SUMMARY:Saturday Extra - Oakbrook Vista and Sandstone Hills Trail
DESCRIPTION:This gentler intermediate hike allows us a chance to get in a hike before our weekend events kick in.\nThis is an out-and-back 5.7 mile hike with a gain/loss of +/-1200’. It provides a great overview of the Thousand Oaks area\, the ocean and the western Santa Monica Mountains. We’ll take the narrow trail that zigzags its way up and then take the trail to the power pole at the top. You’ll be enjoying 360 degree views toward Simi Peak\, Lang Ranch and Woodridge trails. \nDirections: \nFrom 101: Exit at Westlake Boulevard and turn north (away from the ocean). Drive 4.2 miles to Lang Ranch Parkway\, then turn right. SUMMARY:Dos Vientos -- Ride the Two Winds\, a Gentler Friendly Hike.
DESCRIPTION:Please note this hike begins at 8:30 am! We will meet under the solar panels and NOT by the tennis courts. \nRestrictions apply for your safety and ours: \n\nDon’t show up unless you’re on the “Attending” list\nUnregistered or waitlisted will be turned away\nNo “Plus Ones” on this hike\n\nThis hike will loop around the periphery of Dos Vientos\, passing Twin Ponds\, overlooking Potrero Road and the Oxnard Plain with the Channel Islands in the background. We will cross 2 streets along the way. \nThis hike is about 5.0 miles with 800 feet of elevation gain. \nPace: This is a gentler friendly hike. We will go at a slightly slower pace than the Intermediate Trailblazer Hike\, and we will finish in 2 1/2 hours. Faster hikers are welcome to join us so long as they are willing to hike at the slower pace of the group or wait at the forks on the trail. There are many confusing side trails in Dos Vientos so I will mark the trail if necessary\, but I ask that everyone plan to stay in contact with the group. \nPlease note this trail is very exposed (no shade) and there is no water along the way. \nDIRECTIONS: From the 101 Freeway in Newbury Park\, exit at Borchard Road. SUMMARY:Newton Canyon to Trancas Canyon
DESCRIPTION:From the Kanan Rd trailhead\, we’ll jump on the Backbone Trail headed west\, crossing over Zuma Ridge Motorway toward Trancas Canyon. On our way there\, we’ll cross a stream (haha)\, pass under an oak canopy (a little\, anyway)\, and come out into an opening. At the opening\, look toward the sandstone formations in the distance\, and you’ll see Upper Newton Falls spilling (ah\, those were the days) through them like a ribbon. \nThis is an out and back hike for a total of 8 miles\, with 1475′ total elevation gain. A little shade\, a lot of sun\, all single track – prepare accordingly. \nDirections: \nFrom the 101\, go south (toward beaches) on Kanan Road about 8 miles to just before the third tunnel (T1). SUMMARY:Rosewood Trail: Lynn to Angel Vista - Gentler Intermediate
DESCRIPTION:Meet at the Rosewood sign\, which is on the Regal Oak Ct. and Lynn Rd. intersection. The hike is about 5 miles with an elevation gain/loss approximately 900’. \nWe’ll walk a short distance on Lynn road to the lower Rosewood Trail\, then take the dirt trail up a shaded ravine and continue on the Rosewood trail to the Angel Vista peak. \nRosewood trail presents a clear view over the 101 Freeway carving up the Conejo Valley. This is a preview of the panorama to come at Angel Vista\, and the view grows larger as you hike higher up the mountain. DESCRIPTION:Let’s reacquaint ourselves with the spectacular rock formations and beautiful scenery in Red Rock Canyon\, between Topanga and Calabasas. This hike is 5.25 miles and 1\,000′ total feet of gain\, loss\, gain\, loss\, gain\, and loss :-). [See the photos for more scenery]; A map of our route is in the Photos and on GaiaGPS. \nThe main route is on a fire road\, but we will take a side trail to a rock formation (above) at the top of a trail with somewhat loose rock\, so be sure the tread on your shoes is in good shape. Trekking poles may be helpful. \nDIRECTIONS\nExit 101 onto Las Virgenes\, and drive south to Mulholland. Turn left on Mulholland and pass the headquarters of the Santa Monica Mountains National Recreation Area at King Gillette Ranch\, and continue until the (somewhat obscure) right hand turn onto Stunt Road. SUMMARY:Gentler Friendly ~ Oak Creek Canyon\, Los Robles East In/Out
