SUMMARY:Las Llajas - Suitable for beginners
DESCRIPTION:5 miles\, 500′ gain\, Beginner \nThis hike is a great trail for beginners because all the elevation gain is distributed. It is a walk down a rolling fire road through a really cool canyon\, and you will find no difficult or extended elevation climbs. \nThis is one of my favorite trails for people new to hiking. It is an “out-and-back” hike\, where we return the way we came\, so there is virtually no chance of getting lost. You may be amazed that such a place exists right here in Simi Valley. \nFrom the trail head\, we’ll walk down an asphalt path for several hundred steps and turn right onto a gravel fire road. After that\, there will be no more turns. We may take a detour up a trail off to the right to see the first bee sanctuary\, then return back to the fire road. \nWe’ll continue on the fire-road for about 1 mile. We’ll stop there (in the shade if summer) to allow others to catch up. \nThen we’ll take a 200′ detour to the left to see another bee sanctuary\, which continues in a half circle back to the fire road. Even though I haven’t seen any actual bees there in a while\, it’s still interesting to see. \nWe’ll continue for another 1.5 miles and wait there for anybody that needs to catch up\, and share snacks and/or beverages. \nThere is a lot of wild life along this trail because it is the only area with water for quite a distance. \nThis is a social hike\, not a conditioning hike. Still\, for those that aren’t interested in the beverage and/or snack share and want more of a workout\, just continue on for another mile\, then turn around and come back. That’s about how long we’ll be before packing up and heading back the way we came. \nInteresting Notes:\nTree Tobacco (Nicotiana glauca)\nElongated yellow flowers. The Cahuilla Indians used the leaves interchangeably with other tobacco species in hunting rituals and as a poultice to treat swellings\, bruises\, cuts\, wounds\, boils\, sores\, inflamed throat\, and swollen glands. \nIt does not contain nicotine. It contains anabasine\, a similar compound\, which is highly toxic to humans and animals. It is more toxic than nicotine. Ingestion of the leaves can be fatal. It is being investigated for use as a biofuel. All parts of this plant are toxic. \nUsed as an insecticide. Do not smoke it. \nThe Hike\nDistance: 5 miles\nGain: 500′\nDistribution: Well distributed.\nDifficulty: Beginner\nShape: Out and Back.\nPace: 2.0 mph.\nTrail Type: Fire road.\nTrail Variations: Rolling stroll.\nDuration: 3.5 hours\nDogs: Yes.\nRestrooms: No\nDrinking Fountains: No.\nParking: Free along street. \nWhat to bring:\n1 liter of water for every 3 miles.\nSnacks and/or beverages to share\nHiking shoes preferred\, but athletic shoes will be OK.\nFlashlight or headlamp.\nSunscreen and/or hat as needed. \nHosting \nRoute and Navigation: Host memory\, enhanced by GPS navigation as needed. \nHike type: Social.\nWe won’t be hiking at a fast pace because this is a social hike\, not a conditioning hike. There is nothing wrong with stopping\, even if it means every 50 steps. \nStops:\nThe host may designate stopping points to let others catch up. This hike will include an extended stop for a snack and beverage share at the half way point. This hike does not have any junctions or turns once past the initial path down to the fire road. There may not always be a sweeper designated to be the last hiker. \nSince this hike is out-and-back on a wide fire road with no turns after the first 500′\, one cannot get lost. Therefore\, for this hike\, it will be acceptable to split from the group moving faster\, slower\, or otherwise at your own pace. \nGroup separation:\nSometimes hikers wish to move significantly ahead and not wait at designated stopping points. SUMMARY:Wilderness Access Day - Bommer Canyon
