SUMMARY:Mt. McCoy - Annual Cross Lit Hike
DESCRIPTION:3 miles\, 700′ gain\, Easy Intermediate\nEasier Option: 2.4 mi\, 530′ gain. (1343 Los Amigos Ave\, Simi Valley\, CA 93065\, or 89 La Paz Ct\, Simi Valley\, CA 93065 to save another 500′ distance). \nA special treat: The cross will be lit! The Rotary Club lights the cross for the week from Palm Sunday to Easter Sunday\, and our group has been doing this hike every year since the group started. \nWe’ll meet in the parking lot at the northeast corner of Madera and Royal\, just south of the Donut Delite\, on the east side of the Clinicas office. We’ll walk from there to the trailhead at 2 Washburn St. where it meets Los Amigos Ave. \nSunset time is 7:13p. Our hike up will be in daylight and we should arrive near sunset. \nThe Hike\nRated “Easy Intermediate” due to the 1 mile continuous incline that can get exhausting\, but a fit beginner can easily complete it. \nWe cross Madera and continue through the neighborhood for about 1500′\, to the intersection of Washburn St. and Los Amigos Ave. Then we enter a path behind the houses and proceed for 250′ to the entrance. So far\, there will have been very little elevation gain. \nFor those that want a little easier option start at this address: 1366 Los Amigos Ave\, Simi Valley\, CA 93065. \nWe’ll enter a series of switchbacks for 1.2 miles to a large cross at the top. This is a steady climb across the face of the hill\, always in full view of the neighborhood below. There is nothing wrong with slowing down while faster hikers move ahead\, or resting for a minute during this climb. \nIt may seem easy to get lost because there are many different cross-paths up the face of this hill\, but they all lead to the same place. Generally\, whenever there is a choice of “left or right”\, we take the easier and more worn path. If you happen to find yourself alone and take a wrong turn (aka steep cut)\, all paths lead up. \nAt the top by the cross\, we’ll enjoy the gorgeous 360 degree views and share beverages and/or snacks. \nEasy Option: 2.25 mi\, 650′ gain.\nJust a little easier. Park at the traihead: 4 Washburn St\, Simi Valley\, CA 93065 \nInteresting Notes\nHere are a couple plants you are sure to see on this hike: \nBlack Sage\nMultiple brown buttons going up the top of the stalk\, that may have white flowers. Green leaves. Purple or white flowers that are dark brown as they dry on the plant. Squish the leaves and smell. \nA rare and sought after Black sage honey is also made from the honey of bees that pollinate the Black sage plant. Black sage is utilized in the culinary world as an aromatic and flavorful herb. It can be used in recipes wherever traditional sage is called for\, however keep in mind that foraged Black sage has a much stronger flavor than that of traditional store bought sage. \nIts flavor goes well with winter squashes\, brown butter\, poultry\, venison\, pears\, cheese\, potatoes and other herbs such as rosemary and thyme. Use fresh in a variety of different preparations or leaves. Can be dried and stored for future use as a dried herb. Black sage was used traditionally by Native Americans known as the Chumash people to form an herbal soak for the bath to be used in the treatment of bodily pain\, specifically for the feet and lower legs. \nPurple Sage\nGrey-green leaves. Aromatic when crushed. Purple flowers. Aka\, Tobacco Sage\, with mild hallucinogenic properties when smoked. Can be used as a spice or made into a tea. Tea has medicinal affects: Antiviral\, gargle for sore throats\, reduce hay fever symptoms and other drying actions. \nDistance: 3 miles (round trip)\nElevation Gain: 700′\nDifficulty: Easy Intermediate\nDuration: 3 1/2 hours\nPace: 2.0 mph\nDogs: Yes.\nRestrooms/Drinking Fountain: Yes – at nearby places of business\nParking: Free\nTrail: Mostly single-track \nWhat to Bring\n1-2 liters of water.\nSnacks and/or beverages to share\nHiking or athletic shoes.\nFlashlight or headlamp. \nDirections\nFor those doing the regular route:\n1424 Madera Rd\, Simi Valley\, CA 93065 \nFAQ\nHiking Plus Page Links\nDisclaimer / Release of Liability