DESCRIPTION:This is meeting in the same area (Los Robles Open Space) as Laurie’s longer hike\, but in a different parking area (the end of Greeenmeadow Avenue). This hike is much shorter (5 miles) and slower\, for those of you who want a more leisurely pace. \nOak Creek Canyon Trail is a rather special trail in Los Robles Open Space that is designed for the blind as well as the sighted and is shaded by a canopy of oaks. \nWe will start at Oak Creek Canyon and proceed to a connector trail a short distance until we meet a junction with Los Robles Trail East. Along this trail\, you’ll travel through a couple of very nice oak groves\, and get some great views throughout the Los Robles Trail East. We will turn around when we hit 2 1/2 miles. \nThis hike will be a five-mile In/Out with about a 900’ elevation gain/loss. \nDirection: From the 101 freeway\, Exit Moorpark and drive to the south end of Moorpark Rd\, turn right on Greenmeadow Ave.\, and go about a quarter mile to the parking lot. Maybe it’s the final frontier. SUMMARY:Rosewood Trail: Lynn to Angel Vista - Gentler Intermediate
DESCRIPTION:Meet at the Rosewood sign\, which is on the Regal Oak Ct. and Lynn Rd. intersection. The hike is about 5 miles with an elevation gain/loss approximately 900’. \nWe’ll walk a short distance on Lynn road to the lower Rosewood Trail\, then take the dirt trail up a shaded ravine and continue on the Rosewood trail to the Angel Vista peak. \nRosewood trail presents a clear view over the 101 Freeway carving up the Conejo Valley. This is a preview of the panorama to come at Angel Vista\, and the view grows larger as you hike higher up the mountain. Echoing its not-so-distant past of ranching\, the rolling hills and shady canyons are popular with equestrians. Before the ranchers\, Chumash Indians and grizzly bears tromped out the slender trails in the native grasses that became today’s open fire roads. Rabbits\, bobcats\, owls\, hawks\, deer\, and coyotes still call the sycamores\, oaks\, streams\, and sulfur springs of the canyons home. SUMMARY:Hill Canyon Santa Rosa Regional Park
DESCRIPTION:This is the slower hike for Tuesday\, there will be a faster hike posted as well. This hike is in Camarillo at Hill Canyon in Santa Rosa Regional Park. We will start at the parking area in Hill Canyon\, cross the bridge over the runoff creek\, and stroll a mile before turning onto the fire road up the Western Plateau. We will go straight at the crest of the fire road and then turn on the Plateau Rim loop and then return down the Hawk Canyon Trail. The Hawk Canyon Trail connects to Western Plateau Trail back to the parking lot. We will take a few breaks along the way to wait for everyone to catch up. This is approximately 6 miles with an elevation gain of approximately 1000 feet. Last time I was there the trail was a bit overgrown so wear long pants and check for ticks after the hike. \nDirections: \nFrom Moorpark Road in the Santa Rosa Valley\, drive west on Santa Rosa Road for 3.7 miles\, turn left (south) on Hill Canyon Road for about 0.6 miles to the parking lot. \nFrom the 101 Freeway in Camarillo\, take exit 52 onto Santa Rosa Road and drive northeast. SUMMARY:Rosewood Trail: Lynn to Angel Vista - Gentler Intermediate
DESCRIPTION:Meet at the Rosewood sign\, which is on the Regal Oak Ct. and Lynn Rd. intersection. The hike is about 5 miles with an elevation gain/loss approximately 900’. \nWe’ll walk a short distance on Lynn road to the lower Rosewood Trail\, then take the dirt trail up a shaded ravine and continue on the Rosewood trail to the Angel Vista peak. \nRosewood trail presents a clear view over the 101 Freeway carving up the Conejo Valley. This is a preview of the panorama to come at Angel Vista\, and the view grows larger as you hike higher up the mountain. SUMMARY:Wildwood Central Park (Fast Paced)
