SUMMARY:Lynn Road to Rosewood Trail to Angel Vista ~ gentler friendly
DESCRIPTION:This is a 4-5 mile out-and-back trip from Lynn Road to the Rosewood Trail to Angel Vista. We’ll park at the playfield near Stagecoach Inn and walk from Lynn Road on the lower Rosewood Trail\, to the usual trailhead and then on up the trail. The elevation gain/loss is about 875’ – 1000’. It is a well maintained trail with lots of foliage but relatively little shade. At the top\, the picnic table at Angel Vista offers great views of the Conejo Valley\, Hidden Valley\, the White Stallion chateaus\, the Oxnard Plains\, and (on a clear day) a couple of the Channel Islands. \nPlease review the ongoing guidelines to participate in our morning hikes. SUMMARY:Ray Miller Trail in La Jolla Canyon ~ Gentler Intermediate
DESCRIPTION:We will hike Ray Miller Trail again starting at 7:30 am to beat the heat.\nThe trail is an awesome blend of ocean and mountain views in Malibu’s La Jolla Canyon. We will start from the trailhead which follows the canyon eastward\, away from the ocean. Then\, it quickly brings you back toward the ocean at a gradual incline. There’s a great lookout spot where it gives you a breathtaking view of the Pacific Coast Highway against the backdrop of the Pacific Ocean\, with sweeping views toward Mugu Rock on the west and Sycamore Cove on the east. After another peak\, you’ll start a slight decline that brings you to the fire road where we will turn around. Along the way\, we’ll be treated to magnificent sweeping views of La Jolla and Big Sycamore Canyons\, and of course\, the largest ocean in the world. On a clear day\, the Channel Islands are easily within sight\, although the marine layer has been pretty prominent this summer.\nThis is a 5-6 mile out and back hike with an elevation gain/loss of about 1000’. \nDirections: \nFrom Los Angeles\, take the Pacific Coast Highway (PCH) north\, 22 miles from Malibu Canyon Rd. Across the street from Thornhill Broome Beach is the entrance to La Jolla Canyon. It is very clearly marked. Turn right. \nFrom Ventura\, take PCH eastward\, and turn left 4 miles after Las Posas Road into La Jolla Canyon. \nHeads up: The gate opens at 8 am. SUMMARY:Potrero Ridge from Mountain Creek Dr.
DESCRIPTION:For this adventure\, we’ll hike a lollipop loop\, starting at the Potrero Ridge trailhead off Mountain Creek Drive in Newbury Park\, climb to the top of the ridge and follow it west to the heart of the Dos Vientos trail system. From there we’ll make a clockwise loop along several trails\, starting with Sierra Vista\, then return to the cars via Potrero Ridge. About half of this hike will cover trails from our normal Dos Vientos loop hike\, but the other half we be on different trails. If is it clear we will see views of Oxnard and perhaps the islands. \nThe distance is 6 miles and the elevation gain is 1200 feet. \nThere is no cover on this hike as it climbs up and down the ridges of Dos Vientos\, so be sure to bring plenty of water and protection from the sun. \nUPDATE: Please review our guidelines to participate in our hikes. Time to return to a favorite trail once again! Let’s bag a couple peaks in our beautiful Western Plateau. We will do Elliott first\, then hike to our second peak where the power station is for our break. \nThis hike will be a fast-paced\, moderately strenuous 6 mile +/- loop with 1600+/- ft of elevation gain. The Western Plateau is now accessible by way of Hill Canyon Fire Road or from the end of Rancho Conejo Blvd.\, and is expanding with the development of new trails to be enjoyed by hikers \, bikers and horse folks. This area is a beautiful system of deeply eroded canyons\, plateaus\, and ridgelines in the northwest portion of the Conejo Valley. \nFrom the end of Rancho Rd. we will drop down into the Arroyo Conejo/Hill Canyon area and start gaining elevation via the Western Plateau Trail to our first stop at Elliott Peak\, which affords views of the inland peaks of the Topa Topas to the Ventura coastline views of the Channel islands and Camarillo. SUMMARY:Hill Canyon Santa Rosa Regional Park
DESCRIPTION:This gentler hike will be a little gentler than the second hike posted for Thursday\, just sign up for one hike. We will start at 8:00 because of the heat. We will start at the parking area in Hill Canyon\, cross the bridge over the runoff creek\, and stroll a mile before turning onto the fire road up the Western Plateau. We will go straight at the crest of the fire road and then turn on the Plateau Rim loop and then return down the Hawk Canyon Trail. There are lots of trees here. The Hawk Canyon Trail connects to Western Plateau Trail back to the parking lot. We will take a few breaks along the way to wait for everyone to catch up. This is approximately 6 miles with an elevation gain of approximately 1000 feet. \nDirections: \nFrom Moorpark Road in the Santa Rosa Valley\, drive west on Santa Rosa Road for 3.7 miles\, turn left (south) on Hill Canyon Road for about 0.6 miles to the parking lot. \nFrom the 101 Freeway in Camarillo\, take exit 52 onto Santa Rosa Road and drive northeast. SUMMARY:Sherwood Forest ~ Los Robles Scenic Loop - Gentler Friendly
