SUMMARY:Hollywood Sign - Hollywood Reservoir Loop Ride
DESCRIPTION:Hooray for Hollywood! There is only one legal way to bike to the Hollywood sign and that’s the way we will take. But that’s not all… \nOur all-road loop starts and ends at the Fern Dell Nature Museum in the Hollywood Hills. We’ll ride west across Hollywood\, mostly on Franklin Ave and Yucca St\, until we hook up with Nicholas Canyon Rd. \nVisit the Amazon eBike Shop \nNicholas Canyon Rd will take us to Mulholland Dr\, then across the 101 to the Hollywood Reservoir. After a loop around the reservoir we’ll ride up and through the Lake Hollywood neighborhood where we connect with Mt Lee Dr. \nMt Lee Dr takes us to Mt Lee\, the site of the Hollywood Sign. Bring a picnic lunch with items to share at the sign. \nWe return by way of Beachwood Dr\, Canyon Dr and other streets in the Hollywood Hills. This hike has a nice gradual walk until we start a gradual climb were we will start our loop. We should encounter wildflowers and mountain views. Our loop will drop down then we will continue until we start our climb back up. From there it will be all downhill and straight back to our cars. SUMMARY:Red Rock Canyon Potluck Hike
DESCRIPTION:Easy-Intermediate\, 4 miles\, 800′ gain.\nOption not to hike:\nIf for some reason you don’t want to hike but still want to come\, the social event can be driven to\, and the main group of hikers should get there about an hour after we begin: 23601 W Red Rock Rd\, Topanga\, CA 90290. It costs $5 to park there\, MasterCard/Visa accepted. \nWe’ll be passing through a beautiful canyon with huge red\, pale purple\, and tan sandstone walls. \nThe hike begins with a steady climb on a fire road for 0.75 mile. We turn right at the junction and begin heading mostly down another fire road for about 1.25 miles. \nThere will be a picnic area on the right\, where we’ll enjoy a potluck picnic. If your item requires utensils/plates/toothpicks\, etc.\, please bring them. \nThe picnic area is wooded and shaded. Consider bringing insect repellent. \nWe’ll return the way we came after about 1.5 hours. \nHosting \nRoute: The host knows the route. SUMMARY:Ray Miller Trail in La Jolla Canyon ~ Gentler Intermediate
DESCRIPTION:I pre-hiked the trail this morning and it is absolutely stunning with wildflowers beside the awesome blend of ocean and mountain views in Malibu’s La Jolla Canyon. The trail follows the canyon eastward\, away from the ocean. Then\, it quickly brings you back toward the ocean at a gradual incline. There’s a great lookout spot where it gives you a breathtaking view of the Pacific Coast Highway against the backdrop of the Pacific Ocean\, with sweeping views toward Mugu Rock on the west and Sycamore Cove on the east. After another peak\, you’ll start a slight decline that brings you to the fire road where we will turn around. Along the way\, we’ll be treated to magnificent sweeping views of La Jolla and Big Sycamore Canyons\, and of course\, the largest ocean in the world. On a clear day\, the Channel Islands are easily within sight.\nThis is a 5-6 mile out and back hike with an elevation gain/loss of about 1100’. \nDirections: \nFrom Los Angeles\, take the Pacific Coast Highway (PCH) north\, 22 miles from Malibu Canyon Rd. Across the street from Thornhill Broome Beach is the entrance to La Jolla Canyon. It is very clearly marked. Turn right. \nFrom Ventura\, take PCH eastward\, and turn left 4 miles after Las Posas Road. \nHeads up: There is a parking fee in the lot (or free with state parking pass). SUMMARY:INTERMEDIATE hike: Creek Crossings/Waterfall/Wildflowers on Upper Sycamore
DESCRIPTION:One of three hikes posted this Tuesday – please only sign up for one! And if you can’t make it\, please cancel as early as possible so waitlisted folks can get notice and attend. \nNote we will be crossing water (hopefully) up to a dozen times. I strongly recommend waterproof boots and trekking poles. Additionally\, poison oak is abundant in parts of the trail\, so wear pants and long sleeves\, or beware! \nSteve’s write-up from 4 years ago still works! (although I can’t attest to the amphibians facts…..) After the rains over the past couple of months\, there’s plenty of water flowing down the mountainside. Let’s go enjoy the sights and sounds of the water\, and the newly hatched frogs and other amphibians https://www.nps.gov/samo/learn/nature/amphibians.htm. \nThis hike will start at the Rancho Sierra Vista parking lot\, proceed down the asphalt to the bridge\, then up the Upper Sycamore Canyon trail (including a dozen shallow creek crossings – maybe fewer as it’s drying fast) to its junction with Danielson Fire Road. We’ll continue up to the waterfall (one more creek crossing)\, then continue up to the “Peace\, Love\, Joy” memorial at the top of the stream (another creek crossing) that feeds it. Once back down to the big oaks\, we’ll proceed up the dirt fire road enjoying amazing wildflowers\, crossing the meadow diagonally to Satwiwa\, and back to the cars. \nTotal distance is 7 miles or so with roughly 1300 or so feet gain. \nBoots on at 8:45\, ready to hike for a 9:00 a.m. departure!