SUMMARY:Collins Valley Anza Borrego Overnight
DESCRIPTION:The road to Collins Valley washed out during the hurricane and is still closed to vehicles so this is a great opportunity to do an easy trip. There should still be plenty of flowers. I drove to the closed gate in October and a Subaru could easily make it\, not sure about a regular vehicle.\nLocation: End of open road \nRight now weather looks great. If it gets too hot I will cancel the trip.\nWeather \nFriday night: I’m going to camp out close to closed gate. \nSaturday:\nHike to Sheep Canyon Primitive campground 4mi 600ft Track\nThere was water in the lower part of Sheep Canyon in October. I am confident there is still water there. There has also been water in Indian Canyon every time I’ve been there.\nIn the afternoon explore Sheep Canyon (optional). See photos of Jerry Schad’s trip description. \nSunday:\nMaybe check out Cougar Canyon. Hike out. \nDISCLAIMER: Hike at your own risk. Be responsible for yourself and your safety. Make good decisions. With any trip\, things can change\, reservations can get lost\, the unexpected can happen. A go-with-the-flow attitude is always a good thing\, and most importantly\, let’s all have fun! This is an easy hike. SUMMARY:Magic Mountain Trail
DESCRIPTION:https://www.alltrails.com/trail/us/california/magic-mountain \nHello Fellow Hikers\,\nThis little known trail is where Magic Mountain theme park got its name. It’s a constant climb that peaks at 4\,846 ft. And as per several descriptions\, this was once the site of the radar for the nuclear-tipped Ajax missiles in the 1950s. After the missiles were decommissioned\, it was used as a test site for the control thrusters on the Apollo Lunar module. Magic Mountain’s “remote” location was ideal “for rocket testing with highly reactive and/or toxic propellants.” Remnants of the test site — the water tanks and the test beds — are still visible. Afterwards this road was used for OHV but has now been taken back by mother nature so its a old paved road. Some of the road has been washed away but we follow the path that’s not on this section of road. Vehicles are no longer permitted on this trail and it is used mostly by hikers\, runners and MB. Once at the top there is a peak marker and the communication towers but those that have been here\, stated the views on top is why you hike here. Carpooling at our same meetup spot will be offered for anyone who wishes to carpool or follow to the trailhead (Best donuts located 2325 Kuehner Dr # 127 Simi Valley off the 118 freeway at 9:15 am) have attached the AllTrails link for directions\, pics\, and stats…https://www.alltrails.com/trail/us/california/magic-mountain \nTrail out and back\nMiles 14.4\nElevation Gain 2506 ft\nRated hard\nDogs allowed but must be trained for longer harder hikes\nParking paved lot and side dirt road the ranger site doesn’t specify whether you need an Adventure Pass but have one just incase. \nAs of now there is no sweeper for this hike so please know if you feel you can not finish for any reason please turn back early \nPlease check back on hike info as rain\, heat advisory\, strong winds or low attendance may cause the hike to be rescheduled \nGolden rules: \n\nHike your own hike\nPlease stop at every junction and split to wait for others to catch up\n\nPlease remember to bring all essentials you’ll need for a hike (water\,hat\,sunglasses\,hiking boot/hiking shoes poles if needed snacks) \nLiability Disclaimer:\nAnd last….The Organizer\, Co Organizer\, Assistant Organizers and Event hosts in this group are not professional guides. The function of the Organizer is only to organize the trip. Each person who signs up for an Event is responsible for his or her own safety and the safety of his or her guest. Remember this is your hike. All responsibilities are of your own once you attend. Please be aware of your limit. During