IT IS NOT FOR BEGINNERS AND ONLY FOR MODERATE HIKERS WHO USUALLY CAN STAY CLOSE TO THE MAIN GROUP. THIS IS FOR YOUR SAFETY\, WE DO NOT WANT TO LOSE YOU OUT THERE!! \nNOTE: Please visit the Dropbox link below to read our “Important Information” before answering “Yes” to the question below AND signing up for this hike. https://www.dropbox.com/s/e3wv87jx6mbttgg/Post%20COVID%20Rules%2007122021.docx?dl=0\nThank You \nDescription:\nThis hike has become an annual “butt kick-off” for the New Year season and is well known in the LA hiking community. It is in a geologically beautiful area\, only open at this time of year.\nOur loop route is not on a fixed trail but it does not include bouldering or very difficult topography. The hike begins with a steep climb (luckily when the day is coolest) up and over the first of three ridges. These afford some fabulous views of the entire area. After we climb down the 3rd ridge\, we lunch at the East end of Nightmare Gulch (say 30 mins). \nThe rest of the hike takes us down through the Gulch – high walls and spectacular sandstone rock formations\, mainly flat but with lots of off shoots\, so you need to stay with us. At the exit from the Gulch\, we cross an open area of desert for a final uphill climb to the parking area. There will be some variety in hiker ability and speed and long stretches between waypoints\, so expect to not feel crowded. \nSCV Caravan / Friends Carpool Meeting Spot – in NORTH Santa Clarita Valley (SCV):\nWe do not organize carpools however\, if you want to carpool\, we suggest you message hikers/ close friends who you already know well and trust from a COVID perspective. A convenient place to meet on the way is:\nOutside STARBUCKS (16548 Soledad Canyon Rd\, Santa Clarita\, CA 91387)\, in the SaAND CANYON/ Soledad Canyon Road junction VONs strip mall parking lot\, off the 14 Hwy.\nTHIS IS NOT A CHC ORGANIZED CARPOOL \n!!! 7:15AM SHARP CARAVAN departure to the trailhead (no exceptions). The total drive is ~ 85 miles one way\, ~ 90 minutes. \nMojave (alternate) Caravan Meeting place (For convenience of those who live in Lancaster\, Antelope Valley\, etc.): If you want to drive to the trailhead with “the gang”\, we will be stopping briefly for a potty break/ McMuffin at the McDonalds on the corner of 14 HWY at Mojave – Barstow Hwy at 8:00AM. We leave from McD’s at ~8:15AM\, it is only 26.5miles from the trailhead. \nMEET LEADER AT TRAILHEAD ( 35.377332\, -117.980609 ):\nMeet at the Red Rock North Parking Lot (dirt pad on East side of Hwy 14)\, ¾ mile north of where Red Rock Canyon S.P. / Abbot Road\, joins Hwy 14 . \n!!!!! Be at the trailhead at 9:00AM\, so we can depart up the trail at 9:15AM SHARP.\nWe hope to be back at the trailhead by 3:45PM to return to Santa Clarita before 5:30PM. \nWEAR: Expect cold windy weather; hike will take us to 3\,000 ft. Likely to be colder and windy regardless. Dress in layers – you can always remove something if you get too hot. You can always leave a “just in case” jacket in your car\, if the weather looks better than expected.\nWe recommend winter hat/ scarf\, GLOVES!!\, a WINDPROOF outer layer\, sunglasses\, sunscreen\, hiking shoes/ boots with thread. \nFORECAST: Check it and we will also provide an updated forecast in Comments\, closer to hike day. \nBRING: Lunch / snack\, maybe a thermos of coffee\, lots of water (2+ liters)\, CAMERA\, hiking poles highly recommended for those ridges. \nLeaders’ Notes: No bathrooms at trailhead.\nAdventure Pass: Not required. \nDogs and Kids: Not encouraged. Message Leader if you want to bring either. \nLeader(s): Paul H

SUMMARY:DAGGER FLAT TRAIL RECONSTRUCTION - Volunteer Opportunity
DESCRIPTION:******** THIS IS NOT A HIKE ***********\n*** RAIN\, SNOW OR EXCESS HEAT AT WORK SITE WILL CANCEL EVENT ** \nJoin Dianne for some trail clean up of the DAGGER FLAT TRAIL – No experience required! We’re currently building stairs on the trail….a fun thing to do\, and you can see results in one day! \nTHIS IS NOT A HIKE\, but you will be among some of the most spectacular scenery near SCV. The trail is still there but it needs to be cleared of weeds and widened. \nWe will show you how to make/ maintain a trail. Get that special feeling of accomplishment as you work with other volunteers to complete manageable small outdoor projects (Trimming\, trail brushing and stashing trimmings\, building stairs). There are both easy and harder jobs. Heat\, severe cold\, wind\, rain\, snow\, etc will cancel the work day\, or cut it short. \nPLEASE only RSVP “Yes” only if you can make it. \nMeet At:\nGoogle Latitude/Longitude coordinates 34.360824\, -118.391941. We meet at Sand Canyon Road and 3N17 white gate. \nDirections to Meeting Spot (White Gate for 3N17)/Santa Clara Divide Road.