DESCRIPTION:We will be playing it by ear a bit\, but we will be doing a hike that will be around 5 miles with 800-900 ft. of elevation gain. \n**You do not need to register on LetsGoOutside.org. \nEnjoy self-guided access in the southern portion of Irvine’s Open Space Preserve. The entire southern Open Space Preserve trail network will be open for self-guided hiking and biking from 8 am to 2 pm. This includes the single-tracks in Shady Canyon and Bommer Canyon that are reserved for guided activities only. Registration is not required for this event\, though it is shown on the website. If you need driving directions\, please use the online registration to receive a map and instructions for getting to Bommer. The Bommer Canyon Cattle Camp will be available for parking\, but please take note that your vehicle must be removed from the Cattle Camp area by 2 pm. \nSpecial Notice: Parking at the Bommer Canyon Cattle Camp is extremely limited due to ongoing construction and will be available on a first come-first serve basis. Additional parking may be available at the Bommer Canyon Trailhead and Turtle Rock Community Park. Alternate parking options also include the Quail Hill Trailhead\, Quail Hill Community Center and Laguna Coast Wilderness Park. \nPlease note that you are asked to adhere to the following measures during the activity in order to participate: \n\n\nArrive with all necessary equipment to keep you safe on the trail\, including water\, proper attire\, and footwear\, first aid\, medications\, etc. \n\n\nRestrooms will be available\, but facilities will not be sanitized for each individual. \n\n\nDogs are not permitted in the Irvine Open Space Preserve. \n\n\nAges 17 and under must be accompanied by a parent or guardian. \n\n\nAll mountain bicyclists must wear a helmet at all times while on Irvine Open Space trails. \n\n\nMotorized recreation vehicles of any class or type are not permitted for use in the Nature Preserve. \n\n\nYou may choose to enter the trail system from other surrounding locations\, Quail Hill\, Laguna Coast\, El Moro\, but you must be off of the Irvine “scheduled program only” trails by 2 pm. \n\n\nGates will be closed and you will be subject to citation if you are found to be on the Irvine “scheduled program only” trails before 8 am or after 2 pm. \n\n\nFailure to remove your vehicle from the Cattle Camp by 2 pm will subject you to citation. \n\n\nThe availability for self-guided trail access is limited to the date and hours of this event only. \n\n\nParking\, updated maps and information will be available at the Cattle Camp in Bommer Canyon during open hours.

DESCRIPTION:**** Rain falling at the Trailhead can cancel hike **** \n=================================================\n*** Yes the road is open all the way to Mt Wilson ***\n**Highway 2 is closed beyond Red Box**\nDISTANCE: ~ 7 miles total (REVERSE loop style hike) \nHIKING TIME: ~ 4 hours \nLOSS/ GAIN: ~ 1500′ loss/ 1500’gain \nRATING: Moderate + (Not for beginners. This is a reverse hike with most of the gain in the second half of the hike in a 1.5 mile section) \nDESCRIPTION: We will hike down from the Eaton Saddle Trailhead located on Mt Wilson Red Box road / Red Box Road on the old Mt Lowe Rd\, passing through a cool tunnel\, and good views of the San Gabriels\, maybe stopping by the old Alpine Tavern and eventually arriving at Inspiration Point. Here we can take a break/ snack and check out all the interesting viewing tubes.\nThen comes the fun part! We head back up the trail to join the Mt Lowe West trial\, a beautiful rocky single track. After a mile and a half…. and ~1200′ ! … we will summit Mt Lowe 5\,600′ to grab some more great views. After the peak\, it is a gentle downhill ~2 miles back on the East side of the mountain to the Mt Lowe Road and back to the trailhead. \nLeader’s Note: There are no bathrooms at the trailhead. There are some in the Red Box parking lot when you turn off Hwy 2 and on to Mt Wilson/ Red Box Road. \nCarpooling from Santa Clarita Valley: \nDIRECTIONS to Trailhead ( 34.23949\, -118.09337 ) from Santa Clarita (~41 miles). \nFrom Santa Clarita\, take the I-5 South to the 210 East. Exit the 210 at Hwy 2 Angeles Crest Hwy\, North\, into the mountains/ forest. Take Hwy 2 for ~14 miles\, all the way to Red Box Road junction that leads to Mt Wilson. Turn Right\, at a parking lot (you will immediately see the Native American Indian Cultural Center\, Haramonkngna on your right).