SUMMARY:Liebre Mountain via PCT (Replaces Jackson Lake hike due to Bridge Fire)
DESCRIPTION:Liebre Mountain via PCT (Replaces Jackson Lake hike due to Bridge Fire) \nDESCRIPTION: The Bridge fire continues to expand so the road to Lake Jackson is closed as it leads into an evacuation zone (which of course we don’t want to enter). Relatively cooler weather should allow us to enjoy the PCT section up to Liebre Mountain. The forecast is mainly sunny. High 83F. Winds SW at 10 to 20 mph (which should help with air quality). \nThe trail is flattish and parallels the road for about one mile before it turns up the hill. There is not a lot of shade\, in the first part of this hike\, but we will be on the uphill section in the cooler early morning. As we climb a series of moderately graded PCT switchbacks we enjoy nice views of the Antelope Valley NE. After a few miles we take a short break at shady Horse Camp before continuing up through a more wooded area (oaks and pines)\, eventually reaching the ridge at ~5700′. Here there are oaks and sweeping views of the mountains/valleys W and N of us\, including Pyramid Lake and Castaic/ Santa Clarita to the South. \nDETAILS: \n\nHike leader volunteer(s): Tim R.\nMeet: Pacific Crest Trail\, Co Hwy N2 at 7:45 am\, departure at 8:00 am sharp (Sep 14).\nDistance: Approximately 8.6 miles.\nElevation gain: Approximately 2\,067 feet.\nTime: Approximately 4.5 hours hiking including a snack break.\nConditioning: You need to be in generally good physical condition.\nDogs: Dogs are allowed.\nRestrooms: There are bathrooms at the trailhead.\nAdventure Pass: Not Required.\n\nIMPORTANT NOTES: We’ll hike at a brisk pace and ask everyone to stay with the group for a friendly and safe outing. \nESSENTIAL GEAR: Hiking boots and poles. SUMMARY:Coquina Mine Trail (Loop)
DESCRIPTION:https://www.alltrails.com/trail/us/california/coquina-mine-trail–3 \nHello Fellow Hikers\,\nWe have another request to do this trail again…Will be hiking to Coquina Mine in Simi Valley. A little history on the trail from Alltrails…. ” This was a mining operation that started in 1929 and ceased in year 1935. Limestone was mined here for an extremely pure form of Calcium Carbonate (Calcite CaCO3) As you start to travel further up the trail you’ll find abandoned mining equipment with large boulders of both Limestone and Fossils. The trail will end at the mining site with the largest mining equipment abandoned there. This was a strip mining operation so there are no shafts or adits ” This trail is a out and back but will will be doing this as a loop trail. \nTrail mileage about 7 miles\nElevation gain about 1100 ft\nDogs allowed\nWill be a loop trail\nRated Moderate hike\nFree street parking \nThis hike will Start off on a paved road for about 200 feet then becomes a dirt fire road through a Canyon until we turn off to make our climb to Coquina Mine. From here we will be on a single track trail. Once we leave the top of Coquina Mine we will make our way back down to a split were we will start our loop. This section will be narrow and follows the side of a mountain were will follow the backside mountains of Simi Valley. Most of the trail will be in mountain ranges and canyons with no views of housing or commercial buildings. Generally a lot of wildlife in this area so hopefully we will get lucky to see some within eyesight. Just a friendly reminder to please bring enough water for the entire duration of the hike as well as snacks.