SUMMARY:Ride the Two Winds (Dos Vientos) - Gentler Friendly Hike
DESCRIPTION:This is a second hike for Thursday\, in case Peter’s hike fills up. \nThis hike will loop around the periphery of Dos Vientos Open Space\, passing Twin Ponds\, overlooking Potrero Road and the Oxnard Plain with the Channel Islands in the background. We will cross 3 streets along the way. \nThis hike is about 5.0 miles with 800 feet of elevation gain. \nPace: This is a gentler friendly hike. We will go at a slightly slower pace than the Intermediate Trailblazer Hikes and we will finish in about 2-2 1/2 hours\, but this is not a beginner hike. Faster hikers are welcome to join us so long as they are willing to hike at the slower pace of the group or wait at the forks on the trail. There are many confusing side trails in Dos Vientos so I ask that everyone plan to stay in contact with the group\, not too fast and not too slow! \nPlease note this trail is very exposed (no shade) and there is no water along the way. \nDIRECTIONS: From the 101 Freeway in Newbury Park\, exit at Borchard Road. Drive 3.4 miles and turn into the Dos Vientos Community Park on the right\, just after Via Ricardo (and before Via Las Brisas). Meet near the tennis courts to the left. \nIf you are coming from the NW\, exit Wendy and turn left on Wendy and then a right on Borchard to Dos Vientos Community Park. \nDISCLAIMER / RELEASE OF LIABILITY\nIMPORTANT\, PLEASE READ BELOW IN ITS ENTIRETY:\nRestrictions apply for your safety and ours:\nDon’t show up unless you’re on the “Attending” list\nUnregistered or waitlisted will be turned away\nNo “Plus Ones” on this hike\nPlan on completing the entire hike or please find an alternative hike that better suits your hiking level.\nNo dogs\nAll participants must be 18 or older\, or accompanied by a parent or legal guardian.\nThe hike host is a volunteer and not responsible for the group. Safety should be a priority for everyone in the group. Please treat this meet-up as hiking with a group of friends. If you become fatigued and unable to continue the hike\, it is expected you will advise the hike host of this and return to our starting point on your own. If you are able to proceed\, it is expected that you will maintain line of sight with other members of the group at all times and help to promote the group’s safety and fitness goals.\nOutdoor sports and other events we plan can be inherently dangerous and accidents may happen. By participating in any posted event\, you are taking responsibility for your own safety and well-being. The Weekday Trailblazers Meetup Group and its organizers are not trained leaders and we do not confirm the qualifications of any of its members to lead or participate in trips. All participants take full responsibility for their own actions.\nIf you choose to sign up for this or any Weekday Trailblazers Meetup event\, you are releasing the Weekday Trailblazers Meetup Group\, its organizers\, and sponsors from all liability in case of possible injuries. Your personal safety depends on your own judgment and experience. You agree that you can navigate back to your transportation by yourself\, and agree to do so if you fall behind and lose track of the main body of hikers.\nThere are no “Plus One’s” on this hike. If you want to bring someone along\, have them sign up\, and make sure they’re aware of\, and agree to\, this disclaimer.