\nContinue driving on the Mt Wilson/ Red Box Road ~ 2.3 miles. There will be a turn out on the right AND a parking lot on the left side.\nPark anywhere there is space. To be sure you are in the correct location\, look for a locked forest gate on the right\, with the number 2N50 on it. This is the Mt Lowe Campground Trail / Eaton Saddle trail head. \nMEET:\nAt the Eaton Saddle Trailhead ( 34.23949\, -118.09337 ) at 8:15AM to start down the trail by 8:30AM latest. \nBRING: Water (2 – 3 liters recommended)\, electrolytes if it is a hot day\, sunscreen\, hat\, lunch/ snacks\, good boots with tread\, and hiking poles (recommended) which can be helpful on the climb. Will be doing both the Woodridge Loop and the Sunset Hills Loop Trail. Both of these Trails are more on the easier moderate side but combining in a loop will give us more of a workout and a moderate hike. Your welcome to come out and just do a partial trail with us but please note we will be continuing our hike without turning back. Right now is a great time to hit this area as it is still green and the wildflowers are still in full bloom. Not a lot of shade so if the weather suddenly heats up we will change the start time (earlier) so keep your eyes out. DESCRIPTION:Come join us for this fun Father’s Day Hike! Bring your family. 🙂 \nThe hike I am planning is around 6.3 miles with about 700 ft. of elevation gain. It starts at the very end of the paved road\, the long gray strip that can be seen on the map. \nWe will begin at the Bell Canyon Trail head. We will continue onto that and then take it to the Cougar Pass trail. We will go up that and make a left on Oso Trail. Once that ends\, we will come back down Bell Canyon Trail until we hit Star Ridge Trail. We will take this to West Ridge Trail and go left. This will take us to a single track trail\, Dick Loskorn Trail. This hits Nature Loops Trail and this will take us back to the beginning. \nThis is a beautiful hike with expansive views. DESCRIPTION:The Nicholas Flats Trail in Leo Carrillo State park is unique in the way it connects the mountains with the sea. Chaparral\, grassland\, coastal scrub and oak woodland all converge near the flat with spectacular ocean views along the way. An old cattle pond backed by picturesque sandstone outcroppings provides a home for red-wing blackbirds and a welcoming resting place for us. \nTrails used: Willow Creek Trail\, Nicholas Flat trail\, Meadows Trail\, Camp 13 Trail\, Nicholas Ridge Trail\, Malibu Springs Trail\, Nicholas Ranch Road \nPost Hike lunch at Spruzzo’s\n29575 Pacific Coast Hwy\nMalibu\, CA 90265 \nHike is about 9 miles with 1800′ total ascent and rated MEDIUM+. SUMMARY:Red Rock Canyon Potluck Hike
DESCRIPTION:Easy-Intermediate\, 4 miles\, 800′ gain.\nOption not to hike:\nIf for some reason you don’t want to hike but still want to come\, the social event can be driven to\, and the main group of hikers should get there about an hour after we begin: 23601 W Red Rock Rd\, Topanga\, CA 90290. It costs $5 to park there\, MasterCard/Visa accepted. \nWe’ll be passing through a beautiful canyon with huge red\, pale purple\, and tan sandstone walls. \nThe hike begins with a steady climb on a fire road for 0.75 mile. We turn right at the junction and begin heading mostly down another fire road for about 1.25 miles. \nThere will be a picnic area on the right\, where we’ll enjoy a potluck picnic. If your item requires utensils/plates/toothpicks\, etc.\, please bring them. \nThe picnic area is wooded and shaded. SUMMARY:Saddle Peak and Topanga Lookout Trails ~ Gentler Intermediate
