SUMMARY:Cave of Munitz - Intermediate
DESCRIPTION:**Intermediate\, 4.5 miles\, 1100′ gain.** \nIntermediate hikers will love this hike. It is not well suited for beginners. It has some of the most variations of terrain of any hike in the area and is one of my personal favorites. \nThis is an interesting gem and one of the famous formations that every hiker in the Los Angeles area should see. It’s a hike to a true cave! \nWe’ll start out with a rather flat walk behind some houses and then under some trees for a park like setting. The trail then continues past a fence\, where we’ll turn right and head for the cave. There will be an ascent to the cave entrance\, but it’s only a couple hundred steps. \n[Photo](https://secure.meetupstatic.com/photos/event/3/f/5/600_462361013.jpeg) \nThe cave can be entered easily by some\, while others take a bit longer. We’ll wait until everybody gets through. If you are carrying hiking poles or water\, you’ll need to be able to attach them to your body so that both hands are free. Some prefer gloves because there will be places where it is necessary to put your hands on the rocks. Some prefer long pants because there may be spots where you’ll be putting your knees on the rocks. \n[Photo](https://secure.meetupstatic.com/photos/event/4/0/2/600_462361026.jpeg) \nAfter coming out the exit\, there will be a short period of rock scrambling that is best done in the daylight\, followed by a very steep incline to the top for about 500 steps. This is the hardest part of the hike\, and even seasoned hikers will stop several times to take a breather while making their way up. \n[Photo](https://secure.meetupstatic.com/photos/event/4/0/f/600_462361039.jpeg) \nFrom here we’ll make our way along the top ridge to an area where we’ll stop and have a [social event](https://www.meetup.com/Hiking-Plus/messages/boards/thread/50879772) that will last 30-60 minutes. Please bring [snacks and/or drinks](https://www.meetup.com/Hiking-Plus/messages/boards/thread/50879772) to share. \nWe’ll head back around the back side of the mountain\, connecting back up with the original route to the cave for the return. \n**[Route ](https://secure.meetupstatic.com/photos/event/c/4/5/2/highres_481790258.jpeg)**This route shows an extension to Castle Peak. Most of the group will not do this extension. It cannot support more than a dozen people. \n**Hike**\nDistance: 4.5 miles\nGain: 1100′\nDistribution: Most of the incline is concentrated in the second quarter.\n[Difficulty](https://www.meetup.com/Hiking-Plus/messages/boards/thread/50879781): Intermediate.\nShape: Counterclockwise lollipop.\nPace: approx. 2.0 mph.\, significantly slower through cave and on steep ascents.\nTrail Type: Fire road\, double track\, single track\, cave\, rock scrambling.\nTrail Variations:\nThere is a steep ascent for about 500 steps.\nThere will be some rock scrambling after exiting the cave.\nEntering and exiting the cave can require some stemming.\nPlease have two hands free. \nDuration: 3.5 hours\nDogs: No. \nRestrooms: No\nDrinking Fountains: No.\nParking: Free along street. \nWhat to bring:\n1 liter of water for every 3 miles.\nHiking shoes/boots\nFlashlight or headlamp.\nSunscreen and/or hat as needed.\nGloves (optional).\n[Snacks and/or beverages to share](https://www.meetup.com/Hiking-Plus/messages/boards/thread/50879772) \n**Special Notes**\nIt is best that you have two hands free for traversing into and out of the cave\, and for the rock scrambling required after the cave. This means that any water or poles should be able to be carried by attaching to your pack or body. \n**Hosting** \n*Navigation:* Host memory\, enhanced by GPS navigation as needed. \n*Hike type:* Social.\nWe won’t be hiking at a fast pace because this is a social hike\, not a conditioning hike. There is nothing wrong with stopping\, even if it means every 50 steps. See “How hard is this hike” in the discussion section [LINK](https://www.meetup.com/Hiking-Plus/messages/boards/thread/50879781). \n*Stops:*\nThe host may designate stopping points to let others catch up. This hike will include an extended stop for a [snack and beverage share](https://www.meetup.com/Hiking-Plus/messages/boards/thread/50879772) at the half way point. We will stop at junctions to make sure everybody makes any turns or chooses the correct direction at splits\, else something will be used to mark the direction\, usually a large arrow made of baking soda or sticks. There may not always be a sweeper designated to be the last hiker. \nEach hiker is responsible for knowing their capability\, only attending events where they are able to sustain the described pace\, for keeping up with the group sufficiently enough to make the turns and not get left behind\, and for making sure the host is notified if they are going to split from the group. \n*Group separation:*\nSometimes hikers wish to move significantly ahead and not wait at designated stopping points. Please let the host know. They are on their own regarding route and navigation. \n**Interesting Notes** \nHere are a couple plants you are sure to see on this hike: \n*[Jimson Weed](https://secure.meetupstatic.com/photos/event/b/4/b/6/highres_504586262.jpeg)* \nThe plant got its name from Jamestown\, because in 1676\, Jamestown\, VA soldiers ate this plant in their salad and became psychotic for 11 days. \nThe leaves and seeds are used to make medicine. Despite serious safety concerns\, jimson weed is used to treat asthma\, cough\, flu (influenza)\, swine flu\, and nerve diseases. Some people use it as a recreational drug to cause hallucinations and a heightened sense of well-being (euphoria). \nAll parts of Datura plants contain dangerous levels of the tropane alkaloids atropine\, hyoscyamine\, and scopolamine\, which are classified as deliriants\, or