SUMMARY:Ice House Saddle- return via Chapman Trail
DESCRIPTION:Distance: <9 \nRating: 7/10\, not for beginners \nPace: Intermediate/advanced \nThere won’t be a sweeper!! \nElevation 2620’ gain \nTrail Note: Wilderness permits (fee) are required here \nAccording to historian John Robinson\, the name “Icehouse Canyon” dates from the 1860s when an ice plant in the lower canyon supplied ice to valley residents. The ice business is long gone but the name is still fitting as frigid air often blows through the canyon and can even chill the hiker on an early summer morning; in the winter it can be a deep freeze. \nTestimony to the canyon’s grandeur is the significant number of visitors it draws. On a fair-weather weekend\, expect to share the trail with swarms of hikers. Even on a weekday you probably won’t have the trail to yourself. \nhttp://photos2.meetupstatic.com/photos/event/7/b/1/3/600_454291507.jpeg \nDirections: Check your local map to plan a route to the 210 freeway traveling east from Pasadena past the 57 freeway. As you enter the town of Upland\, exit at Base Line\, turn left on Base Line and take the first right on Padua Ave. Make a right on Mt. Baldy Road into the mountains towards Baldy Village. A couple miles after Baldy Village you will enter the parking lot for Ice House Canyon. The entrance to the parking lot is just before the road hairpins to the left up to the Chairlifts. Make sure you do not keep going up to the lifts. There is a little road block right there where a wonderful lil’ lady by the name a Dee Hanson sells honey\, and “National Forest Service Adventure Pass” parking permits. You will want to grab one of these permits for $5.00. Park your car in the parking lot making sure to display your pass in the windshield. \n\nPLEASE – Know your limits and abilities. Bring snacks and drink plenty of liquids when hiking. Check weather conditions and dress accordingly and be aware of your surroundings at all times. Watching out for poison oak\, snakes\, ticks\, uneven footing\, spectacular views\, beautiful fauna all while interacting with awesome (usually) fellow hikers can be extremely hazardous\, rewarding and fun. \nVHC HIKE RATING SCALE \nRating a hike is subjective\, meaning the difficulty of a hike will be in direct relation to how often you hike and the type of hike you prefer. Keep in mind that any hike can have the following: un-even hiking surfaces\, various obstructions\, water and/or water crossings or bouldering and/or rock hopping. A great hike will have all of these! \n1 – A long walk \n2 – 4 mile hike w/little elevation gain \n3 – 5 mile hike w/up to1000 ft. elevation gain \n4 – 5+ mile hike w/up to1500 ft. elevation gain (heart rate increases at times) \n5 – 7+ mile hike w/over 1500 ft. elevation gain (heart rate increasing even more at times) \n6 – 7+ mile hike w/over 2000 ft. elevation gain (at times you might be trying to remember how to perform CPR) \n7 – 5+ mile hike w/over 2000 ft. elevation gain (at times you might be muttering expletives to yourself) \n8 – 10+ mile hike w/over 3500 ft. elevation gain (at times you might be angry with the hike leader) \n9 – 10+ mile hike w/over 5000 ft. elevation gain (at times you might be thinking of reporting the hike leader to the authorities) \n10 – Use your imagination \nClass 3 Scrambling: Scrambling or un-roped climbing. You must use your hands at times to hold the terrain or find your route. This may be caused by a combination of boulders\, steepness and extreme terrain. Some Class 3 routes have ropes in place for assistance. \nDISCLAIMER / RELEASE OF LIABILITY \nIMPORTANT\, PLEASE READ BELOW IN ITS ENTIRETY: \nI am a volunteer (i.e. not liable for the group). Safety is a priority for everyone in the group. Think of this as hiking with a group of friends. \nOutdoor sports and other events we plan can be inherently dangerous and accidents may happen. SUMMARY:Big Sycamore Canyon - Wood Vista Canyon - Sand Dune Loop
DESCRIPTION:http://photos4.meetupstatic.com/photos/event/9/a/7/b/600_438459547.jpeg \nThis hike will climax with a rare and stunning ocean vista\, including almost a straight down view of white\, foamy surf and turquoise-tinted shallows. \nOur hike will begin in Big Sycamore Canyon\, the finest example of a sycamore savanna in the State Park System. Some of the gangly sycamores soar to heights of over 80 feet. \nhttp://www.venturacountytrails.org/RecentPhotos/2015-02-03PtMuguSPScouting/IMG_9933.jpg \nAfter a pleasant 3 miles we’ll turn up the Wood Vista Trail (a segment of the Backbone Trail)\, our only major ascent during the hike. \nWe’ll climb steadily for the next two miles\, making long\, looping switchbacks. As we climb higher\, we’ll get a nice view not only of Big Sycamore Canyon and Boney Mountain. \nWhen we reach the Overlook Fire Road take a break and enjoy views of La Jolla Valley. We’ll head south on the Overlook Fire Road\, which follows the ridge that divides Big Sycamore Canyon and La Jolla Canyon. Keep your eyes peeled for Anacapa Island\, visible between two hills. \nhttp://photos4.meetupstatic.com/photos/event/b/1/2/a/600_438465354.jpeg \nAfter a couple of miles on the Overlook Trail we’ll hit the Scenic trail and traverse the ridge above the Great Sand Dune to the prominence shown at top. \nhttp://photos1.meetupstatic.com/photos/event/1/5/7/5/600_438545493.jpeg \nHike is about 9.5 miles with 1100 ft gain and is rated MEDIUM+. See the Hike Rating Guide \nDirections to trailhead \nTake PCH to Sycamore Canyon Rd. Sycamore Canyon Rd is 19 miles north/west of Malibu Canyon Rd. Its 5.9 miles south/east of Las Posas (you will pass by La Jolla Canyon). \nTurn into Sycamore Canyon toward campground and go to Kiosk. Pay\, park and hang out. Parking was $12 or $14 last time I was there. Credit cards OK (but bring exact change just in case). We’ll be meeting in the main lot near kiosk There is additional pay parking on the beach side of PCH. \nSee also http://www.meetup.com/localhikers/photos/26205514/438824911/ \n==================================================== \nThe Organizers and members of Hiking With Dean are not professional leaders\, guides\, or mountaineers. SUMMARY:Rocky Peak Modified - Easy Intermediate or Fit Beginner
