SUMMARY:Dos Vientos -- Ride the Two Winds\, a Gentler Friendly Hike.
DESCRIPTION:Please note this hike begins at 9:00 am! \nRestrictions apply for your safety and ours: \n\nDon’t show up unless you’re on the “Attending” list\nUnregistered or waitlisted will be turned away\nNo “Plus Ones” on this hike\n\nThis hike will loop around the periphery of Dos Vientos\, passing Twin Ponds\, overlooking Potrero Road and the Oxnard Plain with the Channel Islands in the background. We will cross 2 streets along the way. \nThis hike is about 5.0 miles with 1000 feet of elevation gain. \nPace: This is a gentler friendly hike. We will go at a slightly slower pace than the Intermediate Trailblazer Hike\, and we will finish in 2 1/2 hours. Faster hikers are welcome to join us so long as they are willing to hike at the slower pace of the group or wait at the forks on the trail. There are many confusing side trails in Dos Vientos so I will mark the trail if necessary\, but I ask that everyone plan to stay in contact with the group. \nPlease note this trail is very exposed (no shade) and there is no water along the way. \nDIRECTIONS: From the 101 Freeway in Newbury Park\, exit at Borchard Road. Drive 3.4 miles and turn into the Dos Vientos Community Park on the right\, just after Via Ricardo (and before Via Las Brisas). Meet by the tennis courts to the left. \nIf you are coming from the NW\, exit Wendy and turn left on Wendy and then a right on Borchard to Dos Vientos Community Park. \nDISCLAIMER / RELEASE OF LIABILITY \nIMPORTANT\, PLEASE READ BELOW IN ITS ENTIRETY: \nThe hike host is a volunteer and not responsible for the group. Safety should be a priority for everyone in the group. Please treat this meet-up as hiking with a group of friends. If you become fatigued and unable to continue the hike\, it is expected you will advise the hike host of this and return to our starting point on your own. If you are able to proceed\, it is expected that you will maintain line of sight with other members of the group at all times and help to promote the group’s safety and fitness goals. \nOutdoor sports and other events we plan can be inherently dangerous and accidents may happen. By participating in any posted event\, you are taking responsibility for your own safety and well-being. The Weekday Trailblazers Meetup Group and its organizers are not trained leaders and we do not confirm the qualifications of any of its members to lead or participate in trips. All participants take full responsibility for their own actions. \nIf you choose to sign up for this or any Weekday Trailblazers Meetup event\, you are releasing the Weekday Trailblazers Meetup Group and its organizers from all liability in case of possible injuries. Your personal safety depends on your own judgment and experience. \n** Anyone 18 yrs. or younger must be accompanied by a parent or legal guardian. \n** As usual\, no “Plus Ones.” Get your friends to sign up and register for the hike – it’s not that hard!

SUMMARY:BIKE VENTURA HARBOR TO HOBSON FOLLOWED BY CONCERT
DESCRIPTION:THE WEEKDAY TRAILBLAZERS BIKE LADY IS BACK!\nRIDE COAST FROM VENTURA HARBOR TO HOBSON\nTHEN PICNIC AND ROCK ‘N ROLL TO THE VANISE TERRY BAND \nBike ride meets and rolls from the Village at the Ventura Harbor at 9:00 AM for about 28 miles of mostly flat cycling along the coast with a mix of bike lanes and bike paths as our trails. \nRoute will take us around the Harbor\, past the Ventura Pier\, up the Omer Rains Bike Path then continue on PCH to Hobson Beach Park. We’ll have our snack/rest break at Hobson then return to the Harbor. \nBIKE ROUTE MAP : https://goo.gl/maps/CGnKu7R6ffBkYD2w8\nLink for planning purposes. Our route may be a bit different from Google’s and we may use more residential streets. Google underestimates elevation gain\, expect about 350 feet. Time estimate assumes faster speed and no break. Intermediate level pace and distance. Too fast and too far for beginners. \nTHE CONCERT\nMy friend Vanise Terry and her band will be rocking the Harbor from Noon to 3:00 PM. She has a great voice and personality. I think you will enjoy her. Vanise and her band perform at many local brew pubs\, clubs and tasting rooms. I anticipate the band will play some classic rock with perhaps some country and contemporary songs. Check out Vanise at http://vanisemusic.com/ Bring your own chair\, hat and a picnic lunch. You can also buy food at the