Go left on the Sandstone Hills until it intersects power line roads. This will be a 5+ miles round trip\, and 1300 ft elevation). Trails are wide and easy. There will be no sweep. This is an in- and-out-hike on same trail. \nDirections:\nFrom the East\, West & South – take the 101 toward Thousand Oaks. Exit at Westlake Boulevard and turn north (away from the ocean). Drive 4.1 miles and turn right on the Lang Ranch Parkway. Continue 0.3 mile along Lang Ranch Parkway. You’ll need to turn around and park across the street from the entrance to the Oakbrook Vista Trailhead (do not park on the same side of the road as the trailhead). \nFrom the North – take the 23 south toward Thousand Oaks. Exit at the Avenida De Los Arboles exit and turn left (east) on Avenida De Los Arboles. Drive 1.5 miles and turn right on Westlake Boulevard. Drive 0.2 miles and turn left on the Lang Ranch Parkway. SUMMARY:Western Plateau Hawk Canyon - Gentler Friendly
DESCRIPTION:Meet at the Conejo Canyons trailhead next to the Thousand Oaks Recycling Center on Conejo Center Drive\, near the end of Rancho Conejo. We’ll walk down the fire road to Hawk Canyon and then we will take Hawk Canyon to Five Points. From Five Points\, we will take the Western Plateau trail up to intersection with the Plateau Rim trail. We will take the Plateau Rim trail \, the Peninsula Loop trail and the Western Plateau trail back to the car. \nThe total distance of this lollipop hike is about 5 miles with approximately 800′ gain. Some of the sections are rocky; trekking poles may be advisable. \nOn this hike\, you’ll see the Conejo Airfield (honest!)\, Mt. Rex’s backside\, at least two wrecked cars\, lots of fennel\, and maybe a rattlesnake and a tarantula or two. SUMMARY:Upper Stunt High Trail To Saddle Peak ~ Gentler Intermediate
DESCRIPTION:This hike begins at Upper Stunt High Trail\, a couple hundred feet to the right on the other side of the street from the parking lot. The trail winds upward gradually over switchbacks\, giving way as the trail heads up to a dramatic rocky overlook with striking views of the Pacific\, Stunt Ranch State Park\, Calabasas Peak\, and Old Topanga Canyon. There are also longer vistas northwest into Ventura County and east to the San Fernando Valley. We will see beautiful wooded areas and increasing views of the Santa Monica Mountains and Stunt Ranch State Park as we ascend. We eventually reach the Saddle Peak Trail via Backbone Trail and soon begin an easterly ridgeline walk high above the Pacific. This route will take us along and above spectacular tilted and pocketed sandstone formations\, with dramatic views of the mountains and ocean as we proceed. There will be a little rock-scambling close to the top. We will take a short break at Saddle Peak and return back the same way. \nIt is about 5 miles round-trip with 1O00-1100 feet of elevation gain. \nDirections: \nFrom the 101 – exit at the Las Virgenes Road exit and go south (toward the ocean). Drive 3 miles to Mulholland Highway and make a left turn. Continue 4 miles to Stunt Road and turn right. Go just past the 1.94 mile marker at the entrance to the UCLA Stunt Ranch Reserve\, park and meet in the asphalt pullout on the right. \nFrom the PCH – turn up Malibu Canyon Road and drive 6.5 miles to Mulholland Highway. SUMMARY:Intermediate Hike ~ Las Virgenes to Laskey Mesa
DESCRIPTION:Welcome to the new parking area at the north end of Las Virgenes! Construction is complete\, and cars may now park diagonally off Las Virgenes near the trailheads. \nWe will be hiking northeast to Laskey Mesa\, then around the mesa to the north\, west\, and back to upper Las Virgenes\, then back to the cars for a total of 7 miles and 1\,000′ of elevation gain. There is one relatively steep section\, about 1/4 through the hike\, but it’s short. \nI’ll pre-hike this over the weekend to check for water in the creeks\, and will post a comment if I find some. \nBring sunscreen\, plenty of water\, and wear sturdy shoes and a sun hat. SUMMARY:Ride the Two Winds (Dos Vientos) - Gentler Friendly
