SUMMARY:Hike at Caspers Wilderness Park - Bell Canyon + Oso Trail
DESCRIPTION:Let’s start early and beat the heat! \nThe hike I am planning is around 6.3 miles with about 700 ft. of elevation gain. It starts at the very end of the paved road\, the long gray strip that can be seen on the map. \nWe will begin at the Bell Canyon Trail head. We will continue onto that and then take it to the Cougar Pass trail. We will go up that and make a left on Oso Trail. Once that ends\, we will come back down Bell Canyon Trail until we hit Star Ridge Trail. We will take this to West Ridge Trail and go left. This will take us to a single track trail\, Dick Loskorn Trail. This hits Nature Loops Trail and this will take us back to the beginning. \nThis is a beautiful hike with expansive views. It is a nice and remote hike\, so you are really out there in the wilderness. \nIf you have any questions regarding the park or the trails we will be on\, please let me know! \nHere is a link to the park map: http://ocparks.com/civicax/filebank/blobdload.aspx?BlobID=8164 \nThe address is: 33401 Ortega Hwy. San Juan Capistrano\, CA 92675 \nDogs are not allowed at this park. \nParking is $5\, unless you have an OC Parks Annual Permit. If you hike a lot\, it’s totally worth it: http://ocparks.com/about/fees/pass You can buy the pass at the park.

SUMMARY:Hawk Canyon lollipop - Pot Luck hike
DESCRIPTION:4.2 miles\, 700′ gain\, easy-intermediate. \nEasier option: 2.7 miles\, 500′ gain\, fit beginner. \nThis is a pot-luck hike. We’ll be stopping at the 3/4 point by a picnic table\, so please bring food and drink to share\, any utensils your items might require. \nWe have had occasions where there were no utensils\, so it might be wise to at least bring your own. \nWe start at Conejo Canyons Trail Head\, 2010 Conejo Center Dr\, Thousand Oaks\, CA 91320. \nWe’ll hike downhill from the trailhead for 0.6 miles. \nFor the regular route\, we’ll turn left and continue uphill for 0.6 miles on the Western Plateau trail and follow the fire road around to the right at the top\, then mostly flat for about a mile\, then dropping for another 1/2 mile. \nAt the bottom and when coming to a junction\, turn right onto Hawk Canyon. Our picnic spot is 1/4 mile up Hawk Canyon at the table under the trees. \nFor the easier option\, instead of turning left at the first junction\, we’ll turn right. After 0.6 miles\, the picnic area will be on the left. \nAfter the potluck\, we’ll continue up Hawk Canyon in our clockwise loop for 0.6 mile where the trail ends back at the Western Plateau trail. Take a left up the hill back to Conejo Center Dr. For those that came on the easier option\, it’s a return the way you came. \n** If you plan on leaving before the group\, please familiarize yourself with the planned route\, which can be accessed by clicking on the below link: \nThe Hike \nDistance: 4.2 miles / 2.7 miles \nGain: 700′ / 500′ \nDistribution: Well distributed. \nDifficulty: Easy Intermediate / Fit Beginner \nShape: Lollipop. \nPace: 2.0 mph. \nTrail Type: Fire road and single track. \nTrail Variations: Rolling stroll and ramp. \nDuration: 3.5 hours \nDogs: Yes. \nRestrooms: No \nDrinking Fountains: No. \nParking: Free along street. \nWhat to bring \n1 liter of water for every 3 miles. \nSnacks and/or beverages to share \nHiking shoes preferred\, but athletic shoes will be OK. \nFlashlight or headlamp. \nSunscreen and/or hat as needed. \nInsect repellent (optional). \nHosting \nRoute: The host knows the route. A pic of the route has been posted as part of this description. \nNavigation: Host memory\, enhanced by GPS navigation as needed. \nHike type: Social. \nWe won’t be hiking at a fast pace because this is a social hike\, not a conditioning hike. There is nothing wrong with stopping\, even if it means every 50 steps. \nStops \nThe host may designate stopping points to let others catch up. This hike will include an extended stop for a snack and beverage share at the half way point. There may not always be a sweeper designated to be the last hiker. \nEach hiker is responsible for knowing their capability\, only attending events where they are able to sustain the described pace\, for keeping up with the group sufficiently enough to make the turns and not get left behind\, and for making sure the host is notified if they are going to split from the group. \nGroup separation \nSometimes hikers wish to move significantly ahead and not wait at designated stopping points. Please let the host know. They are on their own regarding route and navigation. \nDirections \nConejo Canyons Trail Head \n2010 Conejo Center Dr. \nThousand Oaks\, CA 91320 \nUS-101\, exit Ventu Park Rd\, North. \nVentu Park Rd. SUMMARY:Top of the Santa Monicas- Sandstone Peak!
