SUMMARY:Cave of Munitz - Intermediate
DESCRIPTION:Intermediate\, 4.5 miles\, 1100′ gain. \nIntermediate hikers will love this hike. It is not well suited for beginners. It has some of the most variations of terrain of any hike in the area and is one of my personal favorites. \nThis is an interesting gem and one of the famous formations that every hiker in the Los Angeles area should see. It’s a hike to a true cave! \n \nWe’ll start out with a rather flat walk behind some houses and then under some trees for a park like setting. The trail then continues past a fence\, where we’ll turn right and head for the cave. There will be an ascent to the cave entrance\, but it’s only a couple hundred steps. \n \nThe cave can be entered easily by some\, while others take a bit longer. We’ll wait until everybody gets through. If you are carrying hiking poles or water\, you’ll need to be able to attach them to your body so that both hands are free. Some prefer gloves because there will be places where it is necessary to put your hands on the rocks. Some prefer long pants because there may be spots where you’ll be putting your knees on the rocks. \n \nAfter coming out the exit\, there will be a short period of rock scrambling that is best done in the daylight\, followed by a very steep incline to the top for about 500 steps. This is the hardest part of the hike\, and even seasoned hikers will stop several times to take a breather while making their way up. \n \nFrom here we’ll make our way along the top ridge to an area where we’ll stop and have a social event (https://www.meetup.com/Hiking-Plus/messages/boards/thread/50879772)that will last 30-60 minutes. Please bring snacks and/or drinks (https://www.meetup.com/Hiking-Plus/messages/boards/thread/50879772) to share. \nWe’ll head back around the back side of the mountain\, connecting back up with the original route to the cave for the return. \nThe Route: \n \nHikeDistance: 4.5 milesGain: 1100′Distribution: Most of the incline is concentrated in the second quarter.Difficulty (https://www.meetup.com/Hiking-Plus/messages/boards/thread/50879781): Intermediate.Shape: Counterclockwise lollipop.Pace: approx. 2.0 mph.\, significantly slower through cave and on steep ascents.Trail Type: Fire road\, double track\, single track\, cave\, rock scrambling.Trail Variations:There is a steep ascent for about 500 steps. There will be some rock scrambling after exiting the cave.Entering and exiting the cave can require some stemming. Please have two hands free. \nDuration: 3.5 hoursDogs: No. \nRestrooms: NoDrinking Fountains: No.Parking: Free along street. \nWhat to bring:1 liter of water for every 3 miles.Hiking shoes/bootsFlashlight or headlamp.Sunscreen and/or hat as needed.Gloves (optional).Snacks and/or beverages to share (https://www.meetup.com/Hiking-Plus/messages/boards/thread/50879772). \nSpecial Notes:It is best that you have two hands free for traversing into and out of the cave\, and for the rock scrambling required after the cave. This means that any water or poles should be able to be carried by attaching to your pack or body. \nKnown Dangers: Rattlesnakes\, slip-‘n-fall. \nHosting \nRoute: The host knows the route. A pic of the route has been posted as part of this description. \nNavigation: Host memory\, enhanced by GPS navigation as needed. \nHike type: Social. We won’t be hiking at a fast pace because this is a social hike\, not a conditioning hike. There is nothing wrong with stopping\, even if it means every 50 steps. See “How hard is this hike” in the discussion section (LINK (https://www.meetup.com/Hiking-Plus/messages/boards/thread/50879781)). \nStops:The host may designate stopping points to let others catch up. This hike will include an extended stop for a snack and beverage (https://www.meetup.com/Hiking-Plus/messages/boards/thread/50879772) share at the half way point. We will stop at junctions to make sure everybody makes any turns or chooses the correct direction at splits\, else something will be used to mark the direction\, usually a large arrow made of baking soda. There may not always be a sweeper designated to be the last hiker. \nEach hiker is responsible for knowing their capability\, only attending events where they are able to sustain the described pace\, for keeping up with the group sufficiently enough to make the turns