SUMMARY:Upper Sycamore Canyon Loop - Gentler Intermediate
DESCRIPTION:This hike starts at the Rancho Sierra Vista parking lot\, goes down to the bridge on Sycamore Canyon asphalt\, but then turns up the canyon alongside Upper Sycamore Creek. Along the way\, we’ll be in the shade of Boney Mountain while we climb\, doing a handful of easy water crossings and finding a number of wildflowers along the way. We’ll get to the Old Boney Trail\, and climb back up and out\, taking a few detours along the way. \nIt is about 5 miles with an elevation loss and gain of approximately 800’-1000’\nIf you want a little more distance\, you’re welcome to take the short excursion to the waterfall\, but there’s more poison oak there. \nIf the weather forecast calls for temperatures in the 90s before 11 am\, this hike will be canceled. Please check Thursday morning before you drive over.\nDirections: Take 101 Freeway to Lynn Road. SUMMARY:Dos Vientos Loop - 5 miles
DESCRIPTION:Join me on a moderate five mile loop with a total elevation gain/loss of about 800 ft. \nPlease meet at the Dos Vientos Community Park Tennis Courts near the corner of Rancho Dos Vientos and Borchard Rd. \nThis hike explores some of the neighborhood trails in the Dos Vientos area of the southwestern Conejo Valley. Although most of this route is on trails and/or dirt utility roads\, there are three street crossings\, and also a few minutes on a roadside trail. From high on the trails\, there are outstanding views of the nearby Dos Vientos residential area\, as well as distant vistas including Camarillo\, Thousand Oaks\, surrounding mountains and open space\, a secluded pond\, the Pacific coast\, and two of the Channel Islands. Park at Dos Vientos Community Park at Borchard Road and Via Las Brisas.

DESCRIPTION:Let’s get out and repeat hike/walk the Calleguas Creek Bike Path along with a neighborhood trail that we can walk on without getting our feet wet or muddy. There are waterfalls in the creek during the rainy season that winds along the east side of Camarillo\, a bedroom community on the outskirts of Los Angeles. A majority of this hike takes place on a paved pathway that serves as a great connector between the city’s north and south sides and provides safe passage.\nIt is about 6 miles with a 300-400’ elevation gain/loss. \nDirection:\nExit 101 at Pleasant Valley/ Santa Rosa Rd. and head east ( away from the ocean) onto Santa Rosa Rd. Use the 2nd left lane to turn left onto Adolfo Rd. and drive 0.2 miles. Turn right onto Mission Oaks Blvd. and drive 0.6 miles and turn left onto Creekside Rd. DESCRIPTION:There’s an 80% chance of rain predicted for Tuesday\, so rain cancels this hike. We will meet in the parking lot at the end of S. Moorpark and Greenmeadow Avenue. The hike will head WEST on the Los Robles trail\, turning around at the 2 1/2 mile marker. This is an IN/OUT hike for a total of 5 miles and around 800 feet elevation gain. SUMMARY:Lynn Road to Rosewood Trail to Angel Vista ~ gentler friendly
DESCRIPTION:This is a 4-5 mile out-and-back trip from Lynn Road to the Rosewood Trail to Angel Vista. We’ll park at the playfield near Stagecoach Inn and walk from Lynn Road on the lower Rosewood Trail\, to the usual trailhead and then on up the trail. The elevation gain/loss is about 875’ – 1000’. It is a well maintained trail with lots of foliage but relatively little shade. At the top\, the picnic table at Angel Vista offers great views of the Conejo Valley\, Hidden Valley\, the White Stallion chateaus\, the Oxnard Plains\, and (on a clear day) a couple of the Channel Islands. \nPlease review the ongoing guidelines to participate in our morning hikes. SUMMARY:Santa Rosa Trail and Box Canyon Loop (Alt Intermediate)
DESCRIPTION:Don’t be left behind! Please note: We are starting this Wildwood hike from Wildwood Avenue NOT Wildwood Park. \nThis intermediate loop hike will highlight the spectacular views on both sides of Mount Clef Ridge. From Wildwood Avenue we will take the spur trail down to Santa Rosa Trail. Instead of our traditional route\, we will take the Santa Rosa Trail west (left) and hike over the eastern shoulder of Mount Clef down to the Mesa Trail in Wildwood Park. The Mesa Trail will take us west to the Box Canyon Trail\, DOWN to Rocky High Road and the hobby train yard. SUMMARY:Fossil and Old Boney Trails - Intermediate Hike