\nI will load a AllTrails link below that will give you directions to the trailhead location.as well as pics of the trail stats ratings map ect. https://www.alltrails.com/trail/us/california/coquina-mine-trail–3 \nAs of now there is no sweeper for this hike so please know if you feel you can not finish for any reason please turn back early \nPlease check back on hike info as rain\, heat advisory\, strong winds or low attendance may cause the hike to be rescheduled \nPlease remember to bring all essentials you’ll need for a hike\n(water\,hat\,sunglasses\,hiking boot/hiking shoes poles if needed snacks) \nLast thing we will follow Jims most important rules.. \n\nHike Your Own Hike\nStop at all splits or junctions on the trail for others to catch up\n\nLiability Disclaimer:\nAnd last….The Organizer\, Co Organizer\, Assistant Organizers and Event hosts in this group are not professional guides. The function of the organizer is only to organize the trip. Each person who signs up for a Event is responsible for his or her own safety and the safety of his or her guest. Remember this is your hike all responsibilities are of your own once you attend please be aware of your limits. During outdoor activity you can encounter bodily injury\, snake bites\, sunburn\, overheating\, etc. This is not within our control and we ask that you are prepared for any of the above once you sign up for an Event. If you need to take several breaks (not counting quick breather breaks) and stops throughout a hike\, the hike maybe too much for your ability. Please check each event for miles\, elevation gain\, and difficulty rating. The higher the elevation gain means more incline and less leveled off sections. SUMMARY:Gardiner Basin - 5 day tour including Rae Lakes
DESCRIPTION:Gardiner Basin Loop Tour with Rae Lakes. I am posting this trip to gauge interest from the club\, please add your name to the waiting list if you want to join. Potential attendees will be screened and manually added based on experience and history with the group. \nThis trip passes through some of the most beautiful parts of the Sierras including Rae Lakes. The loop will take us from Onion Valley over Kearsarge pass and across the PCT to Charlotte Lake\, then over Gardiner Pass into Gardiner basin\, then turning eastward to cross into Sixty Lakes Basin\, rejoin the PCT north of Rae Lakes\, follow the PCT south through Rae Lakes and then back to Onion Valley. \nTHIS IS NOT A BEGINNER TRIP. The majority of the trip is an off-the-maintained-trail-system loop requiring navigational skills. It is also high altitude\, starting at Onion Valley (9200) and going up from there. We will cross 5 high passes (Kearsarge (11\,800)\, Gardiner (11\,200)\, Sixty Lakes Col (11\,700)\, Glen Pass (11\,900)\, and then Kearsarge again) over 5 days. Sixty Lakes Col is a class 2 scramble. Daily mileage is around 8 – 12 miles per day\, shorter while in the basin to allow side trips. Bear barrels are required. Previous backpacking experience in the Sierras a must\, preferably recently as altitude acclimatization is required. \nItinerary:\nSunday Sept 15th – drive to Onion Valley (approximately 7 hours drive from San Diego)\, camp at Grays Meadow Campground (car camp\, on road up to Onion Valley Trailhead) \nMonday Sept 16th – Enter wilderness via Onion Valley Trailhead\, over Kearsarge Pass to Charlotte Lake. From start at Onion Valley (9200′) over Kearsarge pass (11\,800) 8.3 miles\, elevation gain/loss 2745/1539 \nTuesday Sept 17th – Over Gardiner pass into Gardiner basin\, camp in the basin. From start at Charlotte Lake (10400′) over Gardiner pass (11\,262) and descend to Gardiner Creek (8900) 6.6 miles\, elevation gain/loss 1757/3122. Should have time to explore Gardiner Basin after setting camp. \nWednesday Sept 18th – From Gardiner creek (8900) follow the creek upstream to lake 11407\, then over Sixty Lakes Col (11\,732) and descend into Sixty Lakes Basin to camp there. 6.8 miles\, elevation gain/loss 2800/1270. Short mileage as the climb over the col may be challenging. \nThursday Sept 19th – From Sixty Lakes Basin (10630) over Arrowhead Gap (also noted as basin notch on some maps) to rejoin PCT north of Rae lakes at Arrowhead lake\, proceed south through Rae lakes and over Glen Pass (11991) to camp at Kearsarge Lakes. 10.7 miles\, \, elevation gain/loss 2672/2304 \nFriday Sept 20th – Back to Onion Valley Trailhead. 