SUMMARY:Wendy Lollipop
DESCRIPTION:**4.6 miles\, 1000′ gain. Easy Intermediate.** \nDifferent mapping apps give different directions for the same address\, and many have gotten lost relying on GPS. If you don’t know this location\, please look on a map to find this location before heading out\, and don’t rely only on GPS. This is the Wendy Trailhead\, where S. Wendy Dr. ends at Potrero Rd. \nFit beginners can still do it\, but they should be aware that there are several areas of extended incline. Nothing super steep\, just continuous and strenuous for many. \nThat’s OK\, because this is not a conditioning hike\, it’s a social hike. We’ll be stopping at various points to let people catch up. \nWe’ll start at the Wendy trailhead. There are many routes through this park\, so it will be important to listen to the hike leader about various points to stop and let others catch up for regrouping. We’ll be taking the route posted in the photo in this description. \nSlightly more than half way\, we’ll be stopping at a bench and overlook to have our traditional social event\, sharing snacks and beverages (https://www.meetup.com/Hiking-Plus/messages/boards/thread/50879772). \nIf you wish to return before the social event completes\, you are responsible for finding your own way out\, so study the map carefully. It’s only a mile and 100′ of gain\, if you make the correct turns. \n**The Route.** \nHike Distance: 4.6 miles\nGain: 1000′\nDistribution: Most of the incline is concentrated in the middle of this hike.\nDifficulty (https://www.meetup.com/Hiking-Plus/messages/boards/thread/50879781): Easy Intermediate.\nShape: Lollipop.\nPace: approx. 2.0 mph.\nTrail Type: Fire road\, double track\, single track.\nDuration: 3.5 hours\nDogs: There is a no dogs sign that we will pass.\nRestrooms: Yes\nDrinking Fountains: No.\nParking: Free along street.\nWhat to bring: 1 liter of water for every 3 miles. Hiking shoes/boots. Not required\, but recommended.\nFlashlight or headlamp. Sunscreen and/or hat as needed.\nSnacks and/or beverages to share (https://www.meetup.com/Hiking-Plus/messages/boards/thread/50879772). \nHosting Route: The host knows the route. A pic of the route has been posted as part of this description. \nNavigation: Host memory\, enhanced by GPS navigation as needed. \nHike type: Social. We won’t be hiking at a fast pace because this is a social hike\, not a conditioning hike. There is nothing wrong with stopping\, even if it means every 50 steps. See “How hard is this hike” in the discussion section (https://www.meetup.com/Hiking-Plus/messages/boards/thread/50879781). \nStops: The host may designate stopping points to let others catch up. This hike will include an extended stop for a snack and beverage (https://www.meetup.com/Hiking-Plus/messages/boards/thread/50879772) share at the half way point. We will stop at junctions to make sure everybody makes any turns or chooses the correct direction at splits\, else something will be used to mark the direction\, usually a large arrow made of baking soda. \nThere may not always be a sweeper designated to be the last hiker. Each hiker is responsible for knowing their capability\, only attending events where they are able to sustain the described pace\, for keeping up with the group sufficiently enough to make the turns and not get left behind\, and for making sure the host is notified if they are going to split from the group. \nGroup separation: Sometimes hikers wish to move significantly ahead and not wait at designated stopping points. Please let the host know. They are on their own regarding route and navigation. \n**Interesting Notes**\nHere are a couple plants you are sure to see on this hike: \n*Heartleaf Penstemon*\nLeaves are shiny and saw toothed\, shaped like hearts\, 2 to 6 centimeters long and arranged oppositely on the branches. Stems are red. Small scarlet red tubular flowers . \n*Yucca*\nWhite flowers on stalk. Stalk is often missing\, leaving only the spires from which it grows. Stalks are very strong and light\, so they make good walking sticks. Needles on end of spires. Chopped up root can be uses as shampoo. Roasted root can be eaten like a potato. Illegal to remove live stick in CA. Pronounced with short u. Dried leaves make good tinder. \nRoot can be chopped up and used as soap. To eat root\, remove skin and core\, boil 15 minutes. Then fry or bake. Flowers are mildly sweet. The fruit is also edible\, but bitter if not ripe. To access fibers: Soak for a month in water\, lightly pound leaves with rock or club\, or scrape skin off skin. Roll between hands\, then pull and separate fibers. Weave into cordage. \n**Directions:**\nWendy Trail Head\n4128 Potrero Rd\nThousand Oaks\, CA 91361\nCoordinates of trailhead: 34.154507\, -118.950095 \nFrom CA-118:\nCA-118 west for 8 miles.\nCA-23 south for 7.4 miles.\nUS-101 North for 2 miles.\nExit 45 Lynn Rd. and south/west for 2.5 miles.\nLeft on S. Wendy Dr. for 0.6 miles until it dead ends at Potrero Rd.\nPark on Potrero.\nTrailhead slightly to the left. \nFrom US-101 north/west of Wendy:\nUS-101 south\, exit Wendy Dr.\nSouth on Wendy Dr. for 3 miles until it dead ends at Potrero Rd.\nPark on Potrero.\nTrailhead slightly to the left. \nRelease of Liability: https://www.meetup.com/Hiking-Plus/pages/29622459/Is_Hiking_Dangerous/

SUMMARY:Salkantay Trek High Elevation Conditioning Hike (Mt. Baldy from Manker Flats).