DESCRIPTION:4 miles\, 950′ gain\, Easy Intermediate\n2 miles\, 550′\, Fit Beginner \nThis is a modified version of the famous Rocky Peak hike. It gives those that want something easier\, a chance to climb one of the most well known trails in Simi Valley. \nIt contains beautiful sandstone formations throughout the hike and there are fantastic views of the valleys. There is really no way to get lost because there are no junctions. If one chooses\, they can turn around and return to the beginning at any point during this climb. \nThe beginning contains continuous and somewhat steep incline of about 1000 steps. It’s a fire road\, so it’s not steeper than a truck can climb. Still\, beginners will find this short climb to be exhausting. There is nothing wrong with taking short breaks and doing it slowly\, as there will be plenty of time. \nAfter 1 mile\, we’ll arrive at the Hummingbird trail and bench. This is where we’ll have a social event. Those that have had enough\, should wait for 30-45 min. and can explore the various rock formations there: at least two caves along the edge of the trail within a few hundred feet. \nAdditional Segment\nThose that want something extra will continue for 1 more mile\, and just before the final and steep ascent to the top\, there will be a junction off to the right. They’ll turn around and return to the bench. Those proceeding with this segment can do all or part of it. \nAt the bench\, we’ll share snacks and beverages\, enjoy the views\, and engage in social interaction for about a hour before returning the way we came. \nIt can get windy and cool in the evening\, so I would recommend bringing something light to put on. \nInteresting Notes: \nHere are a couple plants you are sure to see on this hike: \nCalifornia Sagebrush \nAromatic when crushed. AKA\, common sage\, coastal sage. Sunflower family. Cowboys used to ride through it and brush up against the pine-shaped leaves\, coming home with the smell on their clothes and giving rise to the nickname “Cowboy Cologne.” Not a true sage. Can be used as a cooking spice and can be made into a tea. Tear off some needles by running your hand up the stalk and smell the aroma. \nPurple Sage \nGrey-green leaves. Aromatic when crushed. Purple flowers. Aka\, Tobacco Sage\, with mild hallucinogenic properties when smoked. Can be used as a spice or made into a tea. Tea has medicinal affects: Antiviral\, gargle for sore throats\, reduce hay fever symptoms and other drying actions. In the last summer\, fall\, and winter months\, the flowers will have turned brown and the leaves we take on a greyer color. \nDirections:\nRocky Peak Trail\nSimi Valley\, CA 93065\n34.268396\, -118.636139 \nFrom the 118\nExit Rocky Peak Rd.\nTrailhead on the north side.\nPark either at the trailhead (limited parking)\, or south of the freeway along Santa Susanna Pass Rd. \nFrom the 101 @ CA-23\nNorth CA-23 for 8.4 miles.\nEast I-118 for 14 miles.\nExit 32 Rocky Peak Rd.\nTrailhead on the north side (left).\nPark either at the trailhead (limited parking)\, or south (right) of the freeway along Santa Susanna Pass Rd. \nThe Hike\nDistance: 4 miles\, easier option 2 miles.\nDuration: 3.5 hours\nElevation Gain: 950′\, easier option 550′.\nDifficulty: Easy Intermediate / Fit Beginner\nPace: 2.0 mph\nDogs: Yes.\nRestrooms: No\nDrinking Fountains: No\nParking: Free at the trailhead (limited parking\, not recommended as you can get a ticket after sunset for parking there) or across the freeway 500′.\nTrail: Fire road.\nPurpose: Social \nWhat to Bring:\n1-2 liters of water.\nSnack and Beverage Share\nHiking shoes preferred\, but athletic shoes will be OK.\nFlashlight or headlamp. \nFrequently Asked Questions\nDisclaimer / Release of Liability

If you have some place to be later in the day\, this event will not work for you.\nWe will be setting a steady pace with several breaks while staying together all the way so as not to lose anyone.\nPOLES AND HARD HATS ARE RECOMMENDED \n———————————————– DAY’S AGENDA —————————————\nSTART: We’ll start the hike by taking an old dirt road leading from Vincent Gap to the BIG HORN MINE. \nBIG HORN MINE: Named after the majestic Bighorn Sheep by Charles “Tom” Vincent while searching for the source of the gold found in the East fork of the San Gabriel River\, it is by far the largest abandoned mine in the San Gabriel Mountain range\, with a long and colorful history to match. Located deep beneath Mt. Baden Powell\, it has been estimated that all tunnels combined measure well over two miles in length. We’ll check out several tunnels and map them as we go. After checking out the mine\, on the way back to Vincent Gap\, we can take a side route to Vincent’s Cabin. \nVINCENT’S CABIN: A Civil War veteran\, Charles “Tom” Vincent\, settled and lived an isolated life near Vincent Gap. He prospected for gold and built a small cabin nearby of cedar and lupine\, which also included ditches to channel water flow from a nearby spring. \n—————————————- MEETUP LOCATIONS ————————————– \nEARLIER MEETUP LOCATION AND TIME: Woodland Hills Meetup location at 6:15am.\nIF MEETING THERE\, LET ME KNOW\, OTHERWISE I WON’T BE STOPPING THERE. \nFINAL MEETUP LOCATION AND TIME: Vincent Gap along Hwy. 2 at 8:00am. We’ll all meet here. \n———————————————– STATS ————————————————–\nDURATION: We’ll want to finish the hike and be back to the cars by 3:00 p.m. at the latest\, followed by lunch in Little Rock at the Charlie Brown’s Restaurant. \nTERRAIN: Old dirt road between 6000′ and 7000′ \nDISTANCE: 5 miles \nELEVATION RANGE: Gain of 700′ \nTHE PACE: A comfortable pace no faster than the slowest hiker. \nLEVEL: Intermediate hiker \nMY CELL NUMBER IS: 805-538-5972 \nDOGS ALLOWED: NO

SUMMARY:Hill Canyon - Hawk Lollipop - Easy Intermediate\, beginner option