and not get left behind\, and for making sure the host is notified if they are going to split from the group. \nGroup separation:Sometimes hikers wish to move significantly ahead and not wait at designated stopping points. Please let the host know. They are on their own regarding route and navigation. If others follow\, it is group hijacking: Incorrect routes may be taken and group splitting may occur. Please don’t do this. \nInteresting Notes \nHere are a couple plants you are sure to see on this hike: \nJimson Weed \nThe plant got its name from Jamestown\, because in 1676\, Jamestown\, VA soldiers ate this plant in their salad and became psychotic for 11 days. \nThe leaves and seeds are used to make medicine. Despite serious safety concerns\, jimson weed is used to treat asthma\, cough\, flu (influenza)\, swine flu\, and nerve diseases. Some people use it as a recreational drug to cause hallucinations and a heightened sense of well-being (euphoria). \nAll parts of Datura plants contain dangerous levels of the tropane alkaloids atropine\, hyoscyamine\, and scopolamine\, which are classified as deliriants\, or anticholinergics. The risk of fatal overdose is high among uninformed users\, and many hospitalizations occur amongst recreational users who ingest the plant for its psychoactive effects. As much as a 5:1 variation can be found between plants. It contains chemicals such as atropine\, hyoscyamine\, and scopolamine. \nThese chemicals interfere with one of the chemical messengers (acetylcholine) in the brain and nerves. Ingesting only a few small seeds can result in serious poisoning and may be life-threatening. Ingesting even small amounts of the plant or seeds can result in confusion\, frightening hallucinations\, the inability to urinate or sweat\, overheating\, and a rapid heart rate. \nDepending on the amount ingested\, these troubling symptoms can last hours to many days\, and in some cases can lead to death. Touching he plant can cause dermatitis. \n \nPoison Oak \nIf the leaves of poison oak are broken or the plant is damaged in some way\, it releases an oil – urushiol – that is poisonous to humans. The oil triggers the body’s immune system and produces a rash. Even dead leaves\, stems\, or roots contain the oil; it can also be inhaled if the plants are burned. Urushiol is the same oil that is produced by poison ivy and sumac. \nIndirect contact can occur if the oil gets onto clothes or is carried on a pet’s coat. Although cats and dogs are not generally affected by urushiol\, they can carry it. Most people\, but not all\, show an allergy to the oil\, referred to as allergic contact dermatitis. It usually appears between half a day and 3 days after contact with the plant oil. \nPeople who are allergic to the oil do not have a reaction until they have a second contact with the oil. The immune system learns to recognize the oil from the first occasion and then reacts to it aggressively on future contact. \n \nDirections: \nCave of Munitz24501 Woodglade Ln.West Hills\, CA 91307Note: We’ll be parking here\, and then walking to the trailhead.Trailhead coordinates: 34.195358\, -118.658544 \nFrom I-101:I-101\, exit Valley Circle Blvd.Valley Circle Blvd. north for 3.2 miles.Left (west) on Highlander Rd. for 300′.Park on the street at near Elmsbury Ln. \nFrom CA-118:I-118\, exit CA-27 Topanga Canyon Blvd.South CA-27 Topanga Canyon Blvd. for 2.4 miles.Right (west) on Plummer St. for 0.9 miles.Slight left (west\, then south) onto Valley Circle Blvd. for 3.0 miles.Right (west) on Highlandr Rd. for 300′.Park on the street at near Elmsbury Ln. \nDisclaimer / Release of Liability:https://www.meetup.com/Hiking-Plus/pages/29622459/Is_Hiking_Dangerous/

SUMMARY:Dos Vientos - Easy Intermediate