DESCRIPTION:This hike serves as a conditioning hike for people who are doing the Salkantay Trek a couple of weeks later. Those doing the trek are encouraged to do this hike to avoid having any problem when trekking the Andean mountains of Peru. But those not doing the trek are also welcome to join us. \nThe plan is to meet at the trailhead before 6:30 a.m. and begin the hike at 7:00 a.m. \nStats: \nDistance: 9 miles \nElevation Gain: ~4\,000 ft. \nMax elevation : 10\,064 ft. \nRating: 8/10 Strenuous \nPace: Sauntering. Slow pace to get high elevation exposure as long as possible. \nTrail: Looped some pavement\, fire roads\, but mostly single track and rocky trails \nESSENTIALS: \n2 Liters of water (Minimum) \nSunscreen \nHat \nSnacks \nHiking Poles (Optional) \nLayered clothing (possibly windy & chilly at the summit) \nMoney for ski lift (optional) and grub from The Notch \nCheck the Weather (http://www.wunderground.com/cgi-bin/findweather/hdfForecast?query=91759&searchType=WEATHER) \nNOTE: \nThis is considered a high altitude hike and high altitude sickness\, AKA acute mountain sickness\, is a possibility. Good Physical health is important. The San Antonio Ski Hut/Baldy Bowl Trail is considered the most direct route to the summit of Mount Baldy (10\,064′). This climb is considered strenuous. \nAs you start up the fire road you will soon enjoy views of the San Antonio Falls. Continuing on you will pick-up a use trail that climbs northwest along San Antonio Canyon through Jeffrey and Lodgepole Pines eventually reaching the San Antonio Ski Hut. From here you stand at the base of the Baldy Bowl with its dramatic ridgeline which ascends as much as 1600 feet over the Ski Hut. Most people will then cross the bowl and follow the switchbacks up through the trees. Once you reach the top of the bowl continue on up to the summit where you will enjoy fine views of the San Gabriel Mountains including Mount Baden-Powell\, Iron Mountain\, Pine Mountain\, Dawson Peak\, Ontario Peak\, and many others. Looking south you will look down on the San Gabriel Valley and on exceptional days the Pacific Ocean and Catalina Island. \nMount San Antonio\, also known as Old Baldy or Mount Baldy\, at 10\,068 ft\, is the highest peak in the San Gabriel Mountains\, and the highest point in Los Angeles County. The peak\, which marks a boundary between San Bernardino County and Los Angeles County is called Baldy because of the absence of trees around the summit. Mt. Baldy is visible from much of Southern California and much of Southern California can be seen from it’s summit on a clear day. It is one of the most photographed objects of the Southern California landscape It’s snow covered peak has appeared on post cards and tourist literature for many years. There are four popular routes to the summit. All are considered moderate hikes of 8.5 to 13 miles round trip and anywhere from 3\,600 feet to 6\,000 feet of elevation gain. \nPLEASE – Know your limits and abilities. Bring and drink plenty of liquids when hiking. Check weather conditions and dress accordingly and be aware of your surroundings at all times. Watching out for snakes\, ticks\, uneven footing\, spectacular views\, beautiful fauna all while carrying on a conversation with awesome (usually) fellow hikers can be extremely hazardous\, rewarding and fun. \n******************************************************************* \nDISCLAIMER / RELEASE OF LIABILITY \nI am a volunteer (i.e. not liable for the group). Safety is a priority for everyone in the group. Think of this as hiking with a group of friends. \nOutdoor sports and other events we plan can be inherently dangerous and accidents may happen. By participating in any posted event\, you’re taking responsibility for your own safety and well-being. The Valencia Hiking Crew Meetup Group and its organizers are not trained leaders and we do not confirm the qualifications of any of its members to lead or participate in trips. All participants take full responsibility for their own actions. If you choose to sign up for any Valencia Hiking Crew Meetup events\, you are releasing the Valencia Hiking Crew Meetup Group and it’s organizers from all liability in case of possible injuries as stated in paragraph 6.2 of the Meetup “Terms of Service” located on the bottom of the Meetup website. Your personal safety depends on your own judgment and experience.

SUMMARY:Mt. Wilson Trail for Chili Cheese Dog
DESCRIPTION:The Cafe is opening and join me for a brisk hike for a chili-cheese dog (unclear if they have jalapenos). \nThe Numbers:\nDistance: 14 mi\nElevation Gain: 5000 ft\nRating: 8/10\nTrail: Single track\nParking: Street. Two important items: 2. Curb your tires 1. Keep the noise down so the neighbors don’t create parking rules. \n*** \nPLEASE – Know your limits and abilities. Bring snacks and drink plenty of liquids when hiking. Check weather conditions and dress accordingly and be aware of your surroundings at all times. Watching out for poison oak\, snakes\, ticks\, uneven footing\, spectacular views\, beautiful fauna all while interacting with awesome (usually) fellow hikers can be extremely hazardous\, rewarding and fun. \n*** \nVHC HIKE RATING SCALE \nRating a hike is subjective\, meaning the difficulty of a hike will be in direct relation to how often you hike and the type of hike you prefer. Keep in mind that any hike can have the following: un-even hiking surfaces\, various obstructions\, water and/or water crossings or bouldering and/or rock hopping. A great hike will have all of these! \n1 – A long walk \n2 – 4 mile hike w/little elevation gain \n3 – 5 mile hike w/up to1000 ft. elevation gain \n4 – 5+ mile hike w/up to1500 ft. elevation gain (heart rate increases at times) \n5 – 7+ mile hike w/over 1500 ft. elevation gain (heart rate increasing even more at times) \n6 – 7+ mile hike w/over 2000 ft. elevation gain (at times you might be trying to remember how to perform CPR) \n7 – 5+ mile hike w/over 2000 ft. elevation gain (at times you might be muttering expletives to yourself) \n8 – 10+ mile hike w/over 3500 ft. elevation gain (at times you might be angry with the hike leader) \n9 – 10+ mile hike w/over 5000 ft. elevation gain (at times you might be thinking of reporting the hike leader to the authorities) \n10 – Use your imagination \nClass 3 Scrambling: Scrambling or un-roped climbing. You must use your hands at times to hold the terrain or find your route. This may be caused by a combination of boulders\, steepness and extreme terrain. Some Class 3 routes have ropes in place for assistance. \n*** \nDISCLAIMER / RELEASE OF LIABILITY \nIMPORTANT\, PLEASE READ BELOW IN ITS ENTIRETY: \nI am a volunteer (i.e. not liable for the group). SUMMARY:Bear Divide to Placerita Car Shuttle