Harbor. \nFYI\, there is also a Mental Wellness Fest at the harbor from 10-5. That event will be in the lawn area. If you want even more music\, there’s a blue grass band in that section at 3. You are welcome to check out the festival too. It will be a busy day at the harbor. \nDO NOT LEAVE ANYTHING OF VALUE IN YOUR CAR. \nWHAT TO BRING: \nFOR YOUR BIKE: Bike in good working order–chain lubed\, gears shift easily\, seat at right height\, tires pumped up and brakes checked\, extra air in MTB tires. Please have your bike ready BEFORE time to leave at 9:00 AM. Road bikes and hybrids best. E-bikes OK\, but ALL riders are expected to stay with the group\, NO using throttle to go out ahead or lagging behind then racing to catch up or pass. Flats happen. You MUST bring a spare tube\, patch kit\, tire levers. If you don’t have a frame pump or CO2 system\, get one before the ride. If your bike requires special tools\, you must bring them and know how to use them. Host will not be your bike mechanic. If you are staying for the concert\, please make sure you can lock your bike to your rack or put it in your vehicle. \nFOR YOU: Helmets are MANDATORY. Be sure to bring water/hydration and snacks. Bike gloves and padded shorts or leggings\, bright tops or jacket. Any personal items you may need\, ID and emergency contact info. Cell phone. Cash in case you need to pay for a ride back to your car or are staying for lunch and want to get buy something to eat at the harbor. Bring a chair for the concert\, some may want to change clothes. \nAll Weekday Trailblazer meet up rules apply along with biking rules. Please review current WTB protocols on About Page before attending. Do not show up unless you are on the attending list. All riders must be over 18. \nDISCLAIMERS/WARNINGS: As with any other activity\, you are responsible for your own safety and for following all laws including the vehicle code. Bike riding can be dangerous and you are assuming the risks\, including but not limited to injury and damage\, to you and your bike. Event host is a volunteer and is not responsible for you\, your bike\, or making any repairs to your bike. Think of this outing as riding with friends. If your bike breaks down\, or you cannot complete the ride\, you are responsible for getting you and your bike back to the starting point. Bring money for a taxi if needed. Portions of this ride are in bike lanes on roads with fast moving traffic. Ride alertly\, use hand signals and/or verbal warnings\, courtesy and common sense. No talking/texting on cell phones while we are rolling. No music playing in headphones/ear buds or broadcasting from your phone or other device on your bike. Safety requires that you must be able to hear traffic and other riders. \nPlease consider the condition and abilities of both you and your bike carefully before signing up for the event. \nAny questions\, please message the leader or put a comment in the discussion section. If you only want to bike or only attend the concert\, please let host know. \nHost does NOT get email on cell. Cancel BEFORE 7:30 AM event day.

SUMMARY:Lynnmere Loop from Camino Magenta - a Gentler (not Beginner) Hike
DESCRIPTION:Instead of our usual starting point at the Conejo Playfields\, this shorter\, gentler hike will start at the top of Camino Magenta\, in the beautiful unincorporated Lynn Ranch neighborhood surrounded by Thousand Oaks. \nWe’ll do a loop around the gated Lynnmere community and wind up back at our starting point about 5 miles and about 850′ later. Along the way\, we’ll see the nifty 60’s Teledyne Scientific & Imaging building\, Amgen and the Biotech corridor in the distance to the west\, and Montclef / Wildwood below us as we loop around the north side. There are two street crossings\, both at gated entrances\, so we won’t have to worry too much about auto traffic. \nIn some climbs / descents\, the trail has some loose rock – please wear appropriate hiking shoes or boots. \nDIRECTIONS: \nExit Ventura Fwy (101) at Lynn Road\, and travel northeast 1.2 miles to Camino Manzanas\, the fourth left-hand turn. Take Camino Manzanas 0.3 miles to Camino Magenta\, and turn right. Park in any legal spot between the intersection and the trailhead at the top of the hill. Please be nice; avoid turning around in residents’ driveways if at all possible. \nDISCLAIMER / RELEASE OF LIABILITY\nIMPORTANT\, PLEASE READ BELOW IN ITS ENTIRETY: \nThe hike host is a volunteer and not responsible for the group. \nPlease review our guidelines to participate in our hikes. We are requiring proof of vaccination to join a hike. Restrictions apply for your safety and ours: \n\nDon’t show up unless you’re on the “Attending” list\nNo “Plus Ones” on this hike\nPlan on completing the entire hike at a reasonable pace or please find an alternative hike that better suits your hiking level\nAll participants must be 18 or older\, or accompanied by a parent or legal guardian

