SUMMARY:Hill Canyon starting at Santa Rosa Regional Park
DESCRIPTION:This is a second hike for Thursday and we will start at 8:00. It is going to be hot\, but Camarillo often has a little cloud cover early in the morning. If we are done by 10:00 it will not have hit 80 degrees yet! We will start this hike at Santa Rosa Regional Park at the parking area in Hill Canyon\, cross the bridge over the runoff creek\, and stroll a mile before turning onto the fire road up the Western Plateau. We will continue straight at the crest of the fire road and then turn left on the Plateau Rim loop and finally descend down the Hawk Canyon Trail. There are a lot of trees on the Hawk Canyon trail. The Hawk Canyon Trail connects to Western Plateau Trail back to the parking lot. This is approximately 6 miles with an elevation gain of approximately 1000 feet.\nDirections: \nFrom Moorpark Road in the Santa Rosa Valley\, drive west on Santa Rosa Road for 3.7 miles\, turn left (south) on Hill Canyon Road for about 0.6 miles to the parking lot. \nFrom the 101 Freeway in Camarillo\, take exit 52 onto Santa Rosa Road and drive northeast. After 5 miles\, turn right onto Hill Canyon Road for about 0.6 miles to the parking lot. \nPlease review the guidelines (link to the guidelines) to join our hikes. \nRestrictions apply for your safety and ours: \n\nPlease do not show up unless you’re shown on the “Attending” list.\nNo dogs.\nNo “Plus Ones” Weekday Trailblazer hikes.\n\nDISCLAIMER/RELEASE OF LIABILITY – PLEASE READ IN ITS ENTIRETY \nThe hike host is a volunteer and not responsible for the group. Safety should be a priority for everyone in the group. Please treat this meet-up as hiking with a group of friends. If you become fatigued and unable to continue the hike\, it is expected you will advise the hike host of this and return to our starting point on your own. If you are able to proceed\, it is expected that you will maintain line of sight with other members of the group at all times and help to promote the group’s safety and fitness goals. \nOutdoor sports and other events we plan can be inherently dangerous and accidents may happen. By participating in any posted event\, you are taking responsibility for your own safety and well-being. The Weekday Trailblazers Meetup Group and its organizers are not trained leaders and we do not confirm the qualifications of any of its members to lead or participate in trips. All participants take full responsibility for their own actions. \nIf you choose to sign up for this or any Weekday Trailblazers Meetup event\, you are releasing the Weekday Trailblazers Meetup Group and its organizers from all liability in case of possible injuries. SUMMARY:Los Robles trailhead\, walking down to Las Padres and up and around
DESCRIPTION:NOTE:\nIt will be hot Thursday\, but this hike has lots of trees so hopefully 8:30 will work. From there we will loop around and come back to the Moorpark trailhead via the Los Robles trail. Some hikers may want to add a mile by going to the Greenmeadow parking lot at the end of the hike and taking the trail back to Moorpark\, but you can also return to the Moorpark parking lot before that turn off. This should be around 4.5 to 5 miles with maybe 800 feet elevation gain. \n“Robles” is Spanish for oaks\, and we’ll see plenty of them on this beautiful hike. \nTrailhead Directions: From the 101 in Thousand Oaks\, turn south on Moorpark Road. Go to the end of Moorpark DO NOT turn down Greenmeadow\, just park at the end of Moorpark. . \nPlease review the guidelines to participate in our hikes. SUMMARY:Encinal to Trancas Canyon and Bridge - Intermediate Hike