DESCRIPTION:Come join us to hike in a section of the Dos Vientos Open Space. \nThis hike will loop around the periphery of the Dos Vientos Open Space\, passing Twin Ponds\, overlooking Potrero Road and the Oxnard Plain with the Channel Islands in the background. We will cross 2 streets along the way. \nThis hike is about 6.0 miles with about 800 feet of elevation gain. \nPace: This is a gentler friendly hike but not a beginner hike. We will go at a slightly slower pace than the Intermediate Trailblazer Hikes\, and we will finish in about 2-2.5 hours. Faster hikers are welcome to join us so long as they are willing to hike at the slower pace of the group or wait at the forks on the trail. Slower hikers need to be at least at a 2\,5 miles per hour pace. There are many confusing side trails in Dos Vientos so I ask that everyone plan to stay in contact with the group and not lose sight of those in front of you. \nPlease note this trail is very exposed (no shade) and there is no water along the way. \nDIRECTIONS: From the 101 Freeway in Newbury Park\, exit at Borchard Road. Drive 3.4 miles and turn into the Dos Vientos Community Park on the right\, just after Via Ricardo (and before Via Las Brisas). SUMMARY:Canyon Overlook Trail to Lizard Rock - Intermediate Gentler
DESCRIPTION:I pre-hiked this route on Friday as the weather is getting hot and I haven’t hiked the Canyon Overlook Trail for quite a while. It was pretty exposed\, but the ocean breeze made it comfortable.\nThe hike starts at the parking area on Hill Canyon Road and climbs Canyon Overlook Trail. The trail is a utility road and becomes a ridgeline trail with spectacular views into Hill Canyon and to Elliott Peak to the west\, and Mt Clef Butte to the east\, ending at Lizard Rock with its own amazing views.\nFollow it all the way passing Lizard Rock Trail\, then turn right and up. At the next fork\, 350 yards on\, keep right and continue going uphill. 200 feet further\, turn right to get to the Lizard Rock Trail and continue zigzagging down to Hill Canyon Water Treatment Center. Then\, we will cross over the new canyon bridge to Hill Canyon Trail and return back to our cars. \nThis hike is about 5 miles with a 900-1000’ elevation gain/loss. \nDirections: \nFrom Moorpark Road in the Santa Rosa Valley\, drive west on Santa Rosa Road for 3.7 miles\, turn left (south) on Hill Canyon Road for about 0.6 miles to the parking lot. \nFrom the 101 Freeway in Camarillo\, take exit 52 onto Santa Rosa Road and drive northeast. DESCRIPTION:After a turbulent week\, let’s give one another a hug\, then enjoy the peace and tranquility of our local mountainscape. \nWe will start in the parking lot at Rancho Sierra Vista and head up through grasslands and chaparral from the Rancho Sierra Vista trailhead\, then climb up Boney Mountain Trail for some fantastic views west to Port Hueneme\, Oxnard and the Pacific Ocean. We may see Santa Cruz Island as well as the Los Padres Mountain range if it’s not hazy. If it’s really clear\, we’ll catch a glimpse of Mount Baldy in the distance to our east. \nThis out and back hike is about 6 miles with 1100 feet of elevation gain. The hike will start in SMMNRA and pass into Point Mugu State Park and Wilderness. It’s mostly single track and fire road. Dogs are not permitted in State Park wilderness areas. \nPlease bring ample hydration. There is poison oak at the Monument; if you don’t know what it looks like\, stay on the paths and don’t stray into the woods. \nNOTE: Please review the guidelines to participate in our hikes. We will cross 3 streets along the way. \nThis hike is about 6.0 miles with 1000 feet of elevation gain. \nPace: This is a gentler friendly hike. We will go at a slightly slower pace than the Intermediate Trailblazer Hikes\, and we will finish in about 2-2 1/2 hours\, but this is not a beginner hike. Faster hikers are welcome to join us so long as they are willing to hike at the slower pace of the group or wait at the forks on the trail. SUMMARY:Fossil and Old Boney Trails - Intermediate Hike
DESCRIPTION:Join us on this sweet (maybe not so sweet!) hike that wanders through grasslands and chaparral\, down into a canyon\, then up to eye-stretching views. \nWe will follow Sycamore Canyon fire road until it intersects with the Fossil Trail. We will then take the Fossil Trail to the Old Boney Trail. The Fossil Trail features a hunk of fist-sized marine fossils smack dab in the middle of our path- we’ll actually walk on prehistory. \nIf it’s a clear day\, we’ll easily be able to see Santa Cruz Island\, as well as the Los Padres Mountain range. When we reach the Old Boney Trail\, we will make a left and continue on Old Boney until it intersects with the Danielson Fire Road. We will then take the Danielson Fire Road back to the cars. \nThis hike will be approximately 6.5 miles with an elevation gain of approximately 1600 feet. Bring poles if you favor them. \nDIRECTIONS: \nExit Ventura Fwy (101) at Lynn Road. Take Lynn Road southwest 5.25 miles to Via Goleta. Rancho Sierra Vista entrance (through the stone