DESCRIPTION:With the limited daylight we will do this shorter hike. \nWildwood Park in Thousand Oaks is one of the most versatile local parks there is\, with 27 miles of trails skittering through rocky cliffs\, cacti-filled desert environs\, volcanic rock\, riparian forest\, and a cool\, watery canyon. Highlights of the hike include waterfalls incorporating 40’ Paradise waterfalls along with a long creek\, Indian caves\, volcanic rock cliffs\, and wildflowers throughout. Wildwood’s archetypal western look served as the set for The Rifleman\, Gunsmoke\, and Wagon Train back in the day\, as well as the movie Spartacus. \nIt will start at the trailhead that has steps down to the Moonridge Trail. We’ll take the trail down by the teepee to Wildwood Canyon Trail\, pass by Paradise Falls\, pick up Lizard Rock Trail\, and go by a water treatment plant on our way to Lizard Rock. We’ll take Stagecoach Bluff Trail for some more elevation\, and either catch Mesa Trail or Moonridge Trail back to the parking lot. We’ll pass through various trails with bridges\, crossing streams\, and have some tree canopies for approximately 5+ miles with about a 1200’ elevation gain/loss. We will take a break somewhere in our travels. \nDirections: \nFrom the 101 in Thousand Oaks\, turn north on Lynn Road and continue 2.6 miles to Avenida De Los Arboles\, then turn left. Continue for about a mile to the end and turn into the Wildwood parking lot on the left. \nFrom the 118\, travel west to the 23\, exit at Avenida De Los Arboles and turn right. Drive further than you remember having to drive to this trailhead (10 or 15 minutes). SUMMARY:Western Plateau Mt. Elliott - Gentler Friendly - 8:30 Start
DESCRIPTION:Meet at the Conejo Canyons trailhead next to the Thousand Oaks Recycling Center on Conejo Center Drive\, near the end of Rancho Conejo. We’ll walk across Rancho Conejo and take the fire road down to new bridge construction site and then we will go to Five Points. From Five Points\, we will take the Western Plateau trail up to intersection with the Outlaw Loop trail. We will take the Outlaw Loop trail to Mt Elliott and then we will take a single track trail back to the Western Plateau trail and then back to the parking lot. Note: We are not going up to the transmitter tower on this hike! \nOn this hike\, you’ll see the Conejo Airfield (honest!)\, Mt. Rex’s backside\, at least two wrecked cars\, lots of fennel\, and maybe a rattlesnake and a tarantula or two. Plus\, impressive views of the Santa Susannah Mountains (if it’s clear)\, two or three rocky canyons\, and the new biotech developments nearby. \nThe total distance of this loop hike is a smidge under 6 miles. SUMMARY:Zuma Canyon: Ocean and Canyon View trail Loop ~ Gentler Intermediate
DESCRIPTION:This is an alternative hike to Peter’s hike on Thursday. It’s a bit far on PCH\, but we will meet at 9:00 AM. \nThe name “Zuma” is derived from the Chumash language and means “abundance.” There is an absolute abundance of beautiful and spectacular wildflowers engulfing the entire area and it appears that there was no impact from the Woolsey fire other than a few remnants of burnt trees. \nWe will start to hike the Zuma Loop trail and continue on to Ocean View trail. Then\, we descend down the Canyon View trail into Zuma Canyon for a bit. We will come back out of the Canyon and take a small loop around the opposite side. \nThis hike is five miles with an elevation gain/loss of approximately 800’. \nDirections:\nFrom Santa Monica\, Thousand Oaks\, and the San Fernando Valley\, drive west on Pacific Coast Highway somewhat less than a mile west of Kanan\, and turn right (north) on Bonsall Drive. Continue north into the dirt lot at the end\, where the parking is free. \nFrom Oxnard and points north and west\, you will turn left on Bonsall to the end. If you get to Kanan\, you’ve gone too far! The turn is just past the Zuma Beach parking lot. It might be easier to turn left at Busch Dr. (with the Italian restaurant on the corner) and then turn right on Rainsford Pl. and then left onto Bonsall to the end. SUMMARY:Gentler / Beginner: Kanan Dume to Latigo - 5 miles
