SUMMARY:Limekiln Canyon Lollipop - Suitable for beginners
DESCRIPTION:4 mi\, 500′ gain\, beginner\nEasier option: 1.5 mi\, 125′ gain\, beginner. \nThis is a beginner hike on the beautiful Limekiln trail. \nThis hike is a slight lollipop\, (the shape of the route). There are no extended inclines\, however there are about 5 bumps in the trail with 25-40′ gains\, about 35-65 steps each. This is something a beginner would be able to handle\, but these bumps will get the blood pumping\, as they are like climbing up to 4 flights of stairs. There is nothing wrong with pausing for a breather while tackling these bumps in the trail. \nThe trail varies between asphalt\, gravel fire road\, single tracker\, tree covered\, hilly\, roadside\, wooded\, open air\, and strolls through the park. \nWe’ll enter Limekiln Canyon\, where we’ll first encounter a heavily wooded park with large pine trees lining the trail and blocking out the sun. After about 0.2 miles\, there will be a split. We can go either way because they rejoin after about 100 yards\, but for this route\, we’ll go left. \nAfter another half mile\, the route makes a turn to the right. Those that want the super-easy route should continue straight for 100 yards to a log\, where they can wait about 45 min for the rest of us to return for the social event. \nThe rest of the group will follow the trail to the right and continue for about 1.2 miles. We’ll reach Sesnon Blvd.\, travel about 20 yards west\, and head back in on a different trail. \nAfter several hundred yards\, we’ll reconnect with the original trail for the return. \nJust before we complete the last 3/4 mile\, we’ll turn right instead of left. After about 100 yards\, we’ll find a great spot with a giant fallen tree trunk to have a social event snack and beverage share. \nAfter about 30-60 minutes\, we’ll continue the last 3/4 mile back to our cars. Those that don’t want to stick around are welcome to head back to their cars by any route they choose\, but I’ll take a few splits to the left and cover some different trails\, each that returns back to the original trail after several hundred yards. \nThere will be a couple creek crossings\, where one will use a few stepping stones to avoid getting wet. Click HERE for route. \nInteresting Notes\nHere are a couple plants you are sure to see on this hike: \nCalifornia Buckwheat\nWhen the white flowers turn a rusty brown\, they can be crushed into a powder\, mixed with water\, and baked into bread. The black seeds in the flower heads are also edible. Don’t touch the white flowers if bees are around because they won’t like it and may attack. A cold tea made from the leaves has been used to treat stomachaches and headaches. A warm tea made from the roots has been used to treat colds. The stems are stiff and flexible\, so they have been used by Indians as piercing utensils. \nLaurel Sumac\nRed stems and outline along leaves. The dried flower bunches look like small trees\, and are used by model railroad builders as such\, after being dyed green. Laurel sumac is sensitive to cold and does not tolerate freezing conditions. Orange growers in the early history of southern California used to pick places to plant their oranges based on where laurel sumac was growing because this indicated it would not get too cold for oranges if laurel sumac could grow there. For some\, the sap will irritate their skin just like poison oak\, causing blisters. Also called “Taco Plant”. \nDirections:\nLimekiln Canyon Trail\nPorter Ranch\, CA 91326 \nFrom the 118\nExit Tampa Ave (3 miles east of the Topanga Canyon exit) and head north for 1000′.\nLeft (west) on Rinaldi St. for 1000′.\nTrailhead on the right (north).\nPark on either side of the street. \nThe Hike\nDistance: 4 miles\nElevation Gain: 500′\nDifficulty: Easy\nPace: 2.5 mph\nDogs: Yes\nRestrooms: No\nDrinking Fountains: No\nParking: Free on either side of the street in front of the trail head.\nTrail: Varied. TO VIEW THE WILD FLOWERS AND CELEBRATE CINCO DE MAYO AFTERWARDS \nBy May 5th\, the area around Figueroa Mountain should be in full bloom since the higher elevations bloom later than the lower valleys. If not\, the views along the way will make for a great ride. Half the route will have us on a single track paved road\, while the other half will be on a dirt forest service road. SUMMARY:Santa Susana Stage Road - Beginer hike but the Devils in the details
DESCRIPTION:Details\nThis is a beginner hike with a tad bit of challenge due to gains and a tad bit of scrambling and bush whacking. \n*** Safety Note: Rain or Extreme Heat at trailhead cancels hikes.