DESCRIPTION:5.3 miles\, 600′ gain\, Easy-Intermediate\n2.5 miles\, 100′ gain\, Beginner \nWe start by crossing a bridge into a wooded area and continue down a relatively flat path alongside a stream. After about a mile\, we’ll come to a junction. \nFor those that want the full hike\, we’ll turn right and complete a 3 mile loop with 500′ of gain\, stopping just before the end of the loop for a social event at the picnic table on the left\, where we’ll share snacks and beverages for about 60 minutes. \nEasier Option.\nFor those that want to keep it beginner\, pass the junction and continue for 1/4 mile and no gain. That same picnic table will be on the right. \nFor the return\, we continue the loop for 1/4 mile\, then a relatively flat walk back for about a mile. \nHike Distance: 5.3 miles\, Beginner option is 2.5 miles.\nGain: 600′\, Beginner option is 100′.\nDistribution: Most of the incline is concentrated in the second quarter.\nDifficulty: Easy Intermediate/Easier option is beginner.\nShape: Lollipop.\nPace: approx. 2.0 mph.\nTrail Type: Fire road.\nTrail Variations: The first mile is mostly flat.\nAll of the trail is well groomed and not rugged.\nDuration: 3.5 hours\nDogs: Yes.\nRestrooms: Yes\, at trailhead\nDrinking Fountains: No.\nParking: Free in lot next to trail head. \nWhat to bring:\n1 liter of water for every 3 miles.\nHiking shoes/boots. Not required\, but recommended.\nFlashlight or headlamp.\nSunscreen and/or hat as needed.\nSnacks and/or beverages to share \nHosting \nRoute: The host knows the route. Click the link to see it. \nNavigation: Host memory\, enhanced by GPS navigation as needed. \nHike type: Social.\nWe won’t be hiking at a fast pace because this is a social hike\, not a conditioning hike. There is nothing wrong with stopping\, even if it means every 50 steps. \nInteresting Notes \nHere are a couple plants you are sure to see on this hike: \nWild Oats \nThe mature seed of the plant is used as a cereal grain. All oats have edible seeds\, although they are small and hard to harvest in most species. Oats are hard to tell apart from weedy relatives\, so the term “sowing wild oats” came to be used to describe unprofitable activities and destructive sexual liaisons of an unmarried young male that could result in children being born out of wedlock. \nRed Brome \nGrass like with thorny appearing tops. A sub-species of foxtail chess. Can lead to flash fires. Winter fires don’t kill the seeds. \nDirections: \nHill Canyon Trailhead\n10241 Hill Canyon Road (address is before trailhead\, continue to gravel lot on left)\nSanta Rosa Valley\, CA 93012\nCoordinates of trailhead: 34.226495\, -118.930374 \nFrom CA-118:\nCA-118 west to CA-23 south.\nExit 19 Tierra Rejada Rd.\, turn right (west) for 0.5 miles\nLeft (south) on Moorpark Rd. for 1.4 miles.\nRight on Santa Rosa Rd. for 3.7 miles.\nLeft on Hill Canyon Rd. for 0.6 miles.\nParking in gravel lot on left. \nFrom CA-101 (from Camarillo and farther west):\nExit Santa Rosa Rd. north for 4.9 miles.\nTurn right (south) on Hill Canyon Rd. for 0.6 miles.\nParking in gravel lot on left. \nFrom CA-23 and CA-101 (from Thousand Oaks):\nNorth on CA-12 for 3.1 miles.\nExit 16 Sunset Hills Blvd. and left (west) for 0.9 miles.\nLeft (west) on E. Olsen Rd. for 0.8 miles.\nRight (north) on N. Moorpark Rd. for 1.9 miles.\nContinue on Santa Rosa Rd. west for 3.7 miles.\nTurn left (south) on Hill Canyon Rd. for 0.6 miles.\nParking in gravel lot on left. \nParking can be very tight because it is also popular with bicyclists. Car pooling suggested\, because it would be sad for someone to not be able to hike because there isn’t any place to park. \nFAQ\nDisclaimer / Release of Liability

SUMMARY:Conejo Canyon - Easy Intermediate with Easy Option
DESCRIPTION:4.2 miles\, 700′ gain\, easy-intermediate.\nEasier option: 2.7 miles\, 500′ gain\, fit beginner. \nThis is a pot-luck hike. We’ll be stopping at the 3/4 point by a picnic table\, so please bring food and drink to share\, and any utensils your items might require. \nWe have had occasions where there were no utensils\, so it might be wise to at least bring your own. \nThis is usually done as a weekend hike\, but because there is no parking at the usual lot at the Hill Canyon trailhead\, this hike to the same location but from the other side\, replaces it. \nWe start at Conejo Canyons Trail Head\, 2010 Conejo Center Dr\, Thousand Oaks\, CA 91320. \nWe’ll hike downhill from the trailhead for 0.6 miles. \nFor the regular route\, we’ll turn left and continue uphill for 0.6 miles on the Western Plateau trail. We’ll regather at the top of the Peninsula Trail. \nThe trail will be rolling for the next 1 mile\, then drops 360 ft over the next 1/2 mile. At the bottom of the Western Plateau trail\, we’ll take a sharp right up Hawk Canyon. Our picnic spot is 1/4 mile up Hawk Canyon at the table under the trees. \nFor the easier option\, instead of turning left at the first junction\, we’ll turn right. After 0.6 miles\, the picnic area will be on the left. \nAfter the potluck\, we’ll continue up Hawk Canyon in our clockwise loop for 0.6 mile where the trail ends back at the Western Plateau trail. Take a left up the hill back to Conejo Center Dr. \n** If you plan on leaving before the group\, please familiarize yourself with the planned route\, which can be accessed by clicking on the below link: \nThe Hike\nDistance: 4.2 miles / 2.7 miles\nGain: 700′ / 500′\nDistribution: Well distributed.\nDifficulty: Easy Intermediate / Fit Beginner\nShape: Lollipop.\nPace: 2.0 mph.\nTrail Type: Fire road and single track.\nTrail Variations: Rolling stroll and ramp.\nDuration: 3.5 hours\nDogs: Yes.\nRestrooms: No\nDrinking Fountains: No.\nParking: Free along street. \nWhat to bring \n1 liter of water for every 3 miles.\nSnacks and/or beverages to share\nHiking shoes preferred\, but athletic shoes will be OK.\nFlashlight or headlamp.\nSunscreen and/or hat as needed.\nInsect repellent (optional). \nHosting \nRoute: The host knows the route. SUMMARY:Hike with Beach Party and Fire
DESCRIPTION:Note: GPS in the past has taken people to the incorrect location. Please read the written directions to verify. \n2.7 miles\, 650′ gain. \nA hike\, then a potluck party on the beach with a fire. Come for the hike\, the beach party\, or both! \nPlease post in the comments if you will bring a fire wood bundle as your pot luck item. \n**Firewood:**\nGC Martin. Dennis Stewart \nThis hike is on the easy end of the intermediate spectrum\, based on distance and elevation. Beginners are welcome\, but if it gets too hard\, they can always turn around and go back the way we came. Nearly all of the elevation gain is in the first half. \nThis is not a conditioning hike. It is a social hike. The event host will be moving slowly and stopping at various points to let people catch up. Those that wish to move ahead at a faster pace\, are welcome to do so if they know the route\, but are on their own regarding navigation. \n**The Hike.** 2 – 3:30p.