SUMMARY:Potrero Ridge from Mountain Creek Dr – Gentler Friendly
DESCRIPTION:For this adventure\, we’ll hike a lollipop loop\, starting at the Potrero Ridge trailhead off Mountain Creek Drive in Newbury Park\, climb to the top of the ridge and follow it west to the heart of the Dos Vientos trail system. From there we’ll make a clockwise loop along several trails\, starting with Sierra Vista\, then return to the cars via Potrero Ridge. About half of this hike will cover trails from our normal Dos Vientos loop hike\, but the other half we be on different trails. If is it clear we will see views of Oxnard and perhaps the islands. \nThe distance is 6 miles and the elevation gain is 1200 feet. \nThere is no cover on this hike as it climbs up and down the ridges of Dos Vientos\, so be sure to bring plenty of water and protection from the sun. \nUPDATE: Please review our guidelines to participate in our hikes. You will pass an Albertson’s supermarket\, then turn right onto Maurice Drive and right on Mountain Creek Drive. SUMMARY:Rosewood Trail to Angel Vista - Gentler Intermediate
DESCRIPTION:We will start (early to beat the heat) our hike near the beginning of Regal Oak Ct. on the lower Rosewood Trail\, a dirt trail heading up a shaded ravine at the base of the mountains\, and continue to the usual Rosewood trail. Rosewood trail presents a clear view over the 101 Freeway carving up the Conejo Valley. This is a preview of the panorama to come at Angel Vista\, and the view grows larger as you hike higher up the mountain. SUMMARY:Doin' the Big\, Fig Newton Canyon (Fast Paced)

On our way there\, we’ll cross the creek\, pass under an oak canopy\, and come out into an opening. We are starting this Wildwood hike from Wildwood Avenue NOT Wildwood Park. \nOne of many ways to experience versatile Wildwood Park\, we’ll start on the ridge\, and travel down to the Santa Rosa Valley on the Shooting Star connector trail. Once at the bottom\, we’ll hike to the end of the trail and take a break while viewing the castle gates and giant model train system. SUMMARY:Wildwood Central Park ~ Gentler\, Slower\, Intermediate
DESCRIPTION:This hike is in addition to Laurie’s hike on the same day and same park\, but a totally different area. We will also go a bit slower and we will skip the Moonridge Trail and head strait to the Stagecoach Bluff Trail via the Mesa Trail. Hopefully\, we can meet up with Laurie’s hike for lunch. \nWildwood Park in Thousand Oaks is one of the most versatile local parks there is\, with 27 miles of trails skittering through rocky cliffs\, cacti-filled desert environs\, volcanic rock\, riparian forest\, and a cool\, watery canyon. Highlights of the hike include waterfalls incorporating 40’ Paradise waterfalls along with a long creek\, Indian caves\, volcanic rock cliffs\, and wildflowers throughout. Wildwood’s archetypal western look served as the set for The Rifleman\, Gunsmoke\, and Wagon Train back in the day\, as well as the movie Spartacus. Currently\, it’s very beautiful with an abundance of wildflowers and California poppies in addition to powerful waterfalls. \nIt will start at the main parking lot for Wildwood and pass through various trails with bridges\, waterfalls\, crossing streams and tree canopies over approximately 5 miles with about a 800’ elevation gain/loss. \nDirections:\nFrom the 101 in Thousand Oaks\, turn north on Lynn Road and continue 2.6 miles to Avenida De Los Arboles\, then turn left. Continue for about a mile to the end and turn into the Wildwood parking lot on the left. \nFrom the 118\, travel west to the 23\, exit at Avenida De Los Arboles and turn right. Drive further than you remember having to drive to this trailhead (10 or 15 minutes). SUMMARY:Conejo Canyons/Western plateau Loop via Lichen Trail - Gentler Intermediate
DESCRIPTION:This hike starts at the Hill Canyon Trail and continues to the Lichen Trail via the Western Plateau and Outlaw Trails. At the peak of the ridge that separates the Western Plateau from the Santa Rosa Valley\, you’ll have amazing views of a beautiful system of deeply eroded canyons\, plateaus\, and ridgelines in the northwest portion of the Conejo Valley. We will then hike to the power station via the Lichen Trail and take a short break to enjoy the view. SUMMARY:Conejo Mountain's Majesty