DESCRIPTION:5.2 miles\, 1140′ gain\, easy-intermediate. \nWarning: Google Maps may take you to the incorrect location\, although the address is correct. Please follow the written directions. \nThe Hike \nThe hike starts on the Park View trail\, completely flat along a gravel track that moves around the Dos Vientos Community park. It then gently rises into the surrounding hills\, continuing onto the Powerline trail. \nThe first 1.75 miles has about 350′ of gain and another 150′ of gain on the return\, including an extended incline of about 450 steps. The extended incline is fire road\, so it isn’t especially steep. \nParts are ruggedly strewn with small rubble but there are still clear foot paths along the edge. It will get the heart pumping and beginners will probably curse this extended climb. At the height of this point\, there is a fantastic overlook. \nWe continue another 0.85 miles for another 450′ of gain and 190′ on the return. It continues to the next electrical tower where the trail splits. This leads to the 2\,200 feet high Conejo Mountain in Camarillo\, CA. \nAt the end of this segment\, we’ll stop to share snacks and beverages (https://www.meetup.com/Hiking-Plus/messages/boards/thread/50879772) before returning back the way we came. \nThis trail offers panoramic views of the Oxnard Plain\, the Pacific Ocean\, numerous Channel Islands\, Boney Mountain\, Mugu Lagoon\, and the Topa Topa Mountains. \nInteresting Notes. \nYou will see several plants of note: \nPrickly Pear Cactus \nInside and fruit are edible. Remove needles and scrape to remove hairs\, cut top off\, hollow out to make water container. Burn off needles. Fruit peels easily. Eat seeds and all. Use duct tape to remove thorns from hands. \n \nLichen \nA composite organism arising from algae\, cyanobacteria\, or both\, and often fungi. They come in many colors. Not related to moss or any plant. They get all their food from photosynthesis\, air\, water\, and minerals in their environment. Most comes from air\, and therefore\, can be used to monitor air pollution. 6% of earth’s land surface is covered by lichens. This is the paint that gives the look of the rocks of Yosemite. 20\,000 known species. Self-contained ecosystems. Some of the oldest living things. Can survive unprotected in space\, surviving vacuum\, fluctuating temperatures\, and cosmic radiation. Used for making dyes\, sometimes by boiling in water. Some are edible\, some poisonous. \n \nDirections: \nDos Vientos Community Park4801 Borchard RdNewbury Park\, CA 9132034.175205\,-118.981760 \nFrom the 118: \nWest to CA-23.CA-23 south for 7.4 miles.US-101 north for 4.1 miles.Exit 47B Borchard Rd.Borchard Rd. south for 7 miles.Dos Vientos park entrance on the right. \nFrom CA-23: \nCA-23 south to US-101.US-101 north for 4.1 miles.Exit 47B Borchard Rd.Borchard Rd. south for 7 miles.Dos Vientos park entrance on the right. \nFrom US-101 (Camarillo/Ventura): \nUS-101 south.Exit 47A Borchard Rd.Borchard Rd. south for 7 miles.Dos Vientos park entrance on the right. \nHike Stats: \nDifficulty: Easy Intermediate (https://www.meetup.com/Hiking-Plus/messages/boards/thread/50879781)Distance: 5.2 milesElevation Gain: 1140′Distribution: All of the gain is on the way up.Shape: Out and Back.Pace: 2.0 mphTrail Variations: After 1.5 miles\, there will be several sections of 1000 steps or more that are continuous elevation gain.Duration: 3.5 hours.Dogs: Yes.Restrooms: Yes.Drinking Fountains: Yes.Parking: Free in paved lot.Trail type: Single track and fire road. SUMMARY:Sudden -El Prieto Trail to Ken Burton Trail Junction
DESCRIPTION:Out and back\, trail is well maintained and shaded in the canyonNot for beginners. It will be at my pace \nDistance: 6> \nElevation Gain: Under 2000\, we will find out \nDirections \nOn the 210 Freeway from La Canada/Hwy 2\, take the Arroyo/Windsor exit and head north (left). Make an immediate right on Woodbury Rd. Make a left at Lincoln Ave. Drive approx one mile and turn left on W Altadena Ave. Trailhead is at the end of the street (~1/2mi). Street parking can be found past Odyssey School\, possibly between Florecita and Crestford Dr. \nFrom Pasadena/110 Fwy/605 Fwy\, exit at Lincoln Ave. Go north (right) for about a mile and a half. Turn left on W Altadena Ave and follow the directions above from there. \n************************** \nPLEASE – Know your limits and abilities. Bring snacks and drink plenty of liquids when hiking. Check weather conditions and dress accordingly and be aware of your surroundings at all times. Watching out for poison oak\, snakes\, ticks\, uneven footing\, spectacular views\, beautiful fauna all while interacting with awesome (usually) fellow hikers can be extremely hazardous\, rewarding and fun. \nThe Farzan Rule: Posted hike times are the time the hike starts or we leave from a posted shuttle location. I’m aware other Meetup groups offer a grace period for late arrivals; we don’t. It’s your responsibility