SUMMARY:Santa Rosa Trail Loop through Box Canyon - Gentler Intermediate
DESCRIPTION:Wildwood Park is one of the most versatile local parks there is\, with 27 miles of trails skittering through rocky cliffs\, cacti-filled desert environs\, volcanic rock\, riparian forest\, and a cool\, watery canyon. Wildwood’s archetypal western look served as the set for The Rifleman\, Gunsmoke\, and Wagon Train back in the day\, as well as the movie Spartacus. You’ll be rewarded with beautiful vistas of the Conejo Valley\, Santa Rosa Valley and some interesting properties including the train-collector yard. \nWe’ll start on the Mesa trail and proceed to the Box Canyon. Then\, descend down through Box Canyon onto the paved Rocky High Road\, the train yard and up the Shooting Star trail to the Santa Rosa trail. We will enjoy the views of Mount Clef Ridge on both sides and head back to our cars. \nIt is about 6 1/2 miles and approximately 1000+’ of elevation gain. \nDirections: \nFrom the 101 in Thousand Oaks\, turn north on Lynn Road and continue 2.6 miles to Avenida De Los Arboles\, then turn left. Continue for about a mile to the end and turn into the Wildwood parking lot on the left. \nFrom the 118\, travel west to the 23\, exit at Avenida De Los Arboles and turn right. Drive further than you remember having to drive to this trailhead (10 or 15 minutes). Turn left into the parking lot when the road ends. \nPLEASE READ BELOW IN ITS ENTIRETY\nPlease review the guidelines (link to the guidelines) to join our hikes.\nRestrictions apply for your safety and ours: \n\nDon’t show up unless you’re shown on the “Attending” list.\nPlan on KEEPING UP with the group and completing the entire hike at a moderate pace\, or please find an alternative hike that better suits your hiking level.\nNo “Plus Ones” or dogs on Weekday Trailblazer hikes.\n\nDISCLAIMER / RELEASE OF LIABILITY\nThe hike host is a volunteer and not responsible for the group. SUMMARY:Los Robles Trail with option to Angel Vista ~ Intermediate Hike
DESCRIPTION:Space Mountain is the name for Los Robles Trail West\, starting at Moorpark Road in Thousand Oaks and switchbacking up the hill to the west. No one seems to know why it’s called Space Mountain\, though maybe the Disney ride inspired it. Maybe former major league pitcher Bill “Spaceman” Lee had something to do with it. Maybe it’s the final frontier. Come out and throw your equally ludicrous guess into the ring. \nWe will hike to the fireroad just after the new section…and you can opt to go up to Angel Vista for the views. If you go all the way\, you will hike just under or over 8 miles total with about 1350’ of gain. I may not make it all the way…I’m nursing a post-operative hand. If you turn around at the fireroad\, it will be shorter and less gain. Duh. If you don’t know the way\, stay with me. \nDirections: From the 101 in Thousand Oaks\, turn south on Moorpark Road. We will meet in the parking lot at the corner of Moorpark and Greenmeadow. \nPlease review our guidelines to participate in our hikes. Restrictions apply for your safety and ours: \n\nPlease don’t show up unless you’re on the “Attending” list\nUnregistered or waitlisted will be turned away\nSorry\, no “Plus Ones” on this hike\nNo dogs\n\nDISCLAIMER / RELEASE OF LIABILITY \nIMPORTANT\, PLEASE READ BELOW IN ITS ENTIRETY: \nThe hike host is a volunteer and not responsible for the group. SUMMARY:COSF: Water: Where it comes from\, how we use it\, where it goes—& why it matters
DESCRIPTION:Please join Conejo Open Space Foundation for a live online presentation by local expert Jennifer Lancaster who will discuss the origins of our water\, how it’s used\, where it winds up\, and whether those practices are sustainable at their current levels. After the presentations\, there will be a Q & A session for attendees to ask about issues of prime interest to them. \nAlthough the Conejo Valley received unusually abundant rain this year\, water will continue to be of critical concern for Ventura County residents and our county’s primary industry\, agriculture. Jennifer will also go over new challenges that water managers face from the state’s changing hydrology\, and how we can better use the water we get through conservation and planning. \nMs. Lancaster is Principal Resource Specialist at Calleguas Municipal Water District. She received her Bachelor of Science degree in biology from the University of California\, Riverside and her Master of Science in biology from California State University\, Northridge. She began her career as a biological science technician for the National Park Service and has also taught at Moorpark and Pierce Colleges. \nHeld quarterly since 2019\, the COSF Speaker Series has included climate authority Dr. Sean Anderson as well as wildlife experts Dr. Dan Cooper\, Dr. Seth Riley\, Dr. Jessica Sanchez\, and the National Wildlife Federation’s regional executive director Beth Pratt. \nTo sign up for this event\, go to the registration page on the COSF website and fill in the form. While this is a free event\, we encourage a donation of $10 to support future Speaker Series presentations. \nThis talk is sponsored in part by Calleguas Municipal Water District and the City of Thousand Oaks.