\nMeetup Time: 7:15 A.M. (We hit the trail at 7:30) \nDISTANCE: 5 miles – out and back \nGAIN: 863 ft \nRATED: Beginner + for a little bit of rock scrambling and slight bush whacking. \nHIKE DURATION: About 2 ½ to 3 hours (including a 20-minute snacky time!) \nDESCRIPTION: The Santa Susana Pass is a narrow gap in the Santa Susana Mountains that separates the San Fernando Valley from Simi Valley. In the mid-19th century\, the Santa Susana Pass became an important transportation route for wagons and stagecoaches traveling between Los Angeles and points north. \nThe stagecoaches and wagons would have to make a sketchy journey down the Devils slide\, an angular rock formation located within the pass. This was so treacherous horses were usually blindfolded and chains were used to augment brakes on the steep descent. Passengers debarked and walked\, as opposed to risking gravity and angular momentum. The deep ruts made by the wagons on the ‘Devil’s Slide’ section are still visible. \nWe will be hiking up the Devils Slide to a overlook where you can see the angle of the Devils Slide and an some breathtaking views of the pass and …uh…the industrial buildings and power lines in the distance. There are a couple of shady Oaks we can park under for Snacky time\, then we will be making our way back down to the to the Devils slide and once back to the bottom a little loop back to the trail head. \nBRING: Strong shoes\, (most of this trail is in the open with little or no shade) Poles will be useful for some the technical areas.; snack; a hat; !!sunscreen!!\, bug spray / bug net (in case). 3 liters of liquids (2L water/ 1-liter electrolytes\, i.e.\, Gatorade). \nADVENTURE PASS: No \n**MEET AT: (**Google GPS Coordinates: 34°14’58.8″N 118°37’10.9″W) The Andora Ave Trail head is in a neighborhood\, so please be quiet and respectful of the locals. Meet at the picnic tables at the trail head. \nBathrooms: Pitt Toilet at the Trail head. \nDogs: OK\, if well behaved around other dogs/ people with hiking poles and on a leash. \nLeaders: Paul H\, and Gary S.

SUMMARY:Wilderness Access Day - Black Star Canyon
DESCRIPTION:Let’s enjoy another Open Access Day! This is where we get to explore trails that are normally closed off to the public. The plan is to a loop that’s 3.5 to 4 miles with around 550 ft. of elevation gain. Since this is shorter\, the plan is to take our time and explore. \nYou don’t have to register on the LetsGoOutside site\, but here is the link for more info: https://letsgooutside.org/activities/2023/05/06/wilderness-access-day-black-star-canyon-53/ \nBlack Star Canyon\, part of OCParks’ Irvine Ranch Open Space\, offers pleasant introductory trails for beginner hikers and families as well as challenging experiences for seasoned trail users. Designated trails are available for self-guided hiking\, biking and equestrian use. A variety of trail loops offer extended exploration throughout the canyons. Take time to explore the local plant communities and beautiful scenery in easy 30-minute walks or take in 7+ miles in a strong cardio trek. \nPre-registration is not required for this event\, though it is available on the website. If you need driving directions\, use the online registration to receive a map and instructions for getting to the Baker Canyon Staging Area. Parking is limited on Black Star Canyon Road and carpooling is strongly recommended. You will not be required to sign-in upon arrival\, though an information booth with trail maps and suggested routes will be available in the staging area. \nPlease note that you are asked to adhere to the following measures during the activity in order to participate: \n\nArrive with all necessary equipment to keep you safe on the trail\, including water\, proper attire\, and footwear\, first aid\, medications\, etc.\nRestrooms will be available\, but facilities will not be sanitized for each individual.\nYou may be prevented from participating if you do not adhere to the above protocols.\n\nAdditionally\, in an effort to respect and protect all employees\, volunteers\, and participants\, please do not sign up or attend if you are not feeling well\, exhibiting any symptoms of illness or have been in recent contact with someone who was ill.\nParticipants are required to stay on designated trails at all times. In addition to being a rare and sensitive habit\, the Irvine Ranch Open Space is under strict protection. There are often unseen dangers just off-trail including\, but not limited to: mountain lions\, poison oak\, ticks\, poisonous spiders\, and venomous snakes. OC Parks Rangers may issue citations for visitors found off-trail so for your safety\, please stay on the designated paths during your stay in Black Star Canyon. SUMMARY:Hike at O'Neill Regional Park - Live Oak + Vista Trail
DESCRIPTION:The hike we will be doing is approximately 5 miles with 870 ft. of elevation gain. \nWe will begin at the Live Oak Trail trailhead. This is where you will see on the map that the Live Oak Trail hits the paved road\, right off of the parking lot marked P. This is the parking lot closest to the Edna Spaulding Trail. (There should also be someone at the gate when you come in that can direct you where to go.) \nWe start by going up Live Oak Trail and up Vista Trail. We will take back Hoffman Homestead Trail\, Coyote Trail\, and back to Live Oak. Several hikers have commented on the wild flowers still in bloom along these trails. And with more rain coming our way it should still be nice and green as well. We are gonna do this hike in reverse as the original road to the starting point on AllTrails is closed. SUMMARY:Hike at Whiting Ranch Wilderness Park - Borrego Trail & Red Rock Canyon
DESCRIPTION:The total mileage for this hike is 4.5 miles with about 460 ft. of elevation gain. \nWe will start at the trail head of the Borrego Trail\, which is right off of the parking lot. This is where we will meet. We will head up the Borrego Trail until we get to the Red Rock Trail. We take this into the canyon. SUMMARY:Mission Point The Hard Way
