SUMMARY:Hunt for California Poppies and Trail Exploration ~ Gentler Friendly
DESCRIPTION:A few years ago\, Weekday Trailblazer members helped build a trail that extends north from the Westlake Village YMCA up into the hills west of Lindero Canyon Road. We will hike both the Bowfield Trail and Wishbone Trail on this outing. \nThis route is about 5 miles with an elevation gain of about 1050’. \nI pre-hiked the route on Saturday and the poppies were abundant. There are a couple of short sections of the trail that are a bit overgrown so you might think about wearing long pants if you are sensitive to overgrowth. \nDIRECTIONS: Find the trailhead by exiting 101 at Lindero Canyon\, and go north to Thousand Oaks Boulevard. Turn left\, and immediately turn slightly right\, and uphill\, to the new park high above the Boulevard. At the top\, turn left\, and drive to the far left (west) end of the ball fields. \nThere are restrooms and water fountains near the trailhead and the ball fields. We’ll adjourn afterwards to the eateries at the Northeast corner of Lindero Canyon and Thousand Oaks Blvd. \nDISCLAIMER / RELEASE OF LIABILITY\n(IMPORTANT\, PLEASE READ BELOW IN ITS ENTIRETY): \nThe hike host is a volunteer and not responsible for the group. Safety should be a priority for everyone in the group. Please treat this meet-up as hiking with a group of friends. If you become fatigued and unable to continue the hike\, it is expected you will advise the hike host of this and return to our starting point on your own. If you are able to proceed\, it is expected that you will maintain line of sight with other members of the group at all times and help to promote the group’s safety and fitness goals. \nOutdoor sports and other events we plan can be inherently dangerous and accidents may happen. By participating in any posted event\, you are taking responsibility for your own safety and well-being. The Weekday Trailblazers Meetup Group and its organizers are not trained leaders and we do not confirm the qualifications of any of its members to lead or participate in trips. All participants take full responsibility for their own actions. \nIf you choose to sign up for this or any Weekday Trailblazers Meetup event\, you are releasing the Weekday Trailblazers Meetup Group and its organizers from all liability in case of possible injuries. Your personal safety depends on your own judgment and experience. \n** Anyone 18 yrs. or younger must be accompanied by a parent or legal guardian. \n*** No “Plus-Ones” on this hike or dogs on this hike.

The picnic table at Angel Vista offers magnificent panoramic viewpoints of the Santa Monica Mountains in a coastal area including the Boney Mountains\, Sandstone Peak and the rocky crown of Santa Monicas with Conejo Valley\, the Oxnard Plains and (on a clear day\, although it has been foggy lately) a couple of the Channel Islands. \nThis hike is 5 miles with an elevation gain/loss of about 900‘. \nDirections: From the 101 Freeway take Ventu Park Rd. south\, turn right on Lynn Rd. and left on Regal Oak. \nPLEASE READ BELOW IN ITS ENTIRETY \nPlease review the guidelines (link to the guidelines) to join our hikes.\nRestrictions apply for your safety and ours: \n\nNo dogs\nDon’t show up unless you’re shown on the “Attending” list.\nAll participants must be 18 or older\, or accompanied by a parent or legal guardian. SUMMARY:Chumash - Intermediate\, with Easy option
DESCRIPTION:4 miles\, 1100′ gain\, Intermediate\nEasy Option: 1.5 miles\, 400′ gain\, Fit Beginner \nThe entire hike outbound is a steady incline. Nothing super steep\, just continuous and quite strenuous for many. There are virtually no junctions where one can get lost. \nThis is one of the more famous hikes in Simi Valley\, and for good reason. Much of the hike takes place along the edge of the mountain. The trail in spots is a bit rugged and rocky\, so a good tread on your shoes is recommended. \nIt is a part of the Chumash Natural Park that includes sandstone rock formations\, caves\, and beautiful vistas of Simi Valley. The land is owned by the Santa Monica Mountains Conservancy and the Rancho Simi Recreation & Park District. It is maintained by the Rancho Simi Trailblazers and patrolled by the Volunteer Trail Safety Service. \nWe’ll all begin the climb together. Those doing the easier option will stop after 0.7 miles and wait for about 45 minutes until the rest of us return to this spot for our social event. While waiting\, they can continue to climb any portion they want and return to this spot\, or just take in the views. \nThe rest will continue for 1.3 miles until a flat rock before heading back the same way to the social event spot. A few will probably continue another 1/2 mile until the end of the trail. \nAt the social event spot\, we’ll be rewarded with sweeping views of Simi Valley and will share snacks and beverages. \nThere is really no way to get lost on this hike\, so everybody will move along at whatever pace they want. \nHike (click this link for a pic)\nDistance: 4.0 miles or 1.5 miles\nGain: 1100′ or 400′\nDistribution: Most of the incline is concentrated in the first half.