to know the location of the meeting spot and be there and ready to participate at the posted time. If you have any concerns about the directions feel free to contact the organizer of the event\, preferably in advance of the event and not at the start time. I’m of the opinion that it’s not fair to delay an event when the majority of attendees have arrived on-time. (so named after a conversation I had with a certain un-named member) \nVHC HIKE RATING SCALE \nRating a hike is subjective\, meaning the difficulty of a hike will be in direct relation to how often you hike and the type of hike you prefer. Keep in mind that any hike can have the following: un-even hiking surfaces\, various obstructions\, water and/or water crossings or bouldering and/or rock hopping. A great hike will have all of these! \n1 – A long walk \n2 – 4 mile hike w/little elevation gain \n3 – 5 mile hike w/up to 1000 ft. elevation gain \n4 – 5+ mile hike w/up to 1500 ft. elevation gain (heart rate increases at times) \n5 – 7+ mile hike w/over 1500 ft. elevation gain (heart rate increasing even more at times) \n6 – 7+ mile hike w/over 2000 ft. elevation gain (at times you might be trying to remember how to perform CPR) \n7 – 5+ mile hike w/over 2000 ft. elevation gain (at times you might be muttering expletives to yourself) \n8 – 10+ mile hike w/over 3500 ft. elevation gain (at times you might be angry with the hike leader) \n9 – 10+ mile hike w/over 5000 ft. elevation gain (at times you might be thinking of reporting the hike leader to the authorities) \n10 – Use your imagination \nClass 3 Scrambling: Scrambling or un-roped climbing. You must use your hands at times to hold the terrain or find your route. This may be caused by a combination of boulders\, steepness and extreme terrain. Some Class 3 routes have ropes in place for assistance. \nDISCLAIMER / RELEASE OF LIABILITY \nIMPORTANT\, PLEASE READ BELOW IN ITS ENTIRETY: \nI am a volunteer (i.e. not liable for the group). Safety is a priority for everyone in the group. Think of this as hiking with a group of friends. \nOutdoor sports and other events we plan can be inherently dangerous and accidents may happen. By participating in any posted event\, you’re taking responsibility for your own safety and well-being. The VHC Meetup Group and its organizers are not trained leaders and we do not confirm the qualifications of any of its members to lead or participate in trips. All participants take full responsibility for their own actions. If you choose to sign up for any VHC Meetup events\, you are releasing the VHC Meetup Group and it’s organizers from all liability in case of possible injuries as stated in paragraph 6.2 of the Meetup “Terms of Service” located on the bottom of the Meetup website. Your personal safety depends on your own judgment and experience.

SUMMARY:Hiking & Camping in Santa Barbara Back Country
DESCRIPTION:I have reserved a spot at the Los Prietos Campground in the Los Padres National Forest for 7/11 Sunday night and 7/12 Monday night. I am putting together a couple of hikes for Monday and Tuesday. \nMonday morning will be the main hike and will cover the following \nAliso Canyon – a pretty little hike through riparian and chaparral habitats. \nOso Canyon & Santa Cruz Trail to Nineteen Oaks Campground – after Aliso we will follow Oso Canyon through the steep sandstone cliffs of Oso Narrows. The trail parallels Oso Creek up the canyon to the camp located at the base of Little Pine Mountain. The camp sits on a shady knoll in an oak tree grove (with 19 oaks?) with picnic tables and beautiful views down Oso Canyon. This will be appx 8-10 miles. \nOn Tuesday\, road conditions permitting\, we’ll drive up the road 6 miles to the Red Rock day use parking lot ($10.00 without a pass) and do a 7-mile loop covering Red Rock\, Gibraltar Dam and Mercury Mine. \nCamp sites are $30/night (plus $10.00 for additional vehicle) and you should be able to reserve a spot for these days. I am in Site 002. \nReserve a spot here: https://www.recreation.gov/camping/campgrounds/234001?tab=campsites \nI’ll post more info as the days progress\, but I recommend getting a reservation as soon as possible \nAdventure pass not required \nNote: Some of the trails were damaged during the Rey Fire of 2016 and we may have to do some improvising along the official routes.

