SUMMARY:Ride the Two Winds (Dos Vientos) - Gentler Friendly
DESCRIPTION:Let’s meet at the tennis courts with the other group in case anyone wants to switch. \nBecause there is a waitlist for the Dos Vientos hike\, I’m posting a second\, hike. It will be at the same place and same time\, but we will go in the opposite direction and may be a bit shorter. \nThis hike will loop around the periphery of Dos Vientos Open Space\, passing Twin Ponds\, overlooking Potrero Road and the Oxnard Plain with the Channel Islands in the background. We will cross 3 streets along the way. \nThis hike is about 5.0 miles with 800 feet of elevation gain. \nPace: This is a gentler friendly hike. We will go at a slightly slower pace than the Intermediate Trailblazer Hikes\, and we will finish in about\n2-2 1/2 hours. Faster hikers are welcome to join us so long as they are willing to hike at the slower pace of the group or wait at the forks on the trail. There are many confusing side trails in Dos Vientos so I ask that everyone plan to stay in contact with the group. \nPlease note this trail is very exposed (no shade) and there is no water along the way. \nDIRECTIONS: From the 101 Freeway in Newbury Park\, exit at Borchard Road. Drive 3.4 miles and turn into the Dos Vientos Community Park on the right\, just after Via Ricardo (and before Via Las Brisas). Time to return to a favorite trail once again! Let’s bag a couple peaks in our beautiful Western Plateau. We will do Elliott first\, then hike to our second peak where the power station is for our break. \nThis hike will be a fast-paced\, moderately strenuous 6 mile +/- loop with 1600+/- ft of elevation gain. The Western Plateau is now accessible by way of Hill Canyon Fire Road or from the end of Rancho Conejo Blvd.\, and is expanding with the development of new trails to be enjoyed by hikers \, bikers and horse folks. This area is a beautiful system of deeply eroded canyons\, plateaus\, and ridgelines in the northwest portion of the Conejo Valley. \nFrom the end of Rancho Rd. we will drop down into the Arroyo Conejo/Hill Canyon area and start gaining elevation via the Western Plateau Trail to our first stop at Elliott Peak\, which affords views of the inland peaks of the Topa Topas to the Ventura coastline views of the Channel islands and Camarillo. We will then make our way via the Lichen Trail to the power station where we will take a quick break to enjoy the views\, then head back to our cars. If we have enough time\, light\, and interest\, we can hit Mount Rex from the backside. SUMMARY:Intermediate Hike ~ Palo Comado / Cheseboro Loop via Ranch Center trail
DESCRIPTION:This week we’ll do a loop around the northeastern regions of the Santa Monica Mountains National Recreation Area and the Las Virgenes Open Space. This area traverses many ecosystems\, including riparian\, chaparral\, and the rockscape from Galaxy Quest. SUMMARY:Oakbrook Vista Trailhead at Lang Ranch
DESCRIPTION:This will be the easier hike for Tuesday. We will also be a little slower and shorter. \nThis out-and-back of 5-miles with an elevation gain/loss of +/-900’ provides a great overview of the Thousand Oaks area\, the ocean and the western Santa Monica Mountains. The first portion is a narrow trail that zigzags its way up to enjoy views of Lang Ranch and Woodridge trails on the north and more. When the trail splits\, we’ll continue up Sandstone Hills trail until we reach 2.5 miles and then head back. \nDirections: \nFrom 101: Exit at Westlake Boulevard and turn north (away from the ocean). Drive 4.2 miles to Lang Ranch Parkway\, then turn right. SUMMARY:Sycamore Canyon Hike from the Ocean