DESCRIPTION:This out-and-back hike on the Backbone Trail is about 8 miles with about 1\,550′ of total elevation gain (there will be a shorter 5+ mile option\, see below). The hike starts and ends at our usual trailhead for the Encinal Canyon hike. We’ll cross the road\, descend into a shaded single-track trail with a couple of lovely small water crossings\, then ascend until we get to the big tree that we use as a rendezvous point when we hike the Newton Canyon trail. That’s 5.3 miles. I will turn around at that point but Kathy will continue on and lead the longer hike to the bridge over the creek\, completing a round trip of 8.3 miles. Along the way we’ll see the monument commemorating Arnold Schwarzenegger’s donation of the last 40 acres to complete the end-to-end Backbone Trail. \nTrailhead Directions: Exit 101 at Kanan Road\, and drive south to the Mulholland Road intersection\, where you’ll turn right. Keep to the left\, as Encinal splits off within the first half mile or so. Drive west on Encinal to the parking lot at the trailhead. \nPlease review the guidelines to participate in our hikes. Here are some highlights and a link to the guidelines: \nRestrictions apply for your safety and ours: \n\nDon’t show up unless you’re on the “Attending” list\nNo “Plus Ones” on this hike\nPlan on completing the entire hike at a moderate pace or please find an alternative hike that better suits your hiking level.\nAll participants must be 18 or older\, or accompanied by a parent or legal guardian.\nNo dogs on Weekday Trailblazers hikes\n\nDISCLAIMER / RELEASE OF LIABILITY\nIMPORTANT\, PLEASE READ BELOW IN ITS ENTIRETY:\nThe hike host is a volunteer and not responsible for the group. SUMMARY:Rancho Potrero trails loop in Rancho Sierra Vista/Satwiwa ~ Gentler Intermediate
DESCRIPTION:To beat the heat\, we will start at 8:00am. The hike begins at the parking lot to the Ranch Potrero Trail\, turning right onto Olympia Farm Trail. We will check out old Olympia Farms Amphitheater and Picnic area and loop back to Ranch Potrero Trail. At the juncture of Sycamore Canyon Fire Road\, we will turn left onto Rancho Sierra Vista. \nThis area is pretty exposed\, but offers a nice ocean breeze a majority of the time. “Satwiwa” is Chumashan and directly translates to “the bluffs\,” which can also translate to “higher places\,” and is the Chumashan name used for a former village near the current culture center.\nhttps://www.conejovalleyguide.com \nThe eastern area is moderately flat and you will see bluffs to the west\, leading to a moderate hill. At the peak\, you’ll have awesome views of Big Sycamore Canyon Trail\, which descend from Satwiwa to the Pacific Ocean along a historic Chumash trade route\, as well as toward Boney. We will continue hiking the Loop Trail on the other side when we return to the Sycamore Canyon Fire Road and head back to the car. \nThis is about 5-6 miles with an elevation gain/loss of approximately 1000’ \nDirections:\nExit 101 at Lynn Road in Thousand Oaks. Go west for 5.5 miles\, and turn left\, under the Rancho Sierra Vista arch\, into the National Park. Drive to the end of the driveway\, and park near the restrooms. \nNOTE: Please review theguidelines to participate in our hikes. Here are some highlights – Restrictions apply for your safety and ours:\n• Don’t show up unless you’re on the “Attending” list\n• No “Plus Ones” on this hike\n• Plan on completing the entire hike at moderate rate(2.5 MPH)\n• Please bring plenty of water. \nDISCLAIMER / RELEASE OF LIABILITY \nThe hike host is a volunteer and not responsible for the group. SUMMARY:Ray Miller Trail in La Jolla Canyon ~ Gentler Intermediate