\nWe meet at the Sycamore Canyon Trail head inside of Sycamore Canyon Campground at Point Magu State Park. This is a counter-clockwise loop hike because of the shape of the route. \nFrom the trailhead\, we head up a mostly flat trail for about a 1/2 mile. Left onto the Overlook Trail\, climbing 400′ over the next mile. It ends\, and we turn left. We follow the ridge for about 1/2 mile\, with about 200′ of loss and 100′ of gain. \nFor return\, we follow our tracks back to the scenic trail\, turn right\, and follow it down for about 3/4 mile\, again reaching Big Sycamore Canyon Trail\, and turning right back to our starting point. \n**The Beach Party.** 4:00 – 9:00p.\nWe’ll go back to our cars and gather up our things for the beach party. From the trail head\, it’s about 1/4 mile to the camp ground parking lot\, then another 1/4 mile to the beach party area across the road at Sycamore Cove Beach. There are picnic tables and fire pits\, but we must supply our own wood to burn. There is usually wood for sale in camp ground. \nThe fire pits on the beach are first come\, first serve. We have members that have volunteered to arrive early in the morning to secure a fire pit. \nPlease bring something warm to put on. It can get cool and windy near the beach\, especially as the sun drops. A chair and blanket recommended. \nSunset: 7:59p. \n*Prior beach events:*\n[10/2021](https://www.meetup.com/Hiking-Plus/events/281405307/)\n[9/2019](https://www.meetup.com/Hiking-Plus/events/263940005/)\n[6/2018](https://www.meetup.com/Hiking-Plus/events/250077800/)\n[4/2018](https://www.meetup.com/Hiking-Plus/events/247433528/) \n**Hike**\nDistance: 2.7 miles\nGain: 650\nDistribution: All the incline is in the first half.\nDifficulty: Beginner end of intermediate spectrum.\nShape: Counter-Clockwise upside-down lollipop\nPace: approx. 2.0 mph.\nTrail Type: Fire road\, double track\, and single track.\nDuration: 1.5 hours (hike)\, 4 hours (beach party)\nDogs: No.\nRestrooms: Yes\nDrinking Fountains: Yes. \nParking\, prices from 2021: Campground lot\, $14\, gates close at 10p. If the lots are full\, there is plenty of parking along the west end of PCH\, but you may have to walk 1/4 mile or so. \nParking space is limited\, so please car-pool or arrive early in case you have parking issues. The beach lot closes at sunset and rangers announce this to beach goers\, giving plenty of time to move your cars. Some may find free parking along the street when it closes\, else what you paid for the beach lot also covers the campground lot parking cost\, across the street. \nWhat to bring: 1 liter of water for every 3 miles.\nHiking shoes/boots. Mount Whitney is the highest mountain in the contiguous United States and the Sierra Nevada\, with an elevation of 14\,505 feet. This will be a ALL DAY hike. We are gonna encounter several different lakes and several different views as well as possible weather changes. We are all gonna stay together on this one so patients is a must. This will not be like our normal Meetup this will be a group effort to get to the top but its a easy trail to follow so if anyone needs to turn back that won’t be a problem however I encourage everyone to download AllTrails and the offline map as that is what we will be following. I will leave more as far as meeting times ect as we get closer to the event… \nTrail out and back\nMiles 21\nRated hard\nElevation Gain 6646 ft\nDogs not allowed \nYou will need to bring trail runners or trail boots\, hiking poles\, plenty of water\, a life straw or hydration filter\, electrolytes\, food and snacks\, your cell phone\, be prepared for possible rain and wind so both light and cooler weather clothing (wind breaker or hoodie) please download AllTrails and the offline map. \nLiability Disclaimer:\nAnd last….The Organizer\, Co Organizer\, Assistant Organizers and Event hosts in this group are not professional guides. SUMMARY:Sage Ranch Lollipop - Fit Beginner
DESCRIPTION:3 miles. 560′ gain\, fit beginner (5:30\, not 6p)\nNote the time change. This park closes at sunset\, so we try to get out by then. For this reason\, on weekdays\, I only schedule this in the summer when sunset is late. \nFree parking is limited. Carpooling recommended. \nAs of June 2. 2022\, the first part of the clockwise loop was closed\, but we found a new and cooler route with a perfect place for a snack-share\, complete with picnic table. \nWe’ll head up the ramp and begin the hike counter-clockwise. This ramp will be the only significant incline\, but is still suitable for fit beginners It is paved\, runs 1/4 mile\, and about 125′ of gain. \nAs we continue\, there will be a trail junction heading to the right and behind the rocks. For this hike\, we may or may not go up on the rocks to a secret area where the rock has been carved out. Maybe some will and the rest won’t. \nWe’ll continue on the main trail and follow it the rest of the way around. When we come to a sign that says “detour” because the path forward is closed\, we’ll take the detour. \nShortly after the detour starts\, there will be a picnic table to the right. We’ll stop there for a social event. Please bring snacks and drink to share. \nThis time of year\, there can be insects. Long pants and your preferred bug spray are recommended. \nIt is a steady climb up most of the way back\, but fit beginners can handle it. It will eventually lead us back to the top parking lot. From there\, we’ll take the asphalt path and down to our cars. \nNote that we have been scolded in the past by the ranger for being on the trail after dark here\, so we’ll try to get back to our cars by dark\, else get permission. \nThis takes us through Sage Ranch Park\, with interesting rock formations all around\, a very cool overlook onto the valley at the half way point\, and even an overlook onto part of the old Santa Suzanna nuclear test facility. \nAbout the parking \nThere are two spots to park. The first (where we will meet)\, is right at the entrance along the west edge of Black Canyon Rd. This is a free gravel lot\, but parking is limited to about 30 cars. \nIf the free lots gets filled\, continue about 500′ west up a steep incline\, where there is another lot with payment required via self-pay envelopes. If you plan on parking in this lot\, bring exact change from $5-15\, as I’m not sure of the cost. \nFirst\, we’ll walk up to the upper lot. You can wait up there if you don’t want to make the climb