DESCRIPTION:HIKE DETAILS:\nThis is a gentler hike for Thursday\, hopefully there will be a marine layer at the beach since we are starting at 9:00. This hike will go from the beach up to the picnic table on the fire road\, approximately 5.5 miles. Most of the hike is exposed\, but hopefully we will have some fog. Bring sunscreen and bug spray. No dogs. \nWe will meet in the Day Use parking lot at Sycamore Canyon Campground and start off along the main Sycamore Canyon road and turn up to the fire road where we will climb up to the picnic table (hopefully no water or very little at the bottom). We will follow the fire road down to the parking lot. \nDirections: \nWe will be meeting at the Sycamore Canyon Campground and day use parking area on Pacific Coast hwy. This trailhead and parking area is a few miles south from the La Jolla Canyon Parking area where we go to hike the Ray Miller Trail. \nParking is available in the campground for $12 (or free with a State Parking Permit). SUMMARY:Malibu Creek State Park (MCSP) Grand Tour including MASH
DESCRIPTION:This week I will be working with the MCSP docents and CA State Parks to reinstall the bridge over Malibu Creek to MASH. We will likely be the first large group to take advantage of the “dry” crossing (assuming all goes well on the install). \nWe will start this hike from MCSP’s Lower/Main Trailhead parking lot. You will be entering through the staffed kiosk so have your state park pass or entrance fee handy. From the Main Trailhead\, we will make our way to Crags Road. Crags Road runs along and above Malibu Creek. The park is particularly beautiful this year due to our unusually wet winter–lots of flowers and wildlife. \nOn this tour of MCSP’s central valley\, we will take a couple of detours off of Crags Road before reaching the bridge crossing. First we’ll loop up and over the Grassland Trail to take in the sweeping views of MCSP’s Torpin Plain. Next\, for even grander views\, we’ll take the Lookout Trail to the Cage Trail which rejoins Crags Road for the bridge crossing. On the trail to MASH you’ll be amazed at the dramatic effects of the high water levels that surged through earlier in the year. \nThis out-and-back hike\, plus those side trips\, clocks in at around 6.5 miles\, with an elevation gain/loss of about 750‘. DESCRIPTION:Meet at the Rosewood sign\, which is at the Regal Oak Ct. and Lynn Rd. intersection. The hike is about 5 miles with an elevation gain/loss approximately 900’. \nWe’ll walk a short distance on Lynn road to the lower Rosewood Trail\, then take the dirt trail up a shaded ravine and continue on the Rosewood trail to the Angel Vista peak. \nRosewood trail presents a clear view over the 101 Freeway carving up the Conejo Valley. This is a preview of the panorama to come at Angel Vista\, and the view grows larger as you hike higher up the mountain. SUMMARY:Top of the Santa Monicas- Sandstone Peak! (Intermediate Hike)
DESCRIPTION:We’ll be looping around the Backbone and Mishe Mokwa Trails for 6.5 miles\, moving up approximately 1500′ as we go. \nWe’ll pass Echo Cliffs\, where rock climbers ascend sheer cliffs\, a house sized boulder delicately balanced on a small rock beneath\, a giant split rock\, stunning giant sandstone formations\, and breathtaking views. \nDirections: \nDirections to the Sandstone Peak Trailhead:\nFrom Westlake Village\, exit on Westlake Blvd (CA-23 South) from the 101 Freeway\, and follow it south for several miles (approximately 7 miles) to stop sign for Mulholland West (Note: Westlake Blvd. will merge with Mulholland West before you reach the stop sign). At the stop sign\, turn right onto Mulholland (West) for about 0.4 miles. Turn right onto Little Sycamore Canyon\, which becomes Yerba Buena Road after 1.4 miles\, for 4 1/2 miles to Sandstone Peak trailhead. The Sandstone Peak lot is on the right side of the road. Look for large Sandstone Peak sign. The parking lot is above Yerba Buena Road and there is a bathroom in the parking lot. If you pass the Circle X Ranch\, you went too far. \nNote: This is a very slow driving route (narrow\, with sharp turns) and will take 20-30 minutes from the 101 to the parking lot. Give yourself plenty of time. SUMMARY:Ride the Two Winds (Dos Vientos) - Gentler Friendly