DESCRIPTION:We will start this hike at 8:30 and go to the fire road.\nThe trail is an awesome blend of ocean and mountain views in Malibu’s La Jolla Canyon. We will start from the trailhead which follows the canyon eastward\, away from the ocean. Then\, it quickly brings you back toward the ocean at a gradual incline. There’s a great lookout spot where it gives you a breathtaking view of the Pacific Coast Highway against the backdrop of the Pacific Ocean\, with sweeping views toward Mugu Rock on the west and Sycamore Cove on the east. After another peak\, you’ll start a slight decline that brings you to the fire road where we will turn around. Along the way\, we’ll be treated to magnificent sweeping views of La Jolla and Big Sycamore Canyons\, and of course\, the largest ocean in the world. On a clear day\, the Channel Islands are easily within sight\, although the marine layer has been pretty prominent this summer.\nThis is a 5-6 mile out and back hike with an elevation gain/loss of about 1000’. It will be hot so bring lots of water and a hat. \nDirections: \nFrom Los Angeles\, take the Pacific Coast Highway (PCH) north\, 22 miles from Malibu Canyon Rd. Across the street from Thornhill Broome Beach is the entrance to La Jolla Canyon. It is very clearly marked. Turn right. \nFrom Ventura\, take PCH eastward\, and turn left 4 miles after Las Posas Road into La Jolla Canyon. \nHeads up: There is a parking fee in the lot (you can try leaving your pass in the window although they are generally not used in the summer). There is free parking on PCH just a short walk to the trailhead. \nPlease review the guidelines (guidelines) to join our hikes.\nRestrictions apply for your safety and ours: \n\nDon’t show up unless you’re shown on the “Attending” list.\nPlan on KEEPING UP with the group and completing the entire hike at a moderate pace.\n\nDISCLAIMER/RELEASE OF LIABILITY – PLEASE READ IN ITS ENTIRETY\nThe hike host is a volunteer and not responsible for the group. The terrain is a mix of single and double-file trail and open fire road. \nThe total distance will be approximately 6+ miles with 1400+ feet elevation gain. \nThe hike is mainly open hillside and chaparral. The weather can range from calm to windy and from warm to hot. Dress accordingly. We will stop at Simi Peak to grab a snack and enjoy the great views there\, and return to the traihead via China Flat and then the fire road back to our starting point. \nParking: \nParking is free at the Lindero Canyon Trailhead. Please do not leave anything of value in your car\, at this or any other trailhead. \nDirections: \nFrom the 101 Freeway – Exit the 101 freeway at Lindero Canyon Road and turn north toward the Simi Hills. Drive about 4 miles on Lindero Canyon Road to Wembly Ave. and make a U-turn. After the U-turn\, the China Flats Trailhead will be on the right. Park along the right side of the road and we will meet in front of the marked China Flats Trailhead. \nDISCLAIMER / RELEASE OF LIABILITY \nIMPORTANT\, PLEASE READ BELOW IN ITS ENTIRETY: \nThe hike host is a volunteer and not responsible for the group. SUMMARY:8 mile ~ Encinal Canyon to Top of the World ~ Intermediate Hike
DESCRIPTION:Encinal Canyon is named for encina\, the Spanish word for the holm oak\, a lovely Mediterranean tree with holly characteristics. Holm oaks are one of the main trees used to establish truffle orchards\, but we’ll be nosing around the canyon strictly for its beauty. \nThe trail from Encinal is a smooth\, firm\, and well-traveled single track\, swooping and winding with a constant\, gentle slope. We’ll have fabulous views of the coast for much of the way. Close to the top\, we’ll take on the slightly steeper Etz Meloy Motorway\, then the last tenth of a mile is up a seldom-used trail to the isolated peak\, where we’ll both lose and catch our breath with a 360-degree view. \nFrom our perch above it all we’ll see Sandstone Peak to the west\, Simi Valley to the north\, Ladyface and Mt Baldy to the east and the Channel Islands to the south and west. \nThis is a 8 mile out and back hike\, with about 1200′ of elevation gain. \nNOTE: Please review the guidelines to participate in our hikes. Park in the large dirt lot\, which is free. \nFrom the 101 Freeway\, turn south on Kanan Rd. Continue 6.2 miles\, then turn right onto Mulholland Hwy. After 0.9 miles\, veer left onto Encinal Canyon Rd. Drive 2.4 miles to the parking area\, on the right. \nFrom the Pacific Coast Highway – From the PCH\, turn up Encinal Canyon Road. Drive 5 miles\, then turn right onto Encinal Cyn Rd. Continue 1.1 miles to the parking area\, on the left. \nDISCLAIMER / RELEASE OF LIABILITY \nThe hike host is a volunteer and not responsible for the group. SUMMARY:Malibu Creek SP - Reagan Ranch to MASH and Forest Trail
