Among other topics\, Stangel will demonstrate humane hazing techniques and showcase various backyard wildlife deterrents during her show-and-tell. \nThis is your chance to get your coyote questions answered\, including why they seem to watch you and whether your fences will keep them out. Ever wondered why they yip together? Learn the truth from Stangel. \nDana Stangel is a credentialed biology teacher and an urban wildlife specialist. SUMMARY:Calleguas Creek Bike Path/Trail Walking
DESCRIPTION:Let’s get out and repeat hike/walk the Calleguas Creek Bike Path along with a neighborhood trail that we can walk on without getting our feet wet or muddy. There are waterfalls in the creek during the rainy season that winds along the east side of Camarillo\, a bedroom community on the outskirts of Los Angeles. A majority of this hike takes place on a paved pathway that serves as a great connector between the city’s north and south sides and provides safe passage.\nIt is about 6 miles with a 300-400’ elevation gain/loss. \nDirection:\nExit 101 at Pleasant Valley/ Santa Rosa Rd. and head east ( away from the ocean) onto Santa Rosa Rd. Use the 2nd left lane to turn left onto Adolfo Rd. and drive 0.2 miles. Turn right onto Mission Oaks Blvd. and drive 0.6 miles and turn left onto Creekside Rd. SUMMARY:Sulphur Mountain’s Majesty
DESCRIPTION:Unaffected by the horrific fires in the Santa Monica Mountains\, the Ojai foothills offer a calm alternative. \nThis route ascends from the Girl Scout camp\, through petroleum-scented oak forest\, through the cattle grazing ranch land at the top to the overlook above the town of Oak View. We’ll have spectacular views of the Ojai Valley\, Lake Casitas\, and the mountains to the north. Our gently-sloping route will be approximately 6 miles\, with about 500’ of elevation. \nParking is limited on Sulphur Mountain Road\, and it’s well outside our typical hiking area\, so carpooling is encouraged! \nLunch afterwards at Om Thai Cafe\, a mile north on 33\, on the right. \nOur usual restrictions apply – no plus-ones; no dogs; only show up if you’re on the “Attending” list.

SUMMARY:Upper Sycamore Canyon Loop - Gentler Hike. Red Flag Warning Cancels
DESCRIPTION:This hike starts at the Rancho Sierra Vista parking lot\, goes down to the bridge on Sycamore Canyon asphalt\, but then turns up the canyon alongside Upper Sycamore Creek. Along the way\, we’ll be in the shade of Boney Mountain while we climb\, doing a handful of easy water crossings and (if we’re lucky this late in the season)_ finding a number of wildflowers along the way. We’ll get to the Old Boney Trail\, and climb back up and out\, taking a few detours along the way. \nIt is about 5 miles with an elevation loss and gain of approximately 750’. If you want a little more distance\, you’re welcome to take the short excursion to the waterfall\, but there’s more poison oak there. \nIf the weather forecast continues to call for a red flag warning\, the hike will be canceled. Please check Thursday morning before you drive over. \nDirections: Take 101 Freeway to Lynn Road. Go south 5.5 miles to the wood and stone archway for Rancho Sierra Vista\, and drive all the way in to the restrooms (the innermost parking lot). We will take the Wendy-Satwiwa Connector Trail to the Old Cabin Trail to the Danielson Monument\, where will have an optional snack share. We will return on the same trail maybe in the dark\, so bring a flashlight.\n\nHow to get there: From 101 (Ventura Freeway)\, exit at the Wendy Dr and head south (towards the ocean). SUMMARY:Say Cheeseboro Canyon to Palo Comado Canyon ~ Intermediate Hike
DESCRIPTION:http://photos4.meetupstatic.com/photos/event/4/e/0/4/event_85459972.jpeg \nTucked along the 101 in Agoura is the northernmost section of the Santa Monica Mountains National Recreation Area. Echoing its not-so-distant past of ranching\, the rolling hills and shady canyons are popular with equestrians. Before the ranchers\, Chumash Indians and grizzly bears tromped out the slender trails in the native grasses that became today’s open fire roads. Rabbits\, bobcats\, owls\, hawks\, deer\, and coyotes still call the sycamores\, oaks\, streams\, and sulfur springs of the canyons home. Cheeseboro Canyon is home to the largest concentration of birds of prey outside of Alaska\, as well as the Valley Oak\, the largest oak trees in the US (possibly the world!). \nhttp://photos2.meetupstatic.com/photos/event/4/e/2/c/event_85460012.jpeg \nOur 7 mile hike will carve a loop pattern out of the network of trails and connect Cheeseboro Canyon to adjacent Palo Comado Canyon before returning us to our cars. SUMMARY:Rancho Sierra Vista/Satwiwa trail loops hike ~ Gentler Intermediate