outdoor activity you can encounter bodily injury\, snake bites\, sunburn\, overheating\, etc. This is not within our control and we ask that you are prepared for any of the above once you sign up for an Event. If you need to take several breaks (not counting quick breather breaks) and stops throughout a hike\, the hike maybe too much for your ability. Please check each event for miles\, elevation gain\, and difficulty rating. The higher the elevation gain means more incline and less leveled off sections. We offer all levels of hikes from moderate to hard to advanced only. We encourage everyone to not give up work on your core by joining our easier moderate Events and then joining our harder hikes once you are ready. 😊

SUMMARY:Intermediate 7 mile ~ Ray Miller Trail and Overlook Trail in Malibu
DESCRIPTION:Join us on an out and back hike up the Ray Miller Trail and the Overlook Trail. We’ll enjoy beautiful ocean views as we descend. SUMMARY:Long Canyon - Easy cc lollipop - the back way
DESCRIPTION:4.3 miles\, 800′ gain\, Easy Intermediate.\nEasier Option: 3.2 miles\, 400′ gain\, Fit Beginner. \nThe address is not the address of the hike\, but a nearby address that should get you to pass by the trailhead. \nThe “cc” in the title means counter clockwise. We’ll be stopping at various points to regroup. \nWe will start by heading the back way on a mostly flat section from the Long Canyon trailhead parking lot to an asphalt road\, then left to the Poopond and trail split. At this point\, if you want a shorter hike\, turn left for 0.6 miles and 220 feet of gain\, arriving at the Rockuzzi on the left. \nOtherwise\, we’ll turn right and make our way down to the Autumn Ridge trail\, make a left heading sharply up for about 100′\, then left on the fireroad for almost a mile up to the five-points junction. We’ll make a sharp left\, then another left after about 500′ at the bench\, heading up 50 yards and then down the Sunrise trail. \nAfter about 1000′\, we’ll head into the rocks into or next to the Rockcuzzi\, a natural circular indentation in the rocks\, hidden from view unless you know where it is\, for a snack share social event for 30-60 minutes. \nFinally\, we continue down the Sunrise trail\, take the Woodridge Loop trail back to the asphalt road\, then head back the way we came along the Woodridge Connector back to the lot. \nInteresting Notes \nTurkey Mullein\nSmashed leaves can be thrown into the water to stupefy fish\, causing them to float to the surface\, a practice illegal in most states. The seeds are not toxic to birds and are enjoyed especially by doves and wild turkeys. \nAncient Greeks rolled and dried the leaves\, then used them as wicks for oil lamps. They were used as torches burned at funerals. Many tribes employed the use of mullein leaf tea for coughs\, colds\, and rheumatism. They considered it to be analgesic\, anti-inflammatory\, antispasmodic\, and expectorant. The astringent and demulcent properties of the leaf tea were found useful in cases of diarrhea. \nWild Oats\nThe mature seed of the plant is used as a cereal grain. All oats have edible seeds\, although they are small and hard to harvest in most species. Oats are hard to tell apart from weedy relatives\, so the term “sowing wild oats” came to be used to describe unprofitable activities and destructive sexual liaisons of an unmarried young male that could result in children being born out of wedlock. \nHike\nDistance: 4.3 miles\nGain: 800\nDistribution: Most of the incline is in the middle of this hike. It is a fire road incline of about 1 mile.\nDifficulty: Easy Intermediate.\nShape: Lollipop\, counter-clockwise.\nPace: 2.0 mph.\nTrail Type: Fire road\, single and double track. Areas of sand\, gravel\, and rock\, some of it rugged.\nDuration: 3.5 hours\nDogs: Yes.\nRestrooms: No\nDrinking Fountains: No.\nParking: Free in the lot at the trail head. \nWhat to bring:\n1 liter of water for every 3 miles.\nSnacks and/or beverages to share\nHiking shoes preferred\, but athletic shoes will be OK.