SUMMARY:Talopop - Suitable for fit beginners
DESCRIPTION:Fit Beginner\, 4.1 miles\, 720′ gain. \nIs it Talepop or Talopop? Maps and signs that I have seen\, use the 2nd spelling\, but a lot of references use the other. \nThere are several portions with extended inclines that will make a beginner hiker stop for a breather. \nThere is nothing wrong with stopping\, even if it means every 50 steps. A couple of the inclines\, while not extreme\, continue for about 1000 steps\, and there are also several hills that are about 100 steps each. We won’t be hiking this trail at a fast pace because this is a social hike\, not a conditioning hike. See “How hard is this hike” in the discussion section (https://www.meetup.com/Hiking-Plus/messages/boards/thread/50879781). \nWe’ll meet in front of the facilities building at the center of the park. This is a lollipop hike. \nSome of the hike is fire road\, and a lot of the hike is single-track. Some has complete exposure to the sun\, and some is through shaded wooded areas. \nWe’ll head behind the facilities building in the center and head left down the Las Virgenes Trail. After 1/3 mile\, the trail turns 90 degrees\, we continue on the easier route for 1/10th mile instead of taking the trail that climbs the hill. After we cross the dry creek bed where a bridge used to be\, we turn right and it becomes the Talopop Trail. \nWe’ll follow it around for another 1.8 miles until it dead ends at a fire road\, Liberty Canyon Trail. There\, we’ll wait for others to catch up\, and we can share some beverages and/or snacks (https://www.meetup.com/Hiking-Plus/messages/boards/thread/50879772) before continuing. \nWe’ll turn left and after 1/3 mile\, the trail dead ends again at Las Virgenes Fire Road. We’ll turn left again and travel 1.1 miles where we’ll hit another junction\, turning right back onto Las Virgenes Trail for the final 0.4 mile return\, making a left at the split right behind the facilities building. \nInteresting Notes: \nHere are a couple plants you are sure to see on this hike: \nBlack Sage \nMultiple brown buttons going up the top of the stalk\, that may have white flowers. Green leaves. Purple or white flowers that are dark brown as they dry on the plant. Squish the leaves and smell. \nA rare and sought after Black sage honey is also made from the honey of bees that pollinate the Black sage plant. Black sage is utilized in the culinary world as an aromatic and flavorful herb. It can be used in recipes wherever traditional sage is called for\, however keep in mind that foraged Black sage has a much stronger flavor than that of traditional store bought sage. \nIts flavor goes well with winter squashes\, brown butter\, poultry\, venison\, pears\, cheese\, potatoes and other herbs such as rosemary and thyme. Use fresh in a variety of different preparations or leaves. Can be dried and stored for future use as a dried herb. Black sage was used traditionally by Native Americans known as the Chumash people to form an herbal soak for the bath to be used in the treatment of bodily pain\, specifically for the feet and lower legs. \nCalifornia Sagebrush – Artemesia Californica \nAromatic when crushed. AKA\, common sage\, coastal sage. Sunflower family. Cowboys used to ride through it and brush up against the pine-shaped leaves\, coming home with the smell on their clothes and giving rise to the nickname “Cowboy Cologne.” Not a true sage. Can be used as a cooking spice and can be made into a tea. Tear off some needles by running your hand up the stalk and smell the aroma. \nAn infusion can be made for an insect repellent. \nDirections: \nTalopopJuan Bautista de Anza Park3701 Lost Hills RoadCalabasas\, CA 91301 \nFrom the 118 \nWest to CA-23 southCA-23 south for 7.4 milesUS-101 east for 9.5 milesExit 33 Lost Hills Rd.Lost Hills Rd. south for 0.2 milesPark on the right. \nFrom the 101 \nExit 33 Lost Hills Rd.Lost Hills Rd. south for 0.2 milesPark on the right. \nThe Hike: \nDistance: 4.1 miles\, 3.5 hours\, counter-clockwiseElevation Gain: 720′Distribution: Reasonably well distributed\, some of the gain on the return portion.Shape: LollipopDifficulty: Easy-IntermediatePace: 2.0 mphDuration: 3.5 hoursDogs: NoRestrooms: Yes\, at the start.Drinking Fountains: Yes\, at the start.Parking: Free in the paved lot\, or along the street..Trail: Fire Road and single track\, good condition. \nHosting \nRoute: The host knows the route.Navigation: Host memory\, enhanced by GPS navigation as needed.Hike type: Social. \nThe description includes a picture of the route. Those that wish to return immediately instead of hanging around during the snack and beverage share\, should memorize the route so they can safely return on their own. \nStops:The host may designate stopping points to let others catch up. This hike will include an extended stop for a snack and beverage share (https://www.meetup.com/Hiking-Plus/messages/boards/thread/50879772) at the half way point. \nWe will stop at junctions to make sure everybody makes any turns or chooses the correct direction at splits\, else something will be used to mark the direction\, usually a large arrow made of baking soda or an arrow on the ground made of sticks. There may not always be a sweeper designated to be the last hiker. \nEach hiker is responsible for knowing their capability\, only attending events where they are able to sustain the described pace\, for keeping up with the group sufficiently enough to make the turns and not get left behind\, and for making sure the host is notified if they are going to split from the group. \nWhat to Bring:2 liters of water.Snacks and/or beverages to share (https://www.meetup.com/Hiking-Plus/messages/boards/thread/50879772).Hiking shoes preferred\, but athletic shoes will be OK.Flashlight or headlamp.Sunscreen and/or hat as needed. \nDisclaimer / Release of Liability:https://www.meetup.com/Hiking-Plus/pages/29622459/Is_Hiking_Dangerous/

