SUMMARY:Gentler / Beginner: Kanan Dume to Latigo - 5 miles
DESCRIPTION:This is an easier hike for Tuesday\, another has also been posted close by\, please only sign up for one hike. This hike is 5 miles and will take us on a less-traveled but quite beautiful part of the 67-mile Backbone Trail\, which runs through the Santa Monica Mountains National Recreation Area from Will Rogers State Park in the east to Point Mugu in the west. \nThe route begins at Kanan Dume Road and goes southerly a short distance\, allowing us to cross over the southernmost tunnel (Tunnel 1) above Kanan Dume Road. We then proceed easterly roughly 2.2 miles and up 600 feet\, gradually winding our way up and through Latigo Canyon\, turning around at Latigo Canyon Road\, and returning to the cars. This hike can include a short jog up to the ridgeline for spectacular Pacific Ocean views. There will probably still be some wildflowers along this route. \nThis hike has a short but steep climb at the beginning\, where we will help and encourage beginning hikers (who still should be prepared for a 150′ climb). Poles would be a good idea when returning. \nThe terrain is a mix of single and double-file trail with occasional stretches of loose rock and gravel (you may want to bring trekking poles). The majority of our out and back hike is wooded and shaded canyon trails\, offering periodic glimpses of the Pacific. A deep “V” into a shaded cleft\, with another 450′ of descent and climb will complete the elevation loss and gain. \nThe total distance for this hike will be approximately 5 miles with 600 feet of elevation gain. \nDirections: \nFrom the 101 – exit at the Kanan Road exit and drive south (toward the ocean) 7.8 miles\, going through two of the three tunnels on this road (which changes name to Kanan Dume Road). Turn right into the “Backbone Trail” parking area\, just before entering the third tunnel. \nFrom PCH – turn up South Kanan Dume Road. Drive 4.4 miles from PCH\, going through one tunnel\, and then turn left into the “Backbone Trail” parking area\, almost immediately after coming out of the tunnel. Free parking is available at the trailhead. \nDisclaimer / Release of Liability\nIMPORTANT\, PLEASE READ BELOW IN ITS ENTIRETY: \nThe hike host is a volunteer and not responsible for the group. Safety should be a priority for everyone in the group. Please treat this meet-up as hiking with a group of friends. If you become fatigued and unable to continue the hike\, it is expected you will advise the hike host of this and return to our starting point on your own. If you are able to proceed\, it is expected that you will maintain line of sight with other members of the group at all times and help to promote the group’s safety and fitness goals. \nOutdoor sports and other events we plan can be inherently dangerous and accidents may happen. By participating in any posted event\, you are taking responsibility for your own safety and well-being. The Weekday Trailblazers Meetup Group and its organizers are not trained leaders and we do not confirm the qualifications of any of its members to lead or participate in trips. All participants take full responsibility for their own actions. \nIf you choose to sign up for this or any Weekday Trailblazers Meetup event\, you are releasing the Weekday Trailblazers Meetup Group and its organizers from all liability in case of possible injuries. Your personal safety depends on your own judgment and experience. \nAll participants must be 18 or older\, or accompanied by a parent or legal guardian. No dogs.

SUMMARY:Encinal Canyon to Top of the World ~ Intermediate Hike
DESCRIPTION:Encinal Canyon is named for encina\, the Spanish word for the holm oak\, a lovely Mediterranean tree with holly characteristics. Holm oaks are one of the main trees used to establish truffle orchards\, but we’ll be nosing around the canyon strictly for its beauty. \nThe trail from Encinal is a smooth\, firm\, and well-traveled single track\, swooping and winding with a constant\, gentle slope. We’ll have fabulous views of the coast for much of the way. Close to the top\, we’ll take on the slightly steeper Etz Meloy Motorway\, then the last tenth of a mile is up a seldom-used trail to the isolated peak\, where we’ll both lose and catch our breath with a 360-degree view. \nFrom our perch above it all we’ll see Sandstone Peak to the west\, Simi Valley to the north\, Ladyface and Mt Baldy to the east and the Channel Islands to the south and west. \nThis is an 8 mile out and back hike\, with about 1200′ of elevation gain. \nNOTE: Please review the guidelines to participate in our hikes. Here are some highlights and a link to the guidelines:\nhttps://www.meetup.com/The-Weekday-Trailblazers/about/\nRestrictions apply for your safety and ours:\nDon’t show up unless you’re on the “Attending” list\nNo “Plus Ones” on this hike\nPlan on completing the entire hike at an intermediate pace or please find an alternative hike that better suits your hiking level.