DESCRIPTION:Arrive at the Placerita Nature Center and be prepared to depart at 8:30 am sharp for a shuttle to the Bear Divide Trailhead. \nThe trail immediately heads uphill and continues to do so for 2.2 miles. This is about the only elevation gain of the hike. Much of this is through a lovely shaded woodland. We emerge out of this forested area to the top of a ridge where Fire Camp #9 is. This camp was originally built for military use during the cold war. It now houses the people who fight the wildfires for us. We can take a short break and regroup at the water tank. From the camp you can look north and see the Canyon Country part of Valencia or look south and see the northeast part of the San Fernando valley. There are restrooms at the camp. \nFrom Camp #9 we head west along a fire road until we reach Wilson Saddle which many of you are familiar with. VHC has gone to this point several times. We will stop here for a longer break and snack/brunch. \nThe descent back to Walker Ranch will be from Wilson Saddle along Los Pinetos trail. From here we’ll head back to the cars at the nature center. \nSTATS \nDistance: ~ 9.5 miles \nGain: 1300 ft \nRating: 5/10\, no sweep \nTrail: single track\, some fire toad \nParking pass: NO \nDirections \nExit the 14 Fwy at Placerita Canyon Rd and go South to the park entrance on the right. Parking is free. Map above is accurate. We will leave some cars here where we will end our hike. Car shuttle to start at Bear Divide Trailhead. \n**************************\n************************** \nThe Fine Print \nPLEASE – Know your limits and abilities. \nThe Farzan Rule: Posted hike times are the time the hike starts or we leave from a posted shuttle location. I’m aware other Meetup groups offer a grace period for late arrivals; we don’t. It’s your responsibility to know the location of the meeting spot and be there and ready to participate at the posted time. If you have any concerns about the directions feel free to contact the organizer of the event\, preferably in advance of the event and not at the start time. I’m of the opinion that it’s not fair to delay an event when the majority of attendees have arrived on-time. (so named after a conversation I had with a certain un-named member) \nRSVP’s: If you RSVP for an event be responsible and update your RSVP if your plans change. If your plans change at the last second and you’re not able to update your RSVP also let us know. In my opinion a no-show is someone who has no regard for following the guidelines we request from our members and will risk being removed from future events that have a limit. \nVHC HIKE RATING SCALE \nRating a hike is subjective\, meaning the difficulty of a hike will be in direct relation to how often you hike and the type of hike you prefer. Keep in mind that any hike can have the following: un-even hiking surfaces\, various obstructions\, water and/or water crossings or bouldering and/or rock hopping. A great hike will have all of these! \n1 – A long walk \n2 – 4 mile hike w/little elevation gain \n3 – 5 mile hike w/up to 1000 ft. elevation gain \n4 – 5+ mile hike w/up to 1500 ft. elevation gain (heart rate increases at times) \n5 – 7+ mile hike w/over 1500 ft. elevation gain (heart rate increasing even more at times) \n6 – 7+ mile hike w/over 2000 ft. elevation gain (at times you might be trying to remember how to perform CPR) \n7 – 5+ mile hike w/over 2000 ft. elevation gain (at times you might be muttering expletives to yourself) \n8 – 10+ mile hike w/over 3500 ft. elevation gain (at times you might be angry with the hike leader) \n9 – 10+ mile hike w/over 5000 ft. elevation gain (at times you might be thinking of reporting the hike leader to the authorities) \n10 – Use your imagination \nClass 3 Scrambling: Scrambling or un-roped climbing. You must use your hands at times to hold the terrain or find your route. This may be caused by a combination of boulders\, steepness and extreme terrain. Some Class 3 routes have ropes in place for assistance. \nDISCLAIMER / RELEASE OF LIABILITY \nIMPORTANT\, PLEASE READ BELOW IN ITS ENTIRETY: \nI am a volunteer (i.e. not liable for the group). Safety is a priority for everyone in the group. Think of this as hiking with a group of friends. \nOutdoor sports and other events we plan can be inherently dangerous and accidents may happen. By participating in any posted event\, you’re taking responsibility for your own safety and well-being. The VHC Meetup Group and its organizers are not trained leaders and we do not confirm the qualifications of any of its members to lead or participate in trips. All participants take full responsibility for their own actions. If you choose to sign up for any VHC Meetup events\, you are releasing the VHC Meetup Group and it’s organizers from all liability in case of possible injuries as stated in paragraph 6.2 of the Meetup “Terms of Service” located on the bottom of the Meetup website. Your personal safety depends on your own judgment and experience. \n**************************\n**************************\n**************************\n**************************\n**************************\n**************************

SUMMARY:Danielson Monument potluck hike
DESCRIPTION:**[6.5 miles\, 1300′ gain\, intermediate](https://www.meetup.com/Hiking-Plus/messages/boards/thread/50879781)** \nLet’s enjoy hiking to the Danielson Monument in the Boney Mountain Wilderness and potluck! \nThe trail is filled with the colors of spring.\nWe’ll hike up to Danielson monument and enjoy potluck and “Peace\, Love and Joy.” \nPlease bring food and drinks to share.\nWe’ll have our typical **[snack-share](https://www.meetup.com/Hiking-Plus/messages/boards/thread/50879772) social event at the top** for 60-90 minutes before heading back the way we came. Please bring some food and drink to share. \n**You will see several plants of note:** \n***[Tree Tobacco](https://secure.meetupstatic.com/photos/event/e/1/1/a/highres_502857626.jpeg)*** \nThe Cahuilla Indians used the leaves interchangeably with other tobacco species in hunting rituals and as a poultice to treat swellings\, bruises\, cuts\, wounds\, boils\, sores\, inflamed throat\, and swollen glands. It does not contain nicotine. \nIt contains anabasine\, a similar compound\, which is highly toxic to humans and animals. It is more toxic than nicotine. Ingestion of the leaves can be fatal. It is being investigated for use as a biofuel. All parts of this plant are toxic. Used as an insecticide. Do not smoke. \n***[Elderberry](https://secure.meetupstatic.com/photos/event/e/1/1/b/highres_502857627.jpeg)*** \nThe blue or purple berries are gathered and made into elderberry wine\, jam\, syrup\, and pies. The entire flower cluster can be dipped in batter and fried while petals can be eaten raw or made into a fragrant and tasty tea. Spit out the seeds. Elderflower water is also used in perfumes and sweets. \nMost agree that they do need to be cooked if you are going to eat more than just a few out of hand. That’s because they have a small amount of cyanide producing glycosides\, which are released upon digestion. Fully ripe black berries are not toxic and you can eat as many as you like. Boiling or baking takes care of any “toxic” issue as does drying raw berries. \nHike Distance: 6.5 miles\nGain: 1300′\nDifficulty: [Intermediate]((https://www.meetup.com/Hiking-Plus/messages/boards/thread/50879781))\nShape: Out and back.