SUMMARY:Trail Canyon Falls Trail - Big Tujunja Canyon
DESCRIPTION:*** Safety Note: Rain or Extreme Heat at trailhead cancels hikes. \nMeetup Time: 7:30 A.M. (We hit the trail promptly at 7:45) \nPARKING/CARPOOLING – There is parking on the side of Big Tujunga Cyn Road\, but this is a popular hike right now and parking is limited – so carpooling is highly recommended. DO NOT KEEP ANY VALUABLES IN SIGHT IN YOUR VEHICLE! – there have been car break-ins when people left valuables visible in their car! \nDISTANCE: Minimum 4.9 miles – out and back. \nGAIN: Minimum 1276 ft \nRATED: Intermediate hike\, with some exposed hill climbs. Several creek crossings\, but you do not need to get wet. \nHIKE DURATION: About 3 – 4 hours (including a 20-minute snack time at the creek!). \nDESCRIPTION:\nWe’ll park on the highway at the trailhead. The first 3/4 mile is a dirt road that has some old grandfathered properties that we’ll pass by. At that point\, we’ll follow the canyon bottom along a well running creek\, and cross over the creek several times (you can cross without getting your feet wet). We’ll then leave the wonderful and cool creek bottom area\, and climb up an exposed ridge for another mile or so\, then drop back down slightly to the top of a really nice waterfall. We’ll likely stop there for a break/snack before returning the way we came. The temperature is expected to be in the 80’s-90’s Saturday\, but we’ll update you as we get closer with an updated forecast. \nSome scrambling Involved – To go to the bottom of the Waterfall\, you’ll need to climb down a short section of nearly vertical wall. You can step down\, but you will need to hold onto installed ropes to guide you down\, but to climb back up\, you’ll need to step up that wall\, and use the installed ropes to pull yourself up. Its only about 20 feet\, and should be doable for everyone\, but be aware. \nCAUTIONS: \n\nIf you are afraid of heights\, the exposed hill climb up to the waterfall is steep and narrow.\nRattlesnakes – always a possibility this time of year.\nParking and thefts – we saw a vehicle that someone had broken a window to steal what was inside. Do NOT leave anything visible in your car!\n\nBRING: \n\nAssume it will be warm to hot\, but it’s always smart to layer.\nPoles will be useful for creek crossing and the hill climb to the waterfall.\nRecommend a minimum of 3 liters of Water\, Electrolytes\, Snack lunch; a hat; and Sunscreen.\n\nADVENTURE PASS: Not required. \n**MEET AT: (**Google GPS Coordinates: 34.303714068691164\, -118.25772643048175**) Park on the side of the highway where available. If you’re coming from the 210 freeway\, exit at Sunland Blvd\, go north. It turns into Foothill Blvd. Turn left at Vista Oro\, go north to Big Tujunga Canyon Road\, then turn right (north) approx 4.8 miles. Look for cars parked along the highway for the trailhead. SUMMARY:Hike at Whiting Ranch - Wahoo's Parking Lot
DESCRIPTION:This hike will be about 5.4 miles total with 820 ft. of elevation gain. \nWe are starting at the parking lot at the Wahoo’s parking lot. We will take Live Oak Trail. This turns into Serrano Road which will take us to Serrano Cow Trail. At this part of the trail\, we usually see a ton of deer\, so cross your fingers! We will get on Sleepy Hollow Trail. This will take us up to Santiago Ranch Road to Cactus Hill. We will take a short break at Four Corners. Then we will come down Whiting Road. DESCRIPTION:THE WEEKDAY TRAILBLAZERS BIKE LADY IS BACK!\nRIDE COAST FROM VENTURA HARBOR TO HOBSON\nTHEN PICNIC AND ROCK ‘N ROLL TO THE VANISE TERRY BAND \nBike ride meets and rolls from the Village at the Ventura Harbor at 9:00 AM for about 28 miles of mostly flat cycling along the coast with a mix of bike lanes and bike paths as our trails. \nRoute will take us around the Harbor\, past the Ventura Pier\, up the Omer Rains Bike Path then continue on PCH to Hobson Beach Park. We’ll have our snack/rest break at Hobson then return to the Harbor. \nBIKE ROUTE MAP : https://goo.gl/maps/CGnKu7R6ffBkYD2w8\nLink for planning purposes. Our route may be a bit different from Google’s and we may use more residential streets. Google underestimates