SUMMARY:Palo Comado to the Edge of China Flat - Gentler Friendly but not Beginner

Except for one turn near the trailhead\, this gentle 900′ climb\, punctuated by a 100′ climb and descent just at the start\, is uninterrupted until we get up to the top\, where we’ll rest at the bench\, turn around\, and head back. \nThis is about 6 mile hike with about 1\,000′ of elevation gain. \nUPDATE: Please review the guidelines to participate in our morning hikes. Here are some highlights and a link to the guidelines:\nhttps://www.meetup.com/The-Weekday-Trailblazers/about/\nRestrictions apply for your safety and ours:\nDon’t show up unless you’re on the “Attending” list\nNo “Plus Ones” on this hike\nPlan on completing the entire hike at a moderate pace or please find an alternative hike that better suits your hiking level.\nNo dogs allowed. \nDISCLAIMER / RELEASE OF LIABILITY \nThe hike host is a volunteer and not responsible for the group. DESCRIPTION:Conejo Open Space Foundation presents the live online presentation of “Oaks in Peril” with Kim Corella\, forest pathologist with CAL FIRE.\nCorella will explain the critical role oaks play as a keystone species and what the arrival of a new invasive beetle\, the gold spotted oak borer\, could mean for our community. She will teach you symptoms to look for and what you can do to fight this existential threat to our all-important oaks. \nThis is your chance to learn how to stop this potentially deadly invasive beetle from spreading further into our county. \nKim Corella holds a Masters of Science degree from Texas A&M University in plant pathology. She has served with CAL FIRE for 17 years and is currently with the Forest Entomology and Pathology Program for Southern California. She responds to and manages insects and disease matters on state and private lands in Southern California from Monterey County to San Diego. \nThe presentation will be Wednesday\, April 16\, at 7:00 pm\, via Zoom. After the presentation\, there will be a moderated Q & A session for attendees.\n\nOak trees support and nurture an astonishing 2\,300 species of birds\, mammals and insects\, both directly as a food and pollination source and by providing shelter.\n\nRegister Now!\nHeld quarterly since 2019\, the COSF virtual Speaker Series has included wildlife experts Dana Stangel\, Dr. Dan Cooper\, Dr. Seth Riley\, Dr. Jessica Sanchez\, Dr. Julie Morley and the National Wildlife Federation’s regional executive director Beth Pratt\, as well as climate authority Dr. Sean Anderson. \nTo sign up for this event\, go to the registration page on our COSF.ORG website. SUMMARY:Ray Miller Trail in La Jolla Canyon ~ Gentler Intermediate
DESCRIPTION:The trail is an awesome blend of ocean and mountain views in Malibu’s La Jolla Canyon. We will start from the trailhead which follows the canyon eastward\, away from the ocean. After another peak\, you’ll start a slight decline that brings you to the fire road where we will turn around. Along the way\, we’ll be treated to magnificent sweeping views of La Jolla and Big Sycamore Canyons\, and of course\, the largest ocean in the world. On a clear day\, the Channel Islands are easily within sight\, although the marine layer has been pretty prominent this summer.\nThis is a 5-6 mile out and back hike with an elevation gain/loss of about 1000’. \nDirections: \nFrom Los Angeles\, take the Pacific Coast Highway (PCH) north\, 22 miles from Malibu Canyon Rd. Across the street from Thornhill Broome Beach is the entrance to La Jolla Canyon. It is very clearly marked. Turn right. \nFrom Ventura\, take PCH eastward\, and turn left 4 miles after Las Posas Road into La Jolla Canyon. \nHeads up: There is a parking fee in the lot (or free with state parking pass). There is free parking on PCH just a short walk to the trailhead. \nPlease review the guidelines (guidelines) to join our hikes.\nRestrictions apply for your safety and ours: \n\nDon’t show up unless you’re shown on the “Attending” list.\nPlan on KEEPING UP with the group and completing the entire hike at a moderate pace\, or please find an alternative hike that better suits your hiking level.\nNo “Plus Ones” or dogs on Weekday Trailblazer hikes.\n\nDISCLAIMER/RELEASE OF LIABILITY – PLEASE READ IN ITS ENTIRETY \nThe hike host is a volunteer and not responsible for the group. SUMMARY:Encinal Canyon to Top of the World ~ Intermediate Hike

