SUMMARY:Gentler / Beginner: Kanan Dume to Latigo - 5 miles
DESCRIPTION:This is an easier hike for Tuesday\, another has also been posted close by\, please only sign up for one hike. This hike is only 5 miles and will take us on a less-traveled but quite beautiful part of the 67-mile Backbone Trail\, which runs through the Santa Monica Mountains National Recreation Area from Will Rogers State Park in the east to Point Mugu in the west. \nThe route begins at Kanan Dume Road and goes southerly a short distance\, allowing us to cross over the southernmost tunnel (Tunnel 1) above Kanan Dume Road. We then proceed easterly roughly 2.2 miles and up 600 feet\, gradually winding our way up and through Latigo Canyon\, turning around at Latigo Canyon Road\, and returning to the cars. This hike can include a short jog up to the ridgeline for spectacular Pacific Ocean views. I’ve heard from a reliable source that there will be some wildflowers along this route. \nThis hike has a short but steep climb at the beginning\, where we will help and encourage beginning hikers (who still should be prepared for a 150′ climb). Poles would be a good idea when returning. \nThe terrain is a mix of single and double-file trail with occasional stretches of loose rock and gravel (you may want to bring trekking poles). The majority of our out and back hike is wooded and shaded canyon trails\, offering periodic glimpses of the Pacific. A deep “V” into a shaded cleft\, with another 450′ of descent and climb will complete the elevation loss and gain. \nThe total distance for this hike will be approximately 5 miles with 600 feet of elevation gain. \nDirections: \nFrom the 101 – exit at the Kanan Road exit and drive south (toward the ocean) 7.8 miles\, going through two of the three tunnels on this road (which changes name to Kanan Dume Road). Turn right into the “Backbone Trail” parking area\, just before entering the third tunnel. \nFrom PCH – turn up South Kanan Dume Road. Drive 4.4 miles from PCH\, going through one tunnel\, and then turn left into the “Backbone Trail” parking area\, almost immediately after coming out of the tunnel. SUMMARY:Ray Miller Trail in La Jolla Canyon ~ Gentler Intermediate
DESCRIPTION:Let’s try Ray Miller Trail after last week’s rain. The trail is an awesome blend of ocean and mountain views in Malibu’s La Jolla Canyon. We will start from the trailhead which follows the canyon eastward\, away from the ocean. Then\, it quickly brings you back toward the ocean at a gradual incline. There’s a great lookout spot where it gives you a breathtaking view of the Pacific Coast Highway against the backdrop of the Pacific Ocean\, with sweeping views toward Mugu Rock on the west and Sycamore Cove on the east. After another peak\, you’ll start a slight decline that brings you to the fire road where we will turn around. Along the way\, we’ll be treated to magnificent sweeping views of La Jolla and Big Sycamore Canyons\, and of course\, the largest ocean in the world. On a clear day\, the Channel Islands are easily within sight.\nThis is a 5-6 mile out and back hike with an elevation gain/loss of about 1000’. \nDirections: \nFrom Los Angeles\, take the Pacific Coast Highway (PCH) north\, 22 miles from Malibu Canyon Rd. Across the street from Thornhill Broome Beach is the entrance to La Jolla Canyon. It is very clearly marked. Turn right. \nFrom Ventura\, take PCH eastward\, and turn left 4 miles after Las Posas Road. \nHeads up: There is a parking fee in the lot (or free with state parking pass). SUMMARY:Fall In To the Gap - Latigo to Corral Canyon ~ Intermediate Hike
DESCRIPTION:Today we’ll hike the Backbone Trail looking for wildflowers. We’ll begin at Latigo Canyon and walk on dirt and stuff until we reach the familiar sandstone structures of Mesa Peak Motorway. Along the way\, we’ll cross Castro Crest and descend into Upper Solstice Canyon before we climb to Mesa Peak Motorway\, at the top of Corral Canyon. \nWe’re starting high\, dipping down\, then rising again from Latigo to Castro Crest for broad views of mountains and canyons. The descent from Castro Crest is the standard chaparral-blanketed fare we’re accustomed to in this area. Once on the floor of Upper Solstice\, we’ll “ford” seasonal streams and check for the charred remnants of the previous cover. The climb up to Castro Peak Motorway becomes increasingly rocky\, so poles may prove to be useful. \nWe will return the way we came. \nTotal distance is 8.4 miles\, with 1650’ of elevation gain. \nPlease review the guidelines to participate in our hikes. SUMMARY:Rosewood Trail: Lynn to Angel Vista - Gentler Intermediate
