SUMMARY:Stunt Road To Saddle Peak - Intermediate 8 Miles
DESCRIPTION:Parking is limited\, please consider carpooling! \nThis hike will take us about 8 miles round-trip with 1800 feet of elevation gain on winding trails to dramatic rocky overlook with striking views of the Pacific\, Stunt Ranch State Park\, Calabasas Peak\, and Old Topanga and Cold Creek Canyons. There are also longer vistas northwest into Ventura County and east to the San Fernando Valley. The route passes through riparian forest\, open fields\, and interesting sandstone formations. \nhttps://secure.meetupstatic.com/photos/event/c/3/a/c/event_261290092.jpeg \nOur hike begins on the Stunt High Trail\, a winding single-file track that provides a varying but moderate uphill ascent in a southwesterly direction for about 2.5 miles. Early in the hike\, there are beautiful wooded areas and a small stream\, and then increasing views of the Santa Monica Mountains and Stunt Ranch State Park as we ascend. We eventually reach the Backbone Trail and soon begin an easterly ridgeline walk high above the Pacific. This route will take us along and above spectacular tilted and pocketed sandstone formations\, with dramatic views of the mountains and ocean as we proceed. There will be some very light rock-hopping. We will take a short break at Saddle Peak and return the same way. \nDirections: \nFrom the 101 – exit at the Las Virgenes Road exit and go south (toward the ocean). Drive 3 miles to Mulholland Highway and make a left turn. Continue 4 miles to Stunt Road and turn right. Go one mile\, and park and meet in the dirt pullout on the right. \nFrom the PCH – turn up Malibu Canyon Road and drive 6.5 miles to Mulholland Highway. Turn right and continue 4 miles to Stunt Road. Turn right and drive one mile. Park and meet in the dirt pullout on the right. \nDISCLAIMER / RELEASE OF LIABILITY \nIMPORTANT\, PLEASE READ BELOW IN ITS ENTIRETY: \nThe hike host is a volunteer and not responsible for the group. Safety should be a priority for everyone in the group. Please treat this meet-up as hiking with a group of friends. If you become fatigued and unable to continue the hike\, it is expected you will advise the hike host of this and return to our starting point on your own. If you are able to proceed\, it is expected that you will maintain line of sight with other members of the group at all times and help to promote the group’s safety and fitness goals. \nOutdoor sports and other events we plan can be inherently dangerous and accidents may happen. By participating in any posted event\, you are taking responsibility for your own safety and well-being. The Weekday Trailblazers Meetup Group and its organizers are not trained leaders and we do not confirm the qualifications of any of its members to lead or participate in trips. SUMMARY:Sulphur Mountain’s Trail near Ojai
DESCRIPTION:We will hike Sulpher Mountain trail on Thursday. This trail is hard to post because after it rains it is too muddy\, then it gets too hot but right now it is PERFECT. Also\, there is a new restaurant owner at the old J&M Cafe and he is really great. The restaurant is in Oak View\, just 5 minutes off the trail up Hwy. 33. It is called Noa’s. This hike goes up the Sulpher Mountain fire road\, through petroleum-scented oak forest\, through the cattle grazing ranch land at the top to the overlook above the town of Oak View. We’ll have spectacular views of the Ojai Valley\, Lake Casitas\, and the mountains to the north and everything is very green. Our gently-sloping route will be approximately 6 miles\, with about 1000’ of elevation. \nParking is limited on Sulphur Mountain Road\, and it’s well outside our typical hiking area\, so carpooling is encouraged! \nLunch afterwards at Noa’s Cafe\, a mile north on 33 in Oak View\, on the right. (formerly J&M Cafe) \nOur usual restrictions apply – no plus-ones; no dogs; only show up if you’re on the “Attending” list.