DESCRIPTION:This hike includes 2 trails we have not done on previous treks to the MASH site. We will enter MCSP on the Yearling Trail but that is where this hike diverts from the ordinary. We will jump onto the Deer Leg trail to Cage trail which descends to Crags Road. From Crags Road we cross Malibu Creek (bridge) to the Forest Trail. The Forest Trail parallels the south side of Century Lake through a beautiful shaded riparian habitat\, past MCSP’s last remaining Coast Redwood (7 others burned in Woolsey Fire)\, to Century Dam. We then head back to Crags Road and the trail to MASH. But\, before leaving MASH we will explore the Lost Cabin trail which climbs to a view of Kaslow Natural Preserve\, behind Goat Buttes. \nWe will complete our western tour of MCSP by returning to the Yearling Trail via the Cage Trail. This hike clocks in at 6 1/2 miles\, 750′ gain. \nWhen I scouted this route on Saturday\, all of the trails were reasonably cleared of brush but I would not recommend shorts due to some narrow areas of “single track” trail. Also\, there are some rocky spots (trekking poles might be helpful if you normally use them). \nPlease review the guidelines (link to the guidelines) to join our hikes.\nRestrictions apply for your safety and ours: \n\nDon’t show up unless you’re shown on the “Attending” list.\nPLEASE bring plenty of water.\nYour safety is your own personal responsibility\, but the hike leader reserves the right to ask you to leave if you come unprepared.\nNo “Plus Ones” or dogs on Weekday Trailblazer hikes.\n\nDISCLAIMER/RELEASE OF LIABILITY – PLEASE READ IN ITS ENTIRETY\nThe hike host is a volunteer and not responsible for the group. Safety should be a priority for everyone in the group. Please treat this meet-up as hiking with a group of friends. If you become fatigued and unable to continue the hike\, it is expected you will advise the hike host of this and return to our starting point on your own. SUMMARY:Ride the Two Winds (Dos Vientos) - Gentler Friendly Hike
DESCRIPTION:Note 8:30 am start time!\nThis hike will start at 8:30 and we will probably go slower than David’s Malibu Canyon hike. It’s usually a bit cooler in the Dos Vientos area. We will loop around the periphery of Dos Vientos Open Space\, passing Twin Ponds\, overlooking Potrero Road and the Oxnard Plain with the Channel Islands in the background. \nThis hike is about 5.0 miles with 800 feet of elevation gain. \nPace: This is a gentler friendly hike. We will go at a slightly slower pace and we will finish in about 2-2 1/2 hours. Faster hikers are welcome to join us so long as they are willing to hike at the slower pace of the group or wait at the forks on the trail. There are many confusing side trails in Dos Vientos so please plan to stay in contact with the group\, not too fast and not too slow\, plenty of forks to wait for the rest of the group. \nPlease note this trail is very exposed (no shade) and there is no water along the way. \nDIRECTIONS: From the 101 Freeway in Newbury Park\, exit at Borchard Road. Drive 3.4 miles and turn into the Dos Vientos Community Park on the right\, just after Via Ricardo (and before Via Las Brisas). Meet near the tennis courts to the left. \nIf you are coming from the NW\, exit Wendy and turn left on Wendy and then a right on Borchard to Dos Vientos Community Park. \nDISCLAIMER / RELEASE OF LIABILITY\nIMPORTANT\, PLEASE READ BELOW IN ITS ENTIRETY:\nRestrictions apply for your safety and ours:\nDon’t show up unless you’re on the “Attending” list\nUnregistered or waitlisted will be turned away\nNo “Plus Ones” on this hike\nPlan on completing the entire hike or please find an alternative hike that better suits your hiking level.