\nTake the I-5 to the SR-14 North. Exit at Sand Canyon\, turn right (South/East). Go all the way past all the houses\, Placerita Canyon. Continue going straight. Enter the Angeles National Forest/San Gabriel National Monument\, and continue up!up!up! Sand Canyon Road until you see a heart shaped memorial on the right side. Shortly after this you will see a small brown sign “Santa Clara Divide Road”. The sign is on the right\, and the road is on the left. Turn left onto this road. Dianne will meet you there\, in front of the white gate. Dianne will caravan you and your car to the trail head\, 4 miles beyond the gate. \nMeeting Time:\nWe will meet at 7:45AM and leave for the trail head no later than 8:00AM SHARP. Please be on time\, as we lock the gate behind us when we leave the gate. \nBring:\nBoots\, plenty of WATER\, electrolytes\, and snacks\, a sack lunch. TP (there are no bathrooms)\, strong garden GLOVES (suede leather type recommended) \, sunscreen\, a cooling towel\, sun hat\, bandana if it is hot. Bring a mask if you cannot maintain social distancing. (A mask will also keep dust off of your face while working) \nDo Not Bring:\nDogs\, as they get bored. Also\, it would not be safe to bring young children (due to sharp tools and trail is narrow in places). Leave your garden tools at home. Dianne will bring all necessary tools for trail work. \nThank you for helping bring back this trail\, so we can all enjoy it. Be the first to hike on it when it is finished!! \nNote: It’s a GREAT workout too!!! \nLeader: Dianne

SUMMARY:Adventure Hike: Upper Zuma Falls
DESCRIPTION:I normally reserve this hike for the HWD VIPs\, but this month I am inviting all HWD members. VIPs are members that have made a donation or assisted with trail work. For more info see https://www.hikingwithdean.com/vip-circle/ \nWe will begin by hiking northwest on the Backbone Trail to Upper Zuma Canyon. Our first stop will be Newton Canyon Falls\, a beautiful waterfall in a lush\, forested grotto with moss-covered rocks. \nNewton Falls is just the appetizer. Our main course will be Upper Zuma Falls. While on the main trail it can be seen from the distance. However\, back in 2010\, we did an exploratory hike and found a path to the base of the falls. Although we will be hiking off the main trail to get to the falls\, the way has become popular and is now relatively clear of obstacles. \nAfter visiting the falls\, we’ll return to the trail and continue to Zuma-Trancas Ridge\, turn north\, and take my (still) secret trail I found in 2011 to to the top of the falls. We’ll take a snack break by the pool at the top of the falls. \nBring the usual stuff\, but most importantly\, bring a sense of adventure! Wear long pants. \nHIKE IS ABOUT 7 MILES WITH ABOUT 1\,350 FT TOTAL ASCENT AND IS RATED DIFFICULT DUE TO TERRAIN. SEE THE HIKE RATING GUIDE \nDirections\nNote: Parking is limited. Please use use Kanan Park and Ride for carpooling: 29166 Roadside Dr\, Agoura Hills\, CA 91301 \nIMPORTANT \nTrail statistics are approximate. For safety purposes always assume they are underestimated. But don’t be disappointed if they are overestimated. \nBring more water and snacks than you think you’ll need. Trail descriptions are based on previous hikes. Current conditions are unknown until arrival. Expect the unexpected and plan accordingly. \nThe Organizers and members of Hiking With Dean are not professional leaders\, guides\, or mountaineers. The function of the member or organizer is only to organize the trip. Each person who shows up for a trip/meetup (and their guest or guests) is responsible for his or her own safety. By attending a hike\, or any other event organized by this group\, you are acknowledging that you and any guests that you bring are aware of the risks\, dangers and hazards associated with the activity and freely accept and fully assume all such risks\, dangers and hazards\, and further agree to release and discharge the Organizers\, Members of the Hiking With Dean Meetup Group from and against any and all liability arising from your participation in the group activities per our ASSUMPTION OF RISK AND LIABILITY WAIVER and Section 6.2 of the Meetup.com Terms of Service.