DESCRIPTION:Let’s meet under the solar panels near the community center entrance. \nThis is a second\, easier hike for Tuesday\, and a little closer to home for some of us. \nThis hike will loop around the periphery of Dos Vientos Open Space\, passing Twin Ponds\, overlooking Potrero Road and the Oxnard Plain with the Channel Islands in the background. We will cross 3 streets along the way. \nThis hike is about 5.0 miles with 800 feet of elevation gain. \nPace: This is a gentler friendly hike. We will go at a slightly slower pace than the Intermediate Trailblazer Hikes\, and we will finish in about\n2-2 1/2 hours. Faster hikers are welcome to join us so long as they are willing to hike at the slower pace of the group or wait at the forks on the trail. There are many confusing side trails in Dos Vientos so I ask that everyone plan to stay in contact with the group. \nPlease note this trail is very exposed (no shade) and there is no water along the way. \nDIRECTIONS: From the 101 Freeway in Newbury Park\, exit at Borchard Road. For a fee of $550 this guided event includes camping every night in a State Park campground\, transportation to and from the trailheads and all your meals. You will need to provide your own camping gear (tent\, sleeping bag\, etc) that will be trucked for you between campgrounds so you don’t need to carry it. \nYou can find all information about the event at https://www.smmtc.org/bbtrek/ including a complete multi-day itinerary and descriptions of each day’s hike. SUMMARY:Wildwood Central Park ~ Gentler Intermediate
DESCRIPTION:This is a second Gentler Hike on Thursday. It will also be at Wildwood\, but starting from the main parking lot. \nWildwood Park in Thousand Oaks is one of the most versatile local parks there is\, with 27 miles of trails skittering through rocky cliffs\, cacti-filled desert environs\, volcanic rock\, riparian forest\, and a cool\, watery canyon. Highlights of the hike include waterfalls incorporating 40’ Paradise waterfalls along with a long creek\, Indian caves\, volcanic rock cliffs\, and wildflowers throughout. Wildwood’s archetypal western look served as the set for The Rifleman\, Gunsmoke\, and Wagon Train back in the day\, as well as the movie Spartacus. Currently\, it’s very beautiful with an abundance of wildflowers and California poppies in addition to powerful waterfalls. \nIt will start at the main parking lot and head straight out onto the Mesa Trail. We’ll make a left and go up the Stagecoach trail until we turn down towards the water treatment plant. Along the way we will pass through various trails with bridges\, waterfalls\, crossing streams and tree canopies over approximately 5 miles with about a 900’ elevation gain/loss. \nDirections:\nFrom the 101 in Thousand Oaks\, turn north on Lynn Road and continue 2.6 miles to Avenida De Los Arboles\, then turn left. Continue for about a mile to the end and turn into the Wildwood parking lot on the left. \nFrom the 118\, travel west to the 23\, exit at Avenida De Los Arboles and turn right. Drive further than you remember having to drive to this trailhead (10 or 15 minutes). Once at the bottom\, we’ll hike to the end of the trail and take a break while viewing the castle gates and giant model train system. DESCRIPTION:Ornithologist and multispecies