SUMMARY:Intermediate 8 miles ~ Ray Miller Trail and Overlook Trail in Malibu
DESCRIPTION:Join us on an out and back hike up the Ray Miller Trail and the Overlook Trail. We’ll enjoy beautiful ocean views as we descend. We’ll pick up about 1300’ gain on this 8 mile adventure. \nLying along the brilliant blue Pacific Ocean at the west end of Malibu (just shy of Port Hueneme)\, the swelling blue ocean is rivaled in beauty by the undulating native California grasslands. On a clear day\, the Channel Islands are easily within sight. \nMost of the trail is exposed\, so sunscreen is highly recommended and plenty of water. \nWe’ll meet in the parking lot near the Ray Miller Trailhead (look for the brilliant yellow sign). There is a parking fee in the lot (or free with state parking pass). You can sign up for all of them or whichever ones you choose to.\nTHIRD RIDE – OLD COAST ROAD BY THE BIXBY BRIDGE\nThis scenic coastal ride just above Big Sur is one of the best in California. We’ll be doing a loop on this ride starting out on Hwy 1 just south of the Bixby Bridge. The ride starts out with beautiful coastal scenery as we make our way down the coast. Once we arrive at the Old Coast Road\, we’ll head into the hills on a well maintained dirt road that’ll offer awesome views of the coastline below. Further along this old road\, we’ll be dropping into a forest of Redwood trees along Sierra Creek as we make our way down to The Bixby Bridge on the coast. \nMake sure that you have a head light and tail light\, as well as having your tires or inner tubes filled with slime to help avoid flats. \nMEETUP LOCATION AND TIME: at 9:00am. \nRESTROOMS: 9 miles into the ride at Andrew Molera State Park \nROUTE This will be our planned route. \nTERRAIN: A very scenic 9 mile paved road and a 10 mile well groomed dirt road. \nDISTANCE: 19 miles \nELEVATION GAIN: Up to 3000′ \nDURATION: 6 hours \nTHE PACE: 6 MPH on up. \nLEVEL: Intermediate \nDEBRIEFING: After the ride\, we can stop for a late lunch at the\nNepenthe Restaurant\, a little slice of paradise which sits high above the Pacific in the majestic Santa Lucia Mountains. \nMY CELL # IS 805-358-5972

SUMMARY:Hill Canyon starting at Santa Rosa Regional Park
DESCRIPTION:Time and date are as noted above. We will start this hike at Santa Rosa Regional Park at the parking area in Hill Canyon but we will take a different route than I usually take. We will cross the bridge over the runoff creek and stay on the trail to hike the Hawk Canyon trail\, there are trees and the path is shady. We will go up the hill\, but we will take the turn-off path and take that route up to the top where the Plateau Rim loop ends. There we will turn around and go back down the Hawk Canyon trail. So this hike is an out and back. The Hawk Canyon Trail connects to Western Plateau Trail back to the parking lot. This is approximately 5 miles with an elevation gain of approximately 1000 feet.\nLunch will be at the Alamo restaurant at Borchard and Michael\, just off Hwy 101\, this lunch supports COSF.\nDirections:\nFrom Moorpark Road in the Santa Rosa Valley\, drive west on Santa Rosa Road for 3.7 miles\, turn left (south) on Hill Canyon Road for about 0.6 miles to the parking lot. \nFrom the 101 Freeway in Camarillo\, take exit 52 onto Santa Rosa Road and drive northeast. SUMMARY:Stagecoach to Angel Vista - Gentler with COSF Benefit Lunch After at the Alamo