DESCRIPTION:Please join us for a hike from Dos Vientos Community Park to the very tippy-top of Conejo Mountain\, to the north. This 6-mile hike has a total elevation gain and loss of 1\,450 feet (at least\, according to GaiaGPS). \nWe will cross Dos Vientos Community Park to Via Ricardo\, then climb the Powerline Trail to the “teardrop”\, then scale the fairly steep goat trail to the meadow at the top of Conejo Mountain\, where we’ll make our way west to the rocky peak. As this implies\, the climb from the teardrop to the meadow is pretty steep\, so we’ll take our time there. \nHowever\, once at the top\, we’ll have a truly spectacular view of Boney Mountain\, the Oxnard Plain\, the Channel Islands\, and if it’s really clear\, all the way east to Mt. Baldy and the eastern San Gabriels. \nWe’ll descend the (steep\, but not quite so steep) route back down to the upper Powerline Trail\, and retrace our steps to the cars. \nOptional Brunch / Lunch afterwards at Country Harvest  Restaurant in Newbury Park \nDIRECTIONS\nExit 101 at Borchard\, and drive southwest past Wendy\, Reino\, and up and over the pass into the Dos Vientos subdivision. DESCRIPTION:Meet at the Rosewood sign\, which is on the Regal Oak Ct. and Lynn Rd. intersection. The hike is about 5 miles with an elevation gain/loss approximately 900’. \nWe’ll walk a short distance on Lynn road to the lower Rosewood Trail\, then take the dirt trail up a shaded ravine and continue on the Rosewood trail to the Angel Vista peak. \nRosewood trail presents a clear view over the 101 Freeway carving up the Conejo Valley. This is a preview of the panorama to come at Angel Vista\, and the view grows larger as you hike higher up the mountain. SUMMARY:Rancho Sierra Vista\, Peace\, Love\, and Joy - 8:30 Start
DESCRIPTION:While the heat is once again with us\, we will take this at a gentler pace and we will take some breaks to let slower hikers catch up. \nWe will start in the parking lot at Rancho Sierra Vista and head up through grasslands and chaparral from the Rancho Sierra Vista trailhead\, then climb up Boney Mountain Trail for some fantastic views west to Port Hueneme\, Oxnard and the Pacific Ocean. We may see Santa Cruz Island as well as the Los Padres Mountain range if it’s not hazy. If it’s really clear\, we’ll catch a glimpse of Mount Baldy in the distance to our east. \nThis out and back hike is about 6 miles with 1100 feet of elevation gain. The hike will start in SMMNRA and pass into Point Mugu State Park and Wilderness. It’s mostly single track and fire road. Dogs are not permitted in State Park wilderness areas. \nPlease bring ample hydration. There is poison oak at the Monument; if you don’t know what it looks like\, stay on the paths and don’t stray into the woods. \nNote: We will meet at the Rancho Sierra Vista paved parking lot. DESCRIPTION:Come and join your COSCA and COSF friends to fix up some of Conejo Valley’s most popular trails in Wildwood Park! \nWe’re still recovering from the many rainstorms we had last winter. You can help us restore them during the Conejo Open Space Conservation Agency’s (COSCA) Fall Trail Work Day on Saturday October 21. DESCRIPTION:This gentler intermediate hike allows us a chance to get in a hike before our weekend events kick in.\nThis is an out-and-back 5.7 mile hike with a gain/loss of +/-1200’. It provides a great overview of the Thousand Oaks area\, the ocean and the western Santa Monica Mountains. We’ll take the narrow trail that zigzags its way up and then take the trail to the power pole at the top. You’ll be enjoying 360 degree views toward Simi Peak\, Lang Ranch and Woodridge trails. \nDirections: \nFrom 101: Exit at Westlake Boulevard and turn north (away from the ocean). Drive 4.2 miles to Lang Ranch Parkway\, then turn right. We will go at a slightly slower pace than the Intermediate Trailblazer Hike\, and we will finish in 2 1/2 hours. Faster hikers are welcome to join us so long as they are willing to hike at the slower pace of the group or wait at the forks on the trail. DESCRIPTION:From the Kanan Rd trailhead\, we’ll jump on the Backbone Trail headed west\, crossing over Zuma Ridge Motorway toward Trancas