DESCRIPTION:O’Melveny Park spreads over 672 acres\, second on the list of largest parks within the City of Los Angeles\, right after Griffith Park. Noted for its picture-perfect picnic grounds with white fences and towering eucalyptus trees\, O’Melveny Park also challenges hikers with several miles of steep\, backcountry fire roads and primitive trails. \nNormally our hike to the highest spot in the San Fernando Valley known as Mission Point uses the steep Grotto Trail or my alternate no-name one used last year to get to the top. Our return would use the Bee Canyon trail \nHowever\, this time we will explore some of those little used and overgrown trails we have seen crisscrossing our other paths. Instead of returning via Bee Canyon\, we’ll use the Pipleline Trail (an alternate to Neon Way) \nTrekking poles recommended for this one: https://www.hikingwithdean.com/shop/amazon-top-10/ \nHike is about 5 miles with 1500 ft total ascent and rated DIFFICULT due to terrain. See the Hike Rating Guide \nHistorical Note \nO’Melveny Park takes its name from the well-known family of Los Angeles lawyers who once owned a gentleman’s ranch here. John O’Melveny bought the land in 1941 and called it CJ Ranch. Cattle roamed the hills\, a citrus orchard was planted\, and family members enjoyed spending weekends roaming the mountains. Although areas near the ranch were oil-rich\, exploration on the ranch was unsuccessful. The O’Melvenys deeded half their ranch to Los Angeles\, and the city purchased the rest \nDirections \nHead for O’Melveny Park using the map pin and Google Maps. The parking lot is small and fills up quickly. Plan on parking on neighboring streets. \nTrail statistics are approximate. For safety purposes always assume they are underestimated. SUMMARY:Angel Vista - Easy Intermediate
DESCRIPTION:3.0 miles\, 800′ gain\, easy-intermediate. \nLet’s enjoy the gorgeous sunset and fun loaded potluck picnic at the beautiful Angel Vista! \nThis hike is rated easy-intermediate because it is a continuous incline for 1.5 miles. This isn’t real steep\, but it is continuous\, and many beginner hikers have indicated this should be rated intermediate. \nThat said\, there is no reason a fit beginner cannot complete this hike. If needed\, just stop and rest along the way\, even if it’s every 50 steps. This is not a conditioning hike\, it is a social hike\, and you really can’t get lost. \nThe only junction is 200 yards before the top\, where we’ll turn right to complete the climb. \nAt the top\, there is a picnic table and 360 degree incredible views that are especially wonderful at night. We’ll have a snack-share social event at the top for 30-60 minutes before heading back the way we came. Please bring some food and drink to share\, and utensils of your item requires it. \nThe top has been known to sometimes be very cool and windy. Please bring something to put on in case it is that way at the top. \nInteresting Notes \nTree Tobacco \nThe Cahuilla Indians used the leaves interchangeably with other tobacco species in hunting rituals and as a poultice to treat swellings\, bruises\, cuts\, wounds\, boils\, sores\, inflamed throat\, and swollen glands. It does not contain nicotine. \nIt contains anabasine\, a similar compound\, which is highly toxic to humans and animals. It is more toxic than nicotine. Ingestion of the leaves can be fatal. It is being investigated for use as a biofuel. All parts of this plant are toxic. Used as an insecticide. Do not smoke. \nElderberry \nThe blue or purple berries are gathered and made into elderberry wine\, jam\, syrup\, and pies. The entire flower cluster can be dipped in batter and fried while petals can be eaten raw or made into a fragrant and tasty tea. Spit out the seeds. Elderflower water is also used in perfumes and sweets. \nMost agree that they do need to be cooked if you are going to eat more than just a few out of hand. That’s because they have a small amount of cyanide producing glycosides\, which are released upon digestion. Fully ripe black berries are not toxic and you can eat as many as you like. SUMMARY:Zuma Loop\, Ocean and Canyon View Trails ~ Gentler Intermediate
DESCRIPTION:I pre-hiked the trail this morning. The name “Zuma” is derived from the Chumash language and means “abundance.” There is an absolute abundance of beautiful and spectacular wildflowers engulfing the entire area and it appears that there was no impact from the Woolsey fire other than a few remnants of burnt trees. \nWe will start to hike the Zuma Loop trail and continue on to Ocean View trail. Then\, we descend down the Canyon View trail to the parking lot.\nThis hike is five miles with an elevation gain/loss of approximate 1000-1200 feet. \nDirections:\nFrom Santa Monica\, Thousand Oaks\, and the San Fernando Valley\, drive west on Pacific Coast Highway somewhat less than a mile past Kanan\, and turn right (north) on Bonsall Drive. Continue north into the dirt lot at the end. \nFrom Oxnard and points north and west\, turn left on Bonsall to the end. SUMMARY:8 Mile Intermediate Hike ~ Newton Canyon to Buzzards Roost - Wildflowers?