Holm oaks are one of the main trees used to establish truffle orchards\, but we’ll be nosing around the canyon strictly for its beauty. \nThe trail from Encinal is a smooth\, firm\, and well-traveled single track\, swooping and winding with a constant\, gentle slope. We’ll have fabulous views of the coast for much of the way. Close to the top\, we’ll take on the slightly steeper Etz Meloy Motorway\, then the last tenth of a mile is up a seldom-used trail to the isolated peak\, where we’ll both lose and catch our breath with a 360-degree view. \nFrom our perch above it all we’ll see Sandstone Peak to the west\, Simi Valley to the north\, Ladyface and Mt Baldy to the east and the Channel Islands to the south and west. \nThis is a 8 mile out and back hike\, with about 1200′ of elevation gain. \nNOTE: Please review the guidelines to participate in our hikes. SUMMARY:Wildwood Central Park ~ Gentler Friendly
DESCRIPTION:Wildwood Park in Thousand Oaks is one of the most versatile local parks there is\, with 27 miles of trails skittering through rocky cliffs\, cacti-filled desert environs\, volcanic rock\, riparian forest\, and a cool\, watery canyon. \nWe will meet at the main parking lot and hike on the opposite side of Wildwood from where Laurie’s hike is going. We will probably also be a little slower. Of course faster people can join\, just wait for us at the forks. \nHighlights of the hike include waterfalls incorporating 40’ Paradise waterfalls along with a long creek\, Indian caves\, volcanic rock cliffs\, and wildflowers throughout. Wildwood’s archetypal western look served as the set for The Rifleman\, Gunsmoke\, and Wagon Train back in the day\, as well as the movie Spartacus. I doubt there will be any wildflowers this early\, but you never know. \nThe hike will start at Moonridge Trail and cross onto the stagecoach trail towards lizard rock\, then down towards the water treatment plant\, crossing streams and tree canopies over approximately 5 miles with about a 800’ elevation gain/loss. \nDirections:\nFrom the 101 in Thousand Oaks\, turn north on Lynn Road and continue 2.6 miles to Avenida De Los Arboles\, then turn left. Continue for about a mile to the end and turn into the Wildwood parking lot on the left. \nFrom the 118\, travel west to the 23\, exit at Avenida De Los Arboles and turn right. Drive further than you remember having to drive to this trailhead (10 or 15 minutes). Turn left into the parking lot when the road ends. \nPlease review the guidelines (link to the guidelines) to join our hikes.\nRestrictions apply for your safety and ours: \n\nDon’t show up unless you’re shown on the “Attending” list.\nPlan on KEEPING UP with the group and completing the entire hike at a moderate pace**\,** or please find an alternative hike that better suits your hiking level.\nNo “Plus Ones” or dogs on Weekday Trailblazer hikes.\n\nDISCLAIMER/RELEASE OF LIABILITY – PLEASE READ IN ITS ENTIRETY\nThe hike host is a volunteer and not responsible for the group. Safety should be a priority for everyone in the group. Please treat this meet-up as hiking with a group of friends. If you become fatigued and unable to continue the hike\, it is expected you will advise the hike host of this and return to our starting point on your own. If you are able to proceed\, it is expected that you will maintain line of sight with other members of the group at all times and help to promote the group’s safety and fitness goals. \nOutdoor sports and other events we plan can be inherently dangerous and accidents may happen. By participating in any posted event\, you are taking responsibility for your own safety and well-being. SUMMARY:Liberty Canyon Preserve - Phantom/Grasslands Trail Loop - 6.5 mi.\, 1100'
