SUMMARY:Powerline Trail to Conejo Peak - Gentler Friendly
DESCRIPTION:Thursday’s forecast is for 50% chance of rain. If it’s raining at 7:30 a.m.\, the hike will be cancelled – please check before departing for the trailhead. \nFor our Thursday Gentler hike\, we will hike the Powerline Trail to Conejo Peak\, including a brief stop at the “teardrop” loop below the final (and skippable) climb to the peak. Great views of the Pacific\, Channel Islands\, Oxnard Plain\, Conejo Valley\, and (if clear) snow-covered Mt. Baldy and peaks east and north. \nThis area was completely burned over by the 2013 Springs Fire\, and the peak area saw a small wildfire in the last two years\, but has recovered well. The Edison road is rocky\, and has washouts from the recent rains. There is one short but steep section of the Edison road just before the teardrop loop and our rendezvous point. \nIf you climb to the peak (optional)\, this hike is 5.2 miles\, with an elevation gain of 1\,350 feet. Trekking poles are recommended\, as our descent will be fairly steep over loose gravel. \nIf you elect to skip the peak\, the hike is just over 4 miles\, with an elevation gain of 850 feet. Our rendezvous point has seen some activity recently\, and some construction material is on the ground nearby. \nWe’ll start at the Via Ricardo trailhead in Dos Vientos\, walk over the hill above the Camarillo quarry (watch for the “Unstable Ground – Gravitational Anomalies” sign)\, and then up the Powerline Trail. We’ll zig-zag up to the “teardrop”\, and split the group. Those who want to continue the climb will do so like the mountain goats we are\, and then traverse the rocky meadow at the top to the peak\, where we will gather around the (now missing) flagpole for a photo\, and inspect the set of new lead-acid batteries someone has deposited there. We’ll carefully descend through the rocky cleft back to the Powerline Trail where we’ll rejoin our compatriots\, and descend to the cars. \nDirections \nGoogle and Apple Maps direction are reliable. \nFrom the east\, exit 101 at Borchard\, and drive southwest 3.4 miles to Via Ricardo\, the first right-hand turn after the hilly pass from Newbury Park into Dos Vientos. Turn right on Via Ricardo\, and drive a half mile to the trailhead. Park on the street. \nFrom the west\, exit 101 at Wendy\, and drive south 0.9 miles to Borchard. Turn right onto Borchard\, and drive 2.2 miles to Via Ricardo\, then follow directions\, above. \nFrom Port Hueneme\, Point Mugu\, and Oxnard\, drive up Potrero Road\, which turns into Lynn at the top of the canyon. Turn left onto Via Las Brisas\, then drive north for 1.4 miles. Turn right onto Borchard\, then immediately left onto Via Ricardo\, then follow instructions above. \nBoots on at 8:45\, ready to hike for a 9:00 a.m. departure! \nPlease do not leave anything of value in your car\, at this or any other trailhead. \nDISCLAIMER / RELEASE OF LIABILITY\nIMPORTANT\, PLEASE READ BELOW IN ITS ENTIRETY: \nThe hike host is a volunteer and not responsible for the group. Safety should be a priority for everyone in the group. Please treat this meet-up as hiking with a group of friends. If you become fatigued and unable to continue the hike\, it is expected you will advise the hike host of this and return to our starting point on your own. If you are able to proceed\, it is expected that you will maintain line of sight with other members of the group at all times and help to promote the group’s safety and fitness goals. \nOutdoor sports and other events we plan can be inherently dangerous and accidents may happen. By participating in any posted event\, you are taking responsibility for your own safety and well-being. The Weekday Trailblazers Meetup Group and its organizers are not trained leaders and we do not confirm the qualifications of any of its members to lead or participate in trips. All participants take full responsibility for their own actions. \nIf you choose to sign up for this or any Weekday Trailblazers Meetup event\, you are releasing the Weekday Trailblazers Meetup Group and its organizers from all liability in case of possible injuries. Your personal safety depends on your own judgment and experience. \nPlease review our guidelines. Restrictions apply for your safety and ours: \n\nDon’t show up unless you’re on the “Attending” list\nNo “Plus Ones” on this hike; please have your friends join The Weekday Trailblazers\, and register for the event.\nAll participants must be 18 or older\, or accompanied by a parent or legal guardian.\nPlan on sticking with the group\, and completing the entire hike at a reasonable pace or please find an alternative hike that better suits your hiking level.\nDogs are not invited.\nBring ample hydration.