SUMMARY:Timber Mt- via Chapman Trail (Icehouse Cyn)
DESCRIPTION:Distance: 9> \nRating: 7/10\, not for beginners \nPace: Intermediate/advanced (will be at my pace) \nThere won’t be a sweeper!! \nElevation 2620’ gain \nParking permit-adventure pass required \nRain Cancels \nAccording to historian John Robinson\, the name “Icehouse Canyon” dates from the 1860s when an ice plant in the lower canyon supplied ice to valley residents. The ice business is long gone but the name is still fitting as frigid air often blows through the canyon and can even chill the hiker on an early summer morning; in the winter it can be a deep freeze. \nTestimony to the canyon’s grandeur is the significant number of visitors it draws. On a fair-weather weekend\, expect to share the trail with swarms of hikers. Even on a weekday you probably won’t have the trail to yourself. \n \nDirections: Check your local map to plan a route to the 210 freeway traveling east from Pasadena past the 57 freeway. As you enter the town of Upland\, exit at Base Line\, turn left on Base Line and take the first right on Padua Ave. Make a right on Mt. Baldy Road into the mountains towards Baldy Village. A couple miles after Baldy Village you will enter the parking lot for Ice House Canyon. The entrance to the parking lot is just before the road hairpins to the left up to the Chairlifts. Make sure you do not keep going up to the lifts. There is a little road block right there where a wonderful lil’ lady by the name a Dee Hanson sells honey\, and “National Forest Service Adventure Pass” parking permits. You will want to grab one of these permits for $5.00. Park your car in the parking lot making sure to display your pass in the windshield. \n******************************************************************* \nPLEASE – Know your limits and abilities. Bring snacks and drink plenty of liquids when hiking. Check weather conditions and dress accordingly and be aware of your surroundings at all times. Watching out for poison oak\, snakes\, ticks\, uneven footing\, spectacular views\, beautiful fauna all while interacting with awesome (usually) fellow hikers can be extremely hazardous\, rewarding and fun. \nVHC HIKE RATING SCALE \nRating a hike is subjective\, meaning the difficulty of a hike will be in direct relation to how often you hike and the type of hike you prefer. Keep in mind that any hike can have the following: un-even hiking surfaces\, various obstructions\, water and/or water crossings or bouldering and/or rock hopping. A great hike will have all of these! \n1 – A long walk \n2 – 4 mile hike w/little elevation gain \n3 – 5 mile hike w/up to1000 ft. elevation gain \n4 – 5+ mile hike w/up to1500 ft. elevation gain (heart rate increases at times) \n5 – 7+ mile hike w/over 1500 ft. elevation gain (heart rate increasing even more at times) \n6 – 7+ mile hike w/over 2000 ft. elevation gain (at times you might be trying to remember how to perform CPR) \n7 – 5+ mile hike w/over 2000 ft. elevation gain (at times you might be muttering expletives to yourself) \n8 – 10+ mile hike w/over 3500 ft. elevation gain (at times you might be angry with the hike leader) \n9 – 10+ mile hike w/over 5000 ft. elevation gain (at times you might be thinking of reporting the hike leader to the authorities) \n10 – Use your imagination \nClass 3 Scrambling: Scrambling or un-roped climbing. You must use your hands at times to hold the terrain or find your route. This may be caused by a combination of boulders\, steepness and extreme terrain. Some Class 3 routes have ropes in place for assistance. \nDISCLAIMER / RELEASE OF LIABILITY \nIMPORTANT\, PLEASE READ BELOW IN ITS ENTIRETY: \nI am a volunteer (i.e. not liable for the group). Safety is a priority for everyone in the group. Think of this as hiking with a group of friends. \nOutdoor sports and other events we plan can be inherently dangerous and accidents may happen. It’s always fun. We’ll be biking. These are streets that you wouldn’t normally bike on due to traffic congestion and danger. This is a very casual trip as we’ll most likely be stopping for coffee and/or food along the way or anything interesting that we see and so those stops will determine when we get back. It’s a lazy Sunday afternoon on bikes. \nHere’s the official description:https://www.ciclavia.org/heart_of_la21 \nHere’s the route map:https://tinyurl.com/yetwmadd \nMake sure you bring along a spare inner tube. \nIt’s always good to bring a bike lock. \nMEETUP LOCATION:The North-West end of MacArthur Park at the intersection of West 7th Street and S. Park View street or as close to this as you can get.https://tinyurl.com/tck234w4 \nIt’s important that you get there on time as we will be leaving that location promptly at 9 am. \nMEETUP PARKING:There is street parking in the area. My general preference is to park at611 S Carondelet St. Los Angeleshttps://tinyurl.com/9ar4vpczwhich is a parking garage that charges about $9.From there you just head south on Carondelet St past Wilshire and then turn left on 7th Street. It’s a 0.3 mile ride. \nIf you have trouble finding us\, call my cell# (818-307-6460). \nMEETUP DATE AND TIME: Sunday.