DESCRIPTION:This is an easier hike for Tuesday\, another has also been posted close by\, please only sign up for one hike. This hike is 5 miles and will take us on a less-traveled but quite beautiful part of the 67-mile Backbone Trail\, which runs through the Santa Monica Mountains National Recreation Area from Will Rogers State Park in the east to Point Mugu in the west. \nThe route begins at Kanan Dume Road and goes southerly a short distance\, allowing us to cross over the southernmost tunnel (Tunnel 1) above Kanan Dume Road. We then proceed easterly roughly 2.2 miles and up 600 feet\, gradually winding our way up and through Latigo Canyon\, turning around at Latigo Canyon Road\, and returning to the cars. This hike can include a short jog up to the ridgeline for spectacular Pacific Ocean views. There will probably still be some wildflowers along this route. \nThis hike has a short but steep climb at the beginning\, where we will help and encourage beginning hikers (who still should be prepared for a 150′ climb). Poles would be a good idea when returning. \nThe terrain is a mix of single and double-file trail with occasional stretches of loose rock and gravel (you may want to bring trekking poles). The majority of our out and back hike is wooded and shaded canyon trails\, offering periodic glimpses of the Pacific. SUMMARY:Encinal Canyon to Top of the World ~ Intermediate Hike
DESCRIPTION:Encinal Canyon is named for encina\, the Spanish word for the holm oak\, a lovely Mediterranean tree with holly characteristics. Holm oaks are one of the main trees used to establish truffle orchards\, but we’ll be nosing around the canyon strictly for its beauty. \nThe trail from Encinal is a smooth\, firm\, and well-traveled single track\, swooping and winding with a constant\, gentle slope. We’ll have fabulous views of the coast for much of the way. Close to the top\, we’ll take on the slightly steeper Etz Meloy Motorway\, then the last tenth of a mile is up a seldom-used trail to the isolated peak\, where we’ll both lose and catch our breath with a 360-degree view. \nFrom our perch above it all we’ll see Sandstone Peak to the west\, Simi Valley to the north\, Ladyface and Mt Baldy to the east and the Channel Islands to the south and west. \nThis is an 8 mile out and back hike\, with about 1200′ of elevation gain. \nNOTE: Please review the guidelines to participate in our hikes. SUMMARY:Santa Rosa Valley to Hill & Hawk Canyons - Gentler 5.5 mile 700'
DESCRIPTION:This route is pretty dry. If we get a deluge\, I may consider cancelling\, but otherwise it’s a go! \nThis loop / lollipop hike starts at the parking area in Hill Canyon. We’ll cross the bridge over the creek\, and meander a mile before turning onto the Hawk Canyon Trail\, through the notch alongside the creek\, to the Edison Road\, up the hill to the Peninsula Trail\, around Canyon View\, past Volcanics and Elliott Peak trail\, back down to the creek\, and back out to the cars. We will take a few breaks along the way to wait for everyone to catch up. Here’s the GaiaGPS details. \nWe’ll see lots of brown hills and meadows. On Sunday\, when I pre-hiked this route\, there were actually a few wildflowers left in bloom amidst the tumbleweeds. This will be a good opportunity to establish a “before” picture in your mind\, in hopes of a beautiful “after” the coming rains. \nI generally spray my hat and legs with bug repellent on this hike – YMMV. Also\, we may hike over a wet spot on the trail along the creek. \n5.5 miles\, 700′ elevation. We will start in the parking lot of SMMNRA and can go up to the monument if it is dry\, but if it has rained\, we can just go down the asphalt to the picnic tables. If it is raining\, however\, I will cancel. We will take this hike at a gentler pace and we will take some breaks to let slower hikers catch up. DESCRIPTION:Come and join your COSCA and COSF friends to fix up some of Conejo Valley’s most popular trails