\nDifficulty: Intermediate or Fit Beginer\nShape: Out and back.\nPace: approx. 2.0 mph.\nTrail Type: Fire road\, double track\, single track.\nTrail Variations: The entire first half is incline. Some of the trail is rugged sandstone. Some of the trail is covered in large gravel.\nDuration: 3.5 hours\nDogs: Yes.\nRestrooms: No\nDrinking Fountains: No.\nParking: Free along street. \nWhat to bring: 1 liter of water for every 3 miles.\nHiking shoes/boots. Not required\, but recommended.\nFlashlight or headlamp.\nSunscreen and/or hat as needed.\nSnacks and/or beverages to share \nHosting\nRoute: The host knows the route. A pic of the route has been posted as part of this description.\nNavigation: Host memory\, enhanced by GPS navigation as needed.\nHike type: Social. \nInteresting Notes\nHere are a couple plants you are sure to see on this hike: \nCalifornia Encelia\nAka\, California Bush Sunflower\, California Brittlebush\, Coast Sunflower\, El Dorado. \nCenter is brown. When the center is yellow\, it is Brittlebush\, from the brittleness of the stems. This is from the daisy family\, and it is typically used as an ornamental plant. \nMediterranean Mustard / Black Mustard\nMediterranean mustard seeds are yellow or white\, while Black mustard seeds are brown or black. The flowers look the same. \nFlowers\, leaves (mustard greens)\, and roots are edible. Can be used as a spice. Grind seeds and mix with water and vinegar to make prepared mustard. This is often a very abundant noxious weed (has been designated by an agricultural authority as one that is injurious to agricultural or horticultural crops\, natural habitats or ecosystems\, or humans or livestock.). It grows everywhere along the sides of the trail\, often having to be cut back during trail maintenance. \nDirections\nChumash Trail\n3200 Flanagan Dr.\nSimi Valley\, CA 93063\nCoordinates of trailhead: 34.293497\, -118.671176 \nFrom CA-118\nI-118\, exit Yosemite.\nNorth on Yosemite for 1.3 miles.\nRight (east) on Flanagan Dr. for 08. miles.\nContinue until the street ends and park. \nFAQ\nHiking Plus Page Links\nDisclaimer / Release of Liability

SUMMARY:Trail Restoration at the 2023 Santa Monica Mtns Trail Days\, April 21-23
DESCRIPTION:With all the rain we’ve had this winter\, the trails in Pt. Mugu State Park (Sycamore Canyon) have a lot of ruts to fill and brush to cut back. \nHow does free camping at the Danielson Ranch in Point Mugu State Park\, a barbecue dinner\, coffee & bagels in the mornings and the chance to win one of a few dozen thank-you drawing prizes – in exchange for some much needed work on our trails sound? \nYou can come and help for the weekend or for a day! For the 40th year\, trail users are gathering in April to work on the trails we love. In partnership with State Parks and the National Park Service\, we have trail crew leaders from the Santa Monica Mountains Trails Council\, the Sierra Club Task Force and Concerned Off-Road Bicyclist Association to teach you the basics of trail work and then guide you as we work on several different trails in the park. Choices for the level of work you want to do range from easy to very difficult. We welcome all ages and this is a great opportunity for families and outdoor groups. When the weekend is over\, your trails are in better shape and we all benefit. \nWork days are Saturday and Sunday morning with optional camping on Friday and Saturday nights. SUMMARY:The Pentachaeta Loop
DESCRIPTION:This one is another HWD original! I put this one together back in 2009 after exploring some Westlake Village use trails. With the combination of use trails\, some minor rock scrambling and views of two local lakes\, the result is probably the best hike in Westlake Village. \nThe Pentachaeta Trail\, the main feature of Triunfo Creek Park\, is named after the Pentachaeta lyonii\, a federally-listed endangered flower found in the park. The yellow\, daisy-like flower is found only in Southern California\, and blooms between April and June. \nWe will join each end of the Pentachaeta Trail with the ridgeline that divides Triunfo and Lobo Canyons to make a 5.5-mile loop. Along the way we will have views of the Las Virgenes Reservoir and Westlake Reservoir. We may do some peakbagging too! There is a total ascent of about 1\,400 ft with 700′ of it in the first 1.5 miles\, some of it rocky. A trekking pole (for a couple