\, October 10th\, no later than 8:45 am. \nDISTANCE:12 miles if you do the route once.24 if you say “Hey that was fun\, let’s do it again” \nDURATION: 5+ hours \nELEVATION GAIN: 150 feet \nBIKE TRAIL DESCRIPTION: LA City Streets \nTHE PACE: 10 MPH on up \nLEVEL: Advanced Beginner on up \nMY CELL# IS 818-307-6460 \n“Learn to ride a bicycle. SUMMARY:Long Canyon - Front to Back
DESCRIPTION:4.5 miles\, 1000′ gain\, Easy Intermediate. \nThere are several extended inclines and a couple short but steep climbs. \nStarting from the Long Canyon trailhead parking lot\, we head up Long Canyon Trail to a bench. We’ll regroup and let others catch up\, then head down about 1000′ to the 5-points junction. We’ll make the first left and continue for about 700′ where we’ll come to a junction. We’ll make a right onto the fire road and follow it for 1.4 miles before reaching Long Canyon Road. \nThen right for 0.2 miles\, cross road\, enter tail turning left. We’ll follow Canyon View Trail for 1 mile to a bench at top\, where we’ll stop and have snack share social event (https://www.meetup.com/Hiking-Plus/messages/boards/thread/50879772) for 30-60 minutes. \nFinally\, we’ll continue down down back to Long Canyon Road\, and right to return to the trail head parking lot. \nA picture of the route is posted. \nInteresting Notes: \nTurkey Mullein \nSmashed leaves can be thrown into the water to stupify fish\, causing them to float to the surface\, a practice illegal in most states. The seeds are not toxic to birds and are enjoyed especially by doves and wild turkeys. \nAncient Greeks rolled and dried the leaves\, then used them as wicks for oil lamps. It stalks were used as torches burned at funerals. Many tribes employed the use of mullein leaf tea for coughs\, colds\, and rheumatism. They considered it to be analgesic\, anti-inflammatory\, antispasmodic\, and expectorant. The astringent and demulcent properties of the leaf tea were found useful in cases of diarrhea. \nWild Oats \nThe mature seed of the plant is used as a cereal grain. All oats have edible seeds\, although they are small and hard to harvest in most species. Oats are hard to tell apart from weedy relatives\, so the term “sowing wild oats” came to be used to describe unprofitable activities and destructive sexual liasons of an unmarried young male that could result in children being born out of wedlock. \nHike \nDistance: 4.5 milesGain: 1000Distribution: A couple extended inclines and a couple shorter but steeper inclines.Difficulty (https://www.meetup.com/Hiking-Plus/messages/boards/thread/50879781): Easy Intermediate.Shape: Loop\, counter-clockwise.Pace: 2.0 mph.Trail Type: Fire road\, single and double track. There is nothing wrong with stopping\, even if it means every 50 steps. \nThose that wish to return immediately instead of hanging around during the snack and beverage share\, should memorize the posted route so they can safely return on their own. \nStops:The host may designate stopping points to let others catch up. This hike will include an extended stop for a snack and beverage share (https://www.meetup.com/Hiking-Plus/messages/boards/thread/50879772) at the half way point. \nWe will stop at junctions to make sure everybody makes any turns or chooses the correct direction at splits\, else something will be used to mark the direction\, usually a large arrow made of baking soda. \nGroup separation:Sometimes hikers wish to move significantly ahead and not wait at designated stopping points. Please let the host know. They are on their own regarding route and navigation. \nDirections: \nWhere of Long Canyon Rd. and S. Wood Ranch Pkwy. intersect in Simi Valley. SUMMARY:TOM SLOAN SADDLE TRAIL LOOP
DESCRIPTION:BEFORE YOU WILL BE MOVED TO THE GOING LIST\, YOU WILL NEED TO UPDATE YOUR CDH PROFILE (The three questions must be answered with a “yes”) IF YOU HAVE NOT ALREADY DONE SO \nWe will begin our trek on a fire road then continue above the shaded Bear canyon to the Tom Sloan Saddle. After a short break continue on the newly restored TS trail and then stop for snacks at the Mount Lowe Campground. This is where the Old Tavern was built back in 1895 by professor Lowe. A few of the ruins from the Tavern and the Mt. Lowe Railway system can be seen here. There are also displays of pictures and a bit of history of its existence from 1893 to 1938.After the obligatory group photo we will return back to our cars by ascending the Mt. Lowe fire road \nA BIT OF HISTORY: RESTORATION PROJECTThe original trail was built many\, many years ago by the