elevation gain\, expect about 350 feet. Time estimate assumes faster speed and no break. Intermediate level pace and distance. Too fast and too far for beginners. \nTHE CONCERT\nMy friend Vanise Terry and her band will be rocking the Harbor from Noon to 3:00 PM. She has a great voice and personality. I think you will enjoy her. Vanise and her band perform at many local brew pubs\, clubs and tasting rooms. I anticipate the band will play some classic rock with perhaps some country and contemporary songs. Check out Vanise at http://vanisemusic.com/ Bring your own chair\, hat and a picnic lunch. You can also buy food at the Harbor. \nFYI\, there is also a Mental Wellness Fest at the harbor from 10-5. That event will be in the lawn area. If you want even more music\, there’s a blue grass band in that section at 3. You are welcome to check out the festival too. It will be a busy day at the harbor. \nDO NOT LEAVE ANYTHING OF VALUE IN YOUR CAR. \nWHAT TO BRING: \nFOR YOUR BIKE: Bike in good working order–chain lubed\, gears shift easily\, seat at right height\, tires pumped up and brakes checked\, extra air in MTB tires. Please have your bike ready BEFORE time to leave at 9:00 AM. Road bikes and hybrids best. E-bikes OK\, but ALL riders are expected to stay with the group\, NO using throttle to go out ahead or lagging behind then racing to catch up or pass. Flats happen. You MUST bring a spare tube\, patch kit\, tire levers. If you don’t have a frame pump or CO2 system\, get one before the ride. If your bike requires special tools\, you must bring them and know how to use them. Host will not be your bike mechanic. If you are staying for the concert\, please make sure you can lock your bike to your rack or put it in your vehicle. \nFOR YOU: Helmets are MANDATORY. Be sure to bring water/hydration and snacks. SUMMARY:Let's meetup and hike around a movie set
DESCRIPTION:This is monthly docent led hike that happens on the first Saturday I will unfortunately will not be doing this adventure; I also have a bike ride planned. The volunteer that does this hike is very knowledgeable and familiar with the area. \nFranklin Canyon in Beverly Hills is a nature center and park full of hiking trails. This will be a unique opportunity to step onto a actual movie set with a ranger providing some behind the scenes information. I have tested out this monthly easy hike. The outing will last about two hours with minimal elevation gained/lost. Frequent stops to rest and talk will make this attractive to some people that are not ready to climb the big hills. I do THAT every Friday evening with a Sierra Club group. If you get lost\, my cell is eight one eight 348-8884.

We’ll soon meet up with Temescal Ridge trail and head over to Temescal Lookout. At this point our “NO FIREROAD RULE” will be in effect. \nBring food and drink to share and we’ll find some comfy spots among the ruins of an old ranger station/fire lookout \nOur destination awaits us! \nAlong the way don’t forget to check out an old quarry marked by a single out of place palm tree juxtaposed against the indigenous chaparral. \n🌞Sunset 8:02\n🌕Moonrise: 8:06 \nHIKE IS ABOUT 5.5 MILES WITH ABOUT 1\,200 FT TOTAL ASCENT AND IS RATED MEEDIUM+ DUE TO TERRAIN. Drive half a mile to the trailhead\, which will be on the left (look for what looks like a private driveway). There is street parking available on Michael Lane. \nTrail statistics are approximate. For safety purposes always assume they are underestimated. But don’t be disappointed if they are overestimated. SUMMARY:Chesebro Canyon MTB trail potluck hike - fit beginner