\nPace: approx. 2.0 mph.\nTrail Type: Double track\, single track.\nDuration: 3 hours (hiking only)\nDogs: Not allowed in the state park\nRestrooms: No\nDrinking Fountains: No.\nParking: Free along the street. \n**Meet at: Wendy Trail Head**\n4128 Potrero Rd\nThousand Oaks\, CA 91361\nWhere S. SUMMARY:Long Canyon - Back to Front
DESCRIPTION:**4.5 miles\, 1000′ gain\, Easy Intermediate**\nThe address given\, is not the address of the hike. It is a nearby address that may cause your GPS to drive past the trailhead. \nThere are several extended inclines and a couple short but steep climbs. Fit beginners can do this hike\, but they may be cursing some of the extended and steeper climbs. That’s OK\, because we’ll be stopping at various points to regroup and this is not a conditioning hike. It is a social hike. \nStarting from the Long Canyon trailhead parking lot\, we’ll immediate cross the street to the north side\, move along the street for about 1/4 mile\, then head up the back side for 3/4 mile until we come to a bench. We’ll regroup there and catch our breath before heading along the ridge and back down to the road for about a mile. \nWe’ll regroup again\, then cross the road and head along it back towards the parking lot for about 1000′\, where we’ll turn left to enter into the front side. We’ll follow a fire road for 1.3 miles until just before it dead ends\, where we’ll make a left (not right!) and head 1000′ to the 5-points intersection. \nWe’ll make a hard right\, go another 1000′\, and stop at a bench to have a snack share event. After\, we continue 3/4 mile down to the parking lot. \nA picture of the route is posted at the end of the description. \n**Interesting Notes:** \n*Turkey Mullein* \nSmashed leaves can be thrown into the water to stupefy fish\, causing them to float to the surface\, a practice illegal in most states. The seeds are not toxic to birds and are enjoyed especially by doves and wild turkeys. \nAncient Greeks rolled and dried the leaves\, then used them as wicks for oil lamps. It stalks were used as torches burned at funerals. Many tribes employed the use of mullein leaf tea for coughs\, colds\, and rheumatism. They considered it to be analgesic\, anti-inflammatory\, antispasmodic\, and expectorant. The astringent and demulcent properties of the leaf tea were found useful in cases of diarrhea. \n*Wild Oats* \nThe mature seed of the plant is used as a cereal grain. All oats have edible seeds\, although they are small and hard to harvest in most species. Oats are hard to tell apart from weedy relatives\, so the term “sowing wild oats” came to be used to describe unprofitable activities and destructive sexual liaisons of an unmarried young male that could result in children being born out of wedlock. \n**Hike** \nDistance: 4.5 miles\nGain: 1000\nDistribution: A couple extended inclines and a couple shorter but steeper inclines.\nDifficulty (https://www.meetup.com/Hiking-Plus/messages/boards/thread/50879781): Easy Intermediate.\nShape: Loop\, clockwise.\nPace: 2.0 mph.\nTrail Type: Fire road\, single and double track. Areas of sand\, gravel\, and rock\, some of it rugged.\nTrail Variations:\nThe beginning is a flat walk.\nThe middle will have 2 extended inclines of about 1000 steps and a couple shorter inclines that are steeper but only about 150 steps.\nThe end is downhill\, but somewhat steep.\nDuration: 3.5 hours\nDogs: Yes.\nRestrooms: No\nDrinking Fountains: No.\nParking: Free in the paved parking area in front of the trail head. \n**What to bring:**\n1 liter of water for every 3 miles.\nSnacks and/or beverages to share (https://www.meetup.com/Hiking-Plus/messages/boards/thread/50879772).\nHiking shoes preferred\, but athletic shoes will be OK.\nFlashlight or headlamp.\nSunscreen and/or hat as needed. \n**Hosting** \nRoute: The host knows the route.\nNavigation: Host memory\, enhanced by GPS navigation as needed.\nHike type: Social.\nWe won’t be hiking at a fast pace because this is a social hike\, not a conditioning hike. There is nothing wrong with stopping\, even if it means every 50 steps. \nNote the picture of the route. Those that wish to return immediately instead of hanging around during the snack and beverage share\, should memorize the below route so they can safely return on their own. \n**Stops:**\nThe host may designate stopping points to let others catch up. This hike will include an extended stop for a snack and beverage share at the half way point. \nWe will stop at junctions to make sure everybody makes any turns or chooses the correct direction at splits\, else something will be used to mark the direction\, usually a large arrow made of baking soda. There may not always be a sweeper designated to be the last hiker. \nEach hiker is responsible for knowing their capability\, only attending events where they are able to sustain the described pace\, for keeping up with the group sufficiently enough to make the turns and not get left behind\, and for making sure the host is notified if they are going to split from the group. \n**Group separation:**\nSometimes hikers wish to move significantly ahead and not wait at designated stopping points. Please let the host know. They are on their own regarding route and navigation. \n**Directions:** \nWhere of Long Canyon Rd. and S. Wood Ranch Pkwy. intersect in Simi Valley. There is a free paved parking lot at the trailhead on the southwest corner. \nFrom CA-23 and I-101:\nNorth CA-23\, exit Olsen Rd.\nRight (east) on Olsen Rd.\, which becomes Madera Rd.\, for 2 miles.\nRight (south) on N. Wood Ranch Pkwy.\, which becomes S. Wood Ranch Pkwy.\, for 2 miles.\nRight at dead end (intersection with Long Canyon Rd.) and immediate left into parking lot.\nTrailhead at the opposite corner. \nFrom CA-118 and CA-27:\nWest CA-118\, exit 23 onto 1st St.\nLeft (south) on 1st St.\, which becomes Long Canyon Rd.\, for 5 miles.\nCross at dead end (intersection with S. Wood Ranch Pkwy.) and immediate left into parking lot.\nTrailhead at the opposite corner. \nCoordinates of trailhead: 34.228330\, -118.803130\nAddress of a nearby house: 572 Bannister Way\, Simi Valley\, CA 93065 \nArrive early\, because sometimes the parking lot gets full. If this happens\, we’ll need another 15 minutes to carpool from a nearly parking lot. \n**Disclaimer / Release of Liability:** https://www.meetup.com/Hiking-Plus/pages/29622459/Is_Hiking_Dangerous/