DESCRIPTION:Let’s go see what’s in bloom in one of our favorite hiking spots\, Newton Canyon to Buzzard’s Roost! \nThis area was burned over in the Woolsey fire\, but spring brings wildflowers\, freely flowing water\, and a few waterfalls\, including the Upper Newton Canyon falls. We’ve seen lupines\, poppies\, lilies\, and a real rarity – Indian Chief\, related to Indian Paintbrush\, but much rarer here in So Cal. Hopefully the Phlox and Phaecelia are already starting to poke their heads out\, and Shooting Stars are starting to appear\, so let’s go see what else is blooming. \nFrom the Kanan Rd trailhead\, we’ll jump on the Backbone Trail for a cruise over and up to the peak of the Zuma Ridge Trail at Buzzard’s Roost. On the ridge\, we’ll have a great view of Zuma Beach and the Pacific. On our way there\, we’ll cross a free-flowing creek\, pass under a scorched oak canopy\, and come out to a beautiful view of Upper Newton Falls spilling down a cliff to the valley floor. \nThis is an out and back hike at a total of 8 miles\, with 1600′ total elevation gain\, most of it leading to the turnaround point with the ocean view at Buzzards Roost. Even the beginning and end of the hike are mostly exposed after the fire. The middle portion is completely exposed; prepare accordingly. \nDirections: \nFrom the 101\, go south (toward beaches) on Kanan Road about 8 miles to just before the third tunnel (T1). The first half mile contains a 500 ft elevation gain. The next couple miles has adds another few hundred feet along rolling hills. After that its all downhill on the Phantom Trail into Liberty Canyon. We will exit the Preserve on Liberty Canyon Trail and return to Agoura Rd along residential Liberty Canyon Rd. \nHike is rated DIFFICULT due to terrain and will be about 6 miles with 1\,600 feet of total ascent. SUMMARY:Tapo Canyon Tar Pits - Easy Intermediate
DESCRIPTION:5.4 miles\, 1050′ gain\, Easy Intermediate\nThis hike is one of the most beautiful hikes in Simi Valley. There are 3 extended inclines\, about 1000 steps each\, on fire road. They are not especially steep\, but they do continue for some time\, which is why it is rated “Easy Intermediate.” There are also several small hills of 100 steps or less. \nThe extended inclines will get the blood pumping during this lollipop hike. We’ll be moving through the famous Tapo Canyon and visiting natural tar pits that bubble up from the ground. \nThe first pit is really a puddle that looks like someone spilled a couple 55-gallon drums of tar that was later contained using a spill rope. The next two are a little larger\, again\, contained by spill ropes to keep the sticky black tar from getting on the trail. \nFrom the trail head\, we’ll start on a leisurely stroll for about 0.6 miles\, followed by a steady climb for the next mile\, completing the first extended incline. \nWe’ll turn left at the junction\, climb a small hill of a couple hundred steps\, and then head down for 1.5 miles. \nWe’ll make a right turn down a smaller trail and go for about 100 yards until we reach the tar pits. After looking around for a bit\, we’ll head back\, and after 0.25 miles\, we’ll come to another junction where we will stop and share snacks and beverages. \nFor the return\, we’ll turn left and there will be a steady climb for about 3/4 of a mile to another junction. We’ll turn left again and return down for about 1.4 miles to complete the lollipop. \nEasy option (no host): 3 miles\, 300′ gain.\nPark at 5079 Westwood St\, Simi Valley\, CA 93063. Follow Cottonwood Dr/Yosemite Ave south (down) 1000′ to the trailhead. Enter and turn immediately left. After 350′\, there is a split. It doesn’t matter which you take. The right (upper) is single-track\, the left (lower) is fire road. After ½ mile\, the two trails merge into the fire road. After 600′\, you arrive at the tar pits. Keep going another 600′\, left at the dead end\, and 1/3rd mile to the social event location. DESCRIPTION:On this hike\, we’ll repeat our December hike where we took Las Llajas Canyon to a climb up a sweeping trail to the abandoned Coquina mine and visit the steam shovel that has been rusting patiently there for decades. According to Scott\, the wildflowers are great in Las Llajas Canyon right now. This is also the hike that I broke my thumb on 6 months ago\, almost to the day\, and still recovering. \nNancy has also posted a Thursday hike\, so please only sign up for one\, and withdraw from the other so people on the waitlist can join. \nThis hike will be 6 miles\, with 1\,350 feet of climb and descent. There will be no sweep. This is an in- and-out-hike on same trail. \nPlease review our guidelines to participate in our hikes. We are requiring proof of vaccination to join a hike. SUMMARY:Gentler / Beginner: Kanan Dume to Latigo - 5 miles