5.7 mi\, over Kearsarge pass (11818) and down to parking lot (9200). Should get back in time to drive back to San Diego. \nRoute details via CalTopo https://caltopo.com/m/072PR . Carpooling from San Diego to the trailhead will be arranged once the attendees have been finalized. \nDisclaimer: You are responsible for yourself and your safety. After crossing the bridge from the parking lot\, we will start the hike following Hill Canyon trail to the newly opened “Conejo Canyon Bridge” which connects trails on either side of the creek\, Conejo Canyons and Wildwood Park. \nWildwood Park in Thousand Oaks is one of the most versatile local parks there is\, with 27 miles of trails skittering through rocky cliffs\, cacti-filled desert environs\, volcanic rock\, riparian forest\, and a cool\, watery canyon. Highlights of the hike include waterfalls incorporating 40’ Paradise waterfalls along with a long creek\, Indian caves\, volcanic rock cliffs\, and wildflowers throughout. Wildwood’s archetypal western look served as the set for The Rifleman\, Gunsmoke\, and Wagon Train back in the day\, as well as the movie Spartacus. \nWe will pass through various trails with bridges and tree canopies over approximately 5-6 miles with about a 1000’ elevation gain/loss. \nDirections: \nFrom Moorpark Road in the Santa Rosa Valley\, drive west on Santa Rosa Road for 3.7 miles\, turn left (south) on Hill Canyon Road for about 0.6 miles to the parking lot. \nFrom the 101 Freeway in Camarillo\, take exit 52 onto Santa Rosa Road and drive northeast. After 5 miles\, turn right onto Hill Canyon Road for about 0.6 miles to the parking lot. \nPlease review the guidelines (link to the guidelines) to join our hikes.\nRestrictions apply for your safety and ours: \n\nDon’t show up unless you’re shown on the “Attending” list.\nPlan on KEEPING UP with the group and completing the entire hike at a moderate pace**\,** or please find an alternative hike that better suits your hiking level.\nNo “Plus Ones” or dogs on Weekday Trailblazer hikes.\n\nDISCLAIMER/RELEASE OF LIABILITY – PLEASE READ IN ITS ENTIRETY\nThe hike host is a volunteer and not responsible for the group. SUMMARY:Long Canyon - Upside down lollipop
DESCRIPTION:Easy Intermediate\, 4 miles\, 900′ gain\nThe address given\, is not the address of the hike. It is a nearby address that may cause your GPS to drive past the trailhead. \nThis is an upside down lollipop that takes us first to the highest point in the area where the views are fantastic. The return is down around the back side of the hill at the parking lot. \nThere is an initial climb for about 2/3 miles and 425′ of gain that can be strenuous for many if done non-stop\, and there is one other strenuous climb of just under 1/2 mile and 225′ of gain up a fire road. All the rest of the portions of this hike are down or have mild climbs. \nStarting from the Long Canyon trailhead parking lot\, we head up Long Canyon Trail to a bench. We’ll regroup and let others catch up\,then continue on past the five-points intersection and up to the next bench. We’ll take in the views and have a social event for 30-60 minutes. \nWe’ll head back to the first bench. Those that just want to get back to their cars ASAP can take the right trail down to the lot. The rest will continue up the Sunrise trail and follow it all the way to the Woodridge Loop trail at the top of an asphalt path. \nWe’ll take a “sometimes not easy to see” entrance on the right\, getting on the Woodridge Connector and take it back to the parking lot. \nInteresting Notes: \nTurkey Mullein\nSmashed leaves can be thrown into the water to stupify fish\, causing them to float to the surface\, a practice illegal in most states. The seeds are not toxic to birds and are enjoyed especially by doves and wild turkeys. \nAncient Greeks rolled and dried the leaves\, then used them as wicks for oil lamps. It stalks were used as torches burned at funerals. Many tribes employed the use of mullein leaf tea for coughs\, colds\, and rheumatism. They considered it to be analgesic\, anti-inflammatory\, antispasmodic\, and expectorant. The astringent and demulcent properties of the leaf tea were found useful in cases of diarrhea. \nWild Oats\nThe mature seed of the plant is used as a cereal grain. All oats have edible seeds\, although they are small and hard to harvest in most species. Oats are hard to tell apart from weedy relatives\, so the term “sowing wild oats” came to be used to describe unprofitable activities and destructive sexual liaisons of an unmarried young male that could result in children being born out of wedlock. \nHike\nDistance: 4 miles\nGain: 900\nDistribution: Most of the incline is in the first 15 minutes of the hike. The second strenuous climb is up a fire road\, after 1000 more steps\, going up another 0.4 miles.