\nPlease do not leave anything of value in your car\, at this or any other trailhead. \nLunch at 3 Amigos. \nDirections: From the east\, exit 101 at Lynn\, and drive southwest 5.5 miles to the turn-off just beyond the “National / State Parks” sign. This hike will go from the beach up to the picnic table on the fire road\, approximately 5.5 miles. We will hike a little slower than the other hikes. If you want to go faster\, join one of the other hikes. Most of the hike is exposed\, but hopefully we will have some fog. Bring sunscreen. \nWe will meet in the Day Use parking lot at Sycamore Canyon Campground and start off along the main Sycamore Canyon and turn up to the fire road where we will climb up to the picnic table. If you want to turn left at the picnic table and go up to where the Ray Miller trail meets the fire road you can do that and then turn around. We will follow the fire road down to the parking lot. \nDirections: \nWe will be meeting at the Sycamore Canyon Campground and day use parking area on Pacific Coast hwy. This trailhead and parking area is a few miles south from the La Jolla Canyon Parking area where we go to hike the Ray Miller Trail. \nParking is available in the campground for $12 (or free with a State Parking Permit\, the 2022 Parking Permit is still good through 2023). There we make a left and take a relatively flat section and hike for about 3/4 mile. We’ll come to the same tar pits as the Tapo Canyon tar pit hike\, and then continue for another 300 feet to a fire road. \nWe’ll turn right and work our way up the fire road for about 1/2 mile\, and make a right at the split. Then it’s a steady climb for a mile to a flat spot on the top of the hill. We’ll have a social event there 30-60 minutes. Please bring food and drink to share. \nWe’ll continue straight and down for 1/4 mile\, and turn left at the junction. We then proceed easterly roughly 4 miles and up 1250 feet\, gradually winding our way up and through Latigo Canyon\, crossing Latigo Canyon Road\, and then ending at a saddle or on a bluff immediately south of Castro Peak with spectacular Pacific views. \nhttp://photos1.meetupstatic.com/photos/event/3/8/0/6/event_101654342.jpeg \nThe terrain is a mix of single and double-file trail. SUMMARY:Hunt for California Poppies and Trail Exploration ~ Gentler Friendly
DESCRIPTION:A few years ago\, Weekday Trailblazer members helped build a trail that extends north from the Westlake Village YMCA up into the hills west of Lindero Canyon Road. We will hike both the Bowfield Trail and Wishbone Trail on this outing. \nThis route is about 5 miles with an elevation gain of about 1050’. \nI pre-hiked the route on Saturday and the poppies were abundant. There are a couple of short sections of the trail that are a bit overgrown so you might think about wearing long pants if you are sensitive to overgrowth. \nDIRECTIONS: Find the trailhead by exiting 101 at Lindero Canyon\, and go north to Thousand Oaks Boulevard. Turn left\, and immediately turn slightly right\, and uphill\, to the new park high above the Boulevard. At the top\, turn left\, and drive to the far left (west) end of the ball fields. \nThere are restrooms and water fountains near the trailhead and the ball fields. SUMMARY:Rosewood Trail to Angel Vista ~ Gentler hike
DESCRIPTION:This is a second hike for Thursday since the only hike posted is full. We will start near the beginning of Regal Oak Ct. on the lower Rosewood Trail\, a dirt trail heading up a shaded ravine at the base of the mountain and continue to the usual Rosewood trail. We will hike to the top of Rosewood trail where there is a picnic table. Since this is an out and back\, you can take your time or speed it up. SUMMARY:Chumash - Intermediate\, with Easy option