of downhill sections) and sturdy hiking boots recommended. \nHike is rated DIFFICULT due to terrain. See the HWD Hike Rating Guide \nDirections:\nFrom the 101 Freeway exit Lindero Canyon Rd and turn south. At the end of Lindero\, turn left onto Triunfo Canyon Rd. Park on street. Trailhead is on the right\, across from entrance to Oak Forest Mobile Home Park. \nImportant \nTrail statistics are approximate. For safety purposes always assume they are underestimated. But don’t be disappointed if they are overestimated. \nBring more water and snacks than you think you’ll need. Trail descriptions are based on previous hikes. Current conditions are unknown until arrival. Expect the unexpected and plan accordingly. \nThe Organizers and members of Hiking With Dean are not professional leaders\, guides\, or mountaineers. SUMMARY:Tapo Canyon Trail to Rocky Peak Trail
DESCRIPTION:https://www.alltrails.com/trail/us/california/tapo-canyon-trail-to-rocky-peak-trail \nHello Fellow Hikers\, \nThis trail is AWESOME it has everything. (except rock scrambling or off trails) You will get amazing views with inclines to your stretches of level off sections. All the trails separate would be rated moderate but put together you have a harder rated trail. Anyone is welcome to do any part of the sections then turn back. But please note we are continuing on. We will be meeting at Rocky Peak Trail then carpooling to Tapo Canyon Trail to start our hike. Both myself and John (my husband) will carpool people over to Tapo Canyon Trail or you can park at the Tapo Canyon trail. This will be a good heart rate up and pumping workout but not a killer hike more of a great feeling you did it… 😊 Meeting spot is Rocky Peak Trail https://www.alltrails.com/trail/us/california/rocky-peak-summit-trail Please let me know if you don’t mind shuttling or have your own traspertation incase there is a waitlist so I can add more people 😉 \nMiles 14.7\nRated hard\nElevation Gain 3021 ft\nTrail point to point\nDogs are allowed but must be trained for longer harder hikes\nParking side road and small dirt lot \nAs of now there is no sweeper for this hike so please know if you feel you can not finish for any reason please turn back early. \nPlease check back on hike info as rain\, heat advisory\, strong winds or low attendance may cause the hike to be rescheduled \nWe will always follow Jim’s Golden Rules: \n\nHike your own hike\nPlease stop at every junction and split to wait for others to catch up\n\nPlease remember to bring all essentials you’ll need for a hike (water\,hat\,sunglasses\,hiking boot/hiking shoes poles if needed snacks) \nLiability Disclaimer:\nAnd last….The Organizer\, Co Organizer\, Assistant Organizers and Event hosts in this group are not professional guides. The function of the Organizer is only to organize the trip. Each person who signs up for an Event is responsible for his or her own safety and the safety of his or her guest. Remember this is your hike. All responsibilities are of your own once you attend. Please be aware of your limit. During outdoor activity you can encounter bodily injury\, snake bites\, sunburn\, overheating\, etc. This is not within our control and we ask that you are prepared for any of the above once you sign up for an Event. If you need to take several breaks (not counting quick breather breaks) and stops throughout a hike\, the hike maybe too much for your ability. Please check each event for miles\, elevation gain\, and difficulty rating. The higher the elevation gain means more incline and less leveled off sections. We offer all levels of hikes from moderate to hard to advanced only. We encourage everyone to not give up work on your core by joining our easier moderate Events and then joining our harder hikes once you are ready. 😊

SUMMARY:Hike with Beach Party and Fire
DESCRIPTION:Hold this date. This description will be updated. \nNote: GPS has taken people to the incorrect location. Please read the written directions to verify. \n2.7 miles\, 650′ gain\, Easy-Intermediate. \nA hike\, then a potluck party on the beach with a fire.\nCome for the hike\, the beach party\, or both! \nPlease post in the comments if you will bring a fire wood bundle as your pot luck item. \nFirewood:\nDylan\, \nThe Hike. 2 – 3:30p.