DESCRIPTION:Short and sweet hike!\nThis week we’ll hike about 5 miles with 800′ of total elevation gain\, spread out nicely\, with a little bonus loop through Oak Creek Canyon. \n“Robles” is Spanish for oaks\, and we’ll see plenty of them on this beautiful\, relaxing hike. After a short street walk to get to the trailhead\, we’ll hike along Los Padres Trail through Sherwood Forest- a wooded patch shaded by huge oak trees. SUMMARY:Ray Miller Trail in La Jolla Canyon ~ Gentler Intermediate
DESCRIPTION:The Tuesday weather forecast remains hot. We will hike Ray Miller Trail again as it is the coolest area to hike. The weather forecast on Tuesday at 8 am is 63 and at 11 am\, 71. \nThe trail is an awesome blend of ocean and mountain views in Malibu’s La Jolla Canyon. We will start from the trailhead which follows the canyon eastward\, away from the ocean. Then\, it quickly brings you back toward the ocean at a gradual incline. There’s a great lookout spot where it gives you a breathtaking view of the Pacific Coast Highway against the backdrop of the Pacific Ocean\, with sweeping views toward Mugu Rock on the west and Sycamore Cove on the east. After another peak\, you’ll start a slight decline that brings you to the fire road where we will turn around. Along the way\, we’ll be treated to magnificent sweeping views of La Jolla and Big Sycamore Canyons\, and of course\, the largest ocean in the world. On a clear day\, the Channel Islands are easily within sight\, although the marine layer has been pretty prominent this summer.\nThis is a 5-6 mile out and back hike with an elevation gain/loss of about 1000’. \nDirections: \nFrom Los Angeles\, take the Pacific Coast Highway (PCH) north\, 22 miles from Malibu Canyon Rd. Across the street from Thornhill Broome Beach is the entrance to La Jolla Canyon. It is very clearly marked. Turn right. \nFrom Ventura\, take PCH eastward\, and turn left 4 miles after Las Posas Road into La Jolla Canyon. \nHeads up: There is a parking fee in the lot (or free with state parking pass). SUMMARY:Newton Canyon - Gentler Friendly Hike
DESCRIPTION:From the Kanan Rd trailhead\, we’ll jump on the Backbone Trail for a cruise down into Newton Canyon. On our way there\, we’ll cross the creek\, pass under an oak canopy\, and come out into an opening. At the opening\, look toward the sandstone formations in the distance\, and you’ll see the now-maybe-flowing Upper Newton Falls spilling through them like a ribbon. \nThis is an out and back hike at a total of about 5 miles\, with about 1000′ total elevation gain. \nThis is a gentler hike. We will go at a more moderate pace on Thursdays than a regular Tuesday Trailblazer hike\, and we’ll take a break at our turnaround. Faster hikers are welcome to come along\, with the understanding that the hike is geared toward those who want to go at an easier pace. \nDirections: \nExit 101\, then go south (toward beaches) on Kanan Road about 8 miles to just before the third tunnel (T1). SUMMARY:Gentler / Beginner: Kanan Dume to Latigo - 5 miles
DESCRIPTION:This is also a gentler hike for Thursday starting at Newton Canyon\, another group is starting at 8:30 and going down the backbone trail. We will go up and cross over Kanan and hike to Latigo. This hike was a bit overgrown last time but I am hoping they have come and trimmed it back\, but you might want to wear long pants. This hike is only 5 miles and will take us on a less-traveled but quite beautiful part of the 67-mile Backbone Trail\, which runs through the Santa Monica Mountains National Recreation Area from Will Rogers State Park in the east to Point Mugu in the west. \nThe route begins at Kanan Dume Road\, there is a bit of a climb at first and then it levels out. They have graded this part of the hike and it is easier now. Then we cross over the southernmost tunnel (Tunnel 1) above Kanan Dume Road. We then proceed easterly roughly 2.2 miles and up 600 feet\, gradually winding our way up and through Latigo Canyon\, turning around at Latigo Canyon Road\, and returning to the cars. Along the hike\, you can take a short jog up to the ridgeline for spectacular Pacific Ocean views. \nThis hike is a combination of single and