from the lower lot. \nThe park is officially open from sunrise to sunset. Prior postings for this hike\, had this warning: If you do park in the pay lot\, be sure you return before sunset\, else risk a ticket or being locked in by a ranger. \nInteresting Notes \nBlack Sage \nMultiple brown buttons going up the top of the stalk\, that may have white flowers. Green leaves. Purple or white flowers that are dark brown as they dry on the plant. Squish the leaves and smell. \nA rare and sought after Black sage honey is also made from the honey of bees that pollinate the Black sage plant. Black sage is utilized in the culinary world as an aromatic and flavorful herb. It can be used in recipes wherever traditional sage is called for\, however keep in mind that foraged Black sage has a much stronger flavor than that of traditional store bought sage. \nIts flavor marries well with winter squashes\, brown butter\, poultry\, venison\, pears\, cheese\, potatoes and other herbs such as rosemary and thyme. Use fresh in a variety of different preparations or leaves can be dried and stored for future use as a dried herb. Black sage was used traditionally by Native Americans known as the Chumash people to form an herbal soak for the bath to be used in the treatment of bodily pain\, specifically for the feet and lower legs. \nYerba Santa\nSaint Herb\, Holy Plant\, Mountain Balm. \nThe Spanish who came to early California were so impressed with the plant that they gave it the name Yerba Santa. \nLeaves were chewed to relieve dry mouth. Leaves were smoked or chewed to relieve asthma\, coughs\, colds\, headaches\, and stomachaches. Infusions of Yerba Santa leaves and flowers were used to treat fevers\, coughs\, colds\, stomachaches\, asthma\, rheumatism pleurisy\, chronic bronchitis\, tuberculosis\, and to purify the blood. Heated leaves were placed on the forehead to relieve headaches and other aches and sores. \nThe sticky leaves stay in place upon the skin. Mashed leaves were applied externally to sores\, cuts\, wounds\, insect bites\, and aching muscles. Mashed leaves were also used to reduce the swelling and relieve pain caused by bone fractures. The branches and leaves were burned in steam baths to treat rheumatism and hemorrhoids. Contains chemicals that are thought to loosen mucus in the chest and may increase urination. \nThe Hike \nDistance: 3 miles\nDuration: 3.5 hours\nElevation Gain: 560′\nDifficulty: Fit Beginner\nPace: 2.0 mph\nDogs: Yes.\nRestrooms: Yes\, at the upper parking lot\, which we will be walking up to at the start of this hike.\nDrinking Fountains: Yes\, at the start\, but you have to walk down into the picnic area to get to it.\nParking: Free in the gravel lot\, $? to park up the incline at the top\, cash only.\nTrail: Fire Road and rocky trail\, good condition. \nWhat to Bring:\n1-2 liters of water.\n[Snacks and/or beverages to share]((https://www.meetup.com/Hiking-Plus/messages/boards/thread/50879772)\nHiking shoes preferred\, but athletic shoes will be OK.\nFlashlight or headlamp. SUMMARY:Stage Coach - Andora Trailhead - Easy Intermediate
DESCRIPTION:3.5 miles\, 800′ gain\, easy intermediate\nNote that we start from the Andora trailhead. \nThis hike will include an extended stay at the top\, where we’ll have a snack share social event for 30-60 minutes. \nNearly the entire trail is an incline. Fit beginners can complete this hike\, but it will certainly get their blood pumping. \nThere are no super steep sections\, but much of the trail is rugged\, much like a stair climb. This is not a conditioning hike\, it’s a social hike. We’ll be stopping at various points to let people catch up and to make sure they make any turns. \nThe hike covers a portion of an old stagecoach road that linked LA with San Francisco in the 1860s. You can see holes that\, according to others\, were drilled into the rock for chains to help the stagecoaches up the steeper sections\, during which passengers had to get out of the vehicle. \nWe will begin near the intersection of Andora and Valley Circle. We’ll proceed up a rocky trail past a plaque erected in 1939 to commemorate the old stagecoach route\, then we’ll proceed to the top of the pass for a great view overlooking the valley. \nThere are a variety of ways of getting to the same place and there are many different ways of returning. Please follow the host to take the chosen route. The return route may be slightly different than the way up through a parallel path. \nHike\nDistance: 3.5 miles\nGain: 800′\nDistribution: Most of the incline is in the first half.\nDifficulty: Easy Intermediate.\nShape: Out and Back.\nPace: approx. 2.0 mph.\nTrail Type: Fire road\, double track\, single track.\nTrail Variations: Some parts of the trail is very rugged over large stones.\nDuration: 3.5 hours\nDogs: Yes.\nRestrooms: Yes.\nDrinking Fountains: No.\nParking: Park in the street. \nWhat to bring:\n1 liter of water for every 3 miles.\nHiking shoes/boots. Not required\, but recommended.\nFlashlight or headlamp.\nSunscreen and/or hat as needed. \nHosting\nRoute: The host has plotted this route but never taken it.\nNavigation: GPS navigation as needed. Several of our members are familiar with the route from this trailhead. \nHike type: Social.\nWe won’t be hiking at a fast pace because this is a social hike\, not a conditioning hike. There is nothing wrong with stopping\, even if it means every 50 steps. \nStops:\nThe host may designate stopping points to let others catch up. This hike will include a stop for a snack and beverage share at the half way point. We’ll stop at junctions to make sure everybody makes any turns or chooses the correct direction at splits\, else something will be used to mark the direction\, usually a marking made of baking soda\, or some sticks on the trail forming an arrow. There may not always be a sweeper designated to be the last hiker. \nEach hiker is responsible for knowing their capability\, only attending events where they are able to sustain the described pace\, for keeping up with the group sufficiently enough to make the turns and not get left behind\, and for making sure the host is notified if they are going to split from the group. \nGroup separation:\nSometimes hikers wish to move significantly ahead and not wait at designated stopping points. Please let the host know. They are on their own regarding route and navigation. \nDirections\nStage Coach Trail\, Andora trailhead\n9861 Andora Ave.\nChatsworth\, CA 91311\n34.249626\, -118.619625 \nFrom CA-118\nTopanga Canyon (CA-27) south\, 1.4 mi\nRight (west) on Devonshire St for .4 mi\nLeft (southwest) on Valley Circle for .6 mi\nRight (west) on Lassen for 43 ft.\nLeft (southwest) on Andora for 157 ft. \nFAQ\nDisclaimer / Release of Liability