U.S. Forest Service. it was used as a short cut to get from the Lowe campground to Millard and the Arroyo Seco. The Mount Lowe Road was then built which destroyed most of the trail and it wasn’t well maintained. After the Station Fire in 2009 it was permanently closed. The impressive trail restoration was made possible by Restoration Legacy Crew back in 2018. It took them many months of hard work and dedication to bring this trail back to life. The perfect positioning of the rock steps along the path can be appreciated as well as many other attributes that make this trail worth checking out. \nStats:Level- Strong Intermediate/NO BEGINNERS PLEASEDistance- 8 milesGain- 1400′ (approximate)Terrain- rocky fire road\, single track trailsRestrooms- not available at trailhead (there is one at the campground)Dogs- NOT ALLOWED ON THIS HIKEParking- dirt road at the trailheadA National Forest Pass is not required. \nI would like to be back to the cars by 2:00 PM \nWHAT TO BRING: A POSITIVE ATTITUDE.Lunch/snacks\, at least 3 liters of water\, Lug soles with good tread\, poles if you like/have them.Hand sanitizer & mask (optional) \nEARLIER MEET TIME LOCATION: 7:00AMhttps://www.google.com/maps/place/Milmada+Dr\,+La+Ca%C3%B1ada+Flintridge\,+CA+91011/@34.2085854\,-118.2003645\,17z/data=!4m5!3m4!1s0x80c2e9fb97d40ee9:0xa72e02a9070ad690!8m2!3d34.208581!4d-118.1981705.From here we’ll caravan to the trailhead. \nEATON SADDLE TRAILHEAD DIRECTIONS:https://www.google.com/maps/place/Eaton+Saddle+Trailhead/@34.2393818\,-118.0955521\,648m/am=t/data=!3m2!1e3!4b1!4m5!3m4!1s0x80c2e7edecba22af:0x4ebc9e7d4338d8d8!8m2!3d34.2393774!4d-118.0933634 \nPlease join us for lunch at the La Canada-Flintridge Town CenterThere is a variety of food places to eat.https://www.google.com/maps/place/990+Town+Center+Dr\,+La+Ca%C3%B1ada+Flintridge\,+CA+91011/@34.2048424\,-118.202024\,17z/data=!3m1!5s0x80c2e9fc288954a1:0x79962bab30c04ef6!4m12!1m6!3m5!1s0x80c2e9fc28e4164b:0x9f9115b9ea5a8d58!2sBlaze+Pizza!8m2!3d34.204838!4d-118.1998485!3m4!1s0x80c2e9fc28956f11:0x7598d16cf3b6ae96!8m2!3d34.2048937!4d-118.1998907 \nMy cell: 562 331 3793 \nCDH POLICY: Any member with two NO SHOWS on CDH events since will lose their membership with CDH. SUMMARY:Coyote Park - Intermediate
DESCRIPTION:Distance: 3.5 miles\, Gain: 700′\, Intermediate. This was previously designated easy-intermediate\, but some thought it should be labeled as intermediate because of the extended inclines. \nA strong and motivated beginner can do this hike. They would be challenged and slow during a few of these climbs. That’s OK\, because this is not a conditioning hike\, it is a social hike. \nThe Route.• This is a lollipop with a counter-clockwise loop. We’ll start at Coyote Park\, across from the tennis courts on Valley Gate Rd.• After heading across the park\, we’ll find a trailhead.• We’ll head up and wind around for about 3/4 of a mile.• Then we’ll make a sharp left and head up for about 1/2 mile along a wide path that was cleared to prevent the spread of the fires.• We’ll stop at the bench atop the hill and have a social event and shack share that will last between 30 and 60 minutes (https://www.meetup.com/Hiking-Plus/messages/boards/thread/50879772).• Then we’ll follow the ridge for about 3/4 of a mile on a relatively flat section\, then another 1/4 mile down to the road. We’ll wait there for everybody to catch up.• Next\, we’ll follow the path alongside the road for about 500′ and turn left. This will be a flat section that leads for almost a mile back to the park. \nDirections: \nFrom CA-23:North\, exit Olsen Rd.Olsen Rd. east\, becoming Madera\, for 1.8 miles.Right on N. SUMMARY:Palo Comado Lollipop - Easy Intermediate
DESCRIPTION:4.6 miles\, 900′ gain\, easy-intermediate. \nThis route takes us through a beautiful canyon via a counter-clockwise lollipop. Most of the hike has a clear view of the sky\, with a few parts that have tree cover. We’ll be stopping at the half-way point for a snack and beverage share (https://www.meetup.com/Hiking-Plus/messages/boards/thread/50879772). \nWe’ll start at the Palo Comado Canyon – Doubletree Trailhead (coordinates: 34.182480\,-118.751785) and head east for 1/2 mile along the Doubletree Connector Trail. We’ll turn left and head north along the Palo Comado for about 1 mile. We’ll turn right (east) onto the Dead Cow Trail for 0.8 miles\, where we’ll come to an overlook on the left. \nThere\, we’ll stop for a snack and beverage share (https://www.meetup.com/Hiking-Plus/messages/boards/thread/50879772). Then we’ll continue down the Sheep Corral trail for about 700′\, turning left back onto the Palo Comado trail. From there\, we’ll head south 1.75 miles and turn right (west) onto the Doubletree Connector Trail and the final 1/2 mile back to the trailhead. \nHikeDistance: 4.6 milesGain: 900′Distribution: Most of the incline well distributed in the first half.Difficulty (https://www.meetup.com/Hiking-Plus/messages/boards/thread/50879781): Easy Intermediate.Shape: Lollipop\, counter-clockwise.Pace: approx. 