\nDifficulty: Easy Intermediate\nShape: Upside down lollipop\, clockwise.\nPace: 2.0 mph.\nTrail Type: Fire road\, single and double track. Areas of sand\, gravel\, and rock\, some of it rugged.\nTrail Variations: The beginning is a tough climb.\nDuration: 3.5 hours\nDogs: Yes.\nRestrooms: No\nDrinking Fountains: No.\nParking: Free in the paved parking area in front of the trail head. \nWhat to bring\n1 liter of water for every 3 miles.\nSnacks and/or beverages to share\nHiking shoes preferred\, but athletic shoes will be OK.\nFlashlight or headlamp. \nHosting\nRoute: The host knows the route.\nNavigation: Host memory\, enhanced by GPS navigation as needed.\nHike type: Social.\nWe won’t be hiking at a fast pace because this is a social hike\, not a conditioning hike. There is nothing wrong with stopping\, even if it means every 50 steps. \nThose that wish to return immediately instead of hanging around during the snack and beverage share\, should memorize the route so they can safely return on their own. \nStops\nThe host may designate stopping points to let others catch up. This hike will include an extended stop for a snack and beverage share at the half way point. \nWe will stop at junctions to make sure everybody makes any turns or chooses the correct direction at splits\, else something will be used to mark the direction\, usually a large arrow made of baking soda or sticks. There may not always be a sweeper designated to be the last hiker. \nGroup separation\nSometimes hikers wish to move significantly ahead and not wait at designated stopping points. Please let the host know. They are on their own regarding route and navigation. \nDirections\nWhere Long Canyon Rd. and S. Wood Ranch Pkwy. intersect in Simi Valley. SUMMARY:Lindero Canyon Road to Simi Peak - Intermediate
DESCRIPTION:http://photos1.meetupstatic.com/photos/event/e/3/a/0/event_167038272.jpeg \nThis hike has some rocky parts\, but no scrambling. \nThis hike will take us on a scenic trip from the suburbs of Oak Park to the top of Simi Peak\, which overlooks both the Simi and Conejo Valleys and offers splendid views of the Santa Monica range and offshore islands to the south and west. \nOur route begins at the north end of Oak Park. We begin our ascent\, through a series of switchbacks\, a fire road\, and then a double track. Once we reach China Flats\, our remaining route is reasonably flat\, except for the last quarter mile\, as we ascend about 300 feet to reach Simi Peak and its worthwhile views. The terrain is a mix of single and double-file trail and open fire road. \nThe total distance will be approximately 6+ miles with 1400+ feet elevation gain. \nThe hike is mainly open hillside and chaparral. The weather can range from calm to windy and from warm to hot. Dress accordingly. We will stop at Simi Peak to grab a snack and enjoy the great views there\, and return to the traihead via China Flat and then the fire road back to our starting point. \nParking: \nParking is free at the Lindero Canyon Trailhead. Please do not leave anything of value in your car\, at this or any other trailhead. \nDirections: \nFrom the 101 Freeway – Exit the 101 freeway at Lindero Canyon Road and turn north toward the Simi Hills. Drive about 4 miles on Lindero Canyon Road to Wembly Ave. and make a U-turn. After the U-turn\, the China Flats Trailhead will be on the right. Park along the right side of the road and we will meet in front of the marked China Flats Trailhead. \nDISCLAIMER / RELEASE OF LIABILITY \nIMPORTANT\, PLEASE READ BELOW IN ITS ENTIRETY: \nThe hike host is a volunteer and not responsible for the group. Safety should be a priority for everyone in the group. Please treat this meet-up as hiking with a group of friends. SUMMARY:Happy Camp Canyon