SUMMARY:NEW Lollipop: PCT- Spruce Draw - to Lake Hughes Truck Trail - PCT
DESCRIPTION:NEW Lollipop: PCT to Spruce Draw then hiking the Leona Divide Fire Rd west to the intersection of Lake Hughes Truck Trail; We will take a snack break at the Intersection then return counter-clock wise hiking east on the PCT back to our cars on San Francisquito Cyn Rd. \nDISTANCE / GAIN:\n~ 8.5 miles Round Trip / 1732′ gain. \nRATING: Moderate +\nYou need to be in good physical condition to complete these\, due to some reasonably significant gain over a short distance (mainly near the start). \nHike duration: ~ 4 hours total. \nMeet: At the trailhead at 8:15 AM for a 8:30 AM start up the trail. \nDescription: \nThis is a great local hike on a well maintained portion of the Pacific Crest Trail (PCT) single track\, only 25 minutes from the SCV! This hike area is popular due to its remote nature and rapid access to some great views of surrounding areas including the Mohave desert\, Lancaster\, Martindale Ridge and the distant Tehachapi Mtns. \nWe start near Green Valley Ranger station using the PCT heading North. We will cross the fire road leading up to Grass Mtn\, stop briefly if it is clear to enjoy the views of the Mojave desert and Tehachapi.\nWe will stay on the PCT and continue North. This is a beautiful shady portion of the PCT that takes us to remote Spruce Draw canyon then on to the Fire Rd returning back via the PCT. \nNote: The return leg on the PCT has some loose rocks and minor washouts from the recent rains so please wear boots with good treads. \nDirections to the trail head (34.634482\, -118.390112):\nThe trailhead is where the PCT crosses San Francisquito Canyon Road\, using these numbers in Google\, or WAZE. \nLeader’s note: No restrooms at trailhead\, plenty of bushes. There is a bathroom in the gas station on corner of San Francisquito Cyn Rd. and Spunky Cyn Rd. in Green Valley. \nDirections from Copper Hill Dr\, in SCV to trail head:\nFind the light that is the intersection of San Francisquito Canyon Road and Copper Hill Dr. Reset your odometer here – the trailhead is 17.7 miles (about 25 mins.) from this light. When you arrive in Green Valley\, at Stop sign\, go straight through intersection on San Francisquito Cyn Rd. The Ranger station is on the left\, 2 minutes later. The trailhead\, where the Pacific Crest Trail (PCT) crosses San Francisquito\, is 0.2 miles beyond that – look for PCT signs and parked cars. Park on the gravel shoulder\, on either side\, near where the PCT crosses the road – this is our “trail head”. \nHike Starting Place/ Time: (34.634482\, -118.390112) \nAdventure pass: Not required. \nBRING: Hiking poles are helpful for the hills. Bring a snack and at least 2L water and 1L Gatorade/ Salt sticks; camera\, cap and sunscreen. Dress in layers as it can be windy and chilly in the shady areas. Bring plastic bags for the possibility of muddy boots and change of shoes. \nLeader: Nancy Harrison

SUMMARY:VENTURA WALKABOUT - COINCIDING WITH "THE VENTURA WINE WALK"
DESCRIPTION:PIER TO PEAK WALKABOUT IN THE DOWNTOWN VENTURA AREA! \nJOIN THE GROUP WHEN/WHEREEVER YOU CAN/WANT…\nTimes given are my best guesstimate for movement between the stated destinations\, including loitering time. This timing is delayed 30 minutes from last time and should work well\, especially for those not paying for the Wine Walk. \nSomeone in the lead group may post Messages here on where we are during the day\, but you should be able to find us following close to the published schedule. Take a look at the Map Link in this posting to see what is described below! \nHERE IS THE PROPOSED SCHEDULE: \n(1) 10:30AM: Meet at the Downtown Ventura Public (free) Parking Structure: Exit the 101 on California Street and turn north. Turn right where California Street is closed to traffic and the Parking Structure will be on your left. We’ll meet in the alleyway on the north side of the Parking Structure by California Street. Lure’s Fish House and Ventura EBikes are nearby establishments. \n(2) 10:50AM HIKE START: We’ll walk south on California Street\, jog left (east) on Harbor Blvd.