SUMMARY:Loop Through Long Canyon/Wood Ranch - Gentler Friendly Hike
DESCRIPTION:Please review the guidelines to participate in our hikes. Here are some highlights and a link to the guidelines.\nRestrictions apply for your safety and ours: \n\nDon’t show up unless you’re on the “Attending” list\nNo “Plus Ones” on this hike\nPlan on sticking with the group\, and completing the entire hike at a reasonable pace or please find an alternative hike that better suits your hiking level.\nDogs are not permitted on State Park land.\nBring ample hydration and sun protection.\n\nhttp://photos4.meetupstatic.com/photos/event/1/c/9/0/event_180187312.jpeg \nLet’s hike through Wood Ranch with a loop just under 5 miles with an elevation gain of about 1000′. The trails have dried out so I recommend hiking poles for the spots with loose and rocky terrain. \nhttp://photos3.meetupstatic.com/photos/event/1/d/f/8/event_180187672.jpeg \nAfter we climb up the Long Canyon trail\, we’ll pass by rock formations with links to the past. Continuing the climb\, we’ll pause at the bench to take in the great view. \nOur loop will traverse Long Canyon\, Meadow Vista\, Hidden Canyon\, and Sunrise trails\, ending on the Woodridge connector trail back to the parking lot. \nhttps://www.alltrails.com/explore/recording/wood-ranch-loop-2f3bbb9 \nDuring the hike\, we’ll see how this area connects to several other WDTB hikes – Montgomery Canyon\, Albertson Motorway\, Autumn Ridge\, Woodridge\, and Sunset Hills trails. \nThis is a gentler hike. We will go at a more moderate pace than a regular Trailblazer hike\, and we’ll take more breaks. The purpose is to give novice and intermediate hikers who may feel they’re not up to a regular hike a chance to get out and experience our beautiful trails. Faster hikers are welcome to come along\, with the understanding that the hike is geared toward those who want to go at an easier pace. \nhttp://photos2.meetupstatic.com/photos/event/a/e/4/4/event_72884612.jpeg \nDirections:\nFrom the 23 between Moorpark and Thousand Oaks\, exit on Olsen Rd and go east (toward Simi). Olsen Rd becomes Madera Rd. Near the Reagan Library\, turn right onto Wood Ranch Pkwy. At the stop sign at the end\, turn right\, then make a quick left into the parking lot. \nFrom the 118 in Simi Valley\, exit on First St and go south. First St becomes Long Canyon Road. Continue just past Wood Ranch Pkwy\, and turn left into the parking lot. SUMMARY:Fossil and Old Boney Trails - Intermediate Hike
DESCRIPTION:Join us on this sweet (maybe not so sweet!) hike that wanders through grasslands and chaparral\, down into a canyon\, then up to eye-stretching views. We will follow Sycamore Canyon fire road until it intersects with the Fossil Trail. We will then take the Fossil Trail to the Old Boney Trail. The Fossil Trail features a hunk of fist-sized marine fossils smack dab in the middle of our path- we’ll actually walk on prehistory. \nIf it’s a clear day\, we’ll easily be able to see Santa Cruz Island\, as well as the Los Padres Mountain range. When we reach the Old Boney Trail\, we will make a left and continue on Old Boney until it intersects with the Danielson Fire Road. We will then take the Danielson Fire Road back to the cars. \nThis hike will be approximately 6.5 miles with an elevation gain of approximately 1700 feet. Bring poles if you favor them. \nDIRECTIONS: \nExit Ventura Fwy (101) at Lynn Road. Take Lynn Road southwest 5.25 miles to Via Goleta. Rancho Sierra Vista entrance (through the stone pillars and arch) is on the left. Drive to the end\, and park near the restroom facilities. \nPlease review our guidelines to participate in our hikes. Restrictions apply for your safety and ours: \n\nDon’t show up unless you’re on the “Attending” list\nNo “Plus Ones” on this hike\nPlan on completing the entire hike at a reasonable pace or please find an alternative hike that better suits your hiking level\nAll participants must be 18 or older\, or accompanied by a parent or legal guardian\n\nDISCLAIMER / RELEASE OF LIABILITY \nIMPORTANT\, PLEASE READ BELOW IN ITS ENTIRETY: \nThe hike host is a volunteer and not responsible for the group. SUMMARY:Intermediate Hike ~ Palo Comado / Cheseboro Loop via Ranch Center trail