DESCRIPTION:Happy Camp Canyon Park was once part of a large cattle ranch. It is an important wildlife corridor linking the Simi Hills with the Santa Susana Mountains. It is a lush riparian oak woodland with an intermittent stream. It’s a beautiful park right in our backyards.(Writeup modified from Jan Lyon’s hike description. Thank You Jan!) \nWe will start at trailhead next to the Rustic Canyon golf course and hike on the Happy Camp Canyon fire road to the hitching post. We will take a short break at the hitching post and then return to our cars. This will be a 5.5 mile out and back hike with approximately 900 feet gain. \nDirections:From the 101 Freeway\, take the 23 north\, exit Princeton Ave. and make a left onto Princeton. Take Princeton to the intersection with Campus Park Drive. Make a left onto Campus Park Drive and follow it to the end. When you enter the golf course\, Campus Park Drive turns into Happy Camp Canyon Road. Take Happy Camp Canyon Road to the end but do not enter the golf course parking lot. Just before you get to the golf course parking lot\, make a right into the dirt parking lot. The parking lot is adjacent to the golf course parking lot and the driving range. \nDISCLAIMER / RELEASE OF LIABILITY\nThe hike host is a volunteer and not responsible for the group. SUMMARY:Ride the Two Winds (Dos Vientos) - Gentler Friendly
DESCRIPTION:Let’s meet at the Community Center under the solar panels in the parking lot. \nThis hike will be in addition to Peter’s hike at Happy Camp Canyon\, but we will be a little slower. \nThis hike will loop around the periphery of Dos Vientos Open Space\, passing Twin Ponds\, overlooking Potrero Road and the Oxnard Plain with the Channel Islands in the background. We will cross 3 streets along the way. \nThis hike is about 5.0 miles with 900 feet of elevation gain. \nPace: This is a gentler friendly hike. We will go at a much slower pace than the Intermediate Trailblazer Hikes\, and we will finish in about 2-2 1/2 hours. Faster hikers are welcome to join us so long as they are willing to hike at the slower pace of the group or wait at the forks on the trail. There are many confusing side trails in Dos Vientos so I ask that everyone plan to stay in contact with the group. \nPlease note this trail is very exposed (no shade) and there is no water along the way. \nDIRECTIONS: From the 101 Freeway in Newbury Park\, exit at Borchard Road. Drive 3.4 miles and turn into the Dos Vientos Community Park on the right\, just after Via Ricardo (and before Via Las Brisas). Meet under the solar panels to the right. \nIf you are coming from the NW\, exit Wendy and turn left on Wendy and then a right on Borchard to Dos Vientos Community Park. \nDISCLAIMER / RELEASE OF LIABILITY\nIMPORTANT\, PLEASE READ BELOW IN ITS ENTIRETY:\nRestrictions apply for your safety and ours:\nDon’t show up unless you’re on the “Attending” list\nUnregistered or waitlisted will be turned away\nNo “Plus Ones” on this hike\nPlan on completing the entire hike or please find an alternative hike that better suits your hiking level.\nNo dogs\nAll participants must be 18 or older\, or accompanied by a parent or legal guardian.\nThe hike host is a volunteer and not responsible for the group. SUMMARY:Limekiln Canyon Lollipop - Suitable for beginners