DESCRIPTION:The weather will be nice and cool this Thursday\, so a 9 am start time will be fine. \nThis hike is timed so that we can end roughly at 11 am and make our way over to the Alamo (next to the library at Borchard and 101) for lunch; Thursday is COSF Benefit Day at the Alamo\, where they will donate a significant fraction of their take to Conejo Open Space Foundation when you mention COSF when you order. \nThis hike is about 4.5 mile out-and-back trip from Lynn Road to the Rosewood Trail to Angel Vista. There is an option to add more mileage if this shorty is too short for you. We’ll park at the playfield near Stagecoach Inn and walk from Lynn Road on the lower Rosewood Trail\, to the usual trailhead and then on up the trail. \nThe elevation gain/loss is about 900’. It is a well maintained trail with lots of foliage but relatively little shade. DESCRIPTION:Join us for a classic San Gabriel Mountains adventure that pairs high-elevation alpine views with rich Southern California mining history! \n📅HISTORY OF THE AREA\nThis trail traces the steps of Charles “Tom” Vincent\, a Civil War veteran and hunter who lived in solitary self-reliance in these mountains starting in the 1860s. In 1895\, while tracking a bighorn sheep along the steep crags of Mount Baden-Powell\, Vincent spotted quartz veins gleaming with gold. His discovery sparked the creation of the Big Horn Mine. Tens of thousands of dollars in gold were extracted over the following decades\, leaving behind fascinating historic structures hidden high above the canyon floor. \n👁️HIKE OVERVIEW & VIEWS\nWe’ll tackle this hike as a ~4-mile loop (with roughly 1\,000 feet of total ascent) combining dense timbered gulches\, historic artifacts\, and sweeping canyon vistas. \n\nVincent’s Cabin: Starting at Vincent Gap (~6\,600 ft elevation)\, we drop down the forested Vincent Gulch Trail into a shaded ravine lined with towering Jeffrey pines\, sugar pines\, and white firs. Hidden in the trees sits Vincent’s remarkably preserved 19th-century log cabin.\nThe Connector & Mine Road: From the cabin\, we climb a short\, steep connector trail that ascends through pine duff to join Big Horn Mine Road. As we head along this wide shelf carved into the cliff face\, the canopy opens up to dramatic\, sweeping views overlooking Mine Gulch\, the East Fork San Gabriel River gorge\, and the rugged wilderness of the Sheep Mountain area.\nThe Stamp Mill Ruins: The highlight of the route is the massive\, weathered wooden stamp mill clinging to the mountainside. Here\, we can admire the historic timber framework and catch the chilly draft flowing from the gated mine portal.\nFlora & Fauna: Along the trail\, keep an eye out for high-country wildlife—including Nelson’s bighorn sheep perched on the rocky ledges\, mule deer\, and Steller’s jays—and don’t forget to catch the butterscotch-vanilla scent of the Jeffrey pine bark along the ridge!\n\n🚶‍➡️TRAIL DETAILS \n\nDistance: ~4 miles round-trip (Lollipop)\nTotal Ascent: ~1\,000 feet\nDifficulty: Medium due to terrain. Near the midpoint of our ride we’ll have an awesome view as we look down to Morro Bay and Morro Rock.\nOn our route back\, we’ll first stop at See Canyon Fruit Ranch for a glass of cold apple cidar before heading a bit further to the Kelsey See Canyon Vineyards to have a glass of their hard cidar wine. Once we reach Avila Beach\, we’ll have lunch at Mulligan’s Bar & Grill with an ocean view before finishing the ride along the coast back to our cars.\nOPTION ONE: After returning to the cars\, we’ll first head over to the Sycamore Mineral Springs Resort for a one hour hot tub soak.\nOPTION TWO: Drive to The Avila Valley Barn. However\, Mount Baden-Powell has a dark side that will make you question your life choices. Winding its way up the north face of one of the tallest mountains in the San Gabriels\, this iconic trek features 35 to 40 never-ending switchbacks that exist purely to mock your physical preparation and repeatedly whack your spirit. It’s basically a vertical game of “Whack-a-Mole\,” but your thighs and lungs are the moles. \nYou will earn every single foot of this climb as you ascend through stands of Jeffrey\, Ponderosa\, and Lodgepole pines\, eventually reaching the timberline where you’ll pass Wally Waldon—a 1\,500-year-old Limber Pine who is a local celebrity and has been judging hikers since the fall of the Western Roman Empire. SUMMARY:To Serra Cross Park at Grant Park ~ Gentler Intermediate