DESCRIPTION:“Satwiwa” is Chumashan and directly translates to “the bluffs\,” which can also translate to “higher places\,” and is the Chumashan name used for a former village near the current culture center. The Ranch Overlook Trail extends from just west of the culture center to the Palomino Trail in the Rancho Potrero Open Space. \nhttps://www.conejovalleyguide.com/dosomethingblog/ranch-overlook-trail-in-rancho-sierra-vistasatwiwa-in-newbury-park \nThis will be an 8-figure hike. We will start from the parking lot and continue to the Ranch Overlook Trail as we turn left at the juncture of Sycamore Canyon Fire Road. The east trail is moderately flat and you will see bluffs to the west leading to a moderate hill. At the peak\, you’ll have awesome views of Big Sycamore Canyon Trail\, which descend from Satwiwa to the Pacific Ocean along a historic Chumash trade route\, as well as towards Boney. We will continue hiking the Satwiwa Loop Trail on the other side when we return to the Sycamore Canyon Fire Road and head back to the car. \nThis is about 5 miles with an elevation gain/loss of approximately 1000’. \nDirections: \nExit 101 at Lynn Road in Thousand Oaks. Go west for 5.5 miles\, and turn left\, under the Rancho Sierra Vista arch\, into the National Park. It will be 5 miles with about 900+ elevation gain. \nFrom the Kanan Rd trailhead\, we’ll jump on the Backbone Trail for a cruise down into Newton Canyon. On our way there\, we’ll cross the creek\, pass under an oak canopy\, and come out into an opening. DESCRIPTION:This hike circles the trails between South Ranch and Conejo Ridge. This is about 6 miles (1000 foot elevation gain) lollipop. We will start at the trailhead at Triunfo Park’s back (2nd) parking lot\, go up to the Los Robles trail and turn left on the Whitehorse trail. We will meet in the parking lot at the end of S. Moorpark and Greenmeadow Avenue. The hike will head WEST on the Los Robles trail\, turning around at the 2 1/2 mile marker. SUMMARY:Encinal Canyon to Top of the World ~ Intermediate Hike
DESCRIPTION:Encinal Canyon is named for encina\, the Spanish word for the holm oak\, a lovely Mediterranean tree with holly characteristics. Holm oaks are one of the main trees used to establish truffle orchards\, but we’ll be nosing around the canyon strictly for its beauty. \nThe trail from Encinal is a smooth\, firm\, and well-traveled single track\, swooping and winding with a constant\, gentle slope. We’ll have fabulous views of the coast for much of the way. Close to the top\, we’ll take on the slightly steeper Etz Meloy Motorway\, then the last tenth of a mile is up a seldom-used trail to the isolated peak\, where we’ll both lose and catch our breath with a 360-degree view. \nFrom our perch above it all we’ll see Sandstone Peak to the west\, Simi Valley to the north\, Ladyface and Mt Baldy to the east and the Channel Islands to the south and west. \nThis is a 8 mile out and back hike\, with about 1200′ of elevation gain. \nNOTE: Please review the guidelines to participate in our hikes. SUMMARY:Sycamore Canyon Hike from the Ocean
DESCRIPTION:HIKE DETAILS:\nLet’s use our 2024 passes one more time. This Tuesday hike will be a bit gentler. This hike will go from the beach up to the picnic table on the fire road\, approximately 5.5 miles. Most of the hike is exposed\, but hopefully we will have some marine layer. No dogs. \nWe will meet in the Day Use parking lot at Sycamore Canyon Campground. We will start off along the main Sycamore Canyon road and turn up to the fire road where we will climb up to the picnic table. We will then follow the fire road back down to the parking lot\, so out and back. \nDirections: \nWe will be meeting at the Sycamore Canyon Campground and day use parking area on Pacific Coast hwy. This trailhead and parking area is about a mile south from the La Jolla Canyon Parking area where we go to hike the Ray Miller Trail and just across from the campground. \nParking is available in the campground for $12 (or free with a State Parking Permit). SUMMARY:Hill Canyon Santa Rosa Regional Park