DESCRIPTION:4 miles\, 1100′ gain\, Intermediate\nEasy Option: 1.5 miles\, 400′ gain\, Fit Beginner \nThe entire hike outbound is a steady incline. Nothing super steep\, just continuous and quite strenuous for many. There are virtually no junctions where one can get lost. \nThis is one of the more famous hikes in Simi Valley\, and for good reason. Much of the hike takes place along the edge of the mountain. The trail in spots is a bit rugged and rocky\, so a good tread on your shoes is recommended. \nIt is a part of the Chumash Natural Park that includes sandstone rock formations\, caves\, and beautiful vistas of Simi Valley. The land is owned by the Santa Monica Mountains Conservancy and the Rancho Simi Recreation & Park District. It is maintained by the Rancho Simi Trailblazers and patrolled by the Volunteer Trail Safety Service. \nWe’ll all begin the climb together. Those doing the easier option will stop after 0.7 miles and wait for about 45 minutes until the rest of us return to this spot for our social event. While waiting\, they can continue to climb any portion they want and return to this spot\, or just take in the views. \nThe rest will continue for 1.3 miles until a flat rock before heading back the same way to the social event spot. This is from the daisy family\, and it is typically used as an ornamental plant. \nMediterranean Mustard / Black Mustard\nMediterranean mustard seeds are yellow or white\, while Black mustard seeds are brown or black. The flowers look the same. \nFlowers\, leaves (mustard greens)\, and roots are edible. Can be used as a spice. Grind seeds and mix with water and vinegar to make prepared mustard. This is often a very abundant noxious weed (has been designated by an agricultural authority as one that is injurious to agricultural or horticultural crops\, natural habitats or ecosystems\, or humans or livestock.). Mugu State Park (Sycamore Canyon) have a lot of ruts to fill and brush to cut back. \nHow does free camping at the Danielson Ranch in Point Mugu State Park\, a barbecue dinner\, coffee & bagels in the mornings and the chance to win one of a few dozen thank-you drawing prizes – in exchange for some much needed work on our trails sound? \nYou can come and help for the weekend or for a day! For the 40th year\, trail users are gathering in April to work on the trails we love. In partnership with State Parks and the National Park Service\, we have trail crew leaders from the Santa Monica Mountains Trails Council\, the Sierra Club Task Force and Concerned Off-Road Bicyclist Association to teach you the basics of trail work and then guide you as we work on several different trails in the park. Choices for the level of work you want to do range from easy to very difficult. We welcome all ages and this is a great opportunity for families and outdoor groups. There are 400 flights of condors over this area every day. They love the shiny glass…they eat it and the feed glass to their chicks. Both can die from ingesting the glass. Needless to say\, as this stuff is not digestible\, this can kill them. \nIt is Easy work….bring a heavy plastic bag (like a grocery bag) to put the glass in. Wear garden gloves. Bring a low to the ground chair to sit in while you pick up the glass. Thank you for helping the condors survive. \nDianne will take away your bags of broken glass to recyle them. \nMeeting Spot/ Time: (34.535297\, -118.52569 GPS – put this into Google maps)\nOn San Francisquito Cyn Road\, at the lower Parking area\, near Power House # 2. SUMMARY:The Pentachaeta Loop
DESCRIPTION:This one is another HWD original! I put this one together back in 2009 after exploring some Westlake Village use trails. With the combination of use trails\, some minor rock scrambling and views of two local lakes\, the result is probably the best hike in Westlake Village. \nThe Pentachaeta Trail\, the main feature of Triunfo Creek Park\, is named after the Pentachaeta lyonii\, a federally-listed endangered flower found in the park. The yellow\, daisy-like flower is found only in Southern California\, and blooms between April and June. \nWe will join each end of the Pentachaeta Trail with the ridgeline that divides Triunfo and Lobo Canyons to make a 5.5-mile loop. Along the way we will have views of the Las Virgenes Reservoir and Westlake Reservoir. We may do some peakbagging too! There is a total ascent of about 1\,400 ft with 700′ of it in the first 1.5 miles\, some of it rocky. A trekking pole (for a couple of downhill sections) and sturdy hiking boots recommended. \nHike is rated DIFFICULT due to terrain. See the HWD Hike Rating Guide \nDirections:\nFrom the 101 Freeway exit Lindero Canyon Rd and turn south. At the end of Lindero\, turn left onto Triunfo Canyon Rd. Park on street. Trailhead is on the right\, across from entrance to Oak Forest Mobile Home Park. \nImportant \nTrail statistics are approximate. For safety purposes always assume they are underestimated. But don’t be disappointed if they are overestimated. \nBring more water and snacks than you think you’ll need. Trail descriptions are based on previous hikes. Current conditions are unknown until arrival. Expect the unexpected and plan accordingly. \nThe Organizers and members of Hiking With Dean are not professional leaders\, guides\, or mountaineers. We will be meeting at Rocky Peak Trail then carpooling to Tapo Canyon Trail to start our hike. Both myself and John (my husband) will carpool people over to Tapo Canyon Trail or you can park at the Tapo Canyon trail. Please read the written directions to verify. \n2.7 miles\, 650′ gain\, Easy-Intermediate. \nA hike\, then a potluck party on the beach with a fire.