SUMMARY:Chumash Trail to Rocky Peak/Triangle
DESCRIPTION:We’ll hike up the Chumash Trail in Simi Valley to join the Rocky Peak trail. If you don’t want to continue\, feel free to turn around at the top of Chumash for about a 5.5 mile hike. For those continuing\, we’ll turn left to head to the “Triangle” where several trails meet and provide panoramic views. The hike to the triangle will be about 7.7 miles with 1600 ft gain. It’s mostly a single-track trail during the first climb with pretty views of the hills around. The final mile or so to the triangle and turn-around is fire-road. \nWe recommend you use poles as the Chumash Trail has some rocks on it. \nThe Chumash Trail showcases the unique geological timeline of the area with striking rock formations and hilly landscapes. Siltstone and sandstone reveals transformations over millions of years. Fossils of ocean invertebrates and vertebrates found along the trail are evidence of a time when the local hills were underwater. The Simi-Santa Rosa fault crosses the ridge near the intersection of the Chumash-Rocky Peak trails. \nDirections: put “Chumash Park and Trail” into your chosen map service. We will park at the end of Flanagan Drive or thereabout. From the 118\, exit Yosemite headed north\, turn right on Flanagan Dr after .4 miles\, then proceed about .8 miles to trailhead on right. \nDISCLAIMER / RELEASE OF LIABILITY\nIMPORTANT\, PLEASE READ BELOW IN ITS ENTIRETY:\nThe hike host is a volunteer and not responsible for the group. Safety should be a priority for everyone in the group. Please treat this meet-up as hiking with a group of friends. SUMMARY:Ray Miller Trail hike ~ Gentler Intermediate
DESCRIPTION:The trail is an awesome blend of ocean and mountain views in Malibu’s La Jolla Canyon. We will start from the trailhead which follows the canyon eastward\, away from the ocean. Then\, it quickly brings you back toward the ocean at a gradual incline. There’s a great lookout spot where it gives you a breathtaking view of the Pacific Coast Highway against the backdrop of the Pacific Ocean\, with sweeping views toward Mugu Rock on the west and Sycamore Cove on the east. After another peak\, you’ll start a slight decline that brings you to the fire road where we will turn around. Along the way\, we’ll be treated to magnificent sweeping views of La Jolla and Big Sycamore Canyons\, and of course\, the largest ocean in the world. On a clear day\, the Channel Islands are easily within sight\, although the marine layer has been pretty prominent this summer.\nThis is a 5-6 mile out and back hike with an elevation gain/loss of about 1000’. \nDirections: \nFrom Los Angeles\, take the Pacific Coast Highway (PCH) north\, 22 miles from Malibu Canyon Rd. Across the street from Thornhill Broome Beach is the entrance to La Jolla Canyon. It is very clearly marked. Turn right. \nFrom Ventura\, take PCH eastward\, and turn left 4 miles after Las Posas Road into La Jolla Canyon. \nHeads up: There is a parking fee in the lot (or free with state parking pass). There is free parking on PCH just a short walk to the trailhead. \nPlease review the guidelines (guidelines) to join our hikes.\nRestrictions apply for your safety and ours: \n\nDon’t show up unless you’re shown on the “Attending” list.\nPlan on KEEPING UP with the group and completing the entire hike at a moderate pace.\nPlease consider bringing mosquito spray as they may be present.\n\nDISCLAIMER/RELEASE OF LIABILITY – PLEASE READ IN ITS ENTIRETY\nThe hike host is a volunteer and not responsible for the group. El Cerro will drop us off at Via Las Brisas where we will have a 1/2 mile or so sidewalk stroll to the Potrero Ridge trail which takes us back to our cars. \nThere is little cover on this hike as it climbs up and down the ridges of Dos Vientos\, so be sure to bring plenty of water and sun protection. \nDriving Directions: From the 101 freeway\, turn south onto Wendy Drive\, towards the ocean. Continue for about 0.7 miles and turn right at Borchard Rd and head west 0.5 miles. Turn left on S. Reino Rd taking this south for about a mile. You will pass an Albertson’s supermarket\, then turn right onto Maurice Drive and right on Mountain Creek Drive. There is plenty of street parking in this residential neighborhood near the trailhead. Set your navigation app to 4140 Mountain Creek Drive\, Newbury Park\, 91320. \nDISCLAIMER / RELEASE OF LIABILITY\nIMPORTANT\, PLEASE READ BELOW IN ITS ENTIRETY:\nThe hike host is a volunteer and not responsible for the group. SUMMARY:Kanan Dume to Latigo OAB ~ Intermediate