DESCRIPTION:Due to anticipated warm (hot?) weather I will lead us in the opposite direction from the original post. This will allow us to do most of the elevation gain at the beginning while it is cooler. \nOriginal description (read backwards for correct hiking sequence….or just trust me). On this hike we will explore the Liberty Canyon Natural Preserve which makes up the northern quadrant of Malibu Creek State Park (MCSP). We will begin our adventure on the Liberty Canyon Fire Road (aka Las Virgenes trail)\, heading south along the eastern edge of the preserve to the junction of MCSP’s North Grasslands Trail. The Grasslands Trail crosses Mulholland Hwy into the center of the park where we will follow the High Road/Crags Road along picturesque Malibu Creek. Leaving stream level we will climb the ridge above Century Lake and turn off on the always scenic Lookout Trail on our way to the Cistern Trail. The Cistern Trail takes us to our second Mulholland Hwy crossing and the Phantom Trailhead. The Phantom Trail climbs up and over the western edge of Liberty Canyon Natural Preserve and back to our starting point. \nThis grand tour of the Liberty Canyon Natural Preserve and MCSP’s central/northern trail system will clock in at about 6.5 miles and 1100′ elevation gain. \nKathy and I scouted this hike several weeks ago. All of the trails are reasonably clear but the Phantom Trail has a few overgrown areas (long pants recommended) and the poison oak is in full leaf. \nPlease review the guidelines (link to the guidelines) to join our hikes.\nRestrictions apply for your safety and ours: \n\nDon’t show up unless you’re shown on the “Attending” list.\nPLEASE bring plenty of water.\nYour safety is your own personal responsibility\, but the hike leader reserves the right to ask you to leave if you come unprepared.\nNo “Plus Ones” or dogs on Weekday Trailblazer hikes.\n\nDISCLAIMER/RELEASE OF LIABILITY – PLEASE READ IN ITS ENTIRETY\nThe hike host is a volunteer and not responsible for the group. SUMMARY:Saddle Peak/Topanga Lookout Trails ~ Fun Gentler Intermediate
DESCRIPTION:This hike begins at Saddle Peak Trailhead\, a couple hundred feet to the right on the other side of the street from the parking lot. The trail winds upward gradually over switchbacks\, giving way as the trail heads up to a dramatic rocky overlook with striking views of the Pacific\, Stunt Ranch State Park\, Calabasas Peak\, and Old Topanga Canyon. There are also longer vistas northwest into Ventura County and east to the San Fernando Valley. We will see beautiful wooded areas and increasing views of the Santa Monica Mountains and Stunt Ranch State Park as we ascend. We eventually reach the Saddle Peak Trail via Backbone Trail and soon begin an easterly ridgeline walk high above the Pacific. This route will take us along and above spectacular tilted and pocketed sandstone formations\, with dramatic views of the mountains and ocean as we proceed. Then\, we will proceed to Topanga Lookout hike. \nWe will head up the Topanga Tower Motorway which crosses a junction\, (Fossil Ridge Trail/Backbone Trail)\, and continue up the paved road toward the radio towers atop the summit. When a wide dirt trail veers off to the left\, follow this track along the ridge uphill and down to the lookout. The large\, graffiti-covered concrete foundation at the site of the old fire tower offers amazing views of the surrounding mountains and landscape\, wide and far. There will be a little rock-scambling close to the top. We will take a short break at Saddle Peak and return back the same way. \nIt is about a 5 mile out and back trip with +/- 1000 feet of elevation gain. \nDirections: \nFrom the 101 – exit at the Las Virgenes Road exit and go south (toward the ocean). Drive 3 miles to Mulholland Highway and make a left turn. Continue miles to Stunt Road and turn right. Go just about 3 miles and park on the roadside dirt parking on the right. \nPlease review the guidelines (https://www.meetup.com/The-Weekday-Trailblazers/about/) to join our hikes.\nRestrictions apply for your safety and ours: \n\nDon’t show up unless you’re shown on the “Attending” list.\nPlan on KEEPING UP with the group and completing the entire hike at a moderate pace\, or please find an alternative hike that better suits your hiking level.\nNo “Plus Ones” or dogs on Weekday Trailblazer hikes.\n\nDISCLAIMER/RELEASE OF LIABILITY – PLEASE READ IN ITS ENTIRETY\nThe hike host is a volunteer and not responsible for the group. SUMMARY:Intro to Cheseboro Ridge Trail - Gentler 5 miles\, 800'