DESCRIPTION:Fit Beginner 4.3 miles\, 480′ gain.\nEasier Option: 4 miles\, 230′ gain. \nWe walk a mostly flat section for 1.1 mi. to the 2nd junction. \nEasier option: Continue straight for 3/4 mi.\, left at the split\, right after another 500′\, arriving at some picnic tables on the right after another 750′. \nRegular route: Left\, heading up a switch back. Right at the top\, and continue for 3/4 mi.\, turning right where it ends. Head down to the bottom\, left at the split. After 750′\, we arrive at some picnic tables on the right. \nThis is a pot luck picnic. Please bring something to eat and drink\, and a little extra to share. If your item requires it\, bring plates and utensils to share. Pot Luck guidelines Link \nWe’ll share snacks and drinks for 60-90 minutes\, then return by a straight path\, no turns. \nFun Facts\nWhat is MTB?\nAnswer: Mountain Bike (not Mountain Terrain Bike)\nThe name I see on a map is: Chesebro Canyon MTB Trail \nWhy is it spelled Cheeseboro Canyon\, Chesebro Canyon MTB Trail\, and Chesebro Rd?\nThe original owner of the land in the late 1800s was Oscar Cheesebrough. The NPS adopted the U.S. Geological Survey spelling of Cheeseboro\, while Caltrans adopted the name Chesebro.\nReference Link  \nHosting \nRoute\nThe host knows the route. A pic of the route has been posted as part of this description. The host may vary the route slightly. \nNavigation: Host memory\, enhanced by GPS navigation as needed. \nHike type: Social.\nWe won’t be hiking at a fast pace because this is a social hike\, not a conditioning hike. There is nothing wrong with stopping\, even if it means every 50 steps. \nStops:\nWe will stop at junctions to make sure everybody makes any turns\, else something will be used to mark the direction. \nEach hiker is responsible for knowing their capability\, only attending events where they are able to sustain the described pace\, for keeping up with the group sufficiently enough to make the turns and not get left behind. \nInteresting Notes\nHere are a couple plants you are sure to see on this hike: \nBlack Sage\nMultiple brown buttons going up the top of the stalk\, that may have white flowers. Green leaves. Purple or white flowers that are dark brown as they dry on the plant. Squish the leaves and smell. \nA rare and sought after Black sage honey is also made from the honey of bees that pollinate the Black sage plant. Black sage is utilized in the culinary world as an aromatic and flavorful herb. It can be used in recipes wherever traditional sage is called for\, however keep in mind that foraged Black sage has a much stronger flavor than that of traditional store bought sage. \nIts flavor goes well with winter squashes\, brown butter\, poultry\, venison\, pears\, cheese\, potatoes and other herbs such as rosemary and thyme. Use fresh in a variety of different preparations or leaves. SUMMARY:Challenger Park Trail ~ Gentler Intermediate
DESCRIPTION:Challenger park offers miles of trails connecting to Long Canyon\, Oak Canyon\, Trough Canyon\, Lone Oak Canyon\, and other adjoining open-space nature areas in the southern section of the Simi Valley. The scenery lining the trails includes extensive oak woodlands\, chaparral\, and coastal sage scrub. The terrain varies greatly with rolling green hills and steep mountainous hills and canyons. \nI hiked this trail Saturday morning to check out the trail and there are still a few wildflowers left and the colorful bushes are lovely. \nhttps://www.alltrails.com/explore/recording/challenger-park-6-3-23-5463b51 \nIt is 5.2 miles with about a 900 ft elevation gain/loss. \nDirections: \nFrom Highway 23\, take the Olsen Road exit and go northeast for 1.9 miles to Wood Ranch Parkway. (Olsen becomes Madera Road). Turn right on Wood Ranch Parkway and go 1.9 miles to the junction with Long Canyon Road. Turn left onto Long Canyon Road and go 1.7 miles. Challenger Park will be on the right. \nFrom Simi Valley: From Highway118\, take the First St. exit and go south (turn right if you’re coming from the west\, left if from the east) for 2.8 miles. SUMMARY:Hike at Whiting Ranch - Wahoo's Parking Lot