SUMMARY:SANTA BARBARA COASTAL RANGE SERIES - ARLINGTON PEAK via a new route
DESCRIPTION:SANTA BARBARA COAST- SERIES OF HIKES \nWe will hike together as a group and enjoy the beauty that this series offers. \nSANTA BARBARA COASTAL RANGE TREK – Arlington Peak \nContinuing our Santa Barbara Coastal series\, we’ll do this one as an in and out trek. THIS WILL BE AN EXTREMELY TOUGHER TREK than the first ones in the series\, so please don’t sign on if rock scrambling along a steep ridge bothers you. Also\, don’t sign on if you have no experience with this type of terrain. We’ll be starting our hike at the Tunnel Trail’s trailhead at the end of Tunnel Rd. The fun begins in less than a mile along the Tunnel Trail\, as we leave it and head up a steep ridge line following a “use” trail and rock scrambling all the way to Arlington Peak. This will not be along the Dragonback ridge\, but instead\, along a new trail along a southern access to Arlington Peak. After that\, those that have a lot of energy left\, can tackle Cathedral Peak (an extra mile round trip) as an option which will involve additional scrambling as the rest kick back\, wait and rest.\nThere are three ways to get to Arlington Peak.\n1) It’s northern ridge from La Cumbre Peak\n2) Its Eastern ridge long the dreaded Dragonback\n3) Its southern ridge\nCDH has taken the first two routes and now will be taking the relatively new third route. \nThis area is a little over an hours drive from Thousand Oaks\, so keep that in mind when signing on. Devote the whole day to this and don’t sign on if you have other commitments later that day and be aware of the difficulties this route entails. \nAfter the hike\, those that are interested in stopping off at the Nugget restaurant in Summerland\, can join me. \nMEETUP LOCATION AND TIME: The Tunnel Trail trailhead at the end of Tunnel Road no later than 8:00 a.m.\nhttps://www.google.com/maps/place/34%C2%B027’51.8%22N+119%C2%B042’45.9%22W/@34.4644014\,-119.7149437\,17z/data=!3m1!4b1!4m6!3m5!1s0x0:0x9ebc2c2c8f7084f4!7e2!8m2!3d34.4643972!4d-119.7127547 \nPay attention to street parking signs in that area. Please be quite when arriving\, since this is a residential area. \nEARLIER MEETUP TIME\, LOCATION AND DIRECTIONS: For those out my way\, we can meet at the Thousand Oaks Park and Ride at the corner of Rancho Rd. and Haaland Dr. NO LATER THAN 6:30 a.m. WE WILL BE LEAVING FROM THERE AT 6:40 a.m.. Have a full tank of gas and be willing to drive if needed. Those that don’t drive can help pay for gas. It’s about an 1 hour 15 minute drive to our meetup at the end of Tunnel Rd. in Santa Barbara.\nhttps://www.google.com/maps/place/34%C2%B010’26.7%22N+118%C2%B051’38.8%22W/@34.1740754\,-118.8629737\,17z/data=!3m1!4b1!4m6!3m5!1s0x0:0xd0cb7d8a6208886e!7e2!8m2!3d34.1740705!4d-118.8607853 \nDISTANCE: 6.2 miles \nELEVATION GAIN/LOSS: 2250’/2250′ \nTHE PACE: No faster than the slowest Trekker \nDURATION: 6+ hours or whenever the slowest finishes \nTERRAIN: Single\, double track and “use” trails along with rock scrambling \nLEVEL: Strong Intermediate Trekker who loves to rock scramble \nMY CELL# IS 805-358-5972

SUMMARY:Las Llajas - Suitable for beginners
DESCRIPTION:**5 miles\, 700′ gain\, Beginner** \nThis hike is a great trail for beginners because all the elevation gain is distributed. It is a walk down a rolling fire road through a really cool canyon\, and you will find no difficult or extended elevation climbs. \nThis is one of my favorite trails for people new to hiking. It is an “out-and-back” hike\, where we return the way we came\, so there is virtually no chance of getting lost. You may be amazed that such a place exists right here in Simi Valley. \nFrom the trail head\, we’ll walk down an asphalt path for several hundred steps and turn right onto a gravel fire road. After that\, there will be no more turns. We may take a detour up a trail off to the right to see the first bee sanctuary\, then return back to the fire road. \nWe’ll continue on the fire-road for about 1 mile. We’ll stop there (in the shade if summer) to allow others to catch up. \nThen we’ll take a 200′ detour to the left to see another bee sanctuary\, which continues in a half circle back to the fire road. Even though I haven’t seen any actual bees there in a while\, it’s still interesting to see. \nWe’ll continue for another 1.5 miles and wait there for anybody that needs to catch up\, and share snacks and/or beverages. \nThere is a lot of wild life along this trail because it is the only area with water for quite a distance. \nThis is a social hike\, not a conditioning hike. Still\, for those that aren’t interested in the beverage and/or snack share and want more of a workout\, just continue on for another mile (15-20 minutes) at a fast pace\, then turn around and come back. That’s about how long we’ll be before packing up and heading back the way we came. \n**Interesting Notes:** \n*Tree Tobacco (Nicotiana glauca)* \nElongated yellow flowers. The Cahuilla Indians used the leaves interchangeably with other tobacco species in hunting rituals and as a poultice to treat swellings\, bruises\, cuts\, wounds\, boils\, sores\, inflamed throat\, and swollen glands. \nIt does not contain nicotine. It contains anabasine\, a similar compound\, which is highly toxic to humans and animals. It is more toxic than nicotine. Ingestion of the leaves can be fatal. It is being investigated for use as a biofuel. All parts of this plant are toxic. \nUsed as an insecticide. Do not smoke it. \n**The Hike**\nDistance: 5 miles\nGain: 700′\nDistribution: Well distributed.\nDifficulty: (https://www.meetup.com/Hiking-Plus/messages/boards/thread/50879781) Beginner.\nShape: Out and Back.\nPace: 2.0 mph.\nTrail Type: Fire road.\nTrail Variations: Rolling stroll.\nDuration: 3.5 hours\nDogs: Yes.\nRestrooms: No\nDrinking Fountains: No.\nParking: Free along street. \n**What to bring:**\n1 liter of water for every 3 miles.\nSnacks and/or beverages to share (https://www.meetup.com/Hiking-Plus/messages/boards/thread/50879772)\nHiking shoes preferred\, but athletic shoes will be OK.