DESCRIPTION:Join us on this sweet (maybe not so sweet!) hike that wanders through grasslands and chaparral\, down into a canyon\, then up to eye-stretching views. \nWe will follow Sycamore Canyon fire road until it intersects with the Fossil Trail. We will then take the Fossil Trail to the Old Boney Trail. The Fossil Trail features a hunk of fist-sized marine fossils smack dab in the middle of our path- we’ll actually walk on prehistory. \nIf it’s a clear day\, we’ll easily be able to see Santa Cruz Island\, as well as the Los Padres Mountain range. When we reach the Old Boney Trail\, we will make a left and continue on Old Boney until it intersects with the Danielson Fire Road. We will then take the Danielson Fire Road back to the cars. \nThis hike will be approximately 6.5 miles with an elevation gain of approximately 1600 feet. Bring poles if you favor them. \nDIRECTIONS: \nExit Ventura Fwy (101) at Lynn Road. Take Lynn Road southwest 5.25 miles to Via Goleta. Rancho Sierra Vista entrance (through the stone pillars and arch) is on the left. DESCRIPTION:Let’s meet at the tennis courts along with Cheryl’s group. \nThis hike will be in addition to Cheryl’s hike\, but we will go in the opposite direction. We will also be a little slower and possibly a bit shorter. \nThis hike will loop around the periphery of Dos Vientos Open Space\, passing Twin Ponds\, overlooking Potrero Road and the Oxnard Plain with the Channel Islands in the background. We will cross 3 streets along the way. \nThis hike is about 5.0 miles with 900 feet of elevation gain. \nPace: This is a gentler friendly hike. We will go at a much slower pace than the Intermediate Trailblazer Hikes\, and we will finish in about 2-2 1/2 hours. Faster hikers are welcome to join us so long as they are willing to hike at the slower pace of the group or wait at the forks on the trail. There are many confusing side trails in Dos Vientos so I ask that everyone plan to stay in contact with the group. \nPlease note this trail is very exposed (no shade) and there is no water along the way. \nDIRECTIONS: From the 101 Freeway in Newbury Park\, exit at Borchard Road. DESCRIPTION:This is a “piggyback” hike to Steve’s of the same time & destination to accommodate the waitlisted hikers. Note the Wendy Trailhead start location. (COSCA requires us to limit groups to 25) \nAfter a turbulent week\, let’s give one another a hug\, then enjoy the peace and tranquility of our local mountainscape. \nWe will most likely encounter the primary hikers but start at the south end of Wendy on Potrero Road then head up through grasslands and chaparral from the Wendy Trailhead\, then climb up Boney Mountain Trail for some fantastic views west to Port Hueneme\, Oxnard and the Pacific Ocean. We may see Santa Cruz Island as well as the Los Padres Mountain range if it’s not hazy. If it’s really clear\, we’ll catch a glimpse of Mount Baldy in the distance to our east. \nThis out and back hike is about 6 miles with 1100 feet of elevation gain. The hike will start in SMMNRA and pass into Point Mugu State Park and Wilderness. It’s mostly single track and fire road. Dogs are not permitted in State Park wilderness areas. \nPlease bring ample hydration. SUMMARY:Canyon Overlook Trail to Lizard Rock - Intermediate Gentler
DESCRIPTION:I pre-hiked this route on Friday as the weather is getting hot and I haven’t hiked the Canyon Overlook Trail for quite a while. It was pretty exposed\, but the ocean breeze made it comfortable.\nThe hike starts at the parking area on Hill Canyon Road and climbs Canyon Overlook Trail. The trail is a utility road and becomes a ridgeline trail with spectacular views into Hill Canyon and to Elliott Peak to the west\, and Mt Clef Butte to the east\, ending at Lizard Rock with its own amazing views.\nFollow it all the way passing Lizard Rock Trail\, then turn right and up. At the next fork\, 350 yards on\, keep right and continue going uphill. 200 feet further\, turn right to get to the Lizard Rock Trail and continue zigzagging down to Hill Canyon Water Treatment Center. Then\, we will cross over the new canyon bridge to Hill Canyon Trail and return back to our cars. \nThis hike is about 5 miles with a 900-1000’ elevation gain/loss. \nDirections: \nFrom Moorpark Road in the Santa Rosa Valley\, drive west on Santa Rosa Road for 3.7 miles\, turn left (south) on Hill Canyon Road for about 0.6 miles to the parking lot. \nFrom the 101 Freeway in Camarillo\, take exit 52 onto Santa Rosa Road and drive northeast. SUMMARY:Ride the Two Winds (Dos Vientos) - Gentler Friendly
