \nWe are starting at the parking lot at the Wahoo’s parking lot. We will take Live Oak Trail. This turns into Serrano Road which will take us to Serrano Cow Trail. At this part of the trail\, we usually see a ton of deer\, so cross your fingers! We will get on Sleepy Hollow Trail. This will take us up to Santiago Ranch Road to Cactus Hill. We will take a short break at Four Corners. Then we will come down Whiting Road. DESCRIPTION:NOTE: EARLY START at 8:15 at Los Padres Drive \nWith any luck we will encounter the faster hikers of Nancy’s 8:30 group. \nIt is still very hot\, so we will take this Los Robles trail with lots of trees and begin at 8:15 and hopefully finish by 10:17. \nThis is a loop of about 4.5 miles with about 800′ of total elevation gain\, spread out nicely\, with a little bonus loop through Oak Creek Canyon. \n“Robles” is Spanish for oaks\, and we’ll see plenty of them on this beautiful\, relaxing hike. Our start is a magical little woodlet with a seasonal stream. SUMMARY:Corriganville the Back Way Double Loop Lollipop
DESCRIPTION:4 miles\, 700′ gain\, easy-intermediate \nEasy option: 2.5 miles\, 500′ gain \nParking on the south side of the CA-118 at the Rocky Peak exit. We’ll walk west along the Santa Susana Pass Rd. for about 500 feet\, and directly across from Lilac Ln\, we’ll enter a trail. We’ll move along a relatively flat section for 1/2 mile\, turn right\, and make a gradual climb until just before the wildlife tunnel. \nWe turn left and take a set of switchbacks down into Corriganville. We’ll now be in front of a picnic pavilion. \nEasy Option: Wait at the pavilion for about 35 minutes. \nThe rest of the group will hike a 1.5 mile loop\, returning to this same place. \nWe’ll turn right and loop through the park. We’ll pass an outdoor amphitheater\, then make a mild climb to the top of a hill. \nWe’ll turn right at the top\, zig-zag down\, and then make a left to the wide center trail that leads up through the park to its only parking lot. We won’t cross to the lot yet. \nWe’ll follow the trail as it bends to the right until it eventually bends back left and heads into the parking area. We’ll then walk along the side of the lot and head back to the picnic pavilion\, where we’ll have a social event. \nAfter the event\, we’ll circle around the front of the pavilion and walk along railroad tracks for 200 yards towards the park lot. Behind a couple small shacks\, we’ll turn left and cross the tracks\, then head onto a trail and take this all the way back to Santa Susana Pass Rd. and then our cars. \nIt’s not clear when the park officially closes. \nIt used to be posted that it closes at sunset\, but the trailhead sign was replaced with one without a closing time and RSRPD Rules were recently updated to say: Park hours are between the hours of 6:00 a.m. and 10:00 p.m. unless otherwise posted. \nHowever another member says they are still announcing the park is closing\, about sunset. So for this hike\, we’ll try to start heading back before dark. \nInteresting Notes \nHere are a couple plants you are sure to see on this hike: \nCalifornia Sagebrush \nAromatic when crushed. AKA\, common sage\, coastal sage. Sunflower family. Cowboys used to ride through it and brush up against the pine-shaped leaves\, coming home with the smell on their clothes and giving rise to the nickname “Cowboy Cologne.” Not a true sage. Can be used as a cooking spice and can be made into a tea. Tear off some needles by running your hand up the stalk and smell the aroma. \nPurple Sage \nGrey-green leaves. Aromatic when crushed. Purple flowers. Aka\, Tobacco Sage\, with mild hallucinogenic properties when smoked. Can be used as a spice or made into a tea. Tea has medicinal affects: Antiviral\, gargle for sore throats\, reduce hay fever symptoms and other drying actions. Will be hiking throughout the Point Mugu State Park. This route is rated hard but all the incline shows moderate and will be throughout the hike with most beginning in the middle. This trail is also rated 4.7 out of 5 due to the scenic views. Will be on both fire roads and narrow trails with some shade but most of the trail looks to be open views. Now for the downside…The parking lot looks to be on the small side so unless you can carpool will have to do a waitlist and may not be able to move everyone over. SUMMARY:Hike to the Brown Mountain Dam Waterfall - Gabrieleno Trail
DESCRIPTION:This hike is so cool! It’s a good distance with little elevation gain and it is beautiful. \nThis hike will take us to the Brown Mountain Dam Waterfall. The hike is an out and back at around 8 miles total with 750 ft. of elevation gain\, so not steep! This area of the Angeles National Forest is beautiful so I’m really looking forward to this hike. \nThere are a lot of shallow water crossings\, so please be prepared to get your feet wet. SUMMARY:Saugus to the Sea Road to Mission Point

This time from the other side of the mountain. This trail has some great inclines from the start of our hike\, and pretty much a gradual incline until we reach the top. There will have a more leveled off hike until we reach the turn off to Mission Peak. At the top will be rewarded with some amazing city and mountain views. Our return hike is gradual hike down to our cars. Carpooling at our same meetup spot will be offered for anyone who wishes to carpool or follow to the trailhead (Best donuts located 2325 Kuehner Dr # 127 Simi Valley off the 118 freeway at 6:30 am) I have attached the AllTrails link for stats\, directions and photos. We offer all levels of hikes from moderate to hard to advanced only. We encourage everyone to not give up work on your core by joining our easier moderate Events and then joining our harder hikes once you are ready. 😊