\nThis hike is on the easy end of the intermediate spectrum. Beginners are welcome\, but if it gets too hard\, they can always turn around and go back the way we came. Nearly all of the elevation gain is in the first half. \nThis is a social hike. The event host will be moving slowly and stopping at various points to let people catch up. Those that wish to move ahead at a faster pace\, are welcome to do so if they know the route\, but are on their own regarding navigation. \nWe meet at the Sycamore Canyon Trail head inside of Sycamore Canyon Campground at Point Mugu State Park. This is a counter-clockwise loop hike because of the shape of the route. \nFrom the trailhead\, we head up a mostly flat trail for about a 1/2 mile. Left onto the Overlook Trail\, climbing 400′ over the next mile. It ends\, and we turn left. We follow the ridge for about 1/2 mile\, with about 200′ of loss and 100′ of gain. \nFor return\, we follow our tracks back to the scenic trail\, turn right\, and follow it down for about 3/4 mile\, again reaching Big Sycamore Canyon Trail\, and turning right back to our starting point. \nThe Beach Party. 4:00 – 9:00p.\nWe’ll go back to our cars and gather up our things for the beach party. From the trail head\, it’s about 1/4 mile to the camp ground parking lot\, then another 1/4 mile to the beach party area across the road at Sycamore Cove Beach. There are picnic tables and fire pits\, but we must supply our own wood to burn. There is usually wood for sale at the camp ground across the street. \nIf your pot luck item requires utensils\, please bring them. \nThe fire pits on the beach are first come\, first serve. We have members that have volunteered to arrive early in the morning to secure a fire pit. \nPlease bring something warm to put on. It can get cool and windy near the beach\, especially as the sun drops. A chair and blanket recommended. \nSunset: 7:28p. \nPrior beach events:\n7/30/2022\n10/2021\n9/2019\n6/2018\n4/2018 \nHike\nDistance: 2.7 miles\nGain: 650\nDistribution: All the incline is in the first half.\nDifficulty: Beginner end of intermediate spectrum.\nShape: Counter-Clockwise upside-down lollipop\nPace: approx. 2.0 mph.\nTrail Type: Fire road\, double track\, and single track.\nDuration: 1.5 hours (hike)\, 4 hours (beach party)\nDogs: No.\nRestrooms: Yes\nDrinking Fountains: Yes. \nParking\nPrices from 10/30/2021: Campground lot\, $14\, gates close at 10p. SUMMARY:Hawk Canyon lollipop - Pot Luck hike
DESCRIPTION:4.2 miles\, 700′ gain\, easy-intermediate.\nEasier option: 2.7 miles\, 500′ gain\, fit beginner. \nThis is a pot-luck hike. We’ll be stopping at the 3/4 point by a picnic table\, so please bring food and drink to share\, and any utensils your items might require. \nWe have had occasions where there were no utensils\, so it might be wise to at least bring your own. \nWe start at Conejo Canyons Trail Head\, 2010 Conejo Center Dr\, Thousand Oaks\, CA 91320. \nWe’ll hike downhill from the trailhead for 0.6 miles. \nFor the regular route\, we’ll turn left and continue uphill for 0.6 miles on the Western Plateau trail and follow the fire road around to the right at the top\, then mostly flat for about a mile\, then dropping for another 1/2 mile. \nAt the bottom and when coming to a junction\, turn right onto Hawk Canyon. Our picnic spot is 1/4 mile up Hawk Canyon at the table under the trees. \nFor the easier option\, instead of turning left at the first junction\, we’ll turn right. After 0.6 miles\, the picnic area will be on the left. \nAfter the potluck\, we’ll continue up Hawk Canyon in our clockwise loop for 0.6 mile where the trail ends back at the Western Plateau trail. Take a left up the hill back to Conejo Center Dr. For those that came on the easier option\, it’s a return the way you came. \n** If you plan on leaving before the group\, please familiarize yourself with the planned route\, which can be accessed by clicking on the below link: \nThe Hike\nDistance: 4.2 miles / 2.7 miles\nGain: 700′ / 500′\nDistribution: Well distributed.\nDifficulty: Easy Intermediate / Fit Beginner\nShape: Lollipop.\nPace: 2.0 mph.\nTrail Type: Fire road and single track.\nTrail Variations: Rolling stroll and ramp.\nDuration: 3.5 hours\nDogs: Yes.\nRestrooms: No\nDrinking Fountains: No.\nParking: Free along street. \nWhat to bring \n1 liter of water for every 3 miles.\nSnacks and/or beverages to share\nHiking shoes preferred\, but athletic shoes will be OK.\nFlashlight or headlamp.\nSunscreen and/or hat as needed.\nInsect repellent (optional). \nHosting \nRoute: The host knows the route. SUMMARY:Earlier Intermediate 8-9 miles Ray Miller Trail and Overlook Trail in Malibu