\nNo dogs allowed. \nDirections: \nThe parking area is off the north side of Encinal Canyon Road\, almost directly across the street from the Camp 13 fire station & Rattle Snake Road. Park in the large dirt lot\, which is free. \nFrom the 101 Freeway\, turn south on Kanan Rd. Continue 6.2 miles\, then turn right onto Mulholland Hwy. After 0.9 miles\, veer left onto Encinal Canyon Rd. Drive 2.4 miles to the parking area\, on the right. \nFrom the Pacific Coast Highway – From the PCH\, turn up Encinal Canyon Road. Drive 5 miles\, then turn right onto Encinal Cyn Rd. Continue 1.1 miles to the parking area\, on the left. \nDISCLAIMER / RELEASE OF LIABILITY \nThe hike host is a volunteer and not responsible for the group. Safety should be a priority for everyone in the group. Please treat this meet-up as hiking with a group of friends. SUMMARY:Santa Rosa Valley to Hill & Hawk Canyons - Gentler 5.5 mile 700'
DESCRIPTION:This route is pretty dry. If we get a deluge\, I may consider cancelling\, but otherwise it’s a go! \nThis loop / lollipop hike starts at the parking area in Hill Canyon. We’ll cross the bridge over the creek\, and meander a mile before turning onto the Hawk Canyon Trail\, through the notch alongside the creek\, to the Edison Road\, up the hill to the Peninsula Trail\, around Canyon View\, past Volcanics and Elliott Peak trail\, back down to the creek\, and back out to the cars. We will take a few breaks along the way to wait for everyone to catch up. Here’s the GaiaGPS details. \nWe’ll see lots of brown hills and meadows. On Sunday\, when I pre-hiked this route\, there were actually a few wildflowers left in bloom amidst the tumbleweeds. This will be a good opportunity to establish a “before” picture in your mind\, in hopes of a beautiful “after” the coming rains. \nI generally spray my hat and legs with bug repellent on this hike – YMMV. Also\, we may hike over a wet spot on the trail along the creek. \n5.5 miles\, 700′ elevation. Optional Brunch / Lunch after at Old New York Bagel & Deli in Camarillo \nDirections: \nFrom Moorpark Road in the Santa Rosa Valley\, drive west on Santa Rosa Road for 3.7 miles\, turn left (south) on Hill Canyon Road for about 0.6 miles to the parking lot. \nFrom the 101 Freeway in Camarillo\, take exit 52 onto Santa Rosa Road and drive northeast. After 5 miles\, turn right onto Hill Canyon Road for about 0.6 miles to the parking lot. \nPlease review the guidelines (link to the guidelines) to join our hikes.\nRestrictions apply for your safety and ours: \n\nPlease do not show up unless you’re shown on the “Attending” list.\nNo dogs.\nNo “Plus Ones” Weekday Trailblazer hikes.\nAll participants must be 18 or older\, or accompanied by a parent or legal guardian.\n\nDISCLAIMER/RELEASE OF LIABILITY – PLEASE READ IN ITS ENTIRETY\nThe hike host is a volunteer and not responsible for the group. SUMMARY:Rancho Sierra Vista\, Peace\, Love\, and Joy
DESCRIPTION:This is an alternative (and probably slower) hike than Steve Johnson posted for Thursday. We will start in the parking lot of SMMNRA and can go up to the monument if it is dry\, but if it has rained\, we can just go down the asphalt to the picnic tables. If it is raining\, however\, I will cancel. We will take this hike at a gentler pace and we will take some breaks to let slower hikers catch up. It is an out and back\, however\, and you can go at your own pace. \nWe will start in the parking lot at Rancho Sierra Vista and head up to the monument.\nThis out and back hike is about 6 miles with 1100 feet of elevation gain. The hike will start in SMMNRA. Dogs are not permitted in State Park wilderness areas. \nPlease bring ample hydration. There is poison oak at the Monument; if you don’t know what it looks like\, stay on the paths and don’t stray into the woods. \nNote: We will meet at the Rancho Sierra Vista paved parking lot. Meet near the bathrooms. Do NOT leave anything of value in your car\, at this or any other trailhead. \nDISCLAIMER / RELEASE OF LIABILITY \nThe hike host is a volunteer and not responsible for the group. Safety should be a priority for everyone in the group. Please treat this meet-up as hiking with a group of friends. SUMMARY:Pre-turkey trot~Intermediate 8 mile hike~RayMiller Trail and Overlook Trail