DESCRIPTION:This week we’ll do a loop around the northeastern regions of the Santa Monica Mountains National Recreation Area and the Las Virgenes Open Space. This area traverses many ecosystems\, including riparian\, chaparral\, and the rockscape from Galaxy Quest. The area is generally dry\, but very nice! \nhttp://photos1.meetupstatic.com/photos/event/c/3/0/c/event_255709932.jpeg \nThe trailhead is where Sunnycrest turns into Doubletree\, about a mile east of Kanan Road (34°10’56.67″N\, 118°45’6.44″W). SUMMARY:Upper Stunt High Trail To Saddle Peak ~ Gentler Intermediate at a Slower Pace
DESCRIPTION:This hike begins at Upper Stunt High Trail\, a couple hundred feet to the right on the other side of the street from the parking lot. The trail winds upward gradually over switchbacks\, giving way as the trail heads up to a dramatic rocky overlook with striking views of the Pacific\, Stunt Ranch State Park\, Calabasas Peak\, and Old Topanga Canyon. There are also longer vistas northwest into Ventura County and east to the San Fernando Valley. We will see beautiful wooded areas and increasing views of the Santa Monica Mountains and Stunt Ranch State Park as we ascend. We eventually reach the Saddle Peak Trail via Backbone Trail and soon begin an easterly ridgeline walk high above the Pacific. This route will take us along and above spectacular tilted and pocketed sandstone formations\, with dramatic views of the mountains and ocean as we proceed. There will be a little rock-scambling close to the top. We will take a short break at Saddle Peak and return back the same way. \nIt is about 5 miles round-trip with 1000 feet of elevation gain. \nDirections: \nFrom the 101 – exit at the Las Virgenes Road exit and go south (toward the ocean). Drive 3 miles to Mulholland Highway and make a left turn. Continue 4 miles to Stunt Road and turn right. THERE IS NO SIGN FOR STUNT ROAD SO BE SURE TO SET YOUR MILEAGE or Google Maps. Go just past the 1.94 mile marker at the entrance to the UCLA Stunt Ranch Reserve\, park and meet in the asphalt pullout on the right. \nFrom the PCH – turn up Malibu Canyon Road and drive 6.5 miles to Mulholland Highway. SUMMARY:The Bridge is Back! - MASH via the Grassland Trail
DESCRIPTION:Please review our guidelines to participate in our hikes. Restrictions apply for your safety and ours: \n\nPlease don’t show up unless you’re on the “Attending” list\nUnregistered or waitlisted will be turned away\nSorry\, no “Plus Ones” on this hike\nNo dogs allowed in the state park\n\nThe usual access to MASH (Reagan Ranch) is still too overgrown to make for a comfortable hike. This alternate route will take us into the park from the north–Mulholland entrance to the Grassland Trail. The Grassland trail runs along a ridge line that affords panoramic views of MCSP’s central valley (aka Torpin Plain) before dropping down to Crags Road (aka High Road) that will take us up and over to Century Lake. From there we will proceed across the newly installed bridge to the MASH site. We will return the same way we came in with some small detours if time allows. Total distance is approximately 6.5 miles\, with minimal elevation gain/loss (according to Gaia GPS) of about 500′. \nOur departure time is 9:00 a.m. There is plenty of parking on Mulholland but you may have to go past the trailhead to find it. Just be aware of the “No Stopping” signs and park well within the white-stripes. There are pullouts up on the left where you can do a u-turn and park on the opposite side of the road. Please be careful! Walk facing traffic and watch for speeding cars. This is known as the “Mulholland Raceway”. \nDirections:\nTake the 101 Freeway to Las Virgenes Rd. exit. Proceed SOUTH (towards ocean) to Mulholland Hwy. Turn RIGHT on Mulholland. The Grassland Trail will be on your LEFT as you cross the bridge. Google maps gives the address as 26998 Mulholland Hwy. \nDISCLAIMER / RELEASE OF LIABILITY\nIMPORTANT\, PLEASE READ BELOW IN ITS ENTIRETY: \nThe hike host is a volunteer and not responsible for the group. SUMMARY:Ray Miller trail up to the fire road