DESCRIPTION:We will have two short hikes; Saddle Peak hike (about 3 miles with approximately 500′ elevation gain) and Topanga Lookout hike (about 2 miles with approximately 400′ elevation gain).\nhttps://www.hikespeak.com/trails/topanga-lookout/ \nWe will begin Saddle Peak hike at the end of the Stunt Road hike near the intersection of Stunt Road and Schueren Road. Saddle Peak offers beautiful\, panoramic views of the Malibu Mountains with striking views of the Pacific\, Calabasas Peak\, Stunt Ranch State Park\, and Old Topanga Canyon. There will be a little rock-scambling close to the top. We will take a short break at Saddle Peak and return to the beginning point. Then\, we will proceed to Topanga Lookout hike. \nWe will head up the paved Topanga Tower Motorway which crosses a junction\, (Fossil Ridge Trail/Backbone Trail)\, and continue up the paved road toward the radio towers atop the summit. When a wide dirt trail veers off to the left\, follow this track along the ridge uphill and down to the lookout. The large\, graffiti-covered concrete foundation at the site of the old fire tower offers amazing views of the surrounding mountains and landscape\, wide and far. \nThese hikes comprise about 5 miles with 900 – 1000’ elevation gain. \nDirections: \nFrom the 101 – exit at the Las Virgenes Road exit and go south (toward the ocean). Drive 3 miles to Mulholland Highway and make a left turn. Continue 4 miles to Stunt Road and turn right. Go just past the 1.94 mile marker at the entrance to the UCLA Stunt Ranch Reserve\, park and meet in the asphalt pullout on the right. \nFrom PCH – turn inland on Las Flores Road (across from Duke’s Restaurant). Drive 3.4 miles up this narrow twisting canyon and turn right onto Rambla Pacifico Street. After 0.6 miles\, make a sharp right onto Schueren Road\, and take that for 1.8 miles to the intersection with Stunt Road and Saddle Peak Road. SUMMARY:Intermediate Hike ~ Palo Comado / Cheseboro Loop via Ranch Center trail
DESCRIPTION:This week we’ll do a loop around the northeastern regions of the Santa Monica Mountains National Recreation Area and the Las Virgenes Open Space. This area traverses many ecosystems\, including riparian\, chaparral\, and the rockscape from Galaxy Quest. SUMMARY:Upper Stunt High Trail To Saddle Peak ~ Gentler Intermediate at a Slower Pace
DESCRIPTION:This hike begins at Upper Stunt High Trail\, a couple hundred feet to the right on the other side of the street from the parking lot. The trail winds upward gradually over switchbacks\, giving way as the trail heads up to a dramatic rocky overlook with striking views of the Pacific\, Stunt Ranch State Park\, Calabasas Peak\, and Old Topanga Canyon. There are also longer vistas northwest into Ventura County and east to the San Fernando Valley. We will see beautiful wooded areas and increasing views of the Santa Monica Mountains and Stunt Ranch State Park as we ascend. We eventually reach the Saddle Peak Trail via Backbone Trail and soon begin an easterly ridgeline walk high above the Pacific. This route will take us along and above spectacular tilted and pocketed sandstone formations\, with dramatic views of the mountains and ocean as we proceed. There will be a little rock-scambling close to the top. SUMMARY:Sage Ranch Lollipop - Fit Beginner
DESCRIPTION:3 miles. 560′ gain\, fit beginner (5:30\, not 6p)\nNote the time change. This park closes at sunset\, so we try to get out by then. \nFree parking is limited. Carpooling recommended. \nAs of Agust. 2022\, the first part of the clockwise loop was closed\, but we found a new route with a perfect place for a snack-share\, complete with picnic table. \nWe’ll head up the ramp and begin the hike counter-clockwise. This ramp will be the only significant incline\, but is still suitable for fit beginners. It is paved\, runs 1/4 mile\, and about 125′ of gain. \nAs we continue\, there will be a trail junction heading to the right and behind the rocks. For this hike\, we may or may not go up on the rocks to a secret area where the rock has been carved out. Maybe some will and the rest won’t. \nWe’ll continue on the main trail and follow it the rest of the way around. When we come to a sign that says “detour” because