SUMMARY:A longer Sycamore Canyon evening hike: Joanne's route
DESCRIPTION:PLEASE NOTE THE PARKING/MEETUP LOCATION DESCRIBED BELOW (IT’S NOT WENDY & POTRERO).\nRoute is a past favorite with the Weekday Trailblazers and Geo-hikes. Joanne is visiting SoCal\, will attend\, just like old times! Hike is 9.2 miles and about 1150ft up. Pace will be moderate (~2.5 MPH). It’s a longer than usual evening hike and a solid workout. We will head down the paved Sycamore Canyon Road and drop into the canyon\, make a right onto the Ranch Center Road and take it up hill and out of the canyon until we reach some old water tanks. A left turn and descend down the Ranch Center Fire Road\, returning us to the bottom of Sycamore Canyon near the ranger’s house\, the campground and where we will take a quick break and regroup. After\, head back up the Sycamore Canyon Road to our cars. Note: the Ranch Center Road and the Ranch Center Fire Road are different roads. \nHike is cross-posted with Geo-hikes: https://www.meetup.com/https-www-meetup-com-geo-hikes/events/294357984/ \nBRING A HEADLAMP OR FLASHLIGHT! \nDIRECTIONS:\nTake Highway 101 to Thousand Oaks. Exit at Wendy Drive. Go south (towards the ocean) on Wendy. At Lynn turn right\, then left at Reino that turns into Potrero Road. Take Potrero to Pinehill and turn right and park (Do not park on Potrero as you need a permit). Walk back along Potrero to its intersection with Big Sycamore Canyon Road that is more or less across from 4153 Potrero Road-don’t pester folks at 4153 Potrero and keep your voices down. We will start hike there. There are no restrooms at the trailhead. \nEssentials :\nBring water and a snack. Be willing to get a good workout! Bring your cellphone\, a headlamp or flashlight. \nDISCLAIMER / RELEASE OF LIABILITY\nIMPORTANT\, PLEASE READ BELOW IN ITS ENTIRETY:\nThe hike host is a volunteer and not responsible for the group. Safety should be a priority for everyone in the group. Please treat this meet-up as hiking with a group of friends. If you become fatigued and unable to continue the hike\, it is expected you will advise the hike host of this and return to our starting point on your own. If you are able to proceed\, it is expected that you will maintain line of sight with other members of the group at all times and help to promote the group’s safety and fitness goals. Outdoor sports and other events we plan can be inherently dangerous and accidents may happen. By participating in any posted event\, you are taking responsibility for your own safety and well-being. The Weekday Trailblazers Meetup Group and its organizers are not trained leaders and we do not confirm the qualifications of any of its members to lead or participate in trips. All participants take full responsibility for their own actions. If you choose to sign up for this or any Weekday Trailblazers Meetup event\, you are releasing the Weekday Trailblazers Meetup Group and its organizers from all liability in case of possible injuries. Your personal safety depends on your own judgment and experience. \n** Anyone 18 yrs. or younger must be accompanied by a parent or legal guardian.

SUMMARY:Sycamore Canyon Hike from the Ocean
DESCRIPTION:HIKE DETAILS:\nThis is a gentler hike for Thursday\, hopefully there will be a marine layer at the beach since we are starting at 9:00. This hike will go from the beach up to the picnic table on the fire road\, approximately 5.5 miles. Most of the hike is exposed\, but hopefully we will have some fog. Bring sunscreen and bug spray. No dogs. \nWe will meet in the Day Use parking lot at Sycamore Canyon Campground and start off along the main Sycamore Canyon road and turn up to the fire road where we will climb up to the picnic table (hopefully no water or very little at the bottom). If you want to turn left at the picnic table and go up to where the Ray Miller trail meets the fire road (another mile up and mile back) you can do that and then turn around. We will follow the fire road down to the parking lot. \nDirections: \nWe will be meeting at the Sycamore Canyon Campground and day use parking area on Pacific Coast hwy. This trailhead and parking area is a few miles south from the La Jolla Canyon Parking area where we go to hike the Ray Miller Trail. \nParking is available in the campground for $12 (or free with a State Parking Permit\, the 2022 Parking Permit is still good through 2023). There may not be free parking on PCH. \nThere are also restrooms at the day parking lot. \nDISCLAIMER / RELEASE OF LIABILITY \nIMPORTANT\, PLEASE READ BELOW IN ITS ENTIRETY: \nThe hike host is a volunteer and not responsible for the group. Safety should be a priority for everyone in the group. Please treat this meet-up as hiking with a group of friends. SUMMARY:Oak Creek Canyon to Los Padres Loop ~ Gentler Intermediate