DESCRIPTION:This is a gentler hike. We will start at the parking area in Hill Canyon\, cross the bridge over the runoff creek\, and stroll a mile before turning onto the fire road up the Western Plateau. We will go straight at the crest of the fire road and then turn on the Plateau Rim loop and then return down the Hawk Canyon Trail. The Hawk Canyon Trail connects to Western Plateau Trail back to the parking lot. We will take a few breaks along the way to wait for everyone to catch up. This is approximately 6 miles with an elevation gain of approximately 1000 feet. Not sure if the parking lot we usually used is still closed for construction work\, if so park near the bathrooms. \nDirections: \nFrom Moorpark Road in the Santa Rosa Valley\, drive west on Santa Rosa Road for 3.7 miles\, turn left (south) on Hill Canyon Road for about 0.6 miles to the parking lot. \nFrom the 101 Freeway in Camarillo\, take exit 52 onto Santa Rosa Road and drive northeast. DESCRIPTION:“Satwiwa” is Chumashan and directly translates to “the bluffs\,” which can also translate to “higher places\,” and is the Chumashan name used for a former village near the current culture center. We will start from the parking lot and continue to the Ranch Overlook Trail as we turn left at the juncture of Sycamore Canyon Fire Road. At the peak\, you’ll have awesome views of Big Sycamore Canyon Trail\, which descend from Satwiwa to the Pacific Ocean along a historic Chumash trade route\, as well as towards Boney. DESCRIPTION:Let’s meet at the tennis courts. \nThis hike will be in addition to Laurie’s hike\, but this will be a gentler hike. \nThis hike will loop around the periphery of Dos Vientos Open Space\, passing Twin Ponds\, overlooking Potrero Road and the Oxnard Plain with the Channel Islands in the background. We will cross 3 streets along the way. \nThis hike is about 5.0 miles with 900 feet of elevation gain. \nPace: This is a gentler friendly hike. We will go at a much slower pace than the Intermediate Trailblazer Hikes\, and we will finish in about 2-2 1/2 hours. Faster hikers are welcome to join us so long as they are willing to hike at the slower pace of the group or wait at the forks on the trail. DESCRIPTION:Palo Comado (“Burnt Stick” in Spanish) tells you a lot about the environs – frequently burned over by wildfires\, this was directly in the line of the Woolsey Fire but much of the vegetation has re-grown. \nThis is one of many routes from the Conejo Valley to China Flat. DESCRIPTION:From the Kanan Rd trailhead\, we’ll jump on the Backbone Trail headed west\, crossing over Zuma Ridge Motorway toward Trancas Canyon. On our way there\, we’ll cross a stream (haha)\, pass under an oak canopy (a little\, anyway)\, and come out into an opening. At the opening\, look toward the sandstone formations in the distance\, and you’ll see Upper Newton Falls spilling (ah\, those were the days) through them like a ribbon. \nThis is an out and back hike for a total of 8 miles\, with 1475′ total elevation gain. DESCRIPTION:This out-and-back hike is about 5 miles with an elevation gain/loss of 1000’ -1200’ provides a great overview of the Thousand Oaks area\, the ocean and the western Santa Monica Mountains. The first portion is a narrow trail that zigzags its way up and if you reach the top\, you’ll be enjoying 360 degree views toward Boney Mountain on the west\, Lang Ranch and Woodridge trails on the north and more. \nDirections: \nFrom 101: Exit at Westlake Boulevard and turn north (away from the ocean). DESCRIPTION:We will start our hike near the beginning of Regal Oak Ct. on the lower Rosewood Trail\, a dirt trail heading up a shaded ravine at the base of the mountains\, and continue to the usual Rosewood trail. Rosewood trail presents a clear view over the 101 Freeway carving up the Conejo Valley. This is a preview of the panorama to come at Angel Vista\, and the view grows larger as you hike higher up the mountain. DESCRIPTION:Newton Canyon looks like it’s the most protected during Tuesday’s Santa Ana winds. However\, if there’s an active Red Flag warning\, we will cancel. Please check back before traveling Tuesday morning. \nFrom the Kanan Rd trailhead\, we’ll jump on the Backbone Trail for a cruise down into Newton Canyon. On our way there\, we’ll cross the creek\, pass under an oak canopy\, and come out into an opening. SUMMARY:Rancho Sierra Vista to Ranch Overlook Loop