SUMMARY:Chilao Visitor's Center to Mt. Hillyer\, looping back via Silver Moccasin trail
DESCRIPTION:Saturday August 6\, 2022 – Hike from the Chilao Visitors Center to Mt. Hillyer (6\,200′) and back by the Silver Mocassin Trail\nStart Hike: Meet at Chilao Visitor’s Center (Trailhead) at 7:45AM\, details below. \nDistance: 7.3 miles\, Round trip – Lollipop style loop hike\nGain: ~ 1\,234′ \nRating: Moderate + (i.e. not one for Beginners\, you need to be in good general condition to enjoy this hike). \nDescription:\nThis hike has some really nice views and being at a higher elevation it should be cooler. We start the hike at the Chilao Visitor Center parking lot\, a short distance from the trail head on part of the Silver Moccasin Trail surrounded by a pine and cedar forest. \nAt Horse Flats fork we turn left\, passing the Horse Flats campground before climbing on a well traveled trail up a gentle slope and a few switchbacks to reach the top of Mt. Hillyer. A century ago this was bandido country (the notorious Tiburcio Vasquez and his gang of horse thieves utilized Chilao and Horse Flats when they were not hanging out at Vasquez rocks\, near Acton). \nThe great boulders we will pass served as a fortress for the bandits and today these same boulders serve as a great location for rock climbers and make for some very cool photos. \nFrom the round top of Mt. Hillyer (6\,200′)\, we will be rewarded with nice views that the bandits probably used to their advantage. We will follow the ridge NE to the Rosenita Saddle trailhead. Here we turn right on a paved road and follow it for a bit\, turning off back towards the Horse Flats campground. At the back of the campsite we will hook-up with the Silver Moccasin Trail again heading back to the Chilao Visitor center. \nNote: The highway to the trailhead is twisty after passing Upper Tujunga on Hwy 2. If you are susceptible to carsickness\, plan accordingly. \nDirections to Chilao Visitor Center (34.326805\, -118.006125) :\nVia 14 FWY North:\nTake 14 FWY North to Exit 30 for Angeles Forest Hwy\, Stay on Angeles Forest HWY N4 for 16 miles to Upper Big Tujunga\, sharp turn to the left. Head 9 miles on Upper Big T all the way to the intersection with 2 Angeles Crest Hwy. Turn left (East) and follow 2 Hwy for 8 miles\, making a left turn into the Chilao Visitor Center (it’s just past the parking lot for Devils Canyon trail head). \nAlternative Route\, Via the 210 FWY:\nExit at Angeles Crest HWY 2 NORTH (Exit #20). Follow the 2 towards the mountains for ~ 27 miles\, making a left turn into the Chilao Visitor Center (it is just past the parking lot for Devils Canyon trail head). \nMeet your Leader: At the Chilao Visitor Center (34.326805\, -118.006125)\nPark in the Visitor’s Center parking lot at ~ 7:45AM. We will leave the lot to depart up the trail at 8:00AM SHARP. \nBring: Lots of liquids for hydrating (2L water + 1L Electrolytes like Gatorade)\, a hat\, sunscreen\, a snack and hiking poles if you have them. Good shoes with tread are a must. \nAdventure Pass: Yes\, 1/car. Available at Acton or any other Ranger Station\, the Little Tujunga Ranger station\, REI Nothridge\, Big 5 Sporting Goods ($5 a day/ $30 a year). \nDogs: OK\, if on a leash and well-behaved with other dogs / people carrying poles. If you bring your dog\, please drive yourself. \nLeader: Nancy H

SUMMARY:Angel Vista potluck hike - Easy Intermediate
DESCRIPTION:3.0 miles\, 800′ gain\, easy-intermediate. \nLet’s enjoy the gorgeous sunset and the moon at the beautiful Angel Vista! \nThis hike is rated easy-intermediate because it is a continuous incline for 1.5 miles. This isn’t real steep\, but it is continuous\, and many beginner hikers have indicated this should be rated intermediate. \nThat said\, there is no reason a fit beginner cannot complete this hike. If needed\, just stop and rest along the way\, even if it’s every 50 steps. This is not a conditioning hike\, it is a social hike\, and you really can’t get lost. \nThe only junction is 200 yards before the top\, where we’ll turn right to complete the climb. \nAt the top\, there is a picnic table and 360 degree incredible views that are especially wonderful at night. We’ll have a snack-share social event at the top for 30-60 minutes before heading back the way we came. Please bring some food and drink to share\, and utensils of your item requires it. \nThe top has been known to sometimes be very cool and windy. Please bring something to put on in case it is that way at the top. \nInteresting Notes \nTree Tobacco \nThe Cahuilla Indians used the leaves interchangeably with other tobacco species in hunting rituals and as a poultice to treat swellings\, bruises\, cuts\, wounds\, boils\, sores\, inflamed throat\, and swollen glands. It does not contain nicotine. \nIt contains anabasine\, a similar compound\, which is highly toxic to humans and animals. It is more toxic than nicotine. Ingestion of the leaves can be fatal. It is being investigated for use as a biofuel. All parts of this plant are toxic. Used as an insecticide. Do not smoke. \nElderberry \nThe blue or purple berries are gathered and made into elderberry wine\, jam\, syrup\, and pies. The entire flower cluster can be dipped in batter and fried while petals can be eaten raw or made into a fragrant and tasty tea. Spit out the seeds. Elderflower water is also used in perfumes and sweets. \nMost agree that they do need to be cooked if you are going to eat more than just a few out of hand. That’s because they have a small amount of cyanide producing glycosides\, which are released upon digestion. Fully ripe black berries are not toxic and you can eat as many as you like. Boiling or baking takes care of any “toxic” issue as does drying raw berries. \nDirections:\nRosewood Trailhead\n398 Regal Oak Ct.\nThousand Oaks\, CA 91320 \nFrom the 101\nVentu Park exit\, South (toward ocean).\nRight on Lynn Road for 1000′.\nLeft on Regal Oak Ct. for 1/3 mi.\nPark on the street \nHike Distance: 3.0 miles\nGain: 800′\nDistribution: Most of the incline occurs in the first half\, which is a continuous climb.\nDifficulty: Easy Intermediate.\nShape: Out and back.\nPace: approx. 2.0 mph.\nTrail Type: Double track\, single track.\nDuration: 3.5 hours\nDogs: Yes.\nRestrooms: No\nDrinking Fountains: No.\nParking: Free along the street. \nWhat to bring\n1 liter of water for every 3 miles.\nHiking shoes/boots. SUMMARY:Paradise Falls - Indian Creek - Fit Beginner