DESCRIPTION:Come join us to hike in a section of the Dos Vientos Open Space. \nThis hike will loop around the periphery of the Dos Vientos Open Space\, passing Twin Ponds\, overlooking Potrero Road and the Oxnard Plain with the Channel Islands in the background. We will cross 2 streets along the way. \nThis hike is about 6.0 miles with about 800 feet of elevation gain. \nPace: This is a gentler friendly hike but not a beginner hike. We will go at a slightly slower pace than the Intermediate Trailblazer Hikes\, and we will finish in about 2-2.5 hours. Faster hikers are welcome to join us so long as they are willing to hike at the slower pace of the group or wait at the forks on the trail. Slower hikers need to be at least at a 2\,5 miles per hour pace. There are many confusing side trails in Dos Vientos so I ask that everyone plan to stay in contact with the group and not lose sight of those in front of you. \nPlease note this trail is very exposed (no shade) and there is no water along the way. \nDIRECTIONS: From the 101 Freeway in Newbury Park\, exit at Borchard Road. Drive 3.4 miles and turn into the Dos Vientos Community Park on the right\, just after Via Ricardo (and before Via Las Brisas). Construction is complete\, and cars may now park diagonally off Las Virgenes near the trailheads. \nWe will be hiking northeast to Laskey Mesa\, then around the mesa to the north\, west\, and back to upper Las Virgenes\, then back to the cars for a total of 7 miles and 1\,000′ of elevation gain. SUMMARY:Upper Stunt High Trail To Saddle Peak ~ Gentler Intermediate
DESCRIPTION:This hike begins at Upper Stunt High Trail\, a couple hundred feet to the right on the other side of the street from the parking lot. The trail winds upward gradually over switchbacks\, giving way as the trail heads up to a dramatic rocky overlook with striking views of the Pacific\, Stunt Ranch State Park\, Calabasas Peak\, and Old Topanga Canyon. There are also longer vistas northwest into Ventura County and east to the San Fernando Valley. We will see beautiful wooded areas and increasing views of the Santa Monica Mountains and Stunt Ranch State Park as we ascend. We eventually reach the Saddle Peak Trail via Backbone Trail and soon begin an easterly ridgeline walk high above the Pacific. This route will take us along and above spectacular tilted and pocketed sandstone formations\, with dramatic views of the mountains and ocean as we proceed. There will be a little rock-scambling close to the top. We will take a short break at Saddle Peak and return back the same way. \nIt is about 5 miles round-trip with 1O00-1100 feet of elevation gain. \nDirections: \nFrom the 101 – exit at the Las Virgenes Road exit and go south (toward the ocean). Drive 3 miles to Mulholland Highway and make a left turn. Continue 4 miles to Stunt Road and turn right. SUMMARY:Western Plateau Hawk Canyon - Gentler Friendly
DESCRIPTION:Meet at the Conejo Canyons trailhead next to the Thousand Oaks Recycling Center on Conejo Center Drive\, near the end of Rancho Conejo. We’ll walk down the fire road to Hawk Canyon and then we will take Hawk Canyon to Five Points. From Five Points\, we will take the Western Plateau trail up to intersection with the Plateau Rim trail. We will take the Plateau Rim trail \, the Peninsula Loop trail and the Western Plateau trail back to the car. \nThe total distance of this lollipop hike is about 5 miles with approximately 800′ gain. Some of the sections are rocky; trekking poles may be advisable. \nOn this hike\, you’ll see the Conejo Airfield (honest!)\, Mt. Rex’s backside\, at least two wrecked cars\, lots of fennel\, and maybe a rattlesnake and a tarantula or two. SUMMARY:Rosewood Trail to Angel Vista - Gentler Intermediate