\, then out onto the pier for a quick visit. \n(3) 11:40AM: Leaving the pier\, head straight north and take the Pedestrian Overpass over the 101 freeway\, then go north on S. Ash Street to Thompson Blvd. Turn left (west) on Thompson and then spend the next hour and a half at your choice(s) of Spencer Makenzie’s\, Leashless Brewing\, The Barrel House\, The Habit\, etc… \n*** PLAN TO BE BACK AT THE START BY 1:20PM!!! ***\nTiming for the next segment is somewhat critical…\nWe’ will depart for The Ventura Cross no later than 1:30PM! \n(4) 1:30PM (sharp): We’ll walk to the top of California Street\, jog right (east) on Poli Street\, then left to The Botanical Gardens Parking Lot where we’ll take the meandering dirt path up to Brakey Road. \nThere is an Admission Fee of $7 to hike up through the Botanical Gardens. If you’ve never done this\, I highly recommend it! \nALTERNATIVELY\, you can save your $7 by going left (West) on Poli from the top of California Street and taking Brakey Road up to The Ventura Cross from there. \nEither way\, at the top we’ll turn left (west) on Brakey Road and find our way to The Ventura Cross. \n(5) 2:15PM: We’ll depart The Cross\, taking Ferro Drive\, Brakey Road\, or perhaps some great dirt shortcuts that intersect Ferro Drive on the way back down to Poli Street. From Ferro Drive\, turn to the east on Poli Street then take N Palm Street down to Main Street. From Brakey Road\, take any road south to Main Street. \n(6) It will be nearly 3:00PM by now. Those who are starting (and paying for) “The Spring Wine Walk” at Winchesters can walk east on Main\, a few hundred yards away for the 3PM suggested Registration Time\, noting the actual Wine Walk starts at 4PM. Those checking in at the museum will be nearly there when we get down to Main Street. \nNOTE that you can do The Wine Walk for free but you won’t get free tastings… Follow the link below for more on this! \nTake a look at our published event for The Wine Walk:\n2023 VENTURA SPRING WINE WALK \nAnd… see our December 11\, 2021 event for a preview here:\nOUR 2021 WINTER WINE WALK EVENT

SUMMARY:Angel Vista - almost Full Moon potluck hike - Easy Intermediate
DESCRIPTION:3.0 miles\, 800′ gain\, easy-intermediate. \nLet’s enjoy the gorgeous sunset and “Pink Moon”\, the April full moon\, at the beautiful Angel Vista! \nThis hike is rated easy-intermediate because it is a continuous incline for 1.5 miles. This isn’t real steep\, but it is continuous\, and many beginner hikers have indicated this should be rated intermediate. \nThat said\, there is no reason a fit beginner cannot complete this hike. If needed\, just stop and rest along the way\, even if it’s every 50 steps. This is not a conditioning hike\, it is a social hike\, and you really can’t get lost. \nThe only junction is 200 yards before the top\, where we’ll turn right to complete the climb. \nAt the top\, there is a picnic table and 360 degree incredible views that are especially wonderful at night. We’ll have a snack-share social event at the top for 30-60 minutes before heading back the way we came. Please bring some food and drink to share\, and utensils of your item requires it. \nThe top has been known to sometimes be very cool and windy. Please bring something to put on in case it is that way at the top. \nInteresting Notes \nTree Tobacco \nThe Cahuilla Indians used the leaves interchangeably with other tobacco species in hunting rituals and as a poultice to treat swellings\, bruises\, cuts\, wounds\, boils\, sores\, inflamed throat\, and swollen glands. It does not contain nicotine. \nIt contains anabasine\, a similar compound\, which is highly toxic to humans and animals. It is more toxic than nicotine. Ingestion of the leaves can be fatal. It is being investigated for use as a biofuel. All parts of this plant are toxic. Used as an insecticide. Do not smoke. \nElderberry \nThe blue or purple berries are gathered and made into elderberry wine\, jam\, syrup\, and pies. The entire flower cluster can be dipped in batter and fried while petals can be eaten raw or made into a fragrant and tasty tea. Spit out the seeds. Elderflower water is also used in perfumes and sweets. \nMost agree that they do need to be cooked if you are going to eat more than just a few out of hand. That’s because they have a small amount of cyanide producing glycosides\, which are released upon digestion. Fully ripe black berries are not toxic and you can eat as many as you like. Boiling or baking takes care of any “toxic” issue as does drying raw berries. \nDirections:\nRosewood Trailhead\n398 Regal Oak Ct.\nThousand Oaks\, CA 91320 \nFrom the 101\nVentu Park exit\, South (toward ocean).\nRight on Lynn Road for 1000′.\nLeft on Regal Oak Ct. for 1/3 mi.\nPark on the street \nHike Distance: 3.0 miles\nGain: 800′\nDistribution: Most of the incline occurs in the first half\, which is a continuous climb.\nDifficulty: Easy Intermediate.\nShape: Out and back.\nPace: approx. 2.0 mph.\nTrail Type: Double track\, single track.\nDuration: 3.5 hours\nDogs: Yes.\nRestrooms: No\nDrinking Fountains: No.\nParking: Free along the street. \nWhat to bring\n1 liter of water for every 3 miles.\nHiking shoes/boots. SUMMARY:Fall In To the Gap - Latigo to Corral Canyon ~ Intermediate Hike