anticholinergics. The risk of fatal overdose is high among uninformed users\, and many hospitalizations occur amongst recreational users who ingest the plant for its psychoactive effects. As much as a 5:1 variation can be found between plants. It contains chemicals such as atropine\, hyoscyamine\, and scopolamine. \nThese chemicals interfere with one of the chemical messengers (acetylcholine) in the brain and nerves. Ingesting only a few small seeds can result in serious poisoning and may be life-threatening. Ingesting even small amounts of the plant or seeds can result in confusion\, frightening hallucinations\, the inability to urinate or sweat\, overheating\, and a rapid heart rate. \nDepending on the amount ingested\, these troubling symptoms can last hours to many days\, and in some cases can lead to death. Touching he plant can cause dermatitis. \n*[Poison Oak](https://secure.meetupstatic.com/photos/event/4/3/7/600_462361079.jpeg)* \nIf the leaves of poison oak are broken or the plant is damaged in some way\, it releases an oil – urushiol – that is poisonous to humans. The oil triggers the body’s immune system and produces a rash. Even dead leaves\, stems\, or roots contain the oil; it can also be inhaled if the plants are burned. Urushiol is the same oil that is produced by poison ivy and sumac. \nIndirect contact can occur if the oil gets onto clothes or is carried on a pet’s coat. Although cats and dogs are not generally affected by urushiol\, they can carry it. Most people\, but not all\, show an allergy to the oil\, referred to as allergic contact dermatitis. It usually appears between half a day and 3 days after contact with the plant oil. \nPeople who are allergic to the oil do not have a reaction until they have a second contact with the oil. The immune system learns to recognize the oil from the first occasion and then reacts to it aggressively on future contact. \n**Directions:** \nCave of Munitz\n24501 Woodglade Ln.\nWest Hills\, CA 91307 \nNote: We’ll be parking here\, and then walking to the trailhead.\nTrailhead coordinates: 34.195358\, -118.658544 \n*From I-101*\nI-101\, exit Valley Circle Blvd.\nValley Circle Blvd. north for 3.2 miles.\nLeft (west) on Highlander Rd. for 300′.\nPark on the street at near Elmsbury Ln. \n*From CA-118*\nI-118\, exit CA-27 Topanga Canyon Blvd.\nSouth CA-27 Topanga Canyon Blvd. for 2.4 miles.\nRight (west) on Plummer St. for 0.9 miles.\nSlight left (west\, then south) onto Valley Circle Blvd. for 3.0 miles.\nRight (west) on Highlandr Rd. for 300′.\nPark on the street at near Elmsbury Ln. \n**[Frequently Asked Questions](https://www.meetup.com/Hiking-Plus/pages/23772638/Frequently_Asked_Questions)**\n**[Disclaimer / Release of Liability](https://www.meetup.com/Hiking-Plus/pages/29622459/Is_Hiking_Dangerous/)**

SUMMARY:Bowling and Social Event
DESCRIPTION:**Bowling is back!** \nSince this adventure started\, we have set ourselves apart. It’s the people and the format of our events. Hiking is fun. Hiking-Plus is fun-Plus! \n**This is Bowling with a Social Event!** \nPlease be aware there are two Harley’s bowling alleys in Simi Valley. This is the one on Cochran at Stearns. \nYou do not have to bowl to attend this event. Come for the party – watch\, laugh\, and share some snacks and beverages with the group! Please post in the comments if you don’t plan to bowl so we have a good bowler count. \nI love the bowling parties\, and many others do to. Prices have gone up\, many have expressed interest even if the price has gone up. \n**$21 per person**\, which also includes $4 extra for our group. This is a fund-raising event to pay the costs of this site\, yet your cost is still no more than the regular price. \nIf you can present yourself by 5:45p to pay **me** in **cash**\, you can reserve you a spot. It’s no cost if you want to come for the party and not bowl. \nIn the past\, those that have paid in cash by the event time (5:45p) have been able to bowl\, so we won’t set an RSVP limit. Still\, if you have not indicated in the comments that you aren’t bowling\, I’m going to assume you plan on bowling\, so try not to be no-show or day-of-the-event cancel. \nFeel free to discretely bring snacks and drinks to share. Officially\, nothing from outside is allowed\, but many of us have smuggled in some food and drink. Otherwise\, they are available for purchase at the snack bar. This location has a full bar. \nI can’t say where are lanes will be\, so you’ll have to look for us or ask at the front desk where “Hiking Plus” is. \nThe event host will put together teams\, assign lanes\, and collect cash payment. Please be paid by the scheduled event time. If you come later\, you may or may not be able to bowl. \nThe price includes shoes (bring or wear socks). Please bring **$21.00 cash**. Exact change is appreciated. \nAre you any good at bowling? That would be the exception. Most of us are terrible or haven’t bowled since we were kids. This is about having a venue for a social event\, with something inexpensive to do if you want. \n**Bowling Etiquette**\nBe ready to bowl when it’s your turn\, else someone else may bowl for you to keep the game moving. \n**Harley’s Valley Bowl**\n5255 Cochran Street\nSimi Valley\, CA 93063\n(805) 584-2695 \nMany of us may head across the parking lot after bowling\, to “Bao Su a Chinese Cuisine”. But maybe not this time\, because there’s also a country band playing this night. \nFuture bands at the bowling alley: https://www.harleysbowl.com/events