expert Dr. Julie Morley will kick off COSF’s 2024 speaker series at 7:00 p.m. on May 1 with a videoconference presentation on how you can help the Hummingbirds. \nShe will discuss how to create a hospitable hummingbird habitat in your backyard\, how to choose and maintain healthy feeders\, and which species you’re likely to see in our area. Dr. Morley will also cover hummingbird lifecycles\, which species are threatened or endangered and what else we can do to help. \nDr. Julie Morley is an ornithologist\, author\, photographer\, multispecies scholar and founder of Multispecies Media\, a nonprofit that seeks to educate people about the importance of coexistence with other species. She is the author of Future Sacred: The Connected Creativity of Nature and wrote her doctoral dissertation\, Crow Cosmopolitics\, on corvid behavior. Her Instagram account\, @juliejmorley\, focuses on her photography of hummingbirds. \nDr. Morley received her PhD in Multispecies Studies and her MA in Transformative Leadership from the California Institute of Integral Studies. SUMMARY:Kanan Dume Almost to Castro Peak OAB
DESCRIPTION:Our Out And Back (OAB) hike will take us on a less-traveled but quite beautiful part of the 60-mile Backbone Trail\, which runs through the Santa Monica Mountains National Recreation Area from Will Rogers State Park in the east to Point Mugu in the west. \nThe route begins at Kanan Dume Road and goes southerly a short distance\, allowing us to cross over the southernmost tunnel (Tunnel 1) above Kanan Dume Road. We then proceed easterly roughly 3 1/2 miles and up 1250 feet\, gradually winding our way up and through Latigo Canyon\, crossing Latigo Canyon Road\, and then ending at a saddle or on a bluff immediately south of Castro Peak with spectacular Pacific views. \nhttp://photos1.meetupstatic.com/photos/event/3/8/0/6/event_101654342.jpeg \nThe terrain is a mix of single and double-file trail. The majority of our out and back hike is wooded and shaded canyon trails\, offering periodic glimpses of the Pacific\, but the route eventually gives way to open hillsides and ridgelines\, and an open area over the Pacific. \nThe total distance for this hike will be approximately 7 miles with 1550 feet of elevation gain. \nNo “Plus Ones” allowed. \nNo dogs allowed on the hike. \nDirections: \nFrom the 101 – exit at the Kanan Road exit and drive south (toward the ocean) 7.8 miles\, going through two of the three tunnels on this road (which changes name to Kanan Dume Road). Drive 4.4 miles from PCH\, going through one tunnel\, and then turn left into the “Backbone Trail” parking area\, almost immediately after coming out of the tunnel. SUMMARY:Hill Canyon Santa Rosa Regional Park
DESCRIPTION:This is a second hike for Tuesday. We did this hike a few weeks ago but this time we will go the opposite direction. We will start at the parking area in Hill Canyon\, cross the bridge over the runoff creek and follow that trail past the Western Plateau turn and keep on the Hawk Canyon Trail. The Hawk Canyon Trail connects to Western Plateau Trail at the top but we will go around the Plateau Rim Trail at the top before heading back down to the fire road and back to the parking lot. We will take a few breaks along the way to wait for everyone to catch up. This is approximately 5.5 miles with an elevation gain of approximately 1000 feet. \nDirections: \nFrom Moorpark Road in the Santa Rosa Valley\, drive west on Santa Rosa Road for 3.7 miles\, turn left (south) on Hill Canyon Road for about 0.6 miles to the parking lot. \nFrom the 101 Freeway in Camarillo\, take exit 52 onto Santa Rosa Road and drive northeast. SUMMARY:On the Backbone from Newton Canyon to Buzzards Roost - Waterfalls? Wildflowers?