2.0 mph.Trail Type: Fire road and single track. A pic of the route has been posted as part of this description. \nNavigation: Host memory\, enhanced by GPS navigation as needed. \nHike type: Social. We won’t be hiking at a fast pace because this is a social hike\, not a conditioning hike. There is nothing wrong with stopping\, even if it means every 50 steps. See “How hard is this hike” in the discussion section (LINK (https://www.meetup.com/Hiking-Plus/messages/boards/thread/50879781)). \nStops:The host may designate stopping points to let others catch up. This hike will include an extended stop for a snack and beverage (https://www.meetup.com/Hiking-Plus/messages/boards/thread/50879772) share at the half way point. We will stop at junctions to make sure everybody makes any turns or chooses the correct direction at splits\, else something will be used to mark the direction\, usually a large arrow made of baking soda. \nGroup separation:Sometimes hikers wish to move significantly ahead and not wait at designated stopping points. Please let the host know. They are on their own regarding route and navigation. \nInteresting Notes \nHere are a couple plants you are sure to see on this hike: \nBlack SageMultiple brown buttons going up the top of the stalk\, that may have white flowers. \nYellow Star ThistleThorny. Also called yellow cockspur and golden star thistle. Generally considered a weed. Long-term ingestion by horses causes a neurological disorder known as chewing disease\, a lethal lesion of the nigropallidal region of the brain. This disease is expressed as a twitching of the lips\, tongue flicking\, and involuntary chewing. Permanent brain damage is possible\, and affected horses may starve to death. Used in Turkish folk medicine for the treatment of ulcers. In a laboratory study\, aqueous extracts of fresh or dried flowers of yellow star thistle given orally showed significant antiulcerogenic activity in rats. \nDirections (Palo Comado Canyon – Doubletree Trailhead): \nFrom I-101:I-101\, exit Kanan Rd.Kanan Rd. north for 2 miles.Right (east) on Sunnycrest Dr. for 0.6 miles.Continue on Doubletree Rd. for 0.l miles.Trailhead on the right\, park along the street. \nFrom CA-118\, CA-23:I-118 west.I-23 south for 4.8 miles\, exit Avenida de Los Arboles.Left (east) on Avenida del Los Arboles for 1.6 miles.Right (south) on N. SUMMARY:Top Of Topanga Loop
DESCRIPTION:The hike is waitlisted. Put yourself on the list and I will add you if I feel you can complete the hike at my pace safely (Timber Mt hikers\, not at that pace 🙂 ) \nDistance: 9Elevation Gain: 2100Rating: Intermediate/Advanced 7-10 \nTrail: Fire road\, single track\, class 1\,2 rock climbs and some street crossings. \nThe HikeExcellent variety\, views and exercise along this eight mile loop hike with an elevation gain of 2\,400′. The trail climbs and follows a ridge line through interesting rock formations to one of the best observation points in the Santa Monica Mountains; The Topanga Lookout. Topanga Lookout\, the former site of a fire tower\, stands above Red Rock Canyon Park and offers fine views of the Santa Monica Mountains\, Calabasas\, and the Santa Susana Mountains. \nAfter taking in the view and enjoying a break/early lunch\, we’ll follow the trail down to the shaded valley below and return to the parking area. \nDirections \nFrom the 405/101 Freeway… Exit Mulholland Dr /Valley Circle Blvd and go south on Mulholland Dr for 0.5 mi Turn Right on Valmar St for 1.2 mi Turn Right on Mulholland Hwy for 3.8 mi Left on Stunt Rd for 1.0 mi Park at turnout on Right \n********************************The Fine Print \nPLEASE – Know your limits and abilities. \nThe Farzan Rule: Posted hike times are the time the hike starts or we leave from a posted shuttle location. I’m aware other Meetup groups offer a grace period for late arrivals; we don’t. It’s your responsibility to know the location of the meeting spot and be there and ready to participate at the posted time. If you have any concerns about the directions feel free to contact the organizer of the event\, preferably in advance of the event and not at the start time. I’m of the opinion that it’s not fair to delay an event when the majority of attendees have arrived on-time. (so named after a conversation I had with a certain un-named member) \nRSVP’s: If you RSVP for an event be responsible and update your RSVP if your plans change. If your plans change at the last second and you’re not able to update your RSVP also let us know. In my opinion a no-show is someone who has no regard for following the guidelines we request from our members and will risk being removed from future events that have a limit. By participating in any posted event\, you’re taking responsibility for your own safety and well-being. The Valencia Hiking Crew Meetup Group and its organizers are not trained leaders and we do not confirm the qualifications of any of its members to lead or participate in trips. All participants take full responsibility for their own actions. If you choose to sign up for any Valencia Hiking Crew Meetup events\, you are releasing the Valencia Hiking Crew Meetup Group and it’s organizers from all liability in case of possible injuries as stated in paragraph 6.2 of the Meetup “Terms of Service” located on the bottom of the Meetup website. Your personal safety depends on your own judgment and experience.