SUMMARY:NEW Lollipop: PCT- Spruce Draw - to Lake Hughes Truck Trail - PCT
DESCRIPTION:NEW Lollipop: PCT to Spruce Draw then hiking the Leona Divide Fire Rd west to the intersection of Lake Hughes Truck Trail; We will take a snack break at the Intersection then return counter-clock wise hiking east on the PCT back to our cars on San Francisquito Cyn Rd. \nDISTANCE / GAIN:\n~ 8.5 miles Round Trip / 1732′ gain. \nRATING: Moderate +\nYou need to be in good physical condition to complete these\, due to some reasonably significant gain over a short distance (mainly near the start). \nHike duration: ~ 4 hours total. \nMeet: At the trailhead at 8:15 AM for a 8:30 AM start up the trail. \nDescription: \nThis is a great local hike on a well maintained portion of the Pacific Crest Trail (PCT) single track\, only 25 minutes from the SCV! This hike area is popular due to its remote nature and rapid access to some great views of surrounding areas including the Mohave desert\, Lancaster\, Martindale Ridge and the distant Tehachapi Mtns. \nWe start near Green Valley Ranger station using the PCT heading North. We will cross the fire road leading up to Grass Mtn\, stop briefly if it is clear to enjoy the views of the Mojave desert and Tehachapi.\nWe will stay on the PCT and continue North. This is a beautiful shady portion of the PCT that takes us to remote Spruce Draw canyon then on to the Fire Rd returning back via the PCT. \nNote: The return leg on the PCT has some loose rocks and minor washouts from the recent rains so please wear boots with good treads. \nDirections to the trail head (34.634482\, -118.390112):\nThe trailhead is where the PCT crosses San Francisquito Canyon Road\, using these numbers in Google\, or WAZE. \nLeader’s note: No restrooms at trailhead\, plenty of bushes. There is a bathroom in the gas station on corner of San Francisquito Cyn Rd. and Spunky Cyn Rd. in Green Valley. \nDirections from Copper Hill Dr\, in SCV to trail head:\nFind the light that is the intersection of San Francisquito Canyon Road and Copper Hill Dr. Reset your odometer here – the trailhead is 17.7 miles (about 25 mins.) from this light. When you arrive in Green Valley\, at Stop sign\, go straight through intersection on San Francisquito Cyn Rd. The Ranger station is on the left\, 2 minutes later. The trailhead\, where the Pacific Crest Trail (PCT) crosses San Francisquito\, is 0.2 miles beyond that – look for PCT signs and parked cars. Park on the gravel shoulder\, on either side\, near where the PCT crosses the road – this is our “trail head”. \nHike Starting Place/ Time: (34.634482\, -118.390112) \nAdventure pass: Not required. \nBRING: Hiking poles are helpful for the hills. Bring a snack and at least 2L water and 1L Gatorade/ Salt sticks; camera\, cap and sunscreen. Dress in layers as it can be windy and chilly in the shady areas. \nLeader: Nancy Harrison

SUMMARY:Santa Barbara Beach Walk
DESCRIPTION:Our first stop\, meet me at 9:45AM just outside the Santa Barbara Museum Sea Center\n211 Stearn’s Wharf\, Santa Barbara \nDrive onto Stearn’s Wharf\, and the Sea Center is to your left. Public parking on Stearns Wharf is free for the first 90 minutes with ticket validation. Admission is $13/adult. ($11/senior) \nOur second stop\,meet me at NOON at the park benches by the stream at Arroyo Burro Beach next to the Boathouse 2981 Cliff Drive\, Santa Barbara For a pretty drive without freeway\, you may follow me 4.3 miles from Stearns Wharf\, left along Shoreline Drive to Cliff Drive\, to the beach. \nAfter a briefing about the geology and geography of what you’ll see\, (and a bathroom stop)\, we will walk uphill on a well-worn trail up onto the mesa\, along a cliff\, (awesome views) and down 241 steps onto the beach – a total of about 2.5 miles RT. \nExertion level is mild to moderate and not wheelchair accessible. \nENJOY THE TIDEPOOLS! \nEnjoying the beach may best be done with a willingness to walk barefoot into the water\, looking at tide pools\, picking up rocks\, and not freaking out about natural oil spots on the bottoms of your feet or shoes. This is a natural phenomenon in this part of our California coast. Vaseline helps remove oil from skin. Bring any trash out with you. Bring a bag to carry shoes back\, in case you wish to go barefoot on the beach. You will be finished by 2 or 3pm. \nTHEN you can go out to lunch and enjoy Santa Barbara at a leisurely pace. Sunset will be 5:26pm.