\nNo dogs\nAll participants must be 18 or older\, or accompanied by a parent or legal guardian.\nThe hike host is a volunteer and not responsible for the group. Safety should be a priority for everyone in the group. Please treat this meet-up as hiking with a group of friends. If you become fatigued and unable to continue the hike\, it is expected you will advise the hike host of this and return to our starting point on your own. If you are able to proceed\, it is expected that you will maintain line of sight with other members of the group at all times and help to promote the group’s safety and fitness goals.\nOutdoor sports and other events we plan can be inherently dangerous and accidents may happen. SUMMARY:Malibu Creek SP - Reagan Ranch to MASH (Overflow Hike 8:00 start)
DESCRIPTION:This is the same hike that Dave is leading but 30 minutes earlier. We will enter MCSP on the Yearling. We will divert onto the Deer Leg trail to Cage trail which descends to Crags Road. SUMMARY:Santa Rosa Trail Loop through Box Canyon - Intermediate
DESCRIPTION:Haven’t done this hike in a long time. Wildwood is one of the most versatile local parks there is\, with 27 miles of trails skittering through rocky cliffs\, cacti-filled desert environs\, volcanic rock\, riparian forest\, and a cool\, watery canyon. Wildwood’s archetypal western look served as the set for The Rifleman\, Gunsmoke\, and Wagon Train back in the day\, as well as the movie Spartacus. This hike takes us up the Santa Rosa Trail to Mount Clef Ridge\, providing sweeping views of the park\, the Santa Rosa Valley. \nhttp://photos3.meetupstatic.com/photos/event/9/1/5/2/600_318817202.jpeg \nDescending into the valley\, we’ll pass the famed train yard\, as well as other quirky estates. \nhttp://photos2.meetupstatic.com/photos/event/d/d/e/c/600_99896812.jpeg \nWe will take the Box Canyon Trail and the Mesa Trail back and if there’s time hit Lizard rock before heading back to the parking lot. Our route will be approximately 6 1/2 miles and 1000 +’ of elevation gain. Much of the hike is exposed- dress appropriately\, and make sure you have water or beverage of choice. SUMMARY:Sycamore Canyon Hike from the Ocean - a Gentler Hike
DESCRIPTION:HIKE DETAILS:\nThis will be a little easier hike for Tuesday\, with less elevation gain\, less miles\, and slower. Should you change hikes\, don’t forget to cancel the one you are not going on this Tuesday. \nThis hike will go from the beach up to the picnic table on the fire road\, approximately 5.5 miles. We will then follow the fire road back down to the parking lot\, so out and back. \nDirections: \nWe will be meeting at the Sycamore Canyon Campground and day use parking area on Pacific Coast hwy. This trailhead and parking area is about a mile south from the La Jolla Canyon Parking area where we go to hike the Ray Miller Trail and just across from the campground. \nParking is available in the campground for $12 (or free with a State Parking Permit). There may not be free parking on PCH. \nThere are also restrooms at the day parking lot. \nDISCLAIMER / RELEASE OF LIABILITY \nIMPORTANT\, PLEASE READ BELOW IN ITS ENTIRETY: \nThe hike host is a volunteer and not responsible for the group. SUMMARY:🤞🏻Newton Canyon to Buzzards Roost🌊🌊- 8 Mile Intermediate Hike