DESCRIPTION:Meet at the Rosewood sign\, which is at the Regal Oak Ct. and Lynn Rd. intersection. The hike is about 5 miles with an elevation gain/loss approximately 900’. \nWe’ll walk a short distance on Lynn road to the lower Rosewood Trail\, then take the dirt trail up a shaded ravine and continue on the Rosewood trail to the Angel Vista peak. \nRosewood trail presents a clear view over the 101 Freeway carving up the Conejo Valley. This is a preview of the panorama to come at Angel Vista\, and the view grows larger as you hike higher up the mountain. SUMMARY:Lindero Canyon Road to Simi Peak (Fast Paced)
DESCRIPTION:http://photos1.meetupstatic.com/photos/event/e/3/a/0/event_167038272.jpeg \nThis hike has some rocky parts\, but no scrambling. \nThis hike will take us on a scenic trip from the suburbs of Oak Park to the top of Simi Peak\, which overlooks both the Simi and Conejo Valleys and offers splendid views of the Santa Monica range and offshore islands to the south and west. \nOur route begins at the north end of Oak Park. We begin our ascent\, through a series of switchbacks\, a fire road\, and then a double track. Once we reach China Flats\, our remaining route is reasonably flat\, except for the last quarter mile\, as we ascend about 300 feet to reach Simi Peak and its worthwhile views. The terrain is a mix of single and double-file trail and open fire road. \nThe total distance will be approximately 6+ miles with 1400+ feet elevation gain. \nThe hike is mainly open hillside and chaparral. The weather can range from calm to windy and from warm to hot. Dress accordingly. We will stop at Simi Peak to grab a snack and enjoy the great views there\, and return to the traihead via China Flat and then the fire road back to our starting point. \nParking: \nParking is free at the Lindero Canyon Trailhead. Please do not leave anything of value in your car\, at this or any other trailhead. \nDirections: \nFrom the 101 Freeway – Exit the 101 freeway at Lindero Canyon Road and turn north toward the Simi Hills. Drive about 4 miles on Lindero Canyon Road to Wembly Ave. and make a U-turn. After the U-turn\, the China Flats Trailhead will be on the right. DESCRIPTION:Palo Comado (“Burnt Stick” in Spanish) tells you a lot about the environs – frequently burned over by wildfires\, this was directly in the line of the Woolsey Fire but much of the vegetation has re-grown. \nThis is one of many routes from the Conejo Valley to China Flat. Except for one turn near the trailhead\, this gentle 900′ climb\, punctuated by a 100′ climb and descent just at the start\, is uninterrupted until we get up to the top\, where we’ll rest at the bench\, turn around\, and head back. \nThis is about 6 mile hike with about 1\,000′ of elevation gain. \nUPDATE: Please review the guidelines to participate in our morning hikes. SUMMARY:Hill Canyon Santa Rosa Regional Park
DESCRIPTION:A second hike for Thursday\, this will be a bit slower. We will start at the parking area in Hill Canyon\, cross the bridge over the runoff creek\, and stroll a mile before turning onto the fire road up the Western Plateau. We will go straight at the crest of the fire road and then turn on the Plateau Rim loop and then return down the Hawk Canyon Trail. The Hawk Canyon Trail connects to Western Plateau Trail back to the parking lot. We will take a few breaks along the way to wait for everyone to catch up. This is approximately 6 miles with an elevation gain of approximately 1000 feet. \nDirections: \nFrom Moorpark Road in the Santa Rosa Valley\, drive west on Santa Rosa Road for 3.7 miles\, turn left (south) on Hill Canyon Road for about 0.6 miles to the parking lot. \nFrom the 101 Freeway in Camarillo\, take exit 52 onto Santa Rosa Road and drive northeast. DESCRIPTION:We will start (early to beat the heat) our hike near the beginning of Regal Oak Ct. on the lower Rosewood Trail\, a dirt trail heading up a shaded ravine at the base of the mountains\, and continue to the usual Rosewood trail. Rosewood trail presents a clear view over the 101 Freeway carving up the Conejo Valley. This is a preview of the panorama to come at Angel Vista\, and the view grows larger as you hike higher up the mountain. DESCRIPTION:NOTE: \nI have cancelled the hike for Newton Canyon off Kanan for Tuesday April 16\, because there was more rain that I expected and that hike takes us down into the valley and I think it will be too wet. So this is an alternative\, but we will still get in at least 5 miles. We will start in the parking lot at the end of Moorhead and walk down the street to Las Padres and go up that path\, around and all the way over to the parking lot off Greenmeadow and take the hiking path back to our parking lot at Moorpark. It’s a fun hike and this area dries out very fast so it should not be muddy. \n“Robles” is Spanish for oaks\, and we’ll see plenty of them on this beautiful hike. SUMMARY:Encinal Canyon to Top of the World ~ 8 mile Intermediate Hike