SUMMARY:Hill & Hawk Canyons to trails with wildflower blooms - Gentler Intermediate
DESCRIPTION:This is a second hike for Thursday at Hill Canyon in Camarillo. It is a gentler hike. We will start at the parking area in Hill Canyon\, cross the bridge over the runoff creek\, and stroll a mile before turning onto the Hawk Canyon Trail. The Hawk Canyon Trail connects to Western Plateau Trail and Peninsula Trail which runs back down rejoining the Western Plateau Trail to The Hawk Canyon Trail. Then\, we will hike up the hidden trail and descend back into Hill Canyon and follow it all the way back to the parking lot. We will take a few breaks along the way to wait for everyone to catch up. Hopefully there will still be some flowers\, but it is drying up a bit. This is approximately 6 miles with an elevation gain of approximately 1000 feet. The trail is a bit overgrown so wear long pants and check for ticks after the hike. \nDirections: \nFrom Moorpark Road in the Santa Rosa Valley\, drive west on Santa Rosa Road for 3.7 miles\, turn left (south) on Hill Canyon Road for about 0.6 miles to the parking lot. \nFrom the 101 Freeway in Camarillo\, take exit 52 onto Santa Rosa Road and drive northeast. After 5 miles\, turn right onto Hill Canyon Road for about 0.6 miles to the parking lot. \nPlease review the guidelines (link to the guidelines) to join our hikes.\nRestrictions apply for your safety and ours: \n\nPlease do not show up unless you’re shown on the “Attending” list.\nNo dogs.\nNo “Plus Ones” Weekday Trailblazer hikes.\n\nDISCLAIMER/RELEASE OF LIABILITY – PLEASE READ IN ITS ENTIRETY\nThe hike host is a volunteer and not responsible for the group. SUMMARY:Dos Vientos Loop from Mountain Creek Dr – Gentler Friendly
DESCRIPTION:UPDATE: Please review our guidelines to participate in our hikes. Here are some highlights and a link to the guidelines: \nhttps://www.meetup.com/The-Weekday-Trailblazers/about/ \nRestrictions apply for your safety and ours: \n\nDon’t show up unless you’re on the “Attending” list\nNo “Plus Ones” on this hike\nPlan on completing the entire hike at a reasonable pace or please find an alternative hike that better suits your hiking level.\n\nFor this circle tour of Dos Vientos we will start at the Potrero Ridge trailhead off Mountain Creek Drive in Newbury Park\, climb to the top of the ridge and follow it west to the heart of the Dos Vientos trail system. From there we’ll make a clockwise loop along several trails\, starting with Sierra Vista\, followed by Las Brisas and El Cerro. El Cerro will drop us off at Via Las Brisas where we will have a 1/2 mile or so sidewalk stroll to the Potrero Ridge trail which takes us back to our cars. I previewed this trail on Saturday and it was spectacular. The monkey flowers have gone bananas (sorry) along with masses of purple sage and cliff aster. There are also great views of the Channel Islands to the west. \nMy Gaia clocked this hike at just over 6 miles with 800 feet elevation gain. Total time at a leisurely pace was 2 1/2 hours. \nThere is no cover on this hike as it climbs up and down the ridges of Dos Vientos\, so be sure to bring plenty of water and protection from the sun. \nDriving Directions: \nDriving Directions: From the 101 freeway\, turn south onto Wendy Drive\, towards the ocean. Continue for about 0.7 miles and turn right at Borchard Rd and head west 0.5 miles. Turn left on S. Reino Rd taking this south for about a mile. You will pass an Albertson’s supermarket\, then turn right onto Maurice Drive and right on Mountain Creek Drive. There is plenty of street parking in this residential neighborhood near the trailhead. \nDISCLAIMER / RELEASE OF LIABILITY\nIMPORTANT\, PLEASE READ BELOW IN ITS ENTIRETY: \nThe hike host is a volunteer and not responsible for the group. Safety should be a priority for everyone in the group. Please treat this meet-up as hiking with a group of friends.