DESCRIPTION:On this hike we will go up the Ray Miller trail to the fire road and back\, about 6 miles. It will probably still be cool enough on the beach to start at 9:00\, that will change soon. We’ll enjoy beautiful ocean views as we descend. \nLying along the brilliant blue Pacific Ocean at the west end of Malibu (just shy of Port Hueneme)\, the swelling blue ocean is rivaled in beauty by the undulating native California grasslands. On a clear day\, the Channel Islands are easily within sight\, although it is often foggy this time of year. \nMost of the trail is exposed\, bring sunscreen\, hopefully there will be some clouds. It may be mosquito season so it’s up to you whether you should bring bug repellent. \nWe’ll meet in the parking lot near the Ray Miller Trailhead (look for the brilliant yellow sign). There is a parking fee in the lot (or free with state parking pass). There is free parking on PCH just a short walk to the parking area. \nhttps://a248.e.akamai.net/secure.meetupstatic.com/photos/event/6/7/4/a/event_93326442.jpeg \nPlease review the ongoing guidelines to participate in our morning hikes. SUMMARY:Los Robles Trail with option to Angel Vista ~ Intermediate Hike
DESCRIPTION:Space Mountain is the name for Los Robles Trail West\, starting at Moorpark Road in Thousand Oaks and switchbacking up the hill to the west. No one seems to know why it’s called Space Mountain\, though maybe the Disney ride inspired it. Maybe former major league pitcher Bill “Spaceman” Lee had something to do with it. Maybe it’s the final frontier. Come out and throw your equally ludicrous guess into the ring. \nWe will hike to the fireroad just after the new section…and you can opt to go up to Angel Vista for the views. If you go all the way\, you will hike just under or over 8 miles total with about 1350’ of gain. I may not make it all the way…I’m nursing a post-operative hand. If you turn around at the fireroad\, it will be shorter and less gain. Duh. If you don’t know the way\, stay with me. \nDirections: From the 101 in Thousand Oaks\, turn south on Moorpark Road. We will meet in the parking lot at the corner of Moorpark and Greenmeadow. \nPlease review our guidelines to participate in our hikes. Restrictions apply for your safety and ours: \n\nPlease don’t show up unless you’re on the “Attending” list\nUnregistered or waitlisted will be turned away\nSorry\, no “Plus Ones” on this hike\nNo dogs\n\nDISCLAIMER / RELEASE OF LIABILITY \nIMPORTANT\, PLEASE READ BELOW IN ITS ENTIRETY: \nThe hike host is a volunteer and not responsible for the group. SUMMARY:COSF: Water: Where it comes from\, how we use it\, where it goes—& why it matters
DESCRIPTION:Please join Conejo Open Space Foundation for a live online presentation by local expert Jennifer Lancaster who will discuss the origins of our water\, how it’s used\, where it winds up\, and whether those practices are sustainable at their current levels. After the presentations\, there will be a Q & A session for attendees to ask about issues of prime interest to them. \nAlthough the Conejo Valley received unusually abundant rain this year\, water will continue to be of critical concern for Ventura County residents and our county’s primary industry\, agriculture. Jennifer will also go over new challenges that water managers face from the state’s changing hydrology\, and how we can better use the water we get through conservation and planning. \nMs. Lancaster is Principal Resource Specialist at Calleguas Municipal Water District. She received her Bachelor of Science degree in biology from the University of California\, Riverside and her Master of Science in biology from California State University\, Northridge. She began her career as a biological science technician for the National Park Service and has also taught at Moorpark and Pierce Colleges. \nHeld quarterly since 2019\, the COSF Speaker Series has included climate authority Dr. Sean Anderson as well as wildlife experts Dr. Dan Cooper\, Dr. Seth Riley\, Dr. Jessica Sanchez\, and the National Wildlife Federation’s regional executive director Beth Pratt. \nTo sign up for this event\, go to the registration page on the COSF website and fill in the form. While this is a free event\, we encourage a donation of $10 to support future Speaker Series presentations. \nThis talk is sponsored in part by Calleguas Municipal Water District and the City of Thousand Oaks.