DESCRIPTION:We will start our hike near the beginning of Regal Oak Ct. on the lower Rosewood Trail\, a dirt trail heading up a shaded ravine at the base of the mountains\, and continue to the usual Rosewood trail. Rosewood trail presents a clear view over the 101 Freeway carving up the Conejo Valley. This is a preview of the panorama to come at Angel Vista\, and the view grows larger as you hike higher up the mountain. Time to return to a favorite trail once again! Let’s bag a couple peaks in our beautiful Western Plateau. We will do Elliott first\, then hike to our second peak where the power station is for our break. \nThis hike will be a fast-paced\, moderately strenuous 6 mile +/- loop with 1600+/- ft of elevation gain. The Western Plateau is now accessible by way of Hill Canyon Fire Road or from the end of Rancho Conejo Blvd.\, and is expanding with the development of new trails to be enjoyed by hikers \, bikers and horse folks. This area is a beautiful system of deeply eroded canyons\, plateaus\, and ridgelines in the northwest portion of the Conejo Valley. \nFrom the end of Rancho Rd. we will drop down into the Arroyo Conejo/Hill Canyon area and start gaining elevation via the Western Plateau Trail to our first stop at Elliott Peak\, which affords views of the inland peaks of the Topa Topas to the Ventura coastline views of the Channel islands and Camarillo. SUMMARY:Intermediate Hike ~ Palo Comado / Cheseboro Loop via Ranch Center trail
DESCRIPTION:We haven’t done this hike for almost a year! \nWe’ll do a loop around the northeastern regions of the Santa Monica Mountains National Recreation Area and the Las Virgenes Open Space. This area traverses many ecosystems\, including riparian\, chaparral\, and the rockscape from Galaxy Quest. The area is generally dry\, but very nice! \nThe trailhead is where Sunnycrest turns into Doubletree\, about a mile east of Kanan Road (34°10’56.67″N\, 118°45’6.44″W) \nWe’ll be hiking about 7 miles with 1100’ gain over the course of 2 1/2 hours and will traverse parts of Ranch Center\, Cheseboro\, Sheep Corral and Palo Comado canyons. We’ll see Sulphur Springs\, the Baleen Wall and Shepherd’s Flat. The hike includes fire roads\, single-tracks\, and an exhilarating wakeup call near the beginning\, where we travel up and down 400′ over the course of the 1.1 mile Ranch Center section of the trail. \nBring sunscreen\, plenty of water\, and wear sturdy shoes and a sun hat. SUMMARY:Wildwood Central Park ~ Gentler Intermediate
DESCRIPTION:Wildwood Park in Thousand Oaks is one of the most versatile local parks there is\, with 27 miles of trails skittering through rocky cliffs\, cacti-filled desert environs\, volcanic rock\, riparian forest\, and a cool\, watery canyon. Highlights of the hike include waterfalls incorporating 40’ Paradise waterfalls along with a long creek\, Indian caves\, volcanic rock cliffs\, and wildflowers throughout. Wildwood’s archetypal western look served as the set for The Rifleman\, Gunsmoke\, and Wagon Train back in the day\, as well as the movie Spartacus. Currently\, it’s very beautiful with an abundance of wildflowers and California poppies in addition to powerful waterfalls. \nIt will start at Moonridge Trail and pass through various trails with bridges\, waterfalls\, crossing streams and tree canopies over approximately 5 miles with about a 1000’ elevation gain/loss. \nDirections:\nFrom the 101 in Thousand Oaks\, turn north on Lynn Road and continue 2.6 miles to Avenida De Los Arboles\, then turn left. Continue for about a mile to the end and turn into the Wildwood parking lot on the left. \nFrom the 118\, travel west to the 23\, exit at Avenida De Los Arboles and turn right. Drive further than you remember having to drive to this trailhead (10 or 15 minutes). SUMMARY:Ride the Two Winds (Dos Vientos) - Gentler Friendly
DESCRIPTION:Let’s meet at the Community Center under the solar panels in the parking lot. \nThis hike will be in addition to David’s hike\, but we will be a little slower with less elevation gain. \nLet’s try this hike in the counter-Clockwise direction\, just for a change. This hike will loop around the periphery of Dos Vientos Open Space\, passing Twin Ponds\, overlooking Potrero Road and the Oxnard Plain with the Channel Islands in the background. We will cross 3 streets along the way. \nThis hike is about 5.0 miles with 900 feet of elevation gain. \nPace: This is a gentler friendly hike. We will go at a much slower pace than the Intermediate Trailblazer Hikes\, and we will finish in about 2-2 1/2 hours. Faster hikers are welcome to join us so long as they are willing to hike at the slower pace of the group or wait at the forks on the trail. There are many confusing side trails in Dos Vientos so I ask that everyone plan to stay in contact with the group. \nPlease note this trail is very exposed (no shade) and there is no water along the way. \nDIRECTIONS: From the 101 Freeway in Newbury Park\, exit at Borchard Road. Drive 3.4 miles and turn into the Dos Vientos Community Park on the right\, just after Via Ricardo (and before Via Las Brisas). SUMMARY:Intermediate Hike (9:00 start): Grand Tour of the Lang Ranch Open Space