DESCRIPTION:This is an easier hike for Thursday\, another has also been posted\, please only sign up for one hike. This hike is 5 miles and will take us on a less-traveled but quite beautiful part of the 67-mile Backbone Trail\, which runs through the Santa Monica Mountains National Recreation Area from Will Rogers State Park in the east to Point Mugu in the west. \n\n\nThe route begins at Kanan Dume Road and goes southerly a short distance\, allowing us to cross over the southernmost tunnel (Tunnel 1) above Kanan Dume Road. We then proceed easterly roughly 2.2 miles and up 600 feet\, gradually winding our way up and through Latigo Canyon\, turning around at Latigo Canyon Road\, and returning to the cars. This hike can include a short jog up to the ridgeline for spectacular Pacific Ocean views. There will probably still be some wildflowers along this route. \nThis hike has a short but steep climb at the beginning\, where we will help and encourage beginning hikers (who still should be prepared for a 150′ climb). \nThe terrain is a mix of single and double-file trail with occasional stretches of loose rock and gravel (you may want to bring trekking poles). The majority of our out and back hike is wooded and shaded canyon trails\, offering periodic glimpses of the Pacific. A deep “V” into a shaded cleft\, with another 450′ of descent and climb will complete the elevation loss and gain. \nThe total distance for this hike will be approximately 5 miles with 600 feet of elevation gain. \nDirections: \nFrom the 101 – exit at the Kanan Road exit and drive south (toward the ocean) 7.8 miles\, going through two of the three tunnels on this road (which changes name to Kanan Dume Road). Turn right into the “Backbone Trail” parking area\, just before entering the third tunnel. \nFrom PCH – turn up South Kanan Dume Road. Drive 4.4 miles from PCH\, going through one tunnel\, and then turn left into the “Backbone Trail” parking area\, almost immediately after coming out of the tunnel. SUMMARY:Limekiln Canyon Lollipop - Suitable for beginners
DESCRIPTION:4 mi\, 500′ gain\, beginner\nEasier option: 1.5 mi\, 125′ gain\, beginner. \nThis is a beginner hike on the beautiful Limekiln trail. \nThis hike is a slight lollipop\, (the shape of the route). There are no extended inclines\, however there are about 5 bumps in the trail with 25-40′ gains\, about 35-65 steps each. This is something a beginner would be able to handle\, but these bumps will get the blood pumping\, as they are like climbing up to 4 flights of stairs. There is nothing wrong with pausing for a breather while tackling these bumps in the trail. \nThe trail varies between asphalt\, gravel fire road\, single tracker\, tree covered\, hilly\, roadside\, wooded\, open air\, and strolls through the park. \nWe’ll enter Limekiln Canyon\, where we’ll first encounter a heavily wooded park with large pine trees lining the trail and blocking out the sun. After about 0.2 miles\, there will be a split. We can go either way because they rejoin after about 100 yards\, but for this route\, we’ll go left. \nAfter another half mile\, the route makes a turn to the right. Those that want the super-easy route should continue straight for 100 yards to a log\, where they can wait about 45 min for the rest of us to return for the social event. \nThe rest of the group will follow the trail to the right and continue for about 1.2 miles. We’ll reach Sesnon Blvd.\, travel about 20 yards west\, and head back in on a different trail. \nAfter several hundred yards\, we’ll reconnect with the original trail for the return. \nJust before we complete the last 3/4 mile\, we’ll turn right instead of left. After about 100 yards\, we’ll find a great spot with a giant fallen tree trunk to have a social event snack and beverage share. \nAfter about 30-60 minutes\, we’ll continue the last 3/4 mile back to our cars. Those that don’t want to stick around are welcome to head back to their cars by any route they choose\, but I’ll take a few splits to the left and cover some different trails\, each that returns back to the original trail after several hundred yards. \nThere will be a couple creek crossings\, where one will use a few stepping stones to avoid getting wet. Click HERE for route. \nInteresting Notes\nHere are a couple plants you are sure to see on this hike: \nCalifornia Buckwheat\nWhen the white flowers turn a rusty brown\, they can be crushed into a powder\, mixed with water\, and baked into bread. The black seeds in the flower