DESCRIPTION:NOTE: We will meet at the Museum parking lot between Santa Clara and Main Street. \nIt will be cool on Tuesday and this is an alternative hike for Tuesday where you can get some elevation. We will hike from the museum up to the cross and a few trails in the upper botanical garden\, before we head back down. Bring money or credit card\, so we can stop along the way for lunch or a cool smoothie. \nThis hike will start at the Museum of Ventura County parking lot. We will then cross Main Street and take the stairs up to Poli Street where we can connect to Brakey Road (This will be safer than Ferro as no cars are allowed) and hike up to the top of the hill to the Sierra Cross at Grant Park. After a few trails on the upper part of the gardens\, we will come down Summit Drive to N Kalorama Street\, which will take us to Main Street. Rather than go to the pier\, we’ll cut it short and walk to N Palm Street\, where we can have lunch at my new favorite spot in Ventura called CAJÉ. If you want to skip lunch\, you can continue on Main Street to the museum parking. \nAnyone who wants to make it longer can walk down to the pier and eat at the taco place. (It opens at 11:00 AM.) SUMMARY:Malibu Creek State Park - Fall Equinox Hike
DESCRIPTION:On Saturday\, September 26\, Malibu Creek State Park (MCSP) will be holding its 50th anniversary celebration. We will get a jump start on the celebration by doing a grand tour of the central/western part of the park. Our hike starts from MCSP’s Lower/Main Trailhead parking lot. You will be entering the state park through the staffed kiosk off of Las Virgenes so have your state park pass or entrance fee ($3/hour\, $11/day) handy. \nOur MCSP adventure begins with a riparian detour through the Ann Skager trail via the campground amphitheater. After the Ann Skager loop we will pick up the High Road that runs along Malibu Creek and connects with Crags Road. Crags Road climbs up to Century Lake. We will stop to enjoy Century Dam’s man-made waterfall (overflow) and then continue our climb using the Lookout Trail which affords panoramic views of the western end of the park. From there we will proceed to the MASH site which will be our turnaround point. We will return the way we came (sans Lookout trail)\, adding on a loop up and over the Grassland Trail with views of the eastern end of the park (and the main parking lot from whence we started). \nThis out-and-back hike\, plus those side trips\, clocks in at around 7 miles\, with an elevation gain/loss of about 650‘. \nDirections: From the 101 Freeway take Las Virgenes Rd.\, south for about 3.5 miles to the MCSP entrance (first right after crossing Mulholland). \nPlease review the guidelines (link to the guidelines) to join our hikes.\nRestrictions apply for your safety and ours: \n\nDon’t show up unless you’re shown on the “Attending” list.\nPLEASE bring plenty of water.\nYour safety is your own personal responsibility\, but the hike leader reserves the right to ask you to leave if you come unprepared.\nNo “Plus Ones” or dogs on Weekday Trailblazer hikes.\n\nDISCLAIMER/RELEASE OF LIABILITY – PLEASE READ IN ITS ENTIRETY\nThe hike host is a volunteer and not responsible for the group. SUMMARY:Emma Beach Bike Path walk/Hike (Costal Series 1)