DESCRIPTION:Let’s go see what’s in bloom in one of our favorite hiking spots\, Newton Canyon to Buzzard’s Roost! \nThis area was burned over in the Woolsey fire\, but since then it has been thick with wildflowers\, freely flowing water\, and a few waterfalls\, including the Upper Newton Canyon falls\, above. Last spring\, we saw lupines\, poppies\, lilies\, and a real rarity – Indian Chief (related to Indian Paintbrush\, but much rarer here in southern California). There is a tiny bit of Poison Oak sprouting\, easily avoided. This year\, the Phlox and Phaecelia are already starting to poke their heads out\, and Shooting Stars are starting to appear\, so let’s go see what else is blooming. \nFrom the Kanan Rd trailhead\, we’ll jump on the Backbone Trail for a cruise over and up to the peak of the Zuma Ridge Trail at Buzzard’s Roost. On the ridge\, we’ll have a great view of Zuma Beach and the Pacific. On our way there\, we’ll cross a free-flowing creek near where a footbridge once stood\, pass under a scorched oak canopy\, and come out to a beautiful view of Upper Newton Falls spilling down a cliff to the valley floor. \nThis is an out and back hike at a total of 8 miles\, with 1600′ total elevation gain\, most of it leading to the turnaround point with the ocean view at Buzzards Roost. Even the beginning and end of the hike are mostly exposed after the fire. The middle portion is completely exposed; prepare accordingly. \nDirections: \nFrom the 101\, go south (toward beaches) on Kanan Road about 8 miles to just before the third tunnel (T1). DESCRIPTION:Time to re-explore the Los Robles trail system. This will be about a 5-6 mile lollipop hike with approximately 700-1000 feet of elevation gain. We start at the trailhead at the back parking lot of Triunfo Park and go up to the Los Robles trail. We then loop around counter-clockwise by way of the White Horse canyon trail\, across the ridge\, and back down into the Triunfo trail. SUMMARY:Los Robles Trailhead at Greenmeadow Avenue ~ Braille Trail ~ Gentler Friendly
DESCRIPTION:NOTE: We will leave from the Greenmeadow Parking lot and NOT from the Moorpark Lot. \nThere will be another hike posted for Thursday\, so no rush to sign-up. \nOur hike leaves from Greenmeadow Trailhead (a.k.a. Braille Trail). This hike will be an IN/OUT on the Los Robles West Trail. We will go out 2 1/2 miles and return the same\, for exactly 5 miles with about 800′ of total elevation gain. \n“Robles” is Spanish for oaks\, and we’ll see plenty of them on this beautiful\, hike. \nTrailhead Directions: From the 101 in Thousand Oaks\, turn south on Moorpark Road. Drive about 0.5 miles turning RIGHT onto Greenmeadow Avenue\, travel 0.3 miles to the end. The trailhead is to the left. SUMMARY:Kanan Dume Almost to Castro Peak OAB (Fast Paced)
DESCRIPTION:Please follow the written directions below as the map may not be correct. \nOur Out And Back (OAB) hike will take us on a less-traveled but quite beautiful part of the 60-mile Backbone Trail\, which runs through the Santa Monica Mountains National Recreation Area from Will Rogers State Park in the east to Point Mugu in the west. \nThe route begins at Kanan Dume Road and goes southerly a short distance\, allowing us to cross over the southernmost tunnel (Tunnel 1) above Kanan Dume Road. We then proceed easterly roughly 3 1/2 miles and up 1250 feet\, gradually winding our way up and through Latigo Canyon\, crossing Latigo Canyon Road\, and then ending at a saddle or on a bluff immediately south of Castro Peak with spectacular Pacific views. \nhttp://photos1.meetupstatic.com/photos/event/3/8/0/6/event_101654342.jpeg \nThe terrain is a mix of single and double-file trail. The majority of our out and back hike is wooded and shaded canyon trails\, offering periodic glimpses of the Pacific\, but the route eventually gives way to open hillsides and ridgelines\, and an open area over the Pacific. \nThe total distance for this hike will be approximately 7 miles with 1550 feet of elevation gain. \nNo “Plus Ones” allowed. \nNo dogs allowed on the hike. \nDirections: \nFrom the 101 – exit at the Kanan Road exit and drive south (toward the ocean) 7.8 miles\, going through two of the three tunnels on this road (which changes name to Kanan Dume Road). DESCRIPTION:Hike Description (Intermediate/Strenuous)\nWe will be hiking through the eastern most portion of Malibu Creek State Park\, up to the rarely seen\, North East backside of Castro Crest – via the Bulldog fire road. The views are stunning\, all the way to the top\, with sandstone monoliths casting dramatic shadows across the land. \nThis hike starts at the easternmost (2nd) intersection of Crags Road and Seminole. We will meet there at the corner\, and then hike a short distance\, through the community further up Crags Rd before entering Malibu Creek State Park.