DESCRIPTION:Oak Creek Canyon Trail is a rather special trail in Los Robles Open Space that is designed for the blind as well as the sighted. The all-access trail is shaded by a canopy of oaks\, while the loop trail spends more time in the chaparral. The trails form a U-shape that is connected by hiking a tenth of a mile on Greenmeadow Avenue.\nWe will start at Oak Creek Canyon and proceed to a connector trail a short distance until we meet a junction with Los Robles Trail East. Along this big loop\, you’ll travel through a couple of very nice oak groves\, and get some great views throughout the Los Robles (along the Los Robles Overlook/Scenic View Loop) and Los Padres trails encompassed in the Robles Open Space. There is a very short section along streets/sidewalks when we return back to the latter part of Oak Creek Canyon Trail and complete the big loop.\nThis hike will be a five-mile loop with about a 900’ elevation gain/loss. \nDirection: From the 101 freeway\, drive to the south end of Moorpark Rd\, turn right on Greenmeadow Ave.\, and go a half mile to the parking lot. \nPlease review our guidelines to participate in our hikes.\nRestrictions apply for your safety and ours: \n\nDon’t show up unless you’re shown on the “Attending” list.\nPlan on KEEPING UP with the group and completing the entire hike at a moderate pace\, or please find an alternative hike that better suits your hiking level.\nNo “Plus Ones” or dogs on Weekday Trailblazer hikes.\n\nDISCLAIMER/RELEASE OF LIABILITY – PLEASE READ IN ITS ENTIRETY\nThe hike host is a volunteer and not responsible for the group. Safety should be a priority for everyone in the group. Please treat this meet-up as hiking with a group of friends. If you become fatigued and unable to continue the hike\, it is expected you will advise the hike host of this and return to our starting point on your own. SUMMARY:8:30 am - Top of the Santa Monicas - Mishe Mokwa Loop
DESCRIPTION:Hike Description (Intermediate/Strenuous) \nWe will be exploring one of the most beautiful areas of the Santa Monica Mountains. From the Sandstone Peak Parking lot we will begin with an ascent to Sandstone Peak (the highest point of the Santa Monica Mountains\, 3111′ above sea level) and then veer off to the right\, taking the Mishe Mokwa loop. As we hike Mishe Mokwa we will be passing Inspiration Point\, the (real) Boney Mountain\, Tri-Peaks\, pass Split Rock\, and then see Echo Cliffs\, where rock climbers ascend sheer cliffs\, and a house sized boulder balances delicately on a small rock beneath. This route will give us a total of about 6.5 miles\,and approximately 1500′ elevation gain as we go up and down. \nDirections: at least 30 minutes from 101/Westlake Boulevard \nFrom Westlake Village\, exit 101 onto Westlake Blvd (CA-23 South)\, and follow it south for approximately 7 miles to stop sign for Mulholland West (Note: Westlake Blvd. will merge with Mulholland East before you reach the stop sign). At the stop sign\, turn right onto Mulholland (West) for about 0.4 miles. Turn right onto Little Sycamore Canyon\, which becomes Yerba Buena Road after 1.4 miles\, for 4 1/2 miles to Sandstone Peak trailhead. The Sandstone Peak lot is on the right side of the road. Look for large Sandstone Peak sign. The parking lot is above Yerba Buena Road and there is a bathroom at the end of the parking lot. If you pass the Circle X Ranch\, you went too far. Turn around!! \nAlternately\, from Pacific Coast Highway take Yerba Buena Road (near Neptune’s Net) approximately 7 miles (passing the Circle X Ranch. Note: Sandstone Peak trailhead is approximately 1 mile from the Circle X Ranch). OR HWY 23 (Decker Cyn – 4 miles west of Point Dume)\, turn onto Mulholland and follow directions as shown above. \nNote: This is a very slow driving route (narrow\, with sharp turns) and will take 30 minutes from the 101 to the parking lot. Give yourself plenty of time. Cell reception is marginal (at best) up there\, so we won’t be waiting on any “I’m late” calls. \nBring sunscreen\, plenty of water\, and wear sturdy shoes and a sun hat. Please consider bringing the 10 essentials ().\nOur departure time is 8:30 a.m. Please plan on arriving by 8:15 to use the restroom\, get your boots and backpack on in time. \nDo NOT leave anything of value in your car\, at this or any other trailhead. If you become fatigued and unable to continue the hike\, it is expected you will advise the hike host of this and return to our starting point on your own. SUMMARY:Ray Miller Trail in La Jolla Canyon ~ Gentler Intermediate