SUMMARY:Angel Vista Full Moon potluck hike
DESCRIPTION:Happy Full Moon! Let’s enjoy hike and potluck! \nThis hike is rated easy-intermediate because it is a continuous incline for 1.5 miles. This isn’t real steep\, but it is continuous\, and many beginner hikers have indicated this should be rated intermediate (https://www.meetup.com/Hiking-Plus/messages/boards/thread/50879781). \n \nThat said\, there is no reason a fit beginner cannot complete this hike. If needed\, just stop and rest along the way\, even if it’s every 50 steps. This is not a conditioning hike\, it is a social hike\, and you really can’t get lost. \nThe only junction is 200 yards before the top\, where we’ll turn right to complete the climb. \nAt the top\, there is a picnic table and 360 degree incredible views that are especially wonderful at night. We’ll have our typical snack-share (https://www.meetup.com/Hiking-Plus/messages/boards/thread/50879772) social event at the top for 30-60 minutes before heading back the way we came. Please bring some food and drink to share. \nThe top has been known to sometimes be very cool and windy. Please bring something to put on in case it is that way at the top. \n \nYou will see several plants of note: \nTree Tobacco \nThe Cahuilla Indians used the leaves interchangeably with other tobacco species in hunting rituals and as a poultice to treat swellings\, bruises\, cuts\, wounds\, boils\, sores\, inflamed throat\, and swollen glands. It does not contain nicotine. \nIt contains anabasine\, a similar compound\, which is highly toxic to humans and animals. It is more toxic than nicotine. Ingestion of the leaves can be fatal. It is being investigated for use as a biofuel. All parts of this plant are toxic. Used as an insecticide. Do not smoke. \n \nElderberry \nThe blue or purple berries are gathered and made into elderberry wine\, jam\, syrup\, and pies. The entire flower cluster can be dipped in batter and fried while petals can be eaten raw or made into a fragrant and tasty tea. Spit out the seeds. Elderflower water is also used in perfumes and sweets. \nMost agree that they do need to be cooked if you are going to eat more than just a few out of hand. That’s because they have a small amount of cyanide producing glycosides\, which are released upon digestion. Fully ripe black berries are not toxic and you can eat as many as you like. Boiling or baking takes care of any “toxic” issue as does drying raw berries. \n \nDirections: \nFrom the 101 take the Ventu Park exit (3 miles north/west of the 23) and go South toward the ocean. At Lynn Road turn right. VERY soon you will pass an open space on your left. Watch for the entrance to Regal Oak Ct on your left\, where you will turn left. Take it all the way to the end and park. This is a neighborhood\, so please keep the noise down. \nWe will meet not quite at the end of the road. We’ll cross a gate along the side of the street and across from the houses\, then move 100 yards to the right and enter the trail. \nHike Distance: 3.0 milesGain: 800′Distribution: Most of the incline occurs in the first half\, which is a continuous climb.Difficulty (https://www.meetup.com/Hiking-Plus/messages/boards/thread/50879781): Easy Intermediate.Shape: Out and back.Pace: approx. 2.0 mph.Trail Type: Double track\, single track.Duration: 4 hoursDogs: Yes.Restrooms: NoDrinking Fountains: No.Parking: Free along the street. \nWhat to bring:1 liter of water for every 3 miles.Hiking shoes/boots. Not required\, but recommended.Flashlight or headlamp.Sunscreen and/or hat as needed.Snacks and/or beverages to share (https://www.meetup.com/Hiking-Plus/messages/boards/thread/50879772). \nRelease of Liability: https://www.meetup.com/Hiking-Plus/pages/29622459/Is_Hiking_Dangerous/

SUMMARY:Santa Maria Canyon - Summer Hill Ranch Loop
DESCRIPTION:This short hike offers a nice variety of canyon and ocean scenery\, and is not as well traveled as some of the other trails in the eastern Santa Monica Mountains. \nWe’ll enjoy a great “lollipop” outing in the northeastern corner of Topanga State Park starting at the Viewridge Trailhead for Santa Maria Canyon. We’ll connect up with The Summer Hill Ranch Trail — a short and easy loop that curves around a low-rising hill dotted with coastal live oak trees. \n \nHighlights during this stroll through a wooded canyon include ocean views and a sturdy bridge that will take us across Santa Maria Canyon. \n \nAfter crossing the bridge we’ll take Summer Hill Ranch trail to the Canyon Overlook. Here\, either at a picnic table or atop a sandstone outcrop\, you can enjoy excellent views of Topanga Canyon’s trademark geology and of Santa Maria Creek. For the rock scramblers there are caves and crevices to explore (while us chickens watch from the picnic bench). \n \n \nHike will be about 3 miles with 550 ft total ascent. Hike is rated as EASY. See the hike rating guide at https://www.hikingwithdean.com/hike-rating-guide/ \nIt’s short\, but offers a nice variety of canyon and ocean scenery\, and is not as well traveled as some of the other trails in the eastern Santa Monica Mountains. \nDirections \nFrom Highway 101: drive south on Topanga Canyon Blvd for 3.7 miles. Turn left on Viewridge and drive 0.5 miles to the end of the road. \nFrom Pacific Coast Highway: head north on Topanga Canyon Blvd. for 9 miles and turn right on Viewridge. \nPark by end of street. There is plenty of street parking \nThe Organizers and members in this group are not professional leaders\, guides\, or mountaineers. SUMMARY:Las Llajas - Suitable for beginners