\nPlease pay attention to the signs for permitted parking along the road\, and if you can\, carpool with someone. – an option for those who are Carpooling – meet and then carpool from Reagan Ranch parking area at Mulholland & Lake Vista Dr. As we will be entering and leaving from the Malibou Lake neighborhood trailhead\, and parking is limited\, please be considerate.\nThe hike distance is a little over 8 miles (out and back) with 2150 elevation gain. SUMMARY:Ride the Two Winds (Dos Vientos) - Gentler Friendly
DESCRIPTION:I’m sure we will see plenty of wildflowers blooming in Dos Vientos. \nThis hike will loop around the periphery of Dos Vientos Open Space\, passing Twin Ponds\, overlooking Potrero Road and the Oxnard Plain with the Channel Islands in the background. We will cross 2 streets along the way. \nThis hike is about 5.0 miles with 800 feet of elevation gain. \nPace: This is a gentler friendly hike. We will go at a slightly slower pace than the Intermediate Trailblazer Hikes\, and we will finish in about\n2 hours. Faster hikers are welcome to join us so long as they are willing to hike at the slower pace of the group or wait at the forks on the trail. There are many confusing side trails in Dos Vientos so I ask that everyone plan to stay in contact with the group. \nPlease note this trail is very exposed (no shade) and there is no water along the way. \nDIRECTIONS: From the 101 Freeway in Newbury Park\, exit at Borchard Road. DESCRIPTION:This hike starts at Castillo Trail to Wildwood Park. In the spring\, it’s spectacular with an abundance of mustard greens\, wildflowers and California poppies in addition to bountiful water in the waterfalls and creeks. \nWildwood Park in Thousand Oaks is one of the most versatile local parks with 27 miles of trails skittering through this area\, which includes Wildwood’s archetypal western look that served as the set for The Rifleman\, Gunsmoke\, and Wagon Train back in the day\, as well as the movie Spartacus. \nWe hike various trails with a long creek\, crossing streams and bridges\, Indian caves\, volcanic rock cliffs and waterfalls passing through desert\, meadow\, and woodland environments at various points along the way. \nWe’ll hike over 5-6 miles with approximately 1000’ of elevation gain/loss. \nDirections: \nFrom the 101 in Thousand Oaks\, turn north on Lynn Road and continue to Avenida De Los Arboles\, then turn left. SUMMARY:Rancho Sierra Vista\, Peace\, Love\, and Joy
DESCRIPTION:Let’s head out to the famed Peace\, Love\, Joy arch at the Danielson. This out and back hike wanders through grasslands and chaparral from the Rancho Sierra Vista trailhead\, then climbs up Danielson fire road for some fantastic views north to Port Hueneme and Oxnard and west toward the Pacific Ocean. If it’s really clear\, we’ll catch a glimpse of Mount Baldy in the distance to our east. At the upper end we’ll visit the remnants of an old cabin and the Danielson Monument. The monument is dedicated to Richard Danielson\, the person who donated much of the land for the Santa Monica Mountains National Recreation Area (SMNMRA). The hike will start in SMNMRA and pass into Point Mugu State Park. SUMMARY:Santa Cruz Island Day Trip with Island Packers