DESCRIPTION:I pre-hiked the trail this morning and it is absolutely stunning with wildflowers beside the awesome blend of ocean and mountain views in Malibu’s La Jolla Canyon. The trail follows the canyon eastward\, away from the ocean. Then\, it quickly brings you back toward the ocean at a gradual incline. There’s a great lookout spot where it gives you a breathtaking view of the Pacific Coast Highway against the backdrop of the Pacific Ocean\, with sweeping views toward Mugu Rock on the west and Sycamore Cove on the east. After another peak\, you’ll start a slight decline that brings you to the fire road where we will turn around. Along the way\, we’ll be treated to magnificent sweeping views of La Jolla and Big Sycamore Canyons\, and of course\, the largest ocean in the world. On a clear day\, the Channel Islands are easily within sight.\nThis is a 5-6 mile out and back hike with an elevation gain/loss of about 1100’. \nDirections: \nFrom Los Angeles\, take the Pacific Coast Highway (PCH) north\, 22 miles from Malibu Canyon Rd. Across the street from Thornhill Broome Beach is the entrance to La Jolla Canyon. It is very clearly marked. Turn right. \nFrom Ventura\, take PCH eastward\, and turn left 4 miles after Las Posas Road. \nHeads up: There is a parking fee in the lot (or free with state parking pass). There is free parking on PCH just a short walk to the trailhead. \nPlease review the guidelines (guidelines) to join our hikes.\nRestrictions apply for your safety and ours: \n\nDon’t show up unless you’re shown on the “Attending” list.\nPlan on KEEPING UP with the group and completing the entire hike at a moderate pace\, or please find an alternative hike that better suits your hiking level.\nNo “Plus Ones” or dogs on Weekday Trailblazer hikes.\n\nDISCLAIMER/RELEASE OF LIABILITY – PLEASE READ IN ITS ENTIRETY \nThe hike host is a volunteer and not responsible for the group. Safety should be a priority for everyone in the group. Please treat this meet-up as hiking with a group of friends. If you become fatigued and unable to continue the hike\, it is expected you will advise the hike host of this and return to our starting point on your own. If you are able to proceed\, it is expected that you will maintain line of sight with other members of the group at all times and help to promote the group’s safety and fitness goals.\nOutdoor sports and other events we plan can be inherently dangerous and accidents may happen. By participating in any posted event\, you are taking responsibility for your own safety and well-being. The Weekday Trailblazers Meetup Group and its organizers are not trained leaders and we do not confirm the qualifications of any of its members to lead or participate in trips. SUMMARY:Rancho Sierra Vista\, Peace\, Love\, and Joy ~ Cooler\, Gentler Hike
DESCRIPTION:This is a cooler\, gentler hike after a hot\, hot weekend. Because of the heat\, we will pace this as a gentler hike and we will take some breaks to let slower hikers catch up and turn around just before going up to the monument. \nWe will start in the parking lot at Rancho Sierra Vista and head up through grasslands and chaparral from the Rancho Sierra Vista trailhead\, then climb up Boney Mountain Trail for some fantastic views west to Port Hueneme\, Oxnard and the Pacific Ocean. We may see Santa Cruz Island as well as the Los Padres Mountain range if it’s not hazy. If it’s really clear\, we’ll catch a glimpse of Mount Baldy in the distance to our east. \nThis out and back hike is about 6 miles with 1200 feet of elevation gain. The hike will start in SMMNRA and pass into Point Mugu State Park and Wilderness. It’s mostly single track and fire road. Dogs are not permitted in State Park wilderness areas. \nPlease bring ample hydration. There is poison oak at the Monument; if you don’t know what it looks like\, stay on the paths and don’t stray into the woods. \nNote: We will meet at the Rancho Sierra Vista paved parking lot. Meet near the bathrooms. Do NOT leave anything of value in your car\, at this or any other trailhead. \nDISCLAIMER / RELEASE OF LIABILITY \nThe hike host is a volunteer and not responsible for the group. Safety should be a priority for everyone in the group. Please treat this meet-up as hiking with a group of friends. If you become fatigued and unable to continue the hike\, it is expected you will advise the hike host of this and return to our starting point on your own. SUMMARY:Malibu Creek State Park (MCSP) from Down Under ~ Heat-Modified