DESCRIPTION:We’ll be looping around the Backbone and Mishe Mokwa Trails for 6.5 miles\, moving up approximately 1500′ as we go. \nEarly on\, we’ll pass Echo Cliffs\, where rock climbers ascend sheer cliffs\, a house sized boulder delicately balanced on a small rock beneath\, a giant split rock\, stunning giant sandstone formations\, and breathtaking views. \nSince rock scrambling will be required to get to the top of Sandstone Peak\, we will likely skip that section. \nDirections: \nDirections to the Sandstone Peak Trailhead:\nFrom Westlake Village\, exit on Westlake Blvd (CA-23 South) from the 101 Freeway\, and follow it south for several miles (approximately 7 miles) to stop sign for Mulholland West (Note: Westlake Blvd. will merge with Mulholland West before you reach the stop sign). At the stop sign\, turn right onto Mulholland (West) for about 0.4 miles. Turn right onto Little Sycamore Canyon\, which becomes Yerba Buena Road after 1.4 miles\, for 4 1/2 miles to Sandstone Peak trailhead. The Sandstone Peak lot is on the right side of the road. Look for large Sandstone Peak sign. The parking lot is above Yerba Buena Road and there is a bathroom in the parking lot. If you pass the Circle X Ranch\, you went too far. \nNote: This is a very slow driving route (narrow\, with sharp turns) and will take 20-30 minutes from the 101 to the parking lot. Give yourself plenty of time. Cell reception is marginal (at best) up there\, so we won’t be waiting on any “I’m late” calls. \nDo NOT leave anything of value in your car\, at this or any other trailhead. \nRead about The Weekday Trailblazers and our policies here:\nhttps://www.meetup.com/the-weekday-trailblazers/ \nDISCLAIMER / RELEASE OF LIABILITY \nThe hike host is a volunteer and not responsible for the group. Safety should be a priority for everyone in the group. Please treat this meet-up as hiking with a group of friends. If you become fatigued and unable to continue the hike\, it is expected you will advise the hike host of this and return to our starting point on your own. If you are able to proceed\, it is expected that you will maintain line of sight with other members of the group at all times and help to promote the group’s safety and fitness goals. \nOutdoor sports and other events we plan can be inherently dangerous and accidents may happen. By participating in any posted event\, you are taking responsibility for your own safety and well-being. The Weekday Trailblazers Meetup Group and its organizers are not trained leaders and we do not confirm the qualifications of any of its members to lead or participate in trips. All participants take full responsibility for their own actions. \nIf you choose to sign up for this or any Weekday Trailblazers Meetup event\, you are releasing the Weekday Trailblazers Meetup Group\, its organizers\, and sponsors from all liability in case of possible injuries. Your personal safety depends on your own judgment and experience. You agree that you can navigate back to your transportation by yourself\, and agree to do so if you fall behind and lose track of the main body of hikers. \nThere are no “Plus One’s” on this hike. If you want to bring someone along\, have them sign up\, and make sure they’re aware of\, and agree to\, this disclaimer.