This is a long drive so I will be staying with a few others at Angelus Oaks Lodge that offers cabins with a excellent price as its cash only and only a couple miles from the trailhead. The permit I have for the hike is for the max 12 people so we will not be moving anyone from the go list if we max out (unless someone drops off) Please know that the drive to the trailhead is a bit rocky. I have attached the AllTrails link for directions\, pics\, and stats: https://www.alltrails.com/trail/us/california/san-bernardino-peak-trail-via-angelus-oaks \nTrail out and back\nMiles 16.9\nElevation Gain 4721 ft\nRated Hard (not for beginners)\nDogs allowed but must be conditioned for longer harder hikes\nParking is free dirt lot must display an Adventure Pass \nAs of now there is no sweeper for this hike so please know if you feel you can not finish for any reason please turn back early \nPlease check back on hike info as rain\, heat advisory\, strong winds or low attendance may cause the hike to be rescheduled \nWe will always follow Jim’s Golden Rules:\n1. Hike your own hike\n2. SUMMARY:Sagebrush Cantina: Hindsite
DESCRIPTION:Many from this group\, plus other friends\, will attend this event at Sagebrush Cantina. The band playing (Hindsite) puts on a fantastic show. \nThis is one of the best venues I’ve experienced on LA’s west side\, and this is one of the best bands I’ve seen at this venue. Come see a Hollywood quality show for free. \nWe’ll be seated in the outdoor area. Expect at least 30 of us. Seating is tough here\, so even if we don’t all sit together\, we’ll be seeing one another on the dance floor! \nThe band starts at 8p\, but get there an hour earlier and you’ll likely get a seat with the group. \n23527 Calabasas Rd\, Calabasas\, CA 91302\n(818) 222-6062

SUMMARY:Wendy Lollipop
DESCRIPTION:**[4.6 miles\, 1000′ gain. Easy Intermediate](https://www.meetup.com/Hiking-Plus/messages/boards/thread/50879781)**\n**Easier Option – 2.7 miles\, 320′ gain** \nMany have gotten lost relying on GPS. This is the Wendy Trailhead\, where S. Wendy Dr. ends at Potrero Rd. \nHeading out\, we cross a creek\, turn right at the split\, then Turn right at the dead end. We regroup at the visitor center\, where there will be bathrooms. \nWe cross the wooden bridge and go left at the asphalt path. \nAfter 1/3 mile\, those that want the **easier path** turn left\, go 0.4 miles and turn right at the dead end. After 500′\, wait at the bench for the rest of the group (45 – 60 min). \nThe rest will continue down for 3/4 mile. There will be a porta-potty and picnic table. We’ll regroup\, then turn right and go about 1.3 miles and another 435′ of gain before turning left and heading up about 1/2 mile. \nAt the top\, we’ll turn left for 500′ and arrive at a bench and overlook. We’ll [share snakes and beverages](https://www.meetup.com/Hiking-Plus/messages/boards/thread/50879772) for 30-60 minutes\, then head down 500′\, turn right at the junction\, and return to our cars. \nIf you wish to return before the social event completes\, study the [map](https://secure.meetupstatic.com/photos/event/3/3/e/highres_502680830.jpeg) so you can find your way back. \n**[The Route](https://secure.meetupstatic.com/photos/event/3/3/e/highres_502680830.jpeg)**\nHike Distance: 4.6 mi / 2.7 mi\nGain: 1000′ / 320′\nDistribution: Most of the incline is concentrated in the middle of this hike.\n[Difficulty](https://www.meetup.com/Hiking-Plus/messages/boards/thread/50879781): Easy Intermediate / Fit beginner\nShape: Lollipop.\nPace: approx. 2.0 mph.\nTrail Type: Fire road\, double track\, single track.\nDuration: 3.5 hours\nDogs: We pass a “no dogs” sign.\nRestrooms: Yes\nDrinking Fountains: No.\nParking: Free along street.\nWhat to bring: 1 liter of water for every 3 miles.\nHiking shoes/boots. Not required\, but recommended.\nFlashlight or headlamp. Sunscreen and/or hat as needed.\n[Snacks and/or beverages to share](https://www.meetup.com/Hiking-Plus/messages/boards/thread/50879772) \n*Hosting Route:* The host knows the route.\n*Navigation:* Host memory\, enhanced by GPS navigation as needed.\n*Hike type:* Social. We won’t be hiking at a fast pace because this is a social hike\, not a conditioning hike. \n*Stops:* The host may designate stopping points to let others catch up. This hike will include an extended stop for a [snack and beverage share](https://www.meetup.com/Hiking-Plus/messages/boards/thread/50879772) at the half way point. We will stop at junctions to make sure everybody makes any turns or chooses the correct direction at splits\, else something will be used to mark the direction\, usually an arrow made of baking soda or sticks. \nThere may not always be a sweeper designated to be the last hiker. Each hiker is responsible for knowing their capability\, only attending events where they are able to sustain the described pace\, for keeping up with the group sufficiently enough to make the turns and not get left behind\, and for making sure the host is notified if they are going to split from the group. \n*Group separation:* Hikers moving significantly ahead or not waiting at designated stopping points are on their own regarding route and navigation. \n**Interesting Notes**\nHere are a couple plants you will see on this hike: \n*[Heartleaf Penstemon](https://secure.meetupstatic.com/photos/event/3/4/0/highres_502680832.jpeg)*\nLeaves are shiny and saw toothed\, shaped like hearts\, 2 to 6 centimeters long and arranged oppositely on the branches. Stems are red. Small scarlet red tubular flowers. \n*[Yucca](https://secure.meetupstatic.com/photos/event/3/4/4/highres_502680836.jpeg)*\nWhite flowers on stalk. Stalk is often missing\, leaving only the spires from which it grows. Stalks are very strong and light\, so they make good walking sticks. Needles on end of spires. Chopped up root can be uses as shampoo. Roasted root can be eaten like a potato. Illegal to remove live stick in CA. Pronounced with short u. Dried leaves make good tinder. \nRoot can be chopped up and used as soap. To eat root\, remove skin and core\, boil 15 minutes. Then fry or bake. Flowers are mildly sweet. The fruit is also edible\, but bitter if not ripe. To access fibers: Soak for a month in water\, lightly pound leaves with rock or club\, or scrape skin off skin. Roll between hands\, then pull and separate fibers. Weave into cordage. \n**Directions:**\nWendy Trail Head\n4128 Potrero Rd\nThousand Oaks\, CA 91361\nCoordinates of trailhead: 34.154507\, -118.950095 \n*From CA-118:*\nCA-118 west for 8 miles.\nCA-23 south for 7.4 miles.\nUS-101 North for 2 miles.\nExit 45 Lynn Rd. and south/west for 2.5 miles.\nLeft on S. SUMMARY:ISLIP PEAK - The quest continues
