We will start from the trailhead which follows the canyon eastward\, away from the ocean. Then\, it quickly brings you back toward the ocean at a gradual incline. There’s a great lookout spot where it gives you a breathtaking view of the Pacific Coast Highway against the backdrop of the Pacific Ocean\, with sweeping views toward Mugu Rock on the west and Sycamore Cove on the east. After another peak\, you’ll start a slight decline that brings you to the fire road where we will turn around. Along the way\, we’ll be treated to magnificent sweeping views of La Jolla and Big Sycamore Canyons\, and of course\, the largest ocean in the world. On a clear day\, the Channel Islands are easily within sight\, although the marine layer has been pretty prominent this summer.\nThis is a 5-6 mile out and back hike with an elevation gain/loss of about 1000’. \nDirections: \nFrom Los Angeles\, take the Pacific Coast Highway (PCH) north\, 22 miles from Malibu Canyon Rd. Across the street from Thornhill Broome Beach is the entrance to La Jolla Canyon. It is very clearly marked. Turn right. \nFrom Ventura\, take PCH eastward\, and turn left 4 miles after Las Posas Road into La Jolla Canyon. \nHeads up: There is a parking fee in the lot (or free with state parking pass). Cliffs provide places for birds to roost. Over 100 types of birds are found here. Watch the sky for brown pelicans\, falcons\, and hawks. Other animals roam the park\, including coyotes\, raccoons\, rabbits\, and skunks. \nWe’ll start at free Zuma Beach and walk to Point Dume Beach where a trail leads up to an ancient coastal bluff sand dune with amazing views. From the summit we can look out to Santa Monica Bay\, along the Malibu coast\, and inland to the Santa Monica Mountains. In the distance Catalina Island is visible on clear days. \n🦈A boardwalk leads to an observation platform. We may spot sea lions\, harbor seals\, and dolphins swimming just offshore. It makes a great place to watch for whales during their annual migration\, anytime from December through March. \nAnother trail traverses off the eastern side of the bluff to a stairway that descends 100 feet to an isolated beach at Dume Cove. Tide pools await us if we can arrive at low tide. We’ll look for sea stars\, mussels\, crabs\, sea urchins anemones\, and perhaps even a shy octopus. \nWe’ll return to Sunset Restaurant via same stairs and along some alternate trails. If it is expected to be above 90 at the time of the hike\, I will cancel it. \nAs this is an Out and Back slower paced hikers can go as far as Latigo Canyon and turn around for a total of 4.6 miles\, or we can pick them up on the way back. \nOur Out And Back (OAB) hike will take us on a less-traveled but quite beautiful part of the 60-mile Backbone Trail\, which runs through the Santa Monica Mountains National Recreation Area from Will Rogers State Park in the east to Point Mugu in the west. \nThe route begins at Kanan Dume Road and goes southerly a short distance\, allowing us to cross over the southernmost tunnel (Tunnel 1) above Kanan Dume Road. We will start at the parking area in Hill Canyon\, cross the bridge over the runoff creek\, and stroll a mile before turning onto the fire road up the Western Plateau. We will go straight at the crest of the fire road and then turn on the Plateau Rim loop and then return down the Hawk Canyon Trail. The Hawk Canyon Trail connects to Western Plateau Trail back to the parking lot. We will take a few breaks along the way to wait for everyone to catch up. Along the way\, we’ll see the nifty 60’s Teledyne Scientific & Imaging building\, Amgen and the Biotech corridor in the distance to the west\, and Montclef / Wildwood below us as we loop around the north side. There are two street crossings\, both at gated entrances\, so we won’t have to worry too much about auto traffic. \nIn some climbs / descents\, the trail has some loose rock – please wear appropriate hiking shoes or boots. \nDIRECTIONS: \nExit Ventura Fwy (101) at Lynn Road\, and travel northeast 1.2 miles to Camino Manzanas\, the fourth left-hand turn. We’ll be stopping at the 3/4 point by a picnic table\, so please bring food and drink to share\, and any utensils your items might require. You may wish to bring your own cup\, plate\, and utensils in case there aren’t any. \nWe have had occasions where there were no utensils\, so it might be wise to at least bring your own. \nWe start at Conejo Canyons Trail Head\, 2010 Conejo Center Dr\, Thousand Oaks\, CA 91320. \nWe’ll hike downhill from the trailhead for 0.6 miles. \nFor the regular route\, we’ll turn left and continue uphill for 0.6 miles on the Western Plateau trail and follow the fire road around to the right at the top\, then mostly flat for about a mile\, then dropping for another 1/2 mile. \nAt the bottom and when coming to a junction\, turn right onto Hawk Canyon. Our picnic spot is 1/4 mile up Hawk Canyon at the table under the