the path forward is closed\, we’ll take the detour. \nShortly after the detour starts\, there will be a picnic table to the right. We’ll stop there for a social event. Please bring snacks and drink to share. \nThis time of year\, there can be insects. Long pants and your preferred bug spray are recommended. This area is known for rattlesnakes\, especially as evening approaches\, so keep a look out. \nIt is a steady climb up most of the way back\, but fit beginners can handle it. It will eventually lead us back to the top parking lot. From there\, we’ll take the asphalt path and down to our cars. \nThis takes us through Sage Ranch Park\, with interesting rock formations all around\, a very cool overlook onto the valley at the half way point\, and even an overlook onto part of the old Santa Suzanna nuclear test facility. \nAbout the parking\nThere are two spots to park. The first (where we will meet)\, is right at the entrance along the west edge of Black Canyon Rd. This is a free gravel lot\, but parking is limited to about 30 cars. \nIf the free lots gets filled\, continue about 500′ west up a steep incline\, where there is another lot with payment required via self-pay envelopes. If you plan on parking in this lot\, bring exact change from $5-15\, as I’m not sure of the cost. \nFirst\, we’ll walk up to the upper lot. You can start up there if you don’t want to make the climb from the lower lot. \nThe park is officially open from sunrise to sunset. If you do park in the pay lot\, be sure you return before sunset\, else risk a ticket or being locked in by a ranger. \nInteresting Notes \nBlack Sage\nMultiple brown buttons going up the top of the stalk\, that may have white flowers. Green leaves. Purple or white flowers that are dark brown as they dry on the plant. Squish the leaves and smell. \nA rare and sought after Black sage honey is also made from the honey of bees that pollinate the Black sage plant. Black sage is utilized in the culinary world as an aromatic and flavorful herb. It can be used in recipes wherever traditional sage is called for\, however keep in mind that foraged Black sage has a much stronger flavor than that of traditional store bought sage. \nIts flavor marries well with winter squashes\, brown butter\, poultry\, venison\, pears\, cheese\, potatoes and other herbs such as rosemary and thyme. Use fresh in a variety of different preparations or leaves can be dried and stored for future use as a dried herb. Black sage was used traditionally by Native Americans known as the Chumash people to form an herbal soak for the bath to be used in the treatment of bodily pain\, specifically for the feet and lower legs. \nYerba Santa\nSaint Herb\, Holy Plant\, Mountain Balm. \nThe Spanish who came to early California were so impressed with the plant that they gave it the name Yerba Santa. \nLeaves were chewed to relieve dry mouth. Leaves were smoked or chewed to relieve asthma\, coughs\, colds\, headaches\, and stomachaches. Infusions of Yerba Santa leaves and flowers were used to treat fevers\, coughs\, colds\, stomachaches\, asthma\, rheumatism pleurisy\, chronic bronchitis\, tuberculosis\, and to purify the blood. Heated leaves were placed on the forehead to relieve headaches and other aches and sores. \nThe sticky leaves stay in place upon the skin. Mashed leaves were applied externally to sores\, cuts\, wounds\, insect bites\, and aching muscles. Mashed leaves were also used to reduce the swelling and relieve pain caused by bone fractures. The branches and leaves were burned in steam baths to treat rheumatism and hemorrhoids. Restrictions apply for your safety and ours: \n\nPlease don’t show up unless you’re on the “Attending” list\nUnregistered or waitlisted will be turned away\nSorry\, no “Plus Ones” on this hike\nNo dogs allowed in the state park\n\nThe usual access to MASH (Reagan Ranch) is still too overgrown to make for a comfortable hike. This alternate route will take us into the park from the north–Mulholland entrance to the Grassland