DESCRIPTION:We will start this hike into MCSP from Tapia Park. The Tapia Park entrance is just before the Piuma intersection. Note: a day use fee (machine at entrance) is required if you don’t have a State Park Pass. After you enter Tapia\, drive to the picnic area and take a hard left onto Dorothy Lane. Follow the signs to Salvation Army Camp & Conference Center. It’s about 0.4 mile to the Salvation Army Camp entrance. Park on the right side of the road (lined pull-in parking stalls). \nOur hike starts on the Tapia Spur Trail\, which winds through a lovely chaparral “forest” and drops down onto the road by the park’s group campground. We’ll take the first in a series of side-trips to explore the Ann Skager trail that loops through a deeply shaded riparian/oak woodland. From there we will make our way to Crags Road. Crags Road runs along and above Malibu Creek. The water level has dropped enough to allow us to cross over the creek to Mott’s Road\, which leads to the MCSP Visitor’s Center. From there we’ll cross the “big” bridge to the famous Rock Pool\, our turnaround point. On the way back\, we’ll loop up and over the Grassland Trail to take in the sweeping views of MCSP’s central valley. \nThis out-and-back hike\, plus those side trips (Ann Skager\, Rock Pool\, Grassland Trail)\, clocks in at around 5.5 miles\, with an elevation gain/loss of about 650‘. I have timed this hike at 2 1/2 hours to allow a leisurely pace in anticipation of warmer weather. \nDirections: From the 101 Freeway take Las Virgenes Rd.\, south for 4.8 miles to the Tapia Park entrance (south of main MCSP entrance). \nPlease review the guidelines (link to the guidelines) to join our hikes.\nRestrictions apply for your safety and ours: \n\nProof of vaccination required.\nDon’t show up unless you’re shown on the “Attending” list.\nPLEASE bring plenty of water.\nYour safety is your own personal responsibility\, but the hike leader reserves the right to ask you to leave if you come unprepared.\nNo “Plus Ones” or dogs on Weekday Trailblazer hikes.\n\nDISCLAIMER/RELEASE OF LIABILITY – PLEASE READ IN ITS ENTIRETY\nThe hike host is a volunteer and not responsible for the group. SUMMARY:Intermediate 8-9 miles Ray Miller Trail and Overlook Trail in Malibu
DESCRIPTION:Join us on an out and back hike up the Ray Miller Trail and the Overlook Trail. We’ll turn back around the Guadalasca Trail intersection. We’ll enjoy beautiful ocean views as we descend. We’ll pick up about 1500’ gain on this 8-9 mile adventure. IF it gets too hot we will have the option to shorten the hike. \nLying along the brilliant blue Pacific Ocean at the west end of Malibu (just shy of Port Hueneme)\, the swelling blue ocean is rivaled in beauty by the undulating native California grasslands. On a clear day\, the Channel Islands are easily within sight. \nMost of the trail is exposed\, so sunscreen is highly recommended and plenty of water. It is mosquito season so it’s up to you whether you should bring bug repellent. \nWe’ll meet in the parking lot near the Ray Miller Trailhead (look for the brilliant yellow sign). SUMMARY:Point Dume to Paradise Cove - and back! Gentler
DESCRIPTION:This is a cooler\, gentler hike along the surf during a hot\, hot week! \nThe Point Dume staircase has been restored and improved\, so we’ll park at Westward\, climb up and over the bluff to the top of the stairs\, make our way gingerly around the cliff\, then down the stairs to the beach. On Thursday\, the tides will be in our favor\, so we’ll scamper along the beach to Paradise Cove\, where those of us who choose to\, will indulge in a delicious (but expensive) brunch. For those of us on a stricter budget\, bring a sandwich and a drink (but plan on hiking your trash back out) to have just down the beach. \nWe will absolutely *not* point out Barbra Streisand’s home on the cliff above the beach at the end of Zumirez Drive. \nThe Westward beach has somewhat expensive parking\, but we’ll arrive early\, when prices are lower. \nPlease bring ample hydration. There beach is exposed\, with no shade. \nNote: We will meet at the far eastern end of the Westward lot (film crews notwithstanding). SUMMARY:Dos Vientos -- Ride the Two Winds\, a Gentler Friendly (but not Beginner) Hike.