DESCRIPTION:BEFORE YOU WILL BE MOVED TO THE GOING LIST\, YOU WILL NEED TO UPDATE YOUR CDH PROFILE (The three questions must be answered with a “yes”) IF YOU HAVE NOT ALREADY DONE SO.\nNEED HELP:\n[go to: https://wp.me/P9MbG4-hC](go to: https:/ \nTHE QUEST: My pursuit of taking on Mount Baden Powell the hard way\, via The Big Horn Mine on my 75th birthday\, continues as I get my self in shape by taking on Mount Islip this week. \nJoin me and experience the thrill of cross country hiking in the high country of the San Gabriel Mountains. We’ll be taking on Mount Islip from Windy Gap\, but we won’t be doing it the easy way via the PCT. Instead we’ll be dropping down to a trail on her south face before linking up with a trail coming up from Crystal Lake so as to make it more of a challenge. From there the fun begins as we go xcountry down to the PCT which will take us to the Mount Williamson Trailhead via Islip Saddle. This trek is only 9+ miles\, but it packs a punch with a 3000′ overall gain consisting of some popular trails\, “use trails” and no trail at all. This will be accomplished by way of a car shuttle.\nThis all day trek is for those of you who are looking for something a lot more challenging than the average outing. No beginners please unless you’re in top physical condition. Cross country hiking experience would help for this. If you have some place to be later in the day\, this event will not work for you. \nWe will be setting a steady pace with several breaks while staying together all the way so as not to lose anyone. \nMICRO SPIKES\, POLES AND GATORS ARE RECOMMENDED \nDAY’S AGENDA \nSTART: After dropping a car off at The Williamson Trailhead we’ll drive to the Windy Gap trailhead where the trek begins to Mount Islip. \nMOUNT ISLIP: Standing at 8200′\, this sharp high peak provides impressive views of the Mojave Desert\, the Los Angeles Basin\, Santa Catalina Island\, and San Clemente Island on a clear day. From here\, there will be no trail as we make our way down a ridge to the PCT trail which will take us to Islip saddle. \nISLIP SADDLE: This saddle sits between the two sister peaks Williamson and Islip\, and is the second highest pass along the Angeles Crest highway. We’ll pass through this saddle as we hike along the PCT trail. \nPCT TRAIL: The Pacific Crest Trail (PCT) begins in southern California at the Mexican border and travels a total distance of 2\,650 miles to the Canadian border. From Islip Saddle\, we’ll head up to the Bump. \nTHE BUMP: This is a high point high in the granite folds of Mt. Williamson which we will take on before heading down to the Mount Williamson trailhead where a car awaits our return. \nMEETUP LOCATION AND TIME: 6:30 am at the meetup location on Hwy. 2 in La Canada. (BOOTS ON\, READY TO GO).\nIF MEETING THE GROUP THERE\, YOU MUST STATE SO\, OTHERWISE I WON’T BE STOPPING THERE.\nMEETUP DIRECTIONS: From the 210 Fwy\, exit at Angeles Crest Hwy and drive north about a quarter mile to just past Milmada Dr. in LA CANADA\, then park alongside the road.\nhttps://www.google.com/maps/place/34%C2%B012’31.7%22N+118%C2%B011’59.8%22W/@34.2088224\,-118.2021197\,17z/data=!3m1!4b1!4m6!3m5!1s0x0:0x3a7e81cac75a935a!7e2!8m2!3d34.2088179!4d-118.1999312 \nEARLIER MEETUP LOCATION AND TIME: 5:45am at the Woodland Hills Meetup location.\nIF MEETING THERE\, LET ME KNOW\, OTHERWISE I WON’T BE STOPPING THERE.\nhttps://www.google.com/maps/place/34%C2%B010’04.0%22N+118%C2%B037’16.0%22W/@34.1677751\,-118.6216512\,228m/data=!3m2!1e3!4b1!4m6!3m5!1s0x0:0x0!7e2!8m2!3d34.1677741!4d-118.6211043 \nDURATION: We’ll want to finish the hike and be back to the cars by 3:30 p.m. at the latest\, followed by lunch at The Habit Burger Grill/ Pandera Bread in La Canada. \nTERRAIN: Popular trails\, “use” trails and no trails at all which can be extremely steep at times. \nDISTANCE: 9+ miles \nELEVATION RANGE: Gain of 3000′ and a loss of 3300′ \nTHE PACE: A comfortable pace no faster than the slowest hiker. \nLEVEL: Advanced Intermediate \nMY CELL NUMBER IS: 805-538-5972 \nDOGS ALLOWED: NO

SUMMARY:Las Llajas - Suitable for beginners
DESCRIPTION:**[5 miles\, 500′ gain\, Beginner](https://www.meetup.com/Hiking-Plus/messages/boards/thread/50879781)** \nThis hike is a great trail for beginners because all the elevation gain is distributed. It is a walk down a rolling fire road through a really cool canyon\, and you will find no difficult or extended elevation climbs. \nThis is one of my favorite trails for people new to hiking. It is an “out-and-back” hike\, where we return the way we came\, so there is virtually no chance of getting lost. You may be amazed that such a place exists right here in Simi Valley. \nFrom the trail head\, we’ll walk down an asphalt path for several hundred steps and turn right onto a gravel fire road. After that\, there will be no more turns. We may take a detour up a trail off to the right to see the first bee sanctuary\, then return back to the fire road. \nWe’ll continue on the fire-road for about 1 mile. We’ll stop there (in the shade if summer) to allow others to catch up. \nThen we’ll take a 200′ detour to the left to see another bee sanctuary\, which continues in a half circle back to the fire road. Even though I haven’t seen any actual bees