DESCRIPTION:4 mi\, 500′ gain\, beginner\nEasier option: 1.5 mi\, 125′ gain\, beginner. \nThis is a beginner hike on the beautiful Limekiln trail. \nThis hike is a slight lollipop\, (the shape of the route). There are no extended inclines\, however there are about 5 bumps in the trail with 25-40′ gains\, about 35-65 steps each. This is something a beginner would be able to handle\, but these bumps will get the blood pumping\, as they are like climbing up to 4 flights of stairs. There is nothing wrong with pausing for a breather while tackling these bumps in the trail. \nThe trail varies between asphalt\, gravel fire road\, single tracker\, tree covered\, hilly\, roadside\, wooded\, open air\, and strolls through the park. \nWe’ll enter Limekiln Canyon\, where we’ll first encounter a heavily wooded park with large pine trees lining the trail and blocking out the sun. After about 0.2 miles\, there will be a split. We can go either way because they rejoin after about 100 yards\, but for this route\, we’ll go left. \nAfter another half mile\, the route makes a turn to the right. Those that want the super-easy route should continue straight for 100 yards to a log\, where they can wait about 45 min for the rest of us to return for the social event. \nThe rest of the group will follow the trail to the right and continue for about 1.2 miles. We’ll reach Sesnon Blvd.\, travel about 20 yards west\, and head back in on a different trail. \nAfter several hundred yards\, we’ll reconnect with the original trail for the return. \nJust before we complete the last 3/4 mile\, we’ll turn right instead of left. After about 100 yards\, we’ll find a great spot with a giant fallen tree trunk to have a social event snack and beverage share. \nAfter about 30-60 minutes\, we’ll continue the last 3/4 mile back to our cars. Those that don’t want to stick around are welcome to head back to their cars by any route they choose\, but I’ll take a few splits to the left and cover some different trails\, each that returns back to the original trail after several hundred yards. \nThere will be a couple creek crossings\, where one will use a few stepping stones to avoid getting wet. Click HERE for route. \nInteresting Notes\nHere are a couple plants you are sure to see on this hike: \nCalifornia Buckwheat\nWhen the white flowers turn a rusty brown\, they can be crushed into a powder\, mixed with water\, and baked into bread. The black seeds in the flower heads are also edible. Don’t touch the white flowers if bees are around because they won’t like it and may attack. A cold tea made from the leaves has been used to treat stomachaches and headaches. A warm tea made from the roots has been used to treat colds. The stems are stiff and flexible\, so they have been used by Indians as piercing utensils. \nLaurel Sumac\nRed stems and outline along leaves. The dried flower bunches look like small trees\, and are used by model railroad builders as such\, after being dyed green. Laurel sumac is sensitive to cold and does not tolerate freezing conditions. Orange growers in the early history of southern California used to pick places to plant their oranges based on where laurel sumac was growing because this indicated it would not get too cold for oranges if laurel sumac could grow there. For some\, the sap will irritate their skin just like poison oak\, causing blisters. Also called “Taco Plant”. \nDirections:\nLimekiln Canyon Trail\nPorter Ranch\, CA 91326 \nFrom the 118\nExit Tampa Ave (3 miles east of the Topanga Canyon exit) and head north for 1000′.\nLeft (west) on Rinaldi St. for 1000′.\nTrailhead on the right (north).\nPark on either side of the street. \nThe Hike\nDistance: 4 miles\nElevation Gain: 500′\nDifficulty: Easy\nPace: 2.5 mph\nDogs: Yes\nRestrooms: No\nDrinking Fountains: No\nParking: Free on either side of the street in front of the trail head.\nTrail: Varied. Good condition. \nWhat to Bring:\nSnacks and/or beverages to share\n1-2 liters of water.\nHiking shoes preferred\, but athletic shoes will be OK.\nFlashlight or headlamp. \nFAQ\nHiking Plus Page Links\nDisclaimer / Release of Liability

SUMMARY:Angel Vista - Potluck hike