DESCRIPTION:This hike will be about 5.4 miles total with 820 ft. of elevation gain. \nWe are starting at the parking lot at the Wahoo’s parking lot. We will take Live Oak Trail. This turns into Serrano Road which will take us to Serrano Cow Trail. At this part of the trail\, we usually see a ton of deer\, so cross your fingers! We will get on Sleepy Hollow Trail. This will take us up to Santiago Ranch Road to Cactus Hill. We will take a short break at Four Corners. Then we will come down Whiting Road. DESCRIPTION:3 miles\, 1000′ gain\, Intermediate.\nThe entire first half is an incline. Nothing super steep\, but beginners may find this climb exhausting. Fit beginners can still complete this hike\, as we’ll be stopping at junctions to let everybody catch up. This is not a conditioning hike\, it is a social hike. \nThere are several routes that can be taken\, and the one I’ll be taking is posted as part of this description. At the top\, we’ll stop for a snack and beverage share) lasting 30-60 minutes. \nFor the return\, part of the route will be the same\, but the last segment will be different. \nHike\nDistance: 3 miles\nGain: 1000′\nDistribution: Most of the incline well distributed in the first half.\nDifficulty: Intermediate.\nShape: Upside down Y.\nPace: approx. 2.0 mph.\nTrail Type: Fire road and single track. SUMMARY:Lynnmere Loop from Camino Magenta - a Gentler (not Beginner) Hike
DESCRIPTION:Instead of our usual starting point at the Conejo Playfields\, this shorter\, gentler hike will start at the top of Camino Magenta\, in the beautiful unincorporated Lynn Ranch neighborhood surrounded by Thousand Oaks. \nWe’ll do a loop around the gated Lynnmere community and wind up back at our starting point about 5 miles and about 850′ later. Along the way\, we’ll see the nifty 60’s Teledyne Scientific & Imaging building\, Amgen and the Biotech corridor in the distance to the west\, and Montclef / Wildwood below us as we loop around the north side. There are two street crossings\, both at gated entrances\, so we won’t have to worry too much about auto traffic. \nIn some climbs / descents\, the trail has some loose rock – please wear appropriate hiking shoes or boots. \nDIRECTIONS: \nExit Ventura Fwy (101) at Lynn Road\, and travel northeast 1.2 miles to Camino Manzanas\, the fourth left-hand turn. Take Camino Manzanas 0.3 miles to Camino Magenta\, and turn right. Park in any legal spot between the intersection and the trailhead at the top of the hill. DESCRIPTION:3 miles\, 650′ gain\, Fit Beginner\nEasy option\, 1.4 miles\, 450′ gain\, Fit Beginner \nThose that prefer the Easy Option\, should head UP from the trail head\, waiting when they get to the bench at the top. \nFor the rest of us: Starting from the trailhead parking lot\, we head west on the Woodridge Connector along the sides of houses\, which is the back way. This is a relatively flat section for about 3/4 mile. \nLeft at the asphalt along Woodridge Loop Trail\, immediate right at the split\, then continue until it comes to an end at a junction. Left and continue to another junction. Make a right\, go about 50′ to another junction\, make a right again\, then 300′ to Autumn Ridge Trail. \nLeft and continue for about a mile. This is a fire road and a steady climb. We continue until 5-points junction. \nMake a hard left onto Sunrise trail\, then up to the bench. There\, we’ll meet with those that took the easy option\, and stop for a snack and beverage share. \nFor the return\, we’ll turn right and follow Long Canyon Trail down to the parking lot. \nInteresting Notes:\nTake notice of the Eucalyptus tree at the trailhead. \nAlong the left side of the trail during the last 200′ (last because we are doing a counter-clockwise loop)\, you will see: \nWhite Sage – the leaves are very fragrant when pinched\nElderberry  – The blue or purple berries can be made into elderberry wine\, jam\, syrup\, and pies. \nHike\nDistance: 3 mi (easier option\, 1.4 mi)\nGain: 650′ (easier option\, 450′)\nDistribution: A moderate fire-road climb at the middle portion of the hike.\nDifficulty: Fit Beginner.\nShape: Loop\, counter-clockwise.\nPace: 2.0 mph.\nTrail Type: Fire road\, single and double track. Free parking in dirt lot on side of the road. \nVisit the online Sierra Activities Schedule to see the rest of the monthly 2023 Saturday Peaks in the Santa Monica Mountains. SUMMARY:The Pianobox Prospect via Fish Canyon trail

It’s said these hills were once inhabited by the Allikliks a branch of the Shoshonean tribe. There is also a lot of lore surrounding this place that includes talk of Indian burial grounds\, gold mines\, spanish gold\, and even ghosts. Pianobox was named for the Piano that was said to be brought up there by the miners back in the old mining days in this area. With that said one thing you can guarantee is water crossings and lots of them. The water levels are more foot crossings now which makes this trail a good time to go before the weather heats up. SUMMARY:Hike to the Brown Mountain Dam Waterfall - Gabrieleno Trail