there in a while\, it’s still interesting to see. \nWe’ll continue for another 1.5 miles and wait there for anybody that needs to catch up\, and share snacks and/or beverages. \nThere is a lot of wild life along this trail because it is the only area with water for quite a distance. \nThis is a social hike\, not a conditioning hike. Still\, for those that aren’t interested in the beverage and/or snack share and want more of a workout\, just continue on for another mile\, then turn around and come back. That’s about how long we’ll be before packing up and heading back the way we came. \n**Interesting Notes:** \n*[Tree Tobacco (Nicotiana glauca)](https://secure.meetupstatic.com/photos/event/3/e/b/a/highres_502756058.jpeg)* \nElongated yellow flowers. The Cahuilla Indians used the leaves interchangeably with other tobacco species in hunting rituals and as a poultice to treat swellings\, bruises\, cuts\, wounds\, boils\, sores\, inflamed throat\, and swollen glands. \nIt does not contain nicotine. It contains anabasine\, a similar compound\, which is highly toxic to humans and animals. It is more toxic than nicotine. Ingestion of the leaves can be fatal. It is being investigated for use as a biofuel. All parts of this plant are toxic. \nUsed as an insecticide. Do not smoke it. \n**The Hike**\nDistance: 5 miles\nGain: 500′\nDistribution: Well distributed.\nDifficulty: [Beginner.](https://www.meetup.com/Hiking-Plus/messages/boards/thread/50879781)\nShape: Out and Back.\nPace: 2.0 mph.\nTrail Type: Fire road.\nTrail Variations: Rolling stroll.\nDuration: 3.5 hours\nDogs: Yes.\nRestrooms: No\nDrinking Fountains: No.\nParking: Free along street. \n**What to bring:**\n1 liter of water for every 3 miles.\n[Snacks and/or beverages to share](https://www.meetup.com/Hiking-Plus/messages/boards/thread/50879772)\nHiking shoes preferred\, but athletic shoes will be OK.\nFlashlight or headlamp.\nSunscreen and/or hat as needed. \n**Hosting** \n*[Route](https://secure.meetupstatic.com/photos/event/3/e/a/8/highres_502756040.jpeg) and Navigation:* Host memory\, enhanced by GPS navigation as needed. \n*Hike type:* Social.\nWe won’t be hiking at a fast pace because this is a social hike\, not a conditioning hike. There is nothing wrong with stopping\, even if it means every 50 steps. \n*Stops:*\nThe host may designate stopping points to let others catch up. This hike will include an extended stop for a snack and beverage share at the half way point. This hike does not have any junctions or turns once past the initial path down to the fire road. There may not always be a sweeper designated to be the last hiker. \nSince this hike is out-and-back on a wide fire road with no turns after the first 500′\, one cannot get lost. Therefore\, for this hike\, it will be acceptable to split from the group moving faster\, slower\, or otherwise at your own pace. \n*Group separation:*\nSometimes hikers wish to move significantly ahead and not wait at designated stopping points. Please let the host know. They are on their own regarding route and navigation. \n**Directions**\nLas Llajas Canyon Trail\n5715 Evening Sky Dr\nSimi Valley\, CA 93063 \n*From the west*\n23-N to 118-E\, Exit 29 Yosemite.\nFrom the east: 118-W\, Exit 29 Yosemite.\nHead north on Yosemite for 1.25 miles. Turn right (east) on Evening Sky Drive and proceed for 0.5 miles.\nSee the trail head on the left. SUMMARY:Three Points to Pacifico Mountain Campground via Pacific Crest Trail
DESCRIPTION:https://www.alltrails.com/trail/us/california/three-points-to-pacifico-mountain-campground/photos \nHello Fellow Hikers\,\nTime to get in a long endurance hike. This is gonna be a long day but worth the trek. This time of year we will probably see a lot of thru hikers on the PCT trail. This trail will be both exposed and shaded. This will be a great conditioning hike as it is gradual with the last part being the climb up. Some people have stated that the trail is longer but they did veer off the original map to take an easier way to the top and back. We will be on the PCT through the route so the trail should be easier to follow now that it is open after being closed due to covid. This is a forest setting surrounded by mountains. This is a lesser known trail besides the PCTers. The temps are supposed to cool down this weekend but bring extra water just incase. Carpooling at our same meetup spot will be offered for anyone who wishes to carpool or follow to the trailhead (Best donuts located 2325 Kuehner Dr # 127 Simi Valley off the 118 freeway at 5:45am) I have attached the AllTrails link for directions\, pics\, and stats: https://www.alltrails.com/trail/us/california/three-points-to-pacifico-mountain-campground/photos \nTrail out and back\nMiles 18.7\nElevation Gain 3234ft\nRated Hard\nDogs allowed but must be conditioned for a longer harder hike\nParking must have Adventure Pass displayed \nAs of now there is no sweeper for this hike so please know if you feel you can not finish for any reason please turn back early \nPlease check back on hike info as rain\, heat advisory\, strong winds or low attendance may cause the hike to be rescheduled \nWe will always follow Jim’s Golden Rules:\n1. Hike your own hike\n2. Please stop at every junction and split to wait for others to catch up \nPlease remember to bring all essentials you’ll need for a hike (you’ll need extra water for this one) \nLiability Disclaimer:\nAnd last….The Organizer\, Co Organizer\, Assistant Organizers and Event hosts in this group are not professional guides. The function of the organizer is only to organize the trip. Each person who signs up for a Event is responsible for his or her own safety and the safety of his or her guest. Remember this is your hike all responsibilities are of your own once you attend please be aware of your limits.