DESCRIPTION:3.0 miles\, 800′ gain\, easy-intermediate.\nPhoto by Helen \nLet’s enjoy the gorgeous sunset and fun loaded potluck picnic at the beautiful Angel Vista! \nThis is a potluck hike. Please bring food\, drinks to share.\nIf your item requires utensils/plates/toothpicks\, etc.\, please bring them.\nYou may wish to bring your own cup\, plate\, and utensils in case there aren’t any. \nSnacks and/or beverages to share \nThis hike is rated easy-intermediate because it is a continuous incline for 1.5 miles. This isn’t real steep\, but it is continuous\, and many beginner hikers have indicated this should be rated intermediate. \nThat said\, there is no reason a fit beginner cannot complete this hike. If needed\, just stop and rest along the way\, even if it’s every 50 steps. This is not a conditioning hike\, it is a social hike\, and you really can’t get lost. \nThe only junction is 200 yards before the top\, where we’ll turn right to complete the climb. \nAt the top\, there is a picnic table and 360 degree incredible views that are especially wonderful at night. We’ll have a snack-share social event at the top for 30-60 minutes before heading back the way we came. Please bring some food and drink to share\, and utensils of your item requires it. \nThe top has been known to sometimes be very cool and windy. Please bring something to put on in case it is that way at the top. \nInteresting Notes \nTree Tobacco\nThe Cahuilla Indians used the leaves interchangeably with other tobacco species in hunting rituals and as a poultice to treat swellings\, bruises\, cuts\, wounds\, boils\, sores\, inflamed throat\, and swollen glands. It does not contain nicotine. \nIt contains anabasine\, a similar compound\, which is highly toxic to humans and animals. It is more toxic than nicotine. Ingestion of the leaves can be fatal. It is being investigated for use as a biofuel. All parts of this plant are toxic. Used as an insecticide. Do not smoke. \nElderberry\nThe blue or purple berries are gathered and made into elderberry wine\, jam\, syrup\, and pies. The entire flower cluster can be dipped in batter and fried while petals can be eaten raw or made into a fragrant and tasty tea. Spit out the seeds. Elderflower water is also used in perfumes and sweets. \nMost agree that they do need to be cooked if you are going to eat more than just a few out of hand. That’s because they have a small amount of cyanide producing glycosides\, which are released upon digestion. Fully ripe black berries are not toxic and you can eat as many as you like. Boiling or baking takes care of any “toxic” issue as does drying raw berries. \nDirections:\nRosewood Trailhead\n398 Regal Oak Ct.\nThousand Oaks\, CA 91320 \nFrom the 101\nVentu Park exit\, South (toward ocean).\nRight on Lynn Road for 1000′.\nLeft on Regal Oak Ct. for 1/3 mi.\nPark on the street \nHike Distance: 3.0 miles\nGain: 800′\nDistribution: Most of the incline occurs in the first half\, which is a continuous climb. \nDifficulty: Easy Intermediate.\nShape: Out and back.\nPace: approx. 2.0 mph.\nTrail Type: Double track\, single track.\nDuration: 3.5 hours\nDogs: Dogs must be kept on leash.\nRestrooms: No\nDrinking Fountains: No.\nParking: Free along the street. \nWhat to bring\n1 liter of water for every 3 miles.\nHiking shoes/boots. Not required\, but recommended.\nFlashlight or headlamp.\nSunscreen and/or hat as needed. \nFAQ\nHiking Plus Page Links\nDisclaimer / Release of Liability

SUMMARY:Happy Camp - Suitable for beginners
DESCRIPTION:Beginner\, 5 miles\, 500′ gain. Bug spray recommended.\nThis hike is entirely fire-road and is almost completely flat. Some of this trail is sandy\, so walking it at times can be more difficult. There are a lot of different interesting plants on this hike. \nFrom the trail head\, we walk along the fire road next to the golf course for 1.3 miles until making a left at a junction. \nPlease be advised that from that point on\, there is a no dogs allowed sign. At some point as we continue\, the ground will become very sandy. \nThe landscape will change from dry to green\, eventually coming to a spot where sometimes you can hear the water running along the left down in a canyon. We’ll stop there to share some [snacks\, beverages](https://www.dropbox.com/s/zlfjtt05uu2bhxn/Snack and Beverage Share.pdf?dl=0)\, and have a social event for 30-60 minutes\, before turning around to head back the way we came. Please bring snacks and/or beverages to share. \nInteresting Notes:\nYou will see several plants of note\, and