DESCRIPTION:How about an earlier option on the same trail? Come out in the cool early morning for the same hike. They will see us coming back. \nJoin us on an out and back hike up the Ray Miller Trail and the Overlook Trail. We’ll turn back around the Guadalasca Trail intersection. Poppies were plentiful on the Overlook trail a couple of week ago. We’ll enjoy beautiful ocean views as we descend. We’ll pick up about 1500’ gain on this 8-9 mile adventure. \nLying along the brilliant blue Pacific Ocean at the west end of Malibu (just shy of Port Hueneme)\, the swelling blue ocean is rivaled in beauty by the undulating native California grasslands. On a clear day\, the Channel Islands are easily within sight. \nMost of the trail is exposed\, so sunscreen is highly recommended. It may be mosquito season so it’s up to you whether you should bring bug repellent. \nWe’ll meet in the parking lot near the Ray Miller Trailhead (look for the brilliant yellow sign). There is a parking fee in the lot (or free with state parking pass). There is free parking on PCH just a short walk to the parking area. \nhttps://a248.e.akamai.net/secure.meetupstatic.com/photos/event/6/7/4/a/event_93326442.jpeg \nPlease review the ongoing guidelines to participate in our morning hikes. SUMMARY:Intermediate 8-9 miles Ray Miller Trail and Overlook Trail in Malibu
DESCRIPTION:Join us on an out and back hike up the Ray Miller Trail and the Overlook Trail. SUMMARY:Stage Coach - Andora Trailhead - Easy Intermediate
DESCRIPTION:3.5 miles\, 800′ gain\, easy intermediate\nNote that we start from the Andora trailhead. \nThis hike will include an extended stay at the top\, where we’ll have a snack share social event for 30-60 minutes. \nNearly the entire trail is an incline. Fit beginners can complete this hike\, but it will certainly get their blood pumping. \nThere are no super steep sections\, but much of the trail is rugged\, much like a stair climb. This is not a conditioning hike\, it’s a social hike. We’ll be stopping at various points to let people catch up and to make sure they make any turns. \nThe hike covers a portion of an old stagecoach road that linked LA with San Francisco in the 1860s. You can see holes that\, according to others\, were drilled into the rock for chains to help the stagecoaches up the steeper sections\, during which passengers had to get out of the vehicle. \nWe will begin near the intersection of Andora and Valley Circle. We’ll proceed up a rocky trail past a plaque erected in 1939 to commemorate the old stagecoach route\, then we’ll proceed to the top of the pass for a great view overlooking the valley. There\, we’ll have a social event lasting 30-90 minutes\, sharing snacks and beverages. \nThere are a variety of ways of getting to the same place and there are many different ways of returning. Please follow the host to take the chosen route. The return route may be slightly different than the way up through a parallel path. \nThe Hike\nDistance: 3.5 miles\nGain: 800′\nDistribution: Most of the incline is in the first half.\nDifficulty: Easy Intermediate.\nShape: Out and Back.\nPace: approx. 2.0 mph.\nTrail Type: Fire road\, double track\, single track.\nTrail Variations: Some parts of the trail is very rugged over large stones.\nDuration: 3.5 hours\nDogs: Yes.\nRestrooms: Yes.\nDrinking Fountains: No.\nParking: Park in the street. \nWhat to bring:\n1 liter of water for every 3 miles.\nHiking shoes/boots. Not required\, but recommended.\nFlashlight or headlamp.\nSunscreen and/or hat as needed. \nHosting\nRoute: The host has plotted this route but never taken it.\nNavigation: GPS navigation as needed. Several of our members are familiar with the route from this trailhead. \nHike type: Social.\nWe won’t be hiking at a fast pace because this is a social hike\, not a conditioning hike. There is nothing wrong with stopping\, even if it means every 50 steps. \nStops:\nThe host may designate stopping points to let others catch up. This hike will include a stop for a snack and beverage share at the half way point. We’ll stop at junctions to make sure everybody makes any turns or chooses the correct direction at splits\, else something will be used to mark the direction\, usually a marking made of baking soda\, or some sticks on the trail forming an arrow. There may not always be a sweeper designated to be the last hiker. \nEach hiker is responsible for knowing their capability\, only attending events where they are able to sustain the described pace\, for keeping up with the group sufficiently enough to make the turns and not get left behind\, and for making sure the host is notified if they are going to split from the group. \nGroup separation:\nSometimes hikers wish to move significantly ahead and not wait at designated stopping points. Please let the host know. They are on their own regarding route and navigation. \nDirections\nStage Coach Trail\, Andora trailhead\n9861 Andora Ave.\nChatsworth\, CA 91311\n34.249626\, -118.619625 \nFrom CA-118\nTopanga Canyon (CA-27) south\, 1.4 mi\nRight (west) on Devonshire St for .4 mi\nLeft (southwest) on Valley Circle for .6 mi\nRight (west) on Lassen for 43 ft.\nLeft (southwest) on Andora for 157 ft. \nFAQ\nHiking Plus Page Links\nDisclaimer / Release of Liability

SUMMARY:Adventurous Book Club; expand your mind and social circle.