DESCRIPTION:This hike is so cool! It’s a good distance with little elevation gain and it is beautiful. \nThis hike will take us to the Brown Mountain Dam Waterfall. The hike is an out and back at around 8.7 miles total with 650 ft. of elevation gain\, so not steep! We’ll hike up to Danielson monument and enjoy potluck and “Peace\, Love and Joy.” \nPlease bring food and drinks to share.\nWe’ll have our typical snack-share social event at the top for 60-90 minutes before heading back the way we came. Please bring some food and drink to share. If your item requires plates or utensils (ex: rice\, macaroni salad\, etc.)\, please bring them. \nYou will see several plants of note: \nTree Tobacco\nThe Cahuilla Indians used the leaves interchangeably with other tobacco species in hunting rituals and as a poultice to treat swellings\, bruises\, cuts\, wounds\, boils\, sores\, inflamed throat\, and swollen glands. It does not contain nicotine. \nIt contains anabasine\, a similar compound\, which is highly toxic to humans and animals. It is more toxic than nicotine. Ingestion of the leaves can be fatal. It is being investigated for use as a biofuel. All parts of this plant are toxic. Used as an insecticide. Do not smoke. \nElderberry\nThe blue or purple berries are gathered and made into elderberry wine\, jam\, syrup\, and pies. The entire flower cluster can be dipped in batter and fried while petals can be eaten raw or made into a fragrant and tasty tea. Spit out the seeds. Elderflower water is also used in perfumes and sweets. \nMost agree that they do need to be cooked if you are going to eat more than just a few out of hand. That’s because they have a small amount of cyanide producing glycosides\, which are released upon digestion. Fully ripe black berries are not toxic and you can eat as many as you like. SUMMARY:Fossil and Old Boney Trails - Intermediate Hike
DESCRIPTION:Join us on this sweet (maybe not so sweet!) hike that wanders through grasslands and chaparral\, down into a canyon\, then up to eye-stretching views. We will follow Sycamore Canyon fire road until it intersects with the Fossil Trail. We will then take the Fossil Trail to the Old Boney Trail. The Fossil Trail features a hunk of fist-sized marine fossils smack dab in the middle of our path- we’ll actually walk on prehistory. \nIf it’s a clear day\, we’ll easily be able to see Santa Cruz Island\, as well as the Los Padres Mountain range. When we reach the Old Boney Trail\, we will make a left and continue on Old Boney until it intersects with the Danielson Fire Road. We will then take the Danielson Fire Road back to the cars. \nThis hike will be approximately 6.5 miles with an elevation gain of approximately 1700 feet. Bring poles if you favor them. \nDIRECTIONS: \nExit Ventura Fwy (101) at Lynn Road. Take Lynn Road southwest 5.25 miles to Via Goleta. SUMMARY:Paradise Falls - The easy way
DESCRIPTION:3.5 miles\, 650′ gain\, Fit Beginner \nA hike to Paradise Falls is one of the most popular things to do when visiting Simi Valley\, yet a lot of people that live nearby rarely do this fun hike. \nThere are several paths one can take. This route is the easy way to Paradise Falls and suitable for fit beginners. \nThe waterfall is flowing fully even during our drought conditions. It is fed by urban run-off (surface water waste created by urbanization). It feeds into a small pond. I’ve seen people swimming and diving here\, but it is not safe or legal due to health risks and debris hidden below the surface. \nThe Route\nTo the Main Parking Lot\nWe’ll be starting from the tennis court parking lot 4 blocks east of the trail head parking lot and across the road. We’ll take a tunnel that goes under the road and make our way to the park side of the road. We’ll turn right (west) for 1 block\, where we’ll see an entrance to the Moonridge trail that runs parallel