SUMMARY:Calabasas Peak Without the Fireroads - A Lollipop Hike
DESCRIPTION:Our destination is a familiar one but on this trek we’ll stay off the fire and service roads that everyone else uses. \nCalabasas Peak (2163 ft) towers over Red Rock Canyon\, Old Topanga Canyon and bowl-shaped Cold Creek Canyon. From the top there are spectacular views into Ventura County\, the Pacific Ocean and San Fernando and Simi valleys. \nWe’ll begin at the Calabasas-Cold Creek Trail (aka Secret Trail) and wind our way through shaded ravines\, dense chaparral and sandstone outcrops until we reach Calabasas Peak Motorway. Here we throw away the hiking book (I lose so many books this way) and instead of taking the Motorway to Calabasas Peak\, we’ll go off-trail along some use trails. \nWe’ll not only bag the peak\, but we’ll also circumnavigate it along an old overgrown trail \nOptional: There are a lot of giant sandstone slabs and other formations to explore\, but not required. Members who like rock climbing are encouraged to do so\, the rest of us will take pictures \nHike is 4.7 miles with about 1\,200 feet total ascent and is rated MEDIUM. See Hike Rating Giude \nThis hike is sponsored by Amazon – https://amzn.to/2GnCP0a \nDon’t forget to join our FB group at https://www.facebook.com/groups/hikingwithdean/ \nDirections \nThe trail head is located on Mulholland Hwy less than a fifth of a mile west of Dry Canyon Cold Creek Road. \nFrom the 101 freeway in Agoura/Calabasas\, head South on Las Virgenes Road to Mulholland Hwy. Turn Left on Mulholland and continue 5.7 miles to a small parking area on the right. or…. \nFrom 101 Ventura Fwy in the Valley: take Valley Circle/Mulholland Dr exit south\, turn right on Valmar Rd (becomes Old Topanga Cyn Rd) then right on Mulholland Hwy 2.1 miles to the parking area on the left. \nFrom PCH take Topanga Canyon and turn left up Old Topanga. Take a left at Mulholland Hwy for a couple miles and then turn left onto turnout. If you are coming up Malibu Canyon take a right at Mulholland for 5.7 miles \nPark on street\, off-pavement. \nBring at least 2 qts water\, snacks\, sunscreen. \nThe Organizers and members of Hiking With Dean are not professional leaders\, guides\, or mountaineers. The function of the member or organizer is only to organize the trip. Each person who shows up for a trip/meetup (and their guest or guests) is responsible for his or her own safety. SUMMARY:Stage Coach - Andora Trailhead - Easy Intermediate
DESCRIPTION:3.5 miles\, 800′ gain\, easy intermediate\nNote that we start from the Andora trailhead. \nThis hike will include an extended stay at the top\, where we’ll have a snack share social event for 30-60 minutes. \nNearly the entire trail is an incline. Fit beginners can complete this hike\, but it will certainly get their blood pumping. \nThere are no super steep sections\, but much of the trail is rugged\, much like a stair climb. This is not a conditioning hike\, it’s a social hike. We’ll be stopping at various points to let people catch up and to make sure they make any turns. \nThe hike covers a portion of an old stagecoach road that linked LA with San Francisco in the 1860s. You can see holes that\, according to others\, were drilled into the rock for chains to help the stagecoaches up the steeper sections\, during which passengers had to get out of the vehicle. \nWe will begin near the intersection of Andora and Valley Circle. We’ll proceed up a rocky trail past a plaque erected in 1939 to commemorate the old stagecoach route\, then we’ll proceed to the top of the pass for a great view overlooking the valley. There\, we’ll have a social event lasting 30-90 minutes\, sharing snacks and beverages. \nThere are a variety of ways of getting to the same place and there are many different ways of returning. Please follow the host to take the chosen route. The return route may be slightly different than the way up through a parallel path. \nThe Hike\nDistance: 3.5 miles\nGain: 800′\nDistribution: Most of the incline is in the first half.\nDifficulty: Easy Intermediate.\nShape: Out and Back.\nPace: approx. 2.0 mph.\nTrail Type: Fire road\, double track\, single track.\nTrail Variations: Some parts of the trail is very rugged over large stones.\nDuration: 3.5 hours\nDogs: Yes.\nRestrooms: Yes.\nDrinking Fountains: No.\nParking: Park in the street. \nWhat to bring:\n1 liter of water for every 3 miles.\nHiking shoes/boots. Not required\, but recommended.\nFlashlight or headlamp.