SUMMARY:Hill & Hawk Canyons to trails with wildflower blooms - Gentler Intermediate
DESCRIPTION:This is a second hike for Thursday at Hill Canyon in Camarillo. It is a gentler hike. We will start at the parking area in Hill Canyon\, cross the bridge over the runoff creek\, and stroll a mile before turning onto the Hawk Canyon Trail. The Hawk Canyon Trail connects to Western Plateau Trail and Peninsula Trail which runs back down rejoining the Western Plateau Trail to The Hawk Canyon Trail. Then\, we will hike up the hidden trail and descend back into Hill Canyon and follow it all the way back to the parking lot. We will take a few breaks along the way to wait for everyone to catch up. Hopefully there will still be some flowers\, but it is drying up a bit. This is approximately 6 miles with an elevation gain of approximately 1000 feet. The trail is a bit overgrown so wear long pants and check for ticks after the hike. \nDirections: \nFrom Moorpark Road in the Santa Rosa Valley\, drive west on Santa Rosa Road for 3.7 miles\, turn left (south) on Hill Canyon Road for about 0.6 miles to the parking lot. \nFrom the 101 Freeway in Camarillo\, take exit 52 onto Santa Rosa Road and drive northeast. After 5 miles\, turn right onto Hill Canyon Road for about 0.6 miles to the parking lot. \nPlease review the guidelines (link to the guidelines) to join our hikes.\nRestrictions apply for your safety and ours: \n\nPlease do not show up unless you’re shown on the “Attending” list.\nNo dogs.\nNo “Plus Ones” Weekday Trailblazer hikes.\n\nDISCLAIMER/RELEASE OF LIABILITY – PLEASE READ IN ITS ENTIRETY\nThe hike host is a volunteer and not responsible for the group. From there we’ll make a clockwise loop along several trails\, starting with Sierra Vista\, followed by Las Brisas and El Cerro. El Cerro will drop us off at Via Las Brisas where we will have a 1/2 mile or so sidewalk stroll to the Potrero Ridge trail which takes us back to our cars. I previewed this trail on Saturday and it was spectacular. The monkey flowers have gone bananas (sorry) along with masses of purple sage and cliff aster. There are also great views of the Channel Islands to the west. \nMy Gaia clocked this hike at just over 6 miles with 800 feet elevation gain. Total time at a leisurely pace was 2 1/2 hours. \nThere is no cover on this hike as it climbs up and down the ridges of Dos Vientos\, so be sure to bring plenty of water and protection from the sun. \nDriving Directions: \nDriving Directions: From the 101 freeway\, turn south onto Wendy Drive\, towards the ocean. Continue for about 0.7 miles and turn right at Borchard Rd and head west 0.5 miles. Turn left on S. Reino Rd taking this south for about a mile. You will pass an Albertson’s supermarket\, then turn right onto Maurice Drive and right on Mountain Creek Drive. SUMMARY:**July 4th Special! Encinal Canyon to Top of the World (or close)-Intermediate
DESCRIPTION:**Note start time of 8:30!\nCome hike for “liberty and justice for all”\, or at least to be able to eat more at your holiday celebration! \nIt’s an out and back\, so go as far as you’d like and have time for. \nPlease review the guidelines to participate in our morning hikes. Here are some highlights and a link to the guidelines: \nhttps://www.meetup.com/the-weekday-trailblazers/ \nRestrictions apply for your safety and ours: \n\nDon’t show up unless you’re on the “Attending” list\nNo “Plus Ones” on this hike\nSign out if you are not attending\n\nEncinal Canyon is named for encina\, the Spanish word for the holm oak\, a lovely Mediterranean tree with holly characteristics. Holm oaks are one of the main trees used to establish truffle orchards\, but we’ll be nosing around the canyon strictly for its beauty. \nThe trail from Encinal is a smooth\, firm\, and well-traveled singletrack- climbing\, swooping and winding with a constant\, gentle slope. We’ll have fabulous views of the coast for much of the way. Close to the top\, we’ll take on the slightly steeper Etz Meloy Motorway\, then the last tenth of a mile is up a seldom-used trail to the isolated peak\, where we’ll both lose and catch our breath with a 360-degree view. \nFrom our perch above it all we’ll see Sandstone Peak to the west\, Simi Valley to the north\, Ladyface and Mt Baldy to the east and the Channel Islands to the south. \nIf you go all the way\, this is an 8 mile out and back hike\, with about 1200′ of elevation gain. If you don’t go all the way\, it’s less. \nGive