DESCRIPTION:This hike will start at 8:00. We will meet in the parking lot on Kanan at Newton Canyon\, we’ll jump on the Backbone Trail for a cruise over and up to the peak of the Zuma Ridge Trail at Buzzard’s Roost. On the ridge\, we’ll have a great view of Zuma Beach and the Pacific. On our way there\, we’ll cross a free-flowing creek (not sure the water is still there)\, pass under a recovering oak canopy (to remind us of the cycles of life). We will hit the fire road. Some of us (anyone who wants to) can stop at the fire road and then head back (about 5 miles). The more intermediate hikers can go on up to Buzzards Roosts for a total of 8 miles. \nThis is an out and back hike at a total of 8 miles\, with 1600′ total elevation gain\, leading to the turnaround point with the ocean view at Buzzards Roost. Plan to stay with the group unless and until you decide to turn around early\, just let someone know what you are doing. There are trees in the canyon but the fire road will be hot\, bring lots of water. \nDirections: \nFrom the 101\, go south (toward beaches) on Kanan Road about 8 miles to just before the third tunnel (T1). The parking lot is on the right. \nFrom Pacific Coast Highway\, go north on Kanan Dume Road about 4 miles and make a left turn into the parking lot immediately after going through the first tunnel. \nPlease review the guidelines to participate in our morning hikes. Here are some highlights and a link to the guidelines:\nhttps://www.meetup.com/The-Weekday-Trailblazers/about/\nRestrictions apply for your safety and ours:\nDon’t show up unless you’re on the “Attending” list\nNo “Plus Ones” on this hike\nNo dogs\nPlan on completing the entire hike at a brisk pace or please find an alternative hike that better suits your hiking level. \nDISCLAIMER / RELEASE OF LIABILITY \nThe hike host is a volunteer and not responsible for the group. SUMMARY:Malibu Creek State Park (MCSP) from Tapia ~ 8:00 start!
DESCRIPTION:We will start this hike into MCSP from Tapia Park. The Tapia Park entrance is just before the Piuma intersection. Note: a day use fee (machine at entrance) is required if you don’t have a State Park Pass. After you enter Tapia\, follow the signs to Salvation Army Camp & Conference Center. It’s about 0.4 mile to the Salvation Army Camp entrance. Park on the right side of the road (lined pull-in parking stalls). \nOur hike starts on the Tapia Spur trail\, which winds through a lovely chaparral “forest” and drops down onto the road by the park’s group campground. We’ll follow the campground road to the main trailhead (Crags/High Road). Crags Road runs along and above Malibu Creek. The water level has dropped enough to allow a dry crossing of the creek to Mott’s Road\, which leads to the Chaparrel trail. The Chaparrel trail climbs up and over the ridge behind the MCSP Visitor’s Center. From there we’ll cross the “big” bridge to Crags Road which will take us to the shaded east end of Century Lake. Next we will use the Cage trail to access the Overlook trail loop with panoramic views of MCSP’s “central valley”. We’ll return to the Tapia Spur trail along the shaded northern side of Malibu Creek. \nThis out-and-back hike clocks in at around 6.5 miles\, with an elevation gain/loss of about 950‘. I have timed this hike at 3 hours to allow a leisurely pace in anticipation of warmer weather. \nDirections: From the 101 Freeway take Las Virgenes Rd.\, south for 4.8 miles to the Tapia Park entrance (south of main MCSP entrance). Your personal safety depends on your own judgment and experience.

SUMMARY:Ride the Two Winds (Dos Vientos) - Gentler Friendly Hike (Not a Beginner's Hike)
DESCRIPTION:Note 8:00 am start time! Beat the heat with an earlier start! \nThis hike will loop around the periphery of Dos Vientos Open Space\, going behind Twin Ponds\, overlooking Potrero Road and the Oxnard Plain with the Channel Islands in the background. We will cross 3 streets along the way. \nThis hike is about 6.0 miles with 1\,000 feet of elevation gain. \nPace: This is a gentler friendly hike. We will go at a slightly slower pace than the Intermediate Trailblazer Hikes and we will finish in about 2-2 1/2 hours\, but this is not a beginner hike. Faster hikers are welcome to join us so long as they are willing to hike at the slower pace of the group or wait at the forks on the trail. There are many confusing side trails in Dos Vientos so I ask that everyone plan to stay in contact with the group\, not too fast and not too slow!