DESCRIPTION:5 miles\, 700′ gain\, Beginner. \nThis hike is a great trail for beginners because all the elevation gain is distributed. It is a walk down a rolling fire road through a really cool canyon\, and you will find no difficult or extended elevation climbs. \nThis is one of my favorite trails for people new to hiking. It is an “out-and-back” hike\, where we return the way we came\, so there is virtually no chance of getting lost. You may be amazed that such a place exists right here in Simi Valley. \nFrom the trail head\, we’ll walk down an asphalt path for several hundred steps and turn right onto a gravel fire road. After that\, there will be no more turns. But shortly\, we’ll take a detour up a trail off to the right to see the first bee sactuary. it was filled with live bees last time I looked in May 2017. Then we’ll return back to the fire road. \nWe’ll continue on the fire-road for about 1 mile. We’ll stop there (in the shade if summer) to allow others to catch up. \nThen we’ll take a 200′ detour to the left to see the second bee sanctuary\, which continues in a half circle back to the fire road. Even though I haven’t seen any actual bees there\, it’s still interesting to see. \nWe’ll continue for another 1.5 miles and wait there for anybody that needs to catch up\, and share snacks and/or beverages (https://www.meetup.com/Hiking-Plus/messages/boards/thread/50879772). \nThere is a lot of wild life along this trail because it is the only area with water for quite a distance. \nThis is a social hike\, not a conditioning hike. See link How Hard is This Hike (https://www.meetup.com/Hiking-Plus/messages/boards/thread/50879781). Still\, for those that aren’t interested in the beverage and/or snack share and want more of a workout\, just continue on for another mile (15-20 minutes) at a fast pace\, then turn around and come back. That’s about how long we’ll be before packing up and heading back the way we came. \nInteresting Notes: \nTree Tobacco (Nicotiana glauca) \nElongated yellow flowers. The Cahuilla Indians used the leaves interchangeably with other tobacco species in hunting rituals and as a poultice to treat swellings\, bruises\, cuts\, wounds\, boils\, sores\, inflamed throat\, and swollen glands. \nIt does not contain nicotine. It contains anabasine\, a similar compound\, which is highly toxic to humans and animals. It is more toxic than nicotine. Ingestion of the leaves can be fatal. It is being investigated for use as a biofuel. All parts of this plant are toxic. \nUsed as an insecticide. Do not smoke it. \nThe Hike: \nDistance: 5 milesGain: 700′Distribution: Well distributed.Difficulty: Beginner.Shape: Out and Back.Pace: 2.0 mph.Trail Type: Fire road.Trail Variations: Rolling stroll.Duration: 3.5 hoursDogs: Yes.Restrooms: NoDrinking Fountains: No.Parking: Free along street. \nWhat to bring: \n1 liter of water for every 3 miles.Snacks and/or beverages to share (https://www.meetup.com/Hiking-Plus/messages/boards/thread/50879772).Hiking shoes preferred\, but athletic shoes will be OK.Flashlight or headlamp.Sunscreen and/or hat as needed. \nHosting \nRoute: The host knows the route. A pic of the route has been posted as part of this description.Navigation: Host memory\, enhanced by GPS navigation as needed. This hike does not have any junctions once past the first 500′. \nSince this hike is out-and-back on a wide fire road with no turns after the first 500′\, one cannot get lost. Therefore\, for this hike\, it will be acceptable to split from the group moving faster\, slower\, or otherwise at your own pace. \nGroup separation:Sometimes hikers wish to move significantly ahead and not wait at designated stopping points. Please let the host know. They are on their own regarding route and navigation. \nDirections: \nLas Llajas Canyon Trail5715 Evening Sky DrSimi Valley\, CA 93063 \nFrom the west: 23-N to 118-E\, Exit 29 Yosemite. From the east: 118-W\, Exit 29 Yosemite.Head north on Yosemite for 1.25 miles. SUMMARY:STORMING THE CASTLE via the CAVE OF MUNITS and then a frontal assault