\nFlashlight or headlamp.\nSunscreen and/or hat as needed. \n**Hosting** \nRoute: The host knows the route. A pic of the route has been posted as part of this description.\nNavigation: Host memory\, enhanced by GPS navigation as needed. \nHike type: Social.\nWe won’t be hiking at a fast pace because this is a social hike\, not a conditioning hike. There is nothing wrong with stopping\, even if it means every 50 steps. \nStops:\nThe host may designate stopping points to let others catch up. This hike will include an extended stop for a snack and beverage share at the half way point. This hike does not have any junctions or turns once past the initial path down to the fire road. \nSince this hike is out-and-back on a wide fire road with no turns after the first 500′\, one cannot get lost. Therefore\, for this hike\, it will be acceptable to split from the group moving faster\, slower\, or otherwise at your own pace. \nGroup separation:\nSometimes hikers wish to move significantly ahead and not wait at designated stopping points. Please let the host know. They are on their own regarding route and navigation. \n**Directions:** \nLas Llajas Canyon Trail\n5715 Evening Sky Dr\nSimi Valley\, CA 93063 \nFrom the west: 23-N to 118-E\, Exit 29 Yosemite.\nFrom the east: 118-W\, Exit 29 Yosemite.\nHead north on Yosemite for 1.25 miles. Turn right (east) on Evening Sky Drive and proceed for 0.5 miles. See the trail head on the left. Park along the street. \n**Release of Liability:** https://www.meetup.com/Hiking-Plus/pages/29622459/Is_Hiking_Dangerous/

SUMMARY:Vasquez Rocks in Antelope Valley
DESCRIPTION:BEFORE YOU WILL BE MOVED TO THE GOING LIST\, YOU WILL NEED TO UPDATE YOUR CDH PROFILE (The three questions must be answered with a “yes”) IF YOU HAVE NOT ALREADY DONE SO.\nNEED HELP? Go to: [https://wp.me/P9MbG4-hC](https://wp.me/P9MbG4-hC) \n**High winds\, heavy rain\, and hot weather will cancel this hike.** \nThis is a slow paced\, stress free\, social hike\, at 5 miles with an elevation gain of about 554’. We hike together as a team and leave no one behind. \nWere trekkin’ Vasquez Rocks and the PCT (Pacific Crest Trail)\, located in the high desert near Agua Dulce Springs\, where numerous movies\, commercials\, music videos and TV shows were filmed\, such as my favorite when Star Trek’s Captain Kirk battled the lizard “Gorn.” [https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=EVCarQr_Z2s](https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=EVCarQr_Z2s). The park features spectacular angled\, jagged red rock formations. Vasquez got its name after one of California’s most notorious bandits\, Tiburcio Vasquez\, in 1874 he used these rocks to elude capture by law enforcement. \nWe will meet at the visitor’s center at 9:15am with a start time precisely at 9:30am. \nIf there are not parking spots available at the visitor’s center\, keep driving down to the dirt parking lots\, you’ll find more room there. Please arrive earlier\, or after the hike if you’d like to walk through the visitor center (hours: 8-4) and learn more about the geology of this area. \nThere are restrooms and a water fountain at the Visitor’s Center. \nFrom the visitor’s center we will make our way to the famous rock formations and take some time to explore and climb them. I will point out where Captain Kirk and the Gorn stood and take our group picture there. \nWe will head to the Pacific Crest Trail (PCT) and descend down into the canyons\, to the wildlife tunnel that crosses below Highway 14. We will go through the tunnel and enjoy the scenery before turning around. Back at the canyons\, we will take a break for snacks/lunch and do a little exploring. After our break\, we will ascend above the rocks (most of the elevation gain is here)\, and make our way back to the visitor center. \nBring 2 liters of water\, snacks/lunch\, sunscreen\, hats\nWear good hiking shoes/boots \n* Distance: 5 miles\, loop in the shape of a kite\, see trail map in the photo gallery.\n* Time: 9:15 – 12:30.\n* Elevation Gain: about 554′\n* Difficulty: Fit beginner/intermediate\n* Dogs: Leashed\, per State law\n* Restrooms: At the Park Center\n* Water Fountain: At the Park Center\n* Parking: Free in the parking lot\n* Known Dangers: Rattlesnakes\, slip-‘n-fall. \n**ADDRESS**\nVasquez Rocks Natural Area Park\n10700 Escondido Canyon Rd\, Agua Dulce\, CA 91350 \nGoogle Coordinates: 34.489195\, -118.320966\nGoogle Map: https://www.google.com/maps/place/34%C2%B029’21.1%22N+118%C2%B019’15.5%22W/@34.4891994\,-118.3231547\,921m/data=!3m2!1e3!4b1!4m5!3m4!1s0x0:0x5cc23f9f2166eb15!8m2!3d34.489195!4d-118.320966?hl=en&authuser=0 \n**DRIVING DIRECTIONS** \n* Head north on I-5 toward Santa Clarita valley.\n* Take exit 162 for State Route 14 North (Antelope Freeway) going toward Lancaster/Palmdale.\n* At about 14.3 miles take exit 15 for Agua Dulce Canyon Road\n* continue about 5 minutes to the Vasquez Rocks Natural Area Park.

This trail is a nice wide trail that starts to cimb from the parking lot. It continues with both inclines and level sections until you begin your finish climb to the top. Once you have reached the top we will veer off the main trail to a side trail that will take to the actual peak of Rocky Peak. Where we will be rewarded with a peak marker a register box and some beautiful views… I have attached the AllTrails link for directions\, stats and photos….The AllTrails link is not to the summit so the trail miles and elevation is listed below…https://www.alltrails.com/trail/us/california/rocky-peak-summit-trail \nTrail out and back\nRated moderate\nMileage 5.9\nElevation gain 1368\nDogs are able to use this trail but there is a scramble to the peak\nParking free dirt lot and road side \nAs of now there is no sweeper for this hike so please know if you feel you can not finish for any reason please turn back early. \nPlease check back on hike info as rain\, heat advisory\, strong winds or low attendance may cause the hike to be rescheduled \nWe will always follow Jim’s Golden Rules: \n1. Hike your own hike\n2. Please stop at every junction and split to wait for others to catch up \nPlease remember to bring your face covering and all essentials you’ll need for a hike. \nAnd last….The Organizer\, Assistant Organizer and Event host in this group are not professional guides. The function of the organizer is only to organize the trip. Each person who signs up for a Event is responsible for his or her own safety and the safety of his or her guest. Remember this is your hike all responsibilities are of your own once you attend please be aware of your limits.