\nCome for the hike\, the beach party\, or both! \nPlease post in the comments if you will bring a fire wood bundle as your pot luck item. \nFirewood:\nDylan\, \nThe Hike. 2 – 3:30p.\nThis hike is on the easy end of the intermediate spectrum. Beginners are welcome\, but if it gets too hard\, they can always turn around and go back the way we came. Nearly all of the elevation gain is in the first half. \nThis is a social hike. The event host will be moving slowly and stopping at various points to let people catch up. Those that wish to move ahead at a faster pace\, are welcome to do so if they know the route\, but are on their own regarding navigation. \nWe meet at the Sycamore Canyon Trail head inside of Sycamore Canyon Campground at Point Mugu State Park. This is a counter-clockwise loop hike because of the shape of the route. \nFrom the trailhead\, we head up a mostly flat trail for about a 1/2 mile. Left onto the Overlook Trail\, climbing 400′ over the next mile. It ends\, and we turn left. We follow the ridge for about 1/2 mile\, with about 200′ of loss and 100′ of gain. \nFor return\, we follow our tracks back to the scenic trail\, turn right\, and follow it down for about 3/4 mile\, again reaching Big Sycamore Canyon Trail\, and turning right back to our starting point. \nThe Beach Party. 4:00 – 9:00p.\nWe’ll go back to our cars and gather up our things for the beach party. From the trail head\, it’s about 1/4 mile to the camp ground parking lot\, then another 1/4 mile to the beach party area across the road at Sycamore Cove Beach. There are picnic tables and fire pits\, but we must supply our own wood to burn. There is usually wood for sale at the camp ground across the street. \nIf your pot luck item requires utensils\, please bring them. \nThe fire pits on the beach are first come\, first serve. We have members that have volunteered to arrive early in the morning to secure a fire pit. \nPlease bring something warm to put on. It can get cool and windy near the beach\, especially as the sun drops. DESCRIPTION:The hike we will do starts from the parking lot across from the Ortega Oaks Candy Store. It will be 6.8 miles (total) with 1200 ft. of elevation gain. We will take the Bear Canyon Loop Trail to the 4 Corners trail junction. We will take the Bear Ridge Trail back and do a lollipop look back to Bear Canyon Loop Trail and back to the parking lot. \nFor parking\, this hike requires an Adventure Pass. You can purchase a day pass for $5 or an annual pass for $30. DESCRIPTION:This hike will be about 5.4 miles total with 820 ft. of elevation gain. \nWe are starting at the parking lot at the Wahoo’s parking lot. We will take Live Oak Trail. This turns into Serrano Road which will take us to Serrano Cow Trail. At this part of the trail\, we usually see a ton of deer\, so cross your fingers! We will get on Sleepy Hollow Trail. This will take us up to Santiago Ranch Road to Cactus Hill. We will take a short break at Four Corners. Then we will come down Whiting Road. SUMMARY:Hawk Canyon lollipop - Pot Luck hike
DESCRIPTION:4.2 miles\, 700′ gain\, easy-intermediate.\nEasier option: 2.7 miles\, 500′ gain\, fit beginner. \nThis is a pot-luck hike. We’ll be stopping at the 3/4 point by a picnic table\, so please bring food and drink to share\, and any utensils your items might require. \nWe have had occasions where there were no utensils\, so it might be wise to at least bring your own. \nWe start at Conejo Canyons Trail Head\, 2010 Conejo Center Dr\, Thousand Oaks\, CA 91320. \nWe’ll hike downhill from the trailhead for 0.6 miles. \nFor the regular route\, we’ll turn left and continue uphill for 0.6 miles on the Western Plateau trail and follow the fire road around to the right at the top\, then mostly flat for about a mile\, then dropping for another 1/2 mile. \nAt the bottom and when coming to a junction\, turn right onto Hawk Canyon. Our picnic spot is 1/4 mile up Hawk Canyon at the table under the trees. \nFor the easier option\, instead of turning left at the first junction\, we’ll turn right. After 0.6 miles\, the picnic area will be on the left. \nAfter the potluck\, we’ll continue up Hawk Canyon in our clockwise loop for 0.6 mile where the trail ends back at the Western Plateau trail. SUMMARY:Castillo Trail to Wildwood Park ~ Gentler Intermediate