DESCRIPTION:Today we’ll hike the Backbone Trail looking for wildflowers. We’ll begin at Latigo Canyon and walk on dirt and stuff until we reach the familiar sandstone structures of Mesa Peak Motorway. Along the way\, we’ll cross Castro Crest and descend into Upper Solstice Canyon before we climb to Mesa Peak Motorway\, at the top of Corral Canyon. \nWe’re starting high\, dipping down\, then rising again from Latigo to Castro Crest for broad views of mountains and canyons. The descent from Castro Crest is the standard chaparral-blanketed fare we’re accustomed to in this area. Once on the floor of Upper Solstice\, we’ll “ford” seasonal streams and check for the charred remnants of the previous cover. The climb up to Mesa Peak Motorway becomes increasingly rocky\, leveling off for an amble over to the sandstone giants and ocean views we all love. (Poles may prove to be useful.) \nWe will return the way we came. \nTotal distance is 8.4 miles\, with 1650’ of elevation gain. \nPlease review the guidelines to participate in our hikes. Here are some highlights.\nRestrictions apply for your safety and ours:\nProof of vaccination required (if you haven’t shown it).\nDon’t show up unless you’re on the “Attending” list.\nNo “Plus Ones” on this hike.\nPlan on sticking with the group\, and completing the entire hike at a reasonable pace or please find an alternative hike that better suits your hiking level.\nNo dogs please.\nBring ample hydration. \nDirections: \nFrom the 101\, take Kanan Dune Road south for 6.8 miles. Turn left\, heading east on Latigo Canyon Road\, and drive three miles to the unmarked dirt lot on the left. Use your odometer to gauge the distance. \nFrom PCH\, drive 7.3 miles inland on Latigo Canyon Road. After passing Upper Ramirez Motorway\, turn right into the dirt pullout at the trailhead. The parking area is unmarked\, so watch your odometer. \nDISCLAIMER / RELEASE OF LIABILITY \nIMPORTANT\, PLEASE READ BELOW IN ITS ENTIRETY: \nThe hike hosts are volunteers and not responsible for the group. SUMMARY:Paradise Falls - Moonridge - Easy Intermediate
DESCRIPTION:3.3 miles\, 800′ gain\, fit beginner \nA hike to Paradise Falls is one of the most popular things to do for those visiting Simi Valley\, yet a lot of people that live nearby rarely make this fun hike or perhaps have never done it. There are several paths one can take to the falls. This one is the Moonridge loop from Mark T. \nThe waterfall is always flowing. It is fed by urban run-off\, surface water waste created by urbanization\, and feeds into a small pond. \nWe start from the tennis court lot 4 blocks E. of the main parking lot and across the road. \nWe’ll head about 100 steps north and go down and into an under-street tunnel to cross the road. Turn right out of the tunnel\, and follow this path around. \nThere are several splits of this trail\, so follow the group. The trail leads through a thick canopy to the bottom of the steps that lead to the main parking lot. We’ll regroup there. \nWe’ll continue along the Moonridge trail\, following it around\, crossing a fire road\, and left at the North Teepee trail for about 500′ to a large Teepee. We can take a few pictures\, there’s a drinking fountain\, and we can rest a moment. Then we’ll continue down to the waterfall and hang out for a short while. \nTo continue\, we’ll head partly back up and cross the back side of the waterfall along Wildwood Canyon trail. After about another 200 yards\, we’ll come to couple picnic tables on the right where we’ll share snacks and beverages. \nReturning Early\nFor those that wish to head back instead of hanging around for the entire snack share\, you are responsible for finding your own way back: \nYou can either follow the posted route and map\, or take this alternate route: left at the next junction\, a relatively steep up for 200 yds. back to the Teepee\, turn right and continue 1/2 mile until