DESCRIPTION:2.5 mi\, 370′ gain\, fit beginner.\nEasier Option\, 2 mi\, 225′ gain\, fit beginner. \nA hike to Paradise Falls is one of the most popular things to do for those visiting Simi Valley\, yet a lot of people that live nearby rarely make this fun hike or perhaps have never done it. \nThe waterfall is flowing fully even during our drought conditions. It is fed by urban run-off\, surface water waste created by urbanization. It feeds into a small pond\, where I see people swimming and diving on occasion\, but this water is not safe or legal to swim in due to health risks and debris hidden below the surface. \nThere are several paths one can take to the falls. This is the easiest route I know from our starting location. Note that the easier option\, skips the additional walk to the falls by waiting at the social event picnic area. \nWe start from the tennis court lot 4 blocks E. of the main parking lot and across the road. We’ll head about 100 steps north and go down and into an under-street tunnel to cross the road. We’ll turn right out of the tunnel\, and when we see a split to the left\, we’ll take it. This is the Indian Creek trail\, sometimes called the Two Springs trail. \nWhen we come to a junction\, we’ll cross a wooden bridge\, then turn left. We’ll continue 1/4 mile until we reach a picnic area on the left. \nThose that want the easier option\, will wait here while the rest of the group continues for another 850′\, makes a left\, and then weaves their way down to Paradise Falls for about 150′ more. \nAfter a short look at the falls\, we’ll go back to the picnic area for a social event lasting 30-60 minutes\, and then return the way we came. \nReturning Early\nFor those that wish to head back instead of hanging around for the entire snack share\, you are responsible for finding your own way back. Continue back the way we came. \nIf you are not following the leader on the return\, you should know that after crossing the bridge and turning left\, you will come to two creeks. We’ll be taking a sharp turn to the left a few feet before the second creek. It’s easy to miss and almost doesn’t even look like a trail\, but it’s the only way one can go. \nYou will see several plants of note: \nPrickly Pear Cactus\nInside and fruit are edible. Remove needles and scrape to remove hairs\, cut top off\, hollow out to make water container. Burn or scrape off needles – even stones can be used if you don’t have a knife. Fruit peels easily. Eat seeds and all. Use duct tape to remove thorns from hands. \nSugar Bush\nLooks almost like Laurel Sumac. Pointy leaves\, which is one way to tell it apart from the Lemonade berry. Has fuzzy red berries in long clumps that can be used to make a lemonade like drink. Sap from the fruit can be used as a sweetener. Leaves are edible. Can only be found in the California hills. \nDirections\nWildwood Park\n635 W Avenida De Los Arboles\nThousand Oaks\, CA 91360 \nFrom the 118:\nCA-118 west to CA-23.\nContinue south on CA-23 to exit 15 for 4.8 miles\, Avenida de los Arboles\nTurn right (west) on Avenida de los Arboles for 3.3 miles\, 4 blocks before it ends. There will be tennis courts on the right with a parking lot. \nFrom CA-23:\nCA-23 to exit 15\, Avenida de los Arboles\nWest on Avenida de los Arboles for 3.3 miles\, 4 blocks before it ends. There will be tennis courts on the right with a parking lot. \nParking: If the lot is full\, additional lot 750′ back the way you came\, or use the neighborhood across the street. \nThe Hike\nDistance: 2.5 miles\nElevation Gain: 370′\nPace: 2.0 mph\nDifficulty: Fit Beginner\nDogs: Yes.\nRestrooms: No.\nDrinking Fountains: No.\nParking: Free.\nTrail: Double and single track\, fire road. \nWhat to Bring:\n1-2 liters of water.\nSnacks and/or beverages to share.\nHiking shoes preferred\, but athletic shoes will be OK.\nFlashlight or headlamp for evening hikes.\nRepellent – There can be gnats. \nFAQ\nDisclaimer / Release of Liability

SUMMARY:Corriganville the Back Way Double Loop Lollipop
DESCRIPTION:4 miles\, 700′ gain\, easy-intermediate\nEasy option: 2.5 miles\, 500′ gain \nParking on the south side of the CA-118 at the Rocky Peak exit. We’ll walk west along the Santa Susana Pass Rd. for about 500 feet\, and directly across from Lilac Ln\, we’ll enter a trail. We’ll move along a relatively flat section for 1/2 mile\, turn right\, and make a gradual climb until just before the wildlife tunnel. \nWe turn left and take a set of switchbacks down into Corriganville. We’ll now be in front of a picnic pavilion. \nEasy Option: Wait at the pavilion for about 35 minutes. \nThe rest of the group will continue for loop\, returning back to this same place. \nWe’ll turn right and proceed to loop through the park\, where we’ll pass an outdoor amphitheater\, then make a mild climb to the top of a hill. \nWe’ll turn right\, zig-zag down\, and then make a left to the wide center trail that leads up through the park to its only parking lot. We won’t cross to the lot yet. \nWe’ll follow the trail as it bends to the right until it eventually bends back left and heads into the parking area. We’ll then walk along the side of the lot and head back to the picnic pavilion\, where we’ll have a social event. \nAfter the event\, we’ll circle around the front of the pavilion and walk along railroad tracks for 200 yards towards the park lot. Behind a couple small shacks\, we’ll turn left and cross the tracks\, then head onto a trail and take this all the way back to Santa Susana Pass Rd. and then our cars. \nThe park officially closes at sunset\, so we’ll try to start heading back before dark. \nInteresting Notes \nHere are a couple plants you are sure to see on this hike: \nCalifornia Sagebrush \nAromatic when crushed. \nDirections\nRocky Peak Exit\, South Side of CA-118\nSimi Valley\, CA 93065\n34.268396\, -118.636139 \nFrom the 118\nExit 32 Rocky Peak Rd.