yourself extra time to get to the trailhead- the roads are winding and slow. \nDirections: \nThe parking area is off the north side of Encinal Canyon Road\, almost directly across the street from the Camp 13 fire station. Park in the large dirt lot\, which is free. \nFrom the 101 Freeway\, turn south on Kanan Rd. Continue 6.2 miles\, then turn right onto Mulholland Hwy. After 0.9 miles\, veer left onto Encinal Canyon Rd. Drive 2.4 miles to the parking area\, on the right. \nFrom the Pacific Coast Highway – From the PCH\, turn up Encinal Canyon Road. Drive 5 miles\, then turn right onto Encinal Cyn Rd. Continue 1.1 miles to the parking area\, on the left. \nDISCLAIMER / RELEASE OF LIABILITY \nThe hike host is a volunteer and not responsible for the group. Safety should be a priority for everyone in the group. Please treat this meet-up as hiking with a group of friends. SUMMARY:A longer Sycamore Canyon evening hike: Joanne's route
DESCRIPTION:PLEASE NOTE THE PARKING/MEETUP LOCATION DESCRIBED BELOW (IT’S NOT WENDY & POTRERO).\nRoute is a past favorite with the Weekday Trailblazers and Geo-hikes. Joanne is visiting SoCal\, will attend\, just like old times! Hike is 9.2 miles and about 1150ft up. Pace will be moderate (~2.5 MPH). It’s a longer than usual evening hike and a solid workout. We will head down the paved Sycamore Canyon Road and drop into the canyon\, make a right onto the Ranch Center Road and take it up hill and out of the canyon until we reach some old water tanks. A left turn and descend down the Ranch Center Fire Road\, returning us to the bottom of Sycamore Canyon near the ranger’s house\, the campground and where we will take a quick break and regroup. After\, head back up the Sycamore Canyon Road to our cars. Note: the Ranch Center Road and the Ranch Center Fire Road are different roads. \nHike is cross-posted with Geo-hikes: https://www.meetup.com/https-www-meetup-com-geo-hikes/events/294357984/ \nBRING A HEADLAMP OR FLASHLIGHT! \nDIRECTIONS:\nTake Highway 101 to Thousand Oaks. Exit at Wendy Drive. Go south (towards the ocean) on Wendy. At Lynn turn right\, then left at Reino that turns into Potrero Road. Take Potrero to Pinehill and turn right and park (Do not park on Potrero as you need a permit). Walk back along Potrero to its intersection with Big Sycamore Canyon Road that is more or less across from 4153 Potrero Road-don’t pester folks at 4153 Potrero and keep your voices down. We will start hike there. There are no restrooms at the trailhead. \nEssentials :\nBring water and a snack. Be willing to get a good workout! Bring your cellphone\, a headlamp or flashlight. \nDISCLAIMER / RELEASE OF LIABILITY\nIMPORTANT\, PLEASE READ BELOW IN ITS ENTIRETY:\nThe hike host is a volunteer and not responsible for the group. SUMMARY:Sycamore Canyon Hike from the Ocean
DESCRIPTION:HIKE DETAILS:\nThis is a gentler hike for Thursday\, hopefully there will be a marine layer at the beach since we are starting at 9:00. This hike will go from the beach up to the picnic table on the fire road\, approximately 5.5 miles. Most of the hike is exposed\, but hopefully we will have some fog. Bring sunscreen and bug spray. No dogs. \nWe will meet in the Day Use parking lot at Sycamore Canyon Campground and start off along the main Sycamore Canyon road and turn up to the fire road where we will climb up to the picnic table (hopefully no water or very little at the bottom). If you want to turn left at the picnic table and go up to where the Ray Miller trail meets the fire road (another mile up and mile back) you can do that and then turn around. We will follow the fire road down to the parking lot. \nDirections: \nWe will be meeting at the Sycamore Canyon Campground and day use parking area on Pacific Coast hwy. This trailhead and parking area is a few miles south from the La Jolla Canyon Parking area where we go to hike the Ray Miller Trail. \nParking is available in the campground for $12 (or free with a State Parking Permit\, the 2022 Parking Permit is still good through 2023). There may not be free parking on PCH. \nThere are also restrooms at the day parking lot. \nDISCLAIMER / RELEASE OF LIABILITY \nIMPORTANT\, PLEASE READ BELOW IN ITS ENTIRETY: \nThe hike host is a volunteer and not responsible for the group. SUMMARY:Oak Creek Canyon to Los Padres Loop ~ Gentler Intermediate