it dead-ends\, turn right. After 1/2 mile\, you reach the main parking lot. Turn right at the road for 4 blocks and cross the street to find the tennis court parking lot. \nContinuing with the group\nWe’ll continue for 1/3 mile along the Wildwood Canyon trail\, cross the bridge\, make a left\, and follow the Indian Creek trail for 1 mile until arriving back through the tunnel and back to the parking lot. \nIf you are not following the leader on the return\, you should know:\nAfter crossing the bridge and turning left\, you will come to a creek. We’ll be taking a sharp turn to the left a few feet before the second creek. It’s easy to miss and almost doesn’t even look like a trail. \nYou will see several plants of note \nPrickly Pear Cactus\nInside and fruit are edible. Remove needles and scrape to remove hairs\, cut top off\, hollow out to make water container. Burn or scrape off needles – even stones can be used if you don’t have a knife. Fruit peels easily. Eat seeds and all. Use duct tape to remove thorns from hands. \nSugar Bush\nLooks almost like Laurel Sumac. Pointy leaves\, which is one way to tell it apart from the Lemonade berry. Has fuzzy red berries in long clumps that can be used to make a lemonade like drink. Sap from the fruit can be used as a sweetener. Leaves are edible. \nDirections: \nWildwood Park\n635 W Avenida De Los Arboles\nThousand Oaks\, CA 91360 \nFrom the 118\nCA-118 west to CA-23 south\, 4.8 miles to exit 15\, Avenida de los Arboles.\nTurn right (west) on Avenida de los Arboles for 3.3 miles until 4 blocks before it ends. There will be tennis courts on the right with a parking lot. \nParking: If the lot is full\, additional lot 750′ back the way you came (ESE of tennis court lot)\, or use the neighborhood across the street. \nThe Hike\nDistance: 3.3 miles\nElevation Gain: 800′\nPace: 2.0 mph\nDifficulty: Easy Intermediate\nDogs: Yes.\nRestrooms: Yes – when we arrive at the main parking lot.\nDrinking Fountains: Yes\, at the TeePee\, almost half way through the hike.\nParking: Free.\nTrail: Double and single track\, fire road. \nWhat to Bring\n1-2 liters of water.\nSnacks and/or beverages to share\nHiking shoes preferred\, but athletic shoes will be OK.\nFlashlight or headlamp for evening hikes.\nRepellent – There can be gnats. \nFAQ\nHiking Plus Page Links\nDisclaimer / Release of Liability

SUMMARY:Kanan Dume to Castro Peak OAB (Fast Paced)
DESCRIPTION:AUGUST 2022 UPDATE: Please review the revised guidelines to participate in our hikes. Here are some highlights and a link to the guidelines: \nhttps://www.meetup.com/The-Weekday-Trailblazers/about/ \nRestrictions apply for your safety and ours:\n*Proof of vaccination required \n\nDon’t show up unless you’re on the “Attending” list\nNo “Plus Ones” on this hike\n\nOur Out and Back hike will take us on a less-traveled but quite beautiful part of the 60-mile Backbone Trail\, which runs through the Santa Monica Mountains National Recreation Area from Will Rogers State Park in the east to Point Mugu in the west. \nThe route begins at Kanan Dume Road and goes southerly a short distance\, allowing us to cross over the southernmost tunnel (Tunnel 1) above Kanan Dume Road. We then proceed easterly roughly 4 miles and up 1250 feet\, gradually winding our way up and through Latigo Canyon\, crossing Latigo Canyon Road\, and then ending at a saddle or on a bluff immediately south of Castro Peak with spectacular Pacific views. \nhttp://photos1.meetupstatic.com/photos/event/3/8/0/6/event_101654342.jpeg \nThe terrain is a mix of single and double-file trail. The majority of our out and back hike is wooded and shaded canyon trails\, offering periodic glimpses of the Pacific\, but the route eventually gives way to open hillsides and ridgelines\, and an open area over the Pacific. \nThe total distance for this hike will be approximately 7 miles with 1550 feet of elevation gain. \nNo dogs allowed on the hike. \nDirections: \nFrom the 101 – exit at the Kanan Road exit and drive south (toward the ocean) 7.8 miles\, going through two of the three tunnels on this road (which changes name to Kanan Dume Road). Turn right into the “Backbone Trail” parking area\, just before entering the third tunnel. \nFrom PCH – turn up South Kanan Dume Road. Drive 4.4 miles from PCH\, going through one tunnel\, and then turn left into the “Backbone Trail” parking area\, almost immediately after coming out of the tunnel. SUMMARY:Powerline Trail to Conejo Peak - Gentler Friendly