DESCRIPTION:Please note this hike is not for beginners. The Dos Vientos Trail system is a network of many trails and you need to be able to keep in contact to avoid being lost! Not the best hike is you are a slow hiker. \nNote also that there is a chance of some rain Thursday morning. Unless it is significant\, I won’t cancel\, so stay tuned in the morning for any last minute info. \nThis hike will loop around the periphery of Dos Vientos\, passing Twin Ponds\, overlooking Potrero Road and the Oxnard Plain with the Channel Islands in the background. Some short sections will be along the street. \nThis hike is about 6.0 miles with 1100 feet of elevation gain. \nPace: This is a gentler friendly hike. We will go at a slightly slower pace than the Intermediate Trailblazer Hike\, but we will try to finish in 2.5 hours. Faster hikers are welcome to join us so long as they are willing to hike at the slower pace of the group or wait at the forks on the trail. There are many confusing side trails in Dos Vientos so I will mark the trail if necessary\, but I ask that everyone plan to stay in contact with the group. Note there is no cover on most of this trail so bring plenty of water. \nPlease review the revised guidelines to participate in our hikes. We are requiring proof of vaccination to join a hike. \nRestrictions apply for your safety and ours: \n\nDon’t show up unless you’re on the “Attending” list\nUnregistered or waitlisted will be turned away\nNo “Plus Ones” on this hike\nPlan on completing the entire hike or please find an alternative hike that better suits your hiking level.\nNo dogs\nAll participants must be 18 or older\, or accompanied by a parent or legal guardian.\n\nDIRECTIONS: From the 101 Freeway in Newbury Park\, exit at Borchard Road. Drive 3.4 miles and turn into the Dos Vientos Community Park on the right\, just after Via Ricardo (and before Via Las Brisas). Meet by the tennis courts to the left. \nIf you are coming from the NW\, exit Wendy and turn left on Wendy and then a right on Borchard to Dos Vientos Community Park. If you become fatigued and unable to continue the hike\, it is expected you will advise the hike host of this and return to our starting point on your own. If you are able to proceed\, it is expected that you will maintain line of sight with other members of the group at all times and help to promote the group’s safety and fitness goals. \nOutdoor sports and other events we plan can be inherently dangerous and accidents may happen. SUMMARY:Rancho Sierra Vista Beginner Hike
DESCRIPTION:Instead of our usual starting point at the Rancho Sierra Vista trailhead for SAMO\, this shorter\, beginner hike will start at the newer COSCA trailhead lot\, 1.5 miles west of the intersection of Lynn and Reino in Newbury Park. See photo for what to look for off of Lynn Road. Note: This is NOT the National Park Service lot. \nBeginner hikes are intended for those new to hiking\, or new to the area. Preference will be given to attendees who have not hiked with us regularly. \nWe’ll do a loop around the flats and heights south of Lynn Road between Dos Vientos and the historical Guadalasca / Broome Ranch. We’ll see the remaining wildflowers\, probably some equestrians\, and a glimpse into the privately-owned canyons west of Sycamore Canyon and north of Hidden Pond. \nTotal distance is 4 miles\, with an elevation gain and loss of 500′\, shorter and less elevation than WTB’s usual “Gentler” Thursday hikes. We will hike at a little more than 2 miles per hour\, and will stop at intersections where we might lose stragglers. Weather is forecast to be in the low 80’s on Thursday\, so please be prepared for walking\, some climbs and descents\, and our hiking speed. If you’re unsure about whether you can make 4 miles on our route\, please feel free to contact me to discuss. \nIn some climbs / descents\, the trail has some loose rock\, and we will encounter sweet-smelling\, dehydrated horse poop – please wear appropriate hiking shoes or boots. Be sure to bring sun protection and plenty of water\, as there is little shade on our route. \nDIRECTIONS: \nExit Ventura Fwy (101) at Lynn Road\, and travel southwest 6 miles\, past the National / State Park entrance\, and past the two equestrian center driveways. The left turn into the COSCA lot is 1.5 miles past the stoplight at Reino Road. If you get to the Potrero Road descent to CSUCI\, turn around! There are water fountains\, and vault toilets with soap and sinks\, at the trailhead. \nDISCLAIMER / RELEASE OF LIABILITY\nIMPORTANT\, PLEASE READ BELOW IN ITS ENTIRETY: \nThe hike host is a volunteer and not responsible for the group. SUMMARY:Lynmere Loop from Wildwood Park (Fast Paced)