double-file trails with occasional stretches of loose rock and gravel (you may want to bring trekking poles). The majority of our out and back hike is wooded and shaded canyon trails\, offering periodic glimpses of the Pacific. A deep “V” into a shaded cleft\, with another 450′ of descent and climb will complete the elevation loss and gain. \nThe total distance for this hike will be approximately 5 miles with 600 feet of elevation gain. The parking lot will be pretty full\, so if you can share a ride\, do so. \nDirections: \nFrom the 101 – exit at the Kanan Road exit and drive south (toward the ocean) 7.8 miles\, going through two of the three tunnels on this road (which changes name to Kanan Dume Road). Turn right into the “Backbone Trail” parking area at Newton Canyon\, just before entering the third tunnel. \nFrom PCH – turn up South Kanan Dume Road. Drive 4.4 miles from PCH\, going through one tunnel\, and then turn left into the “Backbone Trail” parking area\, almost immediately after coming out of the tunnel. SUMMARY:Sycamore Canyon Hike from the Ocean
DESCRIPTION:HIKE DETAILS:\nThis Tuesday hike will be gentler than the second hike that will be posted for Tuesday. Hopefully\, there will be a marine layer at the beach as we are starting at 8:30. This hike will go from the beach up to the picnic table on the fire road\, approximately 5.5 miles. Most of the hike is exposed\, but hopefully we will have some marine layer. Bring sunscreen and bug spray. No dogs. \nWe will meet in the Day Use parking lot at Sycamore Canyon Campground. It is post labor day so hopefully your passes\, if you have one\, will get you in. We will start off along the main Sycamore Canyon road and turn up to the fire road where we will climb up to the picnic table. SUMMARY:Intermediate ~ Kanan Dume to Latigo ~ 5 mile Hot Day Hike
DESCRIPTION:Looking for a short and shady hike before temperatures get too high? Join us as we go up and over Kanan Dume Rd and hike to Latigo Canyon Rd. This hike is only 5 about miles with about 900’ gain and will take us on a less-traveled but quite beautiful part of the 67-mile Backbone trail. \nPlease only sign up for one hike. \nThe route begins at Kanan Dume Road\, there is a bit of a climb at first and then it levels out\, allowing us to cross over the southernmost tunnel (Tunnel 1) above Kanan Dume Road. We then proceed easterly roughly 2.5 miles and up 900 feet\, gradually winding our way up and through Latigo Canyon\, turning around at Latigo Canyon Road\, and returning to the cars. Along the hike\, you can take a short jog up to the ridgeline for spectacular Pacific Ocean views. \nThe terrain is a mix of single and double-file trail with occasional stretches of loose rock and gravel (you may want to bring trekking poles). The majority of our out and back hike is wooded and shaded canyon trails\, offering periodic glimpses of the Pacific. \nNOTE: Please review the guidelines to participate in our hikes. SUMMARY:Upper Sycamore Canyon Loop - Gentler Intermediate
DESCRIPTION:This hike starts at the Rancho Sierra Vista parking lot\, goes down to the bridge on Sycamore Canyon asphalt\, but then turns up the canyon alongside Upper Sycamore Creek. Along the way\, we’ll be in the shade of Boney Mountain while we climb\, doing a handful of easy water crossings and finding a number of wildflowers along the way. We’ll get to the Old Boney Trail\, and climb back up and out\, taking a few detours along the way. \nIt is about 5 miles with an elevation loss and gain of approximately 800’.\nIf you want a little more distance\, you’re welcome to take the short excursion to the waterfall\, but there’s more poison oak there. \nIf the weather forecast calls for temperatures in the 90s before 11 am\, this hike will be canceled. Please check Thursday morning before you drive over.\nDirections: Take 101 Freeway to Lynn Road. SUMMARY:Overlooking Sycamore Canyon - an Intermediate\, Cooler Hike
DESCRIPTION:Just off the ocean\, Sycamore Canyon is a wide\, seemingly flat stroll among grasses\, wildflower\, and sycamore trees\, surrounded by mountains on both sides. \nRather than letting that lull you into a false sense of complacency\, we’ll take a left turn just after we start\, and hike up the southern fork of Overlook Trail to its intersection with the top of the Ray Miller Trail\, then back down to Sycamore Canyon\, and maybe up the canyon a little further for a total of 7.5 miles and 1\,500 feet of elevation gain and loss\, more or less. Leader’s choice! And we have two\, so will likely have two lengths of hikes going! \nWe’re almost certain to spy (and hear) wild parakeets along our route. Far from the petite parakeets we’re