if you are interested\, you can look them up before the hike. I’ll mention several\, and then fully describe a couple more: \nRussian Thistle\, Black Walnut\, Caterpillar Phacelia\, White Sage\, Yucca\, Bladder Pod. \nJimson Weed\nThe plant got its name from Jamestown\, because in 1676\, Jamestown\, VA soldiers ate this plant in their salad and became psychotic for 11 days. \nThe leaves and seeds are used to make medicine. Despite serious safety concerns\, jimson weed is used to treat asthma\, cough\, flu (influenza)\, swine flu\, and nerve diseases. Some people use it as a recreational drug to cause hallucinations and a heightened sense of well-being (euphoria). All parts of Datura plants contain dangerous levels of the tropane alkaloids atropine\, hyoscyamine\, and scopolamine\, which are classified as deliriants\, or anticholinergics. \nThe risk of fatal overdose is high among uninformed users\, and many hospitalizations occur amongst recreational users who ingest the plant for its psychoactive effects. As much as a 5:1 variation can be found between plants. It contains chemicals such as atropine\, hyoscyamine\, and scopolamine. \nIngesting only a few small seeds can result in serious poisoning and may be life-threatening. Ingesting even small amounts of the plant or seeds can result in confusion\, frightening hallucinations\, the inability to urinate or sweat\, overheating\, and a rapid heart rate. \nDepending on the amount ingested\, these troubling symptoms can last hours to many days\, and in some cases can lead to death. Touching he plant can cause dermatitis. \nCastor Bean\nOne of the most poisonous plants in the world. \nThe seeds contain ricin\, one of the most poisonous naturally occurring substances known. Perhaps just one milligram of ricin can kill an adult. Walter White made a poison cigarette by putting in ricin\, in the series Breaking Bad. \nThe symptoms of human poisoning begin within a few hours of ingestion. If death has not occurred in 3-5 days\, the victim usually recovers. The seed causes skin irritation at the contact point. It is said that just one seed can kill a child. \nIn 1978\, ricin was used to assassinate Georgi Markov in 1978\, a Bulgarian journalist who spoke out against the Bulgarian government. He was stabbed with the point of an umbrella while waiting at a bus stop near Waterloo Station in London. They found a perforated metallic pellet embedded in his leg that had presumably contained the ricin toxin. \nCastor beans are pressed to extract castor oil which is used for medicinal purposes. Ricin does not partition into the oil because it is water-soluble\, therefore\, castor oil does not contain ricin\, provided that no cross-contamination occurred during its production. \nUsed in bone marrow transplants\, cancer therapies\, AIDS treatment\, and can selectively destroy neurons by injecting ricin into nerves. \nDirections:\nHappy Camp\n15100 Happy Camp Canyon Rd.\nMoorpark\, CA 93021\n34.311460\,-118.866110 \nFrom the 118 and from the 101:\nHead to towards the intersection of I-118 and CA-23.\nExit 19A Princeton Ave.\, turn right (north) if coming from the east\, left coming from CA-23.\nPrinceton Ave. north for 0.2 miles.\nLeft on Campus Park Dr. for 0.4 miles and continue on Happy Camp Canyon Rd. for 0.7 miles.\nFollow signs to Rustic Canyon golf course.\nPark on the right in gravel lot\, just before golf course paved lot. Do not park in the paved golf course lot\, it has a gate that closes at sunset. \nThe Hike\nDistance: 5 miles\, 3 1/2 hours\nElevation Gain: 500′\nDifficulty: Fit Beginner\nPace: 2.0 mph\nDogs: No. A sign half-way says no dogs. I’m not the dog enforcer\, so bring a dog at your own risk.\nRestrooms/Drinking Fountains: Yes\, inside the golf course clubhouse at the start\, but likely closed after dark.\nParking: Free in the gravel lot next to the paved golf course lot.\nTrail: Fire Road and some with powdered sand. \nWhat to Bring:\n1-2 liters of water.\nSnacks and/or beverages to share\nHiking shoes preferred\, but athletic shoes will be OK.
