SUMMARY:Ray Miller Trail hike ~ Gentler Intermediate
DESCRIPTION:The trail is an awesome blend of ocean and mountain views in Malibu’s La Jolla Canyon. We will start from the trailhead which follows the canyon eastward\, away from the ocean. Then\, it quickly brings you back toward the ocean at a gradual incline. There’s a great lookout spot where it gives you a breathtaking view of the Pacific Coast Highway against the backdrop of the Pacific Ocean\, with sweeping views toward Mugu Rock on the west and Sycamore Cove on the east. After another peak\, you’ll start a slight decline that brings you to the fire road where we will turn around. Along the way\, we’ll be treated to magnificent sweeping views of La Jolla and Big Sycamore Canyons\, and of course\, the largest ocean in the world. On a clear day\, the Channel Islands are easily within sight\, although the marine layer has been pretty prominent this summer.\nThis is a 5-6 mile out and back hike with an elevation gain/loss of about 1000’. \nDirections: \nFrom Los Angeles\, take the Pacific Coast Highway (PCH) north\, 22 miles from Malibu Canyon Rd. Across the street from Thornhill Broome Beach is the entrance to La Jolla Canyon. It is very clearly marked. Turn right. \nFrom Ventura\, take PCH eastward\, and turn left 4 miles after Las Posas Road into La Jolla Canyon. \nHeads up: There is a parking fee in the lot (or free with state parking pass). SUMMARY:Castillo Trail to Wildwood Park ~ Gentler Intermediate
DESCRIPTION:This hike starts at Castillo Trail to Wildwood Park. In the spring\, it’s spectacular with an abundance of mustard greens\, wildflowers and California poppies in addition to bountiful water in the waterfalls and creeks. \nWildwood Park in Thousand Oaks is one of the most versatile local parks with 27 miles of trails skittering through this area\, which includes Wildwood’s archetypal western look that served as the set for The Rifleman\, Gunsmoke\, and Wagon Train back in the day\, as well as the movie Spartacus. \nWe hike various trails with a long creek\, crossing streams and bridges\, Indian caves\, volcanic rock cliffs and waterfalls passing through desert\, meadow\, and woodland environments at various points along the way. \nWe’ll hike over 5-6 miles with approximately 1000’ of elevation gain/loss. \nDirections: \nFrom the 101 in Thousand Oaks\, turn north on Lynn Road and continue to Avenida De Los Arboles\, then turn left. Continue for about a half mile to Velarde Dr.( next to Wildwood Elementary School) and turn left and then turn left again at Castillo Circle. \nFrom the 118\, travel west to the 23\, exit at Avenida De Los Arboles and turn right. SUMMARY:Oak Creek Canyon to Robles West In/Out ~ Gentler Intermediate
DESCRIPTION:Oak Creek Canyon Trail is a rather special trail in Los Robles Open Space that is designed for the blind as well as the sighted. The all-access trail is shaded by a canopy of oaks\, while the loop trail spends more time in the chaparral.\nWe will start at Oak Creek Canyon and proceed to a connector trail a short distance until we meet a junction with Los Robles Trail West (AKA “Space Mountain”). “Space Mountain” gets its name from the switchbacks. You’ll travel through a couple of very nice oak groves\, and get some great views throughout in the Robles Open Space. Then\, we will turn around right before a steep downhill section with sharp switchbacks (prior to where the trail crosses a private road) and head back to our cars. \nThis hike will be about 5-6 miles In/Out with approximately 1000’ elevation gain/loss. \nDirection: From the 101 freeway\, drive to the south end of Moorpark Rd\, turn right on Greenmeadow Ave.\, and go a half mile to the parking lot. \nPLEASE READ BELOW IN ITS ENTIRETY

DESCRIPTION:DESCRIPTION: This 5-mile out-and-back hike isn’t a walk in the park. It is located in the Angeles National Forest. It’s a steep climb that zigzags between paved roads and dirt trails\, keeping your legs (and your sense of adventure) on their toes. Along the way\, you’ll enjoy beautiful views\, interesting rock formations\, and a mix of sun and shade that can change the temperature and wind exposure in minutes. \nWe’ll start at Mount Disappointment\, take in the views\, and then continue to San Gabriel Peak for a snack break while soaking up even more incredible scenery. \nSteep\, scenic\, and full of surprises — this hike is proof that even “disappointment” can lead to spectacular views! \nDETAILS:\n· Hike Organizer(s): Michele E.\n· Meet: Trailhead near small parking lot at 7:15 am\,\ndeparture at 7:30 am sharp (Mar 21).\n· Distance: Approximately 5.0 miles.\n· Elevation gain: Approximately 1604 feet.\n· Time: Approximately 3.5 hours hiking including a snack break.\n· Conditioning: You need to be in generally good physical condition.\n· Dogs: Dogs are allowed.