DESCRIPTION:In honor of International Women’s Day\, we are choosing a book not only written by a woman\, but that tells the story of multiple other women as they endeavor to reach base camp at Mt. Everest. \nSilvia Vasquez-Lavado \n“The Mother of the World\,” as it’s known in Nepal\, allows few to reach her summit\, but Silvia didn’t go alone. She gathered a group of young female survivors and led them to base camp alongside her. It was never easy. At times hair-raising\, nerve-racking\, and always challenging\, Silvia remembers the acute anxiety of leading a group of novice climbers to Everest’s base\, all the while coping with her own nerves of summiting. But\, there were also moments of peace\, joy\, and healing with the strength of her fellow survivors and community propelling her forward. \nIn the Shadow of the Mountain is a remarkable story of heroism\, one which awakens in all of us a lust for adventure\, an appetite for risk\, and faith in our own resilience. \nPlease read or listen to this book and join us for a discussion.

SUMMARY:Rancho Sierra Vista to Ranch Overlook - Gentler Friendly
DESCRIPTION:We haven’t done this hike in about 2 years and there are still a lot of wildflowers blooming in this big loop around Rancho Sierra Vista\, so hopefully we will enjoy some of them\, along with some pretty views of Boney Mountain. \nWe will meet at the trailhead parking area at the intersection of Wendy and Portrero Road. Please note this is different than the Parking Lot where we often meet. See directions below. \nThis will be a big loop throughout the upper mesa. We will take a brief break about 2/3 of the way through the hike at the only place where there is any shade and a few tables. It will be a little warmer than it has been on Thursday\, so bring plenty of water\, wide hat\, sturdy shoes or boots and hiking poles if you favor them. \nTotal distance is roughly 6 miles\, with about 1000′ of elevation gain. \nNote that this is a gentler hike but not a beginner hike. It is a convoluted trail so I will mark it\, but we will try to keep the group together. \nDirections: \nTake Highway 101 to Thousand Oaks. Exit at Wendy Drive. Go south (towards the ocean) on Wendy all the way until it dead ends at the Santa Monica Mountains National Recreation Area. There is ample free parking on the dirt along the road. No restrooms. \nLunch Afterwards: Three Amigos on Reino Road in Newbury Park \nDISCLAIMER / RELEASE OF LIABILITY \nIMPORTANT\, PLEASE READ BELOW IN ITS ENTIRETY: \nThe hike host is a volunteer and not responsible for the group. SUMMARY:Rancho Sierra Vista\, Peace\, Love\, and Joy ~ Gentler Hike for Thursday
DESCRIPTION:This is a gentler hike for Thursday\, we will start in the parking lot at Rancho Sierra Vista and head up through grasslands and chaparral from the Rancho Sierra Vista trailhead\, then climb up Boney Mountain Trail for some fantastic views north to Port Hueneme and Oxnard and west toward the Pacific Ocean. We may see Santa Cruz Island as well as the Los Padres Mountain range if it’s not foggy. If it’s really clear\, we’ll catch a glimpse of Mount Baldy in the distance to our east. This is a gentler hike and we will take some breaks to let slower hikers catch up and turn around just before going up to the monument.\nThe hike will start in SMNMRA and pass into Point Mugu State Park. It’s mostly single track and fire road. On this trail\, dogs are not invited. Please bring ample hydration.\nThis out and back hike is about 6 miles with 1200 feet of elevation gain. \nNote: We will meet at the Rancho Sierra Vista paved parking lot. SUMMARY:Happy Camp - Suitable for beginners
DESCRIPTION:Beginner\, 5 miles\, 500′ gain \nThis hike is entirely fire-road and is almost completely flat. Some of this trail is sandy\, so walking it at times can be more difficult. There are a lot of different interesting plants on this hike. \nFrom the trail head\, we walk along the fire road next to the golf course for 1.3 miles until making a left at a junction. \nPlease be advised that from that point on\, there is a no dogs allowed sign. At some point as we continue\, the ground will become very sandy. \nThe landscape will change from dry to green\, eventually coming to a spot where sometimes you can hear the water running along the left down in a canyon. We’ll stop there to share some snacks\, beverages\, and have a social event for 30-60 minutes\, before turning around to head