\nSunscreen and/or hat as needed. \nHosting\nRoute: The host has plotted this route but never taken it.\nNavigation: GPS navigation as needed. Several of our members are familiar with the route from this trailhead. \nHike type: Social.\nWe won’t be hiking at a fast pace because this is a social hike\, not a conditioning hike. There is nothing wrong with stopping\, even if it means every 50 steps. \nStops:\nThe host may designate stopping points to let others catch up. This hike will include a stop for a snack and beverage share at the half way point. We’ll stop at junctions to make sure everybody makes any turns or chooses the correct direction at splits\, else something will be used to mark the direction\, usually a marking made of baking soda\, or some sticks on the trail forming an arrow. There may not always be a sweeper designated to be the last hiker. \nEach hiker is responsible for knowing their capability\, only attending events where they are able to sustain the described pace\, for keeping up with the group sufficiently enough to make the turns and not get left behind\, and for making sure the host is notified if they are going to split from the group. \nGroup separation:\nSometimes hikers wish to move significantly ahead and not wait at designated stopping points. Please let the host know. They are on their own regarding route and navigation. \nDirections\nStage Coach Trail\, Andora trailhead\n9861 Andora Ave.\nChatsworth\, CA 91311\n34.249626\, -118.619625 \nFrom CA-118\nTopanga Canyon (CA-27) south\, 1.4 mi\nRight (west) on Devonshire St for .4 mi\nLeft (southwest) on Valley Circle for .6 mi\nRight (west) on Lassen for 43 ft.\nLeft (southwest) on Andora for 157 ft. \nFAQ\nHiking Plus Page Links\nDisclaimer / Release of Liability

SUMMARY:Hill Canyon - Hawk Lollipop - Easy Intermediate\, beginner option
DESCRIPTION:5.3 miles\, 600′ gain\, Easy-Intermediate\n2.5 miles\, 100′ gain\, Beginner \nWe start by crossing a bridge into a wooded area and continue down a relatively flat path alongside a stream. After about a mile\, we’ll come to a junction. \nFor those that want the full hike\, we’ll turn right and complete a 3 mile loop with 500′ of gain\, stopping just before the end of the loop for a social event at the picnic table on the left\, where we’ll share snacks and beverages for about 60 minutes. \nEasier Option.\nFor those that want to keep it beginner\, pass the junction and continue for 1/4 mile and no gain. That same picnic table will be on the right. \nFor the return\, we continue the loop for 1/4 mile\, then a relatively flat walk back for about a mile. \nHike Distance: 5.3 miles\, Beginner option is 2.5 miles.\nGain: 600′\, Beginner option is 100′.\nDistribution: Most of the incline is concentrated in the second quarter.\nDifficulty: Easy Intermediate/Easier option is beginner.\nShape: Lollipop.\nPace: approx. 2.0 mph.\nTrail Type: Fire road.\nTrail Variations: The first mile is mostly flat.\nAll of the trail is well groomed and not rugged.\nDuration: 3.5 hours\nDogs: Yes.\nRestrooms: Yes\, at trailhead\nDrinking Fountains: No.\nParking: Free in lot next to trail head. \nWhat to bring:\n1 liter of water for every 3 miles.\nHiking shoes/boots. Not required\, but recommended.\nFlashlight or headlamp.\nSunscreen and/or hat as needed.\nSnacks and/or beverages to share \nHosting \nRoute: The host knows the route. Click the link to see it. \nNavigation: Host memory\, enhanced by GPS navigation as needed. \nHike type: Social.\nWe won’t be hiking at a fast pace because this is a social hike\, not a conditioning hike. There is nothing wrong with stopping\, even if it means every 50 steps. \nInteresting Notes \nHere are a couple plants you are sure to see on this hike: \nWild Oats\nThe mature seed of the plant is used as a cereal grain. All oats have edible seeds\, although they are small and hard to harvest in most species. SUMMARY:Hazy Shade of Winter Stair Hike #5
DESCRIPTION:Things may appear hazy as we really feel the burn by taking on steep streets and long staircases in Silver Lake. See homes funky\, fancy and famous as we stroll beside the reservoir and float over 1300 stairs. This will be a real workout! Park on the street and meet at 2350 Allesandro Street 90039. Bring water\, adventurous spirit\, strong legs\, and a love of stair hikes. Flashlight suggested. \nHike Leader – Homer Tom \nEvent Organizer – Homer Tom hikerhomie@gmail.com \nMeetup Organizer – Jan Marie Perry janmarie3@yahoo.com