heads are also edible. Don’t touch the white flowers if bees are around because they won’t like it and may attack. A cold tea made from the leaves has been used to treat stomachaches and headaches. A warm tea made from the roots has been used to treat colds. The stems are stiff and flexible\, so they have been used by Indians as piercing utensils. \nLaurel Sumac\nRed stems and outline along leaves. The dried flower bunches look like small trees\, and are used by model railroad builders as such\, after being dyed green. Laurel sumac is sensitive to cold and does not tolerate freezing conditions. Orange growers in the early history of southern California used to pick places to plant their oranges based on where laurel sumac was growing because this indicated it would not get too cold for oranges if laurel sumac could grow there. For some\, the sap will irritate their skin just like poison oak\, causing blisters. ( We hit the trail at 7:30) \nDISTANCE: 9.9 miles – Loop \nGAIN: 2\,795 ft \nRATED: Strenuous mainly for the almost 10-mile Distance and the 2\,795 ‘ gain. Not a hike for Beginners! \nHIKE DURATION: About 5 1/2 to 6 hours (including a 20-minute snacky time!) \nDESCRIPTION: Mount Lukens is a mountain located in the San Gabriel Mountains\, just north of the city of Glendale\, California. It is the highest point in the city of Los Angeles\, with an elevation of 5\,074 feet (1\,547 meters) above sea level. At the end of the day\, it’s just one of many peaks in the San Gabriel Mountains\, trying to get attention by being all “look at me\, I’m so tall and imposing…. Climb me!”. \nThe plan is to hike the counterclockwise loop up to the summit of this behemoth. The trail will share some of its ancient secrets as we pass through the lower slopes that consist of Precambrian-age schist and gneiss\, which are some of the oldest rocks in the region. As we gain altitude above the lower slopes\, we will be passing through younger (only 100 million years) Cretaceous granite with metamorphic outcroppings of shist\, gneiss\, and amphibolite scattered around for extra intrusive spice. \nOnce we reach the summit if we are lucky enough for a clear day\, we should be available to see from one end of the San Fernando Valley to the Pacific\, and perhaps even Catalina. As we sit at the summit and admire the curvature of the horizon\, we will break for snacky time! So\, bring something good to eat and recharge your body. From this point it’s all downhill to the parking lot where we started ( more or less). \nBRING: Strong shoes\, dress in layers might be chilly in the morning\, (most of this trail is in the open with little or no shade) Poles will be useful for some the technical areas.; snack lunch; a hat; !!sunscreen!!\, bug spray / bug net (in case). 3 liters of liquids (2L water/ 1-liter electrolytes\, i.e.\, Gatorade). \nADVENTURE PASS: YES. SUMMARY:Substitute Hike for the Heat - Fish Canyon Water Hike to Piano Box Canyon
DESCRIPTION:******* RAIN FALLING AT TRAILHEAD CANCELS ALL HIKES ******* \nSaturday\, May 13\, 2023 – Time to get your feet wet with 36 Stream Crossings! That’s right kids\, we are hiking Fish Canyon to Piano Box Canyon (and maybe beyond a bit up into the Narrows). \nFish Canyon is a BKS Substitute hike for the previously scheduled Mt Lukens hike because of the forecast 90+ degree weather this Saturday. \nThis substitute hike will give you a great opportunity to stay COOL while hiking Saturday – and you will have to entertain yourself with about 36 separate creek crossing over the fairly fast flowing\, fairly high flow rate creek! We just pre-hiked it\, and its easy enough and plenty safe enough to cross. It is not possible to cross the creek without walking through it – so you WILL get wet – AT LEAST UP TO YOUR KNEES! Shorts or pants that you can roll up during the crossings are advised\, as are water-friendly footwear that you can cross through the creek with and still hike with. Be advised there is a considerable amount of poison oak/poison ivy along the trail\, so take that into account regarding long pants. \nMany of you have previously been up Fish Canyon\, but a LOT has changed after this winter’s rain and storm activity. You won’t recognize parts of the canyon compared to how it was. LOTS of the old asphalt road and the dirt trails are highly eroded\, or GONE! The trail is in poor shape in many places\, and because of the heavy erosion\, the normally good trail is quite rocky and slower to hike. We’ll have to walk up the road in the water in some cases\, and bushwhack a bit to find portions of the trail since parts have been destroyed. For anyone who hasn’t been up there