SUMMARY:BIKE RIDE - Marina Del Rey to Redondo Beach
DESCRIPTION:BEFORE YOU WILL BE MOVED TO THE GOING LIST\, YOU WILL NEED TO UPDATE YOUR CDH PROFILE (The three questions must be answered with a “yes”) IF YOU HAVE NOT ALREADY DONE SO. \nBIKE RIDE – Marina Del Rey to Redondo and back. The route will be on the Marvin Braude Bike Trail (aka the beach bike path). This beautiful bike path will take us along the beach to Redondo Beach. The street riding portion of this is probably less than 3%\, the rest of the time\, you’re on a bike path away from car traffic. \nIt won’t be a race as we’re out there to just enjoy the day and so we’ll probably stop to watch dolphins\, take pictures\, get some lunch and probably stop for ice cream near the end. \nThe last time we did this\, we had 26 mph winds on the return trip. This time we’re only looking at an all-day max of 9 mph. \nLunch will be at CAPTAIN KIDD’S FISH MARKET & RESTAURANT (https://www.captainkidds.com/) In Redondo Beach. \nMake sure you bring along a spare inner tube. \nMEETUP LOCATION AND TIME:10:00 am at 13509 Fiji Way\, Marina Del ReyIf you have trouble finding us\, call my cell# (DaveR) (818-307-6460). \nMEETUP DIRECTIONS:From the Westside:Take Lincoln Blvd. south to Fiji Way and make a RIGHT turn. SUMMARY:Palo Comado Lollipop - Easy Intermediate
DESCRIPTION:4.6 miles\, 900′ gain\, easy-intermediate. \nThis route takes us through a beautiful canyon via a counter-clockwise lollipop. Most of the hike has a clear view of the sky\, with a few parts that have tree cover. We’ll be stopping at the half-way point for a snack and beverage share (https://www.meetup.com/Hiking-Plus/messages/boards/thread/50879772). \nWe’ll start at the Palo Comado Canyon – Doubletree Trailhead (coordinates: 34.182480\,-118.751785) and head east for 1/2 mile along the Doubletree Connector Trail. We’ll turn left and head north along the Palo Comado for about 1 mile. We’ll turn right (east) onto the Dead Cow Trail for 0.8 miles\, where we’ll come to an overlook on the left. \nThere\, we’ll stop for a snack and beverage share (https://www.meetup.com/Hiking-Plus/messages/boards/thread/50879772). Then we’ll continue down the Sheep Corral trail for about 700′\, turning left back onto the Palo Comado trail. From there\, we’ll head south 1.75 miles and turn right (west) onto the Doubletree Connector Trail and the final 1/2 mile back to the trailhead. \nHikeDistance: 4.6 milesGain: 900′Distribution: Most of the incline well distributed in the first half.Difficulty (https://www.meetup.com/Hiking-Plus/messages/boards/thread/50879781): Easy Intermediate.Shape: Lollipop\, counter-clockwise.Pace: approx. 2.0 mph.Trail Type: Fire road and single track. Areas of sand\, gravel\, and rock\, some of it rugged.Trail Variations:Several extended inclines of 1000 steps.Several steep sections of 300 steps\, but no hands required.Duration: 3.5 hoursDogs: Yes. \nInteresting Notes \nHere are a couple plants you are sure to see on this hike: \nBlack SageMultiple brown buttons going up the top of the stalk\, that may have white flowers. Green leaves. Purple or white flowers that are dark brown as they dry on the plant. Squish the leaves and smell. \nA rare and sought after Black sage honey is also made from the honey of bees that pollinate the Black sage plant. Black sage is utilized in the culinary world as an aromatic and flavorful herb. It can be used in recipes wherever traditional sage is called for\, however keep in mind that foraged Black sage has a much stronger flavor than that of traditional store bought sage. \nIts flavor goes well with winter squashes\, brown butter\, poultry\, venison\, pears\, cheese\, potatoes and other herbs such as rosemary and thyme. Use fresh in a variety of different preparations or leaves. Can be dried and stored for future use as a dried herb. Black sage was used traditionally by Native Americans known as the Chumash people to form an herbal soak for the bath to be used in the treatment of bodily pain\, specifically for the feet and lower legs. \n \nYellow Star ThistleThorny. Also called yellow cockspur and golden star thistle. Generally considered a weed. Long-term ingestion by horses causes a neurological disorder known as chewing disease\, a lethal lesion of the nigropallidal region of the brain. This disease is expressed as a