DESCRIPTION:Note that this is a different start than the usual Rancho Sierra Vista Parking Lot!! Read carefully!! We have not done this hike in over a year and a half. \nWe will meet at the trailhead parking area at the intersection of Wendy and Portrero Road. Pay attention as this is different than the Parking Lot where we often meet. There have been occasional reports of breakins at this trailhead\, so don’t leave any valuables in your car. See directions below. \nThis will be a big loop throughout the upper mesa. We will take a brief break about 2/3 of the way through the hike at the only place where there is any shade and a few tables. Bring plenty of water\, wide hat\, sturdy shoes or boots and hiking poles if you favor them. \nTotal distance is roughly 6 miles\, with about 1000′ of elevation gain. There is little shade during this hike. \nNote that this is a gentler hike but not a beginner hike. It is a convoluted trail so we will try to keep the group together. We will go about 2.5mph. \nDirections: \nTake Highway 101 to Thousand Oaks. Exit at Wendy Drive. SUMMARY:Parker Mesa Overlook - Intermediate Hike
DESCRIPTION:School traffic and traffic on Topanga Canyon Blvd can make the drive longer than you expect\, so please allow enough travel time! \nTopanga State Park is 36 square miles of natural wonder ensconced within Los Angeles’ city limits. Starting at Trippet Ranch\, we’ll ramble through a shady oak grove favored by mule deer and into stretches of grassland. \nBeyond the ranch\, the trail begins to rise along the ridgeline between Topanga and Santa Ynez Canyons. Giant slabs of sandstone mark the route to their former home beneath the Pacific Ocean.\nWhen the rising is done\, we’ll rest on Parker Mesa Overlook\, with the entire LA Basin stretched below us\, the majestic San Gabriel Mountains to our north\, Catalina Island to the south\, and the sweeping crescent of the Santa Monica coastline to the east. \nThis is about a 6.7 mile out and back hike\, with 1200’ feet of elevation gain. \nDirections: \nFrom the 101\, exit at Topanga Canyon Boulevard (CA 27)\, drive south over the crest of the mountains and proceed three miles to Entrada Road (not Entrado!) and turn left. Keep to the left at every opportunity until you reach the park’s main parking lot (about one mile) \nFrom the Pacific Coast Highway\, travel north on Topanga Canyon Boulevard\, pass the post office at the center of “town\,” then turn right on Entrada Road. SUMMARY:Upper Sycamore Canyon Loop - Gentler Intermediate
DESCRIPTION:This hike starts at the Rancho Sierra Vista parking lot\, goes down to the bridge on Sycamore Canyon asphalt\, but then turns up the canyon alongside Upper Sycamore Creek. Along the way\, we’ll be in the shade of Boney Mountain while we climb\, doing a handful of easy water crossings and finding a number of wildflowers along the way. We’ll get to the Old Boney Trail\, and climb back up and out\, taking a few detours along the way. \nIt is about 5 miles with an elevation loss and gain of approximately 800’-1000’\nIf you want a little more distance\, you’re welcome to take the short excursion to the waterfall\, but there’s more poison oak there. \nIf the weather forecast calls for temperatures in the 90s before 11 am\, this hike will be canceled. Please check Thursday morning before you drive over.\nDirections: Take 101 Freeway to Lynn Road. SUMMARY:Dos Vientos Loop - 5 miles
DESCRIPTION:Join me on a moderate five mile loop with a total elevation gain/loss of about 800 ft. \nPlease meet at the Dos Vientos Community Park Tennis Courts near the corner of Rancho Dos Vientos and Borchard Rd. \nThis hike explores some of the neighborhood trails in the Dos Vientos area of the southwestern Conejo Valley. Although most of this route is on trails and/or dirt utility roads\, there are three street crossings\, and also a few minutes on a roadside trail. From high on the trails\, there are outstanding views of the nearby Dos Vientos residential area\, as well as distant vistas including Camarillo\, Thousand Oaks\, surrounding mountains and open space\, a secluded pond\, the Pacific coast\, and two of the Channel Islands. Park at Dos Vientos Community Park at Borchard Road and Via Las Brisas.

DESCRIPTION:Let’s get out and repeat hike/walk the Calleguas Creek Bike Path along with a neighborhood trail that we can walk on without getting our feet wet or muddy. There are waterfalls in the creek during the rainy season that winds along the east side of Camarillo\, a bedroom community on the outskirts of Los Angeles. A majority of this hike takes place on a paved pathway that serves as a great connector between the city’s north and south sides and provides safe passage.\nIt is about 6 miles with a 300-400’ elevation gain/loss. \nDirection:\nExit 101 at Pleasant Valley/ Santa Rosa Rd. and head east ( away from the ocean) onto Santa Rosa Rd. Use the 2nd left lane to turn left onto Adolfo Rd. and drive 0.2 miles. Turn right onto Mission Oaks Blvd. and drive 0.6 miles and turn left onto Creekside Rd.