DESCRIPTION:Oak Creek Canyon Trail is a rather special trail in Los Robles Open Space that is designed for the blind as well as the sighted. The all-access trail is shaded by a canopy of oaks\, while the loop trail spends more time in the chaparral. The trails form a U-shape that is connected by hiking a tenth of a mile on Greenmeadow Avenue.\nWe will start at Oak Creek Canyon and proceed to a connector trail a short distance until we meet a junction with Los Robles Trail East. Along this big loop\, you’ll travel through a couple of very nice oak groves\, and get some great views throughout the Los Robles (along the Los Robles Overlook/Scenic View Loop) and Los Padres trails encompassed in the Robles Open Space. There is a very short section along streets/sidewalks when we return back to the latter part of Oak Creek Canyon Trail and complete the big loop.\nThis hike will be a five-mile loop with about a 900’ elevation gain/loss. \nDirection: From the 101 freeway\, drive to the south end of Moorpark Rd\, turn right on Greenmeadow Ave.\, and go a half mile to the parking lot. \nPlease review our guidelines to participate in our hikes.\nRestrictions apply for your safety and ours: \n\nDon’t show up unless you’re shown on the “Attending” list.\nPlan on KEEPING UP with the group and completing the entire hike at a moderate pace\, or please find an alternative hike that better suits your hiking level.\nNo “Plus Ones” or dogs on Weekday Trailblazer hikes.\n\nDISCLAIMER/RELEASE OF LIABILITY – PLEASE READ IN ITS ENTIRETY\nThe hike host is a volunteer and not responsible for the group. Safety should be a priority for everyone in the group. Please treat this meet-up as hiking with a group of friends. If you become fatigued and unable to continue the hike\, it is expected you will advise the hike host of this and return to our starting point on your own. If you are able to proceed\, it is expected that you will maintain line of sight with other members of the group at all times and help to promote the group’s safety and fitness goals.\nOutdoor sports and other events we plan can be inherently dangerous and accidents may happen. SUMMARY:8:30 am - Top of the Santa Monicas - Mishe Mokwa Loop
DESCRIPTION:Hike Description (Intermediate/Strenuous) \nWe will be exploring one of the most beautiful areas of the Santa Monica Mountains. From the Sandstone Peak Parking lot we will begin with an ascent to Sandstone Peak (the highest point of the Santa Monica Mountains\, 3111′ above sea level) and then veer off to the right\, taking the Mishe Mokwa loop. As we hike Mishe Mokwa we will be passing Inspiration Point\, the (real) Boney Mountain\, Tri-Peaks\, pass Split Rock\, and then see Echo Cliffs\, where rock climbers ascend sheer cliffs\, and a house sized boulder balances delicately on a small rock beneath. This route will give us a total of about 6.5 miles\,and approximately 1500′ elevation gain as we go up and down. \nDirections: at least 30 minutes from 101/Westlake Boulevard \nFrom Westlake Village\, exit 101 onto Westlake Blvd (CA-23 South)\, and follow it south for approximately 7 miles to stop sign for Mulholland West (Note: Westlake Blvd. will merge with Mulholland East before you reach the stop sign). At the stop sign\, turn right onto Mulholland (West) for about 0.4 miles. Turn right onto Little Sycamore Canyon\, which becomes Yerba Buena Road after 1.4 miles\, for 4 1/2 miles to Sandstone Peak trailhead. The Sandstone Peak lot is on the right side of the road. Look for large Sandstone Peak sign. The parking lot is above Yerba Buena Road and there is a bathroom at the end of the parking lot. If you pass the Circle X Ranch\, you went too far. Turn around!! \nAlternately\, from Pacific Coast Highway take Yerba Buena Road (near Neptune’s Net) approximately 7 miles (passing the Circle X Ranch. Note: Sandstone Peak trailhead is approximately 1 mile from the Circle X Ranch). OR HWY 23 (Decker Cyn – 4 miles west of Point Dume)\, turn onto Mulholland and follow directions as shown above. \nNote: This is a very slow driving route (narrow\, with sharp turns) and will take 30 minutes from the 101 to the parking lot. Give yourself plenty of time. Cell reception is marginal (at best) up there\, so we won’t be waiting on any “I’m late” calls. \nBring sunscreen\, plenty of water\, and wear sturdy shoes and a sun hat. Please consider bringing the 10 essentials ().\nOur departure time is 8:30 a.m. Please plan on arriving by 8:15 to use the restroom\, get your boots and backpack on in time. \nDo NOT leave anything of value in your car\, at this or any other trailhead.