\nPark on south of the freeway along Santa Susanna Pass Rd. \nFrom the 101 @ CA-23\nNorth CA-23 for 8.4 miles.\nEast I-118 for 14 miles.\nExit 32 Rocky Peak Rd.\nPark on south of the freeway along Santa Susanna Pass Rd. \nThe Hike\nDistance: 3.5 miles\nElevation Gain: 700′\nDifficulty: Easy Intermediate\nPace: 2.0 mph\nDogs: Yes.\nRestrooms: Yes\, at the picnic pavilion.\nDrinking Fountains: Yes\nParking: Free\, south side of CA-118\nTrail: Single Track\, Double Track\, and fire road.\nPurpose: Social \nWhat to Bring:\n1-2 liters of water.\nSnacks and/or beverages to share\nHiking shoes preferred\, but athletic shoes will be OK.\nFlashlight or headlamp. Take the Frazier Mountain Park Road exit going west toward Frazier Mountain. Watch carefully for the signs indicating the Frazier Mountain Road exit. (The exit is about 35 miles past Magic Mountain\, and about 3 miles past a small town called Gorman.)4. Continue on road for about 21 miles following the signs to Mt. Pinos. (After about 7 miles along Frazier Mountain road\, the name of the road will change to Cuddy Valley road. About 4 miles past this point\, the road will reach a fork. To the right is Mil Portrero Hwy\, and to the left is Mt. Pinos road. Stay to the left and continue on Mt. Pinos road for another 10 miles and you’ll reach the Mt. Pinos parking lot!5. The star party will take place in the large open parking lot at the end of the road. Park along the left hand side as you drive in! \n(borrowed from the astronomy club) Parking and Headlights: \nIf you drive up to Mt. Pinos on your own\, please try to arrive at the star party site before the sun sets so that we don’t have our headlights on as we drive in. Headlights and other bright lights ruin the night vision of the observers at the site. For this reason it is strongly recommended to use your parking lights and not to turn your headlights on when leaving the site until you are out of the parking area. There may be limited parking at the site\, so that is another reason to arrive early and ensure a space. RED LED flashlights strongly encouraged!!! \nGOOD CARPOOLING LOCATIONS ARE THE WHOLE FOODS OFF THE 405 AND SEPULVEDA IN SHERMAN OAKS AND THE McDONALDS ON ROXFORD STREET ABOUT A MILE NORTH OF WHERE THE 405 AND THE 5 FREEWAYS INTERSECT. \n🛑 BRING CHAIRS / BLANKETS / WARM CLOTHES!!! SUMMARY:Chumash - Intermediate\, with Easy option
DESCRIPTION:4 miles\, 1100′ gain\, Intermediate\nEasy Option: 1.5 miles\, 400′ gain\, Fit Beginner \nThe entire hike outbound is a steady incline. Nothing super steep\, just continuous and quite strenuous for many. There are virtually no junctions where one can get lost. \nThis is one of the more famous hikes in Simi Valley\, and for good reason. Much of the hike takes place along the edge of the mountain. The trail in spots is a bit rugged and rocky\, so a good tread on your shoes is recommended. \nIt is a part of the Chumash Natural Park that includes sandstone rock formations\, caves\, and beautiful vistas of Simi Valley. The land is owned by the Santa Monica Mountains Conservancy and the Rancho Simi Recreation & Park District. It is maintained by the Rancho Simi Trailblazers and patrolled by the Volunteer Trail Safety Service. \nWe’ll all begin the climb together. Those doing the easier option will stop after 0.7 miles and wait for about 45 minutes until the rest of us return to this spot for our social event. While waiting\, they can continue to climb any portion they want and return to this spot\, or just take in the views. \nThe rest will continue for 1.3 miles until a flat rock before heading back the same way to the social event spot. A few will probably continue another 1/2 mile until the end of the trail. \nAt the social event spot\, we’ll be rewarded with sweeping views of Simi Valley and will share snacks and beverages. \nThere is really no way to get lost on this hike\, so everybody will move along at whatever pace they want. \nHike (click this link for a pic)\nDistance: 4.0 miles or 1.5 miles\nGain: 1100′ or 400′\nDistribution: Most of the incline is concentrated in the first half.\nDifficulty: Intermediate or Fit Beginer\nShape: Out and back.\nPace: approx. 2.0 mph.\nTrail Type: Fire road\, double track\, single track.\nTrail Variations: The entire first half is incline. SUMMARY:Local Beginners/ Easy Hike - Whitney Canyon to the Cascades
DESCRIPTION:Local Beginner’s / Easy Hike!! Whitney Canyon to the cascades \nDistance: ~ 4.5 miles total\, out and back. \nGain: Almost none \nRated: Easy\, suitable for beginners and families. \nTime: About 2.5 hours \nDescription: (GPS Co-ords: 34.364404\, -118.500829 )\nA beautiful mostly flat 4.5 mile hike\, along a river bed with shady oak trees along most of the route. This is such a pleasant and easy “out and back” hike that you do not have to leave the kids or dog at home either. \nYour hike starts along a dirt road\, but after about a half mile\, becomes a single track – all the way to the “Cascades” – the site of a nice little waterfall (not flowing at this time of year). Expect to see squirrels\, deer\, woodpeckers and other birds that like this riparian habitat. We’ve also once seen a black bear! \nBring: This hike is short but you might like to bring a small snack to eat at the waterfall or along the way\, water (~1 liter)\, sun protection/hat. \nDogs: Allowed\, if on a leash and well-behaved around other dogs and people. (The MRCA fine\, if your dog is caught off-leash is $265.) \nMeeting place: \nMeet at the Whitney Canyon trailhead (by the gate\, GPS Co-ords: 34.364404\, -118.500829 ) at 7:15 AM for an 7:30AM SHARP departure down the trail. We should be back by about 9:30AM before the day heats up. \nDirections: From Valencia\, take the I-5 Freeway south ; from San Fernando Valley\, take 1-5 freeway North. Get on the SR-14 North and be ready to take the first Exit – Newhall Avenue. Take a right at the fork on the off-ramp. and when you reach the stop sign\, turn right. This will lead you quickly into the Park and Ride that is adjacent to SR-14. Parking is FREE. Park in the dirt lot to the left of the asphalt Park and Ride. \nNOTE: Park in the dirt/gravel overflow lot below to the left of the park and ride. Look for your leader by the gate in the gravel/dirt lot\, bottom right side. This is the trail head for Whitney Canyon. \nLeader: Dianne