DESCRIPTION:Join us on a pre-turkey trot up the Ray Miller Trail and the Overlook Trail. We’ll turn back around the Guadalasca Trail intersection. We’ll enjoy beautiful ocean views as we descend. We’ll pick up about 1500’ gain on this 8 mile adventure. \nLying along the brilliant blue Pacific Ocean at the west end of Malibu (just shy of Port Hueneme)\, the swelling blue ocean is rivaled in beauty by the undulating native California grasslands. On a clear day\, the Channel Islands are easily within sight. Most of the trail is exposed\, so sunscreen is highly recommended and plenty of water. Mosquito season should be over so it’s up to you whether you should bring bug repellent. \nWe’ll meet in the parking lot near the Ray Miller Trailhead (look for the brilliant yellow sign). There is a parking fee in the lot (or free with state parking pass). There is free parking on PCH just a short walk to the parking area. \nhttps://a248.e.akamai.net/secure.meetupstatic.com/photos/event/6/7/4/a/event_93326442.jpeg \nPlease review the ongoing guidelines to participate in our morning hikes. SUMMARY:Ray Miller Trail in La Jolla Canyon ~ Gentler Intermediate
DESCRIPTION:The Ray Miller Trail is an awesome blend of ocean and mountain views in Malibu’s La Jolla Canyon. We will start from the trailhead which follows the canyon eastward\, away from the ocean. Then\, it quickly brings you back toward the ocean at a gradual incline. There’s a great lookout spot where it gives you a breathtaking view of the Pacific Coast Highway against the backdrop of the Pacific Ocean\, with sweeping views toward Mugu Rock on the west and Sycamore Cove on the east. After another peak\, you’ll start a slight decline that brings you to the fire road where we will turn around. Along the way\, we’ll be treated to magnificent sweeping views of La Jolla and Big Sycamore Canyons\, and of course\, the largest ocean in the world. On a clear day\, the Channel Islands are easily within sight.\nThis is a 5-6 mile out and back hike with an elevation gain/loss of about 1100’. \nDirections: \nFrom Los Angeles\, take the Pacific Coast Highway (PCH) north\, 22 miles from Malibu Canyon Rd. Across the street from Thornhill Broome Beach is the entrance to La Jolla Canyon. It is very clearly marked. Turn right. \nFrom Ventura\, take PCH eastward\, and turn left 4 miles after Las Posas Road. \nHeads up: There is a parking fee in the lot (or free with state parking pass). Our route is principally on the Albertson Fire Road\, which goes from the trailhead eastward all the way to Upper Las Virgenes Canyon\, and is a favorite route for hikers and mountain bikers alike. We’ll turn off this hilly fire road after about three miles and head south for about one mile\, on a single track trail\, across China Flats and then up to the commanding views of 2400-foot Simi Peak. \nThe Albertson Fire Road is an especially scenic route in both directions\, rising up above the Simi and Conejo Valleys and offering westward views of the Pacific and offshore islands. China Flats was the site of Back to the Future 3’s wild west scenes. At Simi Peak\, we will enjoy breath-taking views of the Simi Valley\, Conejo Valley\, San Fernando Valley\, Oxnard Plains\, Pacific Ocean\, and the Channel Islands. \nThis hike is exposed almost the entire way\, and the sun has a way of sneaking up on you even on a temperate day. Bring plenty of water and portable shade. \nFree on-street parking is available at the trailhead. \nDirections:\nTake the 101 toward Thousand Oaks. Exit at Westlake Boulevard and turn north (away from the ocean). Drive 4.1 miles and turn right on Lang Ranch Parkway. DESCRIPTION:Let’s head out to the famed Peace\, Love\, Joy arch at the Danielson. This out and back hike wanders through grasslands and chaparral from the Wendy trailhead\, then climbs up Boney Mountain Trail for some fantastic views north to Port Hueneme and Oxnard and west toward the Pacific Ocean. SUMMARY:Wildwood Central Park (Fast Paced - over 3+ mph)
DESCRIPTION:Please bring a headlamp or flashlight. \nWildwood Park in Thousand Oaks is one of the most versatile local parks there is\, with 27 miles of trails skittering through rocky cliffs\, cacti-filled desert environs\, volcanic rock\, riparian forest\, and a cool\, watery canyon. Highlights of the hike include waterfalls incorporating 40’ Paradise waterfalls along with a long creek\, Indian caves\, volcanic rock cliffs\, and wildflowers throughout. Wildwood’s archetypal western look served as the set for The Rifleman\, Gunsmoke\, and Wagon Train back in the day\, as well as the movie Spartacus. \nIt will start at the trailhead that has steps down to the Moonridge Trail. We’ll take the trail down by the teepee to Wildwood Canyon Trail\, pass by Paradise Falls\, pick up Lizard Rock Trail\, and go by a water treatment plant on our way to Lizard Rock. We’ll take Stagecoach Bluff Trail for some more elevation\, and either catch Mesa Trail or Moonridge Trail back to the parking lot. We’ll pass through various trails with bridges\, crossing streams\, and have some tree canopies for approximately 5 miles with about a 1200’ elevation gain/loss. We will take a break somewhere in our travels. \nDirections: \nFrom the 101 in Thousand Oaks\, turn north on Lynn Road and continue 2.6 miles to Avenida De Los Arboles\, then turn left. Continue for about a mile to the end and turn into the Wildwood parking lot on the left. \nFrom the 118\, travel west to the 23\, exit at Avenida De Los Arboles and turn right. Drive further than you remember having to drive to this trailhead (10 or 15 minutes). Turn left into the parking lot when the road ends. \nPLEASE READ BELOW IN ITS ENTIRETY \nPlease review the guidelines (link to the guidelines) to join our hikes.