familiar with\, these birds closely resemble their parrot cousins. There are several stories floating around about their origin\, including that they were released from the old LA Zoo\, but we certainly know where they are now. \nDirections: \nGet yourself onto PCH\, near the Port Hueneme end of Malibu. You can take Kanan Rd and turn right on PCH\, or Las Posas Rd and turn left on PCH\, whichever works best for you. \nThe trailhead is located 5 miles south/east of Point Mugu off of Pacific Coast Highway (between Point Mugu and Neptune’s Net)\, in the Sycamore Canyon campground (across from Sycamore Canyon Beach). The address listed is approximate\, just to get you in the general area – turn onto Sycamore Canyon Rd. away from the ocean and head to the day use parking lot. \nParking is available in the campground for $12 (or free with a State Parking Permit)\, so you may want to carpool. They keep our trails open and maintained\, and much more. \nPlease join COSF for a live online presentation by geologist Dr. Thomas Davis\, “Trail Geology: A Look at Rock Formations\, Faults and Landscapes in the Conejo Open Space“ \nThom Davis is a researcher\, geologic map maker and author of geologic publications\, as well as an avid hiker\, WTB member\, and hike leader in the Conejo Valley. His talk will cover the rock formations you see in the open spaces\, what they mean and how they formed. \nThe presentation will be Wednesday\, September 11\, at 7:00 pm\, via Zoom. After the presentation\, there will be a moderated Q & A session for attendees. \nDr. Thomas L. Davis is a California State registered geologist and founder and director of the nonprofit Geologic Maps Foundation\, Inc. Dr. Davis has worked in and published on the geology\, tectonics and oil and gas sectors in California and Nevada\, Bangladesh\, Pakistan\, Myanmar\, Sri Lanka\, Colombia\, Venezuela and Mexico. He volunteers for the Wildlands Conservancy’s Wind Wolves Preserve providing geological advice and courses and has served as an instructor at CSUB for field geology classes. Dr. Davis is a graduate of the University of California\, Los Angeles\, and holds a PhD from the University of California\, Santa Barbara. DESCRIPTION:Let’s go to Wildwood Park through a new access route. After crossing the bridge from the parking lot\, we will start the hike following Hill Canyon trail to the newly opened “Conejo Canyon Bridge” which connects trails on either side of the creek\, Conejo Canyons and Wildwood Park. \nWildwood Park in Thousand Oaks is one of the most versatile local parks there is\, with 27 miles of trails skittering through rocky cliffs\, cacti-filled desert environs\, volcanic rock\, riparian forest\, and a cool\, watery canyon. Highlights of the hike include waterfalls incorporating 40’ Paradise waterfalls along with a long creek\, Indian caves\, volcanic rock cliffs\, and wildflowers throughout. Wildwood’s archetypal western look served as the set for The Rifleman\, Gunsmoke\, and Wagon Train back in the day\, as well as the movie Spartacus. \nWe will pass through various trails with bridges and tree canopies over approximately 5-6 miles with about a 1000’ elevation gain/loss. \nDirections: \nFrom Moorpark Road in the Santa Rosa Valley\, drive west on Santa Rosa Road for 3.7 miles\, turn left (south) on Hill Canyon Road for about 0.6 miles to the parking lot. \nFrom the 101 Freeway in Camarillo\, take exit 52 onto Santa Rosa Road and drive northeast. SUMMARY:Lindero Canyon Road to Simi Peak - Intermediate
DESCRIPTION:http://photos1.meetupstatic.com/photos/event/e/3/a/0/event_167038272.jpeg \nThis hike has some rocky parts\, but no scrambling. \nThis hike will take us on a scenic trip from the suburbs of Oak Park to the top of Simi Peak\, which overlooks both the Simi and Conejo Valleys and offers splendid views of the Santa Monica range and offshore islands to the south and west. \nOur route begins at the north end of Oak Park. We begin our ascent\, through a series of switchbacks\, a fire road\, and then a double track. Once we reach China Flats\, our remaining route is reasonably flat\, except for the last quarter mile\, as we ascend about 300 feet to reach Simi Peak and its worthwhile views. The terrain is a mix of single and double-file trail and open fire road. \nThe total distance will be approximately 6+ miles with 1400+ feet elevation gain. \nThe hike is mainly open hillside and chaparral. The weather can range from calm to windy and from warm to hot. Dress accordingly. We will stop at Simi Peak to grab a snack and enjoy the great views there\, and return to the traihead via China Flat and then the fire road back to our starting point. \nParking: \nParking is free at the Lindero Canyon Trailhead. Please do not leave anything of value in your car\, at this or any other trailhead. \nDirections: \nFrom the 101 Freeway – Exit the 101 freeway at Lindero Canyon Road and turn north toward the Simi Hills. DESCRIPTION:Happy Camp Canyon Park was once part of a large cattle ranch. It is an important wildlife corridor linking the Simi Hills with the Santa Susana Mountains. It is a lush riparian oak woodland with an intermittent stream. It’s a beautiful park right in our backyards.