pillars and arch) is on the left. From Wildwood Avenue we will take the spur trail down to Santa Rosa Trail. Instead of our traditional route\, we will take the Santa Rosa Trail west (left) and hike over the eastern shoulder of Mount Clef down to the Mesa Trail in Wildwood Park. The Mesa Trail will take us west to the Box Canyon Trail\, DOWN to Rocky High Road and the hobby train yard. DESCRIPTION:This is a 4-5 mile out-and-back trip from Lynn Road to the Rosewood Trail to Angel Vista. We’ll park at the playfield near Stagecoach Inn and walk from Lynn Road on the lower Rosewood Trail\, to the usual trailhead and then on up the trail. The elevation gain/loss is about 875’ – 1000’. It is a well maintained trail with lots of foliage but relatively little shade. At the top\, the picnic table at Angel Vista offers great views of the Conejo Valley\, Hidden Valley\, the White Stallion chateaus\, the Oxnard Plains\, and (on a clear day) a couple of the Channel Islands. \nPlease review the ongoing guidelines to participate in our morning hikes. This is an IN/OUT hike for a total of 5 miles and around 800 feet elevation gain. DESCRIPTION:Let’s get out and repeat hike/walk the Calleguas Creek Bike Path along with a neighborhood trail that we can walk on without getting our feet wet or muddy. There are waterfalls in the creek during the rainy season that winds along the east side of Camarillo\, a bedroom community on the outskirts of Los Angeles. A majority of this hike takes place on a paved pathway that serves as a great connector between the city’s north and south sides and provides safe passage.\nIt is about 6 miles with a 300-400’ elevation gain/loss. \nDirection:\nExit 101 at Pleasant Valley/ Santa Rosa Rd. and head east ( away from the ocean) onto Santa Rosa Rd. DESCRIPTION:Join me on a moderate five mile loop with a total elevation gain/loss of about 800 ft. \nPlease meet at the Dos Vientos Community Park Tennis Courts near the corner of Rancho Dos Vientos and Borchard Rd. \nThis hike explores some of the neighborhood trails in the Dos Vientos area of the southwestern Conejo Valley. Although most of this route is on trails and/or dirt utility roads\, there are three street crossings\, and also a few minutes on a roadside trail. From high on the trails\, there are outstanding views of the nearby Dos Vientos residential area\, as well as distant vistas including Camarillo\, Thousand Oaks\, surrounding mountains and open space\, a secluded pond\, the Pacific coast\, and two of the Channel Islands. SUMMARY:Upper Sycamore Canyon Loop - Gentler Intermediate
DESCRIPTION:This hike starts at the Rancho Sierra Vista parking lot\, goes down to the bridge on Sycamore Canyon asphalt\, but then turns up the canyon alongside Upper Sycamore Creek. Along the way\, we’ll be in the shade of Boney Mountain while we climb\, doing a handful of easy water crossings and finding a number of wildflowers along the way. We’ll get to the Old Boney Trail\, and climb back up and out\, taking a few detours along the way. \nIt is about 5 miles with an elevation loss and gain of approximately 800’-1000’\nIf you want a little more distance\, you’re welcome to take the short excursion to the waterfall\, but there’s more poison oak there. \nIf the weather forecast calls for temperatures in the 90s before 11 am\, this hike will be canceled. SUMMARY:Parker Mesa Overlook - Intermediate Hike
DESCRIPTION:School traffic and traffic on Topanga Canyon Blvd can make the drive longer than you expect\, so please allow enough travel time! \nTopanga State Park is 36 square miles of natural wonder ensconced within Los Angeles’ city limits. Starting at Trippet Ranch\, we’ll ramble through a shady oak grove favored by mule deer and into stretches of grassland. \nBeyond the ranch\, the trail begins to rise along the ridgeline between Topanga and Santa Ynez Canyons. Giant slabs of sandstone mark the route to their former home beneath the Pacific Ocean.\nWhen the rising is done\, we’ll rest on Parker Mesa Overlook\, with the entire LA Basin stretched below us\, the majestic San Gabriel Mountains to our north\, Catalina Island to the south\, and the sweeping crescent of the Santa Monica coastline to the east. \nThis is about a 6.7 mile out and back hike\, with 1200’ feet of elevation gain. \nDirections: \nFrom the 101\, exit at Topanga Canyon Boulevard (CA 27)\, drive south over the crest of the mountains and proceed three miles to Entrada Road (not Entrado!) and turn left. SUMMARY:Rancho Sierra Vista to Ranch Overlook Loop