Trail. The Grassland trail runs along a ridge line that affords panoramic views of MCSP’s central valley (aka Torpin Plain) before dropping down to Crags Road (aka High Road) that will take us up and over to Century Lake. From there we will proceed across the newly installed bridge to the MASH site. We will return the same way we came in with some small detours if time allows. Total distance is approximately 6.5 miles\, with minimal elevation gain/loss (according to Gaia GPS) of about 500′. \nOur departure time is 9:00 a.m. There is plenty of parking on Mulholland but you may have to go past the trailhead to find it. Just be aware of the “No Stopping” signs and park well within the white-stripes. There are pullouts up on the left where you can do a u-turn and park on the opposite side of the road. Please be careful! Walk facing traffic and watch for speeding cars. This is known as the “Mulholland Raceway”. \nDirections:\nTake the 101 Freeway to Las Virgenes Rd. exit. SUMMARY:Ray Miller trail up to the fire road
DESCRIPTION:On this hike we will go up the Ray Miller trail to the fire road and back\, about 6 miles. It will probably still be cool enough on the beach to start at 9:00\, that will change soon. We’ll enjoy beautiful ocean views as we descend. \nLying along the brilliant blue Pacific Ocean at the west end of Malibu (just shy of Port Hueneme)\, the swelling blue ocean is rivaled in beauty by the undulating native California grasslands. On a clear day\, the Channel Islands are easily within sight\, although it is often foggy this time of year. \nMost of the trail is exposed\, bring sunscreen\, hopefully there will be some clouds. It may be mosquito season so it’s up to you whether you should bring bug repellent. \nWe’ll meet in the parking lot near the Ray Miller Trailhead (look for the brilliant yellow sign). There is a parking fee in the lot (or free with state parking pass). SUMMARY:Arroyo Seco Walk-in Trail Camp Adventure June 22-25 Limited to 12 guests
DESCRIPTION:This is a walk-in trail campground. Amenities are few. There is a rest room\, a 4 fire pits\, a SINGLE bear vault and 4 picnic tables/benches. You cannot make reservations\, so getting there early is imperative. Pack lightly. You will be walking downhill for approximately 1 mile to the camping area. There are no numbered sites\, but there are 4 sites to choose from. This is an active bear site\, so you need to put all of your food and things with a smell such as creams/lotions/toothpaste\, etc . in the bear vault. There is ONLY ONE BEAR VAULT for all 12 people\, plus anyone else who might be camping there. If you have bear canisters\, you can use those\, you can hang food and other items in trees. If you have a bear-proof YETI cooler\, you can use that as well. \nThings to bring: small tent\, bedding\, water\, small first aid kit\, dehydrated foods\, snacks\, flash light\, extra battery\, medications\, bug spray\, toilet paper (rest room may not always be serviced)\, bug net\, water\, water filter\, hiking poles\, any other necessities. \nOPTIONAL: wood\, matches\, starter IF you can carry it down the trail to the campground \nDirections: From Santa Clarita\, go South on the I-5 freeway to the 210 freeway East. Exit Hwy 2/Angeles Forest Hwy. Proceed past most of the houses. Look for the turn out in photos. \nFind this area to the left of the parking area. Walk down this road and duck under or around the locked steel pipe forest gate. Walk down this road for 1 mile to the camp site. \nClothes to bring: Hiking clothes/boots/socks/hat\, shorts/water shoes/bathing suit/towel\, pajamas\, water shoes for hikes in water crossings \nActivities: We will be camped beside the Arroyo Seco River. This river is famous for the trapped Steelhead trout that used to live in the Pacific Ocean\, and migrated upstream to the Arroyo Seco to breed. Now\, there are trapped Steelhead in the river. There is a shelf in the river where the fish hide. Dianne will bring snorkels and masks so you can look under the shelf and see the Steelhead\, some up to 4’ across. This is where you will use your bathing suit and towel.