DESCRIPTION:Tuesday morning at Emma Wood State Beach forecast is clear to mostly sunny skies with excellent walking conditions that hover around high 60s°F to middle 70s°F. \nI have planned a series of 4-5 hike/walk coastal bike path treks that include small “stepping out” excursions to the beach. The treks will be about 5-6 miles (out and back time) from Ventura to Carpinteria with each starting point commencing from the previously week’s return point each time. The initial trek starts in Ventura and progresses North toward Carpinteria. \nOverall\, the coastal walking and biking route from Ventura to Carpinteria spans roughly 16 miles one-way (32 miles round trip) along a scenic route hugging the Pacific Ocean. We can easily explore segments of this route. \nThe hikes will bring joyful/scenic coastal views of the vast\, open horizon where the blue ocean meets the sky and allows listening to the steady rhythm of crashing waves and feeling a cool sea breeze. It brings a deep sense of peace and calm. \nThis walk will be about 5-6 miles each time.\nThe attendee limit of 10 is firm. The consecutive starting points is the previous rerunning point each time. \nPlease join me and enjoy beautiful nature as well as getting some exercise and feeling a sense of accomplishment. \nDirections: From US-101\, exit 70A to California St and turn right onto California St. Then turn left onto Thompson Blvd and drive 0.7 miles. Turn left onto Main St. and drive about 0.8 miles and turn left onto Park Access Rd. to Ventura River Group Park if you have The Senior Golden Bear Pass.\n(There is free public parking lot as you turn onto Main St. and drive 0.2miles and turn left into the W. Please consider car-pooling; Helga Court is not very long. \nI can almost guarantee that you’ve never been on this part of the Potrero Ridge Trail. In fact\, I have rarely seen another human being on any part of the trail between Lynn and Wendy\, and fairly few between Wendy and Reino on weekdays. \nThis trail is generally an out-and-back\, with a loop at the furthest point taking us briefly down neighborhood streets to get from one part of the trail to the next. SUMMARY:SATWIWA PARKING LOT
DESCRIPTION:This hike will start in the Satwiwa parking lot. We will go down the paved road to the bottom of the hill. Then we will turn left and go up along the waterway (which will be dry) up to the old oak tree. We will then go up on the ridge and back to the cars. The canyon is beautiful\, but is now brown (so the picture is wrong) but hopefully not as many mosquitos as Ray Miller trail. We will start at 8:30 but bring plenty of water\, wide hat\, sturdy shoes or boots and hiking poles if you favor them.\nTotal distance is roughly 5 miles\, with about 700′ of elevation gain. There are trees as you start up the waterway. \nDirections: \nRancho Sierra Vista · Newbury Park\, CA \nHow to find us\nExit Ventura Fwy (101) on Wendy road if coming from the North\, or at Lynn Road if coming from the South. Go towards the ocean. On Wendy you will hit Lynn Road\, from the south it remains Lynn Road. Take a right from Wendy or go along Lynn to Via Goleta. Rancho Sierra Vista entrance (through the stone pillars and arch) is on the left. SUMMARY:FALL BACKBONE TRAIL 2026 #5 - Malibu Creek to Latigo Canyon
DESCRIPTION:Our fifth Wilderness Adventures Section Fall 2026 Backbone Trail hike in the Santa Monica Mountains will be l0 miles with 2800 elevation gain on the BBT going from the Malibu Creek area to the Latigo Canyon Trailhead. We will take the Mesa Peak Trail though the upper Corral and Solstice Canyon areas.The outing will be a one-way shuttle hike. Bring water\, snacks\, sunscreen\, and a good attitude. \nWe will meet at 7:30 AM at the Backbone Trail at Latigo Canyon Trailhead on Latigo Canyon Road\, from PCH go north 7 miles on Latigo Canyon Road to a dirt lot on the right side or from the 101 go 7 miles south on Kanan Dume to a left on Latigo Canyon Road then 3 miles to the dirt lot now on your left. From the meeting point at the Latigo Canyon Trailhead we will car shuttle 14 miles to the start point at the Malibu Creek State Park Backbone Trailhead near Piuma and Las Virgenes. Carpools are encouraged. \nThis is a Front Country hike. A medical form is recommended\, but not required. If you have one\, please carry it with you. Gloves recommended. Hiking shoes/boots with good tread. Layers are always a good idea. Hat\, sunscreen; Wet bandana or cooling towel recommended in case of heat. Bring Face Nets! There WILL BE a LOT of flying bugs/gnats/etc trying to fly up your nose!