\nFlashlight or headlamp.\nSunscreen and/or hat as needed. \nHosting\nRoute: The host knows the route.\nNavigation: Host memory\, enhanced by GPS navigation as needed.\nHike type: Social. \nStops:\nThe host may designate stopping points to let others catch up. This hike will include an extended stop for a snack and beverage share at the 2/3 point along the hike. \nWe will stop at junctions to make sure everybody makes any turns or chooses the correct direction at splits\, else something will be used to mark the direction\, usually a large arrow made of baking soda or sticks. There may not always be a sweeper designated to be the last hiker. \nEach hiker is responsible for knowing their capability\, only attending events where they are able to sustain the described pace\, for keeping up with the group sufficiently enough to make the turns and not get left behind\, and for making sure the host is notified if they are going to split from the group. \nDirections:\nWhere Long Canyon Rd. and S. Wood Ranch Pkwy. intersect in Simi Valley\, at the traihead in the paved parking lot on the southwest corner. \nFrom CA-23 and I-101\nNorth CA-23\, exit Olsen Rd.\nRight (east) on Olsen Rd.\, which becomes Madera Rd.\, for 2 miles.\nRight (south) on N. Wood Ranch Pkwy.\, which becomes S. Wood Ranch Pkwy.\, for 2 miles.\nRight at dead end (intersection with Long Canyon Rd.) and immediate left into parking lot.\nTrailhead at the opposite corner. \nFrom CA-118 and CA-27\nWest CA-118\, exit 23 onto 1st St.\nLeft (south) on 1st St.\, which becomes Long Canyon Rd.\, for 5 miles.\nCross at dead end (intersection with S. Wood Ranch Pkwy.) and immediate left into parking lot.\nTrailhead at the opposite corner. \nCoordinates of trailhead: 34.228330\, -118.803130\nAddress of a nearby house: 572 Bannister Way\, Simi Valley\, CA 93065. \nArrive early\, because sometimes the parking lot gets full. If this happens\, we’ll need another 15 minutes to carpool from a nearby parking lot. \nFAQ\nHiking Plus Page Links\nDisclaimer / Release of Liability

SUMMARY:Flash Hike: HWD Ranch - Mormon Canyon (Rain or Shine)
DESCRIPTION:Another HWD Original! \nSee also https://www.hikingwithdean.com/event/hwd-ranch-mormon-canyon-loop-2/ for more details \nThe HWD Ranch is located within the stunning Hidden Creeks parkland near the confluence of Browns Creek and Mormon Creek. The parkland provides a key migration corridor and perennial water source to a full complement of large mammals including black bear\, mountain lion\, mule deer\, bobcat\, American badger\, grey fox\, long-tailed weasel\, ring-tailed cat\, and the endangered California Condor. \nNature won’t be the only thing we’ll experience. We may get a chance to meet Ferdinand\, a bull that roams the area and a couple of wild horses. There are lots of old artifacts to explore along the way\, including old ranch houses\, abandoned ranch vehicles\, a dam and much more! So expect a lot of stops along the way. \nHIKE IS 5-6 MILES WITH ABOUT 800 FT TOTAL ASCENT AND IS RATED EASY+. See the hike rating guide \nDIRECTIONS:\nHead toward the map pin using Google Map. You are going to park in a turnout on Brown’s Canyon Rd on either side of driveway to old Misty Hollow Ranch – now owned by MRCA \nSee the HWD website for more details and pics \nThere is an old for-sale sign post. You can park in turnout immediately before or immediately after that. We’ll meet in the driveway by that signpost

SUMMARY:Mission Point The Hard Way