SUMMARY:Ray Miller trail up to the fire road
DESCRIPTION:It’s still going to be a bit warm\, and humid\, but if we start at 8:30 I think we will be okay. We will go up the Ray Miller trail to the fire road and back\, about 6 miles. This is an out and back so you can go at your own pace\, but there will probably be another hike posted that will no doubt be faster than my hike. We’ll enjoy beautiful ocean views unless it’s foggy. \nLying along the brilliant blue Pacific Ocean at the west end of Malibu (just shy of Port Hueneme)\, the swelling blue ocean is rivaled in beauty by the undulating native California grasslands. On a clear day\, the Channel Islands are easily within sight\, although it is often foggy this time of year. \nMost of the trail is exposed\, bring sunscreen\, hopefully there will be some clouds. It may be mosquito season so it’s up to you whether you should bring bug repellent. \nWe’ll meet in the parking lot near the Ray Miller Trailhead (look for the brilliant yellow sign). There is a parking fee in the lot (or free with state parking pass). There is free parking on PCH just a short walk to the parking area. \nhttps://a248.e.akamai.net/secure.meetupstatic.com/photos/event/6/7/4/a/event_93326442.jpeg \nPlease review the ongoing guidelines to participate in our morning hikes. Here are some highlights and a link to the guidelines:\nhttps://www.meetup.com/The-Weekday-Trailblazers/about/\nRestrictions apply for your safety and ours:\nDon’t show up unless you’re on the “Attending” list\nNo “Plus Ones” on this hike\nNo dogs on this hike \nDirections: \nFrom Los Angeles\, take the Pacific Coast Highway (PCH) north\, 22 miles from Malibu Canyon Rd. Across the street from Thornhill Broome Beach is the entrance to La Jolla Canyon. It is very clearly marked. Turn right. \nFrom Ventura\, take PCH eastward\, and turn left 4 miles after Las Posas Road. \nDo NOT leave anything of value in your car\, at this or any other trailhead. \nDISCLAIMER / RELEASE OF LIABILITY \nThe hike host is a volunteer and not responsible for the group. SUMMARY:Chumash - Intermediate\, with Easy option
DESCRIPTION:4 miles\, 950′ gain\, Intermediate\nEasy Option: 1.6 miles\, 400′ gain\, Fit Beginner\nHardest option: 5 miles\, 1200′ gain\, Intermediate \nThe entire hike outbound is a steady incline. Nothing super steep\, just continuous and quite strenuous for many. There are virtually no junctions where one can get lost. \nThis is one of the more famous hikes in Simi Valley\, and for good reason. Much of the hike takes place along the edge of the mountain. The trail in spots is a bit rugged and rocky\, so a good tread on your shoes is recommended. \nIt is a part of the Chumash Natural Park that includes sandstone rock formations\, caves\, and beautiful vistas of Simi Valley. The land is owned by the Santa Monica Mountains Conservancy and the Rancho Simi Recreation & Park District. It is maintained by the Rancho Simi Trailblazers and patrolled by the Volunteer Trail Safety Service. \nWe’ll all begin the climb together. Those doing the easier option will stop after 0.8 miles and wait for about 45 minutes until the rest of us return to this spot for our social event. While waiting\, they can continue to climb any portion they want and return to this spot\, or just take in the views. \nThe rest will continue for 1.3 miles until a flat rock. Those that want the hardest option\, continue for another 0.5 miles and 250′ gain to the end of the trail. Head back down the same way to the social event spot. \nAt the social event spot\, we’ll be rewarded with sweeping views of Simi Valley and will share snacks and beverages. \nThere is really no way to get lost on this hike\, so everybody will move along at whatever pace they want. \nHike (click this link for a pic)\nDistance: 4.0 miles (1.5 mi for easy option\, 5.0 mi for hardest option)\nGain: 950′ (400′ for easy option\, 1200′ for hardest option)\nDistribution: Most of the incline is concentrated in the first half.\nDifficulty: Intermediate (Fit Beginer for easy option\, Intermediate for hardest option)\nShape: Out and back.\nPace: approx. 2.0 mph.