(Writeup modified from Jan Lyon’s hike description. Thank You Jan!) \nWe will start at trailhead next to the Rustic Canyon golf course and hike on the Happy Camp Canyon fire road to the hitching post. We will take a short break at the hitching post and then return to our cars. This will be a 5.5 mile out and back hike with approximately 900 feet gain. \nDirections:From the 101 Freeway\, take the 23 north\, exit Princeton Ave. and make a left onto Princeton. Take Princeton to the intersection with Campus Park Drive. Make a left onto Campus Park Drive and follow it to the end. When you enter the golf course\, Campus Park Drive turns into Happy Camp Canyon Road. Take Happy Camp Canyon Road to the end but do not enter the golf course parking lot. Just before you get to the golf course parking lot\, make a right into the dirt parking lot. SUMMARY:Ride the Two Winds (Dos Vientos) - Gentler Friendly
DESCRIPTION:Let’s meet at the Community Center under the solar panels in the parking lot. \nThis hike will be in addition to Peter’s hike at Happy Camp Canyon\, but we will be a little slower. \nThis hike will loop around the periphery of Dos Vientos Open Space\, passing Twin Ponds\, overlooking Potrero Road and the Oxnard Plain with the Channel Islands in the background. We will cross 3 streets along the way. \nThis hike is about 5.0 miles with 900 feet of elevation gain. \nPace: This is a gentler friendly hike. We will go at a much slower pace than the Intermediate Trailblazer Hikes\, and we will finish in about 2-2 1/2 hours. Faster hikers are welcome to join us so long as they are willing to hike at the slower pace of the group or wait at the forks on the trail. There are many confusing side trails in Dos Vientos so I ask that everyone plan to stay in contact with the group. \nPlease note this trail is very exposed (no shade) and there is no water along the way. \nDIRECTIONS: From the 101 Freeway in Newbury Park\, exit at Borchard Road. DESCRIPTION:This week we’ll do a loop around the northeastern regions of the Santa Monica Mountains National Recreation Area and the Las Virgenes Open Space. This area traverses many ecosystems\, including riparian\, chaparral\, and the rockscape from Galaxy Quest. The area is generally dry\, but very nice! \nWe’ll be hiking about 7 miles/1100’ gain over the course of 2 1/2 – 3 hours and will traverse parts of Ranch Center\, Cheseboro\, Sheep Corral and Palo Comado canyons. We’ll see Sulphur Springs\, the Baleen Wall and Shepherd’s Flat. SUMMARY:Wildwood Central Park ~ Gentler Friendly
DESCRIPTION:Because Thursday’s hike has a waiting list\, I’m adding another hike for Thursday close to\, but miles apart from Laurie’s hike. The second hike will be a little slower and with less elevation gain. Feel free to change hikes\, but don’t forget to CANCEL the hike you leave. \nWildwood Park in Thousand Oaks is one of the most versatile local parks there is\, with 27 miles of trails skittering through rocky cliffs\, cacti-filled desert environs\, volcanic rock\, riparian forest\, and a cool\, watery canyon. Highlights of the hike include waterfalls incorporating 40’ Paradise waterfalls along with a long creek\, Indian caves\, volcanic rock cliffs\, and wildflowers throughout. Wildwood’s archetypal western look served as the set for The Rifleman\, Gunsmoke\, and Wagon Train back in the day\, as well as the movie Spartacus. \nIt will start at Moonridge Trail and pass through various trails with bridges\, waterfalls\, crossing streams and tree canopies over approximately 5 miles with about a 800’ elevation gain/loss. Rather than going down from Lizard Rock\, we will go in the opposite direction and climb up to Lizard Rock and then back to the trailhead via Moonridge Trail again. \nDirections:\nFrom the 101 in Thousand Oaks\, turn north on Lynn Road and continue 2.6 miles to Avenida De Los Arboles\, then turn left. Continue for about a mile to the end and turn into the Wildwood parking lot on the left. \nFrom the 118\, travel west to the 23\, exit at Avenida De Los Arboles and turn right. Drive further than you remember having to drive to this trailhead (10 or 15 minutes).