DESCRIPTION:Encinal Canyon is named for encina\, the Spanish word for the holm oak\, a lovely Mediterranean tree with holly characteristics. Holm oaks are one of the main trees used to establish truffle orchards\, but we’ll be nosing around the canyon strictly for its beauty. \nThe trail from Encinal is a smooth\, firm\, and well-traveled single track\, swooping and winding with a constant\, gentle slope. We’ll have fabulous views of the coast for much of the way. Close to the top\, we’ll take on the slightly steeper Etz Meloy Motorway\, then the last tenth of a mile is up a seldom-used trail to the isolated peak\, where we’ll both lose and catch our breath with a 360-degree view. \nFrom our perch above it all we’ll see Sandstone Peak to the west\, Simi Valley to the north\, Ladyface and Mt Baldy to the east and the Channel Islands to the south and west. \nThis is an 8 mile out and back hike\, with about 1200′ of elevation gain. \nNOTE: Please review the guidelines to participate in our hikes. We’re only going 5 miles to the fire road. \nFrom the Kanan Rd trailhead\, we’ll jump on the Backbone Trail for a cruise down into Newton Canyon. On our way there\, we’ll cross the creek\, pass under an oak canopy\, and come out into an opening. At the opening\, look toward the sandstone formations in the distance\, and we may see a flow of water from Upper Newton Falls\, especially since it may rain the weekend before. We will have a good time hiking through the area and get a great workout. This hike will be a fast-paced\, moderately strenuous 7 mile trek with an elevation gain of 1\,200+ ft\, through the Conejo historic Danielson Ranch area. We will be taking the standard route (no Fossil Trail). We may or may not get back back before dark\, so please pack a head lamp or flashlight. We will get some killer views of the 1000 Oaks and Newbury Park areas as well as Point Mugu and even the Channel Islands and Pacific Ocean on a clear day. Looking forward to seeing you there! \nDIRECTIONS: \nTake Highway 101 to Thousand Oaks. Exit at Wendy Drive. Go south (towards the ocean) on Wendy all the way until it dead ends at the Santa Monica Mountains National Recreation Area. There is ample free parking on the dirt along Potrero Road. DESCRIPTION:Okay\, we are rescheduling this trip for April 18\, the weather should be better. The water was too chopping on March 7 so they cancelled. Perhaps those who had booked for March 7 could transfer their tickets for April 18 but please contact Island Packers today. Please book your passage before you sign-up with Trailblazers\, as the boat may fill-up. \nThe trip by boat lasts a little over an hour leaving Ventura Harbor at 9:00 AM. They want us to be at the dock 45 minutes prior to departure (8:15 AM). Once we arrive on the Island\, we’ll hike 2.5 miles out to Potato Harbor via Cavern Point\, and return along Potato Harbor Road. When we reach the camp ground we’ll have lunch. The hike is very moderate and should return us in plenty of time for some sightseeing at the historic ranch\, museum\, or extra hiking into Scorpion Canyon. SUMMARY:Rancho Sierra Vista\, Peace\, Love\, and Joy
DESCRIPTION:Let’s head out to the famed Peace\, Love\, Joy arch at the Danielson. This out and back hike wanders through grasslands and chaparral from the Rancho Sierra Vista trailhead\, then climbs up Danielson fire road for some fantastic views north to Port Hueneme and Oxnard and west toward the Pacific Ocean. If it’s really clear\, we’ll catch a glimpse of Mount Baldy in the distance to our east. At the upper end we’ll visit the remnants of an old cabin and the Danielson Monument. The monument is dedicated to Richard Danielson\, the person who donated much of the land for the Santa Monica Mountains National Recreation Area (SMNMRA). The hike will start in SMNMRA and pass into Point Mugu State