Canyon. On our way there\, we’ll cross a stream (haha)\, pass under an oak canopy (a little\, anyway)\, and come out into an opening. At the opening\, look toward the sandstone formations in the distance\, and you’ll see Upper Newton Falls spilling (ah\, those were the days) through them like a ribbon. \nThis is an out and back hike for a total of 8 miles\, with 1475′ total elevation gain. A little shade\, a lot of sun\, all single track – prepare accordingly. \nDirections: \nFrom the 101\, go south (toward beaches) on Kanan Road about 8 miles to just before the third tunnel (T1). DESCRIPTION:Meet at the Rosewood sign\, which is on the Regal Oak Ct. and Lynn Rd. intersection. The hike is about 5 miles with an elevation gain/loss approximately 900’. \nWe’ll walk a short distance on Lynn road to the lower Rosewood Trail\, then take the dirt trail up a shaded ravine and continue on the Rosewood trail to the Angel Vista peak. \nRosewood trail presents a clear view over the 101 Freeway carving up the Conejo Valley. This is a preview of the panorama to come at Angel Vista\, and the view grows larger as you hike higher up the mountain. DESCRIPTION:Let’s reacquaint ourselves with the spectacular rock formations and beautiful scenery in Red Rock Canyon\, between Topanga and Calabasas. This hike is 5.25 miles and 1\,000′ total feet of gain\, loss\, gain\, loss\, gain\, and loss :-). Turn left on Mulholland and pass the headquarters of the Santa Monica Mountains National Recreation Area at King Gillette Ranch\, and continue until the (somewhat obscure) right hand turn onto Stunt Road. SUMMARY:Gentler Friendly ~ Oak Creek Canyon\, Los Robles East In/Out
DESCRIPTION:This is meeting in the same area (Los Robles Open Space) as Laurie’s longer hike\, but in a different parking area (the end of Greeenmeadow Avenue). This hike is much shorter (5 miles) and slower\, for those of you who want a more leisurely pace. \nOak Creek Canyon Trail is a rather special trail in Los Robles Open Space that is designed for the blind as well as the sighted and is shaded by a canopy of oaks. \nWe will start at Oak Creek Canyon and proceed to a connector trail a short distance until we meet a junction with Los Robles Trail East. Along this trail\, you’ll travel through a couple of very nice oak groves\, and get some great views throughout the Los Robles Trail East. We will turn around when we hit 2 1/2 miles. \nThis hike will be a five-mile In/Out with about a 900’ elevation gain/loss. \nDirection: From the 101 freeway\, Exit Moorpark and drive to the south end of Moorpark Rd\, turn right on Greenmeadow Ave.\, and go about a quarter mile to the parking lot. Maybe it’s the final frontier. SUMMARY:Rosewood Trail: Lynn to Angel Vista - Gentler Intermediate
DESCRIPTION:Meet at the Rosewood sign\, which is on the Regal Oak Ct. and Lynn Rd. intersection. The hike is about 5 miles with an elevation gain/loss approximately 900’. \nWe’ll walk a short distance on Lynn road to the lower Rosewood Trail\, then take the dirt trail up a shaded ravine and continue on the Rosewood trail to the Angel Vista peak. \nRosewood trail presents a clear view over the 101 Freeway carving up the Conejo Valley. This is a preview of the panorama to come at Angel Vista\, and the view grows larger as you hike higher up the mountain. Before the ranchers\, Chumash Indians and grizzly bears tromped out the slender trails in the native grasses that became today’s open fire roads. Rabbits\, bobcats\, owls\, hawks\, deer\, and coyotes still call the sycamores\, oaks\, streams\, and sulfur springs of the canyons home. Cheeseboro Canyon is home to the largest concentration of birds of prey outside of Alaska\, as well as the Valley Oak\, the largest oak trees in the US (possibly the world!). \nhttp://photos2.meetupstatic.com/photos/event/4/e/2/c/event_85460012.jpeg \nOur 7 mile hike will carve a loop pattern out of the network of trails and connect Cheeseboro Canyon to adjacent Palo Comado Canyon before returning us to our cars. SUMMARY:Hill Canyon Santa Rosa Regional Park