twitching of the lips\, tongue flicking\, and involuntary chewing. Permanent brain damage is possible\, and affected horses may starve to death. Used in Turkish folk medicine for the treatment of ulcers. In a laboratory study\, aqueous extracts of fresh or dried flowers of yellow star thistle given orally showed significant antiulcerogenic activity in rats. \n \nDirections (Palo Comado Canyon – Doubletree Trailhead): \nFrom I-101:I-101\, exit Kanan Rd.Kanan Rd. north for 2 miles.Right (east) on Sunnycrest Dr. for 0.6 miles.Continue on Doubletree Rd. for 0.l miles.Trailhead on the right\, park along the street. \nFrom CA-118\, CA-23:I-118 west.I-23 south for 4.8 miles\, exit Avenida de Los Arboles.Left (east) on Avenida del Los Arboles for 1.6 miles.Right (south) on N. SUMMARY:Gould Mesa road Angeles Crest Hwy to Paul Little picnic site

Yes there is shade and water but we are hiking in the Mountains so it will still get warm. SUMMARY:Ontario Peak and Bighorn Peak
DESCRIPTION:Total Distance: ~14 milesTotal Ascent: ~4\,200 feetType: Out and backDifficulty: Strenuous NOT FOR BEGINNERSHighest Elevation: 8\,696 feetPace: Moderate (25-30 minutes per mile)Optional: Post hike refreshment at the Mount Baldy Lodge restaurant in the Village. \nJoin me on this beautiful hike to one of the major peaks in the San Gabriel mountains. \nThe group will naturally spread out on the trail\, but we will periodically regroup to ensure everyone is accounted for. If your style is to begin with the group\, but not stay with the group\, then this might not be the hike for you. Pace will be moderate (25-30 minutes per mile) and the trail is well marked. Know your limits. \nIcehouse Canyon is the hikers’ gateway to the eastern high country and the Cucamonga Wilderness. Its broad\, V shaped portal leads east from San Antonio Canyon\, 10 miles north of Mt. Baldy Village\, and climbs 2600′ to Icehouse Saddle\, a prominent gap on the great Telegraph Ontario Ridge. The saddle is a major trail junction\, with routes leading in four directions. This time we’ll take the Ontario Peak Trail going through Kelly Camp. On our descent from Ontario Peak we will take the trail to Bighorn Peak\, then return to the trail junction and descend to Icehouse Saddle via the same route. \nLegend has it that the magnificent cedar beams for Mission San Gabriel were cut in the canyon\, then laboriously dragged down to the lowland by oxen teams. For years it was known as Cedar Canyon (now the name for a tributary of Icehouse Canyon). The present name dates from the 1860s\, when an ice plant in the lower canyon supplied ice to valley residents. \nThe lower reaches of the canyon are dotted with private cabins. Once there were many more; the big flood of 1938 wreaked havoc here\, as it did in other canyons of the range. Today\, the boulder-strewn floor of Icehouse Canyon bears testimony to nature’s torrential fury. \nAs always\, know your limits\, bring ample quantities of water\, electrolytes\, a hat and sunscreen\, good hiking shoes and hiking poles will be helpful. \nPLEASE – Know your limits and abilities. SUMMARY:Corriganville Grillfest with pre-hike\, Fit-Beginner
DESCRIPTION:Fit Beginner\, 2 mi\, 500′ gain. \nThe Hike.4:30p – 6:00p. \nWe’ll be moving slow through both shaded and unshaded areas. \nWe’ll start from the Corriganville parking lot and move east towards the back end of the lot\, enter\, and continue towards the covered picnic area. After about 1/4 mile\, just before the picnic area\, we’ll turn right for 100′ and then right again for about 200′. Behind the shacks\, we’ll cross the railroad tracks and enter a wooded area at a secret trail. \nWe’ll take a steady trek up for 1/2 mile and 250′ of gain. We’ll turn left when we can\, and continue up for another 1/3 mile towards the wildlife tunnel. Just before the tunnel\, we’ll then head down a set of switchbacks. \nAt the bottom\, just in front of the covered picnic area\, we’ll circle around the park for about 1 mile\, finally arriving back at our cars. \nThis particular hike is well suited for those that want to hike just the first or second halves\, and then attend the grillfest. \nThe Grillfest.6:00 – 8:15p. \nWe’ll grab our items from our cars and head 1/4 mile to the covered picnic area (if it’s taken\, we’ll head to one of the many nearby tables\, which