\nTrail Type: Fire road\, double track\, single track.\nTrail Variations: The entire first half is incline. Some of the trail is rugged sandstone. Some of the trail is covered in large gravel.\nDuration: 3.5 hours\nDogs: Yes.\nRestrooms: No\nDrinking Fountains: No.\nParking: Free along street. \nWhat to bring: 1 liter of water for every 3 miles.\nHiking shoes/boots. Not required\, but recommended.\nFlashlight or headlamp.\nSunscreen and/or hat as needed.\nSnacks and/or beverages to share \nHosting\nRoute: The host knows the route. A pic of the route has been posted as part of this description.\nNavigation: Host memory\, enhanced by GPS navigation as needed.\nHike type: Social. \nInteresting Notes\nHere are a couple plants you are sure to see on this hike: \nCalifornia Encelia\nAka\, California Bush Sunflower\, California Brittlebush\, Coast Sunflower\, El Dorado. \nCenter is brown. When the center is yellow\, it is Brittlebush\, from the brittleness of the stems. This is from the daisy family\, and it is typically used as an ornamental plant. \nMediterranean Mustard / Black Mustard\nMediterranean mustard seeds are yellow or white\, while Black mustard seeds are brown or black. The flowers look the same. \nFlowers\, leaves (mustard greens)\, and roots are edible. Can be used as a spice. Grind seeds and mix with water and vinegar to make prepared mustard. This is often a very abundant noxious weed (has been designated by an agricultural authority as one that is injurious to agricultural or horticultural crops\, natural habitats or ecosystems\, or humans or livestock.). It grows everywhere along the sides of the trail\, often having to be cut back during trail maintenance. \nDid you know that cabbage\, mustard greens\, collard greens\, kale\, broccoli\, cauliflower\, brussels sprouts\, and prepared mustard\, are all from different parts of the wild mustard plant? \nDirections\nChumash Trail\n3200 Flanagan Dr.\nSimi Valley\, CA 93063\nCoordinates of trailhead: 34.293497\, -118.671176 \nFrom CA-118\nI-118\, exit Yosemite.\nNorth on Yosemite for 1.3 miles.\nRight (east) on Flanagan Dr. for 08. miles.\nContinue until the street ends and park. \nFAQ\nHiking Plus Page Links\nDisclaimer / Release of Liability

SUMMARY:Lang Ranch / Albertson Motorway ~ a gentler friendly hike
DESCRIPTION:http://photos4.meetupstatic.com/photos/event/5/5/d/4/600_351021972.jpeg \nThis is a 6 mile out and back hike with about 1150’ of elevation gain from Lang Ranch Parkway in Westlake Village on the Albertsons Motorway. Our route on the Albertson Fire Road\, which goes from the trailhead eastward all the way to Upper Las Virgenes Canyon\, and is a favorite route for hikers and mountain bikers alike. The trail is mostly a gently climbing\, well-travelled fireroad\, with a section of broad singletrack. We’ll hike a half mile past the Bridal-Path Home Owners Association portcullis then turn around and head back down. \nStatistics: 6 miles with about 1150’ of climbing. \nThe Albertson Fire Road is an especially scenic route in both directions\, rising up above the Simi and Conejo Valleys and offering westward views of the Pacific and offshore islands. \nhttp://photos1.meetupstatic.com/photos/event/7/3/7/0/600_351029552.jpeg \nThis hike is exposed almost the entire way\, and the sun has a way of sneaking up on you even on a temperate day. Bring plenty of water and portable shade. \nFree on-street parking is available at the trailhead. \nDirections: \nFrom the East\, West & South – take the 101 toward Thousand Oaks. Exit at Westlake Boulevard and turn north (away from the ocean). Drive 4.1 miles and turn right on the Lang Ranch Parkway. SUMMARY:Long Canyon - Easy CC Loop - Suitable for Fit Beginners