DESCRIPTION:See the hike report from last year’s trip: https://www.hikingwithdean.com/mission-point-the-hard-way \nO’Melveny Park spreads over 672 acres\, second on the list of largest parks within the City of Los Angeles\, right after Griffith Park. Noted for its picture-perfect picnic grounds with white fences and towering eucalyptus trees\, O’Melveny Park also challenges hikers with several miles of steep\, backcountry fire roads and primitive trails. \nNormally our hike to the highest spot in the San Fernando Valley known as Mission Point uses the steep Grotto Trail or my alternate no-name one u. Our return would use the Bee Canyon trail \nHowever\, this time we will explore some of those little used and overgrown trails we have seen crisscrossing our other paths. Instead of returning via Bee Canyon\, we’ll use the Pipleline Trail (an alternate to Neon Way) \nTrekking poles recommended for this one: https://www.hikingwithdean.com/shop/amazon-top-10/ \nHike is about 5 miles with 1800 ft total ascent and rated DIFFICULT due to terrain. See the Hike Rating Guide \nHistorical Note \nO’Melveny Park takes its name from the well-known family of Los Angeles lawyers who once owned a gentleman’s ranch here. John O’Melveny bought the land in 1941 and called it CJ Ranch. Cattle roamed the hills\, a citrus orchard was planted\, and family members enjoyed spending weekends roaming the mountains. Although areas near the ranch were oil-rich\, exploration on the ranch was unsuccessful. The O’Melvenys deeded half their ranch to Los Angeles\, and the city purchased the rest \nDirections \nHead for O’Melveny Park using the map pin and Google Maps. The parking lot is small and fills up quickly. Plan on parking on neighboring streets. \nTrail statistics are approximate. For safety purposes always assume they are underestimated. But don’t be disappointed if they are overestimated.\nBring more water and snacks than you think you’ll need. \nTrail descriptions are based on previous hikes. Current conditions are unknown until arrival. Expect the unexpected and plan accordingly. \nThe Organizers and members of Hiking With Dean are not professional leaders\, guides\, or mountaineers. The function of the member or organizer is only to organize the trip. Each person who shows up for a trip/meetup (and their guest or guests) is responsible for his or her own safety. SUMMARY:Total Eclipse! Eagle Rock Loop Arkansas
DESCRIPTION:April 8th 2024 is the last total eclipse in the lower 48 until 2044. What better way to experience it than on a backpacking trip? The Eagle Rock Loop is very close to the center and will experience 4 minutes of total eclipse. \nEagle Rock Loop\n27 miles 4100 feet\nUSFS Guide\nAlltrails\nFarOut\nGood YouTube video \nSaturday April 6th\nI’m flying to Dallas (DFW) arriving at 2:04PM (Frontier 1426)\nPick up rental car and drive to the trailhead (250 miles ~4.5 hours)\nI have rented a “mid-size SUV” so I’ll have room for 3 passengers.\nCamp near trailhead \nSunday April 7th\nHike half the trail counter clockwise (thinking of camp here ) \nMonday April 8th\nHike\nTotal eclipse at about 1:50pm (it will be hard to miss). I think we should be at Eagle Rock Vista by then.\nHike almost all the rest of the trail \nTuesday April 9th\nHike a few miles back to car\nDrive back to Dallas to catch 5:10pm flight (Frontier 2927) \nWARNINGS \n\nI have never backpacked anywhere other than California.\nThere is a significant chance of rain on this trip. April averages 6″ and 11 days of precipitation. Be prepared to hike in the rain.\nThere are many crossings of the Little Missouri River. The level can get too high to cross safely (see this video)\nThere are ticks and mosquitos. Spray your clothes with permethrin and bring insect repellant (DEET or Picaridin)\nIf you are flying remember you cannot bring fuel with you so you’ll have to purchase when you get there. Lighters and safety matches are allowed on the plane but not in checked bags. Power banks are also carry-on only.\n\nDISCLAIMER: Hike at your own risk. Be responsible for yourself and your safety. Make good decisions. With any trip\, things can change\, reservations can get lost\, the unexpected can happen. A go-with-the-flow attitude is always a good thing\, and most importantly\, let’s all have fun! This is an intermediate hike. Make sure you are in good enough physical shape for the distance\, elevation changes\, and terrain. The hike leaders in this group aren’t professional hike leaders.