back the way we came. \nInteresting Notes: \nYou will see several plants of note\, and if you are interested\, you can look them up before the hike. I’ll mention several\, and then fully describe a couple more: \nRussian Thistle\, Black Walnut\, Caterpillar Phacelia\, White Sage\, Yucca\, Bladder Pod. \nJimson Weed\nThe plant got its name from Jamestown\, because in 1676\, Jamestown\, VA soldiers ate this plant in their salad and became psychotic for 11 days. \nThe leaves and seeds are used to make medicine. Despite serious safety concerns\, jimson weed is used to treat asthma\, cough\, flu (influenza)\, swine flu\, and nerve diseases. Some people use it as a recreational drug to cause hallucinations and a heightened sense of well-being (euphoria). All parts of Datura plants contain dangerous levels of the tropane alkaloids atropine\, hyoscyamine\, and scopolamine\, which are classified as deliriants\, or anticholinergics. \nThe risk of fatal overdose is high among uninformed users\, and many hospitalizations occur amongst recreational users who ingest the plant for its psychoactive effects. As much as a 5:1 variation can be found between plants. It contains chemicals such as atropine\, hyoscyamine\, and scopolamine. \nThese chemicals interfere with one of the chemical messengers (acetylcholine) in the brain and nerves. Ingesting only a few small seeds can result in serious poisoning and may be life-threatening. Ingesting even small amounts of the plant or seeds can result in confusion\, frightening hallucinations\, the inability to urinate or sweat\, overheating\, and a rapid heart rate. \nDepending on the amount ingested\, these troubling symptoms can last hours to many days\, and in some cases can lead to death. Touching he plant can cause dermatitis. \nCastor Bean\nOne of the most poisonous plants in the world. \nThe seeds contain ricin and are poisonous to people\, animals and insects. Ricin is one of the most poisonous naturally occurring substances known. Perhaps just one milligram of ricin can kill an adult. Walter White made a poison cigarette by putting in ricin\, in the series Breaking Bad. \nThe symptoms of human poisoning begin within a few hours of ingestion. If death has not occurred in 3-5 days\, the victim usually recovers. The seed causes skin irritation at the contact point. It is said that just one seed can kill a child. \nIn 1978\, ricin was used to assassinate Georgi Markov in 1978\, a Bulgarian journalist who spoke out against the Bulgarian government. He was stabbed with the point of an umbrella while waiting at a bus stop near Waterloo Station in London. They found a perforated metallic pellet embedded in his leg that had presumably contained the ricin toxin. \nCastor beans are pressed to extract castor oil which is used for medicinal purposes. Ricin does not partition into the oil because it is water-soluble\, therefore\, castor oil does not contain ricin\, provided that no cross-contamination occurred during its production. \nUsed in bone marrow transplants\, cancer therapies\, AIDS treatment\, and can selectively destroy neurons by injecting ricin into nerves. \nDirections: \nHappy Camp\n15100 Happy Camp Canyon Rd.\nMoorpark\, CA 93021\n34.311460\,-118.866110\nNear the northeast corner of the clubhouse lot. \nFrom the 118 and from the 101:\nHead to towards the intersection of I-118 and CA-23.\nExit 19A Princeton Ave.\, turn right (north) if coming from the east\, left coming from CA-23.\nPrinceton Ave. north for 0.2 miles.\nLeft on Campus Park Dr. for 0.4 miles and continue on Happy Camp Canyon Rd. for 0.7 miles.\nFollow signs to Rustic Canyon golf course.\nPark on the right in gravel lot\, just before golf course paved lot. Do not park in the paved golf course lot\, it has a gate that closes at sunset. \nThe Hike\nDistance: 5 miles\, 3 1/2 hours\nElevation Gain: 500′\nDifficulty: Fit Beginner\nPace: 2.0 mph\nDogs: No. A sign half-way says no dogs. I’m not the dog enforcer\, so bring a dog at your own risk.\nRestrooms/Drinking Fountains: Yes\, inside the golf course clubhouse at the start\, but likely closed after dark.\nParking: Free in the gravel lot next to the paved golf course lot.\nTrail: Fire Road and some with powdered sand. \nWhat to Bring:\n1-2 liters of water.\nSnacks and/or beverages to share\nHiking shoes preferred\, but athletic shoes will be OK. SUMMARY:Kick off to the BKS with a retrun to Slide Moutain - this time with flowers!