\n· Restrooms: None closest one is at Redbox)\n· Adventure Pass: Required. \nIMPORTANT NOTES: We’ll hike at a slower pace and ask everyone to stay with the group for a friendly and safe outing. Wildwood’s archetypal western look served as the set for The Rifleman\, Gunsmoke\, and Wagon Train back in the day\, as well as the movie Spartacus. Currently\, it’s very beautiful with an abundance of wildflowers and California poppies in addition to powerful waterfalls. \nIt will start at Moonridge Trail and pass through various trails with bridges\, waterfalls\, crossing streams and tree canopies over approximately 5-6 miles with about a 1000’ elevation gain/loss. \nDirections:\nFrom the 101 in Thousand Oaks\, turn north on Lynn Road and continue 2.6 miles to Avenida De Los Arboles\, then turn left. Continue for about a mile to the end and turn into the Wildwood parking lot on the left. \nFrom the 118\, travel west to the 23\, exit at Avenida De Los Arboles and turn right. Drive further than you remember having to drive to this trailhead (10 or 15 minutes). DESCRIPTION:Forecast for this trail area is cool and pleasant\, (middle 60s°F to low 70s°F between 8:00-12:00) with light to modest breeze rather than strong wind. \nHarmon Canyon Preserve\, established in 2020\, includes 2\,123 acres of ridgelines and canyons that feature diverse coastal sage scrub and coast live oak woodland habitats\, ephemeral stream crossings with riparian scrub systems\, and breathtaking views of our local coastline\, the Santa Monica Mountains\, and Channel Islands National Park. This spectacular preserve is the largest permanently protected open space in the Ventura area with public access\, offering miles of trails for pedestrians and responsible non-electric bicyclists. Leashed dogs are allowed in the lower preserve. SUMMARY:Western Plateau - Hawk Canyon - Mt. Elliot
DESCRIPTION:Meet at the Conejo Canyons trailhead next to the Thousand Oaks Recycling Center on Conejo Center Drive\, near the end of Rancho Conejo. We’ll walk down the fire road to Hawk Canyon and then we will take Hawk Canyon to Five Points. From Five Points\, we will take the Western Plateau trail up to intersection with the Outlaw Loop trail. We will take the Outlaw Loop East trail to the base of Mt. Elliot and then take the Outlaw West trail back to the Western Plateau trail back to the car. \nThe total distance of this lollipop hike is about 6 miles with approximately 1100′ gain. Some of the sections are rocky; trekking poles may be advisable. \nOn this hike\, you’ll see the Conejo Airfield (honest!)\, Mt. Rex’s backside\, at least two wrecked cars\, lots of fennel. SUMMARY:Rincon to Carpinteria State Beach on the Bluffs Trails
DESCRIPTION:This walkabout (on trail and sand) will take us from the Rincon parking area to the top of the bluffs. About 1/2 mile in we will cross the train tracks to access the Bluffs trail. The Bluffs trail hugs the coastline all the way to Carpinteria State Beach. Along the way we will pass through the Carpinteria Bluffs Nature Preserve\, skirt the seal sanctuary (below)\, and wander by the famous tar pits. If the tide tables are in our favor\, we will be able to walk on the hard sand along the campground stretch of the hike. If not\, we can walk through the campgrounds. \nHopefully\, the temperature will stay at a reasonable number. There will be the sound of the ocean waves and probably a nice breeze for the entire hike. See photos below. \nThis hike clocks in at around 6 3/4 miles with about 250′ of elevation. If it gets too hot\, we can always cut it short. \nIf you are coming from above the grade\, see if you can carpool. DESCRIPTION:We really enjoyed our last ride in Sycamore Canyon and to make it a better event we talked about bringing a lunch along for a picnic at the beach as well as jumping in the ocean to cool off since the temperature along the coast will be 80 degrees. So bring a lunch and swim wear for this one. \nMEETUP LOCATION and time: We’ll all meet at 9:30am in Rancho Sierra Vista/Satwiwa main parking lot near the restrooms. \nRESTROOMS: At the beginning\, during and end of ride. \nDISTANCE: 19 miles \nELEVATION GAIN: 1400′ \nROUTE \nTHE PACE: No faster than the slowest in the group \nDURATION: 4+ hours \nLEVEL: Experienced mountain E-biker and above \nTERRAIN: Paved road and dirt roads \nPICNIC: After reaching the ocean we’ll cool off in it before having our picnic there. \nMY CELL # IS: 805-358-5972

This will be a 6 mile salt water taffy hike with approximately 1000 feet of elevation gain. We start at the trailhead at the back parking lot of Triunfo Park and go up to the Los Robles Trail. We then loop around counter-clockwise by way of the White Horse Canyon Trail\, across the ridge\, and back down into the Triunfo Trail. SUMMARY:Sherwood Forest/Los Robles Scenic Loop - Gentler but NOT a beginner hike
DESCRIPTION:This week we’ll hike about 5 miles with 1000’ of total elevation gain\, spread out nicely\, with a little bonus loop through Oak Creek Canyon. This is a longer route than our typical gentler friendly option. \n“Robles” is Spanish for oaks\, and we’ll see plenty of them on this beautiful\, relaxing hike. After a short street walk to get to the trailhead\, we’ll hike along Los Padres Trail through Sherwood Forest- a wooded patch shaded by huge oak trees.