DESCRIPTION:PLEASE READ BELOW IN ITS ENTIRETY. \nKindly review the guidelines (link to the guidelines) to join our hikes.\nRestrictions apply for your safety and ours: \n\nProof of vaccination required.\nDon’t show up unless you’re shown on the “Attending” list.\nPlan on KEEPING UP with the group and completing the entire hike or please find an alternative hike that better suits your hiking level.\nYour safety is your own personal responsibility\, but the hike leader reserves the right to ask you to leave if you come unprepared.\nNo “Plus Ones” or dogs on Weekday Trailblazer hikes.\n\nLet’s do Lynmere from Wildwood for a change. We will shorten it a bit. Hoping to have some relief from the sun and heat on this hike. Bring plenty of water. \nWildwood Park in Thousand Oaks is one of the most versatile local parks there is\, with 27 miles of trails skittering through rocky cliffs\, cacti-filled desert environs\, volcanic rock\, riparian forest\, and a cool\, watery canyon. Highlights of the hike include waterfalls incorporating 40’ Paradise waterfalls along with a long creek\, Indian caves\, volcanic rock cliffs\, and wildflowers throughout. Wildwood’s archetypal western look served as the set for The Rifleman\, Gunsmoke\, and Wagon Train back in the day\, as well as the movie Spartacus. \nIt will start at the trailhead that has steps down to the Moonridge Trail. We’ll take Teepee Trail to Lynmere Trail. After completing the loop we will take Wildwood Canyon Trail\, pass by Paradise Falls\, and take our break in the picnic area. We will pick up Lizard Rock Trail and go by a water treatment plant on our way to Lizard Rock. We will either take Stagecoach Bluff Trail for some more elevation\, or catch Mesa Trail back to the parking lot. We’ll pass through various trails with bridges\, crossing streams\, and have some tree canopies for relief from the heat for approximately 7+ miles with about a 1200’ elevation gain/loss. \nDirections: \nFrom the 101 in Thousand Oaks\, turn north on Lynn Road and continue 2.6 miles to Avenida De Los Arboles\, then turn left. Continue for about a mile to the end and turn into the Wildwood parking lot on the left. \nFrom the 118\, travel west to the 23\, exit at Avenida De Los Arboles and turn right. Drive further than you remember having to drive to this trailhead (10 or 15 minutes). Turn left into the parking lot when the road ends. \nDISCLAIMER / RELEASE OF LIABILITY \nThe hike host is a volunteer and not responsible for the group. Safety should be a priority for everyone in the group. Please treat this meet-up as hiking with a group of friends. DESCRIPTION:This is an alternative to Steve’s Charmlee hike for those on the waiting list. \nAlso note that due to the heat this hike will start at 8am!! \nWe will meet at the trailhead parking area at the intersection of Wendy and Portrero Road. Pay attention as this is different than the Parking Lot where we often meet. There have been occasional reports of breakins at this trailhead\, so don’t leave any valuables in your car. See directions below. \nThis will be a big loop throughout the upper mesa. We will take a brief break about 2/3 of the way through the hike at the only place where there is any shade and a few tables. It will be a little warmer than it has been on Thursday\, so bring plenty of water\, wide hat\, sturdy shoes or boots and hiking poles if you favor them. \nTotal distance is roughly 6 miles\, with about 1000′ of elevation gain. There is little shade during this hike. \nNote that this is a gentler hike but not a beginner hike. It is a convoluted trail so we will try to keep the group together. \nDirections: \nTake Highway 101 to Thousand Oaks. Exit at Wendy Drive. Go south (towards the ocean) on Wendy all the way until it dead ends at the Santa Monica Mountains National Recreation Area. There is ample free parking on the dirt along the road. No restrooms. \nLunch Afterwards: Three Amigos on Reino Road in Newbury Park \nDISCLAIMER / RELEASE OF LIABILITY \nIMPORTANT\, PLEASE READ BELOW IN ITS ENTIRETY: \nThe hike host is a volunteer and not responsible for