DESCRIPTION:Note that this is a different start than the usual Rancho Sierra Vista Parking Lot!! Read carefully!! We have not done this hike in over a year and a half. \nWe will meet at the trailhead parking area at the intersection of Wendy and Portrero Road. Pay attention as this is different than the Parking Lot where we often meet. There have been occasional reports of breakins at this trailhead\, so don’t leave any valuables in your car. See directions below. \nThis will be a big loop throughout the upper mesa. We will take a brief break about 2/3 of the way through the hike at the only place where there is any shade and a few tables. Bring plenty of water\, wide hat\, sturdy shoes or boots and hiking poles if you favor them. \nTotal distance is roughly 6 miles\, with about 1000′ of elevation gain. There is little shade during this hike. \nNote that this is a gentler hike but not a beginner hike. It is a convoluted trail so we will try to keep the group together. We will go about 2.5mph. \nDirections: \nTake Highway 101 to Thousand Oaks. Exit at Wendy Drive. Go south (towards the ocean) on Wendy all the way until it dead ends at the Santa Monica Mountains National Recreation Area. There is ample free parking on the dirt along the road. DESCRIPTION:Newton Canyon looks like it’s the most protected during Tuesday’s Santa Ana winds. However\, if there’s an active Red Flag warning\, we will cancel. Please check back before traveling Tuesday morning. \nFrom the Kanan Rd trailhead\, we’ll jump on the Backbone Trail for a cruise down into Newton Canyon. On our way there\, we’ll cross the creek\, pass under an oak canopy\, and come out into an opening. DESCRIPTION:We will start our hike near the beginning of Regal Oak Ct. on the lower Rosewood Trail\, a dirt trail heading up a shaded ravine at the base of the mountains\, and continue to the usual Rosewood trail. Rosewood trail presents a clear view over the 101 Freeway carving up the Conejo Valley. This is a preview of the panorama to come at Angel Vista\, and the view grows larger as you hike higher up the mountain. We’ll take a little roller coaster hiking trip to enjoy the Island views from the Angel Vista picnic area. This hike starts just a half mile up the road from the Boney trailhead going toward Hidden Valley. The Park Ranger closes the gate at 4 p.m.\, so please park on either side of the street along side of Potrero Rd. \nhttp://photos1.meetupstatic.com/photos/event/7/2/e/4/600_358949412.jpeg \nA nice moderately strenuous 4 1/2+ miles OAB with an elevation gain/loss of 1300 ft. and open space views of the Conejo Valley\, Hidden Valley\, and the Pacific Ocean/ Channel Islands. SUMMARY:Palo Comado to the Edge of China Flat - Gentler Friendly but not Beginner
DESCRIPTION:Palo Comado (“Burnt Stick” in Spanish) tells you a lot about the environs – frequently burned over by wildfires\, this was directly in the line of the Woolsey Fire but much of the vegetation has re-grown. \nThis is one of many routes from the Conejo Valley to China Flat. Except for one turn near the trailhead\, this gentle 900′ climb\, punctuated by a 100′ climb and descent just at the start\, is uninterrupted until we get up to the top\, where we’ll rest at the bench\, turn around\, and head back. \nThis is about 6 mile hike with about 1\,000′ of elevation gain. \nUPDATE: Please review the guidelines to participate in our morning hikes. SUMMARY:Ride the Two Winds (Dos Vientos) - Gentler Friendly
DESCRIPTION:Let’s meet at the tennis courts. \nThis hike will be in addition to Laurie’s hike\, but this will be a gentler hike. \nThis hike will loop around the periphery of Dos Vientos Open Space\, passing Twin Ponds\, overlooking Potrero Road and the Oxnard Plain with the Channel Islands in the background. We will cross 3 streets along the way. \nThis hike is about 5.0 miles with 900 feet of elevation gain. \nPace: This is a gentler friendly hike. We will go at a much slower pace than the Intermediate Trailblazer Hikes\, and we will finish in about 2-2 1/2 hours. Faster hikers are welcome to join us so long as they are willing to hike at the slower pace of the group or wait at the forks on the trail. There are many confusing side trails in Dos Vientos so I ask that everyone plan to stay in contact with the group. \nPlease note this trail is very exposed (no shade) and there is no water along the way. \nDIRECTIONS: From the 101 Freeway in Newbury Park\, exit at Borchard Road. Drive 3.4 miles and turn into the Dos Vientos Community Park on the right\, just after Via Ricardo (and before Via Las Brisas).