Park. DESCRIPTION:This hike starts at Castillo Trail to Wildwood Park. In the spring\, it’s spectacular with an abundance of mustard greens\, wildflowers and California poppies in addition to bountiful water in the waterfalls and creeks. \nWildwood Park in Thousand Oaks is one of the most versatile local parks with 27 miles of trails skittering through this area\, which includes Wildwood’s archetypal western look that served as the set for The Rifleman\, Gunsmoke\, and Wagon Train back in the day\, as well as the movie Spartacus. \nWe hike various trails with a long creek\, crossing streams and bridges\, Indian caves\, volcanic rock cliffs and waterfalls passing through desert\, meadow\, and woodland environments at various points along the way. \nWe’ll hike over 5-6 miles with approximately 1000’ of elevation gain/loss. \nDirections: \nFrom the 101 in Thousand Oaks\, turn north on Lynn Road and continue to Avenida De Los Arboles\, then turn left. SUMMARY:Ride the Two Winds (Dos Vientos) - Gentler Friendly
DESCRIPTION:I’m sure we will see plenty of wildflowers blooming in Dos Vientos. \nThis hike will loop around the periphery of Dos Vientos Open Space\, passing Twin Ponds\, overlooking Potrero Road and the Oxnard Plain with the Channel Islands in the background. We will cross 2 streets along the way. \nThis hike is about 5.0 miles with 800 feet of elevation gain. \nPace: This is a gentler friendly hike. We will go at a slightly slower pace than the Intermediate Trailblazer Hikes\, and we will finish in about\n2 hours. Faster hikers are welcome to join us so long as they are willing to hike at the slower pace of the group or wait at the forks on the trail. There are many confusing side trails in Dos Vientos so I ask that everyone plan to stay in contact with the group. \nPlease note this trail is very exposed (no shade) and there is no water along the way. \nDIRECTIONS: From the 101 Freeway in Newbury Park\, exit at Borchard Road. Drive 3.4 miles and turn into the Dos Vientos Community Park on the right\, just after Via Ricardo (and before Via Las Brisas). DESCRIPTION:Hike Description (Intermediate/Strenuous)\nWe will be hiking through the eastern most portion of Malibu Creek State Park\, up to the rarely seen\, North East backside of Castro Crest – via the Bulldog fire road. The views are stunning\, all the way to the top\, with sandstone monoliths casting dramatic shadows across the land. \nThis hike starts at the easternmost (2nd) intersection of Crags Road and Seminole. We will meet there at the corner\, and then hike a short distance\, through the community further up Crags Rd before entering Malibu Creek State Park.\nPlease pay attention to the signs for permitted parking along the road\, and if you can\, carpool with someone. – an option for those who are Carpooling – meet and then carpool from Reagan Ranch parking area at Mulholland & Lake Vista Dr. As we will be entering and leaving from the Malibou Lake neighborhood trailhead\, and parking is limited\, please be considerate.\nThe hike distance is a little over 8 miles (out and back) with 2150 elevation gain. DESCRIPTION:Please follow the written directions below as the map may not be correct. \nOur Out And Back (OAB) hike will take us on a less-traveled but quite beautiful part of the 60-mile Backbone Trail\, which runs through the Santa Monica Mountains National Recreation Area from Will Rogers State Park in the east to Point Mugu in the west. \nThe route begins at Kanan Dume Road and goes southerly a short distance\, allowing us to cross over the southernmost tunnel (Tunnel 1) above Kanan Dume Road. We then proceed easterly roughly 3 1/2 miles and up 1250 feet\, gradually winding our way up and through Latigo Canyon\, crossing Latigo Canyon Road\, and then ending at a saddle or on a bluff immediately south of Castro Peak with spectacular Pacific views. \nhttp://photos1.meetupstatic.com/photos/event/3/8/0/6/event_101654342.jpeg \nThe terrain is a mix of single and double-file trail. DESCRIPTION:Time to re-explore the Los Robles trail system. This will be about a 5-6 mile lollipop hike with approximately 700-1000 feet of elevation gain. We start at the trailhead at the back parking lot of Triunfo Park and go up to the Los Robles trail. We then loop around counter-clockwise by way of the White Horse canyon trail\, across the ridge\, and back down into the Triunfo trail. SUMMARY:On the Backbone from Newton Canyon to Buzzards Roost - Waterfalls? Wildflowers?