DESCRIPTION:This is the slower hike for Tuesday\, there will be a faster hike posted as well. This hike is in Camarillo at Hill Canyon in Santa Rosa Regional Park. We will start at the parking area in Hill Canyon\, cross the bridge over the runoff creek\, and stroll a mile before turning onto the fire road up the Western Plateau. We will go straight at the crest of the fire road and then turn on the Plateau Rim loop and then return down the Hawk Canyon Trail. The Hawk Canyon Trail connects to Western Plateau Trail back to the parking lot. We will take a few breaks along the way to wait for everyone to catch up. This is approximately 6 miles with an elevation gain of approximately 1000 feet. Last time I was there the trail was a bit overgrown so wear long pants and check for ticks after the hike. \nDirections: \nFrom Moorpark Road in the Santa Rosa Valley\, drive west on Santa Rosa Road for 3.7 miles\, turn left (south) on Hill Canyon Road for about 0.6 miles to the parking lot. \nFrom the 101 Freeway in Camarillo\, take exit 52 onto Santa Rosa Road and drive northeast. SUMMARY:Rosewood Trail: Lynn to Angel Vista - Gentler Intermediate
DESCRIPTION:Meet at the Rosewood sign\, which is on the Regal Oak Ct. and Lynn Rd. intersection. The hike is about 5 miles with an elevation gain/loss approximately 900’. \nWe’ll walk a short distance on Lynn road to the lower Rosewood Trail\, then take the dirt trail up a shaded ravine and continue on the Rosewood trail to the Angel Vista peak. \nRosewood trail presents a clear view over the 101 Freeway carving up the Conejo Valley. This is a preview of the panorama to come at Angel Vista\, and the view grows larger as you hike higher up the mountain. SUMMARY:Wildwood Central Park (Fast Paced)
DESCRIPTION:With the limited daylight we will do this shorter hike. \nWildwood Park in Thousand Oaks is one of the most versatile local parks there is\, with 27 miles of trails skittering through rocky cliffs\, cacti-filled desert environs\, volcanic rock\, riparian forest\, and a cool\, watery canyon. Highlights of the hike include waterfalls incorporating 40’ Paradise waterfalls along with a long creek\, Indian caves\, volcanic rock cliffs\, and wildflowers throughout. Wildwood’s archetypal western look served as the set for The Rifleman\, Gunsmoke\, and Wagon Train back in the day\, as well as the movie Spartacus. \nIt will start at the trailhead that has steps down to the Moonridge Trail. We’ll take the trail down by the teepee to Wildwood Canyon Trail\, pass by Paradise Falls\, pick up Lizard Rock Trail\, and go by a water treatment plant on our way to Lizard Rock. We’ll take Stagecoach Bluff Trail for some more elevation\, and either catch Mesa Trail or Moonridge Trail back to the parking lot. We’ll pass through various trails with bridges\, crossing streams\, and have some tree canopies for approximately 5+ miles with about a 1200’ elevation gain/loss. We will take a break somewhere in our travels. \nDirections: \nFrom the 101 in Thousand Oaks\, turn north on Lynn Road and continue 2.6 miles to Avenida De Los Arboles\, then turn left. Continue for about a mile to the end and turn into the Wildwood parking lot on the left. \nFrom the 118\, travel west to the 23\, exit at Avenida De Los Arboles and turn right. Drive further than you remember having to drive to this trailhead (10 or 15 minutes). SUMMARY:Western Plateau Mt. Elliott - Gentler Friendly - 8:30 Start
DESCRIPTION:Meet at the Conejo Canyons trailhead next to the Thousand Oaks Recycling Center on Conejo Center Drive\, near the end of Rancho Conejo. We’ll walk across Rancho Conejo and take the fire road down to new bridge construction site and then we will go to Five Points. From Five Points\, we will take the Western Plateau trail up to intersection with the Outlaw Loop trail. We will take the Outlaw Loop trail to Mt Elliott and then we will take a single track trail back to the Western Plateau trail and then back to the parking lot. Note: We are not going up to the transmitter tower on this hike! \nOn this hike\, you’ll see the Conejo Airfield (honest!)\, Mt. Rex’s backside\, at least two wrecked cars\, lots of fennel\, and maybe a rattlesnake and a tarantula or two. Plus\, impressive views of the Santa Susannah Mountains (if it’s clear)\, two or three rocky canyons\, and the new biotech developments nearby. \nThe total distance of this loop hike is a smidge under 6 miles.