SUMMARY:Grizzly Flat Trail from Vogel Flat
DESCRIPTION:Needed an easy-ish hike to stretch the legs and get some fresh air. The weather should be a bit cooler and the trail is partially shaded. Water crossings may or may not be avoidable and we may or may not make a bushwhacky detour to a likely dry waterfall. IF the parking lot is closed\, park in the turnout on the hwy. I won’t be in a hurry and will make stops to regroup and cool down. \nThe Grizzly Flat Trail departs from Stoneyvale Picnic Area. We will follow it on a single track crossing the Tujunga River several times. It is usually possible to keep your feet dry but will depend on water levels. We will then be exploring a couple of nearby creeks\, a 75′ waterfall and make our way back over to part of the Grizzly Flat Trail. We should be back to the cars before lunch. \nShould you join us\, you must okay with scrambling\, possible bushwhacking\, water crossings\, mindful of poison oak\, loose rocks\, etc. \nThe Stats: \nDistance: 6-ish miles\, out and back \nElevation Gain: <1500 feet (a guess) \nRating: 4 for creek and scrambling lovers; 7 if you’re not \nTrail: single track\, overgrown\, a little bushwacky at times\, rock-hopping\, bouldering. \nADVENTURE PASS REQUIRED \nThis location does require a National Forest Adventure Pass for parked vehicles. These passes can be purchased at most ranger stations (if open) in the area of our hike\, most sporting goods\, convenience stores and gas stations. The cost is $5/day or $30/yr. When buying an annual pass for $30 you can also buy an additional annual pass for $5. Splitting this fee with someone is the most economical way to get the passes. A National Parks Pass can also be used for parking as well and should have come with a rear view mirror hanger. \nhttps://secure.meetupstatic.com/photos/event/2/7/5/3/600_466510067.jpeg \nDirections: \nFrom Interstate 210 in Sunland\, exit on Sunland Boulevard and head east. It turns into Foothill Boulevard. Continue east to Oro Vista Ave. Turn left. Follow Oro Vista which veers right and turns into Big Tujunga Cyn Rd. Proceed to Vogel Flat Road and turn right again. The road drops to a stop sign. To the right is a Forest Service fire station. Turn LEFT and park in the Stoneyvale Picnic area. \nhttps://secure.meetupstatic.com/photos/event/2/7/4/b/600_466510059.jpeg \nThe Story: \nIn the 1800s\, a large population of grizzlies roamed the San Gabriel Mountains. The bears frightened early miners and settlers and in later years had many run-ins with sportsmen and forest rangers. Big Tujunga Canyon was a particularly attractive habitat to the big bears; in fact\, the last wild grizzly in Southern California was killed in the lower reaches of the canyon in 1916. \nThese days you won’t find any grizzlies atop Grizzly Flat; just a few hikers enjoying a pine-shaded retreat in the Angeles National Forest. Grizzly Flat Trail explores Tujunga Canyon\, then rises into the storied hills where notorious highwayman Tiburcio Vasquez eluded a posse in 1874. Vasquez\, after robbing a San Gabriel Valley rancher\, rode over the top of the San Gabriels\, descended north along a then-unnamed creek to Big Tujunga Canyon and made good his escape. The unnamed creek\, which cuts through the eastern edge of Grizzly Flat\, has since been known as Vasquez Creek. \nThe hike: The trail\, signed with the international hiking symbol\, begins at a vehicle barrier at the east end of Stonyvale Picnic Area. Almost immediately\, you cross Big Tujunga Creek. Small trail markers keep you on the path\, which crosses a boulder field and fords the creek three more times.\n(John McKinney\, LA Times) \n**************************\n**************************\n**************************\n************************** \nhttps://secure.meetupstatic.com/photos/event/c/8/0/0/600_455451200.jpeg \n\n****************************************\n\nThe Fine Print\n\nPLEASE - Know your limits and abilities. Bring snacks and drink plenty of liquids when hiking. Check weather conditions and dress accordingly and be aware of your surroundings at all times. Watching out for poison oak\, snakes\, ticks\, uneven footing\, spectacular views\, beautiful fauna all while interacting with awesome (usually) fellow hikers can be extremely hazardous\, rewarding and fun.\n\nThe Farzan Rule: Posted hike times are the time the hike starts or we leave from a posted shuttle location. I’m aware other Meetup groups offer a grace period for late arrivals; we don’t. It’s your responsibility to know the location of the meeting spot and be there and ready to participate at the posted time. If you have any concerns about the directions feel free to contact the organizer of the event\, preferably in advance of the event and not at the start time. I’m of the opinion that it’s not fair to delay an event when the majority of attendees have arrived on-time. (so named after a conversation I had with a certain un-named member)\n\nRSVP’s: If you RSVP for an event be responsible and update your RSVP if your plans change. If your plans change at the last second and you’re not able to update your RSVP also let us know. In my opinion a no-show is someone who has no regard for following the guidelines we request from our members and will risk being removed from future events that have a limit.\n\nhttps://secure.meetupstatic.com/photos/event/c/8/4/8/600_455451272.jpeg\n\nVHC HIKE RATING SCALE\n\nRating a hike is subjective\, meaning the difficulty of a hike will be in direct relation to how often you hike and the type of hike you prefer. Keep in mind that any hike can have the following: un-even hiking surfaces\, various obstructions\, water and/or water crossings or bouldering and/or rock hopping. A great hike will have all of these!\n\n1 – A long walk\n\n2 – 4 mile hike w/little elevation gain\n\n3 – 5 mile hike w/up to1000 ft. elevation gain\n\n4 – 5+ mile hike w/up to1500 ft. elevation gain (heart rate increases at times)\n\n5 – 7+ mile hike w/over 1500 ft. elevation gain (heart rate increasing even more at times)\n\n6 – 7+ mile hike w/over 2000 ft. elevation gain (at times you might be trying to remember how to perform CPR)\n\n7 – 5+ mile hike w/over 2000 ft. elevation gain (at times you might be muttering expletives to yourself)\n\n8 – 10+ mile hike w/over 3500 ft. elevation gain (at times you might be angry with the hike leader)\n\n9 – 10+ mile hike w/over 5000 ft. elevation gain (at times you might be thinking of reporting the hike leader to the authorities)\n\n10 – Use your imagination\n\nClass 3 Scrambling: Scrambling or un-roped climbing. You must use your hands at times to hold the terrain or find your route. This may be caused by a combination of boulders\, steepness and extreme terrain. Some Class 3 routes have ropes in place for assistance.\n\nDISCLAIMER / RELEASE OF LIABILITY\n\nIMPORTANT\, PLEASE READ BELOW IN ITS ENTIRETY:\n\nI am a volunteer (i.e. not liable for the group). Safety is a priority for everyone in the group. Think of this as hiking with a group of friends.\n\nOutdoor sports and other events we plan can be inherently dangerous and accidents may happen. By participating in any posted event\, you're taking responsibility for your own safety and well-being. The VHC Meetup Group and its organizers are not trained leaders and we do not confirm the qualifications of any of its members to lead or participate in trips. All participants take full responsibility for their own actions. If you choose to sign up for any VHC Meetup events\, you are releasing the VHC Meetup Group and it's organizers from all liability in case of possible injuries as stated in paragraph 6.2 of the Meetup “Terms of Service” located on the bottom of the Meetup website. Your personal safety depends on your own judgment and experience.