DESCRIPTION:This double-loop circumnavigation of the Lang Ranch Open Space will start at the the Albertson Fire Road (aka Motorway) trailhead (our traditional launch point for China Flats). From there we will meet up with the Long Ridge trail which connects with the Meadow View trail and climbs up and over the ridge to the Sunrise/Autumn Ridge loop. On the Autumn Ridge return we will pick up the Alapay trail which takes us back to the Albertson Motorway to complete the double loop. \nTotal mileage for our Lang Ranch adventure is about 6 miles with 1\,000 foot elevation gain/loss. SUMMARY:Wildwood Central Park - Intermediate
DESCRIPTION:We should get back before dark\, but just in case\, please bring a headlamp or flashlight. \nWildwood Park in Thousand Oaks is one of the most versatile local parks there is\, with 27 miles of trails skittering through rocky cliffs\, cacti-filled desert environs\, volcanic rock\, riparian forest\, and a cool\, watery canyon. Highlights of the hike include waterfalls incorporating 40’ Paradise waterfalls along with a long creek\, Indian caves\, volcanic rock cliffs\, and wildflowers throughout. Wildwood’s archetypal western look served as the set for The Rifleman\, Gunsmoke\, and Wagon Train back in the day\, as well as the movie Spartacus. \nIt will start at the trailhead that has steps down to the Moonridge Trail. We’ll take the trail down by the teepee to Wildwood Canyon Trail\, pass by Paradise Falls\, pick up Lizard Rock Trail\, and go by a water treatment plant on our way to Lizard Rock. We’ll take Stagecoach Bluff Trail for some more elevation\, and either catch Mesa Trail or Moonridge Trail back to the parking lot. We’ll pass through various trails with bridges\, crossing streams\, and have some tree canopies for approximately 5 miles with about a 1200’ elevation gain/loss. We will take a break somewhere in our travels. \nDirections: \nFrom the 101 in Thousand Oaks\, turn north on Lynn Road and continue 2.6 miles to Avenida De Los Arboles\, then turn left. Continue for about a mile to the end and turn into the Wildwood parking lot on the left. \nFrom the 118\, travel west to the 23\, exit at Avenida De Los Arboles and turn right. Drive further than you remember having to drive to this trailhead (10 or 15 minutes). SUMMARY:** 9:00 START! Newton Canyon to Trancas Canyon
DESCRIPTION:NOTE THE 9:00 start time!! \nFrom the Kanan Rd trailhead\, we’ll jump on the Backbone Trail headed west\, crossing over Zuma Ridge Motorway toward Trancas Canyon. On our way there\, we’ll cross a stream (haha)\, pass under an oak canopy (a little\, anyway)\, and come out into an opening. At the opening\, look toward the sandstone formations in the distance\, and you’ll see Upper Newton Falls spilling (ah\, those were the days) through them like a ribbon. \nThis is an out and back hike for a total of 8 miles\, with 1475′ total elevation gain. A little shade\, a lot of sun\, all single track – prepare accordingly. The wounded and friends can turn around earlier…. \nDirections: \nFrom the 101\, go south (toward beaches) on Kanan Road about 8 miles to just before the third tunnel (T1). SUMMARY:China Flat & Simi Peak ~ Gentler Intermediate
DESCRIPTION:This hike begins from the top of King James Court\, a cul-de-sac off Lindero Canyon Road. Begin up the trail at the top of the road\, passing through a gate by a sign that reads “China Flat Trail Head.” It will pass through the branch of Suicide Trail and another branch of China Flat Trail. Stay to the left as Simi Peak Trail heads west\, gradually ascending through more oak savanna on China Flat. As you ascend\, look over your shoulder and you should be able to spot the San Gabriel Mountains to the east of the Simi Hills. On clear winter days\, the snowy top of Mount Baldy will be hard to miss. The summit of Simi Peak has views in every direction. The Santa Monica Mountains stand tall on the far side of the valley\, stretching to the east and west about as far as can be seen.\nThis hike is about 5 1/2 miles out and back with approximately 1200’ of elevation gain/loss. \nDirection: Take the 101 Freeway to exit 39 in Westlake Village and head north on Lindero Canyon Road. Drive 3.7 miles and turn left up King James Court (which is 0.9 miles past Kanan Road).