DESCRIPTION:Please bring a flashlight or headlamp. \nJoin us as we go up and over Kanan Dume Rd and hike to Latigo Canyon Rd. This hike is only about 4.6 miles with about 900’ gain and will take us on a less-traveled but quite beautiful part of the 67-mile Backbone trail. There may be wildflowers. \nThe route begins at Kanan Dume Road\, there is a bit of a climb at first and then it levels out\, allowing us to cross over the southernmost tunnel (Tunnel 1) above Kanan Dume Road. We then proceed easterly roughly 2.3 miles and up 900 feet\, gradually winding our way up and through Latigo Canyon\, turning around at Latigo Canyon Road\, and returning to the cars. Along the hike\, you can take a short jog up to the ridgeline for spectacular Pacific Ocean views. \nThe terrain is a mix of single and double-file trail with occasional stretches of loose rock and gravel (you may want to bring trekking poles). The majority of our out and back hike is wooded and shaded canyon trails\, offering periodic glimpses of the Pacific. \nNOTE: Please review the guidelines to participate in our hikes. Here are some highlights and a link to the guidelines: \nhttps://www.meetup.com/The-Weekday-Trailblazers/about/\nRestrictions apply for your safety and ours:\nDon’t show up unless you’re on the “Attending” list\nNo “Plus Ones” on this hike\nPlan on completing the entire hike at an intermediate pace or please find an alternative hike that better suits your hiking level.\nNo dogs allowed. \nDirections: \nFrom the 101 – exit at the Kanan Road exit and drive south (toward the ocean) 7.8 miles\, going through two of the three tunnels on this road (which changes name to Kanan Dume Road). Turn right into the “Backbone Trail” parking area\, just before entering the third tunnel. \nFrom PCH – turn up South Kanan Dume Road. Drive 4.4 miles from PCH\, going through one tunnel\, and then turn left into the “Backbone Trail” parking area\, almost immediately after coming out of the tunnel. Free parking is available at the trailhead. \nDisclaimer / Release of Liability\nIMPORTANT\, PLEASE READ BELOW IN ITS ENTIRETY: \nThe hike host is a volunteer and not responsible for the group. SUMMARY:Waterfall!!! Newton Canyon to Trancas Canyon on the Backbone Trail
DESCRIPTION:I love that this description is our standard dry days one….this time\, we should see multiple falls and especially Upper Zuma Falls! Yay! We’ll detour down there as an option on the return. \nFrom the Kanan Rd trailhead\, we’ll jump on the Backbone Trail headed west\, crossing over Zuma Ridge Motorway toward Trancas Canyon. On our way there\, we’ll cross a stream (haha)\, pass under an oak canopy (a little\, anyway)\, and come out into an opening. At the opening\, look toward the sandstone formations in the distance\, and you’ll see Upper Newton Falls spilling (ah\, those were the days) through them like a ribbon. \nThis is an out and back hike for a total of 8 miles\, with 1475′ total elevation gain. A little shade\, a lot of sun\, all single track – prepare accordingly. The wounded and friends can turn around earlier….and the intrepid distance runners can go further…. \nDirections: \nFrom the 101\, go south (toward beaches) on Kanan Road about 8 miles to just before the third tunnel (T1). The parking lot is on the right. \nFrom Pacific Coast Highway\, go north on Kanan Dume Road about 4 miles and make a left turn into the parking lot immediately after going through the first tunnel. \nDISCLAIMER / RELEASE OF LIABILITY\nIMPORTANT\, PLEASE READ BELOW IN ITS ENTIRETY:\nThe hike host is a volunteer and not responsible for the group. SUMMARY:A Wilder Wildwood (NOT Gentler)
DESCRIPTION:Attention! New Trailhead. For this special extended Wildwood Park hike we will start at a different trailhead located at Canna St. and Timberwood Ave. From the parking lot adjacent to the playfield we walk UNDER Avenida de los Arboles to begin the hike. This trailhead location allows us to experience more of the beautiful Conejo Arroyo connector trail that leads into Wildwood Park. By adding this extension\, our hike will clock in at 7.25 miles and 1075 feet of gain. Please plan on 3 hours to complete this hike. \nFrom the Arroyo Conejo connector we will catch the Two Springs Trail which hooks up with Moonridge Trail adjacent to the main Wildwood parking lot. From there our hike proceeds as usual–crossing onto the Stagecoach Bluff Trail towards Lizard Rock. The Lizard Rock Trail switchbacks down to the water treatment plant where we pick up the Wildwood Canyon Trail\, crossing streams and tree canopies on the way to Paradise Falls. Upstream of the falls\, we cross over to the Arroyo Conejo connector which takes us back to our starting point. \nDirections: \nFrom the 101 in Thousand Oaks\, turn north on Lynn Road and continue 2.6 miles to Avenida de los Arboles\, then turn left. Take the first right off of Avenida de los Arboles (Canna St.). Parking is in the lot at the intersection of Timberwood Avenue & Canna St. \nFrom the 118\, travel west to the 23\, exit at Avenida De Los Arboles and turn right. Drive further than you remember having to drive to this trailhead (10 or 15 minutes). After you cross Lynn Road\, take the first right as described above. \nPlease review the guidelines (link to the guidelines) to join our hikes.\nRestrictions apply for your safety and ours: \n\nDon’t show up unless you’re shown on the “Attending” list.\nPlan on KEEPING UP with the group and completing the entire hike at a moderate pace**\,** or please find an alternative hike that better suits your hiking level.\nNo “Plus Ones” or dogs on Weekday Trailblazer hikes.\n\nDISCLAIMER/RELEASE OF LIABILITY – PLEASE READ IN ITS ENTIRETY\nThe hike host is a volunteer and not responsible for the group. SUMMARY:Wildwood Central Park Gentler Hike