the group. \nOutdoor sports and other events we plan can be inherently dangerous and accidents may happen. \nIf you choose to sign up for this or any Weekday Trailblazers Meetup event\, you are releasing the Weekday Trailblazers Meetup Group\, its organizers\, and sponsors from all liability in case of possible injuries. Your personal safety depends on your own judgment and experience. You agree that you can navigate back to your transportation by yourself\, and agree to do so if you fall behind and lose track of the main body of hikers. \nAll participants must be 18 or older. \nBy now you should know the guidelines to participate in our morning hikes. SUMMARY:Charmlee Wilderness Park - Post Woolsey Fire
DESCRIPTION:Another hot day\, so let’s get closer to the coast\, and hike somewhere we haven’t been since 2017 or before – Charmlee Wilderness Park. \nAlthough you can park in the official lot for $5\, we’ll meet at the dirt strip on Encinal 50 yards uphill from the park entrance\, and bushwack through the thistle and licorice plants for a few hundred yards to an “official” trail. We’ll follow the contours of the hills to a spectacular overview of the ocean\, see an old reservoir\, and follow a nature trail back to the interpretive center and our cars\, for a total distance of 4.5 miles\, but an elevation gain and loss of 1\,000′. If you don’t want to get your lets and arms scratched up a bit\, wear long pants or gaiters for our bushwack. \nDirections\nExit Ventura Fwy (101) at Kanan\, and go south to Mulholland. Take a right on Mulholland\, but bear left as Encinal splits off. Take Encinal to Lechusa\, turn left back onto Encinal towards PCH. 50 yards before the Charmlee driveway\, park in dirt lot on the side of the road and gather there. \nPlease bring ample hydration. There is a hydration station at the end of our hike. I didn’t see much poison oak in my Sunday-morning pre-hike. \nDo NOT leave anything of value in your car\, at this or any other trailhead. \nDISCLAIMER / RELEASE OF LIABILITY \nThe hike host is a volunteer and not responsible for the group. SUMMARY:Encinal Canyon to Top of the World (or close)-Intermediate
DESCRIPTION:PLEASE NOTE START TIME 8:30 & ALLOW PLENTY OF DRIVE TIME. \nWeather should be a Hi of 78* for the day partly cloudy low winds. \nIt’s an out and back\, so go as far as you’d like and have time for. \nPlease review the guidelines to participate in our morning hikes. Here are some highlights and a link to the guidelines: \nhttps://www.meetup.com/the-weekday-trailblazers/ \nRestrictions apply for your safety and ours: \n\n\nDon’t show up unless you’re on the “Attending” list \n\n\nNo “Plus Ones” on this hike \n\n\nSign out if you are not attending \n\n\nEncinal Canyon is named for encina\, the Spanish word for the holm oak\, a lovely Mediterranean tree with holly characteristics. Holm oaks are one of the main trees used to establish truffle orchards\, but we’ll be nosing around the canyon strictly for its beauty. \nThe trail from Encinal is a smooth\, firm\, and well-traveled single track\, swooping and winding with a constant\, gentle slope. We’ll have fabulous views of the coast for much of the way. Close to the top\, we’ll take on the slightly steeper Etz Meloy Motorway\, then the last tenth of a mile is up a seldom-used trail to the isolated peak\, where we’ll both lose and catch our breath with a 360-degree view. \nFrom our perch above it all we’ll see Sandstone Peak to the west\, Simi Valley to the north\, Ladyface and Mt Baldy to the east and the Channel Islands to the south & west! \nIf you go all the way\, this is an 8 mile out and back hike\, with about 1200′ of elevation gain. If you don’t go all the way\, it’s less. \nGive yourself extra time to get to the trailhead- the roads are winding and slow. \nDirections: \nThe parking area is off the north side of Encinal Canyon Road\, almost directly across the street from the Camp 13 fire station & Rattle Snake Road. Park in the large dirt lot\, which is free. \nFrom the 101 Freeway\, turn south on Kanan Rd. Continue 6.2 miles\, then turn right onto Mulholland Hwy. After 0.9 miles\, veer left onto Encinal Canyon Rd. Drive 2.4 miles to the parking area\, on the right. \nFrom the Pacific Coast Highway – From the PCH\, turn up Encinal Canyon Road. Drive 5 miles\, then turn right onto Encinal Cyn Rd. Continue 1.1 miles to the parking area\, on the left.