SUMMARY:4th of July Celebration Potluck Hike - Los Padres
DESCRIPTION:**3.25 miles** **out and back\, 600′ gain\, Easy Intermediate.** \nLet’s celebrate the Fourth of July with a great potluck and fireworks! \nWe’ll start by entering the Los Padres trail\, through a spooky oak covered section\, then climb until we reach the fireroad at the 1/2 mile point. We’ll stop and regroup here. \nWe’ll turn right up the fireroad and climb for about a 1/2 mile to another junction\, where we’ll turn right onto the Los Robles trail. After 500 feet\, we’ll take a split off to the right and continue along the Vista Loop for another 1/2 mile until we come to a bench at the top. \nWe’ll have a **potluck here and watch the fireworks**.\nYou may wish to bring something to sit on\, such as a camp chair or a blanket. The bench and area around it will be used to place our pot luck items. \nWe’ll follow the reverse route back to the cars sometime after the fireworks. It will be dark on the return trip\, so please bring a light. \nPlease bring something to eat and drink\, we’ll [share snacks and drinks](https://www.meetup.com/Hiking-Plus/messages/boards/thread/50879772).\nIf your item requires it\, bring plates and utensils to share. \nIf you wish to leave early\, please study the map posted with description so you are able to navigate the return without the host. \nHike Distance: 3.25 miles\nGain: 600′\nDistribution: Most of the incline well distributed in the first half.\n[Difficulty](https://www.meetup.com/Hiking-Plus/messages/boards/thread/50879781): Easy Intermediate.\nShape: Out and Back\nPace: approx. 2.0 mph.\nTrail Type: Fire Road\, Single-Track\, and Double-Track.\nTrail Variations:\nSeveral extended inclines of 1000 steps.\nSeveral steep sections of 300 steps\, but no hands required.\nDuration: 3.0 hours\nDogs: Yes.\nRestrooms: No\nDrinking Fountains: No.\nParking: Free along street. \nWhat to bring: 1 liter of water for every 3 miles.\nHiking shoes/boots\nFlashlight or headlamp.\nSunscreen and/or hat as needed.\nSnacks and/or beverages to share. \n**Hosting** \n*Route:* The host knows the route. **A pic of the route** [LINK](https://secure.meetupstatic.com/photos/event/1/f/1/a/highres_504907962.jpeg) \n*Navigation:* Host memory\, enhanced by GPS navigation as needed \n*Hike type:* Social.\nWe won’t be hiking at a fast pace because this is a social hike\, not a conditioning hike. There is nothing wrong with stopping\, even if it means every 50 steps. \n*Stops:*\nThe host may designate stopping points to let others catch up. We will stop at junctions to make sure everybody makes any turns or chooses the correct direction at splits\, else something will be used to mark the direction\, usually a large arrow made of baking soda. There may not always be a sweeper designated to be the last hiker. \n**Interesting Notes** \nThese are a couple plants you are likely to see on this hike: \n*[Yucca](https://secure.meetupstatic.com/photos/event/a/f/5/9/highres_501944889.jpeg)* \nWhite flowers on stalk. Stalk is often missing\, leaving only the spires from which it grows. Stalks are very strong and light\, so they make good walking sticks. Needles on end of spires. Chopped up root can be uses as shampoo or soap. Roasted root can be eaten like a potato. Illegal to remove live stick in CA. \nPronounced with short u. Dried leaves make good tinder. To eat root\, remove skin and core\, boil 15 minutes. Then fry or bake. Flowers are mildly sweet. Adam says they taste like radishes. The fruit is also edible\, but bitter if not ripe. To access fibers: Soak for a month in water\, lightly pound leaves with rock or club\, or scrape off skin. Roll between hands\, then pull and separate fibers. Weave into cordage. \n*[Wild Cucumber](https://secure.meetupstatic.com/photos/event/a/f/5/9/highres_501944889.jpeg)* \nToxic. Boil fruit in water to make spikes easy to remove. Inside is a natural luffa. Tubars (thickened part of a stem\, usually underground\, like the potato) can be crushed and thrown into water to immobilize fish. \nAlmost the entire plant is poisonous. Although wild cucumbers are related to the familiar\, domestic vegetable\, the prickly “cucumbers” consist not of fleshy fruit\, but of two seed chambers containing lacy netting. \n**Directions** \nLos Padres Trailhead\n15 Los Padres Dr.\nThousand Oaks\, CA\, 91361 \nFrom I-101:\nWest of CA-23\, I-101\, exit S. Moorpark Rd.\nSouth on Moorpark Rd. north for 1000 ft.\nLeft on Los Padres Dr.\nAfter 200 ft\, trailhead on the right.\nPark on the street. \n[FAQ](https://www.meetup.com/Hiking-Plus/pages/23772638/Frequently_Asked_Questions/)\n[Release of Liability](https://www.meetup.com/Hiking-Plus/pages/29622459/Is_Hiking_Dangerous/)