DESCRIPTION:THIS Thursday’s forecast is for mostly sunny weather with a high of 74° – Yay! \nBoth Laurie and I will post hikes – please only register for one (this leaves room for others to join). SUMMARY:Feel the Peace\, Love\, and Joy ~ Intermediate Hike from Wendy Trailhead
DESCRIPTION:Both Steve and I will lead hikes this Thursday. Please ONLY register for ONE hike so there is room for others to join. \nLet’s head out to the famed Peace\, Love\, Joy arch at the Danielson. This out and back hike wanders through grasslands and chaparral from the Wendy trailhead\, then climbs up Boney Mountain Trail for some fantastic views north to Port Hueneme and Oxnard and west toward the Pacific Ocean. If it’s a clear day we’ll easily be able to see Santa Cruz Island as well as the Los Padres Mountain range. If it’s really clear\, we’ll catch a glimpse of Mount Baldy in the distance to our east. \nAt the upper end we’ll visit the remnants of an old cabin and the Danielson Monument. The monument is dedicated to Richard Danielson\, the person who donated much of the land for the Santa Monica Mountains National Recreation Area (SMNMRA). The hike will start in SMNMRA and pass into Point Mugu State Park. SUMMARY:Mt. McCoy - Annual Cross Lit Hike
DESCRIPTION:3 miles\, 700′ gain\, Easy Intermediate\nEasier Option: 2.4 mi\, 530′ gain. (1343 Los Amigos Ave\, Simi Valley\, CA 93065\, or 89 La Paz Ct\, Simi Valley\, CA 93065 to save another 500′ distance). \nA special treat: The cross will be lit! The Rotary Club lights the cross for the week from Palm Sunday to Easter Sunday\, and our group has been doing this hike every year since the group started. \nWe’ll meet in the parking lot at the northeast corner of Madera and Royal\, just south of the Donut Delite\, on the east side of the Clinicas office. We’ll walk from there to the trailhead at 2 Washburn St. where it meets Los Amigos Ave. \nSunset time is 7:20p. Our hike up will be in daylight and we should arrive near sunset. \nThe Hike\nRated “Easy Intermediate” due to the 1 mile continuous incline that can get exhausting\, but a fit beginner can easily complete it. \nWe cross Madera and continue through the neighborhood for about 1500′\, to the intersection of Washburn St. and Los Amigos Ave. Then we enter a path behind the houses and proceed for 250′ to the entrance. So far\, there will have been very little elevation gain. \nFor those that want a little easier option start at this address: 1366 Los Amigos Ave\, Simi Valley\, CA 93065. \nWe’ll enter a series of switchbacks for 1.2 miles to a large cross at the top. This is a steady climb across the face of the hill\, always in full view of the neighborhood below. There is nothing wrong with slowing down while faster hikers move ahead\, or resting for a minute during this climb. \nIt may seem easy to get lost because there are many different cross-paths up the face of this hill\, but they all lead to the same place. Generally\, whenever there is a choice of “left or right”\, we take the easier and more worn path. If you happen to find yourself alone and take a wrong turn (aka steep cut)\, all paths lead up. \nAt the top by the cross\, we’ll enjoy the gorgeous 360 degree views and share beverages and/or snacks. \nEasy Option: 2.25 mi\, 650′ gain.\nJust a little easier. Park at the traihead: 4 Washburn St\, Simi Valley\, CA 93065 \nInteresting Notes\nHere are a couple plants you are sure to see on this hike: \nBlack Sage\nMultiple brown buttons going up the top of the stalk\, that may have white flowers. Green leaves. Purple or white flowers that are dark brown as they dry on the plant. Squish the leaves and smell. \nA rare and sought after Black sage honey is also made from the honey of bees that pollinate the Black sage plant. Black sage is utilized in the culinary world as an aromatic and flavorful herb. It can be used in recipes wherever traditional sage is called for\, however keep in mind that foraged Black sage has a much stronger flavor than that of traditional store bought sage. \nIts flavor goes well with winter squashes\, brown butter\, poultry\, venison\, pears\, cheese\, potatoes and other herbs such as rosemary and thyme. Use fresh in a variety of different preparations or leaves. Can be dried and stored for future use as a dried herb. Black sage was used traditionally by Native Americans known as the Chumash people to form an herbal soak for the bath to be used in the treatment of bodily pain\, specifically for the feet and lower legs. \nPurple Sage\nGrey-green leaves. Aromatic when crushed. Purple flowers. Aka\, Tobacco Sage\, with mild hallucinogenic properties when smoked. Can be used as a spice or made into a tea. Tea has medicinal affects: Antiviral\, gargle for sore throats\, reduce hay fever symptoms and other drying actions. \nDistance: 3 miles (round trip)\nElevation Gain: 700′\nDifficulty: Easy Intermediate\nDuration: 3 1/2 hours\nPace: 2.0 mph\nDogs: Yes.