DESCRIPTION:Okay\, we are rescheduling this trip for April 18\, the weather should be better. The water was too chopping on March 7 so they cancelled. Perhaps those who had booked for March 7 could transfer their tickets for April 18 but please contact Island Packers today. Please book your passage before you sign-up with Trailblazers\, as the boat may fill-up. \nThe trip by boat lasts a little over an hour leaving Ventura Harbor at 9:00 AM. They want us to be at the dock 45 minutes prior to departure (8:15 AM). Once we arrive on the Island\, we’ll hike 2.5 miles out to Potato Harbor via Cavern Point\, and return along Potato Harbor Road. When we reach the camp ground we’ll have lunch. The hike is very moderate and should return us in plenty of time for some sightseeing at the historic ranch\, museum\, or extra hiking into Scorpion Canyon. We will have a good time hiking through the area and get a great workout. This hike will be a fast-paced\, moderately strenuous 7 mile trek with an elevation gain of 1\,200+ ft\, through the Conejo historic Danielson Ranch area. We will be taking the standard route (no Fossil Trail). We may or may not get back back before dark\, so please pack a head lamp or flashlight. We will get some killer views of the 1000 Oaks and Newbury Park areas as well as Point Mugu and even the Channel Islands and Pacific Ocean on a clear day. Go south (towards the ocean) on Wendy all the way until it dead ends at the Santa Monica Mountains National Recreation Area. There is ample free parking on the dirt along Potrero Road. SUMMARY:Rosewood Trail: Lynn to Angel Vista - Gentler Intermediate
DESCRIPTION:Meet at the Rosewood sign\, which is at the Regal Oak Ct. and Lynn Rd. intersection. The hike is about 5 miles with an elevation gain/loss approximately 900’. \nWe’ll walk a short distance on Lynn road to the lower Rosewood Trail\, then take the dirt trail up a shaded ravine and continue on the Rosewood trail to the Angel Vista peak. \nRosewood trail presents a clear view over the 101 Freeway carving up the Conejo Valley. This is a preview of the panorama to come at Angel Vista\, and the view grows larger as you hike higher up the mountain. SUMMARY:Fig Newton Canyon (off Kanan Road) to fire road
DESCRIPTION:This is an alternative hike for Tuesday\, and not quite as fast-paced as the other hike. We’re only going 5 miles to the fire road. \nFrom the Kanan Rd trailhead\, we’ll jump on the Backbone Trail for a cruise down into Newton Canyon. On our way there\, we’ll cross the creek\, pass under an oak canopy\, and come out into an opening. At the opening\, look toward the sandstone formations in the distance\, and we may see a flow of water from Upper Newton Falls\, especially since it may rain the weekend before. SUMMARY:Encinal Canyon to Top of the World ~ 8 mile Intermediate Hike
DESCRIPTION:Encinal Canyon is named for encina\, the Spanish word for the holm oak\, a lovely Mediterranean tree with holly characteristics. Holm oaks are one of the main trees used to establish truffle orchards\, but we’ll be nosing around the canyon strictly for its beauty. \nThe trail from Encinal is a smooth\, firm\, and well-traveled single track\, swooping and winding with a constant\, gentle slope. We’ll have fabulous views of the coast for much of the way. Close to the top\, we’ll take on the slightly steeper Etz Meloy Motorway\, then the last tenth of a mile is up a seldom-used trail to the isolated peak\, where we’ll both lose and catch our breath with a 360-degree view. \nFrom our perch above it all we’ll see Sandstone Peak to the west\, Simi Valley to the north\, Ladyface and Mt Baldy to the east and the Channel Islands to the south and west. \nThis is an 8 mile out and back hike\, with about 1200′ of elevation gain. \nNOTE: Please review the guidelines to participate in our hikes. DESCRIPTION:NOTE: \nI have cancelled the hike for Newton Canyon off Kanan for Tuesday April 16\, because there was more rain that I expected and that hike takes us down into the valley and I think it will be too wet. So this is an alternative\, but we will still get in at least 5 miles. We will start in the parking lot at the end of Moorhead and walk down the street to Las Padres and go up that path\, around and all the way over to the parking lot off Greenmeadow and take the hiking path back to our parking lot at Moorpark. It’s a fun hike and this area dries out very fast so it should not be muddy. \n“Robles” is Spanish for oaks\, and we’ll see plenty of them on this beautiful hike. We might even see some wild flowers. \nTrailhead Directions: From the 101 in Thousand Oaks\, turn south on Moorpark Road.