DESCRIPTION:The hills above Calabasas are lush and brilliant green\, benefitting from the recent rains. This out-and-back hike offers a little-used access route to Cheseboro Ridge\, which runs above our typical Sheep Corral hike. A combination of graded gravel and single-track trail ascends steadily to a high point with great visibility to Bell Canyon\, Hidden Hills\, Cheseboro Canyon\, and Mount Boney in the distance. While there are few wildflowers yet in bloom\, last year’s patches of calabash gourds are scattered across the hillsides. \nMy shoes got a little muddy on Sunday when I pre-hiked this\, but by Thursday\, the trail should be firm and dry. \nDIRECTIONS \nThe Morrison Ranch Road Trailhead is NOT at the north end of Las Virgenes\, but rather\, only 6/10 mile north of the 101 interchange\, a half-mile north of the fire station\, and at the northern end of a white fence. Set your GPS for 5526 Las Virgenes Road\, Calabasas. If you’ve got to Thousand Oaks Boulevard\, you’ve gone too far. Look for my Prius on the west side of the street. You may need to do a legal U-turn to park nearest the trailhead. \nDISCLAIMER / RELEASE OF LIABILITY\nIMPORTANT\, PLEASE READ BELOW IN ITS ENTIRETY \nThe hike hosts are volunteers and not responsible for the group. SUMMARY:Fall Into the Gap not the Water- Latigo toward Corral Canyon ~ Intermediate Hike
DESCRIPTION:Today we’ll hike the Backbone Trail dreaming of the impending wildflowers. We’ll begin at Latigo Canyon and walk on dirt and stuff and strive to reach the familiar sandstone structures of Mesa Peak Motorway. Along the way\, we’ll cross Castro Crest and descend into Upper Solstice Canyon before we climb toward Mesa Peak Motorway\, at the top of Corral Canyon. There are LOTS OF WATER CROSSINGS!! Bring poles and waterproof boots. \nWe’re starting high\, dipping down\, then rising again from Latigo to Castro Crest for broad views of mountains and canyons. The descent from Castro Crest is the standard chaparral-blanketed fare we’re accustomed to in this area\, and it happens to be BEAUTIFUL right now. Once on the floor of Upper Solstice\, we’ll “ford” seasonal streams and check for the charred remnants of the previous cover. The climb up to Castro Peak Motorway becomes increasingly rocky\, so poles may prove to be useful. \nWe will return the way we came. \nTotal total distance is 8.4 miles\, with 1650’ of elevation gain. \nPlease review the guidelines to participate in our hikes. Here are some highlights.\nRestrictions apply for your safety and ours:\nDon’t show up unless you’re on the “Attending” list.\nNo “Plus Ones” on this hike.\nPlan on sticking with the group\, and completing the entire hike at a reasonable pace and letting the hike leader know if you turn around early. She may also. Please find an alternative hike that better suits your hiking level if you have not hiked at this level before. \nNo dogs please.\nBring ample hydration. \nDirections: \nFrom the 101\, take Kanan Dune Road south for 6.8 miles. Turn left\, heading east on Latigo Canyon Road\, and drive three miles to the unmarked dirt lot on the left. Use your odometer to gauge the distance. \nFrom PCH\, drive 7.3 miles inland on Latigo Canyon Road. After passing Upper Ramirez Motorway\, turn right into the dirt pullout at the trailhead. The parking area is unmarked\, so watch your odometer. \nDISCLAIMER / RELEASE OF LIABILITY \nIMPORTANT\, PLEASE READ BELOW IN ITS ENTIRETY: \nThe hike hosts are volunteers and not responsible for the group. SUMMARY:Ride the Two Winds (Dos Vientos) - Gentler Friendly Hike
DESCRIPTION:This is for the slower hikers on Tuesday. Of course anyone can join\, just wait for us at the forks. SUMMARY:Liberty Canyon Nature Preserve - Phantom/Grasslands Trail Loop - 6.5 mi.\, 1100'
DESCRIPTION:On this hike we will explore the Liberty Canyon Nature Preserve which makes up the northern quadrant of Malibu Creek State Park (MCSP). We will begin our adventure on the Liberty Canyon Fire Road\, heading south along the eastern edge of the preserve to the junction of MCSP’s North Grasslands Trail. The Phantom Trail climbs up and over the western edge of Liberty Canyon Nature Preserve and back to our starting point. \nThis grand tour of the Liberty Canyon Nature Preserve and MCSP’s central/northern trail system will clock in at about 6.5 miles and 1100′ elevation gain. \nKathy and I scouted this hike several weeks ago. All of the trails are reasonably clear but the Phantom Trail has a few overgrown areas (long pants recommended) and there are some rocky spots where trekking poles might be helpful (if you normally use them).