DESCRIPTION:This hike starts at Castillo Trail to Wildwood Park. Currently\, it’s spectacular with an abundance of mustard greens\, wildflowers and California poppies in addition to bountiful water in the waterfalls and creeks. \nWildwood Park in Thousand Oaks is one of the most versatile local parks with 27 miles of trails skittering through this area\, which includes Wildwood’s archetypal western look that served as the set for The Rifleman\, Gunsmoke\, and Wagon Train back in the day\, as well as the movie Spartacus. \nWe hike various trails with a long creek\, crossing streams and bridges\, Indian caves\, volcanic rock cliffs and waterfalls passing through desert\, meadow\, and woodland environments at various points along the way. \nWe’ll hike over 5-6 miles with approximately 1000’ of elevation gain/loss. \nDirections: \nFrom the 101 in Thousand Oaks\, turn north on Lynn Road and continue to Avenida De Los Arboles\, then turn left. SUMMARY:Stage Coach - Andora Trailhead - Easy Intermediate
DESCRIPTION:3.5 miles\, 800′ gain\, easy intermediate\nNote that we start from the Andora trailhead. \nThis hike will include an extended stay at the top\, where we’ll have a snack share social event for 30-60 minutes. \nNearly the entire trail is an incline. Fit beginners can complete this hike\, but it will certainly get their blood pumping. \nThere are no super steep sections\, but much of the trail is rugged\, much like a stair climb. This is not a conditioning hike\, it’s a social hike. We’ll be stopping at various points to let people catch up and to make sure they make any turns. \nThe hike covers a portion of an old stagecoach road that linked LA with San Francisco in the 1860s. You can see holes that\, according to others\, were drilled into the rock for chains to help the stagecoaches up the steeper sections\, during which passengers had to get out of the vehicle. \nWe will begin near the intersection of Andora and Valley Circle. We’ll proceed up a rocky trail past a plaque erected in 1939 to commemorate the old stagecoach route\, then we’ll proceed to the top of the pass for a great view overlooking the valley. There\, we’ll have a social event lasting 30-90 minutes\, sharing snacks and beverages. \nThere are a variety of ways of getting to the same place and there are many different ways of returning. Please follow the host to take the chosen route. The return route may be slightly different than the way up through a parallel path. \nThe Hike\nDistance: 3.5 miles\nGain: 800′\nDistribution: Most of the incline is in the first half.\nDifficulty: Easy Intermediate.\nShape: Out and Back.\nPace: approx. 2.0 mph.\nTrail Type: Fire road\, double track\, single track.\nTrail Variations: Some parts of the trail is very rugged over large stones.\nDuration: 3.5 hours\nDogs: Yes.\nRestrooms: Yes.\nDrinking Fountains: No.\nParking: Park in the street. \nWhat to bring:\n1 liter of water for every 3 miles.\nHiking shoes/boots. Not required\, but recommended.\nFlashlight or headlamp.\nSunscreen and/or hat as needed. \nHosting\nRoute: The host has plotted this route but never taken it.\nNavigation: GPS navigation as needed. Several of our members are familiar with the route from this trailhead. \nHike type: Social.\nWe won’t be hiking at a fast pace because this is a social hike\, not a conditioning hike. There is nothing wrong with stopping\, even if it means every 50 steps. \nStops:\nThe host may designate stopping points to let others catch up. This hike will include a stop for a snack and beverage share at the half way point. We’ll stop at junctions to make sure everybody makes any turns or chooses the correct direction at splits\, else something will be used to mark the direction\, usually a marking made of baking soda\, or some sticks on the trail forming an arrow. There may not always be a sweeper designated to be the last hiker. \nEach hiker is responsible for knowing their capability\, only attending events where they are able to sustain the described pace\, for keeping up with the group sufficiently enough to make the turns and not get left behind\, and for making sure the host is notified if they are going to split from the group. \nGroup separation:\nSometimes hikers wish to move significantly ahead and not wait at designated stopping points. Everest. \nSilvia Vasquez-Lavado \n“The Mother of the World\,” as it’s known in Nepal\, allows few to reach her summit\, but Silvia didn’t go alone. She gathered a group of young female survivors and led them to base camp alongside her. It was never easy. At times hair-raising\, nerve-racking\, and always challenging\, Silvia remembers the acute anxiety of leading a group of novice climbers to Everest’s base\, all the while coping with her own nerves of summiting.