\nRestrooms/Drinking Fountain: Yes – at nearby places of business\nParking: Free\nTrail: Mostly single-track \nWhat to Bring\n1-2 liters of water.\nSnacks and/or beverages to share\nHiking or athletic shoes.\nFlashlight or headlamp. \nDirections\nFor those doing the regular route:\n1424 Madera Rd\, Simi Valley\, CA 93065 \nFAQ\nHiking Plus Page Links\nDisclaimer / Release of Liability

Along the trail\, we will pass many impressive stone escarpments in the Vasquez park area\, an interesting cave/ shelter near the stream area\, before finally heading through an animal corridor/ drainage tunnel under Hwy 14. When we emerge from the tunnel\, we continue South along the PCT\, passing through chaparral and open terrain\, encountering no less that 4 fault lines\, and Flowers so many Flowers. Finally taking a slight detour crossing the Santa Clara River and back tracking back up Soledad Cyn road to arrive back again at the Indian Canyon parking lot. SUMMARY:Danielson Monument - potluck hike
DESCRIPTION:6.5 miles\, 1300′ gain\, intermediate \nLet’s enjoy hiking to the Danielson Monument in the Boney Mountain Wilderness and potluck lunch! \nThis is a great way to be thankful for the beautiful nature\, our health and friendships. We’ll hike up to Danielson monument and enjoy potluck and “Peace\, Love and Joy.” \nPlease bring food and drinks to share.\nWe’ll have our typical snack-share social event at the top for 60-90 minutes before heading back the way we came. Please bring some food and drink to share. If your item requires plates or utensils (ex: rice\, macaroni salad\, etc.)\, please bring them. \nYou will see several plants of note: \nTree Tobacco\nThe Cahuilla Indians used the leaves interchangeably with other tobacco species in hunting rituals and as a poultice to treat swellings\, bruises\, cuts\, wounds\, boils\, sores\, inflamed throat\, and swollen glands. \nElderberry\nThe blue or purple berries are gathered and made into elderberry wine\, jam\, syrup\, and pies. \nHike Distance: 6.5 miles\nGain: 1300′\nDifficulty: Intermediate\nShape: Out and back.\nPace: approx. 2.0 mph.\nTrail Type: Double track\, single track.\nDuration: 5 hours\, 3 for just the hike part.\nDogs: Not allowed in the state park.\nRestrooms: No\nDrinking Fountains: No.\nParking: Free along the street. \nMeet at: Wendy Trail Head\n4128 Potrero Rd\nThousand Oaks\, CA 91361\nWhere S. Wendy Dr. ends at Potrero Rd. \nWhat to bring:\n1 liter of water for every 3 miles.\nHiking shoes/boots. Not required\, but recommended.\nFlashlight or headlamp.\nSunscreen and/or hat as needed.\nSnacks and/or beverages to share \nFAQ\nHiking Plus Page Links\nDisclaimer / Release of Liability

SUMMARY:Oak Creek Canyon to Los Padres Loop ~ Gentler Intermediate
DESCRIPTION:Oak Creek Canyon Trail is a rather special trail in Los Robles Open Space that is designed for the blind as well as the sighted. The all-access trail is shaded by a canopy of oaks\, while the loop trail spends more time in the chaparral. The trails form a U-shape that is connected by hiking a tenth of a mile on Greenmeadow Avenue.\nWe will start at Oak Creek Canyon and proceed to a connector trail a short distance until we meet a junction with Los Robles Trail East. Along this big loop\, you’ll travel through a couple of very nice oak groves\, and get some great views throughout the Los Robles (along the Los Robles Overlook/Scenic View Loop) and Los Padres trails encompassed in the Robles Open Space. There is a very short section along streets/sidewalks when we return back to the latter part of Oak Creek Canyon Trail and complete the big loop.\nThis hike will be a five-mile loop with about a 900’ elevation gain/loss. \nDirection: From the 101 freeway\, drive to the south end of Moorpark Rd\, turn right on Greenmeadow Ave.\, and go a half mile to the parking lot. \nPlease review the guidelines (link to the guidelines) to join our hikes.