DESCRIPTION:Wildwood Park is one of our most versatile local parks\, with 27 miles of trails traversing rocky volcanic cliffs\, cacti-filled desert environs\, riparian forest\, and a cool\, watery canyon. Wildwood’s western look served as backdrop for TV classics such as The Rifleman\, Gunsmoke\, and Wagon Train. \nWe will meet at Wildwood’s main parking lot. This looping hike will start at the Mesa Trail\, cross over to the Stagecoach Bluff Trail towards Lizard Rock\, then down the Lizard Rock Trail to the water treatment plant where we pick up the Wildwood Canyon Trail\, crossing streams and tree canopies on the way to Paradise Falls. Upstream of the falls\, Indian Creek (Two Springs) Trail takes us back up to the main parking lot and completes our “Central Park” loop. This hike is approximately 5 miles with about a 800’ elevation gain/loss. We may cross paths with David’s hike or they may pass us along the way. We will be shorter and slower. \nDirections:\nFrom the 101 in Thousand Oaks\, turn north on Lynn Road and continue 2.6 miles to Avenida De Los Arboles\, then turn left. Continue for about a mile to the end and turn into the Wildwood parking lot on the left. \nFrom the 118\, travel west to the 23\, exit at Avenida De Los Arboles and turn right. Drive further than you remember having to drive to this trailhead (10 or 15 minutes). Turn left into the parking lot when the road ends. SUMMARY:Ride the Two Winds (Dos Vientos) - Gentler Friendly Hike
DESCRIPTION:Note 9:00 am start time!\nThis hike will start at 9:00 because it looks like the weather is cooling off a bit. We will probably go slower than Peter’s hike. It’s usually a bit cooler in the Dos Vientos area. We will loop around the periphery of Dos Vientos Open Space\, passing Twin Ponds\, overlooking Potrero Road and the Oxnard Plain with the Channel Islands in the background. \nThis hike is about 5.0 miles with 800 feet of elevation gain. \nPace: This is a gentler friendly hike. We will go at a slightly slower pace and we will finish in about 2-2 1/2 hours. Faster hikers are welcome to join us so long as they are willing to hike at the slower pace of the group or wait at the forks on the trail. There are many confusing side trails in Dos Vientos so please plan to stay in contact with the group\, not too fast and not too slow\, plenty of forks to wait for the rest of the group. \nPlease note this trail is very exposed (no shade) and there is no water along the way. \nDIRECTIONS: From the 101 Freeway in Newbury Park\, exit at Borchard Road. Drive 3.4 miles and turn into the Dos Vientos Community Park on the right\, just after Via Ricardo (and before Via Las Brisas). Meet near the tennis courts to the left. \nIf you are coming from the NW\, exit Wendy and turn left on Wendy and then a right on Borchard to Dos Vientos Community Park. \nDISCLAIMER / RELEASE OF LIABILITY\nIMPORTANT\, PLEASE READ BELOW IN ITS ENTIRETY:\nRestrictions apply for your safety and ours:\nDon’t show up unless you’re on the “Attending” list\nUnregistered or waitlisted will be turned away\nNo “Plus Ones” on this hike\nPlan on completing the entire hike or please find an alternative hike that better suits your hiking level.\nNo dogs\nAll participants must be 18 or older\, or accompanied by a parent or legal guardian.\nThe hike host is a volunteer and not responsible for the group. SUMMARY:Los Robles trailhead\, walking down to Las Padres and up and around
DESCRIPTION:NOTE:\nPlease note this hike is September 11\, not this week. I feel it is still too hot to hike. It will be a little cooler September 11 and we will start at 8:00. This hike has a lot of trees and shade. We will begin in the parking lot at the end of Moorpark and walk down the street to the Las Padres trail (so do not turn down Greenmeadow to park\, instead park at the end of Moorpark). From there we will loop around and come back to the Moorpark trailhead via the Los Robles trail. Some hikers may want to add a mile by going to the Greenmeadow parking lot at the end of the hike and taking the trail back to Moorpark\, but you can also return to the Moorpark parking lot before that turn off. This should be around 4.5 to 5 miles with maybe 800 feet elevation gain. \n“Robles” is Spanish for oaks\, and we’ll see plenty of them on this beautiful hike. \nTrailhead Directions: From the 101 in Thousand Oaks\, turn south on Moorpark Road. Go to the end of Moorpark DO NOT turn down Greenmeadow\, just park at the end of Moorpark. . \nPlease review the guidelines to participate in our hikes.