also have grills). \nWe’ll fire up the grills and have a cookout. I will be bringing charcoal as my pot-luck item. Bring anything you want that would go good on a grill. or go good with our grillfest. \nThe parking lot closes at sunset\, so we’ll end this when it starts getting dark. \nThe planned route is posted as a photo\, a couple pictures from past events at this location\, and then the plants that follow in this description. \nInteresting Notes. \nHere are a few plants you are sure to see on this hike: \nYellow Star Thistle \nThorny. \nHorehound \nThe leaves and flower tops have long been used in home remedies as a bitter tonic for the common cold. Horehound has been used traditionally as an expectorant and continues to find a place in cough lozenges and cold preparations. It now is used primarily as flavorings in liqueurs\, candies\, and cough drops. In addition\, extracts of the plant were used for the treatment of intestinal parasites and as a diaphoretic and diuretic. The picture is what the plant looks like when dry\, as in late summer. \nDirections. \nCorriganville Park7100 Smith RoadSimi Valley\, CA 9306334.263244\, -118.654719 \nThe park and parking lot closes at dusk \nFrom the 118 \nExit Kuehner Dr.\, south for 1.5 miles.Left (west) on Smith Rd. for 0.4 miles until dead end.Left into parking lot\, follow to end of lot. \nFrom the 101 @ CA23North CA-23 for 8 miles.East I-118 for 12 miles.Exit 30 Kuehner Dr.\, right (south) for 1.5 miles.Left (west) on Smith Rd. for 0.4 miles until dead end. \nThe Hike.Distance: 2 miles\, 1.5 hrs.Elevation Gain: 800′Difficulty: Easy IntermediatePace: 2.0 mphDogs: Yes.Restrooms: YesDrinking Fountains: YesParking: Free at the trailhead parking lot.Trail: Fire road\, rocky trail\, single tracker. \nWhat to Bring.1-2 liters of water.Stuff for the grill and/or beverages to share.Hiking shoes preferred\, but athletic shoes will be OK. \nDisclaimer / Release of Liability:https://www.meetup.com/Hiking-Plus/pages/29622459/Is_Hiking_Dangerous/

SUMMARY:Hill Canyon - Hawk Lollipop - Easy Intermediate\, beginner option

After about a mile\, we’ll come to a junction. \nFor those that want the full hike\, we’ll turn right and complete a 3 mile loop with 500′ of gain\, stopping just before the end of the loop for a social event at the picnic table on the left. \nThe social event that will last 60 minutes\, sharing snacks and beverages (https://www.meetup.com/Hiking-Plus/messages/boards/thread/50879772). \nFor those that want to keep it beginner\, pass the junction and continue for 1/4 mile and no gain. That same picnic table will be on the right. \nFor the return\, we continue the loop for 1/4 mile\, then a relatively flat walk back for about a mile. \nHike Distance: 5.3 milesGain: 600′Distribution: Most of the incline is concentrated in the second quarter.Difficulty (https://www.meetup.com/Hiking-Plus/messages/boards/thread/50879781): Easy Intermediate.Shape: Lollipop.Pace: approx. 2.0 mph.Trail Type: Fire road.Trail Variations: The first mile is flat. All of the trail is well groomed and not rugged.Duration: 3.5 hoursDogs: Yes.Restrooms: Yes\, at trailheadDrinking Fountains: No.Parking: Free in lot next to trail head. \nWhat to bring:1 liter of water for every 3 miles.Hiking shoes/boots. There is nothing wrong with stopping\, even if it means every 50 steps. \nInteresting Notes \nHere are a couple plants you are sure to see on this hike: \nWild Oats \nThe mature seed of the plant is used as a cereal grain. All oats have edible seeds\, although they are small and hard to harvest in most species. Oats are hard to tell apart from weedy relatives\, so the term “sowing wild oats” came to be used to describe unprofitable activities and destructive sexual liaisons of an unmarried young male that could result in children being born out of wedlock. \nRed Brome \nGrass like with thorny appearing tops. A sub-species of foxtail chess. Can lead to flash fires. Winter fires don’t kill the seeds. \nDirections: \nHill Canyon Trailhead10241 Hill Canyon Road (address is before trailhead\, continue to gravel lot on left)Santa Rosa Valley\, CA 93012Coordinates of trailhead: 34.226495\, -118.930374 \nFrom CA-118:CA-118 west to CA-23 south.Exit 19 Tierra Rejada Rd.