SUMMARY:Mt. McCoy - Cross Lit Hike
DESCRIPTION:Easy Intermediate\, 3 miles\, 700′ gain. \nA special treat: The cross will be lit! The Rotary Club lights the cross for the week from Palm Sunday to Easter Sunday. \nWe’ll meet in the parking lot at the northeast corner of Madera and Royal\, just south of the Donut Delite\, on the east side of the Clinicas office. We’ll walk from there to the trailhead at 2 Washburn St. where it meets Los Amigos Ave. \nOther groups may be doing this same hike starting at other times\, but we’ll start at 6:30p. Sunset time is 7:24p\, so our hike up will be in daylight and we should be arriving near sunset. \nThe Hike: \nWhile I rate this hike “Easy end of the Intermediate Spectrum” due to the 1 mile continuous incline that can get exhausting\, a fit beginner can easily complete it. \nWe cross Madera and continue through the neighborhood for about 1500′\, to the intersection of Washburn St. and Los Amigos Ave (https://www.google.com/maps/place/2+Washburn+St\,+Simi+Valley\,+CA+93065/@34.2645734\,-118.8010877\,18z/data=%213m1%214b1%214m5%213m4%211s0x80e82ee581e79e9f:0x42c324cfa0d16fd2%218m2%213d34.2645585%214d-118.7999842). Then we enter a path behind the houses and proceed for 250′ to the entrance. So far\, there will have been very little elevation gain. \nWe’ll enter a series of switchbacks (zig-zag trail) for 1.2 miles to a large cross at the top. This is a steady climb across the face of the hill\, always in full view of the neighborhood below. Beginners may find this climb difficult to continue at a fast pace. There is nothing wrong with slowing down while faster hikers move ahead\, or resting for a minute several times during this climb. \nIt may seem easy to get lost because there are many different cross-paths up the face of this hill\, but they all lead to the same place. Generally\, whenever there is a choice of “left or right”\, we take the easier and more worn path. If you happen to find yourself alone and take a wrong turn (aka steep cut)\, all paths lead up. \nAt the top by the cross\, we’ll enjoy the gorgeous 360 degree views and share beverages and/or snacks (https://www.meetup.com/Hiking-Plus/messages/boards/thread/50879772). \nInteresting Notes \nHere are a couple plants you are sure to see on this hike: \nBlack Sage \nMultiple brown buttons going up the top of the stalk\, that may have white flowers. Green leaves. Purple or white flowers that are dark brown as they dry on the plant. Squish the leaves and smell. \nA rare and sought after Black sage honey is also made from the honey of bees that pollinate the Black sage plant. Black sage is utilized in the culinary world as an aromatic and flavorful herb. It can be used in recipes wherever traditional sage is called for\, however keep in mind that foraged Black sage has a much stronger flavor than that of traditional store bought sage. \nIts flavor goes well with winter squashes\, brown butter\, poultry\, venison\, pears\, cheese\, potatoes and other herbs such as rosemary and thyme. Use fresh in a variety of different preparations or leaves. Can be dried and stored for future use as a dried herb. Black sage was used traditionally by Native Americans known as the Chumash people to form an herbal soak for the bath to be used in the treatment of bodily pain\, specifically for the feet and lower legs. \nPurple Sage \nGrey-green leaves. Aromatic when crushed. Purple flowers. Aka\, Tobacco Sage\, with mild hallucinogenic properties when smoked. Can be used as a spice or made into a tea. Tea has medicinal affects: Antiviral\, gargle for sore throats\, reduce hay fever symptoms and other drying actions. \nDistance: 3 miles (round trip)\nElevation Gain: 700′\nDifficulty: Easy Intermediate (https://www.meetup.com/Hiking-Plus/messages/boards/thread/50879781)\nDuration: 3 1/2 hours\nPace: 2.0 mph\nDogs: Yes.\nRestrooms: Yes – at nearby places of business\nDrinking Fountains: Yes – at nearby places of business\nParking: Free\nTrail: Mostly single-track\, excellent condition\nHiking shoes preferred\, but athletic shoes will be OK. \nWhat to Bring:\n1-2 liters of water.\nSnacks and/or beverages to share (https://www.meetup.com/Hiking-Plus/messages/boards/thread/50879772).\nHiking shoes preferred\, but athletic shoes will be OK.\nFlashlight or headlamp. \nDisclaimer / Release of Liability:\nhttps://www.meetup.com/Hiking-Plus/pages/29622459/Is_Hiking_Dangerous/

SUMMARY:Kennedy Ridge Trail Exploratory (Ojai)
DESCRIPTION:## Details \nBEFORE YOU WILL BE MOVED TO THE GOING LIST\, YOU WILL NEED TO UPDATE YOUR CDH PROFILE (The three questions must be answered with a “yes”) IF YOU HAVE NOT ALREADY DONE SO.\nNEED HELP:\ngo to: [https://wp.me/P9MbG4-hC](https://wp.me/P9MbG4-hC) \nCome and join me on this exploratory within the Santa Ynez mountains. I’ve hiked this trail many times in the past\, but it’s been a very long time since I’ve done it and I’ve been dying to see how it has changed over the years. Now is a good time to hike it before the heat. Weather report says it is will be 67 degrees out there in Ojai. The hike will be exposed! So the temperature will be at least ten degrees hotter so I recommend bringing at least 3 liters of water plus plenty of electrolytes. Back in the day I helped cut through this old overgrown forgotten trail along the Kennedy Ridge that reached up a mile over on to the Camino Cielo ridge line. Since then the trail has been cut through four more miles. At the time there were only 4 picnic benches along the way up. Now there are 10! I don’t plan on hiking to all 10 benches\, maybe only to the 5th bench. I don’t plan on making this hike too long either\, maybe 8 miles or less out and back. This will reach us to Camino Cielo ridge and a little beyond a mile or two. The views are great! and some boulders to climb! We will start the hike at the Oso trailhead in the Ventura River Preserve to the actual trailhead Rice Canyon Rd. to the Kennedy Ridge connection and on our way up a mile or so steep up to Camino Cielo.\nMy cell # 805-208-3966 \nMEETUP LOCATION AND TIME: Oso trailhead in the Ventura River Preserve at 8:00 am.\n[https://www.google.com/maps/place/34%C2%B027’31.6%22N+119%C2%B017’25.4%22W/@34.458764\,-119.2909502\,207m/data=!3m2!1e3!4b1!4m6!3m5!1s0x0:0x8a7dded77b87d15c!7e2!8m2!3d34.4587638!4d-119.2904011](https://www.google.com/maps/place/34%C2%B027’31.6%22N+119%C2%B017’25.4%22W/@34.458764\,-119.2909502\,207m/data=!3m2!1e3!4b1!4m6!3m5!1s0x0:0x8a7dded77b87d15c!7e2!8m2!3d34.4587638!4d-119.2904011) \nDISTANCE: 8 miles \nELEVATION GAIN: 2500′