trees. \nFor the easier option\, instead of turning left at the first junction\, we’ll turn right. We’ll take a right and follow the High Road another 3/4 miles then take a right at Crag Road up a short 1/3 mile climb (170′ gain). At the top of the hill\, we’ll take a left turn down the short bypass trail to Century Lake. \nFrom Century Lake\, the trail is level all the way to the M.A.S.H. site. From the lake we’ll continue on Crag Road and at a 1/2 mile we’ll cross over Malibu Creek. The bridge over the creek is washed out\, so we’ll have cross over some fallen branches and rocks just beyond the bridge (I’m not sure of the water level or conditions of the creek\, so there is a chance you may get wet). If it’s really clear\, we’ll catch a glimpse of Mount Baldy in the distance to our east. At the upper end we’ll visit the remnants of an old cabin and the Danielson Monument. You have the option of 6 or 8 miles. It’s a straight forward out and back hike so you decide when to turn back. \nEncinal Canyon is named for encina\, the Spanish word for the holm oak\, a lovely Mediterranean tree with holly characteristics. Holm oaks are one of the main trees used to establish truffle orchards\, but we’ll be nosing around the canyon strictly for its beauty. \nThe trail from Encinal is a smooth\, firm\, and well-traveled single track\, swooping and winding with a constant\, gentle slope. We’ll have fabulous views of the coast for much of the way. We’ll walk west along the Santa Susana Pass Rd. for about 500 feet\, and directly across from Lilac Ln\, we’ll enter a trail. We’ll move along a relatively flat section for 1/2 mile\, turn right\, and make a gradual climb until just before the wildlife tunnel. \nWe turn left and take a set of switchbacks down into Corriganville. We’ll now be in front of a picnic pavilion. \nEasy Option: Wait at the pavilion for about 35 minutes. \nThe rest of the group will hike a 1.5 mile loop\, returning to this same place. We’ll turn right and loop through the park. We’ll pass an outdoor amphitheater\, then make a mild climb to the top of a hill. \nNext\, we’ll turn right at the top\, zig-zag down\, and then make a left to the wide center trail that leads up through the park to its only parking lot. We won’t cross to the lot yet. \nWe’ll follow the trail as it bends to the right until it eventually bends back left and heads into the parking area. We’ll then walk along the side of the lot and head back to the picnic pavilion\, where we’ll have a social event. \nAfter the event\, we’ll circle around the front of the pavilion and walk along railroad tracks for 200 yards towards the park lot. Behind a couple small shacks\, we’ll turn left and cross the tracks\, then head onto a trail and take this all the way back to Santa Susana Pass Rd. and then our cars. \nIt is posted that the park closes at sunset\, so for this hike\, we’ll start heading back before dark. \nInteresting Notes\nHere are a couple plants you are sure to see on this hike: \nCalifornia Sagebrush\nAromatic when crushed. AKA\, common sage\, coastal sage. Sunflower family. Cowboys used to ride through it and brush up against the pine-shaped leaves\, coming home with the smell on their clothes and giving rise to the nickname “Cowboy Cologne.” Not a true sage. Can be used as a cooking spice and can be made into a tea. Tear off some needles by running your hand up the stalk and smell the aroma. \nPurple Sage\nGrey-green leaves. Aromatic when crushed. Purple flowers. Aka\, Tobacco Sage\, with mild hallucinogenic properties when smoked. Can be used as a spice or made into a tea. Tea has medicinal affects: Antiviral\, gargle for sore throats\, reduce hay fever symptoms and other drying actions. This time\, we’ll access it through a seldom-used “back door” in the neighborhood south of Lynn Road. \nWe’ll loop through the NPS ranger residences\, Satwiwa\, RSV grassland\, then climb our way to the Hidden Valley Overlook. We will partially retrace our steps\, descend the Eagle Scout staircase\, make our way diagonally across the meadow\, then take the longer route back to the cars. \nThis is a 5.6 mile out and back hike\, with 725′ of elevation gain. \nNOTE: Please review the guidelines to participate in our hikes. It’s typically completed in about 2 hours at a moderate pace\, and street parking is available near Turtle Rock Preschool. The hike begins with a steep climb\, gaining 264 feet in just 0.38 miles\, which leads you up to French Hill. From here\, you’ll be treated to panoramic views of Irvine\, Tustin\, Lake Forest\, Santiago Peak\, and\, on clear days\, even Catalina Island. After a short break\, descend the hill and pass by the backside of a neighborhood. Continue on Ridgeline Road for approximately 0.5 miles. Rejoin the main trail and hike up to the second hill\, where you’ll get views of Bommer Canyon on your left side. The final leg takes you up to the Turtle Rock viewpoint\, known