DESCRIPTION:This is Part one of the new BKS (Butt Kicking Series) of hikes! *(Hikes with close to 3000′ Gain and or 10 or more miles.) \n*** Safety Note: Rain or Extreme Heat at trailhead cancels hikes. \nReturn to Slide to Slide Mountain Fire Lookout Tower (4\,631′)\, overlooking Pyramid Lake not just for the challenge but for the flowers! \nDistance: ~ 12 miles total\, RT – Out and back style – with a touch of “Are we done yet?” \nGain: ~2400′ \nHiking Time: 5.5 hours \nRATING: Strenuous (mainly for the overall Longer Distance and the 1340′ Gain over 2 mile section). Definitely not one for Beginners! You need to be hiking regularly to enjoy this one. \nDescription: Our day starts and ends with a ~ 1.5 mile flat hike (3 of the 12 mile total) along the now abandoned Route 99 (Golden State Highway)\, the predecessor to the 5 Hwy. We follow Piru Creek\, a Native California Fishery and Wild and Scenic River\, until we reach the actual trailhead (a white gate on the left) . From the trailhead\, we catch our first glimpse of the lookout tower\, 2400′ above. \nNext comes a 1340′ “butt kicker”\, as we start from the trailhead up the steepest part of the hike (for ~ 2 miles with some service road switchbacks ). We eventually reach the saddle and can pause to enjoy a panoramic view across the Piru creek area and the Sespe Wilderness to the West\, And marvel at the Angular Angular unconformitys to the west. \nAfter catching our breath\, it’s another ~ 2 miles and 1060′ to the peak via winding through some massive Conglomerate Rocks and a a series of shallow switchbacks on the East side of the mountain\, and more on the West side\, gradually approaching the peak. Eventually the tower comes into view and after rounding a bend\, we break out at the summit and an incredible view of Pyramid Lake below. \nBring something to eat because we will have snacky time at the tower and by the time you get there you will be ready for some food for your face as you enjoy the 360 degree view. From here\, if it is clear\, we can see just about every major peak around the Northern LA area\, even Mt Baldy! \nMeet your leader:\nAt 7:45AM in front of the white gate near Frenchman’s Flat Campground\n( 34.616492\, -118.743782 ); we head up the old highway at 8:00AM sharp. \nDirections from SCV:\nGo north on the I-5\, past Castaic and exit at Templin Hwy\, Exit # 183. Turn left at the bottom of the ramp\, go under the freeway to a T junction\, then turn right. Follow this bumpy 2 lane road (Old Hwy 99) for 5 miles until it ends at a white forest service gate where there is parking (this is Frenchman’s Flat Camping area). Display your Adventure Pass in your windshield. There are bathrooms at this trailhead. \nBring:\nA snack/lunch\, water (3 liters is recommended)\, including 1L electrolytes if it is a hot day\, sunscreen\, hat\, hiking poles if you have them. \n!!! Wear layered clothing and pack a windbreaker as it may turn windy / cold at the top. Check weather forecast. Good boots with tread are a given. \nAdventure Pass: YES. Required for parking in the Angeles National Forest. 1/car for those who drive. These can be obtained at any BIG 5 Sporting Goods store; $5 for a day pass\, $30 for a year pass. \nBathrooms: Pit Toilets at the trail head and at the visitor center up on top of the mountain. \nDogs: OK \, if on leash and well behaved. Please keep the distance\, lack of shade\, and your dog’s stamina in mind. \nLeader(s): Paul H and Gary S

SUMMARY:Hike to the Hollywood Sign/Bronson Caves - Mt. Lee Summit
DESCRIPTION:I’m very excited to plan another hike up to the Hollywood Sign and the Bronson Caves. \nThis will take us to the summit of Mt. Lee where we will get the best views of the Hollywood Sign. The total mileage for our journey will be approximately 7 miles. Our elevation change should be about 1\,200 ft. \nWe will meet at the end of Canyon Drive which is where we will park. There will be parking options right at the address listed\, on the left\, and also right before that lot on a dirt patch. \nWe will be on Canyon Drive to start on up the canyon. Once we hit Mulholland Trail we will head left and this will take us to views of the front of the Hollywood Sign. After this we’ll go a short ways up the spiral road up to the summit of Mt. Lee. Once we’ve reach the top\, we’ll head back down to where we started. Once we get to the end\, we’ll go on a slight detour to the Bronson Caves. This is the Batcave from Batman. How cool is that?! \nBring lots of water\, sunscreen\, snacks/food\, jacket\, and anything else you think you’ll need. \nHere is the address (this will take you to the parking lot): 2974 Canyon Drive\, Los Angeles\, CA 90068 \nDogs are allowed on this hike. \nThere is a bathroom in the parking lot. \nPlease ask any questions you may have.