DESCRIPTION:Let’s go see what’s in bloom in one of our favorite hiking spots\, Newton Canyon to Buzzard’s Roost! \nThis area was burned over in the Woolsey fire\, but since then it has been thick with wildflowers\, freely flowing water\, and a few waterfalls\, including the Upper Newton Canyon falls\, above. Last spring\, we saw lupines\, poppies\, lilies\, and a real rarity – Indian Chief (related to Indian Paintbrush\, but much rarer here in southern California). There is a tiny bit of Poison Oak sprouting\, easily avoided. This year\, the Phlox and Phaecelia are already starting to poke their heads out\, and Shooting Stars are starting to appear\, so let’s go see what else is blooming. \nFrom the Kanan Rd trailhead\, we’ll jump on the Backbone Trail for a cruise over and up to the peak of the Zuma Ridge Trail at Buzzard’s Roost. On the ridge\, we’ll have a great view of Zuma Beach and the Pacific. On our way there\, we’ll cross a free-flowing creek near where a footbridge once stood\, pass under a scorched oak canopy\, and come out to a beautiful view of Upper Newton Falls spilling down a cliff to the valley floor. \nThis is an out and back hike at a total of 8 miles\, with 1600′ total elevation gain\, most of it leading to the turnaround point with the ocean view at Buzzards Roost. Even the beginning and end of the hike are mostly exposed after the fire. The middle portion is completely exposed; prepare accordingly. \nDirections: \nFrom the 101\, go south (toward beaches) on Kanan Road about 8 miles to just before the third tunnel (T1). SUMMARY:Hill Canyon Santa Rosa Regional Park
DESCRIPTION:This is a second hike for Tuesday. We did this hike a few weeks ago but this time we will go the opposite direction. We will start at the parking area in Hill Canyon\, cross the bridge over the runoff creek and follow that trail past the Western Plateau turn and keep on the Hawk Canyon Trail. The Hawk Canyon Trail connects to Western Plateau Trail at the top but we will go around the Plateau Rim Trail at the top before heading back down to the fire road and back to the parking lot. We will take a few breaks along the way to wait for everyone to catch up. This is approximately 5.5 miles with an elevation gain of approximately 1000 feet. \nDirections: \nFrom Moorpark Road in the Santa Rosa Valley\, drive west on Santa Rosa Road for 3.7 miles\, turn left (south) on Hill Canyon Road for about 0.6 miles to the parking lot. \nFrom the 101 Freeway in Camarillo\, take exit 52 onto Santa Rosa Road and drive northeast. SUMMARY:Dr. Julie Morley: Helping Hummingbirds: Let's Make the Future Brighter!