\nHIKING POLES: Highly recommended since we’re crossing an overgrown creek many times!.\nFOOD/DRINKS: Snacks and 2-1/2+ liters of water MINIMUM\, and sufficient electrolytes or salt tablets. We will be stopping along the PCT for a snack break.\nHIKE DESCRIPTION:\nFrom the Lower Shake Trailhead on Pine Canyon Road\, we’ll head up a steep canyon\, with an active stream\, so there is a LOT of plant overgrowth along the creek – and along with that is LOTS of poison oak. I’ve cleared a pathway through it\, but you still have to be aware of what poison oak looks like. IT IS AVOIDABLE IF YOU ARE OBSERVANT AND CAREFUL! \nWe’ll make our way to Upper Shake Campground and take a short breather and water break.\nWe’ll do the trail in “reverse” of many past visits. Rather than walking UP a long road\, we’ll do the uphill on the more pleasant PCT. We’ll climb up the Upper Shake Trail to the shady PCT. Along the PCT\, we’ll stop at a little camping spot the thru-hikers use for a snack break\, then continue on the PCT for quite a while\, towards Forest Route 7N23\, then down that dirt road to Upper Shake Campground\, where we’ll head back down the canyon to the trailhead. We will get great views here and there out over the Mojave and toward Tehachapi. \n**THIS HIKE RANKING: Level 3 (Intermediate – see chart below)**:\nHIKE RANKING SCALE – Consider your capabilities before RSVP’ing for a hike to ensure you are properly conditioned for a hike:\n1) Beginner: 1-3 miles\, less than 500 feet elevation gain\n2) Beginner/Intermediate: 1-7 miles\, less than 700 feet elevation gain\n3) Intermediate: 5-10 miles\, 1000-2000 feet elevation gain\n4) Intermediate/Advanced: 7-12 miles\, up to 3000 feet elevation gain\n5) Advanced: 10-17 miles\, 3000 feet or more elevation gain \nWARNINGS: \n\nThe canyon leaving the trailhead has lots of poison oak (and Poodle Dog Bush up higher). If you are squeamish or reactive to poison oak\, I highly advise that you wear long sleeve shirt\, long pants\, and gloves. Higher up the trail\, we’ll find some poison oak\, and quite a bit of Poodle Dog Bush on the crossing the trail. Both Poison Oak and Poodle Dog Bush are toxic to touch. PAY ATTENTION TO THE HIKE LEADER\, AND KNOW WHAT BOTH PLANTS LOOK LIKE\, since they are both very prevalent along parts of the trail\, and hard to avoid if you are not CAREFUL! I HIGHLY RECOMMEND you wear long pants and long sleeves. Gloves would be a good idea also. I recommend you have Ivarest Poison Ivy Itch Cream or other suitable alternative. I would put it on before the hike\, but also bring it in case you are exposed to poison oak.\nThere are portions of this trail with adjacent steep drop offs. Head North on San Francisquito Cyn for 19.9 miles\, through Green Valley to the junction with Elizabeth Lake Road – bear left. At next main junction with the Lake Elizabeth sign ahead of you\, turn left and go 4.6 miles into Lake Hughes town and out the other side. After seeing the junction with Lake Hughes Road come in on your left\, stay on Pine Canyon Road\, for 4.5 miles more after the Lake Hughes Road junction. Trail head is on left (look for mile marker 4.54). \nFrom 5 FWY: Take the 5 North and get off at Exit 176B\, Lake Hughes Road/ Castaic. Turn right at bottom of ramp\, (McDonalds will be at the first light\, on left). Go straight through light\, following Lake Hughes Road\, for 22.9 miles from McDonalds out of town to Lake Hughes. Arriving at the junction of Lake Hughes Road and Pine Canyon Road\, turn left and head almost 5 miles North out Pine Canyon Road to the trailhead. Look for white Mile Marker 4.54\, on the right of road. Park