DESCRIPTION:3 miles\, 650′ gain\, Fit Beginner\nEasy option\, 1.4 miles\, 450′ gain\, Fit Beginner \nThe address given\, is not the address of the hike. It is a nearby address that may cause your GPS to drive past the trailhead. \nThose that prefer the Easy Option\, should head UP from the trail head\, waiting when they get to the bench at the top. \nFor the rest of us: Starting from the trailhead parking lot\, we head west on the Woodridge Connector along the sides of houses\, which is the back way. This is a relatively flat section for about 3/4 mile. \nLeft at the asphalt along Woodridge Loop Trail\, immediate right at the split\, then continue until it comes to an end at a junction. Left and continue to another junction. Make a right\, go about 50′ to another junction\, make a right again\, then 300′ to Autumn Ridge Trail. \nLeft and continue for about a mile. This is a fire road and a steady climb. We continue until 5-points junction. \nMake a hard left onto Sunrise trail\, then up to the bench. There\, we’ll meet with those that took the easy option\, and stop for a snack and beverage share. \nFor the return\, we’ll turn right and follow Long Canyon Trail down to the parking lot. \nInteresting Notes:\nTake notice of the Eucalyptus tree at the trailhead. \nAlong the left side of the trail during the last 200′ (last because we are doing a counter-clockwise loop)\, you will see: \nWhite Sage – the leaves are very fragrant when pinched\nElderberry – The blue or purple berries can be made into elderberry wine\, jam\, syrup\, and pies. \nHike\nDistance: 3 mi (easier option\, 1.4 mi)\nGain: 650′ (easier option\, 450′)\nDistribution: A moderate fire-road climb at the middle portion of the hike.\nDifficulty: Fit Beginner.\nShape: Loop\, counter-clockwise.\nPace: 2.0 mph.\nTrail Type: Fire road\, single and double track. Areas of sand\, gravel\, and rock\, some of it rugged.\nTrail Variations: The beginning is a flat walk. The middle has an extended incline of about 1000 steps. The end is downhill\, somewhat steep.\nDuration: 3.5 hours\nDogs: Yes.\nRestrooms: No\nDrinking Fountains: No.\nParking: Free at the trail head. \nWhat to bring:\n1 liter of water for every 3 miles\nSnacks and/or beverages to share\nHiking shoes preferred\, but athletic shoes will be OK\nFlashlight or headlamp.\nSunscreen and/or hat as needed \nHosting \nRoute: The host knows the route.\nNavigation: Host memory\, enhanced by GPS navigation as needed.\nHike type: Social. \nStops:\nThe host may designate stopping points to let others catch up. This hike includes an extended stop for a snack and beverage share just before the last segment down. \nWe’ll stop at junctions to make sure everybody makes any turns or chooses the correct direction at splits\, else something will be used to mark the direction\, usually a large arrow made of baking soda or some sticks in the shape of an arrow. There may not always be a sweeper designated to be the last hiker. \nDirections\nWhere Long Canyon Rd. and S. Wood Ranch Pkwy. intersect in Simi Valley. There is a free paved lot at the trailhead on the southwest corner. \nFrom CA-23 and I-101\nNorth CA-23\, exit Olsen Rd.\nRight (east) on Olsen Rd.\, which becomes Madera Rd.\, for 2 miles.\nRight (south) on N. Wood Ranch Pkwy.\, which becomes S. Wood Ranch Pkwy.\, for 2 miles.\nRight at dead end (intersection with Long Canyon Rd.) and immediate left into parking lot.\nTrailhead at the opposite corner. \nFrom CA-118 and CA-27\nWest CA-118\, exit 23 onto 1st St.\nLeft (south) on 1st St.\, which becomes Long Canyon Rd.\, for 5 miles.\nCross at dead end (intersection with S. Wood Ranch Pkwy.) and immediate left into parking lot.\nTrailhead at the opposite corner.\nCoordinates of trailhead: 34.228330\, -118.803130 \nIn the Spring and Summer\, arrive early. SUMMARY:Sagebrush Cantina: Hindsite
DESCRIPTION:Many from this group\, plus other friends\, will attend this event at Sagebrush Cantina. The band playing (Hindsite) puts on a fantastic show\, playing dance\, pop\, r&b/funk\, and hip hop music from the 70′ up to the latest hits. \nThis is one of the best venues I’ve experienced on LA’s west side\, and this is one of the best bands I’ve seen at this venue. Come see a Hollywood quality show for free. Hindsite will have you dancing all night! \nWe’ll be seated either in the outdoor area\, or indoors\, depending on the weather. Expect at least 70 of us. Seating is tough here\, so even if we don’t all sit together\, we’ll be seeing one another on the dance floor! \nThe band starts at 8p\, but get there an hour earlier and maybe you’ll get a seat with the group. \nSagebrush Cantina\n23527 Calabasas Rd\, Calabasas\, CA 91302\n(818) 222-6062 \nEvents Calendar (Sagebrush Cantina)\nEvents Calendar (Hindsite) \nHiking Plus Page Links