\nRestrictions apply for your safety and ours: \n\nProof of vaccination required.\nDon’t show up unless you’re shown on the “Attending” list.\nPlan on KEEPING UP with the group and completing the entire hike at a moderate pace\, or please find an alternative hike that better suits your hiking level.\nNo “Plus Ones” or dogs on Weekday Trailblazer hikes.\n\nDISCLAIMER/RELEASE OF LIABILITY – PLEASE READ IN ITS ENTIRETY\nThe hike host is a volunteer and not responsible for the group. Safety should be a priority for everyone in the group. Please treat this meet-up as hiking with a group of friends. If you become fatigued and unable to continue the hike\, it is expected you will advise the hike host of this and return to our starting point on your own. If you are able to proceed\, it is expected that you will maintain line of sight with other members of the group at all times and help to promote the group’s safety and fitness goals.\nOutdoor sports and other events we plan can be inherently dangerous and accidents may happen. The Weekday Trailblazers Meetup Group and its organizers are not trained leaders and we do not confirm the qualifications of any of its members to lead or participate in trips. SUMMARY:Hill & Hawk Canyons to trails with wildflower blooms - Gentler Intermediate
DESCRIPTION:This hike will be one of probably three hikes for next Tuesday. This hike will be the slowest\, although it is a gentler intermediate hike. Please only sign up for one hike next Tuesday\, so if you are a jackrabbit\, you might want to wait for Laurie or Steve to post. This figure 8 hike starts at the parking area in Hill Canyon\, we’ll cross the bridge over the runoff creek\, and stroll a mile before turning onto the Hawk Canyon Trail. The Hawk Canyon Trail connects to Western Plateau Trail and Peninsula Trail which runs back down rejoining the Western Plateau Trail to The Hawk Canyon Trail. Then\, we will hike up the hidden trail and descend back into Hill Canyon and follow it all the way back to the parking lot. We will take a few breaks along the way to wait for everyone to catch up. We’ll see lots of green hills and meadows and hopefully an abundance of wildflowers blooming. \nThis ribbon shaped hike will be about 6 miles with an elevation gain of approximately 1000 feet. \nDirections: \nFrom Moorpark Road in the Santa Rosa Valley\, drive west on Santa Rosa Road for 3.7 miles\, turn left (south) on Hill Canyon Road for about 0.6 miles to the parking lot. \nFrom the 101 Freeway in Camarillo\, take exit 52 onto Santa Rosa Road and drive northeast. After 5 miles\, turn right onto Hill Canyon Road for about 0.6 miles to the parking lot. \nPlease review the guidelines (link to the guidelines) to join our hikes.\nRestrictions apply for your safety and ours: \n\nProof of vaccination required.\nPlease do not show up unless you’re shown on the “Attending” list.\nNo dogs.\nNo “Plus Ones” Weekday Trailblazer hikes.\n\nDISCLAIMER/RELEASE OF LIABILITY – PLEASE READ IN ITS ENTIRETY\nThe hike host is a volunteer and not responsible for the group. This hike will include an extended stop for a snack and beverage share at the half way point. We will stop at junctions to make sure everybody makes any turns or chooses the correct direction at splits\, else something will be used to mark the direction\, usually a large arrow made of baking soda or some sticks. There may not always be a sweeper designated to be the last hiker. \nEach hiker is responsible for knowing their capability\, only attending events where they are able to sustain the described pace\, for keeping up with the group sufficiently enough to make the turns and not get left behind\, and for making sure the host is notified if they are going to split from the group. \nGroup separation:\nSometimes hikers wish to move significantly ahead and not wait at designated stopping points. Please let the host know. They are on their own regarding route and navigation. \nDirections (Palo Comado Canyon – Doubletree Trailhead): \nFrom I-101\nI-101\, exit Kanan Rd.\nKanan Rd. north for 2 miles.\nRight (east) on Sunnycrest Dr. for 0.6 miles.\nContinue on Doubletree Rd. for 0.l miles.\nTrailhead on the right\, park along the street. \nFrom CA-118\, CA-23\nI-118 west.\nI-23 south for 4.8 miles\, exit Avenida de Los Arboles.\nLeft (east) on Avenida del Los Arboles for 1.6 miles.\nRight (south) on N.