\nDianne will be leading a hike to Brown Mountain Dam and above on Friday\, and you will be looking at the Steelhead in the river on Friday as well. Paul will be joining us on Saturday\, joining us from the JPL Trail. \nDogs are welcome if you maintain them on-leash\, control their nighttime barking\, and clean up after them. (Bring doggie bags) Swimming in the river is another activity you can enjoy while in or near camp. \nNO FISHING IS ALLOWED!!! It is nearby and may cause you to drive past the trailhead if navigating by GPS. \nRoute\nFrom the trailhead parking lot\, up for 0.7 mile on Long Canyon Trail to a bench. For those doing the easy option\, wait here about 40 minutes. They can spend that time going out and back in the area\, if they like. \nFor the regular route\, we continue with a 2 mile loop\, 400′ of gain:\nWe turn right\, go up 300 feet\, then down Sunrise Trail 4/5 of a mile.\nLeft at the junction for 300 feet.\nLeft at the split for 200 feet up a relatively steep incline.\nLeft on Autumn Ridge\, which is a fire road.\nContinue on this extended incline for about almost a mile\, arriving at the five-points intersection.\nTake an “easy” left\, not a hard left\, for about 500′ back to the bench where those that did the easy route will be waiting. \nWe’ll have a snack share social event for 30-60 minutes before turning right and heading back down to the trail head parking lot. \nInteresting Notes \nTurkey Mullein\nSmashed leaves can be thrown into the water to stupify fish\, causing them to float to the surface\, a practice illegal in most states. The seeds are not toxic to birds and are enjoyed especially by doves and wild turkeys. \nAncient Greeks rolled and dried the leaves\, then used them as wicks for oil lamps. It stalks were used as torches burned at funerals. Many tribes employed the use of mullein leaf tea for coughs\, colds\, and rheumatism. They considered it to be analgesic\, anti-inflammatory\, antispasmodic\, and expectorant. The astringent and demulcent properties of the leaf tea were found useful in cases of diarrhea. \nWild Oats\nThe mature seed of the plant is used as a cereal grain. All oats have edible seeds\, although they are small and hard to harvest in most species. Oats are hard to tell apart from weedy relatives\, so the term “sowing wild oats” came to be used to describe unprofitable activities and destructive sexual liaisons of an unmarried young male that could result in children being born out of wedlock. \nHike \nDistance: 3 miles\, easy option 1.4 miles.\nGain: 800\, easy option 450.\nDistribution: Most of the incline is in the first 15 minutes of the hike\, followed by an extended incline at the halfway point.\nDifficulty: Easy Intermediate.\nShape: Lollipop\, counter-clockwise.\nPace: 2.0 mph.\nTrail Type: Fire road\, single and double track. This is close to an 8 -miles out-and-back trail near La Canada Flintridge\, California. Generally considered an easy route\, it takes an average of 3 to 4 hours to complete. This is a very popular area for hiking\, mountain biking\, walking and even horseback riding so watch your step! \nWe will be starting at the JPL Riparian Zone Parking locations to make our way up the Arroyo Seco to the Paul Little Picnic area where the Brown Mountain Dam is located. Buckel up kids because this is a hike\, you’re going to get your feet wet on\, so dress accordingly. We will also stop by Gould Campground and check in with Dianna. She will have some snorkel gear for anyone that would like to see if they can catch a view of some Steel head Trout in the Arroyo. \nBRING: Shoes you do not mind getting wet for the water crossings\, as well as a dry pair to put on for the trip home. DESCRIPTION:Fit Beginner – 6 miles\, 600′ gain (route link)\nEasy Option – 2 miles\, 300′ gain (route link) \nThis is a social hike and an out-and-back event. \nThere is a potluck at the M.A.S.H. site before we turn around for