SUMMARY:Hike to the Hollywood Sign/Bronson Caves - Mt. Lee Summit
DESCRIPTION:I’m very excited to plan another hike up to the Hollywood Sign and the Bronson Caves. \nThis will take us to the summit of Mt. Lee where we will get the best views of the Hollywood Sign. The total mileage for our journey will be approximately 7 miles. Our elevation change should be about 1\,200 ft. \nWe will meet at the end of Canyon Drive which is where we will park. There will be parking options right at the address listed\, on the left\, and also right before that lot on a dirt patch. \nWe will be on Canyon Drive to start on up the canyon. Once we hit Mulholland Trail we will head left and this will take us to views of the front of the Hollywood Sign. After this we’ll go a short ways up the spiral road up to the summit of Mt. Lee. Once we’ve reach the top\, we’ll head back down to where we started. Once we get to the end\, we’ll go on a slight detour to the Bronson Caves. This is the Batcave from Batman. How cool is that?! \nBring lots of water\, sunscreen\, snacks/food\, jacket\, and anything else you think you’ll need. \nHere is the address (this will take you to the parking lot): 2974 Canyon Drive\, Los Angeles\, CA 90068 \nDogs are allowed on this hike. \nThere is a bathroom in the parking lot. \nPlease ask any questions you may have.

SUMMARY:Fossil and Old Boney Trails - Intermediate Hike
DESCRIPTION:Join us on this sweet (maybe not so sweet!) hike that wanders through grasslands and chaparral\, down into a canyon\, then up to eye-stretching views. \nWe will follow Sycamore Canyon fire road until it intersects with the Fossil Trail. We will then take the Fossil trail to the Old Boney trail. The Fossil trail features a hunk of fist-sized marine fossils smack dab in the middle of our path- we’ll actually walk on prehistory. \nIf it’s a clear day\, we’ll easily be able to see Santa Cruz Island\, as well as the Los Padres Mountain range. When we reach the Old Boney trail\, we will make a left and continue on Old Boney until it intersects with the Danielson Fire Road. We will then take the Danielson Fire Road back to the cars. \nThis hike will be approximately 6.5 miles with an elevation gain of approximately 1700 feet. Bring poles if you favor them. \nDIRECTIONS: \nExit Ventura Fwy (101) at Lynn Road. Take Lynn Road southwest 5.25 miles to Via Goleta. Rancho Sierra Vista entrance (through the stone pillars and arch) is on the left. Drive to the end\, and park near the restroom facilities. \nRestrictions apply for your safety and ours:\nDon’t show up unless you’re on the “Attending” list\nUnregistered or waitlisted will be turned away\nNo “Plus Ones” on this hike\nPlan on completing the entire hike or please find an alternative hike that better suits your hiking level.\nNo dogs\nAll participants must be 18 or older\, or accompanied by a parent or legal guardian. \nDISCLAIMER / RELEASE OF LIABILITY \nIMPORTANT\, PLEASE READ BELOW IN ITS ENTIRETY: \nThe hike host is a volunteer and not responsible for the group. SUMMARY:Oakbrook Vista - Easy Intermediate
DESCRIPTION:3.2 miles\, 900′ gain\, easy intermediate. \nThe first part is a steady incline\, followed by a rolling trail to our destination. Fit beginners can complete this hike\, but it will certainly get their blood pumping. There are no super steep sections. \nThis hike takes us to a secret spot below a large rock formation. Naturally into the side of the rock is a half-globe carved out of it\, giving us a quasi-cave area to sit and have our social event. \nThis is not a conditioning hike\, it’s a social hike. We’ll be stopping at various points to let people catch up and to make sure they make any turns. We’ll stop at the turn around point for a social event lasting 30 – 60 minutes\, where we will share snacks and beverages. \nThe Route \nHike\nDistance: 3.2 miles\nGain: 900′\nDistribution: Most of the incline is in the first half.\nDifficulty\nShape: Out and Back.\nPace: approx. 2.0 mph.