\nRestrictions apply for your safety and ours: \n\nDon’t show up unless you’re shown on the “Attending” list.\nPlan on KEEPING UP with the group and completing the entire hike or please find an alternative hike that better suits your hiking level.\nYour safety is your own personal responsibility\, but the hike leader reserves the right to ask you to leave if you come unprepared.\nNo “Plus Ones” or dogs on Weekday Trailblazer hikes.\n\nDISCLAIMER / RELEASE OF LIABILITY \nThe hike host is a volunteer and not responsible for the group. Safety should be a priority for everyone in the group. Please treat this meet-up as hiking with a group of friends. If you become fatigued and unable to continue the hike\, it is expected you will advise the hike host of this and return to our starting point on your own. SUMMARY:The Heart of Topanga State Park - Eagle Rock and Musch Loops
DESCRIPTION:In just under 7 miles\, this “super-duper-double-looper” will explore the heart of Topanga State Park (TSP) and touch all of TSP’s major trailheads. Starting at Trippet Ranch\, we will head up TSP’s Nature Trail which crosses Eagle Springs Fire Road near the junction of the East Topanga Fire Road (jumping off point to Parker Mesa). The Nature Trail skirts Santa Ynez canyon with peek-a-boo views of Santa Monica Bay before passing the Santa Ynez Canyon (“Waterfall”) trailhead on the way back to the Eagle Springs Fire Road. We will continue up the fire road past Eagle Junction to Hub Junction\, the highest point of the hike at 2000′. \nHub Junction marks the start of the second half of our TSP tour. We will head west and rollercoaster along the ridge\, past the Garapito trailhead\, to Eagle Rock. After a brief photo stop at Eagle Rock we continue down to Eagle Junction where we pick up the Musch Trail and our final leg of the double loop. Despite the lack of flowers at this time of the year\, Musch promises to be the highlight of this hike. We will transition in and out of chaparral\, oak woodland\, riparian woodland and grassland meadows. The last trailhead we will cross\, before making it back to the parking lot\, is the infamous Dead Horse Trail. So\, by my count\, our 7 mile\, 1200′ adventure will take us on or across 8 trails/trailheads. A super-duper-looper indeed! \nDirections: \nFrom the 101\, exit at Topanga Canyon Boulevard (CA 27)\, drive south over the crest of the mountains and proceed three miles to Entrada Road (not Entrado!) and turn left. Keep to the left at every opportunity until you reach the park’s main parking lot (about one mile) \nFrom the Pacific Coast Highway\, travel north on Topanga Canyon Boulevard\, pass the post office at the center of “town\,” then turn right on Entrada Road. Keep to the left at every opportunity until you reach the park’s main parking lot (about one mile). \nParking is $10.00/$9.00 for seniors (exact change\, although I think they take cc) in Park. There is some street parking (free) outside of the park on the road. \nDISCLAIMER / RELEASE OF LIABILITY\nIMPORTANT\, PLEASE READ BELOW IN ITS ENTIRETY:\nThe hike host is a volunteer and not responsible for the group. Safety should be a priority for everyone in the group. Please treat this meet-up as hiking with a group of friends. If you become fatigued and unable to continue the hike\, it is expected you will advise the hike host of this and return to our starting point on your own. SUMMARY:Ray Miller Trail in La Jolla Canyon ~ Gentler Intermediate
DESCRIPTION:Let’s try Ray Miller Trail after last week’s rain. The trail is an awesome blend of ocean and mountain views in Malibu’s La Jolla Canyon. On a clear day\, the Channel Islands are easily within sight.\nThis is a 5-6 mile out and back hike with an elevation gain/loss of about 1000’. There is free parking on PCH just a short walk to the trailhead. \nPlease review the guidelines (guidelines) to join our hikes.\nRestrictions apply for your safety and ours: \n\nDon’t show up unless you’re shown on the “Attending” list.\nPlan on KEEPING UP with the group and completing the entire hike at a moderate pace\, or please find an alternative hike that better suits your hiking level.\nNo “Plus Ones” or dogs on Weekday Trailblazer hikes.\n\nDISCLAIMER/RELEASE OF LIABILITY – PLEASE READ IN ITS ENTIRETY \nThe hike host is a volunteer and not responsible for the group.