the return. If your item requires paper plates\, utensils\, etc. please bring them. \nPot Luck guidelines link \nWe will meet at the Grasslands trail head off of Mulholland Hwy and take the Grasslands Trail with a gentle climb and connect to the High Road (~3/4 miles). We’ll take a right and follow the High Road another 3/4 miles then take a right at Crag Road up a short 1/3 mile climb (170′ gain). At the top of the hill\, we’ll take a left turn down the short bypass trail to Century Lake. \nFrom Century Lake\, the trail is level all the way to the M.A.S.H. site. From the lake we’ll continue on Crag Road and at a 1/2 mile we’ll cross over Malibu Creek. The bridge over the creek is washed out\, so we’ll have cross over some fallen branches and rocks just beyond the bridge (I’m not sure of the water level or conditions of the creek\, so there is a chance you may get wet). Another 3/4 miles on Crag Road we’ll reach our destination and have our potluck. \nEasy Option: 2 miles\, 300′ gain.\n1912 Paiute Dr.\, Agoura Hills\, CA 91301. This is where you will see on the map that the Live Oak Trail hits the paved road\, right off of the parking lot marked P. This is the parking lot closest to the Edna Spaulding Trail. (There should also be someone at the gate when you come in that can direct you where to go.) \nWe start by going up Live Oak Trail and up Vista Trail. We will take back Hoffman Homestead Trail\, Coyote Trail\, and back to Live Oak. We might get our feet wet on one of them. \nHike is appx 7 miles with 1500 ft total ascent and is rated MEDIUM. SUMMARY:Santa Rosa Trail Loop through Box Canyon - Gentler Intermediate
DESCRIPTION:Wildwood Park is one of the most versatile local parks there is\, with 27 miles of trails skittering through rocky cliffs\, cacti-filled desert environs\, volcanic rock\, riparian forest\, and a cool\, watery canyon. Wildwood’s archetypal western look served as the set for The Rifleman\, Gunsmoke\, and Wagon Train back in the day\, as well as the movie Spartacus. You’ll be rewarded with beautiful vistas of the Conejo Valley\, Santa Rosa Valley and some interesting properties including the train-collector yard. \nWe’ll start on the Mesa trail and proceed to the Box Canyon. Then\, descend down through Box Canyon onto the paved Rocky High Road\, the train yard and up the Shooting Star trail to the Santa Rosa trail. We will enjoy the views of Mount Clef Ridge on both sides and head back to our cars. \nIt is about 6 1/2 miles and approximately 1000+’ of elevation gain. \nDirections: \nFrom the 101 in Thousand Oaks\, turn north on Lynn Road and continue 2.6 miles to Avenida De Los Arboles\, then turn left. Continue for about a mile to the end and turn into the Wildwood parking lot on the left. \nFrom the 118\, travel west to the 23\, exit at Avenida De Los Arboles and turn right. Drive further than you remember having to drive to this trailhead (10 or 15 minutes). SUMMARY:Los Robles Trail with option to Angel Vista ~ Intermediate Hike
DESCRIPTION:Space Mountain is the name for Los Robles Trail West\, starting at Moorpark Road in Thousand Oaks and switchbacking up the hill to the west. No one seems to know why it’s called Space Mountain\, though maybe the Disney ride inspired it. Maybe former major league pitcher Bill “Spaceman” Lee had something to do with it. Maybe it’s the final frontier. Come out and throw your equally ludicrous guess into the ring. \nWe will hike to the fireroad just after the new section…and you can opt to go up to Angel Vista for the views. If you go all the way\, you will hike just under or over 8 miles total with about 1350’ of gain. I may not make it all the way…I’m nursing a post-operative hand. If you turn around at the fireroad\, it will be shorter and less gain. Duh. If you don’t know the way\, stay with me. \nDirections: From the 101 in Thousand Oaks\, turn south on Moorpark Road. We will meet in the parking lot at the corner of Moorpark and Greenmeadow. \nPlease review our guidelines to participate in our hikes.