\nTrail Type: Double track\, single track.\nTrail Variations:\nDuration: 3.5 hours\nDogs: Yes.\nRestrooms: Yes\, about a block from the start.\nDrinking Fountains: Maybe by the restrooms.\nParking: Park in the street. \nWhat to bring\n1 liter of water for every 3 miles.\nHiking shoes/boots. Not required\, but recommended.\nFlashlight or headlamp.\nSunscreen and/or hat as needed.\nSnacks and/or beverages to share \nHosting\nRoute: The host knows the route. A pic of the route has been posted. \nNavigation: Host memory\, enhanced by GPS navigation as needed. \nHike type: Social.\nWe won’t be hiking at a fast pace because this is a social hike\, not a conditioning hike. There is nothing wrong with stopping\, even if it means every 50 steps. \nStops: The host may designate stopping points to let others catch up. This hike will include an extended stop for a Snack and Beverage Share at the half way point. We will stop at junctions to make sure everybody makes any turns or chooses the correct direction at splits\, else something will be used to mark the direction\, usually a large arrow made of baking soda or some sticks in the shape of an arrow. \nGroup separation: Sometimes hikers wish to move significantly ahead and not wait at designated stopping points. Please let the host know. They are on their own regarding route and navigation. \nInteresting Notes\nHere are a couple plants you are sure to see on this hike: \nManzanita\nRounded leaves. Redish trunk and stems. Hard wood. Lots of curves. People used to spray this tree with lacquer and mount on their walls like a “tree of life” for decoration. \nSticky Monkeyflower\nOf the Snapdragon family. The flowers are supposed to resemble a laughing monkey’s face. Leaves are very sticky on the underside. \nDirections\nOakbrook Vista Trailhead\n3222 Lang Ranch Pkwy.\nThousand Oaks\, CA 91362\nCoordinates of trailhead: 34.212466\, -118.820325 \nFrom CA-23\nExit 15 Avenida de Los Arboles.\nEast on Avenida de Los Arboles until it ends\, 1.6 miles.\nRight (south) on N. Westlake Blvd 0.2 miles.\nLeft (east) on Lang Ranch Pkwy. 0.2 miles.\nPark on street\, trailhead on the right (south) side. \nFAQ\nHiking Plus Page Links\nDisclaimer / Release of Liability

SUMMARY:Kanan Dume Almost to Castro Peak OAB (Fast Paced)
DESCRIPTION:Our Out And Back (OAB) hike will take us on a less-traveled but quite beautiful part of the 60-mile Backbone Trail\, which runs through the Santa Monica Mountains National Recreation Area from Will Rogers State Park in the east to Point Mugu in the west. \nThe route begins at Kanan Dume Road and goes southerly a short distance\, allowing us to cross over the southernmost tunnel (Tunnel 1) above Kanan Dume Road. We then proceed easterly roughly 3 1/2 miles and up 1250 feet\, gradually winding our way up and through Latigo Canyon\, crossing Latigo Canyon Road\, and then ending at a saddle or on a bluff immediately south of Castro Peak with spectacular Pacific views. \nhttp://photos1.meetupstatic.com/photos/event/3/8/0/6/event_101654342.jpeg \nThe terrain is a mix of single and double-file trail. The majority of our out and back hike is wooded and shaded canyon trails\, offering periodic glimpses of the Pacific\, but the route eventually gives way to open hillsides and ridgelines\, and an open area over the Pacific. \nThe total distance for this hike will be approximately 7 miles with 1550 feet of elevation gain. \nNo “Plus Ones” allowed. \nNo dogs allowed on the hike. \nDirections: \nFrom the 101 – exit at the Kanan Road exit and drive south (toward the ocean) 7.8 miles\, going through two of the three tunnels on this road (which changes name to Kanan Dume Road). Turn right into the “Backbone Trail” parking area\, just before entering the third tunnel. \nFrom PCH – turn up South Kanan Dume Road. Drive 4.4 miles from PCH\, going through one tunnel\, and then turn left into the “Backbone Trail” parking area\, almost immediately after coming out of the tunnel. Free parking is available at the trailhead. \nDISCLAIMER / RELEASE OF LIABILITY \nIMPORTANT\, PLEASE READ BELOW IN ITS ENTIRETY: \nThe hike host is a volunteer and not responsible for the group.