SUMMARY:Natoma Loop - Vanalden Caves - Vanalden Vista
DESCRIPTION:The **Natoma Loop Trail** is a 1.7 mile lightly trafficked loop located in Woodland Hills. But anything less than a couple miles is not worth getting up for so we’ll extend the loop into the cool side of Mulholland and ramble about a network of little-used trails. We’ll visit the **Vanalden Caves** and take a break on **Vanalden Vista.** \n**NOTE**: On our last visit here one of my secret trails was blocked by tree branches and scrub. Since then the HWD trail crew has cleaned it up and trail is now passable. \n*Hike is about 4-5 miles and rated MEDIUM*. See [Hike Rating guide here](https://www.hikingwithdean.com/hike-rating-guide/): \nDirections \nProceed to the south end of Natoma Ave and park on right side of street in dirt lot. \nThe Organizers and members of Hiking With Dean are not professional leaders\, guides\, or mountaineers. SUMMARY:Tapo Canyon Tar Pits - Easy Intermediate
DESCRIPTION:**[5.4 miles\, 1050′ gain\, Easy Intermediate](https://www.meetup.com/Hiking-Plus/messages/boards/thread/50879781)** \nThis hike is one of the most beautiful hikes in Simi Valley. There are 3 extended inclines\, about 1000 steps each\, on fire road. They are not especially steep\, but they do continue for some time\, which is why it is rated “Easy Intermediate.” There are also several small hills of 100 steps or less. \nThe extended inclines will get the blood pumping during this lollipop hike. We’ll be moving through the famous Tapo Canyon and visiting natural tar pits that bubble up from the ground. \nThe first pit is really a puddle that looks like someone spilled a couple 55-gallon drums of tar that was later contained using a spill rope. The next two are a little larger\, again\, contained by spill ropes to keep the sticky black tar from getting on the trail. \nFrom the trail head\, we’ll start on a leisurely stroll for about 0.6 miles\, followed by a steady climb for the next mile\, completing the first extended incline. \nWe’ll turn left at the junction\, climb a small hill of a couple hundred steps\, and then head down for 1.5 miles. \nWe’ll make a right turn down a smaller trail and go for about 100 yards until we reach the tar pits. After looking around for a bit\, we’ll head back\, and after 0.25 miles\, we’ll come to another junction where we will stop and [share snacks and beverages](https://www.meetup.com/Hiking-Plus/messages/boards/thread/50879772). \nFor the return\, we’ll turn left and there will be a steady climb for about 3/4 of a mile to another junction. We’ll turn left again and return down for about 1.4 miles to complete the lollipop. \n**Interesting Notes:** \n*[Yellow Star Thistle](https://secure.meetupstatic.com/photos/event/2/0/e/6/highres_501188422.jpeg)* \nThorny. Also called yellow cockspur and golden star thistle. Generally considered a weed. Long-term ingestion by horses causes a neurological disorder known as chewing disease\, a lethal lesion of the nigropallidal region of the brain. This disease is expressed as a twitching of the lips\, tongue flicking\, and involuntary chewing. Permanent brain damage is possible\, and affected horses may starve to death. Used in Turkish folk medicine for the treatment of ulcers. In a laboratory study\, aqueous extracts of fresh or dried flowers of yellow star thistle given orally showed significant antiulcerogenic activity in rats. \n**Directions:** \nTapo Canyon\n3802 Tapo Canyon Road\nSimi Valley\, CA 93063 \n*From the 118:* \nExit 27 Tapo Canyon Rd.\nTapo Canyon Rd. north for 1.7 miles.\nTrail head on the right\, before Lost Canyon Rd.\nParking is free in the gravel area in front of the trail head\, and along the road on both sides. \n*From CA-23:* \nCA-23 north to CA-118 east.\nCA-118 east for 8.7 miles.\nExit 27 Tapo Canyon Rd.\nTapo Canyon Rd. north (left) for 1.7 miles.\nTrail head on the right.\nParking is free in the gravel area in front of the trail head\, and along the road on both sides. \n**Hike** \nDistance: 5.4 miles\nGain: 1050′\nDistribution: Reasonably well distributed.\nDifficulty: [Easy Intermediate](https://www.meetup.com/Hiking-Plus/messages/boards/thread/50879781)\nShape: Lollipop\, clockwise.\nPace: 2.0 mph.\nTrail Type: Fire road and double track. Areas of sand\, gravel\, and rock\, some of it rugged.\nTrail Variations:\nSeveral extended inclines of 1000 steps.\nSeveral steep sections of 300 steps\, but no hands required.\nDuration: 3.5 hours\nDogs: Yes.\nRestrooms: No\nDrinking Fountains: No.\nParking: Free in the gravel area in front of the trail head\, and along the road on both sides. \n**What to bring:**\n1 liter of water for every 3 miles.\n[Snacks and/or beverages to share](https://www.meetup.com/Hiking-Plus/messages/boards/thread/50879772)\nHiking shoes preferred\, but athletic shoes will be OK.\nFlashlight or headlamp. \n**Hosting** \n*Route:* The host knows the route.\n*Navigation:* Host memory\, enhanced by GPS navigation as needed.\nHike type: Social. \n*Stops:*\nThe host may designate stopping points to let others catch up. This hike will include an extended stop for a snack and beverage share at the half way point\, which we will pass\, and then return to after seeing the tar pits. \n*Group separation:*\nSometimes hikers wish to move significantly ahead and not wait at designated stopping points. They are on their own regarding route and navigation. \n[Frequently Asked Questions](https://www.meetup.com/Hiking-Plus/pages/23772638/Frequently_Asked_Questions) \n**[Disclaimer / Release of Liability](https://www.meetup.com/Hiking-Plus/pages/29622459/Is_Hiking_Dangerous/)**

SUMMARY:Mount Gleason Trail!
DESCRIPTION:Check out this trail on AllTrails.\nhttps://www.alltrails.com/trail/us/california/mount-gleason-trail \nWe are gonna try this one again….\nOkay all you backpackers and peak baggers this one’s for you. Hiking a little known trail called Mount Gleason. This is a loooong one (18 miles) But the elevation gain is only 3152 which makes this an excellent conditioning hike. We will be following the Alltrails map from the start of our hike to the top of Mount Gleason which is more of a fireroad. From there it looks like we may pass close to the old Nike Missile site.