to the road. \nWe’ll enter and make a right\, following it around past the first set of junctions\, continuing for about 1/4 mile\, and then follow it around to the left instead of taking the stem to the right. \nThis will take us to the steps to the main trail head parking lot on the right side. We’ll turn right\, going up the stairs\, and head across the lot to the entrance of the Mesa trail. \nTo the Tepee\nWe’ll take that trail\, past the gate\, and after 2000′\, turn left on the North Tepee Trail. We’ll follow this down for 2000′ more to a large Tepee structure. We’ll regroup\, we can take a few pictures\, there’s a drinking fountain\, and we can rest a moment. \nTo the Waterfall\nWe’ll then continue down to the Paradise Falls waterfall by following the zig-zag trail and taking a stair case down. \nThe Snack Share\nAfter a short visit\, we’ll return a different way\, heading partly back up and across the back side of the waterfall along Wildwood Canyon trail. After about another 100 yards\, we’ll come to a couple picnic tables on the right where we’ll share snacks and beverages. \nReturning Early\nIf you head back early instead of staying for the entire social event\, you are responsible for finding your own way back\, although there is almost always someone leaving early that knows the route. Please study the map in this description. \nContinuing with the group\nFor this hike\, we’ll take the easiest way back. We continue on this trail and it comes to a dead end\, we make a right and then immediate left onto the Indian Creek trail. We’ll follow this all the way back to our cars\, making a right towards the end when it dead ends again. \nSome Plants on this hike \nPrickly Pear Cactus\nInside and fruit are edible. Remove needles and scrape to remove hairs\, cut top off\, hollow out to make water container. Burn or scrape off needles – even stones can be used if you don’t have a knife. Fruit peels easily. Eat seeds and all. Use duct tape to remove thorns from hands. \nLemonade Berry\nSome saps can produce skin allergic reactions. Good kindling. Usually\, the berries are toxic. They are covered with a gooey sour (like lemon) coating. Hikers sometimes drop a seed or two into their water bottles to give the water a tang. Wide leaves\, rounded tips\, edges are smooth\, dull on back. Can only be found in the California hills. \nDirections:\nWildwood Park\n635 W Avenida De Los Arboles\nThousand Oaks\, CA 91360 \nThis is not the main trailhead lot. SUMMARY:Hump Day Hike: Musch Loop to Eagle Rock
DESCRIPTION:Eagle Rock\, the most impressive landmark in all of Topanga State Park\, will afford us an airy perch overlooking the upper watershed of Santa Ynez Canyon and the ocean beyond. After contouring around a couple of north-flowing ravines\, we rise to meet a trailside campground at the former Musch Ranch. \n \nBeyond the campground\, Musch Trail climbs through sun-baked\, fragrant chaparral. \n \nAfter many twists and turns we will reach a ridgetop fire road at Eagle Junction. We begin to see Eagle Rock looming over ravines plunging south toward the sea. The rock\, a sandstone outcrop pitted with small caves\, is a good example of the 15-million-year-old Topanga Canyon Formation that crops out in various parts of the Santa Monica Mountains. \n \nWe’ll return to Trippet Ranch via the rolling East Topanga Fire Road. Hike is about 5 miles. \nBring a snacks and drink to share and we’ll usher in the New Year \n[vc_message style=”square” message_box_color=”warning” icon_fontawesome=”fa fa-area-chart”]HIKE IS ABOUT 5 MILES WITH ABOUT 1\,000 FT TOTAL ASCENT AND IS RATED EASY+. See the Hike Ratings Guide[/vc_message] \n\n  \nDirections\nFrom Topanga Canyon Boulevard\, turn east on Entrada Road; that’s to the left if you are coming from the San Fernando Valley. Follow Entrada Road by turning left at every opportunity until you arrive at Topanga State Park. \nPark on street before the last left turn (and walk a couple blocks) or pay the ranger in the park ($12?). If you park on street be sure that your left wheels are inside the white line. Note parking restrictions. We’ll meet by the bathrooms (of course!).