\, turn right (west) for 0.5 milesLeft (south) on Moorpark Rd. for 1.4 miles.Right on Santa Rosa Rd. for 3.7 miles.Left on Hill Canyon Rd. for 0.6 miles.Parking in gravel lot on left. \nFrom CA-101 (from Camarillo and farther west):Exit Santa Rosa Rd. north for 4.9 miles.Turn right (south) on Hill Canyon Rd. for 0.6 miles.Parking in gravel lot on left. \nFrom CA-23 and CA-101 (from Thousand Oaks):North on CA-12 for 3.1 miles.Exit 16 Sunset Hills Blvd. and left (west) for 0.9 miles.Left (west) on E. DESCRIPTION:The Santa Clara River is one of the last mostly natural remaining river ecosystems left in our state. There is no concrete or cement lining its sides or bottom. Until now. The county watershed protection agency (WPD) plans to repair 2.8 miles of the south bank from Hwy 101 upstream to Central Ave. \nSierra Club and other concerned organizations and local leaders need your help to insist on common betterments such as a levee bike path and trails\, vegetation covering the cement and more. \nIf you want to help our local environment\, please listen in and then take a simple step to write your thoughts to the county. Comment DUE DATE is July 27 and more info will be provided at the zoom meeting. \nhttps://us02web.zoom.us/j/84987042466?pwd=aHlaUzI0WkcvT3Erb3p3OEovUXhZZz09 \nMeeting ID:[masked]Passcode:[masked]

SUMMARY:Mt. McCoy - Fit Beginner
DESCRIPTION:3 miles\, 700′ gain\, fit-beginner.This is one of the classic hikes in Simi Valley. \nWe’ll meet in the parking lot at the northeast corner of Madera and Royal\, just south of the Donut Delite\, on the east side of the Clinicas office. We’ll walk from there to the trailhead at 2 Washburn St. where it meets Los Amigos Ave. \nThe Hike: \nWe cross Madera and continue through the neighborhood for about 1500′\, to the intersection of Washburn St. and Los Amigos Ave (https://www.google.com/maps/place/2+Washburn+St\,+Simi+Valley\,+CA+93065/@34.2645734\,-118.8010877\,18z/data=%213m1%214b1%214m5%213m4%211s0x80e82ee581e79e9f:0x42c324cfa0d16fd2%218m2%213d34.2645585%214d-118.7999842). Then we enter a path behind the houses and proceed for 250′ to the entrance. So far\, there will have been very little elevation gain. \nWe’ll enter a series of switchbacks (zig-zag trail) for 1.2 miles to a large cross at the top. This is a steady climb across the face of the hill\, always in full view of the neighborhood below. Beginners may find this climb difficult to continue at a fast pace. There is nothing wrong with slowing down while faster hikers move ahead\, or resting for a minute several times during this climb. \nIt may seem easy to get lost because there are many different cross-paths up the face of this hill\, but they all lead to the same place. Generally\, whenever there is a choice of “left or right”\, we take the easier and more worn path. If you happen to find yourself alone and take a wrong turn (aka steep cut)\, all paths lead up. \nIf you think this hike is too easy\, try running it. The entire hike is an incline and many beginners have declared this hike to be a butt burner. \nAt the top by the cross\, we’ll enjoy the gorgeous 360 degree views and share beverages and/or snacks (https://www.meetup.com/Hiking-Plus/messages/boards/thread/50879772). \nInteresting Notes \nHere are a couple plants you are sure to see on this hike: \nBlack Sage \nMultiple brown buttons going up the top of the stalk\, that may have white flowers. \nPurple Sage \nGrey-green leaves. Aromatic when crushed. Purple flowers. Aka\, Tobacco Sage\, with mild hallucinogenic properties when smoked. Can be used as a spice or made into a tea. Tea has medicinal affects: Antiviral\, gargle for sore throats\, reduce hay fever symptoms and other drying actions. \nThe route is posted as a photo for this event. \nDistance: 3 miles (round trip)Elevation Gain: 700′Difficulty: Fit Beginner (https://www.meetup.com/Hiking-Plus/messages/boards/thread/50879781)Duration: 3 hoursPace: 2.0 mphDogs: Yes.Restrooms: Yes – at nearby places of businessDrinking Fountains: Yes – at nearby places of businessParking: FreeTrail: Mostly single-track\, excellent conditionWhat to Bring: 1 liter of water.Hiking shoes preferred\, but athletic shoes will be OK.Drinks or snacks to share (https://www.meetup.com/Hiking-Plus/messages/boards/thread/50879772).Flashlight or headlamp. \nDisclaimer / Release of Liabilityhttps://www.meetup.com/Hiking-Plus/pages/29622459/Is_Hiking_Dangerous/