as “Sunset Point.” On clear days\, you can see San Pedro\, Long Beach\, and the LA high-rise buildings. Maps and signs that I have seen\, use the 2nd spelling\, but a lot of references use the other. \nWe’ll meet in front of the facilities building at the center of the park. This is a lollipop hike. \nWe’ll head behind the facilities building in the center and head left down the Las Virgenes Trail. After 1/3 mile\, the trail turns 90 degrees\, we continue on the easier route for 1/10th mile instead of taking the trail that climbs the hill. \nAfter\, we cross the dry creek bed on a short bridge\, then come to a fire road. \nEasier Route: For those that want the slightly easier route\, turn left. Continue for 1.2 miles\, turning right\, and continuing on this path straight for 0.3 miles to the social event. \nRegular Route: Turn right and it becomes the Talopop Trail. We’ll follow it around for another 1.8 miles until it dead ends at a fire road\, Liberty Canyon Trail. There\, we’ll wait for others to catch up\, and we can share some beverages and/or snacks before continuing. \nWe’ll turn left and after 1/3 mile\, the trail dead ends again at Las Virgenes Fire Road. We’ll turn left again and travel 1.1 miles where we’ll hit another junction\, turning right back onto Las Virgenes Trail for the final 0.4 mile return\, making a left at the split right behind the facilities building. \nInteresting Notes:\nHere are a couple plants you are sure to see on this hike: \nBlack Sage\nMultiple brown buttons going up the top of the stalk\, that may have white flowers. Green leaves. Purple or white flowers that are dark brown as they dry on the plant. Squish the leaves and smell. \nA rare and sought after Black sage honey is also made from the honey of bees that pollinate the Black sage plant. Black sage is utilized in the culinary world as an aromatic and flavorful herb. It can be used in recipes wherever traditional sage is called for. \nIts flavor goes well with winter squashes\, brown butter\, poultry\, venison\, pears\, cheese\, potatoes and other herbs such as rosemary and thyme. Use fresh in a variety of different preparations or leaves. Can be dried and stored for future use as a dried herb. Black sage was used traditionally by Native Americans known as the Chumash people to form an herbal soak for the bath to be used in the treatment of bodily pain\, specifically for the feet and lower legs. \nCalifornia Sagebrush – Artemesia Californica\nAromatic when crushed. AKA\, common sage\, coastal sage. Sunflower family. Cowboys used to ride through it and brush up against the pine-shaped leaves\, coming home with the smell on their clothes and giving rise to the nickname “Cowboy Cologne.” Not a true sage. Can be used as a cooking spice and can be made into a tea. Beginners will still have no problem completing this hike\, but they may be cursing some of the inclines and will not be zooming along on the steps or inclines at high speed. \nThere is nothing wrong with taking it slow because this is a social hike\, not a conditioning hike. We’ll be waiting for folks to catch up at the major junctions. I may put down white powder lines so that nobody gets lost if they fall way behind. \nWe’ll be starting from the tennis court parking lot 4 blocks east of the trail head parking lot and across the road. \nWe’ll cross to the park side of the road through a tunnel\, and turn right on to the Moonridge trail that runs parallel to the road. We’ll follow for about 1/4 mile\, and then go left instead of taking the stem to the right. \nThis will take us to the steps to the trail head parking lot. We’ll regroup. \nThose that want the easier option will cross the parking lot and take main trail (Mesa trail) straight for 1 mile\, turning right at the Lizard Rock trail\, and following it up to Lizard Rock. \nThe rest of us will continue along the Moonridge trail. We’ll follow it around for another 1/2 mile and make a right at the North Teepee Trail fire road and continue for about 200′. \nNext\, we’ll make a left at the Stagecoach Bluff Trail for about 500′\, where it will dead end at a trail of the same name. We’ll make a left and continue for about 1000′ until it dead ends. We make a left\, then the next right to head up to Lizard Rock\, where we’ll share snacks and beverages. \nFinally\, we’ll head along the ridge of Lizard Rock and then down towards the Mesa Trail fire road. We’ll make a left\, and take it all the way back to the main parking lot. Then we’ll cross the lot and take the steps at the far end of the lot down\, and return on the trail we started on\, back to the tunnel and then our cars. \nReturning Early\nFor those that wish to head back instead of hanging around for the snack share\, you are responsible for finding your own way back. Starting near the Frazier Park sledding location where there is ample parking we’ll follow Cuddly Valley Rd to the McGill Trail head.