on the shoulder opposite the posts at trail head (see photos of trailhead/ mile marker in the album attached to this listing). \nFrom Antelope Valley/ Acton: Drive West taking Elizabeth Lake Road through Leona Valley to Lake Hughes. Pass through Lake Hughes town and after seeing the junction with Lake Hughes Road come in on your left\, continue straight. If you sign up for this hike\, you are verifying that this hike is within your abilities. \nSHAKE CANYON: HISTORY\, GEOLOGY & CHARACTER \nShake Canyon is a surprisingly historic and geologically interesting corner of the Angeles National Forest\, tucked against the north side of Sawmill Mountain west of Lake Hughes. Its character comes from the unusual combination of a shady\, tree-lined canyon\, nearly century-old recreation sites\, abandoned Forest Service infrastructure\, the Pacific Crest Trail\, and the nearby San Andreas Fault system. \nLower Shake Camp and Upper Shake Campground were established by at least the 1930s. A 1938 Los Angeles County Trails Magazine describes driving Pine Canyon Highway to a rough access road leading ¼ mile to Lower Shake Camp\, then hiking a “beautiful tree lined canyon” 1½ miles to Upper Shake Campground and continuing toward Sawmill Mountain. The complete recommended outing was about ten miles. A nearby Pine Canyon Ranger Station issued fire permits. \nThus\, both the campgrounds and their access roads/trails are at least about 90 years old\, and possibly older. By the 1950s\, USGS maps show Lower Shake\, Upper Shake\, Sawmill Campground\, the ranger station and an extensive network of motorways\, firebreaks and trails.\nGeologically\, the setting is exceptional. Pine Canyon Road follows the San Andreas Rift Zone\, the great tectonic corridor separating the Pacific and North American plates. Shake Canyon also contains a separate Shake Canyon Fault\, named by USGS geologists for exposures near Upper Shake Campground. \nThe historic canyon trail eventually reaches the Pacific Crest Trail\, linking an early Southern California recreation route with today’s Mexico-to-Canada trail system. Upper Shake later became accessible by Forest Service road\, but storm damage forced its closure in 2005; the Forest Service subsequently planned reconstruction. \nToday the area’s appeal is partly its sense of forgotten history: old roads\, pipes\, campground sites and trails remain among oaks\, maples and surprisingly lush canyon vegetation. Shake Canyon feels less like a modern trail and more like walking through layers of Southern California geology\, early Forest Service history and nearly a century of mountain recreation.

SUMMARY:FALL BACKBONE TRAIL 2026 #6 – Latigo Canyon to Encinal Canyon
DESCRIPTION:Our sixth Wilderness Adventures Section Fall 2026 Backbone Trail hike in the Santa Monica Mountains will be 8 miles with 1300′ gain on the BBT through Newton\, Zuma\, and Trancas Canyons. We will start at the Latigo Canyon Trailhead taking the Backbone Trail across Kanan Road then taking the Zuma Canyon Trail over to Encinal Canyon.The outing will be a one-way shuttle hike. Bring water\, snacks\, sunscreen\, and a good attitude. \nWe will meet at 7:30 AM at the Backbone Trail at Encinal Canyon Trailhead. From PCH go 6 miles north on Kanan Dume Road to Mulholland Hwy then west 3 miles on Encinal Canyon Road to shoulder parking on north side of road just east of Fire Camp #13.From the meeting point at the Encinal Canyon Trailhead we will car shuttle 7 miles to the start point at the Latigo Canyon Trailhead. Carpools are encouraged. \nThis is a Front Country hike. A medical form is recommended\, but not required. If you have one\, please carry it with you. We will start on Peters Canyon Trail and take this to East Ridge View Trail. This is where we will go up Big Red. Then we will continue on this trail until we get to Eucalyptus to loop back.