in Wildwood Park! \nThe work will be on the Stagecoach Bluff Trail in Wildwood Regional Park\, fixing ruts. Monthly work days are organized by the Conejo Open Space Conservation Agency (COSCA)\, with support from COSF. \nMeet at the main Wildwood Parking area at the corner of Avenida De Los Arboles and Big Sky Drive. You should arrive a few minutes early to take care of registration details. \nIn order to participate\, you will need to sign up online. The work will be done under the guidance of COSCA rangers. \nAs always\, prepare and dress appropriately for trail work. \n\nWear solid boots with good lug soles to keep your grip on a possibly slippery trail. Absolutely no sandals or flip-flops!\nBring lots of water! It can be hot and there may not be any shade\nBring a hat\, work gloves and sunglasses or other eye protection\nLong-sleeved shirts and long pants are strongly recommended\nUse sunblock on exposed skin\nLeave your 4-legged friends at home\n\nNo experience is necessary. DESCRIPTION:Join us on a pre-turkey trot up the Ray Miller Trail and the Overlook Trail. We’ll turn back around the Guadalasca Trail intersection. We’ll enjoy beautiful ocean views as we descend. We’ll pick up about 1500’ gain on this 8 mile adventure. \nLying along the brilliant blue Pacific Ocean at the west end of Malibu (just shy of Port Hueneme)\, the swelling blue ocean is rivaled in beauty by the undulating native California grasslands. On a clear day\, the Channel Islands are easily within sight. Most of the trail is exposed\, so sunscreen is highly recommended and plenty of water. SUMMARY:Rosewood Trail: Lynn to Angel Vista - Gentler Intermediate
DESCRIPTION:Meet at the Rosewood sign\, which is on the Regal Oak Ct. and Lynn Rd. intersection. The hike is about 5 miles with an elevation gain/loss approximately 900’. \nWe’ll walk a short distance on Lynn road to the lower Rosewood Trail\, then take the dirt trail up a shaded ravine and continue on the Rosewood trail to the Angel Vista peak. \nRosewood trail presents a clear view over the 101 Freeway carving up the Conejo Valley. This is a preview of the panorama to come at Angel Vista\, and the view grows larger as you hike higher up the mountain. SUMMARY:Post-Thanksgiving hike: Wildwood Central Park ~ Gentler Intermediate
DESCRIPTION:Wildwood Park in Thousand Oaks is one of the most versatile local parks there is\, with 27 miles of trails skittering through rocky cliffs\, cacti-filled desert environs\, volcanic rock\, riparian forest\, and a cool\, watery canyon. Highlights of the hike include waterfalls incorporating 40’ Paradise waterfalls along with a long creek\, Indian caves\, volcanic rock cliffs\, and wildflowers throughout. Wildwood’s archetypal western look served as the set for The Rifleman\, Gunsmoke\, and Wagon Train back in the day\, as well as the movie Spartacus. We will start at Moonridge Trail and pass through various trails with bridges\, waterfalls\, crossing streams and tree canopies over approximately 5-6 miles with about a 1000’ elevation gain/loss. \nDirections:\nFrom the 101 in Thousand Oaks\, turn north on Lynn Road and continue 2.6 miles to Avenida De Los Arboles\, then turn left. Continue for about a mile to the end and turn into the Wildwood parking lot on the left. \nFrom the 118\, travel west to the 23\, exit at Avenida De Los Arboles and turn right. Drive further than you remember having to drive to this trailhead (10 or 15 minutes). SUMMARY:Chumash Trail to Rocky Peak/Triangle
DESCRIPTION:Today we will hike up the Chumash Trail in Simi Valley\, and turn left at the top to the “Triangle” as Barbara calls it. The hike will be an out and back\, and will be 7.7 miles with 1600 ft gain. It’s a nice mostly single track trail during the first climb with pretty views of the hills around. The final mile or so to the turn-around is fire-road. \nWe recommend you use poles as the Chumash Trail has some rocks on it. \nDirections: put “Chumash Park and Trail” into your chosen map service. We will park on Flanagan Drive or thereabout.