since this winter\, you will be in for a surprise and many NEW landscapes and topography. \nDistance: ~ 8ish Miles total (Min 4 miles in and back out) \nGain: ~ 500′ (mostly the road back to the car from the trailhead) \nHiking Time: ~ 4+ hours \nRating: Moderate (mainly for an uphill stretch of highway at the end along the road\, returning to the cars from the gate where we park. \nNote – You should to be in good general condition to enjoy this hike. \nNormal Hike Description:\nThis is a beautiful area containing 37 types of endangered species. It is prime yellow-legged frog and Arroyo Toad Habitat. Bring your camera. Not only is the area beautiful\, but you might see some of the endangered species along the way. Please stay on the trails here\, and watch where you step during the stream crossings. \nThe hike starts on an abandoned asphalt road\, moves onto a dirt road at the north end of Castaic Lake and follows Fish Canyon. The only major hill is the asphalt road coming back up to the cars\, the trail is fairly level the rest of the way. The trail through Fish Canyon is interspersed with portions of what is left of the old cement road from the 1930s up into the Canyon. \nThen we split off the main trail for the trail to Piano Box Canyon\, a beautiful single track wooded trail. We will snack and rest in Piano box and have ample time to enjoy the canyon walls of reddish/orange rock before returning. \nMeet your leader at the Trail Head (Trailhead address below) – or put this # into Google Maps (34.6022\, -118.6707):\n37773 Templin Highway\, Angeles National Forest\, Castaic\, CA 91384 \nDirections to Trail head (about 30 mins) from SCV / SFV areas:\nTake the I-5 Freeway North from Santa Clarita. About 6 miles north of Lake Hughes/Castaic\, exit at Templin Highway EAST. Turn right at bottom of FWY off ramp.\nFollow Templin Hwy East (a curvy road) straight (i.e. do not turn off it). Drive about 10 mins max\, all the way until it ends at a closed white gate/ concrete barrier. You can park along the road beside it\, leave nothing showing in your vehicle. \nMeeting Time:\nMeet at the white gate at the trail head at 7:00AM for an 7:15AM SHARP departure down to the trailhead and Fish Canyon.\nNote: No Adventure Pass needed and No bathrooms at trailhead. \nBring:\nLunch/ snack\, lots of water (2 – 3 liters)\, and a camera. \nWear:\nLayered clothing\, hat\, sunscreen\, shoes with good tread\, long pants in case there is poison oak or ticks about. \nThere are about 18 separate water crossings in each direction – so be prepared for about 36 total water crossings IN THE WATER. There is no option to cross the creeks without getting wet up to about your knees! \nDogs: NOT RECOMMENDED. The creek is moving fast with moderately heavy flow rates. There are a total of 36 creek crossings total and in many places there is no trail left\, or is highly eroded. What is left of the trail is very rocky and will be difficult for a dog to walk on. The trail is missing in quite a few places\, and there are sections with tall grasses that have very little visibility regarding snakes and/or ticks. Highlights during this stroll through a wooded canyon include ocean views. From here we’ll hook up with dirt Mulholland and head east to Garapito Canyon \nWe’ll then descend the narrow Garapito Trail cutting a sinuous course through mature chaparral — mostly mountain mahogany and ceanothus up to 20 feet tall. The blossoms of the ceanothus exude an attractive wild honey scent in spring. Tunneling through the tall brush\, the trail eventually switchbacks down to the sycamore-shaded canyon bottom\, crossing two forks of Garapito Creek and then contours a short distance over to an east fork. \nAfter rising out of Garapito Canyon Eagle Rock will come into view. The most impressive landmark in all of Topanga State Park\, it will afford us an airy perch overlooking the upper watershed of Santa Ynez Canyon and the ocean beyond. We will snack and explore on this impressive sandstone rock covered with crevices and caves. \nAfter that we’ll take the Cheney Ridge trail and across Summerhill Ranchback to Santa Maria Canyon to complete the loop. \n\n\nHIKE IS ABOUT 12 MILES WITH ABOUT 2\,500 FT TOTAL ASCENT AND IS RATED DIFFICULT. This is a really popular area so will need to start earlier plus the weather is starting to ease towards summer now. If you haven’t been to the area before it’s a great place to hike. Perfect time of year as its still green with wildflowers and still a cool breeze. This is a gradual incline so you can enjoy the scenery more and get in more conversation without having to stop to breath. lol Parking can fill up fast so if that’s the case kim suggest parking on kimball Rd which is off FootHill Rd. SUMMARY:Mother's Day Hike at Laguna Coast Wilderness Park - Nix Nature Center