DESCRIPTION:Ornithologist and multispecies expert Dr. Julie Morley will kick off COSF’s 2024 speaker series at 7:00 p.m. on May 1 with a videoconference presentation on how you can help the Hummingbirds. \nShe will discuss how to create a hospitable hummingbird habitat in your backyard\, how to choose and maintain healthy feeders\, and which species you’re likely to see in our area. Dr. Morley will also cover hummingbird lifecycles\, which species are threatened or endangered and what else we can do to help. \nDr. Julie Morley is an ornithologist\, author\, photographer\, multispecies scholar and founder of Multispecies Media\, a nonprofit that seeks to educate people about the importance of coexistence with other species. She is the author of Future Sacred: The Connected Creativity of Nature and wrote her doctoral dissertation\, Crow Cosmopolitics\, on corvid behavior. Her Instagram account\, @juliejmorley\, focuses on her photography of hummingbirds. \nDr. Morley received her PhD in Multispecies Studies and her MA in Transformative Leadership from the California Institute of Integral Studies. SUMMARY:Wildwood Central Park ~ Gentler Intermediate
DESCRIPTION:This is a second Gentler Hike on Thursday. It will also be at Wildwood\, but starting from the main parking lot. \nWildwood Park in Thousand Oaks is one of the most versatile local parks there is\, with 27 miles of trails skittering through rocky cliffs\, cacti-filled desert environs\, volcanic rock\, riparian forest\, and a cool\, watery canyon. Highlights of the hike include waterfalls incorporating 40’ Paradise waterfalls along with a long creek\, Indian caves\, volcanic rock cliffs\, and wildflowers throughout. Wildwood’s archetypal western look served as the set for The Rifleman\, Gunsmoke\, and Wagon Train back in the day\, as well as the movie Spartacus. Currently\, it’s very beautiful with an abundance of wildflowers and California poppies in addition to powerful waterfalls. \nIt will start at the main parking lot and head straight out onto the Mesa Trail. We’ll make a left and go up the Stagecoach trail until we turn down towards the water treatment plant. Along the way we will pass through various trails with bridges\, waterfalls\, crossing streams and tree canopies over approximately 5 miles with about a 900’ elevation gain/loss. \nDirections:\nFrom the 101 in Thousand Oaks\, turn north on Lynn Road and continue 2.6 miles to Avenida De Los Arboles\, then turn left. Continue for about a mile to the end and turn into the Wildwood parking lot on the left. \nFrom the 118\, travel west to the 23\, exit at Avenida De Los Arboles and turn right. Drive further than you remember having to drive to this trailhead (10 or 15 minutes). DESCRIPTION:Come join the 19th annual Backbone Trek\, hosted by the Santa Monica Mountains Trails Council! For a fee of $550 this guided event includes camping every night in a State Park campground\, transportation to and from the trailheads and all your meals. You will need to provide your own camping gear (tent\, sleeping bag\, etc) that will be trucked for you between campgrounds so you don’t need to carry it. \nYou can find all information about the event at https://www.smmtc.org/bbtrek/ including a complete multi-day itinerary and descriptions of each day’s hike. The trek is limited to the first 25 people who sign up. \nTo register for the event\, you will need to download the registration form from that web page listed above and mail it to the organizers. SUMMARY:Ride the Two Winds (Dos Vientos) - Gentler Friendly
DESCRIPTION:Let’s meet under the solar panels near the community center entrance. \nThis is a second\, easier hike for Tuesday\, and a little closer to home for some of us. \nThis hike will loop around the periphery of Dos Vientos Open Space\, passing Twin Ponds\, overlooking Potrero Road and the Oxnard Plain with the Channel Islands in the background. We will cross 3 streets along the way. \nThis hike is about 5.0 miles with 800 feet of elevation gain. \nPace: This is a gentler friendly hike. We will go at a slightly slower pace than the Intermediate Trailblazer Hikes\, and we will finish in about\n2-2 1/2 hours. Faster hikers are welcome to join us so long as they are willing to hike at the slower pace of the group or wait at the forks on the trail. There are many confusing side trails in Dos Vientos so I ask that everyone plan to stay in contact with the group. \nPlease note this trail is very exposed (no shade) and there is no water along the way. \nDIRECTIONS: From the 101 Freeway in Newbury Park\, exit at Borchard Road. Drive 3.4 miles and turn into the Dos Vientos Community Park on the right\, just after Via Ricardo (and before Via Las Brisas).