DESCRIPTION:BEFORE YOU WILL BE MOVED TO THE GOING LIST\, YOU WILL NEED TO UPDATE YOUR CDH PROFILE (The three questions must be answered with a “yes”) IF YOU HAVE NOT ALREADY DONE SO.NEED HELP:go to: https://wp.me/P9MbG4-hC \nCASTLE PEAKJoin me on a task to storm the castle (Castle Peak) via two attempts in El Escorpion Park. The first assault will be a maneuver on its west flank via a cavern passage (Cave of Munits). This will require some class 3 rock climbing (using your hands to assist) as you can see from the photo above of (http://www.meetup.com/calabasasdayhikers/photos/1871301/31389991/) one of our past attempts. When this attempt fails\, we’ll regroup below and go for a frontal attack on the castle itself. One of the obstacles on this course will be a hive of bees in the castles ramparts. By way of a traverse maneuver we’ll overcome this and overtake Castle Peak. Having conquered the castle\, we’ll break to enjoy the views our conquest has to offer. \nAccording to Chumash oral tradition\, this cave was the home of a very powerful shaman who met his demise after murdering the son of a tribal chief. \nMEETUP TIME: No later than 9:00 a.m. (Boots on\, ready to go) \nLOCATION: Near El Escorpion Park in West Hills on Highlander Rd. (SEE MAP FOR EXACT MEETUP LOCATION) \nELEVATION GAIN: 1200’+ \nDISTANCE: 6 miles \nDURATION: 3+ hours \nPACE: 2.5 mph on the trails and much slower on the climbs \nLEVEL: Intermediate hiker looking to challenge themselves \nMY CELL # IS 805-358-5972

SUMMARY:Baldy from the Village Out and Back
DESCRIPTION:Advanced Hikers Only\, with Previous Summit Experience! \nWe’ll be taking the Bear Canyon Trail that starts in Baldy Village and hiking to the summit and returning the same way. \nBe careful where you park! Do not park in the lot across from the Baldy Lodge & Saloon. You must find a place on the street that is not restricted. \nDistance: 12 miles \nElevation Gain: 6\,000ft \nElevation at the Summit: 10\,064ft. \nTotal Duration: 7-9.5 hours depending on your hiking speed. \nRating: 9/10 Strenuous \nTrail: Unmaintained trail but well traveled. \nESSENTIALS: \n2 Liters of water (Minimum) \nSunscreen \nHat \nSnacks & Lunch \nHiking Poles (Recommended) \nLayered clothing (can be windy & chilly at the summit) \nTHE PLAN: \nThis is the original trail to the Mt. Baldy summit that was first used in the late 1880’s and 1890’s. At that time travelers would be brought by horseback to a stone lodge at the summit via this route for overnight alpine getaways. Today\, this is considered a must do training hike for Mt. Whitney and other high peaks in the Sierra’s (no\, not for the horses… ) Why? In six miles you will ascend 6\,000ft\, which places this grade definitely in the ‘aggressive’ category. \nThe trail begins about 100 yards south of the NFS Baldy Visitor Center and behind the church. We will assemble in the church parking lot in view of Mt. Baldy road. \nTo reach the trail head we proceed up a road for about 1/2 mile passing by some extraordinary private homes nestled in this beautiful canyon with a year long stream. Its easy to see why this road was the first to be settled in Baldy area. Once we leave the cabins behind the real hike begins. \nFour Part Hike: \nPart 1 is the relatively easy to moderate initial climb out of the village. The first half of this section is shaded with oak and your typical Southern California vegetation as it follows the creek canyon. This section ends (mentally anyway) when you reach the lush open area of the Bear Flat camp site. Note: There is no water past this point. \nPart 2 is basically switch-backing up a steep east\, south-east mountain slope. The switchbacks are quite numerous\, and your goal should be to ascend this section before the morning sun gets to work as the trail is totally exposed here. It’s not a particularly pleasant hike at this point. \nPart 3 begins as you top the east facing slope and start working up the ridge-line that will take you much of the way towards the summit and into the alpine forest zone. The grade is steep here\, and as you progress\, quick rest stops are perfectly OK to let your leg muscles stop screaming. The views on this section are actually quite stunning\, with vistas of all the surrounding San Gabriel ranges. You will pass through two or three mountain saddles with relatively level ground and some shaded areas on the way\, but frankly\, its up and up and up for most of this hike. \nSection 4 takes you to the summit and here you will transition out of the alpine zone and into a mixed alpine high-altitude environment with lots of ground-up decomposing granite. You will cross a razor back ridge that presents no problems in the summer time and proceed on up to the final push to the summit. Don’t be fooled by what seems like your first glimpse of the summit\, you are actually viewing West Baldy. As you approach\, you will actually be traversing along the slope of West Baldy before beginning the final push to the Mt. Baldy Summit. Keep a sharp eye out for the trail marker and bear right to reach Mt. Baldy proper. You will soon see piles of stones built as wind shelters in the distance as you look towards the summit. That’s where you’re headed and you’ll be there in no time! \n* * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * \nPLEASE – Know your limits and abilities.