DESCRIPTION:Come join us for a Mother’s Day hike! \nThe hike we will be doing will be around 5 miles long with 875 ft. of elevation gain. This will be a loop starting at the parking lot of Nix Nature Center. As you will see on the map\, this is at the main park entrance off of the 133 (Little Sycamore Canyon Staging Area). Please reference the map for a detailed location as there aren’t many streets to list for directions. \nThe hike we will be doing will start on the Little Sycamore Canyon Trail. Then we will turn left onto the Serrano Ridge Trail\, then another left onto the Camarillo Canyon Trail. DESCRIPTION:Happy Mother’s Day to all beings who have a motherly heart!\nLet’s celebrate this special day with the beautiful Mother nature and great friends 🥂♥️ \n3.5 miles\, 700′ gain\, Easy Intermediate.\nEasy Option: 2.4 miles\, 285′ gain\, Fit Beginner. \nWe’ll start by entering the Los Padres trail\, through a spooky oak covered section\, then move through until we come to a dead end. We’ll turn right\, and climb up to another junction\, where we’ll turn right onto the Los Robles trail. \nAfter 500 feet\, we’ll take a split off to the right and continue along the Vista Loop until we come to a bench at the top. Then we’ll start heading down\, and when we come to a picnic table\, we’ll stop for a social event. Let’s call it the “Giant’s Picnic Table” because of the thick pieces of wood used. \nEasy Option: In the reverse direction as the rest of the group\, go 350′ to the end of Los Padres Dr.\, left on S. Moorpark Rd. for 1000′. Enter the trail and follow it for about a mile. It will curve left and you will arrive at the social event. \nThis is a pot luck picnic. Please also bring something to eat and drink\, and a little extra to share. If your item requires it\, bring plates and utensils to share. \nWe’ll share snacks and drinks for 30-60 minutes\, before continuing down and around for our return. \nIf you don’t wish to stay for the entire social event\, please study the map posted with description so you are able to navigate the remainder of this trail without the host \nHike Distance: 3.5 miles\nGain: 700′\nDistribution: Most of the incline well distributed in the first half.\nDifficulty: Easy Intermediate.\nShape: Loop.\nPace: approx. 2.0 mph.\nTrail Type: Fire Road\, Single-Track\, and Double-Track.\nTrail Variations:\nSeveral extended inclines of 1000 steps.\nSeveral steep sections of 300 steps\, but no hands required.\nDuration: 3.0 hours\nDogs: Yes.\nRestrooms: No\nDrinking Fountains: No.\nParking: Free along street. \nWhat to bring: 1 liter of water for every 3 miles.\nHiking shoes/boots\nFlashlight or headlamp.\nSunscreen and/or hat as needed.\nSnacks and/or beverages to share. \nHosting \nRoute: The host knows the route. A pic of the route LINK \nNavigation: Host memory\, enhanced by GPS navigation as needed \nHike type: Social.\nWe won’t be hiking at a fast pace because this is a social hike\, not a conditioning hike. There is nothing wrong with stopping\, even if it means every 50 steps. \nStops:\nThe host may designate stopping points to let others catch up. We will stop at junctions to make sure everybody makes any turns or chooses the correct direction at splits\, else something will be used to mark the direction\, usually a large arrow made of baking soda. There may not always be a sweeper designated to be the last hiker. \nInteresting Notes\nThese are a couple plants you are likely to see on this hike:\nYucca\nWhite flowers on stalk. Stalk is often missing\, leaving only the spires from which it grows. Stalks are very strong and light\, so they make good walking sticks. Needles on end of spires. Chopped up root can be uses as shampoo or soap. Roasted root can be eaten like a potato. Illegal to remove live stick in CA.\nPronounced with short u. Dried leaves make good tinder. To eat root\, remove skin and core\, boil 15 minutes. Then fry or bake. Flowers are mildly sweet. Adam says they taste like radishes. The fruit is also edible\, but bitter if not ripe. To access fibers: Soak for a month in water\, lightly pound leaves with rock or club\, or scrape off skin. Roll between hands\, then pull and separate fibers. Weave into cordage.\nWild Cucumber\nToxic. Boil fruit in water to make spikes easy to remove. Inside is a natural luffa. Tubars (thickened part of a stem\, usually underground\, like the potato) can be crushed and thrown into water to immobilize fish.\nAlmost the entire plant is poisonous.