DESCRIPTION:BEFORE YOU WILL BE MOVED TO THE GOING LIST\, YOU WILL NEED TO UPDATE YOUR CDH PROFILE (The three questions must be answered with a “yes”) IF YOU HAVE NOT ALREADY DONE SO.\nNEED HELP:\n[go to: https://wp.me/P9MbG4-hC](go to: https:/ \nTHE QUEST: My pursuit of taking on Mount Baden Powell the hard way\, via The Big Horn Mine on my 75th birthday\, continues as I get my self in shape by taking on Mount Burnham\, Throop Peak and Mount Hawkins this week. \nJoin me and experience the thrill of hiking in the high country of the San Gabriel Mountains. We’ll be taking on Mount Burnham\, Throop Peak and Mount Hawkins via Dawson Saddle and finishing at Windy Gap. This trek is only 7.5 miles with a 2200′ overall gain consisting mostly of the PCT (Pacific Crest Trail). This will be accomplished by way of a car shuttle.\nThis all day trek is for those of you who are looking for something a lot more challenging than the average outing. No beginners please unless you’re in top physical condition. If you have some place to be later in the day\, this event will not work for you. \nWe will be setting a steady pace with several breaks while staying together all the way so as not to lose anyone. \nMICRO SPIKES AND POLES ARE RECOMMENDED \nDAY’S AGENDA \nSTART: After dropping a car/s off at The Windy Gap Trailhead we’ll drive to the Dawson trailhead where the trek begins to Mount Burnham. \nMOUNT BURNHAM: Standing at 8900′\, Mount Burnham is one of the highest peaks in the San Gabriel Mountains. It is in the Sheep Mountain Wilderness. It is named for Frederick Russell Burnham the famous American military scout who taught Scoutcraft to Robert Baden-Powell and became one of the inspirations for the founding of the Boy Scouts. From there we’ll double back towards Windy Gap\, picking up Throop Peak. \nTHROOP PEAK: Standing at 9118′\, Throop Peak was named for Amos G. Throop founder of Caltech formerly called Throop College. The peak marks the northwestern boundary of the Sheep Mountain Wilderness. Having bagged two peaks\, we’ll then take on a third\, Mount Hawkins. \nMOUNT HAWKINS: Standing at 8783′\, Mount Hawkins will be our final peak to conquer before heading down to Windy Gap. \nWINDY GAP: From this vantage point one faces into a seemingly perpetual wind that blows up from the broad canyon below. The benchmark here is posted at 7\,588′ \nMEETUP LOCATION AND TIME: 6:30 am at the meetup location on Hwy. \nTERRAIN: Popular trails as well as an extremely dropping down from Windy Gap to Hwy. 2. \nDISTANCE: 7.5 miles \nELEVATION RANGE: Gain of 2200′ and a loss of 2800′ \nTHE PACE: A comfortable pace no faster than the slowest hiker. \nLEVEL: Advanced Intermediate \nMY CELL NUMBER IS: 805-538-5972 \nDOGS ALLOWED: NO

SUMMARY:Onion Valley to Kearsarge Pass and beyond - day hike
DESCRIPTION:Onion Valley to Kearsarge Pass and beyond \nThis is an out and back day hike that will begin at 8:30am on Saturday\, July 9th. \nThis is an extremely popular trail known for its spectacular beauty and as a gateway to the Sierras. You can expect a mixture of shade and sunshine and beautiful lakes along the way to satisfy your need for wilderness eye candy. \nThere are two options for this hike\, one will take you to Kearsarge Pass which will be approximately 4.7 miles one way with about 2\,600 feet in elevation gain\, making this a 9.4 mile hike. The views from Kearsage Pass are the true highlight of the hike as you peer into Kings Canyon and see a wonderland of lakes and mountains displayed in the distance. The elevation at Keasarge Pass is 11\,760 feet. \nThe second option will take us down to Bullfrog Lake after reaching the high point of Kearsarge Pass. Bullfrog Lake is actually two lakes with elevations of 10\,700 and 11\,000. Taking the trail down to Bullfrog Lake into King’s Canyon National Park will make the hike approximately 11.6 miles total. \nKeep in mind that this is a high altitude hike that begins at 9\,185′ and you need to be prepared to recognize and respond to altitude sickness (AMS)\, if that happens to you. AMS is a serious and sometimes deadly condition. Please read more about altitude sickness here\, https://www.webmd.com/a-to-z-guides/altitude-sickness \nTo help with the acclimating to the high altitude\, I have two campsites reserved Gray’s Meadow (3 miles from the trailhead) the night before the hike (07/08) and the same date of the hike (07/09). If you sleep at the higher elevation\, it will help with acclimatization. I will post a separate event just for the camping\, if you care to join me. Otherwise\, with a start time of 8:30am\, it is possible to make the drive from Los Angeles in about 3 1/2 hours so you could come for just the hike and return home the same day. I will be camping on Saturday night so I don’t have to drive back after the hike. If enough people are interested\, we can have a post-hike group potluck on Saturday night. \nMISCELLANEOUS: Everyone who signs up for this event must have a recognizable profile photo. Also\, everyone goes to the wait list first and I will add you to the hike based on my knowledge of your hiking abilities. No plus ones. \nIMPORTANT\, PLEASE READ BELOW IN ITS ENTIRETY:\nI am a volunteer (i.e. not liable for the group). Safety is a priority for everyone in the group. Think of this as hiking with a group of friends.\nOutdoor sports and other events we plan can be inherently dangerous and accidents may happen. By participating in any posted event\, you’re taking responsibility for your own safety and well-being. The Valencia Hiking Crew Meetup Group and its organizers are not trained leaders and we do not confirm the qualifications of any of its members to lead or participate in trips. All participants take full responsibility for their own actions. If you choose to sign up for any Valencia Hiking Crew Meetup events\, you are releasing the Valencia Hiking Crew Meetup Group and it’s organizers from all liability in case of possible injuries as stated in paragraph 6.2 of the Meetup “Terms of Service” located on the bottom of the Meetup website. Your personal safety depends on your own judgment and experience. \nHope you can join me!
